Abstract:Marine debris is often detected everywhere in the oceans after it enters the marine ecosystems from various sources. Marine litter pollution is a major threat to the marine ecosystem in Bangladesh. A preliminary study was conducted to identify the sources of marine litter (plastics, foamed plastic, clothes, glass, ceramic, metals, paper, and cardboard) along the Bay of Bengal coast. From the observations, the range of abundance of the collected marine litter was 0.14-0.58 items/m2. From the ten sampling sites, the highest amount of marine litter was observed for aluminium cans (3500), followed by plastic bottles (3200). The spatial distribution pattern indicated that all the study areas had beach litter of all types of materials. The present investigation showed that plastics were the dominating pollutants in the marine ecosystem in Bangladesh. The clean-coast index (CCI) value indicated that the Cox's Bazar coast was clean to dirty class. The abundance, distribution, and pollution of marine litter along the coastal belts pose a potential threat to the entire ecosystem. This study will help come up with ways to manage and get rid of marine litter along the coast in an effective way.

Abstract:Microplastics are omnipresent in the terrestrial and aquatic environment, and are considered as a potentially serious threat to the biodiversity and ecosystem. Pollution of plastic debris and microplastics in the inland and marine environment has raised concerns in Bangladesh, which is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. This review summarizes the research progress on separation and characterization of microplastics, as well as their occurrence and sources in Bangladesh. Despite of the first total ban on plastic bags in the world introduced back in 2002, microplastics have been ubiquitously detected in the country's inland and marine environment, with the majority of them coming from secondary sources. The microplastics observed in Bangladesh were dominated by fibers, which were derived mainly from textile sources. Polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinylchloride (PVC) were the most abundant polymers found for microplastics in the marine and freshwater environment of Bangladesh. Along with the identified research priorities to improve the understanding on the ecotoxicological effect and fate of microplastics, extensive and in-depth studies are required to bridge the knowledge gaps to enable comprehensive risk assessment of microplastic pollution on local ecosystems and human health, while effective management of plastic wastes and their recycling are necessary to alleviate this problem in the country.
A critical review of the emerging research on the detection and assessment of microplastics pollution in the coastal, marine, and urban Bangladesh

Abstract:The research on the extent and effects of microplastics pollution in the Global South is only getting started. Bangladesh is a South Asian country with one of the fastest growing economies in the world, however, such exponential economic growth has also increased the pollution threats to its natural and urban environment. In this paper, we reviewed the recent primary research on the assessment of the extent of microplastics pollution in Bangladesh. From the online databases, we developed a compilation of emerging research articles that detected and quantified microplastics in different coastal, marine, and urban environments in Bangladesh. Most of the studies focused on the coastal environment (e.g., beach sediment) and marine fish, while limited data were available for the urban environment. We also discussed the relationship of the type of anthropogenic activities with the observed microplastic pollution. The Cox's Bazar sea beach in south-east Bangladesh experienced microplastics pollution due to tourism activities, while fishing and other anthropogenic activities led to microplastics pollution in the Bay of Bengal. While microplastics larger than 1 mm were prevalent in the beach sediments, smaller microplastics with size below 0.5 mm were prevalent in marine fish samples. Moreover, the differences in microplastic abundance, size, shape, color, and polymer type found were depended on the sampling sites and relevant anthropogenic activities. It is imperative to identify major sources of microplastics pollution in both natural and urban environment, determine potential environmental and human health effects, and develop mitigating and prevention strategies for reducing microplastics pollution.

Spatiotemporal distribution of microplastic debris in the surface beach sediment of the southeastern coast of Bangladesh

Abstract:This study undertakes a spatiotemporal analysis of microplastic pollution in surface beach sediments, covering 7 coastal beaches in Bangladesh and two seasons-monsoon and winter. The concentration of microplastics extracted from the surface beach sediment is 242.86 particles/kg dw. The results showed both significant seasonal (p value = 0.001) and spatial (p value = 0.004) variation. The abundance and polymer types were significantly higher (57 %) in winter than in the monsoon season (43 %). Touristic and commercial beaches showed higher levels of microplastic pollution than the non-touristic beaches. Polyethylene (28.8 %) and Polypropylene (27.6 %) were the most abundant polymer. The most dominant coloration of microplastics was white (42.6 %). The majority of the microplastics were fibers (33.5 %). Smallest particles measuring <1 mm constituted nearly half of the total microplastics load (48.5 %). This baseline data can be useful in terms of coastal zone management for the southeastern coastal beaches of Bangladesh.

Abstract:In today's world, microplastic contamination of aquatic systems is a subject of major concern. In this study, the incidence of microplastics in freshwater fish from both farmed and wild sources was evaluated. Wild catla ( Gibelion catla ), stinging catfish ( Heteropneustes fossilis ), rui ( Labeo rohita ), tengara catfish ( Mystus tengara ), and pabdah catfish ( Ompok pabda ) were collected from Padma River, Turag River, and Bhairab River. Farmed fishes of same species were collected from Mymensingh and Chandpur fish markets. A total of 68 (43.6%) microparticles out of 156 were identified as microplastics using ATR-FTIR. About 66.67% (20 out of 30) of farmed fish samples had microplastics in their digestive system, while 88.4% (23 of 26) of wild fish samples presented microplastics. There was a significant difference ( p < 0.05) in average microplastic count between wild and farmed fish. Average microplastic count also showed a significant difference among five fish species ( p < 0.01). A variety of polymers were observed, with polyethylene being the most abundant, followed by polyester, polypropylene, polyamide-6, and polyurethane. This study suggests that microplastic contamination is ubiquitous and contamination is common in all of the fish species investigated, independent of their origin (wild or farmed). However, wild fish population is at a greater risk of ingesting microplastics. This study, for the first time ever, reports plastic pollution in freshwater fishes of Bangladesh from wild and farmed sources.

Abstract:Plastic is considered one of the most indispensable commodities in our daily life. At the end of life, the huge ever-growing pile of plastic waste (PW) causes serious concerns for our environment, including agricultural farmlands, groundwater quality, marine and land ecosystems, food toxicity and human health hazards. Lack of proper infrastructure, financial backup, and technological advancement turn this hazardous waste plastic management into a serious threat to developing countries, especially for Bangladesh. A comprehensive review of PW generation and its consequences on environment in both global and Bangladesh contexts is presented. The dispersion routes of PW from different sources in different forms (microplastic, macroplastic, nanoplastic) and its adverse effect on agriculture, marine life and terrestrial ecosystems are illustrated in this work. The key challenges to mitigate PW pollution and tackle down the climate change issue is discussed in this work. Moreover, way forward toward the design and implementation of proper PW management strategies are highlighted in this study.

Abstract:The Bay of Bengal (BoB) is home to a range of commercially important species with different food habits and feeding features. Microplastic (MP) contamination in the fish of BoB, like in many other marine environments, is a significant environmental concern. The study aimed to investigate the presence of microplastics (MPs) in the gastrointestinal tracts (GITs) of selected commercial marine fishes from the Bangladesh coast of the BoB. Six fish species ( Escualosa thoracata , Tenualosa ilisha , Johnius belangerii , Trichiurus lepturus , Planiliza parsia , and Mystus gulio ) were investigated ( n = 120) following hydrogen peroxide digestion, and floatation (saline solution) protocols. After analyses, a total number of 696 MPs (dimension 0.3 to 5 mm) were identified. Moreover, the highest occurrence of MPs in fish GITs was found in planktivorous fish (average of 7.7 items/individual), followed by omnivorous (average of 5.2 items/individual), and carnivorous fish (average of 4.6 items/individual) ( p < 0.001). However, planktivorous E. thoracata showed the highest number of MPs per g of GIT (average of 30.99 items/g GIT), whereas T. ilisha showed the lowest count (average of 0.77 items/g GIT). Different types of MPs (fibers (19 to 76%), fragments (6 to 61%), films (8 to 35%), microbeads (0 to 5%), and foams (0 to 2%)) were also observed. In terms of the color of MPs, the transparent, black, green, and blue types were the most common. Polymers were found as polyethylene (35 to 43%), polyethylene terephthalate (28 to 35%), polyamide (20 to 31%), and polystyrene (0 to 7%). The study provides a significant incidence of MPs in fish from the Bangladesh part of the BoB, which is very concerning. Therefore, long-term research is indispensable to ascertain the variables affecting the presence of MPs in fish, their origins, and their potential effects on the BoB fisheries. Stringent policies on plastic use and disposal should be strongly urged in this coastal region.

Analysis of Feasible Pathway of Marinefishing Net Recycling of China-Case Study of Sanya City,Hainan Province

Abstract:As single-use plastics, abandoned fishing nets cause pollution and damage to the ocean and biodiversity. This is a hot topic in international environmental and plastic governance. Fishing net materials are mainly composed of thermoplastics, including polyamide (nylon, PA) , polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP) . The real solution to pollution is to bring back waste fishing nets for recycling and use them in high-value recycled products. The research team conducted on-site research in Sanya City in April 2023. The survey found that the main fishing gear used by fishermen in Sanya is gillnets. Due to reasons such as low recycling value and high salvage costs, the local area has not yet formed a closed-loop industrial chain for waste net high-value recycling. The survey also found that Sanya fishermen have a positive attitude towards increasing fishing net recycling, but their actual actions are also restricted by factors such as the price of fishing net recycling and the convenience of recycling. Based on the survey results of this fishing net recycling, the research team provides four feasible suggestions for high-value utilization of fishing net recycling and regeneration. The first is to introduce upstream and downstream enterprises and terminal brand enterprises to regenerate fishing nets to produce high-value recycled products, thereby increasing the initial recycling price of fishing nets. The second is to establish a “centralized recycling demonstration site” to improve the efficiency of fishing net recycling through differential price subsidy recycling models. The third is to establish the traceability of fishing net recycling and the quantitative evaluation system of recycled carbon emission reduction to give full play to the commercial value and carbon market value of recycled fishing nets. The fourth is to strengthen the publicity of the environmental benefits of fishing net recycling and promote community environmental sustainability through capacity building and training. Continuous development.
Microplastic contamination in commercial fish feeds: A major concern for sustainable aquaculture from a developing country

Abstract:Plastic pollution has become a global issue nowadays. Due to the increased population in developing countries, we largely depend on fish from our aquaculture industry to meet the required protein demand. Though several studies documented plastic ingestion in freshwater and marine organisms, very limited studies have been conducted to elucidate microplastic (MP) contamination in commercial fish feed. Therefore, this study was designed to identify, quantify, and characterize microplastics (MPs) in commercial fish feeds in Bangladesh and assess possible health risks in fish consuming different commercial fish feeds. All fish feed samples were 100 % contaminated with MPs, where the mean abundance of MPs ranged between 500 and 2200 MPs/kg. No significant differences among different types of feeds (e.g., starter, grower, and finisher) were observed in terms of MPs abundance (F = 0.999, p = 0.385). This study revealed that fiber was the most dominant shape of MPs (90 %), while the most dominant color of MPs was red (34 %), followed by black (31 %) and blue (19 %). The 100-1500 µm size class covers 88 % of the total MPs in the collected fish feed samples. Identified polymers in the samples were polyethylene (PE, 37.71 %), polyvinyl chloride (PVC, 27.14 %), polypropylene (PP, 22.08 %), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET, 13.07 %), respectively, where PE and PVC fall under the risk category IV to V. The Pollution load index (PLI) values of all fish feed samples were <10, indicating the risk category of I (low risk). Therefore, this study highly recommended avoiding plastic materials in the packaging and storing purposes of feed ingredients in the feed mills to ensure contamination-free fish feed for sustainable aquaculture.

Abstract:Bangladesh is a deltaic country in Asia, and its riverine systems ultimately drain into the Bay of Bengal. Plastic is a severe environmental issue for coastal-marine ecosystems due to the indiscriminate usage and discarding of plastic items in the upstream river that eventually find their route into the Bay of Bengal. Microplastics (MPs) are widespread pollutants in almost all environmental compartments, including aquatic environments. This study aimed to quantify and understand the distribution of microplastics in surface water and sediments of the river Karnaphuli, a tidal confluence river adjacent to the Chattogram seaport city of Bangladesh, a highly inhabited and industrial area on the southeast coast of the Bay of Bengal. A manta trawl net (300-μm mesh size) was used to collect surface water samples, while an Ekman dredge was used to collect sediment samples. The concentrations of microplastics in the surface water of the river Karnaphuli during late monsoon, winter, and early summer were recorded to be 120,111.11, 152,222.22, and 164,444.44 items/km 2 , respectively, while in sediments, those were recorded to be 103.83, 137.50, and 103.67 items/kg, respectively. A higher abundance of microplastics was observed in downstream surface water (228,888.88 items/km 2 ) and sediments (164.17 items/kg). Smaller sizes (0.3 to 0.5 mm) of microplastics were predominant, fibers or threads were the frequent types, and black was the most common color in the river Karnaphuli. The Fourier transform infrared analysis revealed that polyethylene terephthalate (surface water: 22%, sediments: 19%), polyamide (surface water: 15%, sediments: 13%), polyethylene (surface water: 12%, sediments: 18%), polystyrene (surface water: 13%, sediments: 11%), and alkyd resin (surface water: 13%, sediments: 10%) were the most prevalent polymers in the river Karnaphuli. Moreover, there was a moderate positive correlation between MPs abundance in surface water and sediments. Therefore, improved long-term research (in different seasons with horizontal and vertical monitoring) is necessary in order to accurately determine the flux of microplastics from the river Karnaphuli to the Bay of Bengal.

Abstract:Solid waste mismanagement induces the release of a significant amount of plastic waste into the ocean, particularly in countries with poor solid waste management systems, such as Bangladesh. Nevertheless, the total plastic input of Bangladesh by multiple sources is still unknown. Waste input from land-based sources within 50 km coastline of this country is documented. However, the quantity of plastic entering the oceans from multiple sources, such as marine vessels, is still unknown and not documented. Passengers and goods are transported via marine vessels operating in Bangladesh's Inland Water Transport sector, which has the potential to generate a substantial quantity of plastic debris that remains unaccounted for. This study represented the initial attempt to quantify the amount of debris produced by passenger-carrying marine vessels in riverine systems. The estimated total amount of plastic waste generated per day per route from marine vessels stands at 76.6 kg. The total weight of plastic waste from all pathways was 436.3 kg, resulting in an estimated annual plastic waste generation of 157,068 kg. This yearly input is 0.6 % of Bangladesh's total mismanaged waste input into the Bay of Bengal, which is 0.79 million metric tonnes. The lack of implementation of regulatory measures and ineffective waste management systems can be pointed out as the main reason behind these plastic inputs. This paper identifies the current gaps in waste management practices for riverine plastic waste and is a forerunner to creating a baseline for unified policy formulation for the government.

Abstract:Plastics in marine environments undergo molecular degradation via biocatalytic and photocatalytic mechanisms. Abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) damages marine and coastal environments as well as plant and animal species. This article reviews ghost fishing, ecological damage from marine plastics, recommended recycling practices and alternative usages of derelict fishing gear. Material mixing techniques are proposed to counteract the effect of biocatalytic and photocatalytic biodegradation within the context of plastic fish net recycling. There is a need for a new and rapid "multidimensional molecular characterization" technology to quantify, at a batch level, the extent of photocatalytic or biocatalytic degradation experienced on each recovered fishing net, comprising molecular weight alteration, chemical functional group polydispersity and contaminant presence. Rapid multidimensional molecular characterization enables optimized conventional material mixing of recovered fishing nets. In this way, economically attractive social return schemes can be introduced for used fishing nets, providing an economic incentive for fishers to return conventional fishing nets for recycling.

Abstract:Microplastic (MP) pollution is an emerging environmental problem, due to its universal dispersion. In the present study, we determined the MP pollution in water, sediment, and fish samples of three different urban lakes of Bangladesh to assess the bioaccumulation of MPs from the lake environment to fish's edible (flesh) and inedible tissue (gut), ecological risk and consequent human exposure to MPs by fish consumption. A total of forty-three fishes were collected from Jahangirnagar Co-Operative Housing Society (JCHS), Dhanmondi Lake (DL), and Saturia Thana Lake (MST). The average MP concentration in sediment and water of the lakes is 7588 ± 4353 MPs/kg dry weights; 142 ± 22 MPs/L, respectively. MPs were identified in the edible (2.8–20.2 MPs/g) and inedible (2.27–20.93 MPs/g) tissue of all fish species. The highest number of MPs was observed in the flesh of Labeo bata of the JCHS Lake and in the gut of Catla catla of DL. The most dominant shape of MPs was fiber and fragment, 0.1–0.4 mm was the dominant size range, and blue, purple, and transparent were the dominant colors. The presence of six polymer types was revealed by FT-IR analysis, which were polystyrene, polypropylene, nitrile, ethylene vinyl acetate, high-density polyethylene, and nylon. The concentration of MPs in fish is found to increase with the increment in body weight. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) analysis reveals that among all the fish species, Labeo bata and Oreochromis mossambicus accumulate the highest number of MPs from the lake environment. The pollution load index of MPs indicates that the sampling sites were within hazard levels III–IV. Estimated annual intake reveals that humans will be exposed to the highest number of MPs if they consume the flesh of Labeo bata of DL and JCHS Lake.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), recently identified as emerging contaminants in environmental and biological systems, currently lack a comprehensive ecological risk assessment in waste disposal environments. This study investigates the presence, abundance, and distribution patterns of MPs in agricultural soils and surface water near the largest waste disposal area in Dhaka, Bangladesh, mainly focusing on assessing ecological risks and identifying potential hazards. MPs were characterized using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, stereomicroscopy, and SEM–EDX analysis. The agricultural soils were categorized into 5–2 mm, 2–1 mm, and 1–0.5 mm size fractions, concentrating on MPs less than 5 mm in surface waters. The mean abundance of MPs in surface soils was 2800 ± 696.42, 2320 ± 622.09, and 2040 ± 313.05 particles/kg, while in subsurface soil they were 2680 ± 576.19, 2200 ± 570.09, and 1760 ± 443.72 particles/kg for respective size fractions, and 376 ± 57.29 particles/liter in surface water. MPs were significantly correlated with soil moisture, pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus. The predominant polymers were polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene, mainly in fiber and film forms. The ecological risk evaluation indicated a high risk for surface soil and a medium-to-high risk for subsurface soil of agricultural land and surface water. Plastic mulch, solid waste, surface water irrigation, and organic compost were probably the potential sources of MPs, and their entrance into farmland and adjacent environments should be strictly limited. This study would provide the baseline reference for the current situation on agricultural fields and surface water near waste dumping sites, as well as emphasize the need for strong environmental regulations and effective mitigation techniques to address microplastic pollution.

Abstract:The toxic impact of microplastics (MPs) in the terrestrial and aquatic environment has recently become a global problem. The Bay of Bengal coasts is an important bio-diverse ecosystem, which help the people for their sound living and gather natural resources. However, the distribution, impact, source and transport mechanism, and policy to take initiatives for MPs pollution control at the Bay of Bengal coasts' have received less attention. Therefore, this review summarizes MPs' distribution and their source in the Bay of Bengal coasts' ecosystems. Current knowledge extends the impacts of MP on this vital ecosystem, existing policy, and further recommendations to mitigate MPs contamination are critically assessed in this study. Furthermore, mechanisms of MP on human health are also highlighted with the identification of current research gaps and future study suggestions. Given the escalating plastic usage and the prevalence of important sea products globally, there is a pressing need to prioritize research efforts on the impacts of MPs on the Bay of Bengal coasts from a long-term perspective. Knowledge obtained in this way would inform the scientists, stakeholders, and policy makers in such a way as to help them mitigate impacts of the micro- and nano-plastic legacy at this region.
