Abstract:The prevalence of microplastic contamination has become a major problem worldwide, with the potential to harm aquatic ecosystems and human well-being. This study investigated the occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in sediment samples obtained from Dal Lake, situated in the northwest Himalayas, India. Thirty-two sediment samples collected from different sites inside the lake were thoroughly analyzed using a stereomicroscope. The research showed that the average concentration of microplastics (MPs) in the sediment was 416 ± 38 MP/kg (mean ± standard error, n = 32) based on the weight of the dry sediment. The most frequently seen colours of MPs were blue, white, black, red, and orange. The majority of the total consists of fiber-shaped particles, accounting for 86.5%, while fragments make up 11%, and films make up 2.5%. Raman spectroscopy revealed the high occurrence of Polyamides, namely Nylon, comprising 62.5% of the sample. Small amounts of Polyethylene, Polyvinylchloride, and Polypropylene were also detected. The findings of this research suggest that tourism, fishing activities, and untreated wastewater are major contributors to the presence of microplastics (MPs) in the lake. In addition, local community habits, such as the use of packaging materials, automobiles, and cosmetics, also contribute to microplastic pollution. Sediment quality was assessed using hazard indicators such as the Polymer Hazard Index (PHI), Pollution Load Index (PLI), and Potential Ecological Risk Index (PERI). The occurrence of high levels of PHI (> 1000) in some regions is attributed to the presence of high-risk polymers such as polyamide (PA) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The sediments were classified as medium-risk according to the PERI values, whereas the PLI values revealed a relatively low contamination level (< 10), falling into Hazard Category I. The results of this research provide a crucial understanding of the categories, dispersion, and sources of microplastics (MPs) in Dal Lake. This understanding serves as the basis for focused efforts to protect the lake's biological balance and ensure the well-being of humans, both now and in the future.

Abstract:The global concern over microplastic (MP) contamination in diverse ecosystems is well-established, yet Nijhum Dwip Island (NDI), known for its ecological diversity, has not undergone a comprehensive study addressing the extent of MP pollution. This research aims to evaluate the spatial distribution, influencing factors, and ecological risks of MPs in both sediment and surface water surrounding NDI, situated in the Northern Bay of Bengal. A meticulous collection of 40 sediment and 40 tidal water samples from various sites facilitated a detailed analysis. The mean abundance of MPs in sediment was 138.39 ± 34.15 pieces/kg, while in water, it was 72.83 ± 30.76 pieces/m3. Various shapes observed on NDI included films, fragments, fibers, and foams, with fragments dominating in sediment (64.05 %) and water (61.51 %). Analysis of FTIR spectra identified two primary polymer types, namely polyethylene (PE) at 57 % and polypropylene (PP) at 40 %. The results indicated elevated pollution levels on NDI, with sediment and water pollution load index measuring 1.32 and 2.01, respectively, signifying significant MP contamination in both compartments. Given the island's rare biodiversity, the vicinity of wastewater sewages, anthropogenic activities, and atmospheric deposition, could be behind MP contamination in water and sediments. No strong correlation between MP and physiochemical properties in water and PCA biplots showed their similar distribution, whereas MP abundances in sediment were significantly correlated with pH and organic matter (p<0.05), signifying a pivotal role in transporting MPs in the aquatic environment. Two canonical variables were identified as important by canonical correlation analysis, demonstrating the interdependence of MP contamination at the sample sites. This research contributes to better insights into the occurrence of MP in the rare islands, which are ecosystems that have been hardly examined for this type of pollution, and it can report sustainable interventions to lessen MP inputs to the Bay of Bengal.

Abstract:Microplastic (MP) pollution is a critical environmental challenge worldwide, however limited research is reported in remote lakes of Pakistan. This study assessed MPs (>5 mm) prevalence, distribution and risk perspective in water and sediment of eight remote and high-altitude lakes (>1500 m above sea level) of Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan. The lakes exhibited an average abundance of 152.6 ± 104.6 to 12.1 ± 7 MP/kg of dry sediments and 2 ± 0.9 to 17.1 ± 17.2 MP/L of surface water. MPs <200 μm dominated in both matrices. Surface water predominantly contained polyester and polypropylene, while polypropylene and polyethylene dominated in sediments. The gradient of elevation did not show any pronounced impact on the fiber loading or MP count in both matrices. Backward air mass trajectory revealed that air masses vastly travelled from western-Asia, Arabian sea and Bay of Bengal with an average transmission distance of 2500-3500 km (500 m a.s.l) that can be a potential deposition MP source in the area. Pollution Load Index of the lakes were >1 exhibiting pollution. All other lakes except Batura and Borith manifested a moderate hazard index. Naltar lake along with aforementioned two lakes also manifested high polymer toxicity. Further research should emphasize understanding the mechanisms and biotic interactions in high-mountain ecosystems.

Abstract:Occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in freshwater environments, particularly reservoir and lakes, is an emerging concern. There are limited studies in Pakistan on microplastic pollution in the lacustrine environments and those that exist do not provide sufficient information on the spatial distribution of MPs in offshore surface water. The aims of this study were to determine microplastic abundance in Rawal Lake, Pakistan and to ascertain if sampling methodology influences microplastic counts. Surface water samples were collected from 10 sites; 5 tributaries, 2 human settlement and 3 fishing and boating areas using two different sampling techniques: 100 μm mesh trawl and 20 L sample through a 45 μm mesh sieve. A significant difference was observed in the abundance of MPs across two methods with the sieve method yielding 2.8 ± 1.44 particles/L and trawl yielding 0.025 ± 0.024 particles/L. Tributaries and boating/fishing area had higher microplastic abundance than the residential area regardless of sampling method. Filaments were the dominant shape of MPs in both type of samples followed by fragments in trawl samples and films in sieved samples. Microbeads were only detected in trawl samples. MPs within size range 0.1-0.9 mm were mostly fragments (82%). MPs were diverse in colors with white/transparent and black MPs common. Polypropylene was the main type of microplastic in Rawal Lake (40-74%). Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) of MPs showed cracks, roughness and striations on the particles. Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) detected heavy metals (Fe, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Co and Cr) in MPs. Findings suggest that microplastic pollution in Rawal Lake may pose great risk to aquatic and human life through leaching of inherent/adsorbed heavy metals and therefore requires future investigation.

Abstract:Microplastic (MP) pollution is an emerging environmental problem, due to its universal dispersion. In the present study, we determined the MP pollution in water, sediment, and fish samples of three different urban lakes of Bangladesh to assess the bioaccumulation of MPs from the lake environment to fish's edible (flesh) and inedible tissue (gut), ecological risk and consequent human exposure to MPs by fish consumption. A total of forty-three fishes were collected from Jahangirnagar Co-Operative Housing Society (JCHS), Dhanmondi Lake (DL), and Saturia Thana Lake (MST). The average MP concentration in sediment and water of the lakes is 7588 ± 4353 MPs/kg dry weights; 142 ± 22 MPs/L, respectively. MPs were identified in the edible (2.8–20.2 MPs/g) and inedible (2.27–20.93 MPs/g) tissue of all fish species. The highest number of MPs was observed in the flesh of Labeo bata of the JCHS Lake and in the gut of Catla catla of DL. The most dominant shape of MPs was fiber and fragment, 0.1–0.4 mm was the dominant size range, and blue, purple, and transparent were the dominant colors. The presence of six polymer types was revealed by FT-IR analysis, which were polystyrene, polypropylene, nitrile, ethylene vinyl acetate, high-density polyethylene, and nylon. The concentration of MPs in fish is found to increase with the increment in body weight. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) analysis reveals that among all the fish species, Labeo bata and Oreochromis mossambicus accumulate the highest number of MPs from the lake environment. The pollution load index of MPs indicates that the sampling sites were within hazard levels III–IV. Estimated annual intake reveals that humans will be exposed to the highest number of MPs if they consume the flesh of Labeo bata of DL and JCHS Lake.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), recently identified as emerging contaminants in environmental and biological systems, currently lack a comprehensive ecological risk assessment in waste disposal environments. This study investigates the presence, abundance, and distribution patterns of MPs in agricultural soils and surface water near the largest waste disposal area in Dhaka, Bangladesh, mainly focusing on assessing ecological risks and identifying potential hazards. MPs were characterized using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, stereomicroscopy, and SEM–EDX analysis. The agricultural soils were categorized into 5–2 mm, 2–1 mm, and 1–0.5 mm size fractions, concentrating on MPs less than 5 mm in surface waters. The mean abundance of MPs in surface soils was 2800 ± 696.42, 2320 ± 622.09, and 2040 ± 313.05 particles/kg, while in subsurface soil they were 2680 ± 576.19, 2200 ± 570.09, and 1760 ± 443.72 particles/kg for respective size fractions, and 376 ± 57.29 particles/liter in surface water. MPs were significantly correlated with soil moisture, pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus. The predominant polymers were polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene, mainly in fiber and film forms. The ecological risk evaluation indicated a high risk for surface soil and a medium-to-high risk for subsurface soil of agricultural land and surface water. Plastic mulch, solid waste, surface water irrigation, and organic compost were probably the potential sources of MPs, and their entrance into farmland and adjacent environments should be strictly limited. This study would provide the baseline reference for the current situation on agricultural fields and surface water near waste dumping sites, as well as emphasize the need for strong environmental regulations and effective mitigation techniques to address microplastic pollution.

Abstract:The primary objective of this research was to assess microplastics (MPs) in the sediments of Chilika lake. MPs were extracted from 22 sediment samples using the density separation method combined with vacuum pump filtration. A stereo-zoom microscope and Raman spectroscopy were employed to identify the sediment-associated MPs. The total MPs collected from all 22 sites was 440 ± 3.53 particles kg −1 wet sediments, with sizes ranging between 50 and 500 μm. In terms of morphology, fibers and fragments emerged as the dominant MP types, with counts of 210 ± 1.66 and 175 ± 1.76 particles kg −1 wet sediments, respectively. Raman spectroscopy verified the presence of various MP polymers in the sediments, predominantly HDPE (37 %), followed by PS (20 %), PET (18 %), PA (11 %), PP (7 %), and PC (7 %). A notable color variation was observed in MPs; black being the most prevalent (38.8 %), succeeded by blue (19.5 %), green (11.8 %), white (11.5 %), red (10.6 %), and transparent (7.5 %). ANOVA results indicated significant ( p > 0.05) variations in MP abundance across the 22 sampling locations. However, principal component analysis (PCA) and multiple regression analysis indicated that water quality parameters did not significantly influence MP abundance, yet it was found that MP retention was higher in fine-grained sediments like clay and silt. The leading sources of MPs in Chilika lake were found to be aquafarming, trailed by river and sewage discharges, fishing activities, antifouling coatings and tourism. Additionally, the pollution load index (PLI) was employed to gauge the ecological risks, categorizing the lake under risk category 1, which implies a minimal level of MPs pollution. This research aims to serve as an early warning system for MPs pollution in productive brackish water habitats globally, including Chilika lake, guiding policymakers towards appropriate management strategies and preventive measures.

Abstract:While microplastics (MPs) are globally prevalent in marine environments, extending to the Arctic and sub-arctic regions, the extent and distribution of MPs in terrestrial waters, drinking water sources, and recreational water in these areas remain unknown. This field study establishes a baseline for MPs in surface water sources, including lakes, rivers, and creeks, as well as in snow across three geo-locations (i.e., Far North, Interior, and Southcentral) in Alaska. Results (mean ± SE) show that the highest MP counts exist in snow (681±44 L-1), followed by lakes (361±76 L-1), creeks (377±88 L-1), and rivers (352±98 L-1). The smallest MPs (i.e., 89.6±3 μm) also happened to have occurred in snow, followed by their larger sizes in lakes (153.4±13 μm), rivers (267.6±28 μm), and creeks (319.5±25 μm). The physical morphology of MPs varies widely. MP fragments are predominant (i.e., nearly 62-74%) in these sites, while MP fibers (nearly 13-21%), pellets (nearly 13-18%), and films (<6%) also exist in appreciable quantities. Geolocation-wise, the Far North, where MPs were collected from off-road locations, shows the highest MP counts (695±58 L-1), compared to Interior (473±64 L-1) and Southcentral (447±62 L-1) Alaska. Results also indicate that the occurrence of MPs in the source waters and snow decreases with increasing distance from the nearest coastlines and towns or communities. These baseline observations of MPs in terrestrial waters and precipitation across Alaska indicate MP pollution even in less-explored environments. This can be seen as a cause for concern with regard to MP exposure and risks in the region and beyond.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), discovered in oceans, lakes, and rivers, can infiltrate the food chain through ingestion by organisms, potentially posing health risks. Our research is the first to study the composition and distribution of MPs in Bosten Lake's sediment. In May, the average abundance of MPs was 0.95±0.72 particles per 10 gs, and in October, it was 0.90±0.61 particles per 10 gs. Bohu Town had the highest MP abundance, with 1.75±0.35 particles per 10 gs in spring and 2 ± 0 particles per 10 gs in autumn. In May, 53 % of the MPs were transparent, while in October, black MPs constituted 58 %. The predominant morphology was fibrous, accounting for 61 % of the total. MPs in the size range of 0.2-1 mm made up 91 % and 66 % of the total in May and October, respectively. The most common types of MPs in May were polyethylene terephthalate (PET) at 40 % and polyethylene (PE) at 26 %. In October, PET was the most prevalent at 71 %, followed by poly(ether-ether-ketone)(PEEK) at 11 %. Certain microbial taxa, such as Actinobacteriota, Pseudomonas, and Vicinamibacteraceae, associated with MP degradation or complex carbon chain breakdown, were notably enriched in sediment areas with high MP concentrations. A significant positive correlation was observed between the abundance of MPs in sediments and Actinobacteriota. Additionally, the abundance of Thiobacillus, Ca.competibacter, and other bacteria involved in soil element cycling showed a significant positive correlation with the organic matter content in the sediments. Anaerobic bacteria like Thermoanaerobacterium displayed a significant positive correlation with water depth. Our study reveals the presence, composition, and distribution of MPs in Bosten Lake's sediments, shedding light on their potential ecological impact.
Microplastics pollution in the Surma River, Bangladesh: A rising hazard to upstream water quality and aquatic life

Abstract:The ecological health of freshwater rivers is deteriorating globally due to careless human activities, for instance, the emission of plastic garbage into the river. The current research was the first assessment of microplastics (MPs) pollution in water, sediment, and representative organisms (fish, crustacean, and bivalve) from the Surma River. Water, sediment, and organisms were sampled from six river sites (Site 1: Charkhai; Site 2: Golapganj; Site 3: Alampur; Site 4: Kazir Bazar; Site 5: Kanishail and Site 6: Lamakazi), and major water quality parameters were recorded during sampling. Thereafter, MPs in water, sediment, and organism samples were extracted, and then microscopically examined to categorize selected MPs types. The abundance of MPs, as well as size, and color distribution, were estimated. Polymer types were analyzed by ATR-FTIR, the color loss of MPs was recorded, the Pollution Load Index ( PLI ) was calculated, and the relationship between MPs and water quality parameters was analyzed. Sites 4 and 5 had comparatively poorer water quality than other sites. Microplastic fibers, fragments, and microbeads were consistently observed in water, sediment, and organisms. A substantial range of MPs in water, sediment, and organisms (37.33–686.67 items/L, 0.89–15.12 items/g, and 0.66–48.93 items/g, respectively) was recorded. There was a diverse color range, and MPs of <200 μm were prevalent in sampling areas. Six polymer types were identified by ATR-FTIR, namely Polyethylene (PE), Polyamide (PA), Polypropylene (PP), Cellulose acetate (CA), Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and Polystyrene (PS), where PE (41%) was recognized as highly abundant. The highest PLI was documented in Site 4 followed by Site 5 both in water and sediment. Likewise, Sites 4 and 5 were substantially different from other study areas according to PCA. Overall, the pervasiveness of MPs was evident in the Surma River, which requires further attention and prompt actions.

Abstract:Microplastics are a global environmental concern, especially in freshwater ecosystems. Despite the studies in specific regions of Tai lake, a gap persists in understanding the comprehensive risk of MPs across the entire watershed. Therefore, this study offers an overview of MPs abundance and assesses ecotoxicological risk by employing acute and chronic species sensitivity distributions, which consider the effects triggered by MPs. The concentrations of MPs ranged from 0 to 18.6 particles/L within the lake, 1.56 to 1.42 × 10 2 particles/L in the rivers, and 0.16 to 0.7 particles/L in the estuaries. Certain areas, particularly the northwest and southeast regions, exhibit higher concentrations. Using existing toxicity data, this study calculated predicted no effect concentrations for acute and chronic exposure of MPs to freshwater species, resulting in values of 11.5 and 31.72 particles/L, respectively. The probabilistic risk assessment indicates that the average risk possibility of MPs in Tai lake was 16 %. Moreover, the risk characterization ratio indicated that 22 % of the locations in Tai lake showed an acute ecological risk, while 7.4 % exhibit a chronic ecological risk. The assessment concluded that MPs reported in the literature could pose a considerable risk to Tai lake biota. However, the risk associated with MPs followed descending order: river >lake > estuary waters. Our research supplies valuable insights for the assessment of ecological risks associated with MPs on a whole watershed scale.

Abstract:Although developing countries are huge producers of plastic debris, few studies on MPs in freshwater systems, a major contributor to oceans, have been done. In this investigation, we estimated the abundance, shape, size, and potential sources of MPs in river water and sediments taken from the freshwater of the Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers in Jamshedpur. Four types of MPs were identified among the analysed data: fragments, films, foams, and fibers. These MPs were examined using a stereomicroscope and their polymer composition was identified using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. The quantitative assessment of our study revealed a mean abundance of MPs 9.55 ± 4.87 items/L (average ± SD, n = 9) in water and 270.88 ± 105.89 items/ kg (average ± SD, n = 9) in sediment samples. The morphological distribution of MP particles revealed that fibers account of 44.2 % of MPs particles, followed by film (24.4 %), fragments (20.9 %), and pellets/foam (10.5 %) in water. Fiber accounts 48.3 % of total MPs shape followed by fragments (20.6 %), foam/pellets (16.4 %) and film (14.7 %) in sediments. According to the MP size distribution, 84.9 % of the MPs were between < 125 μm to 1000 μm in water, while 94.0 % of the particles were between 125 μm and 5000 μm. The black color MPs accounted for 27. 0 % in water and 20.0 % in sediments, followed by blue (24.0 %), and white (19.0 %) in water and sediments, respectively. The most abundant polymer composition found was 30.0 % and 28.2 % of polyester in water and sediment samples respectively, which was followed by polypropylene 37.7 %, polyvinyl chloride 36.2 %, polyethylene 29.7 %, polystyrene 25.1 %, and polyamide 13.1 % in water and sediments. Microplastics and associated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface water and sediment of the Bay of Bengal coastal area, India: sources, pathway and ecological risk

Abstract:In the aquatic environment around the world, microplastic contamination has been a common and ongoing issue. Particularly, the ability of microplastics to absorb persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and then transmit these POPs to aquatic creatures has attracted a lot of interest. A stereomicroscope was used to detect the size, shape, and color of the microplastics (MPs), and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to identify the polymer composition of the MPs. To address MP transit, destiny, and mitigation, a study of MP pollution coastal areas is required. In the current study, MP pollution in the collected sample from upper layer of water and sediment of the Digha and Puri beaches along the coast of BOB was evaluated. The average concentration with SD of MPs observed in water was 5.3 ± 1.8 items/L whereas, in sediments, it was 173.4 ± 40.1 items/kg at Digha beach. The mean MPs abundance in the Puri beach was 6.4 ± 1.7 items/L in the water and 190.4 ± 28.0 items/kg in the sediments. The investigated total 16-PAHs concentrations were 164.7 ng/g, 121.9 ng/g, 73.6 ng/g, and 101.3 ng/g on the MPs surface of foam, fragment, fibers, and film respectively in the studied MPs sample. Smaller than 1000 μm size of MPs are distributed in the largest concentration. Fibers, films, fragments, and foam were the most common shapes of MPs. The molecular structure of MPs in water and sediment samples was analysed i.e., polyesters (PEs), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polystyrene (PS), polyamide (PA), polycarbonates (PC), and polyurethane (PU). The obtained result offers an accurate assessment of the PLI, and the investigated polymer facilitates determining the polymer hazard levels, which emphasizes the risk associated with it.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are an emerging global concern due to severe toxicological risks for ecosystems and public health. Therefore, this is the first study in Bangladesh to assess MP pollution and its associated risks for ecosystems and human health in the outdoor urban environment using machine learning and multivariate approaches. The occurrences of MPs in the urban road dust were 52.76 ± 20.24 particles/g with high diversity, where fiber shape (77%), 0.1–0.5 mm size MPs (75%), blue color (26%), and low-density polyethylene (24%) polymer was the dominating MPs category. Pollution load index value (1.28–4.42), showed severe pollution by MPs. Additionally, the contamination factor (1.00–5.02), and Nemerow pollution index (1.38–5.02), indicate moderate to severe MP pollution. The identified polymers based on calculated potential ecological risk (2248.52 ± 1792.79) and polymer hazard index (814.04 ± 346.15) showed very high and high risks, respectively. The occurrences of MPs could effectively be predicted by random forest, and support random vector machine, where EC, salinity, pH, OC, and texture classes were the influencing parameters. Considering the human health aspect, children and adults could be acutely exposed to 19259.68 and 5777.90 MP particles/ year via oral ingestion. Monte-Carlo-based polymers associated cancer risk assessment results indicate moderate risk and high risk for adults and children, respectively, where children were more vulnerable than adults for MP pollution risks. Overall assessment mentioned that Dhaka was the most polluted division among the other divisions.

Abstract:Groundwater (GW) plays a crucial role as the primary source of potable water in numerous developing nations. However, the increasing presence of microplastics (MPs) represents a concealed danger, threatening activities that guarantee safe drinking water in these countries. Despite this, there is limited awareness about the widespread existence of MPs in these regions of the world. In this study, we investigated the contamination levels, distribution, morphological characteristics, chemical composition, and associated public health risk of MPs in groundwater samples from six coastal districts of Bangladesh using stereomicroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). MPs were prevalent at all sampling stations, with average concentrations of 24.63 ± 16.13 items/L and a range of 4–75 items/L. The majority of MPs (97.6%) were fibers, indicating a likely origin from fabric disintegration during drying, washing, discarded fishing nets, personal care items, and municipal waste. Smaller-sized MPs (<0.5 mm), transparent and violet-colored, were predominantly observed. Additionally, FTIR confirmed the presence of plastic polymers, including low-density polyethylene (LDPE), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), and polyethylene terephthalate (PETE). Despite the high visibility observed or focus given for PETE, PE was found to be abundant. These are thought to have come from runoff from agricultural fields, seeping from landfills where plastic trash is disposed of, synthetic fabrics, and inappropriate plastic product disposal. Estimated dietary intake was recorded as 1.85 particles/person/day (i.e., 675 particles/year), suggesting the possible health risk to consumers. Hazard analyses based on the polymeric risk score revealed diverse risks associated with polymer levels, with PETE indicating a medium risk and other polymers, e.g., HDPE, LDPE, and EVA at 39%, 31%, and 17%, respectively, showing a minor risk to human health from drinking water from the studied sources. This is the first study from the regions, and the findings will be valuable for identifying sources, implementing control measures, shaping policies, and safeguarding public health against plastic pollution.

Abstract:Sediment and surface water samples were examined along the Surma river, Bangladesh. The study examined abundances and physical traits (size, color, shape) of microplastics. Fiber shapes, black color, and 1‐2 mm sizes' are the most prevalent type of MPs in both sediment and surface water. Microplastics (MPs), or tiny pieces of plastic, have become a major global environmental problem because of their ubiquitous availability and possible risks to aquatic ecosystems. Surma is one of the vital rivers in Bangladesh located in the northeast part, with higher chances of MP pollution due to different anthropogenic reasons. In this instance, we carried out the investigation on the abundance, distribution, and characteristics of MPs in the sediment and surface water of the river. Samples were collected from 15 major locations of the Surma river flowing through Sylhet municipality. MPs particles were isolated from sediments and water samples utilizing techniques like sieve analysis, wet peroxide oxidation, density separation, and filtration and then characterized using a stereomicroscope. The abundance of MPs recorded 8 to 18 items/L in water samples (mean ± SD: 12.33 ± 2.98 items/L) and 360 to 1120 items/kg in sediment samples (mean ± SD: 522.67 ± 197.84 items/kg). The prominent size, shape, and color of MPs isolated from sediments were 1–2 mm sizes (24.49%), fragments (47.71%), and black (30.65%). However, for water samples, 1–2 mm sizes (37.22%), fiber shapes (48.48%), and transparent colors (38.46%) were dominant features. Conspicuously, in both sediment and water samples, there was a higher prevalence of smaller sized particles, posing a significant threat to the ecosystem. This heightened risk stems from the increased likelihood of ingestion by microorganisms, as well as the larger surface area of these particles, which may serve as vectors for other pollutants like organic pollutants and heavy metals. A greater abundance of fibers suggests an increased presence of lightweight particles in the water and sediment. Furthermore, the transparent color of the MPs in water might be impacted by prolonged weathering in the river, while the presence of black‐colored MPs in sediment points to the existence of plastic pellets originating from industrial and diverse sources. Future studies should concentrate on long‐term and broad monitoring, ecological effects, and practical mitigation techniques for MPs, providing essential baseline data to guide the formulation of policies in developing nations. Practitioner points 12.33 items/L in surface water and 522.67 items/kg in sediment were observed. High correlation indicates a single MP source in mainstream water, differing from sediment. Fiber shapes, black, and transparent colored MPs are dominant. Higher prevalence of smaller sized MPs, posing a significant threat to the aquatic ecosystem.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) contamination has been reported in all environmental compartments, but very limited information is available at higher-altitude lakes. Nainital Lake, located at a high altitude in the Indian Himalayas, has various ecosystem services and is the major source of water for Nainital town, but the MP abundance is still unknown. This study presents the first evidence of the abundance and distribution of MP in Nainital Lake. Surface water and sediment samples were analysed from 16 different sites in and around the catchment area of Nainital Lake. The MP were observed in all the samples, and their abundance in surface water was 8.6–56.0 particles L −1 in the lake and 2.4–88.0 particles L −1 in hotspot sites. In the surface sediment, MP abundance ranged from 0.4–10.6 particles g −1 , while in the hotspot sediment, the mean abundance was 0.6 ± 0.5 particles g −1 . Fibers were the dominant MP, while 0.02–1 mm were the predominant size of MP particles. The results of chemical characterization showed the presence of six polymers, among which high-density polyethylene was the most abundant. The Polymer Hazard Index assessment classified the identified polymers as low-to high-risk categories, with a higher abundance of low- (polypropylene) and medium- (polyethylene)-risk polymers. Tourist activities and run-off catchments can be considered the major sources of MP, which can affect the ecosystem. Minimal concentrations of MP were observed in the tube well and drinking water, which depicts the direct risks to humans and, thus, the need for remedial measures to prevent MP contamination in drinking water. This study improves the knowledge of MP contamination in the higher-altitude freshwater lake, which can be the major pathway for the transport of MP to the rivers, and also emphasizes the need for waste management in Nainital town.
