Abstract:Microplastic (MP) pollution is an emerging environmental problem, due to its universal dispersion. In the present study, we determined the MP pollution in water, sediment, and fish samples of three different urban lakes of Bangladesh to assess the bioaccumulation of MPs from the lake environment to fish's edible (flesh) and inedible tissue (gut), ecological risk and consequent human exposure to MPs by fish consumption. A total of forty-three fishes were collected from Jahangirnagar Co-Operative Housing Society (JCHS), Dhanmondi Lake (DL), and Saturia Thana Lake (MST). The average MP concentration in sediment and water of the lakes is 7588 ± 4353 MPs/kg dry weights; 142 ± 22 MPs/L, respectively. MPs were identified in the edible (2.8–20.2 MPs/g) and inedible (2.27–20.93 MPs/g) tissue of all fish species. The highest number of MPs was observed in the flesh of Labeo bata of the JCHS Lake and in the gut of Catla catla of DL. The most dominant shape of MPs was fiber and fragment, 0.1–0.4 mm was the dominant size range, and blue, purple, and transparent were the dominant colors. The presence of six polymer types was revealed by FT-IR analysis, which were polystyrene, polypropylene, nitrile, ethylene vinyl acetate, high-density polyethylene, and nylon. The concentration of MPs in fish is found to increase with the increment in body weight. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) analysis reveals that among all the fish species, Labeo bata and Oreochromis mossambicus accumulate the highest number of MPs from the lake environment. The pollution load index of MPs indicates that the sampling sites were within hazard levels III–IV. Estimated annual intake reveals that humans will be exposed to the highest number of MPs if they consume the flesh of Labeo bata of DL and JCHS Lake.

Abstract:The Bay of Bengal (BoB) is home to a range of commercially important species with different food habits and feeding features. Microplastic (MP) contamination in the fish of BoB, like in many other marine environments, is a significant environmental concern. The study aimed to investigate the presence of microplastics (MPs) in the gastrointestinal tracts (GITs) of selected commercial marine fishes from the Bangladesh coast of the BoB. Six fish species ( Escualosa thoracata , Tenualosa ilisha , Johnius belangerii , Trichiurus lepturus , Planiliza parsia , and Mystus gulio ) were investigated ( n = 120) following hydrogen peroxide digestion, and floatation (saline solution) protocols. After analyses, a total number of 696 MPs (dimension 0.3 to 5 mm) were identified. Moreover, the highest occurrence of MPs in fish GITs was found in planktivorous fish (average of 7.7 items/individual), followed by omnivorous (average of 5.2 items/individual), and carnivorous fish (average of 4.6 items/individual) ( p < 0.001). However, planktivorous E. thoracata showed the highest number of MPs per g of GIT (average of 30.99 items/g GIT), whereas T. ilisha showed the lowest count (average of 0.77 items/g GIT). Different types of MPs (fibers (19 to 76%), fragments (6 to 61%), films (8 to 35%), microbeads (0 to 5%), and foams (0 to 2%)) were also observed. In terms of the color of MPs, the transparent, black, green, and blue types were the most common. Polymers were found as polyethylene (35 to 43%), polyethylene terephthalate (28 to 35%), polyamide (20 to 31%), and polystyrene (0 to 7%). The study provides a significant incidence of MPs in fish from the Bangladesh part of the BoB, which is very concerning. Therefore, long-term research is indispensable to ascertain the variables affecting the presence of MPs in fish, their origins, and their potential effects on the BoB fisheries. Stringent policies on plastic use and disposal should be strongly urged in this coastal region.

Abstract:Plastic pollution has become a global issue nowadays. Due to the increased population in developing countries, we largely depend on fish from our aquaculture industry to meet the required protein demand. Though several studies documented plastic ingestion in freshwater and marine organisms, very limited studies have been conducted to elucidate microplastic (MP) contamination in commercial fish feed. Therefore, this study was designed to identify, quantify, and characterize microplastics (MPs) in commercial fish feeds in Bangladesh and assess possible health risks in fish consuming different commercial fish feeds. All fish feed samples were 100 % contaminated with MPs, where the mean abundance of MPs ranged between 500 and 2200 MPs/kg. No significant differences among different types of feeds (e.g., starter, grower, and finisher) were observed in terms of MPs abundance (F = 0.999, p = 0.385). This study revealed that fiber was the most dominant shape of MPs (90 %), while the most dominant color of MPs was red (34 %), followed by black (31 %) and blue (19 %). The 100-1500 µm size class covers 88 % of the total MPs in the collected fish feed samples. Identified polymers in the samples were polyethylene (PE, 37.71 %), polyvinyl chloride (PVC, 27.14 %), polypropylene (PP, 22.08 %), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET, 13.07 %), respectively, where PE and PVC fall under the risk category IV to V. The Pollution load index (PLI) values of all fish feed samples were <10, indicating the risk category of I (low risk). Therefore, this study highly recommended avoiding plastic materials in the packaging and storing purposes of feed ingredients in the feed mills to ensure contamination-free fish feed for sustainable aquaculture.

Abstract:The current knowledge regarding the presence of microplastics (MPs) in the digestive tracts of fish, particularly the non-edible parts, provides limited assistance in assessing the risk to human health and establishing guideline values for policy-making purposes. Therefore, we conducted the first investigation into MPs within the commercially significant catfish species S. silondia , form a major tropical estuary assessing their accumulation, characteristics, and associated risks in various tissues, particularly the consumable muscle. A sum of 132 MPs were identified, and the mean abundance of MPs were 7.40 ± 4.12 item/DT, 3.20 ± 1.69 item/gill and 2.60 ± 1.65 item/muscle found in digestive tract (DT), gill and muscle of the fish, respectively. The strong relationships of MPs among three different tissues (y = 0.6069x - 22.69, R 2 = 0.7589) indicated the pathways and how MPs were influenced by the physiology of organisms. The prevalence of MPs in fish muscle demonstrated their trophic transmission to humans. Moreover, fishes with higher weight had higher MPs in their gill, and DT. The dominant type, color and size of MPs were fibrous (89.67%), violet (41%) and 1) indicated moderately to highly contaminated fish with MPs ingestion. While the complete understanding of the direct negative effects of microplastics (MPs) on human health remains elusive, their presence in estuarine fish raises concerns for both human and ecosystem health. The findings will be useful for assessing the hazards to human health from exposure to MPs and for creating effective risk management plans to reduce those risks.

Abstract:Background: Disordered miR-26b expression has been linked to the development of many diseases induced by hepatitis B virus (HBV). Results: miR-26b inhibits HBV replication, and HBV infection suppresses miR-26b expression. Conclusion: miR-26b acts as a host restriction factor to attenuate HBV transcription and replication. Significance: The functional interplay between HBV infection and miR-26b may influence the outcome of viral proliferation and virus-induced diseases. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) causes acute and chronic hepatitis in humans, and HBV infection is a major threat to global health. HBV replication is regulated by a series of host factors, including microRNAs (miRNAs), which are highly conserved small noncoding RNAs that participate in a variety of physiological and pathological processes. Here, we report that a chemically synthesized mimic of miR-26b inhibited HBV antigen expression, transcription, and replication, whereas antisense knockdown of endogenous miR-26b enhanced HBV replication in HepG2 cells. Overexpression and knockdown experiments showed that miR-26b significantly decreased HBV enhancer/promoter activities. We identified the cysteine- and histidine-rich domain containing 1 (CHORDC1) as a novel host factor target of miR-26b. CHORDC1 protein but not mRNA was markedly decreased by miR-26b overexpression via base-pairing with complementary sequences in the 3′UTR of its mRNA. Overexpression and knockdown studies showed that CHORDC1 increased viral antigen expression, transcription, and replication by elevating HBV enhancer/promoter activities. Conversely, HBV infection suppressed miR-26b expression and increased CHORDC1 protein levels in human liver cells. Another mature miRNA of the hsa-miR-26 family, miR-26a, had a similar function as miR-26b in targeting CHORDC1 and affecting HBV production. These results suggest that suppression of miR-26b expression up-regulates its target gene CHORDC1, which increases HBV enhancer/promoter activities and promotes viral transcription, gene expression, and replication. Our study could provide new insights into miRNA expression and the persistence of HBV infection.
Microplastics in Different Tissues of a Commonly Consumed Fish, Scomberomorus guttatus, from a Large Subtropical Estuary: Accumulation, Characterization, and Contamination Assessment

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) ingestion by fish signifies a worldwide threat to human health but limited research has examined their existence within the consumable portions (muscle) of fish. Thus, this study was undertaken to unveil the prevalence, characterization, and contamination extent of MPs across various body tissues, including the muscle of the king mackerel (S. guttatus) from the lower Meghna estuary in Bangladesh—a pioneering investigation in this region. In our analysis, we identified a total of 487 MPs, with an average abundance of 48.7 ± 20.3 MPs/individual. These MPs were distributed across different tissues, with respective concentrations of 0.84 ± 0.45 items/g in the digestive tract, 2.56 ± 0.73 items/g in the gills, and 0.3 ± 1.72 items/g in the muscle tissue. The observed variations among these tissue types were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Moreover, a significant positive correlation indicated that fish with higher weight had higher MPs in their gills and DT (digestive tract). The majority were <0.5 mm in size (97.74%) and exhibited a fiber-like shape (97.74%), with a notable prevalence of transparent (25.87%) and a pink coloration (27.92%). Remarkably, the majority of MPs were discovered within the size range of <0.5–1 mm (100%), particularly in the muscle tissue, signifying a substantial transfer of MPs into the human diet. Besides, we discovered only three polymer types of microplastics which could be attributed to the extensive use of food packaging, plastic containers, wrapping plastics, residential garbage, and plastic pipes that end up in the aquatic environment via river discharges. The contamination factor (CF) values of fish muscle (5.75) and the digestive tract (5.50) indicated that these fish organs were considerably contaminated (3 < CF 1) indicated a high contamination level for MPs pollution of S. guttatus in the lower Meghna River estuary.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate microplastic (MP) exposure by Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in laboratory conditions. A total of 150 tilapia fishes were equally distributed randomly in 15 different glass tanks with five experimental conditions. Observed results depicted that the presence of MPs in different organs was mainly accumulated from the fish feed rather than externally added MPs in the culture tanks. It was also revealed that the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) was found to be the most susceptible to MPs accumulation followed by gills and muscles in order. However, muscle contained the least size of MPs followed by GITs and gills. A statistical test showed significant correlations among the average length and weight of fish with MP exposure. A filamentous shape was found to be dominant in both GITs and gills while fragment shape was dominant in muscles. FTIR results revealed a total of 12 different polymers in the fish of which two polymers (polyvinyl alcohol and ethylene vinyl acetate) were not detected in the feed-only tanks. Polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were found to be dominant polymers in all the experimental GIT, gills, and muscle organs. FESEM results indicated the presence of different textures including cracks, edges, flakes, scratches, grooves, and adhering particles. EDX results exhibited the presence of Na, Si, K, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, and Cd in the analyzed samples that may pose additional health risks. Thus, this study could act as baseline data for laboratory-based studies of aquaculture species in future research.

Abstract:The study aimed to assess and characterize microplastics (MPs) in muscles, guts, and gills of six commercially important marine fish from the Bay of Bengal. FTIR was utilized to identify MP's polymer compositions. A total 7085 MPs identified, where tuna exhibited the highest count and Bombay duck had the lowest. MPs abundance (MPs/g) was ranged from 1.56 ± 0.39 to 7.16 ± 1.36 in muscles, 1.91 ± 0.32 to 4.46 ± 0.75 in guts, and 2.36 ± 0.24 to 6.53 ± 1.58 in gills. The predominant MPs were 1-5 mm size (33.33-62.78 %), white/transparent color (18.45-54.63 %), filament shapes (75.00-94.71), and fiber types (73.21-94.71 %). FTIR revealed MPs 58.89 % polyethylene, 21.67 % polypropylene, 17.22 % polyester, and 2.22 % non-plastic compositions. Cluster analysis grouped two species with 50 % similarity, while PCA indicated significant variations among principal components (14-69.4 %) highlighting the dominance of fiber, particles, and 0.5-1.0 mm MPs in the fish tissues. The prevalence of MPs in seafood underscores measures to safeguard both the marine ecosystem and human health.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) have been recognized as emerging aquatic pollutants receiving major concern due to their detrimental effects on aquatic life. Nile Tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus is a model species considered in toxicological studies to address the effects of pollutants in freshwater animals. However, comprehensive knowledge comparing the impacts on fish across various MPs polymers is scarce. Therefore, the overarching aim of the current study was to examine the bioconcentration of MPs polymers: polyvinylchloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and their toxic effects on growth, and behavioral responses, hematology, and histology of gills, liver, and intestine in O. niloticus . Fishes were subjected to a 21-day dietary exposure to MPs by assigning them into six treatment groups: T 1 (4% of PVC), T 2 (4% of PP), T 3 (4% of PET), T 4 (8% of PVC), T 5 (8% of PP), T 6 (8% of PET), and control (0% of MPs), to assess the effects on fish across the polymers and dosage. Results showed several abnormalities in anatomical and behavioral parameters, lower growth, and high mortality in MPs-exposed fish, indicating a dose-dependent relationship. The elevated dosage of polymers raised the bioavailability of PVC, PP, and PET in gills and gut tissues. Noteworthy erythrocyte degeneration referred to cytotoxicity and stress imposed by MPs, whereas the alterations in hematological parameters were possibly due to blood cell damage, also indicating mechanisms of defense against MPs toxicity. Histopathological changes in the gills, liver, and intestine confirmed the degree of toxicity and associated dysfunctions in fish. A higher sensitivity of O. niloticus to PET-MPs compared to other polymers is likely due to its chemical properties and species-specific morphological and physiological characteristics. Overall, the present study reveals valuable insights into the emerging threat of MPs toxicity in freshwater species, which could be supportive of future toxicological research.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) contamination in fish species was one of the emerging environmental issues as a result of the widespread presence of plastic pollution in the environment. The presence of MPs in Thailand's freshwater was scant, and in contrast to other countries, little was known about the presence of this contaminant in freshwater fish. Hence, the purpose of this study was to examine the abundance, characteristics, and variation of MPs in various Thai commercial freshwater fish species. In order to compare the differences in MP ingestion rates across different feeding zones, 166 fish representing 24 species from various feeding zones were collected. MPs were found in the gastrointestinal tracts (GIT) of all fish samples tested, which was a substantially larger number than previously reported in other locations. Of all the fish species, Anabas testudineus, Labeo rohita, and Oreochromis mossambicus had the highest concentration of MPs (34.90 ± 21.43, 34.50 ± 7.78, 34.10 ± 11.15 items/individuals). Microscopical examinations showed that the majority of MPs were fiber-shaped and blue in color. Fourier transform infrared analysis (FTIR) showed that the polymers found in fish GIT were polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl acetate, poly (methyl vinyl ether), poly (methyl vinyl ether), polybutadiene, poly (ethylene-co-propylene), poly (ethylene glycol) tetrahydrofurfuryl ether, poly (methyl phenyl siloxane), poly (styrene-co-divinylbenzene), and polyvinylidene fluoride. The results of this study demonstrate that demersal fish had a higher concentration of MPs than benthopelagic and pelagic fish, indicating that plastic ingestion in fish may be related to the feeding habitat. However, it was not discovered that differences in the fish's body weight and length affected the MPs' ingestion. Our findings will help people in Thailand understand which freshwater fish and fish from which feeding zones are more contaminated with MPs for human consumption.

Abstract:Plastic pollution is a global concern, leading to the abundance of macro- and microplastics (MPs) in the marine environment and subsequent accumulation in many marine organisms, particularly small pelagic and oceanic fish species. These small fishes are usually considered as the non-target catch or by-products of marine capture fisheries. However, these by-catch fishes convert into fishmeal due to their excellent nutritional value, and thereby, it used as the primary ingredient of artificial feeds for aquaculture and livestock animal production. The fishmeal and fish feed facilitates MPs’ entry into the aquaculture systems when the MPs−contaminated feeds are supplied to cultured fish for regular feeding. Thus, MPs get access to interact with the elements of the culture pond ecosystem and leading to subsequent alterations in the physiological and behavioral attributes of cultured fishes. Consequently, MPs may accumulate in the edible portions of cultured fishes, which may cause severe physiological disorders in fish consumers. Thus, human exposure to MPs becomes a significant threat to global public health. Therefore, this review discussed the factors associated with MPs’ introduction to the aquaculture systems via fishmeal. In addition, this article enlightened the possible consequences of MPs on the pond ecosystem, cultured fish physiology, and consumer health. We hypothesized that the growing concern among people about MPs might be impacted the demand for aquaculture goods. This study recommended taking necessary steps towards improving the MPs’ screening process during fish feed production and focusing on more exclusive studies to elucidate the impacts of MPs on sustainable aquaculture production.

Bacterial communities on food court tables and cleaning equipment in a shopping mall

Abstract:SUMMARY The food court at a shopping mall is a potential transfer point for pathogenic microbes, but to date, this environment has not been the subject of detailed molecular microbiological study. We used a combination of culture-based and culture-independent approaches to investigate the types and numbers of bacteria present on food court tables, and on a food court cleaning cloth. Bacteria were found at 102–105 c.f.u./m2 on food court tables and 1010 c.f.u./m2 on the cleaning cloth. Tag-pyrosequencing of amplified 16S rRNA genes revealed that the dominant bacterial types on the cleaning cloth were genera known to include pathogenic species (Stenotrophomonas, Aeromonas), and that these genera were also evident at lower levels on table surfaces, suggesting possible cross-contamination. The evidence suggests a public health threat is posed by bacteria in the food court, and that this may be due to cross-contamination between cleaning equipment and table surfaces.

Abstract:Fish feed is becoming an increasingly vital source of nourishment for farmed fish, which are mainly coming from marine fish and agricultural sources. Anthropogenic particles, such as microplastics, are abundant in both marine fish and agricultural byproducts that are utilized to make fish feed. This study investigated whether fish feed could be a source of microplastic contamination, and revealed that a 20 weeks adult farmed tilapia fish might consume up to 268.45 ± 1.438 microplastic particles via fish feed where finisher type feeds were found to be mostly contributory in this number. The microplastics were initially observed with a stereomicroscope and FESEM-EDS. Polymeric composition of microplastics was determined to be polypropylene (PP), nylon-6 (NY-6), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyethylene (PE), high- and low-density polyethylene (HDPE, LDPE), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), polycarbonate (PC), poly vinyl acetate (PVAc), poly urethane (PU) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) by FTIR. Results also revealed that the size of microplastic particles in all fish feed ranged from 14 μm to 4480 μm, with 550 ± 45.45 to 11,600 ± 56.1 microplastic particles/kg of fish feed. The FESEM-EDS data demonstrated to overlook the microplastic surface along with attachment of heavy metals onto that surface such as Pb, Ni, and Co in finisher type feed that could create additional health risks.

Abstract:In today's world, microplastic contamination of aquatic systems is a subject of major concern. In this study, the incidence of microplastics in freshwater fish from both farmed and wild sources was evaluated. Wild catla ( Gibelion catla ), stinging catfish ( Heteropneustes fossilis ), rui ( Labeo rohita ), tengara catfish ( Mystus tengara ), and pabdah catfish ( Ompok pabda ) were collected from Padma River, Turag River, and Bhairab River. Farmed fishes of same species were collected from Mymensingh and Chandpur fish markets. A total of 68 (43.6%) microparticles out of 156 were identified as microplastics using ATR-FTIR. About 66.67% (20 out of 30) of farmed fish samples had microplastics in their digestive system, while 88.4% (23 of 26) of wild fish samples presented microplastics. There was a significant difference ( p < 0.05) in average microplastic count between wild and farmed fish. Average microplastic count also showed a significant difference among five fish species ( p < 0.01). A variety of polymers were observed, with polyethylene being the most abundant, followed by polyester, polypropylene, polyamide-6, and polyurethane. This study suggests that microplastic contamination is ubiquitous and contamination is common in all of the fish species investigated, independent of their origin (wild or farmed). However, wild fish population is at a greater risk of ingesting microplastics. This study, for the first time ever, reports plastic pollution in freshwater fishes of Bangladesh from wild and farmed sources.

Abstract:Microplastic (MP) pollution in freshwater environments has drawn considerable attention over the decades due to the risk posed by MPs to the aquatic fauna and human health. In this study, the occurrence of MPs was assessed from the gastrointestinal tracts (GIT) of indigenous fishes from Bhogdoi River, a tributary of River Brahmaputra, northeast hill region, Assam, India. All the fish species (n = 180) analysed showed 100% occurrence of MPs sampled from three stations of River Bhogdoi. A total of 488 microplastic particles were recorded from GIT of fishes collected. The mean abundance of MPs was highest in Station-II (7.64 ± 2.77 numbers individual−1) with lowest in S-I (3.17 ± 0.99 numbers individual−1). The MP size of 100–500 μm, MP shape of fibre (43.33%) and fragments (35.33%), blue colour MPs (26–37%) and polymer type PA (23–30%) were most prevalent in fishes analysed from River Bhogdoi. The mean abundance of MPs was higher in herbivore fishes (8.52 ± 1.22 numbers individual−1) as compared to carnivorous and omnivorous fish species with highest abundance in Labeo rohita (12.11 ± 2.13 numbers individual−1). Fibre and fragments with size range of 100–500 μm were dominant among all the feeding habits. Blue and black colour MPs were abundant among herbivore and carnivore fishes. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results confirmed that polyamide and polypropylene were the most abundant MP polymer in the fishes analysed. The present study provides baseline information of MPs in River Bhogdoi, Assam, for its future monitoring and assessment of contaminants.

Salmeterol: a novel drug for the treatment of asthma.

Abstract:The beta-stimulant bronchodilators have proved clinically very effective in the treatment of reversible airways obstructive disease. However, the currently available drugs are relatively short-acting. Salmeterol, a new long-acting, beta 2-adrenoceptor agonist has been developed and shown to induce persistent relaxation of airways smooth muscle in vitro and sustained bronchodilatation in vivo, and to have significant anti-inflammatory activity in the lung, suppressing inflammatory mediator release and inflammatory cell infiltration and inhibiting vascular permeability and oedema formation. Clinical studies in asthmatic patients have demonstrated that salmeterol causes bronchodilatation for 12-14 hours. In addition, treatment with salmeterol produces a marked increase in morning peak flow, a reduction in diurnal variation, and the elimination of nocturnal asthma symptoms. The combination of long-acting bronchodilator and anti-inflammatory effects suggests that salmeterol may represent an important new advance in the treatment of bronchial asthma.
