Abstract:Global production of plastics has increased dramatically in recent decades and is considered a major threat to marine life and human health due to their stability, persistence, and potential to move through food chains. The study was conducted to detect, identify and quantify microplastics (MP) in the gastrointestinal tract (GI) of some commercial fish species in the North Persian Gulf in Bushehr Province: Psettodes erumei, Sphyraena jello, Sillago sihama, Metapenaeus affinis and Portunus segnis. A total of 216 plastic particles were collected from 102 individuals (72.68% of all sampled individuals; MP prevalence of 85.1% for M. affinis, 80% for P. segnis, 70% for P.erumei, 60.3% for S.sihama, 45.2% for S.jello). The average number of microplastics per organism was 2.26 ± 0.38 MP/ind (considering only species that ingested plastic, n = 102) and 1.51 ± 0.40 pieces/ind (considering all species studied, n = 140). Microfibers accounted for 58.49% of the total microplastics, followed by fragments (33.02%) and pellets (8.49%). The most common color of microplastic was black (52.83%), followed by blue (22.64%) and transparent (15.09%). The length of microplastic ranged from 100 to 5000 μm with an average of 854 ± 312 μm. Microplastics were significantly (p < 0.05) abundant in two shrimp studied: M. affinis and P. segnis (plastic in 80% of individuals studied) and to a lesser extent in the pelagic barracuda fish S. jello (plastic in 45% of individuals studied). The main synthetic polymers identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were polyethylene (38%), polypropylene (24%), polystyrene (17%), polyethylene terephthalate (11%) and polyamide (10%). The pollutant load index and lifetime accumulation index were calculated to identify the most polluted species and their toxicity to human health. The white shrimp M. affinis was identified as the most polluted and toxic species for MP based on PLI. The present study can provide valuable data for further research and a background for the control and monitoring of this pollutant in the coastal environment of Bushehr province.
Preliminary screening of microplastic contamination in different marine fish species of Taif market, Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Abstract Microplastics (MPs), as a physical anthropogenic contaminant, represent a serious, human health concern due to their toxicity and ability to act as vectors for other pollutants and pathogens. This study aimed to screen for MP contamination in marine fish in Taif market, Saudi Arabia. A total of 22 fish species were used according to their different marine habitats and feedings. We have focused on extracting MPs from gills and muscles using KOH digestion. Nile red dye was used for the MP identification under fluorescence microscopy followed by the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. This study has reported MP contamination in gills and muscles of all the studied fish, in which poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) was present in epipelagic species, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and poly(2,4,6,-tribromostyrene) (PtBS) were present in pelagic species, and PtBS and chlorosulfonated polyethylene were present in demersal/benthopelagic species. Moreover, benthic fish samples contain PtBS particles; reef-associated species have three different MP particles/fiber PtBS, PVDF, and poly(vinyl formal) and the rest of the studied species samples contain PtBS. The results highlight that the MP pollution increased to reach different species from the pelagic species to the benthic ones. PtBS as a type of polystyrene was the most dominant MP found in most species.

Abstract:The escalating global microplastic (MP) pollution severely threatens marine life due to insufficient waste management and widespread single-use plastic. This study focuses on assessing MP contamination in commercial prawns from Gujarat State, India. Ten prawn species collected at five main fishing harbors revealed 590 MP particles in their gastrointestinal tracts, averaging 6.08 ± 5.96 MPs/g and 1.15 ± 0.78 MPs/individual. Significant variations in contamination levels were observed between species and study sites. Pollution indices indicated very high contamination throughout the study sites. Threads were the predominant shape, with blue and black as prevalent colors. Size-wise, 1–2 mm MPs dominated. Polymer analysis identified polyethylene terephthalate, polyurethane, polystyrene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. The findings provided crucial preliminary information for ecotoxicology and seafood safety investigations regarding MP contamination in commercially important prawns.

Abstract:Background: Disordered miR-26b expression has been linked to the development of many diseases induced by hepatitis B virus (HBV). Results: miR-26b inhibits HBV replication, and HBV infection suppresses miR-26b expression. Conclusion: miR-26b acts as a host restriction factor to attenuate HBV transcription and replication. Significance: The functional interplay between HBV infection and miR-26b may influence the outcome of viral proliferation and virus-induced diseases. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) causes acute and chronic hepatitis in humans, and HBV infection is a major threat to global health. HBV replication is regulated by a series of host factors, including microRNAs (miRNAs), which are highly conserved small noncoding RNAs that participate in a variety of physiological and pathological processes. Here, we report that a chemically synthesized mimic of miR-26b inhibited HBV antigen expression, transcription, and replication, whereas antisense knockdown of endogenous miR-26b enhanced HBV replication in HepG2 cells. Overexpression and knockdown experiments showed that miR-26b significantly decreased HBV enhancer/promoter activities. We identified the cysteine- and histidine-rich domain containing 1 (CHORDC1) as a novel host factor target of miR-26b. CHORDC1 protein but not mRNA was markedly decreased by miR-26b overexpression via base-pairing with complementary sequences in the 3′UTR of its mRNA. Overexpression and knockdown studies showed that CHORDC1 increased viral antigen expression, transcription, and replication by elevating HBV enhancer/promoter activities. Conversely, HBV infection suppressed miR-26b expression and increased CHORDC1 protein levels in human liver cells. Another mature miRNA of the hsa-miR-26 family, miR-26a, had a similar function as miR-26b in targeting CHORDC1 and affecting HBV production. These results suggest that suppression of miR-26b expression up-regulates its target gene CHORDC1, which increases HBV enhancer/promoter activities and promotes viral transcription, gene expression, and replication. Our study could provide new insights into miRNA expression and the persistence of HBV infection.

Abstract:The Bay of Bengal (BoB) is home to a range of commercially important species with different food habits and feeding features. Microplastic (MP) contamination in the fish of BoB, like in many other marine environments, is a significant environmental concern. The study aimed to investigate the presence of microplastics (MPs) in the gastrointestinal tracts (GITs) of selected commercial marine fishes from the Bangladesh coast of the BoB. Six fish species ( Escualosa thoracata , Tenualosa ilisha , Johnius belangerii , Trichiurus lepturus , Planiliza parsia , and Mystus gulio ) were investigated ( n = 120) following hydrogen peroxide digestion, and floatation (saline solution) protocols. After analyses, a total number of 696 MPs (dimension 0.3 to 5 mm) were identified. Moreover, the highest occurrence of MPs in fish GITs was found in planktivorous fish (average of 7.7 items/individual), followed by omnivorous (average of 5.2 items/individual), and carnivorous fish (average of 4.6 items/individual) ( p < 0.001). However, planktivorous E. thoracata showed the highest number of MPs per g of GIT (average of 30.99 items/g GIT), whereas T. ilisha showed the lowest count (average of 0.77 items/g GIT). Different types of MPs (fibers (19 to 76%), fragments (6 to 61%), films (8 to 35%), microbeads (0 to 5%), and foams (0 to 2%)) were also observed. In terms of the color of MPs, the transparent, black, green, and blue types were the most common. Polymers were found as polyethylene (35 to 43%), polyethylene terephthalate (28 to 35%), polyamide (20 to 31%), and polystyrene (0 to 7%). The study provides a significant incidence of MPs in fish from the Bangladesh part of the BoB, which is very concerning. Therefore, long-term research is indispensable to ascertain the variables affecting the presence of MPs in fish, their origins, and their potential effects on the BoB fisheries. Stringent policies on plastic use and disposal should be strongly urged in this coastal region.

Assessment of microplastic pollution in eleven commercial fish species in the Gulf of İzmir (Aegean Sea, eastern Mediterranean)

Abstract:With global plastic production reaching 400 million tons in 2022, concerns about plastic pollution in the seas are increasing day by day. Therefore we focused on the abundance, characteristics, and chemical composition of potential anthropogenic origin MPs within the gastrointestinal tracts (GITs) of 11 commercial fish species in the Gulf of İzmir, an area heavily impacted by human activities. Within the scope of the study, 152 fish were sampled, and microplastics were found in 64 fish. In total, 77 MPs were identified based on ATR-FTIR analysis. Significant differences were found between species regarding MP abundance. Among the species, Scomber scombrus showed the highest MP ingestion. The MP abundance in the GIT of fish decreases from surface to deeper waters. There were also significant differences (p < 0.05) in MP abundance between pelagic and demersal fish species. Results showed that 50.6 % of MPs were fragments, and 49.4 % were fibers. The most common color was black. Seven polymer types were identified, and PE was the most common. The size of the identified MPs ranged from 101 to 4901 μm, and the average value was 715.83 ± 860.66 μm. This study sheds light on the MP contamination within commercial fish species in the Gulf of İzmir and emphasizes the urgent need for enhanced marine ecosystem conservation strategies. Our findings can serve as a basis for future studies by providing essential baseline data for implementing necessary policies and regulations.

Abstract:Concerning microplastics (MPs) contamination is increasing due their negative impacts on marine food webs and their potential toxicity to wildlife and humans. In this study, we analyze the presence of MPs in the stomachs of the commercial fish species Scomber colias (Atlantic chub mackerel) in the Gulf of Cadiz (GoC). Out of the 104 analyzed stomachs, 90.4 % contained some type of MPs, with an average of 5.4 MPs per individual. Of the 1152 MPs analyzed, 91.1 % were fibers, and 8.9 % fragments type. Fourier Transformation Infrared Spectrometry analysis was performed on 152 items, revealing that 73.6 % were MPs. The most common synthetic polymers found were polyamide (64 %), polypropylene (15 %), polystyrene (12 %), polyvinyl chloride (5 %), and polyethylene (4 %). The consistent ingestion of synthetic polymers by the individuals of Atlantic chub mackerel across different zones might suggest an even distribution of MP contamination throughout the GoC.

Microplastics in commercial fish digestive tracts from freshwater habitats in Northern Thailand

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) contamination in fish species was one of the emerging environmental issues as a result of the widespread presence of plastic pollution in the environment. The presence of MPs in Thailand's freshwater was scant, and in contrast to other countries, little was known about the presence of this contaminant in freshwater fish. Hence, the purpose of this study was to examine the abundance, characteristics, and variation of MPs in various Thai commercial freshwater fish species. In order to compare the differences in MP ingestion rates across different feeding zones, 166 fish representing 24 species from various feeding zones were collected. MPs were found in the gastrointestinal tracts (GIT) of all fish samples tested, which was a substantially larger number than previously reported in other locations. Of all the fish species, Anabas testudineus, Labeo rohita, and Oreochromis mossambicus had the highest concentration of MPs (34.90 ± 21.43, 34.50 ± 7.78, 34.10 ± 11.15 items/individuals). Microscopical examinations showed that the majority of MPs were fiber-shaped and blue in color. Fourier transform infrared analysis (FTIR) showed that the polymers found in fish GIT were polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl acetate, poly (methyl vinyl ether), poly (methyl vinyl ether), polybutadiene, poly (ethylene-co-propylene), poly (ethylene glycol) tetrahydrofurfuryl ether, poly (methyl phenyl siloxane), poly (styrene-co-divinylbenzene), and polyvinylidene fluoride. The results of this study demonstrate that demersal fish had a higher concentration of MPs than benthopelagic and pelagic fish, indicating that plastic ingestion in fish may be related to the feeding habitat. However, it was not discovered that differences in the fish's body weight and length affected the MPs' ingestion. Our findings will help people in Thailand understand which freshwater fish and fish from which feeding zones are more contaminated with MPs for human consumption.
Occurrence, characteristics and distribution of microplastics in commercial marine fishes of the Bay of Bengal

Abstract:The study aimed to assess and characterize microplastics (MPs) in muscles, guts, and gills of six commercially important marine fish from the Bay of Bengal. FTIR was utilized to identify MP's polymer compositions. A total 7085 MPs identified, where tuna exhibited the highest count and Bombay duck had the lowest. MPs abundance (MPs/g) was ranged from 1.56 ± 0.39 to 7.16 ± 1.36 in muscles, 1.91 ± 0.32 to 4.46 ± 0.75 in guts, and 2.36 ± 0.24 to 6.53 ± 1.58 in gills. The predominant MPs were 1-5 mm size (33.33-62.78 %), white/transparent color (18.45-54.63 %), filament shapes (75.00-94.71), and fiber types (73.21-94.71 %). FTIR revealed MPs 58.89 % polyethylene, 21.67 % polypropylene, 17.22 % polyester, and 2.22 % non-plastic compositions. Cluster analysis grouped two species with 50 % similarity, while PCA indicated significant variations among principal components (14-69.4 %) highlighting the dominance of fiber, particles, and 0.5-1.0 mm MPs in the fish tissues. The prevalence of MPs in seafood underscores measures to safeguard both the marine ecosystem and human health.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are globally observed in marine as well as freshwater habitats, and laboratory studies have shown that marine organisms can accidentally ingest them. Monitoring the MP ingestion by fish in the environment is very crucial for understanding the risk of consuming MP-contaminated fish for human health. In this study, we investigated MP ingestion in 400 fish individuals from the Veraval Coast, in the state of Gujarat, India. There was 100% MP occurrence in the inedible tissues of fish, and 68% of the analyzed fishes presented MPs in edible tissues. The most dominant MPs based on their size in fishes were 0.05–0.1 mm. One hundred percent presence of only fibres in edible tissue was observed, while in inedible tissue, it was 77%, 20.42% and 2.58% of fibre, fragment and film respectively. The most common MP colour was blue. The predominant polymers were low-density polyethylene (LDPE) followed by polypropylene, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polystyrene. This is the first study performed on MPs in marine fishes from this region. Our findings suggest that the abundance of MPs observed in this area is higher than in other states of the country.

Microplastics in the sediments along the eastern Arabian Sea shelf: Distribution, governing factors and risk assessment

Abstract:Despite the omnipresence of microplastics (MPs), the studies around the western continental shelf of Indian Ocean (Eastern Arabian Sea-EAS) are uncovered and understudied. Thus, the present study was focused to understand the spatial distribution, characterization and risk assessment of MPs in sediment across seven coastal transects (10 to 50 m) all along the EAS shelf. The highest MPs concentration (MPs/kg d.w.) was detected in the northern EAS (NEAS; 2260 ± 1050) followed by central (CEAS; 1550 ± 1012) and southern (SEAS; 1300 ± 513) shelves. Among all distinct locations, the highest concentration of MPs (2500 ± 1042) was detected in the north coastal sediments off Mumbai, followed by off Mangalore (1480 ± 1169) in the center and off Kochi (1350 ± 212) in the south. MPs were found in the form of fibres, fragments and films with a predominance of fibres (~70-80 %). Approximately 74.6 % of the total MPs were in the size range of 300 μm to 5 mm. The surface of detected MPs was rough, irregular, and mechanical weathering features such as pits, grooves also observed and spotted with bacterial community structures. Polypropylene (PP; 34 %), polyisoprene (PIP; 19 %), butyl rubber (18 %), and low-density polyethylene (LDPE; 13 %) were dominant polymers. The pollution load index highlighted minor risk while the polymer hazard index exhibited a hazard level of V. Litter discharge, fishing activities, and active marine navigation are among the many high-risk sources of plastic contamination in this region. Due to the prevailing winds, currents, low sea surface height, and high precipitation, the conditions in the EAS are favorable for the accumulation of both sea-based and land-based particles. Hence, this study provides novel insights into the potential risks posed by MP to the IO rim and associated marine ecosystem which will enhance our knowledge of the ecological implications and consequences of MP pollution, ultimately aiding in developing effective management and mitigation strategies.

Abstract:Marine ecosystems are known to be contaminated by microplastics (MPs); however, the nature and the accumulation rates of microplastics in organisms with different lifestyles and feeding behavior are not well known. To contribute to the clarification of the subject, the present study was conducted by examining the gastrointestinal tract of 366 fish individuals belonging to 13 species, collected by commercial fishermen in İzmir Bay (Aegean Sea). MPs were detected in all fish species and the average number was found to be 2.21 ± 40.7 items ind.-1. Fibers were the most frequently extracted type of MPs. The most frequently identified MPs were black and not larger than 3 mm. By using the ATR-FTIR spectroscopy on MPs obtained from fish species, it was determined that the most frequently consumed plastic polymers were polypropylene (PP, 34.5%) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET, 32.2%). MPs were detected in all fish species examined. In order to reduce MPs in the aquatic ecosystem, it is suggested that in the short term, single-use plastic products should be banned and the use of environmentally friendly products should be promoted, while in the medium term, awareness should be raised by emphasizing training in the use of these products, and in the long term, all nations should fulfil the commitments of the Global Plastic Environment Treaty and ensure their follow-up.'

Abstract:According to recent worldwide studies,microplastics (MPs) have beenfound in many fish species; however, the majority of research has focused only on the gastrointestinal tract, neglecting edible organs. This study aimed to assess the presence of microplastics in the non-edible (gills, digestive tract) and edible organs (liver) of three commercial fish species and twoby-catch species from the southern Baltic Sea. Fish (Clupea harengus, Gadus morhua, Platichthysflesus, Taurulusbaublis, Cyclopteruslumpus) were caught in 108 and 103 FAO Fishing Zones belonging to the Polish fishing zone. Theabundanceof MPs ranged from 1 to 12 items per fish, with an average of 4.09 items. MPs were observed in different organs, such as the liver, gills, and digestive tract of all five tested species.MPs recognized as fibers were the most abundant. Other shapes of polymers found in fish organs were pellets and particles of larger plastic pieces. The dominant color of the MPs was blue, but there were also red, black, transparent, yellow, green, and white items found. According to dimensions, dominantMPs were between 0.1 and 0.5 mm in size. The chemical characterization of polymers accomplished by the use of Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) Spectroscopy demonstrated the abundance of cellophane, polyamide, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl propionate, polyacrylonitrile, and polyester.

Abstract:In recent years, the microplastics (MPs) pollution in the offshore of microplastics has gradually become a concerning topic, and the understanding the accumulation of MPs in different tissues of organisms is also an important aspect. MPs can easily affect target tissues and transport related chemicals to humans through the food chain. MPs in the gills and guts of fish in the artificial reef area of Haizhou Bay and adjacent waters were detected in this study. The results showed that MPs were ubiquitous in the gills and guts of 26 species, with average quantities of 3.54 ± 2.14 pieces/fish and 3.00 ± 2.63 pieces/fish, respectively. More than 99% of the plastics were MPs that were less than 5 mm in diameter, with blue fiber being the most common. The number and quantity of MPs in gills were higher than those in guts in different habitat types, living water layers and feeding habits of fish. At the community level, as the body length and body weight increased, the quantity of MPs in the gills and guts showed a slight decreasing trend, and the correlation was not strong (P > 0.05). With increasing trophic levels (TLs), MPs were biomagnified in the guts (Trophic magnification factor, TMF = 1.37), but no change occurred in the gills (TMF = 1.00). We believe that biomagnification of MPs should be obtained by comparing the quantity of MPs in whole organisms rather than only in specific tissues before such conclusions can be defined. We recommend that periodic marine monitoring programs be implemented, as well as research into smaller MPs and even nanoplastics, to assess from the perspective of water, sediments, organisms and ecotoxicology, which will provide useful information for MPs pollution in artificial reefs and help to improve the MPs pollution database in China.

Assessment of microplastic contamination in some commercial fishes of the southern Caspian Sea and its potential risks

Abstract:This study examined the occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of 384 fishes classified into four species from 11 sites in 2022 from the southern part of the Caspian Sea. GITs of fishes were collected and digested in H 2 O 2 and KOH at 45 °C for 72 h. After filtration, extracted MPs were observed under a stereomicroscope, and selected MP particles were identified using FTIR. Presence of MPs was 68.98% in the GIT of the investigated fish. The mean abundance of MPs was 5.9 ± 0.9 MPs/GIT in Rutilus kutum , 9.2 ± 1.2 MPs/GIT in Chelon auratus , 3.6 ± 0.7 MPs/GIT in Alosa braschnikowi , and 2.7 ± 0.5 MPs/GIT in Vimba vimba . The predominant form of MPs was fiber (58.21%), followed by fragment (34.77%). Black (34.4%), white (19.07%), and blue (14.58%) were the most frequently detected colors of MPs. Overall, 6 MP polymers were identified, dominantly polypropylene (42.86%), polystyrene (17.86%), and cellophane (14.28%). The western part of the Caspian Sea (mostly tourist spots and urban areas) showed more MP pollution in fish compared to the eastern part. Polymer hazard index (PHI) revealed alarming microplastic contamination in the southern Caspian Sea. The PHI value of the present study showed that PES (PHI = 8403.78) and PS (PHI = 535.80) were "Extreme danger" and "Danger" risk categories, respectively.

Abstract:The widespread presence of microplastics in global aquatic ecosystems has aroused growing concerns regarding their potential impact on aquatic biota. Data show an extensive plastic pollution in coastal areas of Guangdong, China, however, to date there has been no quantitative study on the ingestion of microplastics by commercial fishes from the estuarine areas. In this study, we analyzed the abundance, characteristics, species-specific and spatial distribution of microplastics in six species of commercial fish from estuarine areas of Guangdong. Sixty-four fish samples from nineteen sampling sites were investigated. The average abundance of microplastics in the gastrointestinal tracts of the commercial fishes was 5.4 items/individual, indicating potential food safety. The majority of microplastics were fibers, white in color and less than 1 mm in size. Species-specific and spatial distribution of the microplastics were observed in terms of abundance, shape, color and size. Sillago japonica had the highest (6.9 items/individual), while Alepes djedaba had the lowest (3 items/individual) abundance of microplastics in the gastrointestinal tract. We recommend demersal Mugil cephalus and pelagic Konosirus punctatus to be considered as two species suitable for monitoring microplastics ingestion in the seafloor and water column communities.

Abstract:Microplastic (MP) pollution has become an emerging global concern in marine environments, but research on the uptake of MPs by commercial marine fish is relatively sparse. In this study, 29 commercial fish species (n = 584) with different feeding habits and trophic levels were collected from 8 sites along the Bohai Sea for MP uptake analysis. Approximately 85.4% of the total fish among all species ingested MPs, and there was an average abundance of 2.14 items/individual or 0.043 items/g of wet weight. Compared with other studies, MP pollution in fishes from the Bohai Sea was relatively moderate. The MPs were predominantly fibrous in shape and were cellophane, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP) in polymer composition. The highest abundance and polymer composition of MPs was observed in benthivores, suggesting that they might ingest these MPs from their food. The small fish Konosirus punctatus, which had a high level of MPs, may increase the risk of human exposure to the MPs when it is dried and consumed. Moreover, the spatial variation of MPs was determined in terms of abundance, shape composition, and major polymer types, but there was no marked relationship between MP abundance and the trophic levels of fish. Overall, this study provides a basis for the ecological risk assessment of MPs in fish and for a health risk assessment for human beings.

Abstract:In recent years, microplastics have been widely detected in marine fish and may pose potential risks to fish and human health. Even though microplastic pollution is a critical issue, it represents as yet non-quantified threat for some context in the marine environment. In this study, 271 individuals comprising 32 species of marine fish collected from Beibu Gulf were examined for microplastic prevalence, with an aim to provide data on the abundance, physical classification, and chemical characterization of microplastics in the great bay along South China Sea. The results showed that the occurrence rate of microplastics was 93.7%, and the average abundance of microplastics was 1.02 ± 0.18 items per individual (ranging from 0.03 to 4.00 items per individual). Microplastic accumulation was observed with a great variation in different species, body sizes, living habitats, and feeding habits of marine fishes. The dominant polymers identified by μ-FTIR were polyethylene terephthalate and polypropylene. Fibers, smaller sizes (<1 mm), and transparent color were the major characteristics of the detected microplastics, which might be important factors affecting the bioaccumulation. The present study revealed that microplastics in marine fish is a widespread issue in onshore Beibu Gulf.
