Abstract:Despite the omnipresence of microplastics (MPs), the studies around the western continental shelf of Indian Ocean (Eastern Arabian Sea-EAS) are uncovered and understudied. Thus, the present study was focused to understand the spatial distribution, characterization and risk assessment of MPs in sediment across seven coastal transects (10 to 50 m) all along the EAS shelf. The highest MPs concentration (MPs/kg d.w.) was detected in the northern EAS (NEAS; 2260 ± 1050) followed by central (CEAS; 1550 ± 1012) and southern (SEAS; 1300 ± 513) shelves. Among all distinct locations, the highest concentration of MPs (2500 ± 1042) was detected in the north coastal sediments off Mumbai, followed by off Mangalore (1480 ± 1169) in the center and off Kochi (1350 ± 212) in the south. MPs were found in the form of fibres, fragments and films with a predominance of fibres (~70-80 %). Approximately 74.6 % of the total MPs were in the size range of 300 μm to 5 mm. The surface of detected MPs was rough, irregular, and mechanical weathering features such as pits, grooves also observed and spotted with bacterial community structures. Polypropylene (PP; 34 %), polyisoprene (PIP; 19 %), butyl rubber (18 %), and low-density polyethylene (LDPE; 13 %) were dominant polymers. The pollution load index highlighted minor risk while the polymer hazard index exhibited a hazard level of V. Litter discharge, fishing activities, and active marine navigation are among the many high-risk sources of plastic contamination in this region. Due to the prevailing winds, currents, low sea surface height, and high precipitation, the conditions in the EAS are favorable for the accumulation of both sea-based and land-based particles. Hence, this study provides novel insights into the potential risks posed by MP to the IO rim and associated marine ecosystem which will enhance our knowledge of the ecological implications and consequences of MP pollution, ultimately aiding in developing effective management and mitigation strategies.

Abstract:The escalating global microplastic (MP) pollution severely threatens marine life due to insufficient waste management and widespread single-use plastic. This study focuses on assessing MP contamination in commercial prawns from Gujarat State, India. Ten prawn species collected at five main fishing harbors revealed 590 MP particles in their gastrointestinal tracts, averaging 6.08 ± 5.96 MPs/g and 1.15 ± 0.78 MPs/individual. Significant variations in contamination levels were observed between species and study sites. Pollution indices indicated very high contamination throughout the study sites. Threads were the predominant shape, with blue and black as prevalent colors. Size-wise, 1–2 mm MPs dominated. Polymer analysis identified polyethylene terephthalate, polyurethane, polystyrene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. The findings provided crucial preliminary information for ecotoxicology and seafood safety investigations regarding MP contamination in commercially important prawns.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are one of the major substantial pollutants in the environment and are stored in sediments worldwide, especially in marine environments. This study shed light on the abundance, distribution, sources and chemical composition of MPs present in the surface sediments collected from the shelf part of the southeast coast of India, Bay of Bengal. A total of twenty-seven surface sediment samples were collected to study MPs pollution. The abundance and morphological characteristics of MPs were determined by counting using an Olympus SXZ7 stereo microscope. Raman spectroscopy analysis was used to identify the polymer type of the MPs. The average abundance of MPs in the study area is 460±275 MPs/kg in dry sediment. Regarding colour, transparent particles were predominant (46.42%), followed by blue, green, brown, etc. With respect to particle shape and size, fibres and 500-μm sized MPs are abundant. Polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polystyrene (PS) are the polymer types characterised in the study area. The higher abundance of MPs in the study area can be attenuated to human interruptions, viz., tourism, fishing and inappropriate sewage disposal in the marine environment. In addition to this, population density also plays an important role in providing MPs to the marine environment. This study provides the most valuable data to extrapolate the research for mitigating MP pollution in oceans. It also informs mankind about their disastrous activities on the marine environment, which is expected to recuperate quickly and negatively impact human health and the functionality of the marine system.

Abstract:Spatial and temporal distribution of microplastics (MPs) in the nearshore seafloor sediments along the Southwest coast of India and their patterns of accumulation in selected infaunal and epibenthic molluscs with diverse feeding strategies were investigated. Along the 300-km coastal stretch, which is one of the most productive and biodiversity rich regions of the eastern Arabian Sea, notable levels of MP contamination in both sediment (617.7 items/kg dry weight) and molluscs (5.39 items/g) was recorded. The concentration of MPs in sediments also varied seasonally, with a higher prevalence during the post-monsoon season. Among the four molluscan groups studied, the highest MP abundance was recorded among scavenging gastropod Pseudominolia biangulosa (9.13 items/g), followed by microcarnivore scaphopod Tesseracme quadrapicalis (5.96 items/g). In comparison, the suspension feeding bivalve, Anadara hankeyana and deposit feeding clam Jitlada philippinarum had lesser accumulation of MPs (2.98 items/g and 3.50 items/g respectively). The majority of MPs in sediments and within molluscs were less than 250 μm in size (89.14%) and were predominantly fibres and fragments. Chemical characterisation of MPs revealed eleven types of polymers dominated by polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). Present study identified positive correlations between ingested MP polymers and the feeding strategies of molluscs. Higher values for the ecological risk assessment indices (PHI, PLI and PERI) in most of the stations indicated the severity of plastic pollution in the region. Molluscs being a major contributor to the benthic food web is also a connecting link to higher trophic levels. Hence understanding the specificity in the MPs accumulation pattern within this group has far reaching significance in utilizing them as potential bioindicators for pollution studies in marine ecosystems.

Abstract:The Bay of Bengal (BoB) is home to a range of commercially important species with different food habits and feeding features. Microplastic (MP) contamination in the fish of BoB, like in many other marine environments, is a significant environmental concern. The study aimed to investigate the presence of microplastics (MPs) in the gastrointestinal tracts (GITs) of selected commercial marine fishes from the Bangladesh coast of the BoB. Six fish species ( Escualosa thoracata , Tenualosa ilisha , Johnius belangerii , Trichiurus lepturus , Planiliza parsia , and Mystus gulio ) were investigated ( n = 120) following hydrogen peroxide digestion, and floatation (saline solution) protocols. After analyses, a total number of 696 MPs (dimension 0.3 to 5 mm) were identified. Moreover, the highest occurrence of MPs in fish GITs was found in planktivorous fish (average of 7.7 items/individual), followed by omnivorous (average of 5.2 items/individual), and carnivorous fish (average of 4.6 items/individual) ( p < 0.001). However, planktivorous E. thoracata showed the highest number of MPs per g of GIT (average of 30.99 items/g GIT), whereas T. ilisha showed the lowest count (average of 0.77 items/g GIT). Different types of MPs (fibers (19 to 76%), fragments (6 to 61%), films (8 to 35%), microbeads (0 to 5%), and foams (0 to 2%)) were also observed. In terms of the color of MPs, the transparent, black, green, and blue types were the most common. Polymers were found as polyethylene (35 to 43%), polyethylene terephthalate (28 to 35%), polyamide (20 to 31%), and polystyrene (0 to 7%). The study provides a significant incidence of MPs in fish from the Bangladesh part of the BoB, which is very concerning. Therefore, long-term research is indispensable to ascertain the variables affecting the presence of MPs in fish, their origins, and their potential effects on the BoB fisheries. Stringent policies on plastic use and disposal should be strongly urged in this coastal region.

Abstract:The escalating issue of microplastic (MP) pollution poses a significant threat to the marine environment due to increasing plastic production and improper waste management. The current investigation was aimed at quantifying the MP concentration on 25 beaches on the Maharashtra coast, India. Beach sediments (1 kg) were collected from each site, with five replicates to evaluate the extent of MPs. The samples were homogenized, and three 20 g replicas were prepared for subsequent analysis. Later, the samples were sieved, and MPs were extracted using previously published protocols. The abundance of MPs found as 1.56 ± 0.79 MPs/g, ranges from 0.43 ± 0.07 to 3 ± 0.37 MPs/g. Fibers were found as the most abundant shape of MPs. Size-wise classification revealed dominance of <1 mm and 1-2 mm-sized MPs. Blue- and black-colored MPs were recorded dominantly. Polymer identification of MPs revealed polyurethane, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, acrylic or polymethyl methacrylate, and rubber. The findings revealed that MPs were found to be higher at highly impacted sites, followed by moderately impacted sites and low-impacted sites, possibly due to a different degree of anthropogenic pressure. The study recommended the urgent need for effective policy to prevent plastics accumulation in the coastal environment of Maharashtra State, India. PRACTITIONER POINTS: The study investigated the abundance and distribution of microplastics in the marine environment, specifically in sediments. The most common type of microplastic found was fibers, followed by fragments and films. Microplastics were found to pose a potential risk to the marine ecosystem, although further research is needed to fully understand their ecological impact. Future research should focus on expanding the sample size, assessing long-term effects, exploring sources and pathways, and considering size and shape of microplastics. The findings recommended urgent action to mitigate plastic pollution in Maharashtra coast.

Abstract:In the aquatic environment around the world, microplastic contamination has been a common and ongoing issue. Particularly, the ability of microplastics to absorb persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and then transmit these POPs to aquatic creatures has attracted a lot of interest. A stereomicroscope was used to detect the size, shape, and color of the microplastics (MPs), and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to identify the polymer composition of the MPs. To address MP transit, destiny, and mitigation, a study of MP pollution coastal areas is required. In the current study, MP pollution in the collected sample from upper layer of water and sediment of the Digha and Puri beaches along the coast of BOB was evaluated. The average concentration with SD of MPs observed in water was 5.3 ± 1.8 items/L whereas, in sediments, it was 173.4 ± 40.1 items/kg at Digha beach. The mean MPs abundance in the Puri beach was 6.4 ± 1.7 items/L in the water and 190.4 ± 28.0 items/kg in the sediments. The investigated total 16-PAHs concentrations were 164.7 ng/g, 121.9 ng/g, 73.6 ng/g, and 101.3 ng/g on the MPs surface of foam, fragment, fibers, and film respectively in the studied MPs sample. Smaller than 1000 μm size of MPs are distributed in the largest concentration. Fibers, films, fragments, and foam were the most common shapes of MPs. The molecular structure of MPs in water and sediment samples was analysed i.e., polyesters (PEs), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polystyrene (PS), polyamide (PA), polycarbonates (PC), and polyurethane (PU). The obtained result offers an accurate assessment of the PLI, and the investigated polymer facilitates determining the polymer hazard levels, which emphasizes the risk associated with it.

Abstract:The study aimed to assess and characterize microplastics (MPs) in muscles, guts, and gills of six commercially important marine fish from the Bay of Bengal. FTIR was utilized to identify MP's polymer compositions. A total 7085 MPs identified, where tuna exhibited the highest count and Bombay duck had the lowest. MPs abundance (MPs/g) was ranged from 1.56 ± 0.39 to 7.16 ± 1.36 in muscles, 1.91 ± 0.32 to 4.46 ± 0.75 in guts, and 2.36 ± 0.24 to 6.53 ± 1.58 in gills. The predominant MPs were 1-5 mm size (33.33-62.78 %), white/transparent color (18.45-54.63 %), filament shapes (75.00-94.71), and fiber types (73.21-94.71 %). FTIR revealed MPs 58.89 % polyethylene, 21.67 % polypropylene, 17.22 % polyester, and 2.22 % non-plastic compositions. Cluster analysis grouped two species with 50 % similarity, while PCA indicated significant variations among principal components (14-69.4 %) highlighting the dominance of fiber, particles, and 0.5-1.0 mm MPs in the fish tissues. The prevalence of MPs in seafood underscores measures to safeguard both the marine ecosystem and human health.
Pelagic microplastics in surface water of the Eastern Indian Ocean during monsoon transition period: Abundance, distribution, and characteristics

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) have been documented in almost all marine environments, including coastal regions, the open ocean, and the deep sea. However, relatively little knowledge was available about MP pollution in the open ocean, especially the Indian Ocean. We conducted field observations at 36 stations in the Eastern Indian Ocean (EIO), using a typical manta trawl with a mesh size of 330 μm for surface water sampling. Ours is the first study to obtained comprehensive and comparable baseline data about MPs in the EIO, including abundance, spatial distribution and characteristics. Abundance of MPs in the EIO varied from 0.01 items m−2 to 4.53 items m−2, with an average concentration of 0.34 ± 0.80 item m−2. The mean concentration of MPs in the Bay of Bengal (BoB) was 2.04 ± 2.26 items m−2 and 0.16 ± 0.17 items m−2 in the open ocean of the EIO. These results illustrate the high spatial heterogeneity of MPs distribution. Micro-FTIR analysis of polymer composition showed that the vast majority of MPs consisted of polypropylene (PP, 51.11%) and polyethylene (PE, 20.07%). Our data show that MP pollution in the EIO, whether in the epeiric sea or the open ocean, is among the highest of the world's oceans. The BoB is likely to become a MP hotspot due to the vast input of land-based plastics and the presence of multiscale recirculation gyres. These results are absolutely thought provoking: The EIO needs more attention on MPs.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are globally observed in marine as well as freshwater habitats, and laboratory studies have shown that marine organisms can accidentally ingest them. Monitoring the MP ingestion by fish in the environment is very crucial for understanding the risk of consuming MP-contaminated fish for human health. In this study, we investigated MP ingestion in 400 fish individuals from the Veraval Coast, in the state of Gujarat, India. There was 100% MP occurrence in the inedible tissues of fish, and 68% of the analyzed fishes presented MPs in edible tissues. The most dominant MPs based on their size in fishes were 0.05–0.1 mm. One hundred percent presence of only fibres in edible tissue was observed, while in inedible tissue, it was 77%, 20.42% and 2.58% of fibre, fragment and film respectively. The most common MP colour was blue. The predominant polymers were low-density polyethylene (LDPE) followed by polypropylene, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polystyrene. This is the first study performed on MPs in marine fishes from this region. Our findings suggest that the abundance of MPs observed in this area is higher than in other states of the country.

A baseline study of microplastic pollution in a Southern Indian Estuary

Abstract:Knowledge on the processes controlling the vertical distribution of microplastics (MPs) in estuaries is less. This research was carried out to determine the MP distribution in the surface, middle, and bottom layers of the Udyavara River Estuary in southwest India. The mean (± standard deviation) concentrations were 320.83 (± 98.30), 514.55 (± 352.16), and 755.03 (± 400.96) particles/m3, respectively. Fibres, films, and fragments dominated, and 57 % of the MPs had a size range of 0.3-1 mm, while 43 % had a size of 1-5 mm. The main polymers were high-density polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate. A positive correlation (r = 0.421, p = 0.0205, n = 30) exists between the MPs and salinity, suggesting that the MPs are held by dense saline waters. The mean pollution load index value was 2.25 indicating severe pollution. Microplastic pollution is due to harbour, fishing, industrial activities, the effects of southwest monsoon rain, and tidal currents.
Microplastics in seawater and zooplankton from the Yellow Sea.

Abstract:Marine plastic pollution is a worldwide problem. Microplastics (MPs) are the predominant form of marine plastic debris, a form small enough to be ingested by and potentially harm marine organisms. It is urgent to develop ecologically relevant metrics for the risk assessment of MPs based on in situ data, especially for coastal areas. For the first time, we performed a comprehensive study of the characteristics of MPs in seawater and zooplankton in the Yellow Sea. For MPs in seawater, the average concentration is 0.13 ± 0.20 pieces/m3, dominated by fragments (42%). The average size is 3.72 ± 4.70 mm, with the most frequent size appearing at 1200 μm. The major polymer types are polypropylene and polyethylene, accounting for 88.13% in total. The distribution of MPs in seawater is patchy, with high MP concentrations close to the coastal cities. The average concentration of MPs in 11 total zooplankton groups is 12.24 ± 25.70 pieces/m3. The average size is 154.62 ± 152.90 μm, with 90% being <500 μm. Fiber is the dominant shape of MPs found in zooplankton, accounting for 46%, but the composition of the polymer type is diverse. The retention of MPs in zooplankton depends on the taxa and their abundance in the Yellow Sea. Siphonophorea, Copepoda, Euphausiacea and Amphipoda are the main repositories compared to other groups, achieving 3.57, 2.44, 1.41 and 1.36 pieces/m3, respectively. The high concentration area of MPs in zooplankton appeared near the adjacent waters of the Yangtze estuary. These results prove that zooplankton act as a repository for MPs in coastal waters. The retention of MPs in zooplankton is recommended as a key index for further ecological risk assessment of MPs.
MicroRNA-26b Inhibits Hepatitis B Virus Transcription and Replication by Targeting the Host Factor CHORDC1 Protein*

Abstract:Background: Disordered miR-26b expression has been linked to the development of many diseases induced by hepatitis B virus (HBV). Results: miR-26b inhibits HBV replication, and HBV infection suppresses miR-26b expression. Conclusion: miR-26b acts as a host restriction factor to attenuate HBV transcription and replication. Significance: The functional interplay between HBV infection and miR-26b may influence the outcome of viral proliferation and virus-induced diseases. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) causes acute and chronic hepatitis in humans, and HBV infection is a major threat to global health. HBV replication is regulated by a series of host factors, including microRNAs (miRNAs), which are highly conserved small noncoding RNAs that participate in a variety of physiological and pathological processes. Here, we report that a chemically synthesized mimic of miR-26b inhibited HBV antigen expression, transcription, and replication, whereas antisense knockdown of endogenous miR-26b enhanced HBV replication in HepG2 cells. Overexpression and knockdown experiments showed that miR-26b significantly decreased HBV enhancer/promoter activities. We identified the cysteine- and histidine-rich domain containing 1 (CHORDC1) as a novel host factor target of miR-26b. CHORDC1 protein but not mRNA was markedly decreased by miR-26b overexpression via base-pairing with complementary sequences in the 3′UTR of its mRNA. Overexpression and knockdown studies showed that CHORDC1 increased viral antigen expression, transcription, and replication by elevating HBV enhancer/promoter activities. Conversely, HBV infection suppressed miR-26b expression and increased CHORDC1 protein levels in human liver cells. Another mature miRNA of the hsa-miR-26 family, miR-26a, had a similar function as miR-26b in targeting CHORDC1 and affecting HBV production. These results suggest that suppression of miR-26b expression up-regulates its target gene CHORDC1, which increases HBV enhancer/promoter activities and promotes viral transcription, gene expression, and replication. Our study could provide new insights into miRNA expression and the persistence of HBV infection.

Abstract:In the present study, the northwest coast of India, bordering the Arabian Sea, was selected to evaluate the microplastic (MP) abundance. This is the first study to emphasize the effects of different seasons on MP distribution. The collected MPs were dried, segregated, and evaluated based on their morphotype, size, color, and polymer type. A total of 1756.6, 7326.6, and 202 particles/kg of sand were estimated in the pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, respectively, with a dominance of polypropylene (PP) type of plastic in the pre-monsoon and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) in monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. HDPE and PP collected MPs during the monsoon season were further characterized for associated contaminants. Metal absorbance was detected using SEM-EDX mapping and ICP-MS. The presence of organic compounds (OCs) was analyzed using GC-MS. MPs exhibit distinct associations with metals, among which the HDPE pellet morphotype exhibits a higher range of metal adsorption. Total 61 different OCs were associated with MPs. The HDPE pellets contained the highest amounts of hydrophobic organic compounds. PP pellets were found to contain triglycerides, fatty aldehydes, and alkaloids, along with HOCs. Among morphotypes, pellet forms of MPs were found to adsorb more contaminants. These co-contaminants infiltrate the study area through sewage runoff and shoreline debris deposition, subsequently interacting with MPs. Furthermore, the MP diversity was studied by employing the MP diversity integrated index, which suggests that most of the MP diversity was observed in the pre-monsoon period. The pollution load index employed an MP risk assessment, which presented a low degree of MP contamination. In contrast, the polymer hazard index was calculated as 21650.3 in post-monsoon, placing the area under the extreme danger category. It is evident from the data that the types of MP is more important than their number. Thus, MP morphotypes have importance in the adsorption of co-contaminants.

Abstract:The study analysed microplastics (MPs) in surface waters along the north-east coast of India and focused on the spatiotemporal distribution and morphometric characteristics of 800 particles for environmental insights. The MPs were consistently present in all water masses, with an average abundance of 0.67 ± 0.66 particles/m3 during the monsoon and 0.12 ± 0.08 particles/m3 post-monsoon. Fragments and fibers were dominant in both seasons, comprising over 83 % and 12 %, respectively. In terms of colours, blue was significantly dominant during the post-monsoon (H, χ2 (5) = 15.38, p < 0.01); however, such variation was absent during the monsoon. Spatially, significant variance in abundance (F4, 34 = 8.542; p < 0.01) and across colours and forms during the monsoon was correlated with land-based inputs from the Hooghly River. FTIR analysis revealed ten polymer types, predominantly polyethylene (44 %). SEM observations indicated that 80 % of particles exhibited polymer ageing from oxidative weathering. The size distribution of MPs varied notably, with a higher proportion of < 0.3 mm (16.7 %) during the monsoon, possibly due to increased particle disintegration. The study noted MPs had low to moderate circularity, with increased irregularity during the monsoon due to heavy precipitation and river flushing. An initial risk assessment of MP pollution in surface waters on the north-east coast revealed a low-risk state. Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) was identified as the most hazardous MP polymer. A wide range of toxic trace elements were found in MPs in these waters. The findings from the study deepen our knowledge of MPs and their fate in the pelagic zone, which supports the development of science-based policies that effectively reduce MP pollution.

Abstract:Worldwide, environmental concerns about MPs pollution have increased. Microplastic contamination that pollutes the ocean is mostly caused by terrestrial transfer from close proximity locations. A study of MPs pollution near coastal locations becomes necessary to address the MPs transit, fate, and mitigation. In the current study MPs pollution in the surface water and sediment of the Mahanadi River estuary was assessed during Pre-MS and MS. The size, shape, and colour of the MPs were determined using a stereomicroscope, and the MPs polymer composition was identified by Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. The mean concentration of MPs that were potentially discovered in water was 16.6 ± 5.2 and sediments 197.3 ± 5.4 during Pre-MS. In the MS observed mean abundance of MPs was 15.1 ± 5.4 in water and 164.6 ± 76.9 in sediments. The highest abundant size was smaller than 1 mm; the most prevalent shape were fibers followed by film and fragments; black and white was a prominent colour in water and sediments respectively. Polyesters (PEs), polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP), polyamide (PA), Polystyrene (PS), and Polycarbonates (PC) were found in the analysis of the chemical composition of MPs in water and sediments samples. The calculated PLI value shows pollution load at category I, with polymer hazard levels at categories III, IV, and V, indicating very high risk. The current research results show that river inflows and fishing-related actions are probably the main causes of MPs pollution.

Abstract:Limited research has been conducted on microplastic (MP) contamination in the rivers of Goa. To address this gap, this study examines the levels of MP contamination in the surface water of the Zuari River, Goa. We investigate the abundance, characteristics (size, shape, colour, and polymer composition), and risk assessment of MPs. MPs were detected at all sampling stations in the Zuari River, with concentrations varying from 0.01 particles/L (S3) to 1.38 particles/L (S13). The average abundance of MPs in the water samples was 0.28 ± 0.35 particles/L. MPs were more common in the 0.3–1 mm size range (51.70%) than in the 1–5 mm range (48.30%). The most common MP shapes observed were fibers (37.88%) and fragments (29.66%). FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of polyethylene terephthalate, high-density polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyacrylamide carboxyl-modified MPs. The Pollution Load Index (PLI) showed an average value of 3.8, indicating significant contamination (PLI > 1). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed various degradation features such as pits, scratches, grooves, and cracks on the MPs surfaces, while energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) detected metals on the MP's surfaces. This study provides key insights into MP pollution in the Zuari River's surface water and lays the groundwork for future research and management strategies in the region.
