Abstract:Recent theoretical studies have predicted a new clustering mechanism for soft matter particles that interact via a certain kind of purely repulsive, bounded potentials. At sufficiently high densities, clusters of overlapping particles are formed in the fluid, which upon further compression crystallize into cubic lattices with density-independent lattice constants. In this work we show that amphiphilic dendrimers are suitable colloids for the experimental realization of this phenomenon. Thereby, we pave the way for the synthesis of such macromolecules, which form the basis for a novel class of materials with unusual properties.

Abstract:We synthesized ABC triblock rigid aromatic-flexible dendritic block molecules consisting of a docosyl chain, rigid aromatic segment, and poly(ethylene oxide) dendrimer. These block molecules were observed to exhibit an ordered structure in the solid state. Small-angle X-ray scattering experiments showed that the rigid-dendritic block molecule based on a more rodlike aromatic unit self-assembles into a 2-D hexagonal columnar structure, whereas the block molecule based on a more wedgelike aromatic unit self-assembles into a 3-D micellar cubic structure. Dynamic light scatterings, scanning electron microscopic (SEM) observations, and UV/vis spectroscopic measurements were carried out to investigate the encapsulation behavior of hydrophobic guests with the block molecules in an aqueous environment. The rigid-dendritic block molecules self-assemble into stable capsulelike micellar aggregates in aqueous solutions in the presence of CHCl3. In addition, the resulting micellar aggregates encapsulate hydrophobic dye molecules within their micellar core. The critical micellar concentration (cmc) values appeared to be very low, as compared to those of conventional surfactants. These results demonstrate that the introduction of a hydrophilic dendritic segment into an extended rigid aromatic segment can lead to a unique self-assembling system that shows aggregation behavior in both solid and dilute solution phases.
Adaptable Self‐Assembly of a PEG Dendrimer‐Coiled Coil Conjugate

Abstract:Self‐assembly of designed molecules has enabled the construction of a variety of functional nanostructures. Specifically, adaptable self‐assembly has demonstrated several advantageous features for smart materials. Here, we demonstrate that an α‐helical coiled coil conjugated with a dendrimer can adapt to spatial restriction due to the strong steric repulsion between dendrimer chains. The adaptable transformation of a tetrameric coiled coil to a trimeric coiled coil can be confirmed using analytical ultracentrifugation upon conjugation of the dendrimer to the coiled coil‐forming building block. Interestingly, circular dichroism spectroscopy analysis of the dendrimer conjugate revealed an unconventional trend: the multimerization of the coiled coil is inversely dependent on concentration. This result implies that the spatial crowding between the bulky dendritic chains is significantly stronger than that between linear chains, thereby affecting the overall assembly process. We further illustrated the application potential by decorating the surface of gold nanorods (AuNRs) with the adaptable coiled coil. The dendrimer‐coiled coil peptide conjugate can be utilized to fabricate organic‐inorganic nanohybrids with enhanced colloidal and thermal stabilities. This study demonstrates that the coiled coil can engage in the adaptable mode of self‐assembly with the potential to form dynamic peptide‐based materials.

Abstract:Three novel series of amphiphiles based on poly(amidoamine) dendrons (from G1 to G3) and having different aromatic chromophores (Cz I, Cz II, and Py) at the focal point were synthesized and studied for their self-assembly behavior in aqueous solution by using electronic microscopies (i.e., SEM and TEM), UV–vis, fluorescence, IR, and 1H NMR spectroscopy. It was found that the generation of dendrons affected significantly the self-assembly of these amphiphiles in aqueous solution and the morphological structures of the resulting assemblies depended greatly on the architecture of the focal chromophores. As a result, the first generation of dendrons assembled readily into vesicles at low concentrations. These vesicular structures subsequently fused to form a stable tubular structure. Similar tubular structures could also be directly obtained through self-assembly of these amphiphilic dendrons at high concentrations. X-ray investigations showed that the resulting tubules possessed a lamellar structure. A head-to-head packing model of amphiphilic dendrons in the assemblies was proposed.
Density Functional Study for Homodendrimers and Amphiphilic Dendrimers.

Abstract:The conformation of homodendrimers and amphiphilic dendrimers in various solvents is studied using classical density functional theory (DFT), in which the excluded volume effects are treated explicitly. For homodendrimers in an athermal solvent, DFT results predict a remarkable fold-back behavior for the outer generation of segments, supporting the dense-core model. A coil-to-globule transition is observed for homodendrimers in a poor solvent. The size of the dendrimers, characterized by the radius of gyration, < R-g >, is found to follow the scaling relationship, < R-d > similar to N-nu, where N is the total number of segments of the dendrimers. For amphiphilic dendrimers, DFT results show that chemical modification in the outermost generation is an effective method to drive the ends toward the periphery of the dendrimers. In particular, a conformation with a hollow interior structure could be formed for amphiphilic dendrimers with longer end spacers in a selective solvent. The resulting unimolecular micelles with a hollow core and dense shell could serve as a unique candidate for encapsulation applications, such as sustained-drug-release nano containers.

Abstract:We investigate the self-assembly and aggregation behaviors of nanoparticles in hybrid assemblies made from amphiphilic block copolymer tethered nanoparticles using the dissipative particle dynamics (DPD)) approach. By varying the arm number of the tethered amphiphilic block copolymers, hydrophobic block chain length, and interaction parameter between nanoparticle and hydrophobic block, different morphelogical hybrid aggregates are obtained, including branching rod-like micelles, ring-like disk-like micelles, and vesicles. Most importantly, the nanoparticles aggregate in the various micelles and form nanowires, nanorings, and nanoclusters. Only using amphiphilic block copolymer tethered nanoparticles, hybrid vesicles induding patchy vesicles-and heterogeneous vesicles are obtained. Moreover, nanodusters with distinct-number of nanoparticles in hybrid disk-like micelles and vesicles are fabricated through controlling the interaction parameter between nanoparticle and hydrophobic block.

Abstract:A new kind of amphiphilic DNA-aliphatic polyether dendron hybrids consisting of a flexible hydrophobic polyether dendron and a single stranded DNA are synthesized, which are characterized by MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy, HPLC and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). In aqueous solution, as DNA length shortens from 24 mer to 18 mer, to 12 mer, to 6 mer, the hydrophilic DNA content in the DNA-aliphatic polyether dendron hybrid decreases, the morphology of the aggregates change from spherical micelles to nanofibers, and to irregular clusters. These different assemblies from DNA-aliphatic polyether dendron hybrids in aqueous solution are depended on the hydrophobic/hydrophilic ratio between the polyether dendron skeleton and DNA strand. However, when adding 1/10 (VIV) organic solvents such as dichloromethane (DCM), diethyl ether (EtOEt) or tetrahydrofuran (THF) into aqueous solution and after the assembling process that the sample solution is heated to 90 degrees C for 30 min and subsequently cooled to room temperature overnight, the third generation dendron conjugated 18 mer DNA hybrid could assemble into nanofibers. Meanwhile, in the THF/H2O (1: 10, V/Y) mixed solvents, with the same assembling process, as different dendron generations (the second or third generation) and different DNA lengths (6 mer, 12 mer, 18 mer or 24 mer) in the hybrids, all these hybrids could assemble into long nanofibers. The assembled structures have been characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and fluorescent experiments. Subsequently, we verified the assembling mechanism that the spherical micelles and nanofibers contain a hydrophobic dendron core and a hydrophilic DNA shell by hydrophobic fluorescent molecule Nile Red encapsulation experiment and precise DNA hybridization to load gold nanoparticles at a size of 10 nm. The hybridization property of DNA at the shell associated with the encapsulation ability of dendron at the inner core indicated the potential application in gene or drug delivery and nanotechnology.

Solution Behavior of Dendrimer-Coated Rodlike Coordination Polymers

Abstract:We report here the synthesis and self-assembly behavior of a series of three coordination polymers (1-3) insulated with different generations and lengths of oligoether dendrons. Their self-assembly behavior in solutions was investigated according to the variation in generation of dendrons and solvent polarity by using spectroscopic measurements, molecular calculation, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In contrast. polymer 1 based on first-generation dendrons with diethylene oxide unit and polymers 2 and 3 based on higher volume fractions of dendrons are readily soluble in common organic solvents and H2O. Polymer 2 based on first-generation dendrons with triethylene oxide unit was observed to self-assemble into nanorods consisting of two pi-stacked polymer backbones in both nonpolar CHCl3 solvent and film, whereas 2 exists as isolated single polymer chains in polar solvents. Polymer 3 based on second-generation dendrons with tetraethylene oxide units also exists as isolated single polymer chains in both solution and film states. Notably, the CHCl3 solution of 2 at concentrations above 2 wt % was observed to be a nematic fluid, resulting from the formation of rigid polymer backbone driven by pi-stacking, whereas the THF Solution of 2 undergoes gelation at concentrations above 2 wt %. The primary driving force for this unique self-assembling behavior is proposed to be the solvation ability of solvent molecules to silver salts and the coverage ability of dendrons to insulate the conjugated backbones.

Abstract:Owing to the peculiarity of its molecular architecture, dendritic-linear copolymer consisting of Percec type dendron molecules and a relatively stiff poly{2,5-bis[(4'-methoxyphenyl) oxycarbonyl] styrene} (PMPCS) chain could self-assemble into hollow spherical particles in common solvent. This type of self-assembly offers a new convenient route for obtaining hollow vesicles in copolymer systems without secondary bonding. And vesicular structures and microspherical compound micelles can be obtained in selective solvents. Additionally, under moisture-rich conditions, solution-cast films of dendron-b-PMPCS can form well-defined honey-comb patterns.

Abstract:We report here the synthesis and self-assembly of a series of asymmetric, dumbbell-shaped rod amphiphiles containing hydrophilic oligoether dendrons at one end and hydrophobic alkyl dendrons at the other end of the stiff rod segment with systematic variation in the length of the hydrophobic alkyl chain ranging from ethyl to tetradecyl groups. These rod amphiphiles were observed to self-assemble, in aqueous solution, into nanoscopic supramolecular aggregates that change significantly on variation in the length of hydrophobic alkyl chain, as characterized by cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) experiments. The rod amphiphile based on the ethyl group (f(alkyl/EO) = 0.45) exhibits a spherical micellar structure, while the amphiphile with the hexyl group (f(alkyl/EO) = 0.71) shows a toroidal structure. Further increasing the alkyl length to decyl (f(alkyl/EO) = 0.97) and tetradecyl (f(alkyl/EO) = 1.23) gives rise to the formation of two-dimensional networks and vesicles, respectively. Remarkably, the toroidal structure showed to change into two-dimensional networks on heating in a reversible way due to a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior of the oligoether dendritic exterior. This structural change takes place directly without passing through any intermediate structures. The results described here demonstrate that systematic variation in the hydrophobic chain length of the rod amphiphiles can provide access to a wide variety of self-assembled nanostructures in aqueous solution. The primary driving force for this unique self-assembling behavior is proposed to be the energy balance between repulsive interactions of the hydrophilic oligoether dendrons and attractive hydrophobic interactions of the rod segments.

Abstract:In this paper, the dynamic assembly of toroidal micelle structures of amphiphilic triblock copolymers in dilute solution has been investigated using dissipative particle dynamics simulations. The amphiphilic molecule is represented by a coarse-grained model, which contains hydrophilic and hydrophobic particles. Some microstructures of complex morphology having toroidal micelles have been observed in the simulations; the toroidal micelle formation is in accordance with the theoretical prediction of the toroidal structure in cylindrical micelle suspensions by Pochan et al. (Science 2004, 306, 94). These findings are very interesting, and these complex morphologies enrich our knowledge of the potential products obtained from the self-assembly of block copolymers.

Abstract:Amphiphiles have long been attractive for their spontaneous formation of diverse structures and potential applications. Here, the self-assembly of binary mixtures with various hydrophilic/hydrophobic ratios is systematically investigated by dissipative particle dynamics simulations. On increasing the proportion of linear-dendritic copolymers, the self-assembled structure changes from a compound vesicle to a netlike micelle. Additionally, more structures including the high-genus vesicle, toroidal vesicle, oblate vesicle, and the perforated vesicle are obtained at different mixing ratios. The spontaneous curvature of self-assembling morphologies is the critical factor for shaping their final structures. Furthermore, stress is released as much as possible via the intelligent distribution of two amphiphiles, which makes the structures more stable than those obtained in pure amphiphile systems. Moreover, the slow release of the potential energy stored in the initially self-assembled components may induce the system into a metastable state and the self-assembly can be kinetically controlled by a pathway-directing process.

Abstract:We investigated the self-assembly of surfactant-like amphiphiles consisting of a hydrophilic head and a hydrophobic tail using the dissipative particle dynamics method. By controlling the interaction parameter between the hydrophilic head and the solvent, the length of the hydrophobic tail, the size of the hydrophilic head, and the polymer concentration, we found seven self-assembled morphologies, including spherelike micelles, pomegranate-like micelles, hierarchical colloidal polymeric (HCP) structures, pomegranate-like columnar structures, branched hybrid structures, disklike micelles, and vesicles. Importantly, the HCP structure widely existing in this system has a regular two-component alternating structure and prospective application in soft-matter nanotechnology. The formation process and the structural properties of the HCP structure are intensively studied. The dimension of the HCP structure is largely controlled by the hydrophobic tail and the polymer concentration.

Abstract:Dendritic amphiphiles are a promising class of topological blocks for self‐assembly to construct chiral supramolecular aggregates in aqueous media. Their unique dendritic geometry, structure variability and multivalence can mediate the assemblies with versatile morphologies and functions. The bulky dendritic moieties also enable the appropriate association‐repulsion balance to control supramolecular growth, and simultaneously shield the assemblies with enhanced stabilities. Moreover, the crowded packing of dendritic segments facilitates the efficient chirality transfer from molecular level to supramolecular level, to achieve chirality amplification or enhancement. Dendritic moieties also provide chances to stabilize the assemblies in aqueous media through shielding and cooperative effects. The dendritic assemblies can be intriguingly made responsive to external stimuli including temperature, light, solvents or guests to switch their nanostructures or supramolecular chirality. Various dendritic amphiphiles bearing peptide or aromatic motifs have been reported in supramolecular chiral assembly, and their functional applications investigated. This review summarizes the significant progresses with a particular focus on the dendritic structural effects on supramolecular chiral assembly and the stimuli‐responsiveness in aqueous media.

Abstract:We have synthesized an amphiphilic triblock coil−rod−coil molecule consisting of a rigid aromatic building block and poly(ethylene oxide). The coil−rod−coil molecule was observed to assemble into a cylindrical micelle structure in aqueous solution. Notably, addition of a small amount of a rod−coil−rod molecule into the cylindrical micellar solution can induce the anisotropic gelation due to dynamic interconnection of adjacent cylindrical micelles via hydrophobic and π−π interactions. Depending on the concentration of the rod−coil−rod molecule, the nematic gel can be reversibly switched into an isotropic solution of cylindrical micelles.
