Abstract:We have synthesized an amphiphilic rigid-flexible macrocycle (fcoil = 0.68) consisting of hexa-p-phenylene and aliphatic polyether chain. The macrocyclic molecule in bulk state self-organizes into a 2-D body-centered rectangular structure (a = 4.3 nm and b = 6.3 nm). In aqueous solution, the macrocycle self-assembles into well-defined ribbonlike aggregates with a rod tilt relative to the ribbon normal at the initial stage. These elementary fibrils are further coiled to form a tubular structure consisting of coiled ribbons with a uniform diameter of about 20 nm and a regular pitch of 4.7 nm, as confirmed by TEM experiments. The internal diameter and the wall thickness of the nanotube are measured to be 14 and 3 nm, respectively.

Abstract:Traditional aqueous self-assembly of tubular structures (as well as other aggregates) usually relies on the hydrophobic effect, a relatively weak and nondirectional interaction. The resultant aggregates are inherently soft, fluid, and less-ordered. Alternatively, we report a novel kind of nonamphiphilic self-assembly of microtubes in aqueous solutions of cyclodextrin/ionic surfactant (CD/IS) complexes. This self-assembly is driven exclusively by H-bonds, relatively strong, directional interactions. The CD/IS microtubes feature an unbundling nature, ultralong persistence lengths, highly monodispersed diameters, and remarkable rigidity. Every single CD/IS microtube is constituted by a set of coaxial, equally spaced, hollow cylinders, resembling the annular rings of trees (thus termed as “annular ring” microtubes). Furthermore, bearing in mind the fundamental difference between the amphiphilic counterpart in driving forces, this H-bond-driven hydrophilic self-assembly is envisioned to complement its counterpart and expand the field of molecular self-assembly.

Abstract:Precise control of supramolecular objects requires the rational design of molecular components, because the information determining their specific assembly should be encoded in their molecular architecture 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 . In this context, diverse self-assembling molecules including liquid crystals 5 , dendrimers 6 , block copolymers 7 , hydrogen-bonded complexes 8 and rigid macrocycles 9 are being created as a means of manipulating supramolecular structure. Incorporation of a stiff rod-like building block into an amphiphilic molecular architecture leads to another class of self-assembling molecules 10 . Aggregation of rod building blocks can generate various nanoscale objects including bundles 11 , 12 , ribbons 13 , tubules 14 , 15 and vesicles 16 , depending on the molecular structure and/or the presence of a selective solvent. We present here an unusual example of supramolecular barrels in the solid and in aqueous solution, based on the self-assembly of amphiphilic rigid–flexible macrocycles driven by non-covalent interactions. Preliminary experiments show that these amphiphilic macrocycles are membrane-active. The amphiphilic macrocycles might thus lead to an excellent model system for exploring biological processes in supramolecular materials.
Synthesis and Supramolecular Nanostructure of Amphiphilic Rigid Aromatic-Flexible Dendritic Block Molecules

Abstract:We synthesized ABC triblock rigid aromatic-flexible dendritic block molecules consisting of a docosyl chain, rigid aromatic segment, and poly(ethylene oxide) dendrimer. These block molecules were observed to exhibit an ordered structure in the solid state. Small-angle X-ray scattering experiments showed that the rigid-dendritic block molecule based on a more rodlike aromatic unit self-assembles into a 2-D hexagonal columnar structure, whereas the block molecule based on a more wedgelike aromatic unit self-assembles into a 3-D micellar cubic structure. Dynamic light scatterings, scanning electron microscopic (SEM) observations, and UV/vis spectroscopic measurements were carried out to investigate the encapsulation behavior of hydrophobic guests with the block molecules in an aqueous environment. The rigid-dendritic block molecules self-assemble into stable capsulelike micellar aggregates in aqueous solutions in the presence of CHCl3. In addition, the resulting micellar aggregates encapsulate hydrophobic dye molecules within their micellar core. The critical micellar concentration (cmc) values appeared to be very low, as compared to those of conventional surfactants. These results demonstrate that the introduction of a hydrophilic dendritic segment into an extended rigid aromatic segment can lead to a unique self-assembling system that shows aggregation behavior in both solid and dilute solution phases.

Abstract:A triblock amphiphilic macrocycle consisting of a macrocyclic aromatic segment, a hydrophilic oligo(ethylene oxide) branch, and a hydrophobic alkyl dendron is successfully synthesized and characterized. The resulting cyclic amphiphile is observed to self-assemble into hollow double-layered capsules in aqueous solution, as confirmed by dynamic light scattering and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy investigations. The capsules are able to encapsulate hydrophobic guest molecules through aromatic interactions with high stability.

Abstract:Three novel series of amphiphiles based on poly(amidoamine) dendrons (from G1 to G3) and having different aromatic chromophores (Cz I, Cz II, and Py) at the focal point were synthesized and studied for their self-assembly behavior in aqueous solution by using electronic microscopies (i.e., SEM and TEM), UV–vis, fluorescence, IR, and 1H NMR spectroscopy. It was found that the generation of dendrons affected significantly the self-assembly of these amphiphiles in aqueous solution and the morphological structures of the resulting assemblies depended greatly on the architecture of the focal chromophores. As a result, the first generation of dendrons assembled readily into vesicles at low concentrations. These vesicular structures subsequently fused to form a stable tubular structure. Similar tubular structures could also be directly obtained through self-assembly of these amphiphilic dendrons at high concentrations. X-ray investigations showed that the resulting tubules possessed a lamellar structure. A head-to-head packing model of amphiphilic dendrons in the assemblies was proposed.

Abstract:Despite recent advances in synthetic nanometer-scale tubular assembly, conferral of dynamic response characteristics to the tubules remains a challenge. Here, we report on supramolecular nanotubules that undergo a reversible contraction-expansion motion accompanied by an inversion of helical chirality. Bent-shaped aromatic amphiphiles self-assemble into hexameric macrocycles in aqueous solution, forming chiral tubules by spontaneous one-dimensional stacking with a mutual rotation in the same direction. The adjacent aromatic segments within the hexameric macrocycles reversibly slide along one another in response to external triggers, resulting in pulsating motions of the tubules accompanied by a chiral inversion. The aromatic interior of the self-assembled tubules encapsulates hydrophobic guests such as carbon-60 (C(60)). Using a thermal trigger, we could regulate the C(60)-C(60) interactions through the pulsating motion of the tubules.

Abstract:Dumbbell-shaped aromatic amphiphilic molecules consisting of a dodeca-p-phenylene as a rigid segment and oligoether dendrons as a flexible chains were synthesized, characterized, and their aggregation behavior was investigated in the bulk and at the air-water interface. In contrast to the molecule 2 which shows a nematic liquid crystalline state, molecule I based on shorter dendritic chains was observed to self-assemble into a 3-D primitive orthorhombic supercrystal. And molecule 1 at the air-water interface was observed to reorganize from circular plates to ring structures by lateral compressions.
Adaptable Self‐Assembly of a PEG Dendrimer‐Coiled Coil Conjugate

Abstract:Self‐assembly of designed molecules has enabled the construction of a variety of functional nanostructures. Specifically, adaptable self‐assembly has demonstrated several advantageous features for smart materials. Here, we demonstrate that an α‐helical coiled coil conjugated with a dendrimer can adapt to spatial restriction due to the strong steric repulsion between dendrimer chains. The adaptable transformation of a tetrameric coiled coil to a trimeric coiled coil can be confirmed using analytical ultracentrifugation upon conjugation of the dendrimer to the coiled coil‐forming building block. Interestingly, circular dichroism spectroscopy analysis of the dendrimer conjugate revealed an unconventional trend: the multimerization of the coiled coil is inversely dependent on concentration. This result implies that the spatial crowding between the bulky dendritic chains is significantly stronger than that between linear chains, thereby affecting the overall assembly process. We further illustrated the application potential by decorating the surface of gold nanorods (AuNRs) with the adaptable coiled coil. The dendrimer‐coiled coil peptide conjugate can be utilized to fabricate organic‐inorganic nanohybrids with enhanced colloidal and thermal stabilities. This study demonstrates that the coiled coil can engage in the adaptable mode of self‐assembly with the potential to form dynamic peptide‐based materials.

Abstract:Amphiphilic rigid backbone polymers are traditionally seemed as one-dimensional (1D) rods and show distinct self-assembly behavior to flexible polymers, but they could hardly adapt morphology-tunable self-assembly by changing their holistic conformation upon external stimuli. In this study, we synthesized a series of amphiphilic homopolymers poly(acetylene azobenzene oligoethylene glycol) (P(AAzo-EG x )) containing conjugated polyacetylene mainchain, azobenzene pendants and oligo ethylene glycol tails in each unit. This comb-like amphiphilic polymer could be treated as two-dimensional (2D) nanoribbons with tunable holistic conformation via meticulous tailoring intrastrand repulsion and interchain π-π interaction of azobenzene pendants by light, temperature, and solvent swelling. P(AAzo-EG 2 ) could self-assemble into large vesicles in ambient, whereas transformed to supramolecular helix bundles (SHBs) at 65 °C as well as depicted by dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulation, and then turned into grass leaf-like micelles upon sequential ultraviolet (UV) and blue light irradiation. The three assemblies featured different stacking mode of PAAzo skeletons although showed similar aggregate induce emission (AIE) effect. In this holistic macromolecular chain conformation-induced self-assembly and morphology transformation, temperature influenced the stacking of hydrophobic parts mainly by tuning the torsion of PAAzo skeleton. Certain amount of good solvent played a vital role by swelling of hydrophobic PAAzo skeleton, and helping the movement and rearrangement of azobenzene pendants and polyacetylene mainchains like a lubricant. The length and diameter of SHBs could be tuned by changing EG x tails. This work uncovered a facile strategy to tailor the self-assembly of rigid backbone polymers for fabrication of functional nanodevices.

Abstract:We report the pH-driven formation of a dynamic 2-D porous hetero-structure through assembly-disassembly switching of the stacked macrocycles of nanotubules and their subsequent spreading on the surfaces of a self-sorted sheet assembly in a hierarchical co-assembly. The 2-D ordered porous heterostructure is able to discriminate spherical C-60 from flat coronene through shape selective adsorption.
Controlled Self-Assembly of Asymmetric Dumbbell-Shaped Rod Amphiphiles: Transition from Toroids to Planar Nets

Abstract:We report here the synthesis and self-assembly of a series of asymmetric, dumbbell-shaped rod amphiphiles containing hydrophilic oligoether dendrons at one end and hydrophobic alkyl dendrons at the other end of the stiff rod segment with systematic variation in the length of the hydrophobic alkyl chain ranging from ethyl to tetradecyl groups. These rod amphiphiles were observed to self-assemble, in aqueous solution, into nanoscopic supramolecular aggregates that change significantly on variation in the length of hydrophobic alkyl chain, as characterized by cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) experiments. The rod amphiphile based on the ethyl group (f(alkyl/EO) = 0.45) exhibits a spherical micellar structure, while the amphiphile with the hexyl group (f(alkyl/EO) = 0.71) shows a toroidal structure. Further increasing the alkyl length to decyl (f(alkyl/EO) = 0.97) and tetradecyl (f(alkyl/EO) = 1.23) gives rise to the formation of two-dimensional networks and vesicles, respectively. Remarkably, the toroidal structure showed to change into two-dimensional networks on heating in a reversible way due to a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior of the oligoether dendritic exterior. This structural change takes place directly without passing through any intermediate structures. The results described here demonstrate that systematic variation in the hydrophobic chain length of the rod amphiphiles can provide access to a wide variety of self-assembled nanostructures in aqueous solution. The primary driving force for this unique self-assembling behavior is proposed to be the energy balance between repulsive interactions of the hydrophilic oligoether dendrons and attractive hydrophobic interactions of the rod segments.

Abstract:We have synthesized an amphiphilic dumbbell-shaped molecule consisting of dodeca-p-phenylene and aliphatic polyether dendrons as flexible end groups. The molecular dumbbell in aqueous solution self-assembles into well-defined left-handed helical cylinders with a diameter (8 nm) of a molecular length scale and a pitch length of 5.6 nm, as confirmed by TEM. These elementary helical fibrils are further assembled to give left-handed superhelical fibers with lengths up to several micrometers. Such a well-defined helical arrangement of conjugated rod building blocks may provide a new strategy for the design of one-dimensional nanostructured materials with biomimetic, electronic, and photonic functions.

Abstract:A novel class of nonamphiphilic aromatic amides (T1–T3) have been designed and synthesized from naphthalene-2,7-diamine or 2-amino-naphthalene and a 5-hydroxy-isophthalic acid segment, which is revealed to selectively assemble into vesicular or tubular architectures, depending on the solvents and concentrations. T1 and T2 form vesicles in methanol, but can be converted into micro/nano-tubes when water is added and further gelate the binary solvent when the concentration is high enough. In contrast, T3 self-assembles into fine tubular structures in methanol, but can be transformed into vesicles upon being diluted or adding chloroform. The morphology transition has been investigated by SEM, AFM, TEM and fluorescent microscopy, which also reveal that microtubes of large size are formed through the fusion of vesicles of small size, which is driven by the cooperative hydrogen bonding and aromatic stacking interactions, as evidenced by the X-ray investigation on an analogue of T3. The novel organic micro/nano-tubes and vesicles are further used to template the fabrication of Pt micro/nano-tubes or hollow Pt spheres by in situ reduction of the absorbed K2PtCl4 with ascorbic acid, as confirmed by SEM, TEM and EDX analyses.

Abstract:Amphiphilic molecules have long been regarded as an important class of supramolecular building blocks for the fabrication of nanomaterials. While most previous researches have mainly focused on amphiphlies with flexible structures, in this work, four novel amphiphiles possessing wholly-rigid skeletons have been designed and synthesized. These molecules were built by using 4,4'-bipyridin-1-ium or viologen as hydrophilic moieties and phenyl or biphenyl as hydrophobic segments, bridged by a pyridazine unit. Their self-assembly behavior has been investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which revealed they could self-assemble into well-ordered nanoarchitectures with various morphologies such as vesicles, micro/nanorods and nanotubes in water or methanol, depending on their hydrophilic/hydrophobic fraction ratios.
Tunable Columnar Organization by Twisted Stacking of End-Capped Aromatic Rods

Abstract:The dumbbell-shaped aromatic amphiphilic molecules consisting of hexa-p-phenylene-conjugated carbazole moieties on both ends as a rigid rod segment and oligoether chains with different cross-sections (i.e., linear branch (1), dibranch (2), and tetrabranch (3)) attached to a carbazole as flexible chains were synthesized and their self-assembling behavior investigated using DSC, X-ray scatterings, and TEM. These dumbbell-shaped molecules based on an end-capped rod segment self-assemble into a tunable 21) supramolecular structure depending on cross-sectional area of the flexible dendritic chain. With increasing cross-sectional area of the flexible chains, the 21) structure changes from rectangular to oblique columnar structures with a successive increase in the lattice constant a relative to b. This structural change is also accompanied by increasing temperature as in the case of 2 and 3. The molecular rearrangements at the phase transitions were proposed to undergo a scissoring motion of the two adjacent rods along the column axis. Considering that all other self-assembling systems based on rigid rod segments have a strong tendency to be aligned parallel to each other, the remarkable feature of the end-capped rod segment investigated in this study is the ability to control 2D supramolecular structure through a unique scissoring motion between the two adjacent stacked rods.
Self-Assembly of Achiral Shape Amphiphiles into Multi-Walled Nanotubes Via Helicity-Selective Nucleation and Growth.

Abstract:Soft nanotubes are normally constructed from chiral amphiphiles through helical self-assembly. Yet, how to self-assemble achiral molecules into nanotubes is still a challenge. Here, we report the nanotube construction with achiral shape amphiphiles through helical self-assembly and also unravel the formation mechanisms. The amphiphiles have a dumbbell shape and are composed by covalently linking three achiral moieties together: two unlike clusters and an organic tether. The difference in polarity between the unlike clusters drives the amphiphiles to self-assemble into single- and multi-walled nanotubes as well as intermediates. Analysis of the key intermediates unravels the self-assembly mechanism of helicity-selective nucleation and growth. Meanwhile, direct visualization of the individual clusters in the ribbons displays a two-dimensional deformed hexagonal lattice. Thus, we speculate that it is the lattice deformation that creates anisotropic tension along different directions of the ribbon which further results in the formation of helical ribbons towards nanotubes by amphiphiles.

Abstract:Mixed molecular species of cardanyl glucoside derived from renewable resources provide nanotubes upon self-assembly in water, while the saturated homologue generated a twisted fibrous morphology. The cardanyl glucoside mixture was fractionated into four individual components in order to study their contribution to the nanotube formation. The rational control of self-assembled helical morphologies was achieved by binary self-assembling of the saturated and monoene derivatives. This method can generate a diversity of self-assembled high-axial-ratio nanostructures (HARNs), ranging from twisted ribbons and helical ribbons to nanotubes.
