Abstract:The urgent demands for more excellent mechanical properties to meet higher steam temperatures for 9Cr steels have been the driving force behind the increasing research efforts on heat treatment. This paper presents a systematic study of the effect of the ultra-fine martensite (ultra-fine M) and retained austensite (RA) obtained by austempering process on mechanical properties are studied by experimental observations and phase-field simulation. The results demonstrate that austempering leads to the split and incompletion of martensitic transition, producing a mixed microstructure consisting of lathy martensite(lathy-M), ultrafine martensite(ultra-M), and retained austensite (RA). Due to the change of local chemical free energy and elastic strain energy caused by the redistribution of C element, two types (isothermal and athermal) of ultra-M form by spontaneous nucleation and interfacial migration during austempering with appropriate temperatures. Further tempering produces dispersed finer M 23 C 6 precipitated at the interfaces of high-dislocated ultra-M than lathy-M. Meanwhile, RA decomposes into fine globular M 23 C 6 and ferrite. Consequently, a larger amount of ultra-M and RA in quenched state results in smaller effective grain sizes and smaller carbides' average size, leading to the enhancement of precipitation strengthening, grain boundary strengthening, and impact toughness. This work establishes the potential for tailoring the strength and impact toughness of 9Cr1.5Mo1Co steel by optimizing the ultra-fine martensite and retained austensite using austempering process.

Abstract:Two kinds of experimental ferritic/martensitic steels (HT-9) with different Si contents were designed for the fourth-generation advanced nuclear reactor cladding material. The effects of Si content and tempering temperature on microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of these HT-9 steel were studied. The microstructure of experimental steels after quenching and tempering were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM); the mechanical properties were investigated by means of tensile test, Charpy impact test, and hardness test. The microscopic mechanism of how the microstructural evolution influences mechanical properties was also discussed. Both XRD and TEM results showed that no residual austenite was detected after heat treatment. The results of mechanical tests showed that the yield strength, tensile strength, and plasticity of the experimental steels with 0.42% (% in mass) Si are higher than that with 0.19% Si, whereas hardness and toughness did not change much; when tempered at 760 degrees C, the strength and hardness of the experimental steels decreased slightly compared with those tempered at 710 degrees C, whereas plasticity and toughness increased. Further analysis showed that after quenching at 1050 degrees C for 1 h and tempering at 760 degrees C for 1.5 h, the comprehensive mechanical properties of the 0.42% Si experimental steel are the best compared with other experimental steels.

Abstract:A new processing route of thermo-mechanical processing (TMCP) followed by inter-critical quenching and tempering (L-T) was developed to produce 590MPa grade high strength plates based on a relatively lean composition of plain carbon manganese steels microalloyed with Nb, V and Ti. The effect of quenching temperatures on the evolution of microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. The nano-hardness measurements of martensite were performed with a nano-indenter, which indicated that the fractions of as quenched and tempered martensite increased and their hardness values decreased with increasing quenching temperatures in the range from 760 degrees C to 810 degrees C. For both as quenched and tempered samples, ferrite grain sizes decreased with increasing quenching temperature in almost linear relationships. The yield strength increased with increasing the fraction of martensite while the tensile strength remained almost unchanged, leading to the increase of yielding ratio with increasing quenching temperatures. The optimum quenching temperature was determined to be around 760 degrees C in terms of strengths and yield ratio.
Thermo-Mechanical Processing as Method Decreasing Delta-Ferrite and Improving the Impact Toughness of the Novel 12% Cr Steels with Low N and High B Contents

Abstract:The universal thermo-mechanical processing including the interim long-term annealing together with forging for three 12% Cr martensitic steels with different alloying. This thermo-mechanical processing remarkably increases the impact toughness of these steels in wide temperature ranges and reduces the ductile-brittle transition temperature by 10-20 K. There is a 25 °C impact toughness of all 12% Cr steels subjected to the thermo-mechanical processing exceeds 60 J cm-2. Such an increment in impact toughness is accompanied with the significant changes in the structures of all 12% Cr steels with different alloying. The common feature for all 12% Cr steels subjected to the thermo-mechanical processing is found to be a noticeable decrease in delta-ferrite amount. In the steels containing Ta, the decrease in the mean size of prior austenite grains by 20-26% was revealed. For the 12% Cr steels with ultra-low N content, the thermo-mechanical processing provides the changes in the dispersion of M23C6 carbides and MX carbonitrides.
Effect of Hot-Rolling on the Microstructure and Impact Toughness of an Advanced 9%Cr Steel

Abstract:A 9%Cr martensitic steel with Ta and B additions was subjected to thermo-mechanical treatment (TMT) including rolling in the range of metastable austenite at 900–700 °C followed by water quenching and tempering at different temperatures. Applied TMT with tempering at T ≥ 700 °C substantially improved the impact toughness. The application of the TMT with subsequent tempering at 780 °C decreased the ductile–brittle transition temperature from 40 to 15 °C and increased the upper shelf energy from 300 to 380 J/cm2 as compared to the normalized and tempered (NT) condition. The microstructural observations with scanning and transmission electron microscopes showed the precipitation of fine Ta-rich MX carbonitride and M23C6 carbide during TMT and subsequent tempering. The analysis of the cleavage facets and the secondary cracks with electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) revealed that the brittle fracture occurred via cleavage cracking along {100} planes across the laths, while the high-angle boundaries of martensite blocks and packets were effective barriers to the crack propagation. The increased impact toughness of the tempered TMT steel sample was attributed to enhanced ductile fracture owing to the uniform dispersion of the precipitates and favorable {332}⟨113⟩ crystallographic texture.

Abstract:Advanced high strength steels (AHSSs) are regarded as the most promising materials for vehicles in the 21st century. AHSSs are complex and sophisticated materials, with microstructures being controlled by precise thermomechanical processing (TMP) technologies. TMP is an established and strategic method for improving the mechanical properties of AHSSs through control of microstructures and is among the most important industrial technologies for producing high quality AHSSs with the necessary mechanical properties. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of recent progress in TMP of AHSSs, with focus on the processing-microstructure-property relationships of the processed AHSSs. We first present an introduction to the background of the TMP of AHSSs. Then, the recent progress and the latest achievements in TMP of the first, second and third generations of AHSSs and Nano Hiten steels are reviewed in detail, and the mechanisms of the TMP-induced microstructural evolution and mechanical properties variation are addressed and discussed. The present review concludes with a on the TMP of AHSSs currently under development, and also offers an outlook of the future opportunities which will inspire more in-depth research and eventually advance practical applications of this innovative field.

Abstract:The effect of high-temperature thermomechanical treatment (HTMT) with plastic deformation by rolling in austenitic region on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 12% chromium ferritic-martensitic steel EP-823 is investigated. The features of the grain and defect microstructure of steel are studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy with Electron Back-Scatter Diffraction (SEM EBSD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). It is shown that HTMT leads to the formation of pancake structure with grains extended in the rolling direction and flattened in the rolling plane. The average sizes of martensitic packets and ferrite grains are approximately 1.5–2 times smaller compared to the corresponding values after traditional heat treatment (THT, which consists of normalization and tempering). The maximum grain size in the section parallel to the rolling plane increases up to more than 80 μm. HTMT leads to the formation of new sub-boundaries and a higher dislocation density. The fraction of low-angle misorientation boundaries reaches up to ≈68%, which exceeds the corresponding value after HTMT (55%). HTMT does not practically affect the carbide subsystem of steel. The mechanical properties are investigated by tensile tests in the temperature range 20–700 °C. It is shown that the values of the yield strength in this temperature range after HTMT increase relative to the corresponding values after THT. As a result of HTMT, the elongation decreases. A significant decrease is observed in the area of dynamic strain aging (DSA). The mechanisms of plastic deformation and strengthening of ferritic-martensitic steel under the high-temperature thermomechanical treatments are also discussed.

Abstract:A 12% Cr ferritic/martensitic steel, HT-9, has been used as a primary core material for nuclear reactors. The microstructure and mechanical properties of gas tungsten arc butt welded joints of HT-9 in as-welded, and as-tempered conditions have been explored. In as-welded condition, the fusion zone (FZ) contained a fresh martensite matrix with delta (δ)-ferrite. The δ-ferrite was rich in Cr and depleted in C compared with the matrix. The heat-affected zone (HAZ) could be divided into three areas as the distance from the fusion line increased: δ-ferrite/martensite duplex zone, fully recrystallized zone, and partly recrystallized zone. Prior austenitic grains did not coarsen in the δ-ferrite/martensite duplex zone due to the newly nucleated δ-ferrite grains and incompletely ferritizing (δ-ferrite) during the welding thermal cycle. The weldment microhardness distributed heterogeneously with values above 600 HV1.0 in the HAZ and FZ and 250 HV1.0 in the base metal (BM). Solute C in the matrix, induced by the dissolution of carbide during the welding process, dominated the microhardness variation. Low toughness was observed in the FZ with a quasi-cleavage fracture tested from − 80 to 20 °C. The tensile fracture occurred in the relatively soft BM tested from 20 to 600 °C. In as-tempered condition (760 °C for 1 h), M23C6-type carbides precipitated within the martensitic laths, the lath boundaries, and the δ-ferrite/martensite interfaces. Moreover, V, Cr, Mo-rich nitrides with very small size also precipitated in the δ-ferrite/martensite interface. The tempering treatment improved the homogenous distribution of weldment hardness significantly. Tensile fracture still occurred in the BM of the weldment specimens tested from 20 to 600 °C. The impact toughness improved significantly, but the ductile–brittle transaction temperature was − 12 °C which was higher than that of the normalized and tempered (N&T) BM. δ-ferrite was considered to be one of the major factors aggravating the impact toughness in the FZ.

Abstract:The deterioration of mechanical behaviour of high strength steel (HSS) under elevated temperatures and post-fire condition would lead to reduction of load bearing capacity. To find out the effect of work temperature, welding heat input and cooling rate on the mechanical behaviour of thermal-mechanical control process (TMCP) HSS, a comprehensive experimental investigation on mechanical properties of Q690CFD at ambient and elevated temperatures and post-fire condition was organized in this study. Two types of studied objectives (basic material and welded specimens) were included. For ambient and elevated temperature condition, the elastic modulus, yield and ultimate strength were tested from different work temperatures and different welding heat inputs. For post-fire condition, the residual elastic modulus, residual yield and ultimate strength were tested under different heat inputs and cooling rates. The reduction factors of those mechanical properties were investigated. Finally, a series of predictive equation, which can be used to evaluate the ambient and elevated temperatures and post-fire performance of TMCP HSS, were proposed. The effects of welding heat input and cooling rate were incorporated in the proposed design equations.

Abstract:The thermo-mechanical controlled processing (TMCP) with accelerated cooling (ACC) has been used to manufacture steel plates with high yield strength and high impact toughness with the following chemistry: 0.08% C; 1.56% Mn; 0.043% Nb; 0.016% Ti; 0.17% Cr. Innovative TMCP regimes were employed with minimum amounts of micro-alloying elements. viz., Nb and Ti to enhance yield strength with high impact toughness. The phenomenon of precipitation hardening and grain refinement was used to improve yield strength and high Charpy Impact energy with enhancement of toughness values. High yield strength (510–550 MPa) and Charpy Impact energy for toughness (189–230 J at 0 °C and 185–226 J at −20 °C) were obtained. It was noted that high cumulative reductions in last three finishing passes (≥ 65%) played a critical role in a further increase in yield strength and Charpy Impact energy (248–262 at 0 °C, 242–254 at − 20 °C). The grain refinement of ferrite, as revealed in optical micrographs, due to very high reduction in finishing passes particularly at low finishing temperature, was favourable for additional improvement in yield strength and toughness values. EBSD maps showed more prominently that plates having more than 65% cumulative reductions in last three finishing passes developed deformation induced ferrite.

Abstract:Influence of holding time and tempering time in the direct inter-critical quenching and tempering(DLT) process on microstructure and properties of 9Ni steel was investigated.The results show that under the same tempering conditions,the highest cryogenic toughness is obtained when holding time in inter-critical region is 40 min,which is less than the optimal holding time for QLT process.Higher strength and lower cryogenic toughness are achieved when the holding time is 20 min,and the lowest cryogenic toughness is obtained when holding time is 60 min and remained almost unchange as tempering time increased due to the coarsened microstructure obtained during the long holding time.For the specimens after holding at inter-critical region for 40 min,more reversed austensite is obtained with increasing tempering time,which could hinder the cracking propagation,increase the cryogenic toughness and decrease the strength,which is caused by the precipitation of reversed austensite between martensite blocks to scavenge carbon and other deleterious elements in matrix.

Abstract:The effects of thermomechanical treatment (cold rolling + tempering) on the microstructure evolution, precipitation behavior, and mechanical properties of the 9Cr3Co3W1Cu martensitic steel (G115) were investigated, by adjusting the cold rolling reduction (0, 20% and 40%), tempering temperature (750 °C and 800 °C) and time (30 min and 120 min). The results indicate that the G115 steel with 20% cold-rolling reduction rate followed by tempering at 800 °C for 30 min exhibits the optimum mechanical response (yield strength ( σ s ) 899 MPa, elongation ( δ ) 26%), compared with that of 40% cold-rolled ( σ s 812 MPa, δ 17%) and undeformed steels ( σ s 670 MPa, δ 15%). The optimum yield strength in 20%-800 °C-30 min steel is attributed to the dislocation strengthening and precipitation strengthening, for the relatively low recrystallization rate and high density Cr 23 C 6 and NbC precipitates, and the good ductility is attributed to the low recrystallization ratio and the uniform microstructure. As a comparison, in 40%-800 °C-30 min steel, a ferrite martensite dual phase structure formed. Due to the hardness difference between the two phases, there may be significant inharmony during the deformation process, leading to premature fracture.

Abstract:Tensile properties and microstructure changes under different stress states of tempered 9Cr-F/M steel were characterized using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Vickers hardness tester, and tensile tester. This tempered steel has a typical lath martensite structure with only a few polygonal ferrites embedded, and M23C6 and MX phases nucleated on the lath boundaries or within the sub-grains. At elevated temperatures, the strength of the steel decreases. However, the elongation at 400 °C is lower than that at room temperature. For the necking zone, tensile deformation made the grain elongated to the direction of applied stress and thus the grain’s cross-section becomes smaller. For samples with rectangular working area cross-section, the deformation in the TD direction was more severe than that in the ND direction, which made the grain elongated in the TD direction. These results can provide some guidance for composition optimization of the 9Cr-F/M steel and facilitate a better understanding of the fracture mechanism under different stress states.

Abstract:Herein, the effects of quenching, lamellarizing, and tempering (QLT) on reversed austenite and cryogenic toughness of 9Ni steels were investigated in terms of microstructure characterization, internal friction tests, and low temperature impact tests. The results showed that QLT treatment not only refined the grain effectively, but also promoted the formation of reversed austenite, thus obtaining excellent ultra-cryogenic toughness. Furthermore, QLT treatment promoted the redistribution of C, Mn, and Ni elements, so that more stable austenite was retained to room temperature. The phase transformation peak in the internal friction peak confirmed that QLT treatment effectively promoted the formation of reversed austenite, while the Snoek–Kê–Köster peak showed a strong interaction between carbon atoms and dislocations. Abstract:In this work, we study the effect of high-temperature thermomechanical treatment (HTMT) with deformation in the austenite region on the microstructure, tensile properties, impact toughness, and fracture features of advanced low-activation 12% chromium ferritic-martensitic reactor steel EK-181. HTMT more significantly modifies the steel structural-phase state than the traditional heat treatment (THT). As a result of HTMT, the hierarchically organized structure of steel is refined. The forming grains and subgrains are elongated in the rolling direction and flattened in the rolling plane (so-called pancake structure) and have a high density of dislocations pinned by stable nanosized particles of the MX type. This microstructure provides a simultaneous increase, relative to THT, in the yield strength and impact toughness of steel EK-181 and does not practically change its ductile-brittle transition temperature. The most important reasons for the increase in impact toughness are a decrease in the effective grain size of steel (martensite blocks and ferrite grains) and the appearance of a crack-arrester type delamination perpendicular to the main crack propagation direction. This causes branching of the main crack and an increase in the absorbed impact energy.

Abstract:To further improve the mechanical properties of the as-cast 7.5 vol.% TiBw/Ti–6Al–2.5Sn–4Zr–0.7Mo–0.3Si composite, multi-directional forging (MDF) and subsequent heat treatments were carried out to adjust TiB whiskers (TiBw) and matrix characteristics. The effect of various microstructures on the tensile properties and fracture toughness of the composites was analyzed in this paper. After MDF, the TiBw are broken into short rods with a low aspect ratio and display a random distribution. Moreover, distinct microstructures were obtained after thermomechanical processing and different heat treatments. Both room-temperature and high-temperature tensile strength and ductility are improved after thermomechanical processing. By increasing the solution-treatment temperature, the microstructures transform from equiaxed to fully lamellar. A simultaneous improvement of the room-temperature and high-temperature properties is associated with the microstructural changes. In addition, the fracture toughness exhibits an increasing trend as the volume fraction of equiaxial α phases decreases. The lamellar microstructure demonstrates excellent fracture toughness due to deflection of the crack propagation path.

Abstract:A novel treatment comprised of ultra-fast cooling, intercritical quenching and tempering is proposed to modify the microstructure and improve the mechanical properties of low-concentration Ni-containing steel (6.5 pct Ni steel). The influence of intercritical temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties has been systemically investigated. The results reveal that a mixed microstructure of alloy-depleted intercritical ferrite and alloy-enriched fresh martensite and retained austenite is obtained after intercritical quenching. Moreover, reversed austenite is formed at the grain boundaries of fresh martensite and retained austenite during subsequent tempering. Furthermore, the increase in intercritical temperature promoted the formation of lath-like fresh martensite, leading to the refinement of intercritical ferrite and the formation of secondary acicular reversed austenite. When the intercritical temperature was increased to 670 °C and 700 °C, reversed austenite exhibited sufficient stability at − 196 °C because of the fine-grained structure and acicular morphology. Finally, an optimal combination of strength and cryogenic toughness has been achieved by intercritical quenching from 700 °C. The obtained high yield strength can be ascribed to the decrease in the amount and size of intercritical ferrite, whereas excellent cryogenic toughness can be attributed to the increase in fine-grained stable acicular reversed austenite and decrease in effective grain size.

Abstract:Temper embrittlement is a major challenge encountered during the heat treatment of high-performance steels for large forgings. This study investigates the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of Cr-Ni-Mo-V thick-walled steel, designed for large forgings with a tensile strength of 1500 MPa, under different tempering cooling rates. Optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) were employed to analyze the microstructural features. The results demonstrate that the embrittlement occurring during air cooling after tempering is attributed to the concentration of impurities near Fe3C at the grain boundaries. The low-temperature impact toughness at -40 °C after water quenching reaches 29 J due to the accelerated cooling rate during tempering, which slows down the diffusion of impurity elements towards the grain boundaries, resulting in a reduced concentration and dislocation density and an increased stability of the grain boundaries, thereby enhancing toughness. The bainite content decreases and the interface between martensite and bainite undergoes changes after water quenching during tempering. These alterations influence the crack propagation direction within the two-phase microstructure, further modifying the toughness. These findings contribute to the understanding of temper embrittlement and provide valuable guidance for optimizing heat treatment processes to enhance the performance of high-performance steels in large forgings.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part L: Journal of Materials: Design and Applications, Ahead of Print. There is an urgent need to operate thermal power plant at significantly higher temperatures, pressures and flexibility, in order to reduce emissions, increase efficiency and facilitate uptake of renewable energy. This demands significantly improved design of welded connections for thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF). A common mode of high temperature failure for welded 9Cr steels in such plant is Type IV failure, due to reduced hardness in the inter-critical heat affected zone (IC-HAZ). Little or no work has been previously conducted on TMF characterisation of HAZ of 9Cr steels. This work presents development of a combined Gleeble physically-simulated welding process for P91 heat affected zone, based on measured thermal histories from bead-on-plate welding trials, with in-situ low cycle thermo-mechanical fatigue up to 650°C. The simulated welding process, including post-weld heat treatment (PWHT), is shown to have significant effect on both microstructure and TMF behaviour, including life. The as-welded condition is shown to have the cyclically hardest stable response and the longest life, whereas the PWHT and parent material (PM) cases have similar cyclically soft responses and lives. A recently-developed through-process, physically-based, thermal-metallurgical-mechanical model is adapted and applied to the simulated welding thermal cycle and TMF testing for PM and HAZ specimens. The model is calibrated and validated against high temperature low-cycle fatigue and low-cycle TMF data for PM in the range 400 to 600°C, for different strain-ranges and strain-rates. It is also shown to capture some observed general trends for the simulated HAZ-TMF testing, especially the significant softening effect of PWHT and the significant increase in cyclic strength for the as-welded condition.

Abstract:The effect of solution treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a high‑manganese (Mn) twin-induced plastic (TWIP) cryogenic steel that was alloyed from elemental titanium (Ti), vanadium (V) and molybdenum (Mo) was investigated by a variety of techniques such as microstructural characterization, room tensile testing and −196°C impact testing. The austenite grain size grew slowly with an increase of the solutionizing temperature (ST). The relatively weak effect of the ST on the austenite grain size is attributed to the superior thermal stability and coarsening resistance of the (Ti, V, Mo)C precipitate, which hindered austenite grain growth. An increase in ST improved the low-temperature toughness (LTT) significantly and decreased the strain hardening rate (SHR), but had no significant effect on the yield strength. The Hall–Petch strengthening coefficient for yield strength was small, and was estimated to be 153MPaμm0.5. Undissolved large-sized chromium (Cr) carbide can deteriorate the LTT significantly. Because of its excellent mechanical properties, high-Mn steel that was alloyed by elemental Ti, V and Mo can be used to manufacture storage tanks for liquefied natural gas.
