Abstract:Experiments were designed to determine whether or not endogenous endothelin (ET) contributes to endothelium-independent anoxic contractions of canine coronary arteries. Rings without endothelium were suspended for isometric tension recording in conventional organ chambers filled with modified Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate solution. Anoxia (PO2 < or = 1 mm Hg) caused reproducible contractions. The anoxic contractions were augmented by exogenous endothelin-1 (ET-1). At 10(-6) M and 10(-5) M, BQ-123 (a specific endothelin antagonist) inhibited both the facilitatory effect of ET-1 and the anoxic contractions. At these concentrations BQ-123 caused a parallel shift to the right of the concentration-response curve to ET-1 and a small but significant depression of the response to norepinephrine, without affecting the maximal response to the catecholamine. BQ-123 did not significantly affect the concentration-response curve to Ca2+ in depolarizing solution (60 mM KCl). Monoclonal antibodies against ET-1 (70 micrograms/ml) inhibited the response to exogenous ET-1 and abolished the facilitating effect of the peptide, but did not affect the anoxic contractions. These results suggest that ET-1 contributes to anoxic contractions in canine coronary arteries without endothelium. The receptor involved belongs to the ETA-subtype and is not accessible to monoclonal antibodies.
Enhancing rhythmic temporal expectations: The dominance of auditory modality under spatial uncertainty

Abstract:To effectively process the most relevant information, the brain anticipates the optimal timing for allocating attentional resources. Behavior can be optimized by automatically aligning attention with external rhythmic structures, whether visual or auditory. Although the auditory modality is known for its efficacy in representing temporal information, the current body of research has not conclusively determined whether visual or auditory rhythmic presentations have a definitive advantage in entraining temporal attention. The present study directly examined the effects of auditory and visual rhythmic cues on the discrimination of visual targets in Experiment 1 and on auditory targets in Experiment 2. Additionally, the role of endogenous spatial attention was also considered. When and where the target was the most likely to occur were cued by unimodal (visual or auditory) and bimodal (audiovisual) signals. A sequence of salient events was employed to elicit rhythm-based temporal expectations and a symbolic predictive cue served to orient spatial attention. The results suggest a superiority of auditory over visual rhythms, irrespective of spatial attention, whether the spatial cue and rhythm converge or not (unimodal or bimodal), and regardless of the target modality (visual or auditory). These findings are discussed in terms of a modality-specific rhythmic orienting, while considering a single, supramodal system operating in a top-down manner for endogenous spatial attention.

Abstract:The human brain exhibits both oscillatory and aperiodic, or 1/f, activity. Although a large body of research has focused on the relationship between brain rhythms and sensory processes, aperiodic activity has often been overlooked as functionally irrelevant. Prompted by recent findings linking aperiodic activity to the balance between neural excitation and inhibition, we investigated its effects on the temporal resolution of perception. We recorded EEG from participants (both sexes) during resting state and a task in which they detected the presence of two flashes separated by variable inter-stimulus intervals. Two-flash discrimination accuracy typically follows a sigmoid function whose steepness reflects perceptual variability or inconsistent integration/segregation of the stimuli. We found that individual differences in the steepness of the psychometric function correlated with EEG aperiodic exponents over posterior scalp sites. In other words, participants with flatter EEG spectra (i.e., greater neural excitation) exhibited increased sensory noise, resulting in shallower psychometric curves. Our finding suggest that aperiodic EEG is linked to sensory integration processes usually attributed to the rhythmic inhibition of neural oscillations. Overall, this correspondence between aperiodic neural excitation and behavioral measures of sensory noise provides a more comprehensive explanation of the relationship between brain activity and sensory integration and represents an important extension to theories of how the brain samples sensory input over time.Significance statement Neural oscillations are fundamental for temporal organization and communication of information in the brain, while irregular activity has been suggested to disrupt these processes.We investigated the impact of aperiodic electrophysiological activity on a visual integration task known to depend on rhythmic brain organization. Crucially, Individuals exhibiting higher 1/f electrophysiological noise showed increased uncertainty or perceptual noise in temporal perception, highlighting how irregular neural activity affects tasks relying on periodic neural organization. Imprecise counting of observations in averaging tasks predicts primacy and recency effects

Abstract:Primacy and recency effects - wherein early and recent observations exert disproportionate influence on judgments - have long been noted in cognitive tasks involving the sequential presentation of information. In studies where human subjects make decisions based on the average of a sequence of numbers, recency effects are typically modeled phenomenologically through exponential discounting, while primacy effects are neglected altogether. Here, we exhibit the prevalence of both effects in such tasks, and propose that they result from the observer's imprecision in their running tally of how many pieces of information they have received. If their approximate counting follows a central tendency - a typical Bayesian pattern - then past information is overweighted near the beginning of the sequence, while new numbers are overweighted towards the end of the sequence. Thus both primacy and recency effects are simultaneously predicted by this single mechanism. The model moreover nests exponential discounting as a special case in which the observer has no information about the count. The behavioral data suggests that subjects indeed misestimate the count of observations, with biases similar to those observed in numerosity-estimation tasks. Finally, we present evidence that the central tendency of subjects shifts towards lower counts in tasks with shorter sequence lengths, consistent with a Bayesian estimation of the counts. These findings provide new insights into the cognitive processes underlying serial-position effects in averaging tasks, with broader implications for other cognitive domains.

Abstract:The idea that external rhythms synchronize attention cross-modally has attracted much interest and scientific inquiry. Yet, whether associated attentional modulations are indeed rhythmical in that they spring from and map onto an underlying meter has not been clearly established. Here we tested this idea while addressing the shortcomings of previous work associated with confounding (i) metricality and regularity, (ii) rhythmic and temporal expectations or (iii) global and local temporal effects. We designed sound sequences that varied orthogonally (high/low) in metricality and regularity and presented them as task-irrelevant auditory background in four separate blocks. The participants' task was to detect rare visual targets occurring at a silent metrically aligned or misaligned temporal position. We found that target timing was irrelevant for reaction times and visual event-related potentials. High background regularity and to a lesser extent metricality facilitated target processing across metrically aligned and misaligned positions. Additionally, high regularity modulated auditory background frequencies in the EEG recorded over occipital cortex. We conclude that external rhythms, rather than synchronizing attention cross-modally, confer general, nontemporal benefits. Their predictability conserves processing resources that then benefit stimulus representations in other modalities.

Abstract:In our multisensory world, we often rely more on auditory information than on visual input for temporal processing. One typical demonstration of this is that the rate of auditory flutter assimilates the rate of concurrent visual flicker. To date, however, this auditory dominance effect has largely been studied using regular auditory rhythms. It thus remains unclear whether irregular rhythms would have a similar impact on visual temporal processing, what information is extracted from the auditory sequence that comes to influence visual timing, and how the auditory and visual temporal rates are integrated together in quantitative terms. We investigated these questions by assessing, and modeling, the influence of a task-irrelevant auditory sequence on the type of "Ternus apparent motion": group motion versus element motion. The type of motion seen critically depends on the time interval between the two Ternus display frames. We found that an irrelevant auditory sequence preceding the Ternus display modulates the visual interval, making observers perceive either more group motion or more element motion. This biasing effect manifests whether the auditory sequence is regular or irregular, and it is based on a summary statistic extracted from the sequential intervals: their geometric mean. However, the audiovisual interaction depends on the discrepancy between the mean auditory and visual intervals: if it becomes too large, no interaction occurs-which can be quantitatively described by a partial Bayesian integration model. Overall, our findings reveal a cross-modal perceptual averaging principle that may underlie complex audiovisual interactions in many everyday dynamic situations. Abstract:Rhythm perception can be distorted following prolonged exposure to an isochronous rhythm. It has been suggested that this might arise from the neural adaptation of temporal interval selective neurons. However, the rhythm in our daily life is not always isochronous, and the mechanism that rules the anisochronous rhythm is unclear. Here, we used a sensory adaptation paradigm to investigate whether rhythm perception can be affected by adaptation to the anisochronous rhythm. In Experiments 1 and 2, the direction of tempo change (accelerating vs. decelerating) judgment task and the rhythmic isochronism (isochronous vs. anisochronous) judgment task were used to evaluate participants' perception of rhythms, respectively. We found that after adaptation to a decelerating rhythm, participants tended to perceive the subsequent isochronous rhythm as accelerating. In Experiment 3, visual test rhythms followed the auditory adapting rhythm. In this situation, we did not find any adaptation effects on subsequent rhythm perception. Our results suggest that adaptation to the decelerating rhythm can induce a modality-specific rhythm aftereffect, which is consistent with the temporal order contingent duration aftereffect. It implies a unified timing mechanism for duration and rhythm perception.
Average Is Optimal: An Inverted-U Relationship between Trial-to-Trial Brain Activity and Behavioral Performance

Abstract:It is well known that even under identical task conditions, there is a tremendous amount of trial-to-trial variability in both brain activity and behavioral output. Thus far the vast majority of event-related potential (ERP) studies investigating the relationship between trial-to-trial fluctuations in brain activity and behavioral performance have only tested a monotonic relationship between them. However, it was recently found that across-trial variability can correlate with behavioral performance independent of trial-averaged activity. This finding predicts a U- or inverted-U- shaped relationship between trial-to-trial brain activity and behavioral output, depending on whether larger brain variability is associated with better or worse behavior, respectively. Using a visual stimulus detection task, we provide evidence from human electrocorticography (ECoG) for an inverted-U brain-behavior relationship: When the raw fluctuation in broadband ECoG activity is closer to the across-trial mean, hit rate is higher and reaction times faster. Importantly, we show that this relationship is present not only in the post-stimulus task-evoked brain activity, but also in the pre-stimulus spontaneous brain activity, suggesting anticipatory brain dynamics. Our findings are consistent with the presence of stochastic noise in the brain. They further support attractor network theories, which postulate that the brain settles into a more confined state space under task performance, and proximity to the targeted trajectory is associated with better performance.

A bounded accumulation model of temporal generalization outperforms existing models and captures modality differences and learning effects

Abstract:Multiple systems in the brain track the passage of time and can adapt their activity to temporal requirements (Paton & Buonomano, 2018). While the neural implementation of timing varies widely between neural substrates and behavioral tasks, at the algorithmic level many of these behaviors can be described as bounded accumulation (Balci & Simen, 2024). So far, from the range of temporal psychophysical tasks, the bounded accumulation model has only been applied to temporal bisection, in which participants are requested to categorize an interval as "long" or "short" (Balci & Simen, 2014; Ofir & Landau, 2022). In this work, we extend the model to fit performance in the temporal generalization task, in which participants are required to categorize an interval as being the same or different compared to a standard, or reference, duration (Wearden, 1992). Previous models of performance in this task focused on either the group level or performance of highly trained animals (Birngruber et al., 2014; Church & Gibbon, 1982; Wearden, 1992). Whether the same models can fit performance from a few hundreds of trials of single participants, necessary for comparing performance across experimental manipulations, has not been tested. A drift-diffusion model with two decision boundaries fits the data of single participants better than the previous models. We ran two experiments, one comparing performance between vision and audition and another examining the effect of learning. We found that decision boundaries can be modified independently: While the upper boundary was higher in vision compared to audition, the lower boundary decreased with learning in the task.

Influence of musical training on temporal productions when using fast and slow counting paces

Abstract:The aim of the study was to assess the ability to maintain a steady pace during a counting task, aloud or silently, when a fast (28 counts every 900 ms) or slow (18 counts every 1,400 ms) pace is adopted (target = 25,200 ms), and to test whether ability is the same for musician and nonmusicians. The study analyzes the mean and variability of 30 temporal productions. The results show more variability (a larger coefficient of variation: standard deviation/mean production) in the condition where the pace is slow, a finding consistent with previous reports with this task. This finding applies here in both the aloud and silent counting conditions and, most importantly, applies to both musicians and nonmusicians. The results also indicate that there is no significant difference for the absolute error (|mean production − target duration|). In brief, the capacity to keep variability low when maintaining a pace seems to gain benefit from musical training, and this training difference does not depend on counting aloud versus silently and is not restricted to brief intervals.

Abstract:Accumulating evidence suggests that rhythmic temporal cues in the environment influence the encoding of information into long-term memory. Here, we test the hypothesis that these mnemonic effects of rhythm reflect the coupling of high-frequency (gamma) oscillations to entrained lower-frequency oscillations synchronized to the beat of the rhythm. In Study 1, we first test this hypothesis in the context of global effects of rhythm on memory, when memory is superior for visual stimuli presented in rhythmic compared with arrhythmic patterns at encoding [Jones, A., & Ward, E. V. Rhythmic temporal structure at encoding enhances recognition memory, Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, 31, 1549-1562, 2019]. We found that rhythmic presentation of visual stimuli during encoding was associated with greater phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) between entrained low-frequency (delta) oscillations and higher-frequency (gamma) oscillations. In Study 2, we next investigated cross-frequency PAC in the context of local effects of rhythm on memory encoding, when memory is superior for visual stimuli presented in-synchrony compared with out-of-synchrony with a background auditory beat [Hickey, P., Merseal, H., Patel, A. D., & Race, E. Memory in time: Neural tracking of low-frequency rhythm dynamically modulates memory formation. Neuroimage, 213, 116693, 2020]. We found that the mnemonic effect of rhythm in this context was again associated with increased cross-frequency PAC between entrained low-frequency (delta) oscillations and higher-frequency (gamma) oscillations. Furthermore, the magnitude of gamma power modulations positively scaled with the subsequent memory benefit for in- versus out-of-synchrony stimuli. Together, these results suggest that the influence of rhythm on memory encoding may reflect the temporal coordination of higher-frequency gamma activity by entrained low-frequency oscillations.
Rational Inattention and Tonic Dopamine

Abstract:Abstract Slow-timescale (tonic) changes in dopamine (DA) contribute to a wide variety of processes in reinforcement learning, interval timing, and other domains. Furthermore, changes in tonic DA exert distinct effects depending on when they occur (e.g., during learning vs. performance) and what task the subject is performing (e.g., operant vs. classical conditioning). Two influential theories of tonic DA—the average reward theory and the Bayesian theory in which DA controls precision—have each been successful at explaining a subset of empirical findings. But how the same DA signal performs two seemingly distinct functions without creating crosstalk is not well understood. Here we reconcile the two theories under the unifying framework of ‘rational inattention,’ which (1) conceptually links average reward and precision, (2) outlines how DA manipulations affect this relationship, and in so doing, (3) captures new empirical phenomena. In brief, rational inattention asserts that agents can increase their precision in a task (and thus improve their performance) by paying a cognitive cost. Crucially, whether this cost is worth paying depends on average reward availability, reported by DA. The monotonic relationship between average reward and precision means that the DA signal contains the information necessary to retrieve the precision. When this information is needed after the task is performed, as presumed by Bayesian inference, acute manipulations of DA will bias behavior in predictable ways. We show how this framework reconciles a remarkably large collection of experimental findings. In reinforcement learning, the rational inattention framework predicts that learning from positive and negative feedback should be enhanced in high and low DA states, respectively, and that DA should tip the exploration-exploitation balance toward exploitation. In interval timing, this framework predicts that DA should increase the speed of the internal clock and decrease the extent of interference by other temporal stimuli during temporal reproduction (the central tendency effect). Finally, rational inattention makes the new predictions that these effects should be critically dependent on the controllability of rewards, that post-reward delays in intertemporal choice tasks should be underestimated, and that average reward manipulations should affect the speed of the clock—thus capturing empirical findings that are unexplained by either theory alone. Our results suggest that a common computational repertoire may underlie the seemingly heterogeneous roles of DA. Author Summary The roles of tonic dopamine (DA) have been the subject of much speculation, partly due to the variety of processes it has been implicated in. For instance, tonic DA modulates how we learn new information, but also affects how previously learned information is used. DA affects the speed of our internal timing mechanism, but also modulates the degree to which our temporal estimates are influenced by context. DA improves performance in some tasks, but seems only to affect confidence in others. Are there common principles that govern the role of DA across these domains? In this work, we introduce the concept of ‘rational inattention,’ originally borrowed from economics, to the DA literature. We show how the rational inattention account of DA unites two influential theories that are seemingly at odds: the average reward theory and the Bayesian theory of tonic DA. We then show how this framework reconciles the diverse roles of DA, which cannot be addressed by either theory alone.
Expected reward value and reward prediction errors reinforce but also interfere with human time perception

Abstract:Time perception is often investigated in animal models and in humans using instrumental paradigms where reinforcement learning (RL) and associated dopaminergic processes have modulatory effects. For example, interval timing, which includes the judgment of relatively short intervals of time (ranging from milliseconds to minutes), has been shown to be modulated by manipulations of striatal dopamine. The ‘expected value of reward’ (EV) and ‘reward prediction errors’ (RPEs) are key variables described in RL-theory that explain dopaminergic signals during reward processing during instrumental learning. Notably, the underlying connection between RL-processes and time perception in humans is relatively underexplored. Herein, we investigated the impact of EV and RPEs on interval timing in humans. We tested the hypotheses that EV and RPEs modulate the experience of short time intervals. We demonstrate that expectations of monetary gains or losses increases the initial performance error for 1000ms intervals. Temporal learning over repeated trials is observed with accelerated learning of non-reinforced 1000ms intervals; however, RPEs – specifically about rewards and not punishments – appear to reinforce performance errors, which effectively interferes with the rate at which (reinforced) 1000ms intervals were learned. These effects were not significant for 3000ms and 5000ms intervals. Our results demonstrate that EV and RPEs influence human behavior about 1000ms time intervals. We discuss our results considering model-free ‘temporal difference RL-theory’, which suggests the hypothesis that interval timing may be mediated by dopaminergic signals that reinforce the learning and prediction of dynamic state-transitions which could be encoded without an explicit reference to ‘time’ intervals.

Task goals shape the relationship between decision and movement speed

Abstract:The speed at which we move is linked to the speed at which we decide to make these movements. Yet, the principles guiding such relationship remain unclear: while some studies point towards a shared invigoration process boosting decision and movement speed jointly, others rather indicate a tradeoff between both levels of control, with slower movements accompanying faster decisions. Here, we aimed (1) at further investigating the existence of a shared invigoration process linking decision and movement and (2) at testing the hypothesis that such a link is masked when detrimental to the reward rate. To this aim, we tested 62 subjects who performed the tokens task in two experiments (separate sessions): Experiment 1 evaluated how changing decision speed affects movement speed while Experiment 2 assessed how changing movement speed affects decision speed. In the latter experiment, subjects were either encouraged to favor decision speed (fast decision group) or decision accuracy (slow decision group). Various mixed model analyses revealed a coregulation of decision (urgency) and movement speed in Experiment 1 and in the fast decision group of Experiment 2, but not in the slow decision group despite the fact that these same subjects displayed a coregulation effect in Experiment 1. Altogether, our findings support the idea that coregulation occurs as a default mode but that this form of control is diminished or supplanted by a tradeoff relationship, contingent on reward rate maximization. Drawing from these behavioral observations, we propose that multiple processes contribute to shaping the speed of decisions and movements.

Abstract:Abstract The brain uses temporal structure in the environment, like rhythm in music and speech, to predict the timing of events, thereby optimizing their processing and perception. Temporal expectations can be grounded in different aspects of the input structure, such as a regular beat or a predictable pattern. One influential account posits that a generic mechanism underlies beat-based and pattern-based expectations, namely, entrainment of low-frequency neural oscillations to rhythmic input, whereas other accounts assume different underlying neural mechanisms. Here, we addressed this outstanding issue by examining EEG activity and behavioral responses during silent periods following rhythmic auditory sequences. We measured responses outlasting the rhythms both to avoid confounding the EEG analyses with evoked responses, and to directly test whether beat-based and pattern-based expectations persist beyond stimulation, as predicted by entrainment theories. To properly disentangle beat-based and pattern-based expectations, which often occur simultaneously, we used non-isochronous rhythms with a beat, a predictable pattern, or random timing. In Experiment 1 (n = 32), beat-based expectations affected behavioral ratings of probe events for two beat-cycles after the end of the rhythm. The effects of pattern-based expectations reflected expectations for one interval. In Experiment 2 (n = 27), using EEG, we found enhanced spectral power at the beat frequency for beat-based sequences both during listening and silence. For pattern-based sequences, enhanced power at a pattern-specific frequency was present during listening, but not silence. Moreover, we found a difference in the evoked signal following pattern-based and beat-based sequences. Finally, we show how multivariate pattern decoding and multiscale entropy—measures sensitive to non-oscillatory components of the signal—can be used to probe temporal expectations. Together, our results suggest that the input structure used to form temporal expectations may affect the associated neural mechanisms. We suggest climbing activity and low-frequency oscillations may be differentially associated with pattern-based and beat-based expectations.

Abstract:Noise is intuitively thought to interfere with perceptual learning; However, human and machine learning studies suggest that, in certain contexts, variability may reduce overfitting and improve generalizability. Whereas previous studies have examined the effects of variability in learned stimuli or tasks, it is hitherto unknown what are the effects of variability in the temporal environment. Here, we examined this question in two groups of adult participants ( N = 40) presented with visual targets at either random or fixed temporal routines and then tested on the same type of targets at a new nearly-fixed temporal routine. Findings reveal that participants of the random group performed better and adapted quicker following a change in the timing routine, relative to participants of the fixed group. Corroborated with eye-tracking and computational modeling, these findings suggest that prior exposure to temporal variability promotes the formation of new temporal expectations and enhances generalizability in a dynamic environment. We conclude that noise plays an important role in promoting perceptual learning in the temporal domain: rather than interfering with the formation of temporal expectations, noise enhances them. This counterintuitive effect is hypothesized to be achieved through eliminating overfitting and promoting generalizability.

Abstract:Recent studies demonstrate that behavioral performance during visual spatial attention fluctuates at theta (4 to 8 Hz) and alpha (8 to 16 Hz) frequencies, linked to phase–amplitude coupling of neural oscillations within the visual and attentional system depending on task demands. To investigate the influence of prior spatial prediction, we employed an adaptive discrimination task with variable cue–target onset asynchronies (300 to 1,300 ms) and different cue validity (100% & 50%). We recorded electroencephalography concurrently and adopted adaptive electroencephalography data analytical methods, namely, Holo–Holo-Hilbert spectral analysis and Holo–Hilbert cross-frequency phase clustering. Our findings indicate that response precision for near-threshold Landolt rings fluctuates at the theta band (4 Hz) under certain predictions and at alpha & beta bands (15 & 19 Hz) with uncertain predictions. Furthermore, spatial prediction strengthens theta–alpha modulations at parietal-occipital areas, frontal theta/parietal-occipital alpha phase–amplitude coupling, and within frontal theta-alpha phase–amplitude coupling. Notably, during the pretarget period, beta-modulated gamma oscillations in parietal-occipital areas predict response precision under uncertain prediction, while frontal theta/parietal-occipital alpha phase–amplitude coupling predicts response precision in spatially certain conditions. In conclusion, our study highlights the critical role of spatial prediction in attentional sampling rhythms with both behavioral and electroencephalography evidence.
