Abstract:Speech recognition is robust to background noise. One underlying neural mechanism is that the auditory system segregates speech from the listening background and encodes it reliably. Such robust internal representation has been demonstrated in auditory cortex by neural activity entrained to the temporal envelope of speech. A paradox, however, then arises, as the spectro-temporal fine structure rather than the temporal envelope is known to be the major cue to segregate target speech from background noise. Does the reliable cortical entrainment in fact reflect a robust internal "synthesis" of the attended speech stream rather than direct tracking of the acoustic envelope? Here, we test this hypothesis by degrading the spectro-temporal fine structure while preserving the temporal envelope using vocoders. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings reveal that cortical entrainment to vocoded speech is severely degraded by background noise, in contrast to the robust entrainment to natural speech. Furthermore, cortical entrainment in the delta-band (1-4Hz) predicts the speech recognition score at the level of individual listeners. These results demonstrate that reliable cortical entrainment to speech relies on the spectro-temporal fine structure, and suggest that cortical entrainment to the speech envelope is not merely a representation of the speech envelope but a coherent representation of multiscale spectro-temporal features that are synchronized to the syllabic and phrasal rhythms of speech.

Abstract:Auditory cortical activity is entrained to the temporal envelope of speech, which corresponds to the syllabic rhythm of speech. Such entrained cortical activity can be measured from subjects naturally listening to sentences or spoken passages, providing a reliable neural marker of online speech processing. A central question still remains to be answered about whether cortical entrained activity is more closely related to speech perception or non-speech-specific auditory encoding. Here, we review a few hypotheses about the functional roles of cortical entrainment to speech, e.g., encoding acoustic features, parsing syllabic boundaries, and selecting sensory information in complex listening environments. It is likely that speech entrainment is not a homogeneous response and these hypotheses apply separately for speech entrainment generated from different neural sources. The relationship between entrained activity and speech intelligibility is also discussed. A tentative conclusion is that theta-band entrainment (4-8 Hz) encodes speech features critical for intelligibility while delta-band entrainment (1-4 Hz) is related to the perceived, non-speech-specific acoustic rhythm. To further understand the functional properties of speech entrainment, a splitter's approach will be needed to investigate (1) not just the temporal envelope but what specific acoustic features are encoded and (2) not just speech intelligibility but what specific psycholinguistic processes are encoded by entrained cortical activity. Similarly, the anatomical and spectro-temporal details of entrained activity need to be taken into account when investigating its functional properties.
Acoustic Correlates of the Syllabic Rhythm of Speech: Modulation Spectrum or Local Features of the Temporal Envelope

Abstract:The speech envelope is considered as a major acoustic correlate of the syllable rhythm since the peak frequency in the speech modulation spectrum matches the mean syllable rate. Nevertheless, it has not been quantified whether the peak modulation frequency can track the syllable rate of individual utterances and how much variance of the speech envelope can be explained by the syllable rhythm. Here, we address these problems by analyzing large speech corpora (>1000 hours of recording of multiple languages) using advanced sequence-to-sequence modeling. It is found that, only when averaged over minutes of speech recordings, the peak modulation frequency of speech reliably correlates with the syllable rate of a speaker. In contrast, the phase-locking between speech envelope and syllable onsets is robustly observed within a few seconds of recordings. Based on speaker-independent linear and nonlinear models, the timing of syllable onsets explains about 13% and 46% variance of the speech envelope, respectively. These results demonstrate that local temporal features in the speech envelope precisely encodes the syllable onsets but the modulation spectrum is not always dominated by the syllable rhythm. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest.

Abstract:This study investigates the neural representation of speech in complex listening environments. Subjects listened to a narrated story, masked by either another speech stream or by stationary noise. Neural recordings were made using magnetoencephalography (MEG), which can measure cortical activity synchronized to the temporal envelope of speech. When two speech streams are presented simultaneously, cortical activity is predominantly synchronized to the speech stream the listener attends to, even if the unattended, competing-speech stream is more intense (up to 8 dB). When speech is presented together with spectrally matched stationary noise, cortical activity remains precisely synchronized to the temporal envelope of speech until the noise is 9 dB more intense. Critically, the precision of the neural synchronization to speech predicts subjectively rated speech intelligibility in noise. Further analysis reveals that it is longer-latency (similar to 100 ms) neural responses, but not shorter-latency (similar to 50 ms) neural responses, that show selectivity to the attended speech and invariance to background noise. This indicates a processing transition, from encoding the acoustic scene to encoding the behaviorally important auditory object, in auditory cortex. In sum, it is demonstrated that neural synchronization to the speech envelope is robust to acoustic interference, whether speech or noise, and therefore provides a strong candidate for the neural basis of acoustic-background invariant speech recognition.
Speaking Rhythmically Improves Speech Recognition under "Cocktail-Party" Conditions

Abstract:This study examines whether speech rhythm affects speech recognition under “cocktail-party” conditions. Against a two-talker masker, but not a speech-spectrum noise masker, recognition of the last (third) keyword in a normal rhythmic sentence was significantly better than that of the first keyword. However, this word-position-related speech-recognition improvement disappeared for rhythmically hybrid target sentences that were constructed by grouping parts from different sentences with different artificially modulated rhythms (rates) (fast, normal, or slow). Thus, the normal rhythm with a constant rate plays a role in improving speech recognition against informational speech masking, probably through a build-up of temporal prediction for target words.

Abstract:The relation between rhythm and language has been investigated over the last decades, with evidence that these share overlapping perceptual mechanisms emerging from several different strands of research. The dynamic Attention Theory posits that neural entrainment to musical rhythm results in synchronized oscillations in attention, enhancing perception of other events occurring at the same rate. In this study, this prediction was tested in 10 year-old children by means of a psychoacoustic speech recognition in babble paradigm. It was hypothesized that rhythm effects evoked via a short isochronous sequence of beats would provide optimal word recognition in babble when beats and word are in sync. We compared speech recognition in babble performance in the presence of isochronous and in sync vs. non-isochronous or out of sync sequence of beats. Results showed that (a) word recognition was the best when rhythm and word were in sync, and (b) the effect was not uniform across syllables and gender of subjects. Our results suggest that pure tone beats affect speech recognition at early levels of sensory or phonemic processing.

Rhythm Perception, Speaking Rate Entrainment, and Conversational Quality: A Mediated Model

Abstract:Purpose: Acoustic-prosodic entrainment, defined as the tendency for individuals to modify their speech behaviors to more closely align with the behaviors of their conversation partner, plays an important role in successful interaction. From a mechanistic perspective, acoustic-prosodic entrainment is, by its very nature, a rhythmic activity. Accordingly, it is highly plausible that an individual's rhythm perception abilities play a role in their ability to successfully entrain. Here, we examine the impact of rhythm perception in speaking rate entrainment and subsequent conversational quality. Method: A round-robin paradigm was used to collect 90 dialogues from neurotypical adults. Additional assessments determined participants' rhythm perception abilities, social competence, and partner familiarity (i.e., whether the conversation partners knew each other prior to the interaction. Mediation analysis was used to examine the relationships between rhythm perception scores, speaking rate entrainment (using a measure of static local synchrony), and a measure of conversational success (i.e., conversational quality) based on third-party listener observations. Findings were compared to the same analysis with three additional predictive factors: participant gender, partner familiarity, and social competence. Results: Results revealed a relationship between rhythm perception and speaking rate entrainment. In unfamiliar conversation partners, there was a relationship between speaking rate entrainment and conversational quality. The relationships between entrainment and each of the three additional factors (i.e., gender, partner familiarity, and social competence) were nonsignificant. Conclusions: In unfamiliar conversation partners, better rhythm perception abilities were indicative of increased conversational quality mediated by higher levels of speaking rate entrainment. These results support theoretical postulations specifying rhythm perception abilities as a component of acoustic-prosodic entrainment, which, in turn, facilitates conversational success. Knowledge of this relationship contributes to the development of a causal framework for considering a mechanism by which rhythm perception deficits in clinical populations may impact conversational success.

Abstract:The idea that external rhythms synchronize attention cross-modally has attracted much interest and scientific inquiry. Yet, whether associated attentional modulations are indeed rhythmical in that they spring from and map onto an underlying meter has not been clearly established. Here we tested this idea while addressing the shortcomings of previous work associated with confounding (i) metricality and regularity, (ii) rhythmic and temporal expectations or (iii) global and local temporal effects. We designed sound sequences that varied orthogonally (high/low) in metricality and regularity and presented them as task-irrelevant auditory background in four separate blocks. The participants' task was to detect rare visual targets occurring at a silent metrically aligned or misaligned temporal position. We found that target timing was irrelevant for reaction times and visual event-related potentials. High background regularity and to a lesser extent metricality facilitated target processing across metrically aligned and misaligned positions. Additionally, high regularity modulated auditory background frequencies in the EEG recorded over occipital cortex. We conclude that external rhythms, rather than synchronizing attention cross-modally, confer general, nontemporal benefits. Their predictability conserves processing resources that then benefit stimulus representations in other modalities.

Examining the Neural Markers of Speech Rhythm in Silent Reading Using Mass Univariate Statistics of EEG Single Trials

Abstract:Background/Objectives: The Implicit Prosody Hypothesis (IPH) posits that individuals generate internal prosodic representations during silent reading, mirroring those produced in spoken language. While converging behavioral evidence supports the IPH, the underlying neurocognitive mechanisms remain largely unknown. Therefore, this study investigated the neurophysiological markers of sensitivity to speech rhythm cues during silent word reading. Methods: EEGs were recorded while participants silently read four-word sequences, each composed of either trochaic words (stressed on the first syllable) or iambic words (stressed on the second syllable). Each sequence was followed by a target word that was either metrically congruent or incongruent with the preceding rhythmic pattern. To investigate the effects of metrical expectancy and lexical stress type, we examined single-trial event-related potentials (ERPs) and time–frequency representations (TFRs) time-locked to target words. Results: The results showed significant differences based on the stress pattern expectancy and type. Specifically, words that carried unexpected stress elicited larger ERP negativities between 240 and 628 ms after the word onset. Furthermore, different frequency bands were sensitive to distinct aspects of the rhythmic structure in language. Alpha activity tracked the rhythmic expectations, and theta and beta activities were sensitive to both the expected rhythms and specific locations of the stressed syllables. Conclusions: The findings clarify neurocognitive mechanisms of phonological and lexical mental representations during silent reading using a conservative data-driven approach. Similarity with neural response patterns previously reported for spoken language contexts suggests shared neural networks for implicit and explicit speech rhythm processing, further supporting the IPH and emphasizing the centrality of prosody in reading.

Abstract:Four unrelated examples of partial deletion of the long arm of chromosome No. 18 have been briefly reported by us (Lancet ii: 641 [1966]). These patients have now been studied in detail.The typical features of this syndrome are mental retardation, short stature, impaired hearing with atretic or narrow ear canals, prominent antihelix, mild microcephaly, typical facies manifested by prominent forehead—perioral areas and deep set eyes, proximal implantation of the thumbs, increased number of whorl fingerprint patterns, hypotonia, vertical tali, fundoscopic anomalies and asymptomatic congenital heart anomalies.Relatives of three of the patients had normal chromosomes. The father and two siblings of the fourth patient had one metacentric No. 18, interpreted as a pericentric inversion. The deletion in this last patient probably arose by a crossover in the father between the metacentric and the normal No. 18 (‘aneusomy by recombination’).These four patients represent partial monosomy No. 18 but nonetheless the findings are not obviously the antithesis of the trisomy 18 syndrome.The retardation and morbidity associated with this chromosome disorder are less severe than those found with the usual autosomal trisomies. Since survival does not seem to be affected by this disorder, these patients will likely be found among older children. (SPR)
Attention is Required for Knowledge-Based Sequential Grouping: Insights from the Integration of Syllables into Words.

Abstract:How the brain groups sequential sensory events into chunks is a fundamental question in cognitive neuroscience. This study investigates whether top-down attention or specific tasks are required for the brain to apply lexical knowledge to group syllables into words. Neural responses tracking the syllabic and word rhythms of a rhythmic speech sequence were concurrently monitored using electroencephalography (EEG). The participants performed different tasks, attending to either the rhythmic speech sequence or a distractor, which was another speech stream or a nonlinguistic auditory/visual stimulus. Attention to speech, but not a lexical-meaning-related task, was required for reliable neural tracking of words, even when the distractor was a nonlinguistic stimulus presented cross-modally. Neural tracking of syllables, however, was reliably observed in all tested conditions. These results strongly suggest that neural encoding of individual auditory events (i.e., syllables) is automatic, while knowledge-based construction of temporal chunks (i.e., words) crucially relies on top-down attention.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Why we cannot understand speech when not paying attention is an old question in psychology and cognitive neuroscience. Speech processing is a complex process that involves multiple stages, e.g., hearing and analyzing the speech sound, recognizing words, and combining words into phrases and sentences. The current study investigates which speech-processing stage is blocked when we do not listen carefully. We show that the brain can reliably encode syllables, basic units of speech sounds, even when we do not pay attention. Nevertheless, when distracted, the brain cannot group syllables into multisyllabic words, which are basic units for speech meaning. Therefore, the process of converting speech sound into meaning crucially relies on attention.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an epizootic viral disease of sheep that can be transmitted from sheep to humans, particularly by contact with aborted fetuses. A capripoxvirus (CPV) recombinant virus (rKS1/RVFV) was developed, which expressed the Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) Gn and Gc glycoproteins. These expressed glycoproteins had the correct size and reacted with monoclonal antibodies (MAb) to native glycoproteins. Mice vaccinated with rKS1/RVFV were protected against RVFV challenge. Sheep vaccinated with rKS1/RVFV twice developed neutralizing antibodies and were significantly protected against RVFV and sheep poxvirus challenge. These findings further document the value of CPV recombinants as ruminant vaccine vectors and support the inclusion of RVFV genes encoding glycoproteins in multivalent recombinant vaccines to be used where RVF occurs.
An Evolutionary Approach to International Environmental Agreements with Full Participation

Abstract:Under two often employed imitation mechanisms, we show that an international environmental agreement with full participation can be the unique stochastically stable equilibrium if countries' efficiency of emission reductions is high. By contrast, if the efficiency of emission reduction is low, no agreement among countries to reduce emissions will be the unique stochastically stable equilibrium. We provide the convergence rates to these two equilibria as well. In addition, it is demonstrated that the equilibria are affected by different imitation rules and model's parameters, such as marginal benefits and costs of emission reduction and the number of participating countries.

Abstract:Experiments were designed to determine whether or not endogenous endothelin (ET) contributes to endothelium-independent anoxic contractions of canine coronary arteries. Rings without endothelium were suspended for isometric tension recording in conventional organ chambers filled with modified Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate solution. Anoxia (PO2 < or = 1 mm Hg) caused reproducible contractions. The anoxic contractions were augmented by exogenous endothelin-1 (ET-1). At 10(-6) M and 10(-5) M, BQ-123 (a specific endothelin antagonist) inhibited both the facilitatory effect of ET-1 and the anoxic contractions. At these concentrations BQ-123 caused a parallel shift to the right of the concentration-response curve to ET-1 and a small but significant depression of the response to norepinephrine, without affecting the maximal response to the catecholamine. BQ-123 did not significantly affect the concentration-response curve to Ca2+ in depolarizing solution (60 mM KCl). Monoclonal antibodies against ET-1 (70 micrograms/ml) inhibited the response to exogenous ET-1 and abolished the facilitating effect of the peptide, but did not affect the anoxic contractions. These results suggest that ET-1 contributes to anoxic contractions in canine coronary arteries without endothelium. The receptor involved belongs to the ETA-subtype and is not accessible to monoclonal antibodies.
Rhythm-controllable Attention with High Robustness for Long Sentence Speech Synthesis

Abstract:Regressive Text-to-Speech (TTS) system utilizes attention mechanism to generate alignment between text and acoustic feature sequence. Alignment determines synthesis robustness (e.g, the occurence of skipping, repeating, and collapse) and rhythm via duration control. However, current attention algorithms used in speech synthesis cannot control rhythm using external duration information to generate natural speech while ensuring robustness. In this study, we propose Rhythm-controllable Attention (RC-Attention) based on Tracotron2, which improves robustness and naturalness simultaneously. Proposed attention adopts a trainable scalar learned from four kinds of information to achieve rhythm control, which makes rhythm control more robust and natural, even when synthesized sentences are extremely longer than training corpus. We use word errors counting and AB preference test to measure robustness of proposed method and naturalness of synthesized speech, respectively. Results shows that RC-Attention has the lowest word error rate of nearly 0.6%, compared with 11.8% for baseline system. Moreover, nearly 60% subjects prefer to the speech synthesized with RC-Attention to that with Forward Attention, because the former has more natural rhythm.

Abstract:To recognize speech in a noisy auditory scene, listeners need to perceptually segregate the target talker's voice from other competing sounds (stream segregation). A number of studies have suggested that the attentional demands placed on listeners increase as the acoustic properties and informational content of the competing sounds become more similar to that of the target voice. Hence we would expect attentional demands to be considerably greater when speech is masked by speech than when it is masked by steady-state noise. To investigate the role of attentional mechanisms in the unmasking of speech sounds, event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded to a syllable masked by noise or competing speech under both active (the participant was asked to respond when the syllable was presented) or passive (no response was required) listening conditions. The results showed that the long-latency auditory response to a syllable (/bi/), presented at different signal-to-masker ratios (SMRs), was similar in both passive and active listening conditions, when the masker was a steady-state noise. In contrast, a switch from the passive listening condition to the active one, when the masker was two-talker speech, significantly enhanced the ERPs to the syllable. These results support the hypothesis that the need to engage attentional mechanisms in aid of scene analysis increases as the similarity (both acoustic and informational) between the target speech and the competing background sounds increases.
