Abstract:In this study, a novel competition-type electrochemiluminescent (ECL) immunosensor for detecting diclofenac (DCF) was fabricated with graphene oxide coupled graphite-like carbon nitride (GO-g-C3N4) as signal probe for the first time. The ECL intensity of carboxylated g-C3N4 was significantly enhanced after being combined with graphene oxide (GO) which exhibited excellent charge-transport property. The sensing platform was constructed by multiwalled carbon nanotubes and gold nanoparticles (MWCNTs-AuNPs), which not only provided an effective matrix for immobilizing a large amount of coating antigen but also facilitated the electronic transmission rate to enhance the ECL intensity. Based on the synergistic effect of GO-g-C3N4 and MWCNTs-AuNPs composite, the proposed sensor showed high sensitivity, good stability, and wide linearity for the detection of DCF in the range of 0.005–1000ngmL−1 with a detection limit of 1.7pgmL−1. Furthermore, the developed immunoassay has been applied to real samples with satisfactory results. Therefore, this work provided a promising method for the detection of DCF and other small molecular compounds in the future.

Abstract:Sensitive and simultaneous detection of dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) by a sensor based on in-situ electrodeposited Au-Pt bimetallic nano-clusters decorated on graphene oxide (GO)-electrochemically reduced GO (ERGO) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was presented. The synergistic electrocatalytic effect of Au-Pt bimetallic nano-clusters and GO-REGO was investigated. First, the comparisons of electrochemical properties for GO, GO-REGO, Au (or Pt) nanoparticles, Au-Pt bimetallic nano-clusters decorated on GO-REGO were studied in detail. Second, electrochemical parameters of DA and UA were evaluated. It was observed that for the novel Au-Pt/GO-ERGO nanocomposites, GO-ERGO could provide much wider separation of the oxidation peak potentials of DA and UA, while Au-Pt bimetallic nano-clusters could speed up the electron transfer and enhance the electro-active areas. The linear range of detecting DA was from 6.82 x 10(-8) to 4.98 x 10(-2) M and limit of detection (LOD) was 2.07 x 10(-8) M (S/N = 3). The linear range of detecting UA was from 1.25 x 10(-7) to 8.28 x 10(-2) M and LOD was 4.07 x 10(-8) M (S/N = 3). The sensor was applied for the detection of DA and UA in human serum with good results. The sensor suggested that 3D metal-GO nanocomposites were superior materials for the fabrication of novel electrochemical sensors. (C) 2015 Elsevier By. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Hybrid nanocomposites made from metal tungstate and stacked graphene nano-sheets have attracted the curiosity of researchers due to their high conductivity, strong electrochemical activity, and quick electrochemical transfer response. These properties prompted us to employ co-precipitation and sonochemical approaches to create low-cost iron tungstate (FeWO 4 ) based on reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The synthesized FeWO 4 /rGO nanocomposites (NCs) were evaluated for their physicochemical properties and structural and morphological aspects. A modified electrode composed of FeWO 4 /rGO NCs was utilized to detect epinephrine (Eph), a significant neurotransmitter and hormone associated with various human activities. The electrochemical behavior of Eph was quantified using cyclic voltammetry, and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) on a FeWO 4 /rGO NCs modified electrode (DPV). According to the DPV study, Eph concentration was linearly distributed from 0.05 to 990.5 μM. For determining Eph, the sensor had a detection limit of 0.0073 μM and a sensitivity of 5.857 μAμM -1 cm -2 . The sensor displayed excellent recovery results for the determination of Eph in the human urine and with epinephrine pills real samples, revealing its excellent practicality.

Abstract:Diclofenac (DCF) is among the pharmaceutical compounds of concern based on its nocuousness in environment. In this work, a novel electrochemiluminescent (ECL) immunosensor for detecting DCF was constructed using poly(etherimide)-poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene): poly(styrene sulfonate) functionalized graphene oxide and CdSe@CdS quantum dots (QDs-PEI-GO/PEDOT) as bioreceptor for conjugating DCF antibody to magnify signal. It is worth noting that this is the first time GO/PEDOT has been applied to ECL sensor field. Compared with GO, GO/PEDOT exhibited a higher conductivity and more stable chemical property, indicating that the proposed immunosensor would possess stronger and more stable luminescence performance. In addition, the electrode was modified with gold nanorods (AuNRs) which increase the load capacity of DCF coating antigen through Au-N bond. Competitive immunoassay method was chosen for structuring immunosensor where polyclonal antibody (pAb) against DCF exhibited high-affinity recognition of DCF, which greatly improved the sensitively and selectivity of sensor. Consequently, the proposed immunosensor gratified in DCF detection with low detection limit (LODs) of 0.33 pg mL(-1) (S/N = 3), and displayed high stability and sensitivity, which initiated a new route for DCF determining.

Abstract:Non-enzymatic dopamine (DA) sensors are important in diagnosing and treating human diseases. However, non-enzymatic sensors frequently encounter interference from other substances, posing a challenge of poor selectivity for such sensors. Herein, we prepared tungsten trioxide nanoparticles (WO3 NPs) via a simple hydrothermal method and immobilized them onto a cuprous oxide (Cu2O) film. The results demonstrate that WO3 NPs offer improved selectivity, thus avoiding interference from other substances. The DA sensor based on the Cu2O film modified with WO3 NPs exhibits excellent DA detection performance, with a wide linear range of to 10 mM, a low limit of detection of , and good selectivity against common interfering substances. This non-enzymatic DA sensor features a simple structure, easy fabrication, small size, and suitability for mass production.

Abstract:Acetaminophen (ACP), a common analgesic and antipyretic medication, can harm the liver when overdosed and its metabolites can contaminate the environment, so it is necessary to monitor the concentration precisely and reliably. In this work, we successfully synthesized cerium oxide/nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (CeO2/N-rGO) composite nanomaterials using a one-step hydrothermal method. Using composite nanomaterials, we created an electrochemical sensing detection platform for ACP detection. The synthesized materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The constructed electrochemical sensor exhibits good ACP detection ability under the synergistic effect of CeO2 and N-rGO. Under optimal experimental conditions, the sensor displayed a linear range for the detection of ACP of 1~200 μM and the lowest detection limit of 0.79 μM, exhibiting outstanding selectivity, stability, and repeatability. Furthermore, the sensor was effectively applied to detect ACP in tap water samples, which offers a wide range of possible applications in actual sample testing.

Abstract:Engineered nanomaterials that exhibit enzyme-like activity are highly sought after for designing enzymeless sensors, which circumvent the need for costly enzymes. In this context, we synthesized tungsten oxide (WO 3 ) nanostructures via the hydrothermal method and characterized them using various techniques. A slurry of the resulting WO 3 nanostructure was prepared and drop-cast onto a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) to construct an enzymeless sensor. The electrochemical characteristics of the WO 3 /SPCE sensor were evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). An optimized WO 3 /SPCE sensor was electrochemically evaluated for ascorbic acid (AA) detection at varying concentrations employing CV analysis. The CV response exhibited a significant oxidation peak for AA, which gradually intensified with an increment in the AA concentration. The sensor demonstrated a linear response up to 1000 μM, high sensitivity (5.62 μA/μM-cm 2 ), and a detection limit (DL) of 0.6 μM. Moreover, the engineered enzymeless WO 3 /SPCE sensor displayed excellent selectivity, stability (94.5 % over 6 weeks), and fabrication reproducibility (RSD of 9.2 % across 7 devices). Thus, this WO 3 nanostructure proves to be a promising candidate for the large-scale, cost-effective sensor development for AA detection and holds potential for the fabrication of enzyme-based biosensors.

Abstract:Conductive viscous hydrogel has received much research attention in the field of flexible wearable sensors because of its conductivity, adhesion, softness and biocompatibility. However, the expandability, low tissue adhesion and leakage of conductive components of traditional conductive adhesives limit their practical wet application. Hence, based on the redox and adhesive chemistry of polyphenols (TA), a tough double-layer hydrogel sensor (CAT/HArGO-Ag) with low swelling and wet-tissue adhesion was synthesized in an aqueous environment. The upper layer gel (HArGO-Ag) was polymerized by 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), acrylic acid (AA) and graphene oxide/silver nanoparticles composite (GO-Ag), and then GO was transformed into reduced graphene oxide (rGO) by oxidation and reduction of TA, and the toughness of HArGO-Ag increased by 60.2 % (from 1.18 ± 0.16 MJ/m 3 to 1.89 ± 0.21 MJ/m 3 ). Subsequently, the prepolymer solution of chitosan/acrylic acid/tannic acid (CS/AA/TA) was cured on the surface of the active ester modified HArGO-Ag-NHS gel to obtain CAT/HArGO-Ag, and its interfacial toughness on wet pigskin reached 317.41 J/m 2 , which could effectively close the femoral artery trauma in rats. Owing to the advantages of the phase separation clusters in HArGO-Ag and the networking of CS, CAT/HArGO-Ag showed low swelling (only 0.11). In addition, the experimental results showed that the CAT/HArGO-Ag composite patch had good antioxidant capacity, antibacterial property and biosafety. Finally, the sensitivity (GF) at 80 ∼ 120 % strain was as high as 125.01, and it could also detect sweat pH based on surface enhanced Raman scattering (SRES). Therefore, multifunctional sensing CAT/HArGO-Ag sensor would be expected to be an ideal material for biological non-invasive monitoring and medical care.

Abstract:In this study, we have prepared anatase titanium (IV) oxide warped reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites (TiO2-rGO NC) using ultrasonic methodology. The morphology of the TiO2-rGO NC was studied using FESEM and TEM. In addition, XRD, Raman, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and XPS are used to analyze the crystallinity and chemical composition of the TiO2-rGO NC. We have also investigated the electrochemical behavior of the as-prepared NCs with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and different pulse voltammetry techniques (DPV). The TiO2-rGO NC modified electrode shows the lower charge transfer resistance (R ct ) of 62.87 Ω. Next, the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with sonochemically prepared TiO2-rGO NC and used to determine the electrocatalytic reduction of nitrofurazone (NTF). Thus, the proposed sensor established the wider covering range (WCR) of 0.01 to 380 µM and an excellent detection limit of 2.28 nM. Finally, the TiO2-rGO NC/GCE was applied to determine the NTF in real samples, including crayfish and human blood serum samples, which acquired good found and recovery values.

Abstract:In this study, we report a straightforward method for synthesizing semi-cubical nanostructures of tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) loaded with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) via a hydrothermal approach. Furthermore, the systematic investigations were made towards the improved gas sensing capabilities of these nanostructures for acetone. The use of semi-cubical rGO/WO 3 nanostructures demonstrate the provision of efficient gas diffusion routes via a meticulously arranged mesoporous framework. Hence, it leads to a significant improvement in the sensing response towards acetone. The analysis of the sensing capabilities demonstrates that the response of the sensor is influenced by variations in operating temperature and gas concentration. It is seen that the inclusion of rGO not only enhances the sensing response but also gives quick response and recovery, which are measured to be 12 and 33 s, respectively. The WO 3 sensor loaded with 0.1 wt% rGO demonstrates a discerning reaction to acetone, exhibiting a high response of 93.60% than that of the unmodified WO 3 sensor (76.30%). The gas sensing properties are explained through the role of rGO and the structural and morphological properties of the developed nanostructures.

Highly stable scalable production of porous graphene-polydopamine nanocomposites for drug molecule sensing

Abstract:As atenolol overdosing can lead to severe health complications, the rapid detection of atenolol intake in point-of-care settings is highly desirable. The recent advancement of redox analytical methodologies has facilitated the efficacious quantification of these compounds for drug analysis, but their performance still presents challenges in practical applications. This study addresses these challenges by controlling the electropolymerization of polydopamine (PDA) on highly porous laser-induced graphene (LIG) electrodes with enhanced electrochemical redox activity for the detection of drug molecules such as atenolol, with minimized interference with the other active substances to induce variation of electrochemical behavior. The enhanced sensitivity of atenolol is attributed to the superhydrophilicity and increased number of active surface sites and -NH2 groups in the PDA polymer through a controlled polymerization process. Moreover, the simulation results further reveal that highly sensitive sensing of atenolol molecules relies on optimal adsorption of the atenolol molecule on dopamine or dopaminequinone structural units. The resulting sensors with high repeatability and reproducibility can achieve a low detection limit of 80 μM and a sensitivity of 0.020 ± 0.04 μA/μM within a linear range from 100 to 800 μM. The materials and surface chemistry in the electrode design based on highly porous LIG provide insights into the integration and application of future scalable and cost-effective electrochemical sensors for use in point-of-care or in-field applications.
Flexible electrical aptasensor using dielectrophoretic assembly of graphene oxide and its subsequent reduction for cardiac biomarker detection

Abstract:Cardiac troponin T (cTnT) is considered a clinical standard for its high specificity and sensitivity when diagnosing acute myocardial infarction; however, most studies on the electrical sensors of cardiac troponin biomarkers have focused on cTnI rather than cTnT. This study presents label-free, low-cost, transparent, and flexible aptamer-based immunosensors for the electrical detection of cTnT using reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets. GO was first deposited by AC dielectrophoresis between two predefined source and drain electrodes on a 3-aminopropyltriethoxylsilane-modified polyethylene terephthalate substrate. The GO was then reduced using hydrazine vapour without damaging the substrate, resulting in uniform, controlled, and stable deposition of rGO sheets, and demonstrating more stability than those directly deposited by dielectrophoresis. Amine-modified single-strand DNA aptamers against cTnT were immobilized onto the rGO channels. The relative resistance change of this sensor owing to the attachment of cTnT was quantified as the cTnT concentration decreased from 10 ng/mL to 1 pg/mL in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and 10-fold diluted human serum in PBS, with the limits of detection being 1.2 pg/mL and 1.7 pg/mL, respectively, which is sufficiently sensitive for clinical applications. High-yield and rapid fabrication of the present rGO sensors will have significant influences on scaled-up fabrication of graphene-based sensors.
Highly Sensitive Wearable Sensor Based on (001)‐Orientated TiO2 for Real‐Time Electrochemical Detection of Dopamine, Tyrosine, and Paracetamol

Abstract:The free‐standing titanium dioxide film can be transferred to carbon cloth (TiO2‐CC) to form a highly sensitive flexible electrochemical sensor. The TiO2‐CC electrochemical sensor can be integrated into a smart diaper to detect the trace amount of dopamine or an integrated skin‐interfaced patch with microfluidic sampling and wireless transmission units for real‐time detection of the sweat tyrosine and paracetamol concentration. The concentration of dopamine (DA) and tyrosine (Tyr) reflects the condition of patients with Parkinson's disease, whereas moderate paracetamol (PA) can help relieve their pain. Therefore, real‐time measurements of these bioanalytes have important clinical implications for patients with Parkinson's disease. However, previous sensors suffer from either limited sensitivity or complex fabrication and integration processes. This work introduces a simple and cost‐effective method to prepare high‐quality, flexible titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin films with highly reactive (001)‐facets. The as‐fabricated TiO2 film supported by a carbon cloth electrode (i.e., TiO2–CC) allows excellent electrochemical specificity and sensitivity to DA (1.390 μA μM−1 cm−2), Tyr (0.126 μA μM−1 cm−2), and PA (0.0841 μA μM−1 cm−2). More importantly, accurate DA concentration in varied pH conditions can be obtained by decoupling them within a single differential pulse voltammetry measurement without additional sensing units. The TiO2–CC electrochemical sensor can be integrated into a smart diaper to detect the trace amount of DA or an integrated skin‐interfaced patch with microfluidic sampling and wireless transmission units for real‐time detection of the sweat Try and PA concentration. The wearable sensor based on TiO2–CC prepared by facile manufacturing methods holds great potential in the daily health monitoring and care of patients with neurological disorders.

Abstract:Emerging technology to the new era of sensors to detect and quantify neurological reaction-based research has been demanded towards the development of neurotransmitter, dopamine (DA) sensors. In recent decades, electrochemical sensors offer rapid and sensitive detection of DA, however the presence of interfering compounds such as uric acid (UA), and ascorbic acid (AA) poses a great threat for the development of DA sensors. Additionally, reusing the traditional methods leads to challenges like prolonged preparation and expensive instruments. This research work offers nanohybrid two-dimensional (2D) paper-like graphene oxide (GO) and three-dimensional (3D) cerium oxide nanosphere (CeONS) heterostructure composite (G-CeONS) via stoichiometric synthesis for non-enzymatic detection of DA oxidation in the presence of other complex biological compounds. The constructed G-CeONS nanohybrid composite enables enhanced selectivity and sensitivity towards DA detection through its interfacial engineering. Heterostructure formation of 2D nanosheet draped over 3D nanospheres exhibits a wider linear range of concentrations (100-30800 nM) with the low detection limit of 20.98 nM. Further investigation of real time performance on human saliva, and DA injections exhibited prominent results. In addition, the synergetic effect of G-CeONS improves the DA detection accuracy, and reliability towards enabling transformational neurochemical and medicinal applications.

Furthermore, progesterone (PGT) is a preferred marker for various biological problems like pregnancy problem, mood swings, anxiety, depression, nervousness and body pain. Therefore, its selective and sensitive determination in various biological fluids is beneficial for the evaluation of malformation problems. We describe the fabrication of an amperometric and non-enzymatic biosensor based on WO3 NBs@GR nanocomposite modified electrode for nanomolar detection of PGT. The results showed that the nanocomposite modified electrode exhibit well-defined electro-oxidation peak compared to bare and control electrodes, demonstrating the superior electrocatalytic ability and performances. The fabricated modified sensor was facilitates the analysis of PGT in the concentration ranges of 0.025-1792.5 µM with a low detection limit of 4.28 nM. Further, the as-prepared WO3 NBs@GR electrode has been applied to determination of PGT in human blood samples with outstanding recovery results and more importantly, the facile and environment-friendly sonochemical construction strategy extended here, may be open a cost-effective way for setting up the nanocomposites based (bio) sensing platform.

Abstract:Many diseases are closely related to abnormal concentrations of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), and uric acid (UA). Therefore, the detection of these small molecules is significant for monitoring life metabolism and healthy states. Electrochemical detection has been widely used to detect small molecules due to its good selectivity, high sensitivity, and good economics. Fabrication and application are two sides of the coin, and we cannot give up one for the other. Graphene (GN) is a very suitable material for electrochemical sensing due to its excellent catalytic performance and large specific surface area. It possesses many excellent properties but cannot hold itself alone due to its nanoscale thickness. Herein, we have fabricated three-dimensional (3D) GN nanosheets (GNSs) on flexible carbon cloth (CC) by thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The GNSs/CC can successfully detect AA, DA, and UA simultaneously. We find that these GNSs/CC sensors show good performance with 7 h CVD modification. The linear ranges of AA, DA, and UA are 0.02–0.1, 0.0005–0.02, and 0.0005–0.02 mM, respectively. The detection sensitivity rates of AA, DA, and UA are 5,470, 60,500, and 64,000 μA mM −1 cm −2 , respectively. Our GNSs/CC flexible sensors can be successfully applied in the human serum for UA detection. The result matches with commercial sensors very well.

Abstract:Here we report on a selective and sensitive graphene-oxide-based electrochemical sensor for the detection of naproxen. The effects of doping and oxygen content of various graphene oxide (GO)-based nanomaterials on their respective electrochemical behaviors were investigated and rationalized. The synthesized GO and GO-based nanomaterials were characterized using a field-emission scanning electron microscope, while the associated amounts of the dopant heteroatoms and oxygen were quantified using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electrochemical behaviors of the GO, fluorine-doped graphene oxide (F-GO), boron-doped partially reduced graphene oxide (B-rGO), nitrogen-doped partially reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO), and thermally reduced graphene oxide (TrGO) were studied and compared via cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). It was found that GO exhibited the highest signal for the electrochemical detection of naproxen when compared with the other GO-based nanomaterials explored in the present study. This was primarily due to the presence of the additional oxygen content in the GO, which facilitated the catalytic oxidation of naproxen. The GO-based electrochemical sensor exhibited a wide linear range (10 μM–1 mM), a high sensitivity (0.60 μAμM−1cm−2), high selectivity and a strong anti-interference capacity over potential interfering species that may exist in a biological system for the detection of naproxen. In addition, the proposed GO-based electrochemical sensor was tested using actual pharmaceutical naproxen tablets without pretreatments, further demonstrating excellent sensitivity and selectivity. Moreover, this study provided insights into the participatory catalytic roles of the oxygen functional groups of the GO-based nanomaterials toward the electrochemical oxidation and sensing of naproxen.

Abstract:In this work, the metallic silver and non-metallic nitrogen co-doped reduced graphene oxide (Ag-N-RGO) was first synthesized by a simple and cost-effective strategy, and then a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was formed in situ at the surface of the prepared composite via electropolymerization of o-phenylenediamine in the presence of salbutamol as the template molecule. The electrochemical characterizations demonstrate that the bifunctional graphene-based composite shows improved catalytic performance than that of pristine graphene doped with one-component or none. The MIP sensor based on Ag-N-RGO owns high porous surface structure, resulting in the increased current response and enhanced recognition capacity than that of non-imprinted sensor. The outstanding performance of the developed sensor derives from the combined advantages of Ag-N-RGO with effective catalytic property and MIP with excellent selectivity. Under the optimal conditions, the electrochemical response of the developed sensor is linearly proportional to the concentration of salbutamol in the range of 0.03–20.00µmolL−1 with a low detection limit of 7 nmol L−1. The designed sensor has exhibited the multiple advantages such as low cost, simple manufacture, convenient use, excellent selectivity and good reproducibility. Finally, the proposed method has been extended for the determinations of salbutamol in human urine and pork samples, and the satisfactory recoveries between 98.9–105.3% are achieved.

Abstract:Carbon paper-based electrochemical sensors offer the possibility of long-term in vivo monitoring of the biomarkers due to their chemical stability and porous structure. However, the serious self-staking and aggregation of the carbon materials seriously block the diffusion of target biomolecules and limit the sensitivity and selectivity of the device. Here we report a controllable interfacial coupling strategy in which a composite paper electrode made by electrostatic self-assembling reduced graphene oxide (rGO) on carbon fiber (CF) modified with cationic polyacrylamide to avoid the self-stacking in scalable wet papermaking and thus increased accessible electrochemically active surface area and accelerate the diffusion of biomarkers. The resulting composite paper shows improved stability, high selectivity, long-durability, and excellent sensitivity in the electrochemical detection of biomarkers such as ascorbic acid , dopamine, and uric acid. Our approach, which combines mature industrial paper technology with interface engineering and electrochemical reduction, offers a potential avenue for low-cost and scalable implantable electrodes for timely and long-term monitoring in the surgical and clinical applications.
