Abstract:CdS/ZnO nano heterojunction was synthesized and applied in piezocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) under ultrasonic vibration. The optimal CdS/ZnO composite with a CdS content of 35% presented the highest RhB degradation efficiency (98.8%) in 90 min. The degradation rate reached 4.02 h-1, which was 5.6 and 2.8 times higher than that of CdS and ZnO, respectively. In addition, CdS/ZnO showed high stability in the piezocatalytic reaction. The as-prepared CdS/ZnO piezocatalysts were characterized by multiple techniques to reveal the nature behind the enhanced catalytic activity. Results indicated that CdS nanoparticles were tightly loaded onto the surface of ZnO. The piezoelectric properties of the CdS/ZnO composites were the origin of their piezocatalytic behavior. The suitable band potentials of CdS and ZnO triggered the formation of a heterojunction structure, thereby driving the second distribution of the piezo-induced charge carriers. Therefore, the separation efficiency of charge carriers and the piezocatalytic performance was greatly elevated. The high piezocatalytic activity and stability indicated that CdS/ZnO may have wide application potential in the piezocatalytic degradation of organic dyes by using ultrasonic vibration energy.

Abstract:This study designed and prepared a new piezoelectric catalytic nanomaterial, Bi2WO6/ZnSnO3, and applied it in piezocatalytic water purification. Results indicated that the composite had superior piezocatalytic efficiency and stability in rhodamine B (RhB) degradation under ultrasonic vibration. The Bi2WO6/ZnSnO3 sample with 10% Bi2WO6 had the optimum activity with a degradation rate of 2.15 h-1, which was 7.4 and 11.3 times that of ZnSnO3 and Bi2WO6, respectively. Various characterizations were conducted to study the morphology, structure, and piezoelectric properties of the Bi2WO6/ZnSnO3 composites and reveal the reasons for their improved piezocatalytic performance. Results showed that ZnSnO3 cubes were dispersed throughout the surface of Bi2WO6 nanosheets, which enhanced the specific surface area and facilitated the piezocatalytic reaction. Additionally, type-II heterojunction structures formed at the contact interface of Bi2WO6 and ZnSnO3, driving the migration of piezoelectric-induced electrons and holes. Accordingly, the separation efficiency of charge carriers improved, and the piezoelectric catalytic activity was significantly enhanced. This study may provide a potential composite catalyst and a promising idea for the design of highly efficient piezoelectric catalyst.

Abstract:Piezoelectric nanomaterials have been utilized to realize effective charge separation for degrading organic pollutants in water under the action of mechanical vibrations. However, in particulate form, the nanostructured piezoelectric catalysts can flow into the aqueous pollutant and limit its recyclability and reuse. Here, we report a new method of using a barium titanate (BaTiO3, BTO)–polydimethylsiloxane composite porous foam catalyst to address the challenge of secondary pollution and reusable limits. Piezo-catalytic dye degradation activity of the porous foam can degrade a Rhodamine B (RhB) dye solution by ∼94%, and the composite material exhibits excellent stability after repeated decomposition of 12 cycles. It is suggested that under ultrasonic vibrations, the piezoelectric BTO materials create separated electron–hole pairs that react with hydroxyl ions and oxygen molecules to generate superoxide (•O2–) and hydroxyl (•OH) radicals for organic dye degradation. The degradation efficiency of RhB is associated with the piezoelectric constant, the specific surface area, and the shape of the material.

Abstract:Privileged photocatalysts combine semiconductor physics, materials science, chemical engineering and environmental science to convert abundant photonic energy into chemical energy. A common limitation of photocatalysts at-scale processes is their insufficient light absorption capability and charge carrier management. Additionally, the potential secondary pollution and difficulties in effective recovery associated with the dispersion of traditional powder catalysts in the water further limit their industrial application. To address these issues, strong electric fields generated by the piezoelectric effect were introduced to reduce the scattering probability of photoinduced carriers during their migration, thereby significantly enhancing photocatalytic efficiency. Specifically, we have developed a PDMS-loaded solid solution 0.7 BiFeO 3 -0.3 BaTiO 3 (BFBT) hybrid catalyst that achieves a degradation rate of 99% for Rhodamine B solution within 60 min under the synergistic action of low-frequency vibration and light irradiation. The degradation kinetic constant was 0.080 min −1 , representing a piezoelectric enhancement of photocatalysis by 148%. The internal electric field is excited by periodic mechanical stress, which finely regulates the interface energy band structure, promotes the effective separation of photoinduced carriers and enhances the generation of reactive oxygen species, thereby strengthening the chemical reaction kinetics and achieving efficient degradation of pollutants.

Abstract:This work was designed to show the application of BiVO4/Bi4V2O10 nanostructured heterojunction composites in piezocatalysis. The BiVO4/Bi4V2O10 composites prepared by a solvothermal method realized dye degradation via utilizing vibration energy. Various factors affecting the piezocatalytic property of the composite catalyst were investigated. The highest rhodamine B (RhB) degradation rate of 99.3% was achieved after 45 min of ultrasonic vibration on the BiVO4/Bi4V2O10 composite catalyst prepared with 3 h of solvothermal time at 140 °C. The structure, morphology, and optical property of the as-prepared catalysts were extensively characterized. The good piezocatalytic activity of the composite was ascribed to the hierarchical morphology of the nanoporous sphere coated with nanoflakes, and the formation of a heterojunction structure between BiVO4 and Bi4V2O10, which effectively separated the ultrasound-induced electron–hole pairs and suppressed their recombination. Based on the band potentials of BiVO4 and Bi4V2O10, a plausible mechanism for piezocatalytic dye degradation was proposed, which was confirmed by the quenching effect of various radical scavengers. This work demonstrates the potential use of BiVO4/Bi4V2O10 nanocomposites in piezocatalytic applications and provides valuable insights into the design and preparation of piezocatalysts for water purification.

Abstract:Piezocatalytic technology represents an innovative form of advanced oxidation technology for degradation of organic pollutants. Piezoelectric catalysis technology combines electrochemistry and piezoelectric properties, and promotes charge transfer through a piezoelectric field, thus promoting catalytic reactions. This study employed a one-step microwave method to fabricate an α-Bi 2 O 3 /BiO 2 heterojunction with a narrow bandgap. This catalyst exhibited a high efficiency in the degradation of methyl orange dye, achieving a removal rate of 93% in 60 minutes, with a reaction rate constant of 0.0324 min −1 . The investigation of the catalytic mechanism demonstrates that the construction of the α-Bi 2 O 3 /BiO 2 heterojunction facilitates the separation of charge carriers, increases the degree of polarization, and consequently enhances the efficiency of piezoelectric catalytic degradation. This work opens the way for the design and development of high-performance piezoelectric catalysts.

Abstract:Between January and June 2013, nine stillborn bovine foetuses with congenital malformations from nine cattle herds located in Salamanca (central Spain) were detected. Necropsy was performed on two calves. Pathological lesions together with molecular genetics and serological results allowed a definitive diagnosis: first confirmation of Schmallenberg virus (SBV) infection in cattle in Spain. SBV was detected in different tissues and organic fluids in both animals including blood, suggesting a possible viraemia. The umbilical cord was also positive for the presence of SBV in both animals. The former tissue provides an easy to obtain sample and might be a sample of choice when necropsy is carried out in the field.

Abstract:Piezoelectric materials have recently demonstrated their potential applications in clean energy exploration and environmental remediation through triggering a number of catalytic reactions by harvesting waste vibrational energy in the environment. In this work, unique lead-free 0.7BiFeO3–0.3BaTiO3 (BF–BT) nanoparticles with tuned band structure were synthesized by the hydrothermal method for use as piezoelectric catalysts to generate hydrogen by splitting water; a high production rate of 1.322 mmol/g was achieved in 1 h, which is 10 times higher than the production rate of pure BiFeO3. Of particular interest, BF–BT particles attached to nickel mesh have the ability to degrade rhodamine B in flowing water, demonstrating their potential to treat polluted water by anchoring BF–BT in drains. Abstract:The treatment of organic pollutants in wastewater is becoming a great challenge for social development. Herein, a novel contact-piezoelectric bi-catalysis of a ZnO@ PVDF composite membrane was prepared by electrospinning technology. The obtained ZnO@PVDF composite membranes is superior to the pure PVDF membrane in decomposing methyl orange (MO) under ultrasonication at room temperature, which is mainly attributed to the synergy effect of the contact-electro-catalysis of dielectric PVDF, as well as the piezoelectric catalysis of tetrapodal ZnO and the β-phase of PVDF. The heterostructure of the piezoelectric-ZnO@dielectric-PVDF composite is beneficial in reducing the electron/hole pair recombination. As compared to the pure PVDF membrane, the catalytic degradation efficiency of the ZnO@PVDF composite membrane was improved by 444.23% under ultrasonication. Moreover, the reusability and stability of the composite membrane are comparable to those of the traditional powdered catalyst. This work offers a promising strategy for improving the pollutant degradation by combining contact-electro-catalysis with piezoelectric catalysis.

Abstract:In the recent years, piezocatalysis process is attracting extensive attention as an emerging technology to remove persistent organic pollutants. Its advantage is that it relies on mechanical energy and is independent of electricity and light source, unlike electrocatalysis or photocatalysis processes. In this research, 2H-MoS 2 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction materials were successfully fabricated via the hydrothermal method and utilized as piezocatalyst in the treatment of Rhodamine B. This material exhibited a highly efficient piezo-catalyst effect, with the piezo-response amplitudes of 78.8 mV, almost doubled compared to 39.8¬†mV of 2H-MoS 2 . The degradation of Rhodamine B by ultrasonic irradiation could reach 75.4% only after 5 s and then 94.9% in 60 s without light assistance. This ultra-rapid degradation rate is attributed to the electron‚Äďhole pairs and transfer of the charge-carriers on the surface of 2H-MoS 2 and g-C 3 N 4 via S-scheme heterojunction model, which was confirmed by density functional theory study. The piezo-catalytic ability of the material can still be improved for better treatment of other organic pollutants in aqueous environment.

Abstract:Piezoelectric materials have promising potential for converting mechanical energy into chemical energy (i.e. piezocatalysis) by coupling the piezotronic effect with electrochemical processes. Herein, piezocatalytic water splitting and degradation of organic pollutants have been realized in three few-layer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) (namely MoS2, WS2, and WSe2). We showed that the H-2 evolution rate reached 29.1, 15.4, and 11.3 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) for MoS2, WS2, and WSe2 nanosheets respectively, under mechanical force provided by ultrasonic vibration. Moreover, their piezocatalytic activities can be further promoted by loading with heavy metal (e.g. Pt and Au) nanoparticles. In addition, all the samples exhibited good piezocatalytic degradation efficiency and reusability toward different organic pollutants (e.g. tetracycline and Rhodamine B). We also provided a systematic investigation on the piezoelectricity by piezoresponse force microscopy and piezoelectric stress coefficients (e(11)) by first-principle calculations of these three studied compounds, which are accordant with the piezocatalytic results. The present work clearly demonstrates a high correlation between piezoelectricity and mechanical vibration induced catalytic reactions in few-layer TMDs and may provide insight into the mechanisms of piezocatalytic effect.
Highly efficient piezocatalytic degradation of organic dye over few-layer MoS 2 /carbon sponge composite boosted by mild mechanical stimuli

Abstract:Piezocatalysis is a burgeoning sustainable technology due to its attractive potential in solving environmental and resource issues with various mechanical energies. Herein, a high-performance freestanding composite piezocatalyst was synthesized by combining few-layer MoS 2 nanosheets with highly porous flexible carbonaceous matirx derived from melamine sponge (CMS), which can greatly harvest mild mechanical energies to trigger off piezoelectric effect for efficient dye degradation. Under mechanical stirring, the developed MoS 2 /CMS showed distinguished piezocatalytic degradation efficiency (99.8% within 10 min) for Rhodamine B (Rh B) dye solution. Besides, as a brick-shaped piezo-active platform, the MoS 2 /CMS is easy to be recycled and can remain excellent stability with over 90% degradation rate after 7 cycles of repeated catalytic reactions. To investigate its practical application potential, the MoS 2 /CMS was mounted in the pipeline of a homemade circulatory system, which was completely decolored 2.0 L Rh B aqueous solution after 2 h under a circulating flow of 30 mL min −1 . Overall, this work presents an efficient and extensible strategy for construction of high-performance piezocatalytic materials with not only a desired integrated structure to produce sensitive deformations under mild mechanical stimuli, but also a freestanding form with excellent recyclability to alleviate secondary pollution. This research would provide viable guidance for promoting piezoelectric materials towards practical applications for wastewater decontamination.

Abstract:Strain-induced internal electric fields present a significant path to boosting the separation of photoinduced electrons and holes. In addition, piezo-induced positive/negative pairs could be released smoothly, taking advantage of the excellent electroconductibility of some conductors. Herein, the hybrid piezo-photocatalysis is constructed by combining debut piezoelectric nanosheets (Bi4O5I2) and typical conductor multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNT). The photocatalytic degradation efficiency that the hybrid CNT/Bi4O5I2 exhibits was remarkably increased by more than 2.3 times under ultrasonic vibration, due to the piezo-generated internal electric field. In addition, the transient photocurrent spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance measurement reveal that the CNT coating on Bi4O5I2 enhances the piezo-induced positive/negative migration. Therefore, the piezocatalytic activity of CNT/Bi4O5I2 could be improved by three times, compared with pure Bi4O5I2 nanosheets. Our results may offer promising approaches to sketching efficient piezo-photocatalysis for the full utilization of solar energy or mechanical vibration.

Abstract:Piezoelectric catalysis, a new catalytic method, is widely used in the field of environmental sanitation, including waste water treatment and dye degradation. However, in the face of the growing environmental pollution problem, the efficiency of piezoelectric catalysis is still hampered by the stress variation in the natural environment. Therefore, it is particularly important to improve the catalytic efficiency of piezoelectric materials. We divide piezoelectric materials into two categories: inorganic piezoelectric materials and organic piezoelectric materials. Then the mainstream inorganic piezoelectric materials are divided into four subcategories, namely: (1) MTiO 3 (M = Ba, Sr), (2) bi-class catalytic materials, (3) MoX 2 (X = S, Se), and (4) ZnO piezoelectric materials; The mainstream organic piezoelectric materials are divided into PVDF and g-C 3 N 4 materials. At the same time, the above materials are summarized to explain the excellent performance of materials from the perspective of structure and piezoelectric principle. In addition, we summarized the modification methods that can be applied to piezoelectric materials: (1) Morphology methods, (2) composites with heterojunctions, (3) surface modification. Finally, we summarized the prospects of piezoelectric materials in the field of environment and water treatment.

Abstract:Over the last decade, ferro-/piezo-electric materials have provided new directions to improve catalysis. However, current challenges that must be solved include secondary pollution by the piezoelectric particulates and a limited potential for reuse and recyclability. Here, we report an efficient approach of using a piezoceramic-polymer porous foam to package barium strontium titanate (BST) particulates and prevent secondary pollution, while being able to maintain a high photo-piezo-catalytic performance after 10 cycles of repeated catalytic reactions. The photo-piezo-catalysis achieves a 97.8% dye degradation and an enhanced performance of 275% when compared to individual photocatalysis by light irradiation or periodic low-frequency mechanical squeezing alone. It is suggested the photo-piezo-catalytic coupling effect combines the advantages of increased generated electron-hole pairs and the induced piezoelectric electric field leads to a higher degree of electron-hole separation. The BST-PDMS porous foam for photo-piezo-catalysis offers a potential approach in wastewater degradation via utilizing both solar energy and environmental mechanical sources.

Abstract:Organic contaminants have posed a direct and substantial risk to human wellness and the environment. In recent years, piezoelectric catalysis has evolved as a novel and effective method for decomposing these contaminants. Although piezoelectric materials offer a wide range of options, most related studies thus far have focused on inorganic materials and have paid little attention to organic materials. Organic materials have advantages, such as being lightweight, inexpensive, and easy to process, over inorganic materials. Therefore, this paper provides a comprehensive review of the progress made in the research on piezoelectric catalysis using organic materials, high-lighting their catalytic efficiency in addressing various pollutants. In addition, the applications of organic materials in piezoelectric catalysis for water decomposition to produce hydrogen, disinfect bacteria, treat tumors, and reduce carbon dioxide are presented. Finally, future developmental trends regarding the piezoelectric catalytic potential of organic materials are explored.

Remarkably enhanced piezo-photocatalytic performance in BaTiO3/CuO heterostructures for organic pollutant degradation

Abstract:Abstract Introducing polarization field of piezoelectric materials is an effective strategy to improve photocatalytic performance. In this study, a new type of BaTiO 3 /CuO heterostructure catalyst was designed and synthesized to achieve high piezo-photocatalytic activity through the synergy of heterojunction and piezoelectric effect. The BaTiO 3 /CuO heterostructure shows a significantly enhanced piezo-photocatalytic degradation efficiency of organic pollutants compared with the individual BaTiO 3 nanowires (NWs) and CuO nanoparticles (NPs). Under the co-excitation of ultrasonic vibration and ultraviolet radiation, the optimal degradation reaction rate constant k of polarized BaTiO 3 /CuO heterostructure on methyl orange (MO) dye can reach 0.05 min − 1 , which is 6.1 times of photocatalytic rate and 7 times of piezocatalytic rate. The BaTiO 3 /CuO heterostructure with remarkable piezo-photocatalytic behavior provides a promising strategy for the development of high-efficiency catalysts for wastewater purification, and it also helps understand the coupling mechanism between piezoelectric effect and photocatalysis.

Novel Optimization of Photocatalytic Degradation of Wastewater Pollutants Using Piezoelectric and Paraelectric Materials

Abstract:Wastewater pollution has a detrimental impact on the environment, including harming aquatic ecosystems, causing eutrophication, and posing risks to human health. Existing catalysts commonly used for pollutant degradation in wastewater can demonstrate a low percent degradation of pollutants within certain time periods, have long reaction times, only work under limited conditions, work on a large or small scale, or possess a combination of these limitations. In recent advances, some piezoelectric materials and certain paraelectric materials have been shown to have catalytic activity in degrading pollutants. Lead zirconate (piezoelectric) and strontium titanate (paraelectric) are examples of materials that possess these properties. The purpose of this study was to utilize multiple piezoelectric materials and other catalysts with favorable properties, such as lead zirconate and strontium titanate, to develop a novel catalyst to degrade pollutants in wastewater. In the experiment, catalysts were created by mixing various ratios of lead zirconate, strontium titanate, and titanium dioxide powders–the latter being the currently most used photocatalyst for wastewater purification. These catalysts were added to four different wastewater samples obtained from different sources: three were industrial wastewater samples containing inorganic and organic pollutants with one sample being mixed with dye pollutants in addition. The other wastewater sample was a lab-created solution of methylene blue and water. Each sample of wastewater and catalyst mixed together was subjected to controlled conditions and specified durations of visible and UV light exposure. Spectroscopy was used to analyze the effectiveness of the different catalysts. The absorption of each mixture of wastewater and catalyst was recorded at both the beginning and end of the reaction period and compared, and the percent difference in absorption at peak length between the beginning and end of the reaction period was used to calculate the photodegradation efficiency. The catalyst that was created using a 1:1 ratio of strontium titanate to lead zirconate sample had a 19.57% greater percent degradation efficiency compared to the traditionally used catalyst (titanium dioxide) when both were used on the third industrial wastewater sample under the study’s experimental conditions. A higher percent degradation efficiency signifies a greater a reduction in the initial pollutants. This decrease could potentially signify the breakdown of pollutants into smaller particles, which may be less harmful. The findings in this study underscore the potential of the catalyst, strontium titanate and lead zirconate in a 1:1 ratio, for the use of wastewater treatment and hence to protect the environment from wastewater pollution, possibly with a higher percent degradation efficiency than the currently used catalyst for this application.

Abstract:Anodic oxidation followed by a solvothermal method is used to prepare Bi/BiOI/ZnO heterojunction films. The formed ZnO nanoneedles have a length-to-width ratio of more than 8. The diameter of the formed Bi nanoparticles is no more than 10 nm. The results show that the ZnO and Bi/BiOI/ZnO heterojunction films possess piezoelectric performance. Using these films as critical materials, we designed and built a closed-cycle piezo-photocatalytic system to degrade RhB organic dye in wastewater. When the slope angle is 15°, the dye photodegradation performance is increased to the highest value. When the pump flux increases from 240 to 500 L·h −1 , the photodegradation performance of Bi/BiOI/ZnO heterojunction film reaches the maximum value, 2.125 × 10 –2 min −1 . The photocatalytic activity is 37.9 times higher than the pristine ZnO film in stationary RhB solution. The significant performance boosting is attributed to the piezo-photocatalytic synergistic strategy triggered by water flowing. In addition to the role of piezoelectric catalysis, the built-in electric field generated by the piezoelectric potential inhibits the recombination of photoinduced carriers. The heterojunction enhances the transfer efficiency of photogenerated carriers. The solution flowing increases the dissolved oxygen amount and accelerates the mass transfer. The solution thinning improves the dissolved oxygen amount and increases light transmission. The piezo-photocatalytic system can also be used to degrade high-concentration organic wastewater, providing us with an innovative idea for the practical application of photocatalysis.
