Abstract:Privileged photocatalysts combine semiconductor physics, materials science, chemical engineering and environmental science to convert abundant photonic energy into chemical energy. A common limitation of photocatalysts at-scale processes is their insufficient light absorption capability and charge carrier management. Additionally, the potential secondary pollution and difficulties in effective recovery associated with the dispersion of traditional powder catalysts in the water further limit their industrial application. To address these issues, strong electric fields generated by the piezoelectric effect were introduced to reduce the scattering probability of photoinduced carriers during their migration, thereby significantly enhancing photocatalytic efficiency. Specifically, we have developed a PDMS-loaded solid solution 0.7 BiFeO 3 -0.3 BaTiO 3 (BFBT) hybrid catalyst that achieves a degradation rate of 99% for Rhodamine B solution within 60 min under the synergistic action of low-frequency vibration and light irradiation. The degradation kinetic constant was 0.080 min −1 , representing a piezoelectric enhancement of photocatalysis by 148%. The internal electric field is excited by periodic mechanical stress, which finely regulates the interface energy band structure, promotes the effective separation of photoinduced carriers and enhances the generation of reactive oxygen species, thereby strengthening the chemical reaction kinetics and achieving efficient degradation of pollutants.

Abstract:Construction of heterojunction piezo-photocatalysts is a promising approach to improve catalytic performance for solving environmental pollution issues. However, the mechanism of the synergistic effect of defects and piezoelectric fields on the interface polarization, charge transfer, and active sites in heterojunctions still needs to be further explored. Here, oxygen vacancy-rich Bi2MoO6 (VBMO) and TiO2 (TO) were combined into an S-scheme heterojunction (VBMO-xTO) by hydrothermal method for piezo-photocatalytic degradation of gatifloxacin (GAT). Experimental and theoretical results confirm that oxygen vacancies induce the formation of Mo (VBMO)-O (TO) bonds at the interface, which in turn aggravates the internal reconstruction of the heterojunction. Simultaneously, the formed interface bonds strengthen the interface bonding force, improve its piezoelectric polarization, and acts as an interface electron bridge to promote charge transfer. In addition, under the action of ultrasound, the piezoelectric field generated by the compressive stress regulates the electron distribution of the heterojunction and enhances its adsorption performance. Benefiting from the synergistic reinforcement mechanism, VBMO-15TO exhibits excellent piezo-photocatalytic degradation of GAT, and the degradation rate is 92.5 % in only 6 min. This study provides a reference for understanding the effect of defects on the piezoelectric properties of heterojunctions.
Piezo-photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutant by a novel BaTiO3–NiO composite

Abstract:Recombination of charge carriers restricts the performance of conventional catalysts. Introducing piezoelectric materials can enhance the catalytic performance by mitigating the recombination. Herein, a noble metal-free BaTiO 3 –NiO composite catalyst was synthesized by a cost-effective sol-precipitation route and utilized to facilitate the decoloration of methylene blue. The XRD and FTIR pattern showed that no other phase was present apart from BaTiO 3 and NiO for the composite. Raman spectra showed all the modes corresponding to tetragonal BaTiO 3 and cubic NiO. The piezo-photo-catalytic activity for heterostructure was substantially higher than the individual photocatalytic and piezocatalytic activity. The dye followed a pseudo-first-order reaction under the combined effect of ultrasonication and UV irradiation, giving a remarkable high rate constant of 0.028 min −1 and 90% degradation. This enhanced degradation performance, which is attributed to the synergistic coupling between photocatalytic and piezocatalytic effects, can provide a future strategy for the development of piezo-photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

Abstract:In this work, the strong piezocatalysis is found in the two-step hydrothermally-synthesized barium titanate/carbon hybrid nanocomposites and is used for rhodamine B dye decomposition. As the carbon content increases from 0 to 5 wt%, the catalytic performance of hybrid nanocomposites first increases and then slightly decreases. When the carbon content increases to 2 wt%, the barium titanate/carbon hybrid nanocomposites exhibit the optimal piezocatalytic performance, which have the ~75.5% dye decomposition ratio and the ~0.04901 min-1 reaction rate constant after the 40 min vibration stimulation, while that of the pure barium titanate are 48.4% and 0.01942 min-1, respectively. The improvement of piezocatalytic performance in barium titanate/carbon hybrid nanocomposites can be ascribed to the action of carbon's charge transfer which promotes the effective separation of the piezoelectrically-induced electric charges. After three runs recycle utilization tests, the barium titanate/carbon hybrid nanocomposites still exhibit ~70% decomposition ratio of rhodamine B dye. The strong piezocatalytic performance and the good reusability make the barium titanate/carbon hybrid nanocomposites potential in the field of wastewater treatment through utilizing natural vibration energy in future.

Abstract:Piezo-photocatalytic technique is a new-emerging strategy to alleviate photoinduced charge recombination and thus enhance catalytic performance. The heterojunction construction engineering is a powerful approach to improve photocatalytic performance. Herein, the BiOCl/NaNbO3 with different molar ratios piezoelectric composites were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal methods. The piezo/photodegradation rate (k value) of Rhodamine B (RhB) for BiOCl/NaNbO3 (BN-3, 0.0192 min−1) is 2.2 and 5.2 times higher than that of BiOCl (0.0089 min−1) and NaNbO3 (0.0037 min−1), respectively. The enhanced performance of BN-3 composite can be attributed to the heterojunction construction between BiOCl and NaNbO3. In addition, the piezo/photodecomposition ratio of RhB for BN-3 (87.4%) is 8.8 and 2.2 times higher than that of piezocatalysis (9.9%) and photocatalysis (40.4%), respectively. We further investigated the mechanism of piezocatalysis, photocatalysis, and their synergy effect of BN-3 composite. This study favors an in-depth understanding of piezo-photocatalysis, providing a new strategy to improve the environmental pollutant remediation efficiency of piezoelectric composites.

Abstract:Abstract Introducing polarization field of piezoelectric materials is an effective strategy to improve photocatalytic performance. In this study, a new type of BaTiO 3 /CuO heterostructure catalyst was designed and synthesized to achieve high piezo-photocatalytic activity through the synergy of heterojunction and piezoelectric effect. The BaTiO 3 /CuO heterostructure shows a significantly enhanced piezo-photocatalytic degradation efficiency of organic pollutants compared with the individual BaTiO 3 nanowires (NWs) and CuO nanoparticles (NPs). Under the co-excitation of ultrasonic vibration and ultraviolet radiation, the optimal degradation reaction rate constant k of polarized BaTiO 3 /CuO heterostructure on methyl orange (MO) dye can reach 0.05 min − 1 , which is 6.1 times of photocatalytic rate and 7 times of piezocatalytic rate. The BaTiO 3 /CuO heterostructure with remarkable piezo-photocatalytic behavior provides a promising strategy for the development of high-efficiency catalysts for wastewater purification, and it also helps understand the coupling mechanism between piezoelectric effect and photocatalysis.

Abstract:Over the last decade, ferro-/piezo-electric materials have provided new directions to improve catalysis. However, current challenges that must be solved include secondary pollution by the piezoelectric particulates and a limited potential for reuse and recyclability. Here, we report an efficient approach of using a piezoceramic-polymer porous foam to package barium strontium titanate (BST) particulates and prevent secondary pollution, while being able to maintain a high photo-piezo-catalytic performance after 10 cycles of repeated catalytic reactions. The photo-piezo-catalysis achieves a 97.8% dye degradation and an enhanced performance of 275% when compared to individual photocatalysis by light irradiation or periodic low-frequency mechanical squeezing alone. It is suggested the photo-piezo-catalytic coupling effect combines the advantages of increased generated electron-hole pairs and the induced piezoelectric electric field leads to a higher degree of electron-hole separation. The BST-PDMS porous foam for photo-piezo-catalysis offers a potential approach in wastewater degradation via utilizing both solar energy and environmental mechanical sources.

Abstract:The polarization electric field feature of piezoelectric materials is greatly beneficial to enhance the separation and migration of photogenerated carriers. Herein, we propose a BaTiO3/CuPbSbS3 (BTO/CPSS) heterostructure photocatalyst through the combination of hydrothermal and facile butyldithiocarbamate acid (BDCA) solution process, in which the catalytic degradation performance of BTO/CPSS can be effectively enhanced by the synergistic effect of piezoelectricity and semiconductor properties. Through dedicatedly adjusting the loading amount of CPSS, the Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation efficiency of BTO/CPSS achieves 9.33×10−2 min−1 along with a strong catalyst stability, which is attributed to the prolonged charge life time due to the piezoelectricity of the optimal BTO/CPSS. Moreover, the heterostructure of BTO/CPSS and polarization effect of BTO can further enhance the separation of electron-hole pairs, which can provide stronger driving force for catalytic degradation.

Abstract:Piezocatalysis is a burgeoning sustainable technology due to its attractive potential in solving environmental and resource issues with various mechanical energies. Herein, a high-performance freestanding composite piezocatalyst was synthesized by combining few-layer MoS 2 nanosheets with highly porous flexible carbonaceous matirx derived from melamine sponge (CMS), which can greatly harvest mild mechanical energies to trigger off piezoelectric effect for efficient dye degradation. Under mechanical stirring, the developed MoS 2 /CMS showed distinguished piezocatalytic degradation efficiency (99.8% within 10 min) for Rhodamine B (Rh B) dye solution. Besides, as a brick-shaped piezo-active platform, the MoS 2 /CMS is easy to be recycled and can remain excellent stability with over 90% degradation rate after 7 cycles of repeated catalytic reactions. To investigate its practical application potential, the MoS 2 /CMS was mounted in the pipeline of a homemade circulatory system, which was completely decolored 2.0 L Rh B aqueous solution after 2 h under a circulating flow of 30 mL min −1 . Overall, this work presents an efficient and extensible strategy for construction of high-performance piezocatalytic materials with not only a desired integrated structure to produce sensitive deformations under mild mechanical stimuli, but also a freestanding form with excellent recyclability to alleviate secondary pollution. This research would provide viable guidance for promoting piezoelectric materials towards practical applications for wastewater decontamination.

Abstract:The piezoelectric effect can effectively modulate the energy band structure of the optoelectronic semiconductor and the transport behavior of carriers. Here, we propose a BaTiO3/SrTiO3 nanocomposite, and effectively enhance its photocatalytic performance through piezoelectric effect. The heterostructured BaTiO3/SrTiO3 nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning, and they were polarized by a high-voltage electric field. Under the co-excitation of ultrasonic and UV irradiation, the BaTiO3/SrTiO3 nanofibers presented excellent degradation ability of pollutants in water. The BaTiO3/SrTiO3 nanofibers can degrade Rhodamine B (RhB) dye by ~97.4% within 30 min under the combined action of ultrasonic and ultraviolet irradiation, which was 2.2 times that of pure SrTiO3 nanofibers. The piezoelectric effect provides a built-in polarization field to improve the separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers. Moreover, DFT calculation results showed that piezoelectric potential can reduce the band gap width of the SrTiO3. This article provides a promising strategy for improving photocatalytic performance of nanocomposites through the use of mechanical energy.

Abstract:The induced built-in electric field by piezoelectric materials has proven to be one of the most effective strategies for modulating the charge-transfer pathway and inhibiting carrier recombination. In this work, a series of core-shell structured BaTiO3@TiO2 nanowires (BT@TiO2 NWs) heterojunctions were synthesized and the significant coupling effects between BaTiO3 (BT) and TiO2 resulted in surperior piezo-photocatalytic performance, which was demonstrated by three typical types of dyes with high concentrations. The degradation efficiency of 30 mg/L Rhodamine B (RhB), Methylene blue (MB) and Indigo Carmine (IC) solutions by 0.5 g/L BT@TiO2 NWs reached 99.5% in 75 min, 99.8% in 105 min and 99.7% in 45 min, respectively, which are much higher than piezo-photocatalysis systems reported before. To reveal the coupling mechanisms, photoelectrochemical measurements and band diagram analysis were carried out. The carrier concentration was increased from 2.28 × 1017 cm−3 to 4.91 × 1018 cm−3 and the lifetime of charges was improved from 50.37 ms to 60.98 ms due to the construction of a heterojunction between TiO2 and BT. It was proposed that the tilting and bending of the energy band caused by the introduction of a piezoelectric polarization can facilitate carrier separation both in the bulk phase and at the surfaces of semiconductors, resulting in outstanding piezo-photocatalytic properties for highly concentrated dye degradation. This work provides a universal catalyzer for highly concentrated dye degradation.

Abstract:Co-utilization of solar and mechanical energies via the piezo-phototronic effect is a new-emerging strategy for the implementation of catalysis. Herein, a coupling among piezoelectricity, semiconductor, and photoexcitation of Bi4Ti3O12 nanostructures (BiTO NSs) to enable a high piezo-photocatalytic activity is demonstrated. Under the advantages of improving carrier density and suppressing the carrier recombination, the electrospun BiTO NSs calcined at 600 °C exhibits a superior piezo-photocatalytic performance with a Rhodamine B degradation rate of 0.071 min−1 that is 2.5-fold and 6.7-fold for the piezocatalytic and photocatalytic solos, respectively. The high piezo-photocatalytic performance is comprehensively ascribed to several properties, including high surface area, small crystal size, suitable energy band, large piezoelectric polarization, and rich oxygen vacancy. Furthermore, by bi-harvesting the visible light and ultrasonic energies, BiTO NSs can efficiently produce superoxide and hydroxyl radicals that are responsible for the dye degradation. This work provides a new strategy for developing high-performance catalysts and sheds new insights into the piezo-photocatalysis.

Abstract:Piezoelectric nanomaterials have been utilized to realize effective charge separation for degrading organic pollutants in water under the action of mechanical vibrations. However, in particulate form, the nanostructured piezoelectric catalysts can flow into the aqueous pollutant and limit its recyclability and reuse. Here, we report a new method of using a barium titanate (BaTiO3, BTO)–polydimethylsiloxane composite porous foam catalyst to address the challenge of secondary pollution and reusable limits. Piezo-catalytic dye degradation activity of the porous foam can degrade a Rhodamine B (RhB) dye solution by ∼94%, and the composite material exhibits excellent stability after repeated decomposition of 12 cycles. It is suggested that under ultrasonic vibrations, the piezoelectric BTO materials create separated electron–hole pairs that react with hydroxyl ions and oxygen molecules to generate superoxide (•O2–) and hydroxyl (•OH) radicals for organic dye degradation. The degradation efficiency of RhB is associated with the piezoelectric constant, the specific surface area, and the shape of the material.

Abstract:A novel heterojunction composite of CoOx/Bi4Ti3O12 was synthesized through a combination of molten salt and photodeposition methods. The optimal sample exhibited superior performance in the piezocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) dye with a degradation rate of 1.09 h-1, which was 2.4 times higher than that of pristine Bi4Ti3O12. Various characterizations were conducted to reveal the fundamental nature accountable for the outstanding piezocatalytic performance of CoOx/Bi4Ti3O12. The investigation of the band structure indicated that the CoOx/Bi4Ti3O12 composite formed a type-I p-n heterojunction structure, with CoOx acting as a hole trapper to effectively separate and transfer piezogenerated carriers. Significantly, the MO degradation rate of the best CoOx/Bi4Ti3O12 sample further increased to 2.96 h-1 under combined ultrasonic vibration and simulated sunlight. The synergy between piezocatalysis and photocatalysis can be ascribed to the following factors. The photoexcitation process ensures the sufficient generation of charge carriers in the CoOx/Bi4Ti3O12, while the piezoelectric field within Bi4Ti3O12 promotes the separation of electron-hole pairs in the bulk phase. Furthermore, the heterojunction structure between Bi4Ti3O12 and CoOx significantly facilitates the surface separation of charge carriers. This increased involvement of free electrons and holes in the reaction leads to a remarkable enhancement in catalytic MO degradation. This work contributes to the understanding of the coupling mechanism between the piezoelectric effect and photocatalysis, and also provides a promising strategy for the development of efficient catalysts for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Piezocatalysis-induced dye degradation has garnered significant attention as an effective method for addressing wastewater treatment challenges. In our study, we employed a room-temperature sonochemical method to synthesize piezoelectric barium titanate nanoparticles (BaTiO3: BTO) with varying levels of Li doping. This approach not only streamlined the sample preparation process but also significantly reduced the overall time required for synthesis, making it a highly efficient and practical method. One of the key findings was the exceptional performance of the Li-doped BTO nanoparticles. With 20 mg of Li additive, we achieved 90 % removal of Rhodamine B (RhB) dye within a relatively short timeframe of 150 minutes, all while subjecting the sample to ultrasonic vibration. This rapid and efficient dye degradation was further evidenced by the calculated kinetic rate constant, which indicated seven times faster degradation rate compared to pure BTO. The enhanced piezoelectric performance observed in the Li-doped BTO nanoparticles can be attributed to the strategic substitution of Li atoms, which facilitated a more efficient transfer of charge charges at the interface. Abstract:Photocatalysis technology can not only degrade pollutants by renewable solar energy, but also has enormous promise for resolving environmental issues. The piezoelectric field inside the piezoelectric material can be used as the driving force of charge separation to improve the photocatalytic activity. In order to study the catalytic effect of piezoelectric materials on photocatalysis, a flower-like Bi4Ti3O12/BiOCl (BTO/BOC) composite catalyst is prepared in this paper. The photogenerated carrier separation efficiency is characterized by electrochemical, PL and ESR tests. BOC's built-in electric field helps to facilitate the separation of photogenerated carrier, reducing the recombination rate and improving photocatalytic efficiency. The piezoelectric effect caused by ultrasonic vibration is coupled with the photocatalysis, which realizes the high efficiency co-catalysis of BTO/BOC piezoelectric photocatalyst. The polarized BTO/BOC heterojunction catalysts achieved a very high degradation efficiency (99.15 %) under piezo-photocatalysis. The degradation rates (k = 0.7494 min−1) are 1.74 and 8.19 times higher than photocatalysis (k = 0.4304 min−1) and piezoelectric catalysis (k = 0.0915 min−1), respectively. The investigation of the piezoelectric effect and photocatalysis's synergistic relationship is very significant.

Abstract:Recently, the lead-free piezoelectric material Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 (BNT) has been adopted for piezo-catalysis and synergistic catalysis, such as piezo-photocatalysis. Nonetheless, the catalytic effect of single BNT is too weak to degrade multifarious contaminants. Here, BNT and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) composite were prepared and the catalytic performance of BNT was prominently boosted by introducing MWCNTs as the electron capturer. Particularly, the degradation rate of Rhodamine B (RhB, a typical contaminant) could reach 90% within 30 min, with a high rate constant of 0.0805 min−1. The specific degradation pathway of RhB was analyzed. The formation of oxygen vacancies was confirmed by XPS analysis, and the vital role of oxygen vacancies in the separation of photo-generated carriers was elucidated. Meanwhile, the BNT/MWCNTs composites manifested stronger transient current response compared to single BNT under the action of light irradiation and ultrasonic vibration, respectively. According to impedance analysis, the composites exhibited lower carrier transport resistance. Eventually, the mechanism of enhanced piezo-photocatalysis was explained in detail. This study provides an effective route to break the shackle of carrier recombination and speed up the carrier transport in piezo-photocatalytic materials.

Abstract:The strategy of boosting photocatalytic activity through the internal potential field has attracted wide attention. Therefore, the coupling of the piezoelectric effect and photocatalytic process promoted the separation of photogenerated carriers, thus increasing piezo-photocatalytic activity. Herein, BaTiO3 nanoparticles were prepared on the Ti3C2Tx surface by an in-situ hydrothermal method. The obtained BaTiO3/Ti3C2Tx piezo-photocatalysts exhibited a rapid electron transfer, low energy bandwidth of 2.18 eV, and wide visible light response range of 400–800 nm. Their phenol degradation rate reached 94.3% within the first 60 min of reaction conducted under light irradiation and ultrasonic vibration. During the phenol degradation process, intermediate products were generated first and then mineralized into CO2 and H2O due to the influence of piezoelectric potential of the BaTiO3/Ti3C2Tx photocatalytic activity. Furthermore, ultrasonic vibration produced a piezoelectric field on the BaTiO3/Ti3C2Tx, which enhanced the separation of photogenerated carriers, making hydroxyl radicals (·OH) the most active species in the synergistic degradation of phenol. These results demonstrate that coupling piezoelectric and photocatalytic properties has broad application prospects in water pollution control.
