Abstract:Selective oxidation of olefins using molecular oxygen is a great challenge. This study reports two types of novel eco-friendly heterogeneous hybrid catalysts. One comprises of a lacunary Keggin-type polyoxometalate (POM) GaW11 linked to nano-sized silica using (3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) to form GaW11-APTES@SiO2. Another catalyst is Au/GaW11 APTES@SiO2 prepared by wet deposition of nano-gold on the former one. The catalysts were characterized and used for the solvent-free oxidation of cyclohexene with molecular oxygen under mild reaction conditions. Both the catalysts showed good conversion and significant selectivity towards oxidized products for cyclohexene. GaW11-APTES@SiO2 showed a high conversion of up to 62.02% with a selectivity of 59.13% towards epoxide at a mild temperature of 50 degrees C. Au/GaW11-APTES@SiO2 showed a conversion of 69.32% with 57.34% selectivity to 2-cyclohexene-1-ol at a temperature of 80 degrees C. The heterogeneous catalysts were reused several times with no significant loss in conversion or selectivity towards the oxidized products.

Abstract:The oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanone, cyclohexanol, and adipic acid, which are important raw materials in nylon industry, is still being challenged in conventional processes. Microreactors and gold catalysts are both widely researched areas at present, so an effort was made to make use of collaborative properties of both. In this study, stainless steel microcapillary coated with a supported nano-gold catalyst was prepared, characterized, and employed for the oxidation of cyclohexane. Under the temperature of 180 °C, residence time of 4 min, reaction pressure of 3 MPa and molar ratio of oxygen to cyclohexane of 0.3:1, the conversion of cyclohexane was 2.09%, with the selectivity of cyclohexanol, 29.37%; cyclohexanone, 39.89%; cyclohexyl hydroperoxide, 2.46%; and adipic acid, 18.87%. Experiments showed that stainless steel microcapillary coated with a supported nano-gold catalyst in cyclohexane oxidation is a feasible process; the reaction time is very short, and the process operation runs safely.

Abstract:Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-stabilized Au nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by colloidal methods in which temperature variations (−75 to 75 °C) and mixed H2O/EtOH solvent ratios (0, 50, and 100 vol/vol) were used. The resulting Au NPs were immobilized on TiO2 (P25), and their catalytic performance was investigated for the liquid phase oxidation of glycerol. For each unique solvent system, there was a systematic increase in the average Au particle diameter as the temperature of the colloidal preparation increased. Generation of the Au NPs in H2O at 1 °C resulted in a high observed activity compared with current Au/TiO2 catalysts (turnover frequency = 915 h–1). Interestingly, Au catalysts with similar average particle sizes but prepared under different conditions had contrasting catalytic performance. Abstract:Catalytic total oxidation is an effective technique for the treatment of industrial VOCs principally resulting from industrial processes using solvents and usually containing mono-aromatics (BTEX) and oxygenated compounds (acetone, ethanol, butanone). The aim of this work is to deposit gold nanoparticles on CoAl mixed oxide issued from layered double hydroxide (LDH) precursor by using the deposition precipitation (DP) method, which is applied with two modifications, labeled method (A) and method (B), in order to enhance the interaction of the HAuCl4 precursor with the support. Method (A) involves the hydrolysis of the HAuCl4 precursor after addition of the support, while in method (B), the gold precursor is hydrolyzed before adding the support. The two methods were applied using as support the CoAl mixed oxide and the LDH precursor. Samples were characterized by several physical chemical techniques and evaluated for ethanol total oxidation. Method (B) allowed the ethanol oxidation activity to be enhanced for the resulting Au/CoAlOx catalysts thanks to the high surface concentration of Co2+ and improved reducibility at low temperature. The presence of gold permits to minimize the formation of by-products, notably, methanol, allowed for a total oxidation of ethanol at lower temperature than the corresponding support.

Abstract:Catalytic transformation of glycerol to value-added products has attracted the attention of scientists all over the world. Among various transformations, selective oxidation of glycerol with molecular oxygen to dihydroxyacetone, glyceric acid, glyceraldehydes, and tartronic acid is challenging both from the viewpoint of academic research and industrial application. Herein, we review the recent progresses in the selective oxidation of glycerol under base-free conditions. Those catalysts widely reported for the selective oxidation of the terminal hydroxyl and secondary hydroxyl groups in glycerol, such as monometallic Au, Pt, and Pd NPs, and bimetallic Au-Pt, Au-Pd, Pt-Bi, Pt-Sb, and Pt-Cu, were compared and discussed in detail. The reaction mechanism over Pt-based catalysts, possible catalyst deactivation, and the corresponding improvements are presented. Further, the recent progresses in the continuous oxidation of glycerol in fixed bed reactors and its excellent selectivity in the formation of dihydroxyacetone are highlighted.

Abstract:Selective oxidation of glycerol is a hot topic. Increased biodiesel production has led to glycerol oxidation over Au- and Pt-based catalysts being widely studied. However, Pt catalysts suffer from deactivation because of weak metal-support interactions. In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs)-pillared nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) was prepared by direct pyrolysis of melamine on MWCNTs, and the synthesized NG-MWCNT composite was used as the support for Pt. Characterization results showed that the surface area (173 m2/g) and pore volume of the NG-MWCNT composite were greater than those of bare MWCNTs and the separated melamine pyrolysis product (CNx). Pt (1.4 ± 0.4 nm) dispersion on the NG-MWCNTs was favorable and the Pt/NG-MWCNT catalyst was highly active and selective in the oxidation of glycerol to glyceric acid (GLYA) in base-free aqueous solution. For example, the conversion of glycerol reached 64.4% with a GLYA selectivity of 81.0%, whereas the conversions of glycerol over Pt/MWCNTs and Pt/CNx were 29.0% and 31.6%, respectively. The unique catalytic activity of the Pt/NG-MWCNTs is attributed to well-dispersed Pt clusters on the NG-MWCNTs and the electron-donating effect of the nitrogen dopant in the NG-MWCNTs.

Abstract:The family of endothelins, endothelin-1 (ET-1), ET-2 and ET-3, act on two subtypes of receptors called ETA and ETB receptors. BQ123 is an ETA-selective competitive antagonist. In this study, however, BQ123 inhibited ET-1-induced transients of cytosolic Ca2+ concentrations ([Ca2+]i) in an apparently noncompetitive manner in mouse L cell stably expressing cloned human ETA receptor. BQ123 (3-30 nM) did not change the EC50 of ET-1 (6.6 nM), but reduced the maximum responses down to 15.0%. In an non-equilibrium binding assay which mimicks the conditions of [Ca2+]i transient assay (cells were incubated with [125I]ET-1 only for 30 s), BQ123 (30 nM) constantly decreased the specific [125I]ET-1 binding to approximately 13% of that without the antagonist. Thus, the apparent noncompetitive antagonism by BQ123 of ETA receptor-mediated [Ca2+]i transient is due to the assay condition where the interactions of the agonist, antagonist and receptor remained non-equilibrium state.

Abstract:A series of hydrotalcite (HT) and hydrotalcite modified by the transition metal ion Ni(II) was prepared with a modified coprecipitation method before being loaded with gold nanoparticles. The gold supported on Ni3Al hydrotalcite with a Ni2+/Al3+ molar ratio of 3:1 was investigated. Different techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-vis diffuse reflection spectrum (UV-vis DRS) were applied to characterize the catalysts. A single-phase catalyst with high crystallinity, a layered structure and good composition was successfully fabricated. Good conversions and superior selectivities in the oxidation of benzyl alcohol and its derivatives were obtained with visible light due to the effect of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of gold nanoparticles and the synergy of the transition metal ion Ni(II). This reaction was proven to be photocatalytic by varying the intensity and wavelength of the visible light. The catalyst can be recycled three times. A corresponding photocatalytic mechanism of the oxidation reaction of benzyl alcohol was proposed.

Abstract:The hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol has an important industrial value but remains a great challenge. Herein, a tungsten oxide hydrate (WO3 & BULL;H2O) containing Bronsted acid sites and surface oxygen vacancies was in situ grown on the surface of alumina. The coordination chemistry of WO3 on the carrier contributes to the extremely dispersed platinum and the excellent acidic property, and much more Pt-O-W interfaces are created. The synthetic Pt/H-WO3/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst exhibited much higher catalytic performance for glycerol hydrogenolysis than Pt/C- WO3/gamma-Al2O3, in which C-WO3/gamma-Al2O3 was routinely prepared by calcining the tungsten precursor (AMT) pre-impregnated on gamma-Al2O3. The success for this strategy lies in the pre-control toward the state of WO3 on the support, and several characterization techniques were performed to reveal the structure-property relationship.

Abstract:Highly dispersed Pt nanoparticles were fabricated on the surface of S-grafted carbon nanofibers (Pt/S-CNFs) and used in selective oxidation of glycerol with molecular oxygen in a base-free aqueous solution. Characterizations disclosed that S-grafted CNFs are more favorable for the dispersion of Pt than that of crude CNFs and HNO3-pretreated CNFs. CNFs supported Pt catalysts are more selective toward the formation of glycerin acid, and the initial activity of surface Pt atoms in Pt/S-CNFs reached 750.7h−1 at 60°C in a base-free aqueous solution.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles supported on polymorphs of gallia (α-, β-, and γ-Ga2O3) were evaluated for the solvent-free liquid phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol by molecular oxygen. High selectivity to benzaldehyde was obtained under the reaction conditions of 130°C, 5atm and 5h in an autoclave. The Au/γ-Ga2O3 catalyst was also evaluated for oxidation of a range of alcohols using mesitylene as solvent under flowing oxygen at atmospheric pressure and 90°C. Under these conditions the conversion of benzyl alcohol reached 100% after 2h and it was demonstrated that the catalyst can be recycled four times without significant loss of activity. The structural data (TEM, XPS and TPSR of 2-propanol adsorption) along with the catalytic results indicate that the unique dehydrogenation capabilities of the Au/γ-gallia system are responsible for the enhanced activity achieved in the liquid phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles prepared by colloidal methods are effective catalysts for selective glycerol oxidation under basic conditions. Large-scale synthesis of catalysts by wet chemical methods leads to large amounts of waste and can result in polymer or salt residues remaining on the catalyst. In contrast, gas-phase cluster deposition (cluster beam deposition) offers a solvent-free method to synthesize controlled nanoparticles/clusters. We show that the deposition of bare gas-phase gold clusters onto carbon powder leads to a catalyst comparable to that prepared by colloidal methods. This shows the feasibility of the synthesis method to produce oxidation catalysts with reduced waste.

Abstract:The activation of molecular oxygen is a critical step in gold-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of alcohols. In this paper, we demonstrate that the charge of Au-adsorbed oxygen as well as the length of the O-O bond provides a useful descriptor for predicting effective catalysts for glycerol oxidation under base-free conditions. ZnO was theoretically predicted and experimentally confirmed to be the most effective support for Au to activate molecular oxygen and thus to catalyze aerobic oxidation of glycerol. Kinetic studies as well as electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra indicate that the as-generated O-2(-) species on the surface of Au/ZnO could selectively abstract protons from the central hydroxyl group of glycerol to form dihydroxyacetone (DHA), resulting in a selectivity to DHA of up to 85%.

Abstract:In this communication, N-doped multiwall carbon nanotube (N-MWCNT) supported Pt NPs (1.8nm) were prepared via a facile routine under microwave irradiation and tested in the selective oxidation of glycerol in an aqueous base-free solution. Characterizations confirmed that N-MWCNTs could improve the dispersion of Pt through strengthened metal-support interactions and donate its electron to metallic Pt. This electron-enriched Pt NPs on the surface of N-MWCNTs is active and stable for the selective oxidation of glycerol.

Abstract:In this work, N-doped porous carbon stabilized CuxO (Cu-NPCs) were synthesized by a one-pot method using copper nitrate as copper precursor with the aid of Pluronic F127 under acidic condition. The characterization results confirmed that CuxO species (CuO and Cu2O) existed in NPC in a highly dispersed state due to the strong interaction between CuxO and the doped N atoms. The obtained Cu-NPCs were used as supports to prepare Au catalysts for glycerol (GLY) oxidation to dihydroxyacetone (DHA) under base-free conditions. During the reaction, GLY preferentially adsorbed onto Au nanoparticles via the secondary OH groups due to the porous characteristics of the supports, the enhanced surface basicity from the N functionalities accelerates the alkoxide formation by abstracting proton from GLY, and the surface Cu+ sites instead of Au nanoparticles activate O2 molecules to produce active oxygen species, as a result, Au/Cu-NPC-15 %-H, which is the best catalyst in Au/Cu-NPCs, exhibited much higher catalytic activity and selectivity than those of Au/CuO. Moreover, due to the stabilization of CuxO species by NPC, relatively stable surface Cu+ content, and the strong interaction between Au nanoparticles and the supports, Au/Cu-NPC-15 %-H also possessed much better catalytic stability than that of Au/CuO during four consecutive catalytic runs.

Abstract:A big challenge in upgrading bio-oxygenate platform molecules is to develop catalysts for the selective oxidation of a nonterminal HO-bonded carbon atom in polyols. We report herein the first finding of a specific selectivity of oxide-supported nano-Au catalysts for dihydroxyacetone (DHA) production in glycerol oxidation in water without NaOH. Though the support nature (Al2O3, TiO2, ZrO2, NiO, and CuO) significantly affects the Au activity, a highly active Au/CuO catalyst offering DHA yields up to 80% at 40–50 °C has been identified. Rich data are provided to clarify that DHA is the only primary product of glycerol oxidation. This propensity of nano-Au for oxidizing the HO-bonded secondary (central) carbon is further verified by comparing the oxidation of propanediols and propanols. Molecular insight into the reactions is given on the basis of the kinetic isotopic effect study of deuterium on the oxidation of 2-propanol, uncovering an unanticipated chemistry of Au catalysis.
Impact of Pharmacy Practices on the Cost of Colony-Stimulating Factor Use in Pediatric Stem Cell Transplantation: An Institution-Based Analysis

Abstract:Purpose An evaluation of colony-stimulating factor (CSF) use in pediatric stem cell transplantation (SCT) was conducted to identify potential cost-efficiencies while preserving institutional standards of patient care. Methods Clinical and pharmacy records of the 55 SCTs performed during fiscal year 1995 were reviewed. Material costs per vial and per microgram, exclusive of preparation or overhead costs, were used. The best costing strategy was defined as the least expensive stocking and dispensing practice to deliver the drug actually used during the study period. Results CSFs were used in 35 of 55 transplants; 68% of usage was protocol-mandated to enhance engraftment; the remainder was associated with life-threatening complications of SCT. All use was consistent with published evidence-based guidelines. Changes in stocking and dispensing practices would result in an overall annual savings of $48,162 (fiscal year 1995 dollars), a 39% decrease in cost without a change in clinical application. Conclusions Our analysis demonstrates that stocking and dispensing practices place significant fiscal burden in the care of pediatric-aged patients and must be carefully considered. This analysis presents a model for evaluating all components of drug cost from a global perspective, highlighting a need for examination of pharmacy and manufacturing as well as clinical practices.

For this purpose, Au/MxOy/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by deposition-precipitation with urea, varying the gold content (0.5 or 4 wt.%) and pretreatment conditions (H2 or O2), and characterized by low temperature nitrogen adsorption-desorption, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), scanning transmission electron microscopy-high angle annular dark field (STEM HAADF), diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared (DRIFT) spectroscopy of CO adsorption, temperature-programmable desorption (TPD) of ammonia and carbon dioxide, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Three states of gold were identified on the surface of the catalysts, Au0, Au1+ and Au3+, and their ratio determined the catalysts performance. Based on a comparison of catalytic and spectroscopic results, it may be concluded that Au+ was the active site state, while Au0 had negative effect, due to a partial blocking of Au0 by solvent. Au3+ also inhibited the oxidation process, due to the strong adsorption of the solvent and/or water formed during the reaction. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations confirmed these suggestions. The dependence of selectivity on the ratio of Brønsted acid centers to Brønsted basic centers was revealed.
