Abstract:In this study we used differential and CTM InSAR techniques to monitor landslide slides at different geological sites in Canada. Our results show that InSAR measurements are providing new information on the deformation behaviour of complex landslide processes.

Abstract:The supported Pt and WOx catalysts are widely studied for the hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol. Nevertheless, the promoting role of W species remains unclear owing to the complexity in ternary hybrid catalysts. Herein, tungsten oxides (WO3 .0.33H(2)O) with the varying quantities of oxygen vacancy (V-o) were successfully synthesized and directly used as a support for loading Pt. The platinum loading high oxygen vacancies (H-WO3) containing V-o in abundance showed much higher catalytic activity and selectivity than that for low oxygen vacancies (L-WO3). The uniform dispersion of Pt particles, the high acidity, and the strong Pt and support interaction observed on Pt/H-WO3 are associated with the existence of V-o in a large amount, resulting in the significant enhancement in the catalytic performance. A plausible model for glycerol hydrogenolysis on Pt/ H-WO3 was proposed, wherein the unsaturated W ions coordinate with two terminal -OH groups of a glycerol molecule, and the secondary -OH group was protonated by the B acid from the Pt-(WOx)(n)-H as well as the in situ generated H delta+ species.
Promoting the Effect of Au on the Selective Hydrogenolysis of Glycerol to 1,3-Propanediol over the Pt/WO x /Al 2 O 3 Catalyst

Abstract:The selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) is an important yet challenging reaction because it requires the selective cleavage of the sterically hindered secondary C–O bond of glycerol. In this work, we have developed a new catalyst, 0.1Au-2Pt/7.5W/Al, which affords both high glycerol conversion (77.5%) and 1,3-PDO selectivity (54.8%), which are significantly higher than the Au-free counterpart. HAADF-STEM reveals that the structure of 0.1Au-2Pt/7.5W/Al is characterized with ∼2 nm Pt NPs decorated with Au-WO x at the periphery, where the Au additive exists most likely as single atoms. Chemisorption and XPS show that the electron transfer from W to Au can help to weaken the strong metal support interaction (SMSI) between Pt and WO x , and thus greatly enlarges the exposed Pt surface and increases the H-spillover capacity. The 2-butanol dehydration in H2 reveals that the H-spillover capacity is proportional to the number of Brönsted acid sites, which, in conjunction with the only water desorption in H2-TPD results, strongly suggests that the active sites for breaking the secondary C–O bond of glycerol should be Brönsted acid sites generated by the H-spillover at the interface between Pt and WO x , and the modification by the Au additive increases the number of interfacial sites, and thus enhances the 1,3-PDO yield.

Abstract:Designing efficient catalysts for glycerol hydrogenolysis to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) that involves the selective cleavage of the secondary C-O bond is a challenging task. Current Pt-WO x -based catalysts often provide low atom efficiency of W and Pt toward 1,3-PDO production due to undesired catalyst structures. Herein, we fabricate the highly-dispersed substantially uniform WO x species on inert α-Al 2 O 3 support by simple high-temperature heat-treatment, and the amount of Pt-WO x interface active sites could be adjusted by Pt loading, showing an excellent catalytic performance in glycerol hydrogenolysis at high concentration of glycerol, especially the unprecedented W efficiency (76 g 1,3-PDO ∙ g W -1 ∙ h -1 ) toward 1,3-PDO. The high catalytic efficiency is attributed to the strong interaction between the isolated WO 4 species and platinum, which could in-situ generate the Brønsted acid sites during the reaction as evidenced by IR analysis with NH 3 adsorption.

Abstract:Glycerol is a versatile platform compound that is formed in considerable amounts as a by-product of biodiesel production. The catalytic selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1, 3-propanediol (1, 3-PDO) provides a sustainable route for the synthesis of this important diol. In this study, a series of platinum-tungsten oxide (Pt-WOx) catalysts with different WOx surface densities dispersed on titanium(IV) oxide, zirconium(IV) oxide, and aluminum oxide supports were prepared and evaluated for the glycerol hydrogenolysis to 1, 3-PDO. The highest reaction activity and 1, 3-PDO selectivity were achieved at a WOx density of approximately 1.5-2.0 W.nm(-2), with all three support materials. Such a strong dependence on the surface density of WOx revealed the critical role of the dispersed WOx domains in the hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1, 3-PDO. The infrared spectra for carbon monoxide adsorption confirmed the electron transfer and strong interaction between the Pt particles and WOx domains. These phenomena were hypothesized to contribute to the superior selectivity to 1, 3-PDO over 1, 2-PDO of the supported Pt-WOx catalysts when compared with the corresponding supported Pt catalysts. The realized superior 1, 3-PDO selectivity was consistent with its higher stability on the Pt-WOx catalysts, as reflected by the lower reaction rate constant of 1, 3-PDO than those of 1, 2-PDO and glycerol obtained in their hydrogenolysis reactions. There existed a volcano-type dependence of the glycerol reaction activity on the hydrogen partial pressure. Such a dependence, together with the measured ratio (1 : 2) of the secondary to the primary C-H bonds in 1, 3-PDO in the presence of deuterium and deuterium oxide (replacing hydrogen and water, respectively), indicated that the glycerol hydrogenolysis proceeds by the kinetically relevant dehydrogenation of glycerol to the glyceraldehyde intermediate, followed by the dehydration and hydrogenation of glyceraldehyde to 1, 3-PDO over the Pt-WOx catalysts.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) is an attractive reaction due to the high demand for valorization of huge excess amounts of glycerol supply as well as the important application of 1,3-PDO in polyester industry. Nevertheless, the formation of 1,3-PDO is thermodynamically less favorable than 1,2-PDO, which necessitates the development of efficient catalysts to manipulate the reaction kinetics towards the 1,3-PDO formation. Among others, Pt-W based catalysts have shown promising activities and selectivities of 1,3-PDO although the reaction mechanism is not well addressed at the molecular level. In this short review, we have compared the performances of different Pt-W based catalysts and discussed the key factors influencing the activity and selectivity. Three possible reaction mechanisms have been discussed in terms of the synergy between Pt and WOx and the origin of acid sites. Finally, the long-term stability of the Pt-W catalysts has been discussed. We hope this review will provide useful information for the development of more efficient catalysts for this important reaction.Pt-W based catalysts demonstrate promising performances in the selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol thanks to the synergy between Pt and WOx.

A Significant Enhancement for Hydrogenolysis of Glycerol to 1,3-Propanediol over Pt/W-SiO2 Catalyst by Tungsten Oxide and Silica Interaction

Abstract:Pt-W based catalyst is one of effective catalysts for hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO), where the interaction between Pt and tungsten oxide (WOx) has been considered as a crucial factor for the activity, but interactions between WOx and supports are rarely studied. In this study, we investigated the SiO2-WOx interaction over Pt/W-SiO2 catalysts by adjusting silanols on the silica supports, and it is demonstrated that weaker WOx-SiO2 interaction benefits Pt-WOx interaction (larger Pt-WOx coordinations), which is helpful for glycerol hydrogenolysis to 1,3-PDO. For example, Pt/W-SiO2-700 (calcination at 700 degrees C for removing most of silanols in the silica support to have larger Pt-WOx coordinations) exhibits a glycerol conversion at 70.9 % with excellent 1,3-PDO selectivity of 61.3 % at a mild temperature of 140 degrees C. Experimental results and theoretical calculations support that larger Pt-WOx coordination favors hydrogen spillover to form more isolated WOx-H species, which are favorable for glycerol hydrogenolysis to 1,3-PDO.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-Propanediol (1,3-PDO) presents a sustainable approach, leveraging a bio-renewable feedstock and significantly enhancing the economic viability of biodiesel production. However, the limited selectivity toward 1,3-PDO in glycerol hydrogenolysis has hindered its widespread adoption on an industrial scale. In this work, we synthesized a series of Pt/WO3–Al2O3 catalysts using a simple wetness sequential impregnation method. Comprehensive characterization and kinetic studies revealed that the surface tungsten content of the catalyst exerted a critical and multifaceted influence on the catalytic performances. Under optimal conditions, glycerol could be selectively converted to 1,3-PDO with a yield of 43% in a fixed-bed continuous flow reactor. Furthermore, a plausible reaction mechanism for glycerol hydrogenolysis was proposed based on the correlations between catalyst structure and catalytic performance.

Abstract:Tungsten-based catalyst has been widely investigated in the field of selective hydrogenolysis of secondary CO bond, such an important yet challenging strategy, in glycerol conversion, in which the product 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) is of great value in polyester industry. Unfortunately, though it has been proved to be highly active, the identification of the intrinsic tungsten oxide active sites still remains unrevealed to date due to its complex microstructure. Herein, we incorporate atomically dispersed alumina as promoter in the context of the selective hydrogenation of glycerol and report a Pt/Al-WOx catalyst. This catalyst decidedly outperforms the unpromoted Pt/WOx, which elevates the 1,3-PDO yield to 2 times. Spectroscopy characterizations and chemisorption experiments have revealed that the high activity and selectivity of Pt/Al-WOx catalyst results from the more oxygen vacancies on WOx in-situ generation by the acceleration of atomically dispersed alumina in hydrogen atmosphere, which increases the selective adsorption of glycerol and the in-situ Brønsted acid sites for the selective activation of secondary CO bonds, thus largely augmenting the hydrogenolysis performance. This discovery not only provides the new strategy of defect engineering to enhance hydrogenolysis performance of secondary CO bond in biomass compounds, but reveals the unique role of the unsaturated coordination structure of WOx in chemoselective hydrogenolysis reactions.

Abstract:Hydrogenolysis of glycerol, a by-product in the preparation of biodiesel, to synthesize 1,3-propanediol has attracted widespread attention because of its environmental and economic benefits. How to activate the secondary hydroxyl group in glycerol to suppress the formation of 1,2-propanediol is still challenging. Pt-WO x -based catalyst has been popularly studied due to high 1,3-propanediol selectivity but its stability is unsatisfactory. Here we synthesized an oxygen vacancy-rich support (HTSO) consisting of Ti–Si composite oxide to stabilize WO x species. The glycerol conversion and 1,3-propanediol selectivity of optimized 2Pt-10WO x /HTSO-1.0 catalyst achieved 40% and 46%, respectively. Moreover, the catalytic performance remained stable over 10 reaction cycles. Based on the investigation of the structure-performance relationship of catalysts, the excellent catalytic performance was attributed to the anchoring of WO x species by oxygen vacancies, thus stabilizing the chemical valence of W. The correlation between acid sites and catalyst performance was intensively investigated. This work provides an alternative approach for preparing stable Pt-WO x -based catalysts and deepens the knowledge of the correlation between acidic sites and 1,3-propanediol selectivity.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol exhibits great prospects, while the catalysts with high selectivity and activity are still missing and need to be created urgently. Herein, we report the synthesis of hollow mesoporous Pt/WOxSiO2-TiO2 nanosphere catalysts with bi-functional interfaces synergistically for high efficiency conversion of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol. The hollow mesoporous Pt/WOxSiO2-TiO2 catalysts show a typical brick-concrete liked framework with a high surface area (179.3 m2g·1), large mesopore size (10.6 nm), uniform particle size ( 400 nm), and ultrathin shell thickness ( 75 nm). The brick anatase nanocrystals and concrete amorphous SiO2 networks can selectively rivet Pt nanoparticles and WOx nanocluster species, respectively, thus constructing two interfaces for effective adsorption, rapidly catalytic dehydration and hydrogenation processes. The hollow mesoporous Pt/WOxSiO2-TiO2 catalysts deliver a high selectivity of 53.8

Abstract:Hydrogenolysis of glycerol is an important reaction in biomass valorization, and requires efficient catalysts for selectively removing its hydroxyl groups to yield valuable chemicals, such as 1-propanol and 1,2-propanediol. In this work, we synthesized a porous and non-stoichiometric tungsten oxide (WOx) by a solvothermal method, and a serious of WOx-supported Pt and Mn ((Mn)Pt/WOx) catalysts by reduction with H2 at different temperatures. On these catalysts, the product selectivity in the glycerol hydrogenolysis was significantly influenced by the presence of the Mn species and reduction temperatures. The catalysts after reduction with H2 at lower temperatures favored the formation of 1-propanol, affording a yield of 88.0 % at 240 °C, while those reduced at higher temperatures facilitated the formation of 1,2-propanediol in a yield of 93.0 % under the same reaction conditions. Extensive analysis of these catalysts by in-situ and ex-situ characterizations showed that the high-temperature reduction led to the formation of MnWO4 on the Mn/Pt/WOx catalysts and the consequent decrease in the acidic sites and increase in the basic sites, facilitating the alkali-assisted dehydrogenation of glycerol and selective formation of 1,2-propanediol. This study provides fundamental insights into the role of the W and Mn species in tuning the selectivity of the glycerol hydrogenolysis, which will be valuable for designing catalysts towards the valorization of other biomass-based feedstocks.

Abstract:The hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol has an important industrial value but remains a great challenge. Herein, a tungsten oxide hydrate (WO3 & BULL;H2O) containing Bronsted acid sites and surface oxygen vacancies was in situ grown on the surface of alumina. The coordination chemistry of WO3 on the carrier contributes to the extremely dispersed platinum and the excellent acidic property, and much more Pt-O-W interfaces are created. The synthetic Pt/H-WO3/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst exhibited much higher catalytic performance for glycerol hydrogenolysis than Pt/C- WO3/gamma-Al2O3, in which C-WO3/gamma-Al2O3 was routinely prepared by calcining the tungsten precursor (AMT) pre-impregnated on gamma-Al2O3. The success for this strategy lies in the pre-control toward the state of WO3 on the support, and several characterization techniques were performed to reveal the structure-property relationship.

Abstract:Glycerol is an abundantly generated biomass and conversion of this compound into useful chemicals is of significant industrial value. Hydrogenolysis of glycerol produces a series of C-3 alcohols, such as 1-propanol, 2-propanol, 1,2-propanediol and 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO). Among these compounds, 1,3-PDO is an important organic intermediate to synthesize poly-trimethylene-terephthalate. Therefore, synthesis of 1,3-PDO through the selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol is a promising subject. Recently, during our investigations on the Pt/WO3/ZrO2-catalyzed glycerol hydrolysis, it was found that the acidity of the catalyst could be controlled by tungsten oxide content and the glycerol conversion was largely improved with high 1,3-PDO selectivity. The technology largely improved the synthetic efficiency and is of potential industrial application value.

Abstract:Biomass glycerol is an important raw material for many available chemicals, such as 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO). Hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-PDO is considered as a sustainable process with renewable potential application. In this paper, a series of bimetallic PdCu-KF/γ-Al2O3 were prepared and the structures of catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, TEM and CO2-TPD. By measuring the activity of the catalyst, we found that PdCu-KF/γ-Al2O3 (Pd:Cu:KF=0.05:1:0.5) can be used as an efficient catalyst for hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-PDO, with 98.3% selectivity and nearly 100% conversion (200°C, 2.5MPa initial H2 pressure, 20h).
W-doped Hierarchically Porous Silica Nanosphere Supported Platinum for Catalytic Glycerol Hydrogenolysis to 1,3-Propanediol

Abstract:As a versatile platform molecule, glycerol has been widely studied for the production of high value-added chemicals. In particular, catalytic hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) is a highly desired route for glycerol valorization. Herein, hierarchically porous SiO2 nanospheres doped in situ with W (W-HPSN) were synthesized. The effect of the addition of short-chain alcohols (methanol, ethanol, and n-propanol) as co-solvents during the synthesis of W-HPSN on the catalytic performances of the Pt/W-HPSN catalysts in glycerol hydrogenolysis to 1,3-PDO was systematically investigated. The basic physicochemical properties, the chemical states of the active components, and the acidic properties of the catalysts were characterized by a variety of techniques. Compared with the Pt/W-HPSN-H2O catalyst prepared from W-HPSN synthesized only with water as the solvent, when the alcohols were added as the co-solvents, the specific surface area of the catalyst increased to different degrees. And aside from the micropores at 1.4 nm and the mesopores at >2 nm, new micropores appeared at 1.7 nm. In glycerol hydrogenolysis, the catalysts prepared from the W-HPSN synthesized with the addition of alcohols as the co-solvents also displayed improved glycerol conversion and 1,3-PDO selectivity, and the 1,3-PDO yields were in the order of Pt/W- HPSN- Me> Pt/ W-HPSN-Pr>Pt/W-HPSN- Et> Pt/ W-HPSN-H2O. On the best Pt/W-HPSN-Me catalyst synthesized with methanol as the co-solvent, the glycerol conversion and 1,3-PDO selectivity were 88.8% and 56.3%, respectively, in comparison to 64.1% and 40.7%, respectively, on the Pt/W-HPSN-H2O catalyst. Elemental analysis showed that the Pt and W loadings on the Pt/W-HPSN- H2O and Pt/W-HPSN-Me catalysts are identical. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman, and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS) characterizations revealed that the chemical states of the Pt and W species on the Pt/W-HPSN-H2O and Pt/W-HPSN-Me catalysts are similar. CO chemisorption and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterizations demonstrated that the Pt particle size on the Pt/W-HPSN-Me catalyst is smaller than that on the Pt/W-HPSN-H2O catalyst. And the cumene cracking reaction detected more in-situ generated Bronsted acid sites on the Pt/W-HPSN-Me catalyst than on the Pt/W-HPSN-H2O catalyst in H-2 atmosphere. On the basis of these characterization results, we propose that smaller Pt particle size and more in-situ generated Bronsted acid sites are conducive to a better catalytic performance of the Pt/W-HPSN catalyst. By further optimization of the composition of the W-HPSN-Me support, at the W/Si molar ratio of 1/320 and under the reaction conditions of 423 K, 4 MPa of H-2 pressure, and reaction time of only 12 h, the Pt/W-HPSN-Me catalyst afforded enhanced glycerol conversion and 1,3-PDO selectivity of 98.7% and 58.8%, respectively, thus giving rise to an outstanding 1,3-PDO yield of 58.0%. This work shows prospect for the HPSN material as an excellent catalyst support for the hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-PDO.

Abstract:It has been documented that W-modified Pt catalysts with relatively high tungsten contents are effective for the catalytic transformation of biodiesel-derived glycerol to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO). Herein, we report a new finding that Pt/W-SBA-15 catalysts with extremely low W/Si atomic ratios (<= 1/80) exhibit excellent catalytic performance in the hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-PDO. In particular, a Pt/W-SBA-15 catalyst with the W/Si ratio of as low as 1/640 (Pt/W-SBA-15(1/640)) gave rise to the highest 1,3-PDO selectivity of 70.8% at a high glycerol conversion of 86.8% and thus afforded the highest yield of 1,3-PDO of 61.5%. A combination of characterization techniques evidenced that tungsten was homogeneously incorporated into SBA-15 in the form of isolated tetragonal WO4 and only displayed Lewis acidity. The particle size of Pt evolved in a reverse volcanic curve with the W/Si ratio, with the smallest size being observed for Pt/W-SBA-15(1/640). Control experiments indicated strong synergy between Pt nano-particles (NPs) and WO4 in the hydrogenolysis of glycerol. A probe reaction suggested that Bronsted acid sites were generated in situ on the Pt/W-SBA-15 catalysts in a H-2 atmosphere by the reaction between WO4 and spillover H atoms from the Pt NPs. It is plausible that the hydrided WO4 functioned as a highly selective active centre in the hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-PDO, whereas the Pt NPs played the role of a reservoir of spillover H atoms. Thus, a good match between the isolated WO4 and the small Pt NPs was responsible for the superior catalytic performance of Pt/W-SBA-15(1/640).

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol represents a most promising synthetic route for various specialty products in plastics, pharmaceuticals and textile industries. How to enhance chemoselectivity of 1,3-propanediol over other co-products still remains a grand challenge in this area in the past two decades. While particle size, metal-support and surface acidity have been extensively investigated for catalyst development in literature, fundamental studies on spatial and electronic configuration of "metal-solid acid" interfacial catalysts for tunable activity and selectivity are yet to be established in this field. In this context, interfacial steric hindrance and electronic transfer effect is critical for tunable activity and selectivity for metal catalysts. Therefore, in this review article, we have conducted a comprehensive and critical discussion on how steric hindrance and electronic coupling at metal-acid interfaces affect catalytic activation of internal -OH group in glycerol molecule. Selected highlights on the mechanistic investigation for ex-situ and in-situ formed Brønsted acidity over Pt-WO x and Ir-ReO x catalysts, have been discussed with experimental and computational details. The outcome of this review will provide important insights on controllable manipulation of spatial and electronic structures for selective hydrogenation reactions with broader industrial applications.

Insight into the Nature of Brönsted Acidity of Pt-(WOx)n-H Model Catalysts in Glycerol Hydrogenolysis

Abstract:In glycerol hydrogenolysis, the conventional preparation methods for Pt-WOx catalysts on active supports usually result in the coexistence of various active sites, causing complex reaction network and declining the atom efficiency of W toward 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) production. Herein, we report Pt-(WOx)(n)-H model catalyst prepared via strong metal-oxide interaction (SMOI) behavior on inert SiO2 support, which shows both high performance and W efficiency for 1,3-PDO. The W efficiency as high as 5.786 h(-1) was obtained on 2W4Pt/SiO2 at 160 degrees C under 8.0 MPa. Furthermore, these model catalysts also give the advantage in revealing the Bronsted acidity of Pt-(WOx)(n)-H sites. Structure characterizations and DFT calculation confirm the Bronsted acid strength of Pt-(WOx)(n)-H is significantly sensitive to both the polymerization and reduction degree of WOx domains. The high catalytic efficiency of 2W4Pt/SiO2 originates from the strong Bronsted acidity and its synergism with Pt metal. The correlation between Bronsted acidity and electronic state of Pt-(WOx)(n)-H is also discussed by electron density difference analysis and XPS. (C) 2020 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol is a highly important reaction for both improving the profitability of biodiesel and valorization of biomass. While intensive research efforts have been devoted to enhancing the catalytic activity and selectivity, little is focused on the stability although the latter is of paramount importance to practical applications. In this work, we investigated the stability of Pt/WO3/Al2O3 and observed a continuous deactivation trend during a 700 h time-on-stream run. Neither the leaching of active W nor the coking was responsible for the deactivation. Instead, XRD, HAADF-STEM and CO chemisorption results clearly showed the occurrence of significant aggregation of Pt particles, which caused a remarkable decrease of Pt-WO x interfacial sites. As a consequence, strong Brönsted acid sites which were in situ formed by H2 dissociation at the Pt-WOx interfacial sites were reduced, leading to the deactivation of the catalyst.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrogenolysis of biomass-derived glycerol to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) represents an important process for the sustainable production of value-added chemicals. However, there is a dearth of understanding of the effect of the polymorph of the support on this reaction. Herein, two Pt-WOx/TiO2 catalysts supported on rutile TiO2 (r-TiO2) and anatase TiO2 (a-TiO2) polymorphs were prepared to investigate the crystal phase effect of TiO2 on the structural property and catalytic performance in glycerol hydrogenolysis. The TiO2 polymorph was identified to impose profound effects on the size of the Pt nanoparticles (NPs) and the dispersion and location of the WOx species, which originated from the discrepancies in the crystal structures between the PtO2 and the TiO2 polymorphs and the discrepancies in the interactions of WOx with different TiO2 polymorphs. In glycerol hydrogenolysis, the Pt-WOx/r-TiO2 catalyst gave a 1,3-PDO selectivity of 51.2% at a glycerol conversion to liquid products of 74.5%, yielding 38.1% of 1,3-PDO. In contrast, the Pt-WOx/a-TiO2 catalyst showed much inferior glycerol conversion and 1,3-PDO selectivity, yielding only 1.0% of 1,3PDO under identical reaction conditions. The superior catalytic performance of the Pt-WOx/r-TiO2 catalyst is attributed to the rTiO2 polymorph that facilitates a faster hydrogen spillover than the a-TiO2 polymorph from the Pt NPs to the reaction intermediate on the WOx species, which is substantiated by an even higher 1,3-PDO yield of 44.8% over the physically mixed Pt/r-TiO2 + WOx/r-TiO2 catalyst. This work demonstrates the critical role of the polymorph of the TiO2 support in the design of efficacious Pt-WOx- based catalysts for glycerol hydrogenolysis to 1,3-PDO.
