Abstract:Tidal wetlands play a critical role in emitting greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere; our understanding of the intricate interplay between natural processes and human activities shaping their biogeochemistry and GHG emissions remains lacking. In this study, we delve into the spatiotemporal dynamics and key drivers of the GHG emissions from five tidal wetlands in the Scheldt Estuary by focusing on the interactive impacts of salinity and water pollution, two factors exhibiting contrasting gradients in this estuarine system: pollution escalates as salinity declines. Our findings reveal a marked escalation in GHG emissions when moving upstream, primarily attributed to increased concentrations of organic matter and nutrients, coupled with reduced levels of dissolved oxygen and pH. These low water quality conditions not only promote methanogenesis and denitrification to produce CH 4 and N 2 O, respectively, but also shift the carbonate equilibria towards releasing more CO 2 . As a result, the most upstream freshwater wetland was the largest GHG emitter with a global warming potential around 35 to 70 times higher than the other wetlands. When moving seaward along a gradient of decreasing urbanization and increasing salinity, wetlands become less polluted and are characterized by lower concentrations of NO 3 − , TN and TOC, which induces stronger negative impact of elevated salinity on the GHG emissions from the saline wetlands. Consequently, these meso-to polyhaline wetlands released considerably smaller amounts of GHGs. These findings emphasize the importance of integrating management strategies, such as wetland restoration and pollution prevention, that address both natural salinity gradients and human-induced water pollution to effectively mitigate GHG emissions from tidal wetlands.

Abstract:Gaseous carbon exchange at the water-air interface of rivers and lakes is an essential process for regional and global carbon cycle assessments. Many studies have shown that rivers surrounding urban landscapes can be hotspots for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Here we investigated the variability of diffusive GHG (methane [CH4] and carbon dioxide [CO2]) emissions from rivers in different landscapes (i.e., urban, agricultural and mixed) and from lakes in Suzhou, a highly urbanized region in eastern China. GHG emissions in the Suzhou metropolitan water network followed a typical seasonal pattern, with the highest fluxes in summer, and were primarily influenced by temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration. Surprisingly, lakes were emission hotspots, with mean CH4 and CO2 fluxes of 2.80 and 128.89 mg m-2 h-1, respectively, translating to a total CO2-equivalent flux of 0.21 g CO2-eq m-2 d-1. The global warming potential of urban and mixed rivers (0.19 g CO2-eq m-2 d-1) was comparable to that for lakes, but about twice the value for agricultural rivers (0.10 g CO2-eq m-2 d-1). Factors related to the high GHG emissions in lakes included hypoxic water conditions and an adequate nutrient supply. Riverine CH4 emissions were primarily associated with the concentrations of total dissolved solids (TDS), ammonia‑nitrogen and chlorophyll a. CO2 emissions in rivers were mainly closely related to TDS, with suitable conditions allowing rapid organic matter decomposition. Compared with other types of rivers, urban rivers had more available organic matter and therefore higher CO2 emissions. Overall, this study emphasizes the need for a deeper understanding of the impact of GHG emissions from different water types on global warming in rapidly urbanizing regions. Flexible management measures are urgently needed to mitigate CO2 and CH4 emissions more effectively in the context of the shrinking gap between urban and rural areas with growing socio-economic development.
DOM Associates with Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Chinese Rivers under Diverse Land Uses

Abstract:Growing evidence indicates that rivers are hotspots of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and play multiple roles in the global carbon budget. However, the roles of terrestrial carbon from land use in river GHG emissions remain largely unknown. We studied the microbial composition, dissolved organic matter (DOM) properties, and GHG emission responses to different landcovers in rivers (n = 100). The bacterial community was mainly constrained by land-use intensity, whereas the fungal community was mainly controlled by DOM chemical composition (e.g., terrestrial DOM with high photoreactivity). Anthropogenic stressors (e.g., land-use intensity, gross regional domestic product, and total population) were the main factors affecting chromophoric DOM (CDOM). DOM biodegradability exhibited a positive correlation with CDOM and contributed to microbial activity for DOM transformation. Variations in CO2 and CH4 emissions were governed by the biodegradation or photomineralization of dissolved organic carbon derived from autotrophic DOM and were indirectly affected by land use via changes in DOM properties and water chemistry. Because the GHG emissions of rivers offset some of the climatic benefits of terrestrial carbon (or ocean) sinks, intensified urban land use inevitably alters carbon cycling and changes the regional microclimate.
Greenhouse gas emissions hotspots and drivers of urban freshwater bodies in areas of the Yangtze River delta, China

Abstract:In the modern era, urban freshwater bodies play a significant role in global carbon (C) budgeting, therefore, impacting climate change under rising global mean temperature. However, the trend, magnitude, and drivers of Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in these urban freshwater bodies of China remain uncertain. Present study investigated temporal changes in GHG emissions in urban water bodies, including artificial lakes, reservoirs, aquaculture ponds, and rivers, within a year in Nanjing city in the areas of the Yangtze River delta of China. In addition, meteorological and hydrochemical parameters were measured to elucidate the key drivers of GHG emissions. The results showed that the average annual flux of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) in aquaculture ponds was estimated to be 1355.6 mg CO2 m‐2 day‐1 and 116.6 mg CH4 m‐2 day‐1, followed by that of artificial lakes were 1172.2 mg CO2 m‐2 day‐1 and 44.1 mg CH4 m‐2 day‐1, rivers reached 775.9 mg CO2 m‐2 day‐1 and 23.9 mg CH4 m‐2 day‐1 and reservoirs were 170.1 mg CO2 m‐2 day‐1 and 7.2 mg CH4 m‐2 day‐1, respectively. The results further suggest that although artificial lakes and aquaculture ponds occupied only 23% of the cumulative area under lakes and ponds in the Yangtze River delta, contribute approximately 43%, about 27.5 Gg C, of total fluxes. Furthermore, high concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and low dissolved oxygen (DO) coincided with the high GHG emissions. The study suggests that DO, DOC, temperature, and wind speed are the key factors impacting the potential of GHG emissions in urban freshwater ecosystems. Strategic mitigation measures in the vicinity of the urban freshwater bodies could efficiently reduce carbon emissions in the future.

Abstract:Coastal saline wetlands are recognized as prominent sources of greenhouse gas emissions. However, insufficient attention has been paid to the effect of coastal wetlands in mitigating global warming caused by greenhouse gases in China. This study aims to investigate how vegetation and soil parameters affect greenhouse gas emissions in a coastal saline wetland. Fluxes of CO2, CH4, and N2O were measured simultaneously in situ using the closed static chamber technique in four different coastal tidal flats, namely, mud flat, Spartina alterniflora flat, Suaeda glauca flat, and grass flat. The measurements were obtained from September 2012 to August 2013 in the Yancheng coastal wetland, southeast China. The average fluxes across all seasons and flats varied from 10.7 to 2297.6 mg CO2 m(-2) h(-1) (ecosystem respiration), from -0.368 to 4.959 mg CH4 m(-2) h(-1), and from 1.5 to 65.7 mu g N2O m(-2) h(-1). Higher CO2 and CH4 fluxes were observed during the summer and autumn seasons. However, the seasonal change of the N2O fluxes was complicated. For the S. alterniflora and grass flats, the highest emissions were observed during summer. For the mud and S. glauca flats, the emissions peaked during winter. The spatial variations of the three greenhouse gas fluxes in the coastal saline wetland primarily depended on vegetation type. The greenhouse gas fluxes from the three tidal flats with vegetation covers (S, alterniflora, S. glauca, and grass flats) were higher than those from the mud flat. Higher CO2 emissions were observed in the S. alterniflora flat than those in the other flats because of the higher carbon sequestration rate, together with higher net primary production and aboveground biomass. However, CH4 and N2O emissions were highest in the grass flat, followed by the S. alterniflora flat. The effects of tidal flats on the CH4 and N2O emissions differed according to the season. The S. alterniflora invasion increased the CO2 emission while slightly lowering the CH4 fluxes, compared with that of native plant communities dominated by Phragmites. Abstract:Urban rivers are recognized as significant sources of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Despite this, the influence of land use and urbanization on carbon emissions across rural-urban rivers at the watershed scale has been insufficiently explored. This study utilized in-situ surveys of the Liao River in northern China to investigate the spatial and temporal variations of CH4 and CO2 emissions and their relationship with urbanization and its potential controlling factors. The findings revealed that CH4 emissions peaked in fall, whereas CO2 emissions were highest in summer. The average fluxes of CH4 and CO2 at the water-gas interface were 1387.22 ± 2474.98 µmol·m-2·d-1 and 52.78 ± 54.44 mmol·m-2·d-1, respectively. Water quality parameters accounted for 80.49 % of the total variation in CH4 and CO2 concentrations and fluxes. Structural equation modeling indicated that TN, TP, DTC, and conductivity had direct effects on riverine CH4 and CO2 emissions, with standardized direct effects of 0.50 and 0.49, respectively. Nutrient input emerged as the primary driver, increasing CH4 and CO2 concentrations and fluxes, particularly in urban-adjacent river sections likely receiving higher nutrient loads. This study underscores that land use and urbanization indirectly influence riverine CH4 and CO2 emissions by modifying nutrient inputs. Effective land use management and nutrient input control are recommended strategies to mitigate riverine CH4 and CO2 emissions.
Salinity effects on greenhouse gas emissions from wetland soils are contingent upon hydrologic setting: a microcosm experiment

Abstract:Coastal forested wetlands provide important ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, nutrient retention, and flood protection, but they are also important sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Human appropriation of surface water and extensive ditching and draining of coastal plain landscapes are interacting with rising sea levels to increase the frequency and magnitude of saltwater incursion into formerly freshwater coastal wetlands. Both hydrologic change and saltwater incursion are expected to alter carbon and nutrient cycling in coastal forested wetlands. We performed a full factorial experiment in which we exposed intact soil cores from a coastal forested wetland to experimental marine salt treatments and two hydrologic treatments. We measured the resulting treatment effects on the emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) over 112 days. Salinity effects were compared across four treatments to isolate the effects of increases in ionic strength from the impact of adding a terminal electron acceptor (SO42−). We compared control treatments (DI addition), to artificial saltwater (ASW, target salinity of 5 parts per thousand) and to two treatments that added sulfate alone (SO42−, at the concentration found in 5 ppt saltwater) and saltwater with the sulfate removed (ASW-SO42−, with the 5 ppt target salinity maintained by adding additional NaCl). We found that all salt treatments suppressed CO2 production, in both drought and flooded treatments. Contrary to our expectations, CH4 fluxes from our flooded cores increased between 300 and 1200% relative to controls in the ASW and ASW-SO42− treatments respectively. In the drought treatments, we saw virtually no CH4 release from any core, while artificial seawater with sulfate increased N2O fluxes by 160% above DI control. In contrast, salt and sulfate decreased N2O fluxes by 72% in our flooded treatments. Our results indicate that salinization of forested wetlands of the coastal plain may have important climate feedbacks resulting from enhanced greenhouse gas emissions and that the magnitude and direction of these emissions are contingent upon wetland hydrology.

Abstract:Plant community succession can impact greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the soil by altering the soil carbon and nitrogen cycles. However, the effects of community landscape diversity on soil GHG emissions have rarely been fully understood. Therefore, this study investigated how plant landscape diversity, structure type, and species composition, affect soil GHG emissions in a riparian zone. Soil GHG emissions were assessed by measuring the air samples collected from four study sites, which have different plant community structure types and species compositions (natural sites with complex plants, landscaped sites with fruit trees and grasses, untended sites with ruderals, and farmland sites), using the static chamber method. Significant differences were observed in soil carbon dioxide (CO2; p < 0.001), nitrous oxide (N2O; p < 0.001), and methane (CH4; p = 0.005) emissions. The untended site with ruderals exhibited the highest CO2 emissions, while N2O emissions increased as plant community diversity decreased. All sites acted as sinks for CH4 emissions, with decreased CH4 uptake efficiency in more diverse plant communities. The Mantel test and variance partitioning analysis revealed soil microbial biomass as an indirect influencer of GHG emissions. This study could help predict soil GHG emissions and their global warming potential under future changes in the island riparian zones.

Abstract:Although saline aquatic ecosystems are significant emitters of greenhouse gases (GHGs), dynamic changes in GHGs at the sediment-water interface remain unclear. The present investigation carried out a total of four sampling campaigns in Daihai Lake, which is a eutrophic saline lake situated in a semi-arid area of northern China. The aim of this study was to investigate the spatio-temporal dynamics of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) fluxes at the sediment-water interface and the influencing factors. The mean concentrations of porewater CO2 and CH4 were 44.98 ± 117.99 μmol L-1 and 124.36 ± 97.00 μmol L-1, far exceeding those in water column of 11.14 ± 2.16 μmol L-1 and 0.33 ± 0.23 μmol L-1, respectively. The CO2 and CH4 fluxes at the sediment-water interface (FS-WCO2 and FS-WCH4) exhibited significant spatial and temporal variations, with mean values of 9.24 ± 13.84 μmol m-2 d-1 and 3.53 ± 4.36 μmol m-2 d-1, respectively, indicating that sediment is the source of CO2 and CH4 in the water column. However, CO2 and CH4 fluxes were much lower than those measured at the water-air interface in a companion study (17.54 ± 14.54 mmol m-2d-1 and 0.50 ± 0.50 mmol m-2d-1, respectively), indicating that the diffusive flux of gases at the sediment-water interface was not the primary source of CO2 and CH4 emissions to the atmosphere. Regression and correlation analyses revealed that salinity (Sal) and nutrients were the most influential factors on porewater gas concentrations, and that gas fluxes increased with increasing gas concentrations and porosity. The microbial activity of sediment is greatly affected by nutrients and Sal. Additionally, Sal has the ability to regulate biogeochemical processes, thereby regulating GHG emissions. The present investigation addresses the research gap concerning GHG emissions from sediments of eutrophic saline lakes. The study suggests that controlling the eutrophication and salinization of lakes could be a viable strategy for reducing carbon emissions from lakes. However, further investigations are required to establish more conclusive results.

Patterns and environmental drivers of greenhouse gas fluxes in the coastal wetlands of China: A systematic review and synthesis

Abstract:Coastal wetlands play an increasingly important role in regulating greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes and thus affecting climate change. However, the overall magnitude, trend, and environmental drivers of GHG fluxes in these wetlands of China remain uncertain. Herein, we synthesized data from 70 publications involving 187 field observations to identify patterns and drivers of GHG fluxes across coastal wetlands in China. Average methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions (ecosystem respiration) across coastal wetlands were estimated as 2.20±0.31 mg·m-2·h-1, 16.44±2.96 μg·m-2·h-1, and 388.76±42.28 mg·m-2·h-1, respectively. GHG emissions varied with tidal inundation, where CH4 and CO2 emissions during tidal inundation were lower than during ebbing. CH4 and CO2 emissions from wetlands decreased linearly with increasing latitude, while N2O did not. CH4 fluxes were positively related to air temperature and aboveground biomass, and CO2 emissions were positively related to soil organic carbon. N2O fluxes were lower with increasing soil pH, and CH4 and CO2 emissions were greater with increasing soil moisture. Based on the results of sustained-flux global warming potential and sustained-flux global cooling potential models, our paper indicate that the fluxes of CH4 and N2O in coastal wetlands have a positive feedback to global warming, which is mainly driven by the CH4 emission. Our synthesis improved understanding of the roles of coastal wetlands in the ecosystem C cycle under global change. We suggest that long-term field observations of GHG fluxes across a wider range of spatiotemporal scales are urgently required to improve the prediction accuracy in GHG fluxes and the assessment of net GHG balance and its contribution to the GWP of coastal wetlands.

Abstract:Although coastal wetlands play an important role in governing the atmospheric concentrations of CO2, CH4, and N2O, thus control the global warming, research of the greenhouse gas emissions conducted in the coastal wetlands were not well-documented because of the difficulty in fieldwork in these harsh environments, and the complicated controlling factors affecting the greenhouse gas emissions. The temporal and spatial variations of CO2, CH4, and N2O were investigated simultaneously in the coastal saline wetland in North Jiangsu during the period from April, 2014 to March, 2014, using the closed static dark chamber method. And the results showed that seasonal variations of CO2, CH4, and N2O were higher in summer, and lower CO2 and N2O fluxes were observed in winter, while for CH4 in spring, it presented the sink in the coastal wetland. The annual average CO2 emission derived from the Spartina alterniflora flat (SAF) was the highest, with the value of (766.3±496.9) mg·(m2·h)-1, and for CH4 and N2O, the highest values were found in Phragmites australis flat (PAF), with the values of (0.420±0.900) mg·(m2·h)-1 and (17.4±5.0) μg·(m2·h)-1, respectively. The bare mud flat (BF) presented the sink of CH4, and the source of CO2 and N2O, with the lowest emission rates across all the tidal flats. The global warming potential (GWP) from the coastal wetlands in north Jiangsu was observed higher in SAF[68841.280 kg·(hm2·a)-1], which was 1.41 and 3.02 times higher compared with those of PAF and SGF, the GWP of BF was the lowest, with the value of 5002.100 kg·(hm2·a)-1. Furthermore, significant correlations were found between CO2 fluxes and temperature, including air temperature (AT), soil temperature (ST), and temperature inside the chamber (CT), however, for CH4 and N2O, the correlations were not so obvious. Above all, the temporal variations of CO2, CH4, and N2O were mainly controlled by the temperature and characteristics of vegetation, the spatial variations of CO2, CH4, and N2O were determined by the characteristics of vegetation. Furthermore, we may safely draw the conclusion that the invasive S. alterniflora increased the global warming potential dominantly through increasing the CO2 emission rates, compared with the native plant.
Effects of Semi-Lunar Tidal Cycling on Soil Co2 and Ch4 Emissions: A Case Study in the Yangtze River Estuary, China

Abstract:Coastal wetlands, commonly inundated by periodic tides, have been recognized as important sources of greenhouse gases. However, little is known of tidal effects on in situ soil CO2 and CH4 emissions in a semi-lunar tidal cycle consisting of neap and spring tide periods (NTP and STP). A field study was conducted in the Yangtze River estuary to investigate temporal variations of soil CO2 and CH4 emissions along with the transition from NTP to STP in a semi-lunar tidal cycle. Soil moisture, salinity and sulfate were significantly greater in STP than in NTP, whereas soil redox potential had an opposite pattern because of frequent tidal inundation. Soil CO2 and CH4 effluxes decreased significantly in STP, being 29–34 and 28–35 %, respectively, compared with those in NTP. The decrease in soil CO2 effluxes was likely attributable to two causes, an anaerobic environment inhibiting CO2 production, and tidal inundation impeding CO2 diffusion from the soil into the atmosphere. The inhibition of methanogenesis by increased soil salinity and sulfate was likely the primary reason of the decrease in CH4 effluxes during STP. Our results suggest that the effects of semi-lunar tidal cycling significantly reduce soil carbon emissions, which may be one of the potential mechanisms underlying strong carbon accumulation in wetlands of the Yangtze River estuary.

Abstract:Wetland systems play important roles in the issues of global warming. That is because wetlands can not only intake carbon and nitrogen in the plants and sediments, but could also release carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) to the atmosphere during the microbial decomposition processes in the water. In the past, greenhouse gases (GHGs) were measured mostly by using the manual sampling technique; however, it is difficult to measure the diurnal variation of greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, a floating chamber used to collect GHGs, which were then in-site monitored with a continuous GHG analyzer, through a Teflon tube connected to the top of the chamber was designed. The data for seasonal and diurnal variations of GHGs, emission fluxes of GHGs, and equivalent carbon dioxide emissions (CO2-e) were measured to explore the extent of a saline mangrove constructed wetland contributing to global warming. In addition, the correlation and regression analysis among greenhouse gas emissions, water quality, and other environmental factors were analyzed statistically. The results of continuous monitoring of GHGs showed that the concentrations of CO2 emitted from a saline mangrove constructed wetland ranged from 383.5 ± 25.9 to 476.8 ± 24.2 ppm. The diurnal variation of GHG concentrations was significant, which showed that the GHG concentrations in the daytime were generally lower than those at nighttime. The emissions of methane (CH4) from the wetland were monitored in a range between 3.7 ± 1.4 and 28.6 ± 7.6 ppm, while the concentrations of nitrous oxide (N2O) emitted from the wetlands ranged from 3.1 ± 2.6 to 0.9 ± 0.6 ppm. Hence, the diurnal variations of CH4 and N2O concentrations showed higher values in the daytime than those at nighttime. The correlation analytical results among GHG emissions, water quality, and other environmental factors presented that the emission fluxes of CO2 and BOD5 were positively correlated, but a negative correlation was shown for global solar radiation (GSR). Moreover, the concentrations of CH4 and N2O had moderately positive correlation with both air temperature and water temperature.

Abstract:Hypoxia and sediment particle resuspension (SPR) alter the biogeochemical cycle of estuarine and coastal seas, which in turn affects the production and emission of methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) greenhouse gases (GHGs) in estuaries. Despite the importance of CH4, N2O and CO2 in estuarine ecosystems, little is known about their magnitude and spatiotemporal variation under the combined influence of hypoxia and SPR. This study utilized continuous mooring observations to investigate the temporal and spatial variations of GHGs before and after hypoxia in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE). The results showed that the concentration of GHGs in the water column increased significantly following hypoxia as compared to its absence. The synergistic effect of SPR and hypoxia significantly enhances GHGs production and accumulation in bottom water. Anaerobic mineralization of organic matter (OM) in an environment with severely low dissolved oxygen (DO) is the primary determinant for increased CH4 concentration, while OM and CH4 oxidation are the main drivers for maintaining high CO2 concentration in subsurface water. Hypoxic development enhanced denitrification N2O production in the water column. The presence of SPR enhanced oxygen-consuming coupled hypoxia significantly stimulated the increase of CH4, N2O and CO2 concentrations in the water column. Hypoxic development results in an increased water-air GHGs flux, but this effect may be masked by runoff plumes with high GHGs concentrations in the regions near the river outlets. This study highlights that hypoxia leads to significant increases in anaerobic GHGs production and subsequent emissions from estuarine water columns.

Abstract:Changes in sea-level rise and precipitation are altering patterns of coastal wetland hydrology and salinization. We conducted paired laboratory (20 weeks) and field (15 weeks) marine salt addition experiments to disentangle the effects of hydrology (permanent versus intermittent flooding) and elevated marine salts (sulfate versus other salt ions) on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from freshwater forested wetland soils. Marine salt additions strongly affected GHG emissions in both experiments, but the magnitude, and even the direction, of GHG responses depended on the hydrologic context in which marine salt exposure occurred. Under permanent flooding, carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes were unaffected by marine salts, whereas methane (CH4) fluxes were significantly suppressed by the addition of sulfate (as K2SO4) both with and without marine salts. In contrast, in intermittently flooded field and laboratory soils elevated salinity reduced carbon mineralization and CO2 fluxes, but enhanced CH4 fluxes relative to both controls and treatments with elevated sulfate. Thus, elevated salinity or alkalinity (and not sulfate) controlled both gaseous carbon fluxes under intermittent flooding. Nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes had contrasting responses in the field and laboratory. In the laboratory, N2O fluxes were not significantly related to chemical treatment but increased with porewater ammonium concentrations, which increased in salinity treatments via cation exchange. In intermittently flooded field conditions, elevated salinity strongly suppressed N2O fluxes because ammonium did not accumulate in porewater; it was likely lost through advection, dispersion, or plant uptake. Understanding dynamic hydrologic and vegetation patterns across wetland landscapes will be critical for predicting both the magnitude and direction of wetland GHG responses to increasing marine salt across broad spatial scales.

Abstract:Coastal wetlands are essential sources of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emission, and lots of them are invaded by Spartina alterniflora across different climate zones. We chose Jiuduansha wetland as a typical wetland ecosystem with minimal human activities to study the impacts and interactions between S. alterniflora invasion, soil functional microorganisms, and GHGs emission. Our findings indicated that in comparison to the mudflat and S. mariqueter habitat, the S. alterniflora invasion increased soil carbon dioxide (CO2) emission, which was highly positively related to aboveground biomass, soil organic carbon (SOC), and the ammonium‑nitrogen (NH4+-N) concentration, but negatively related to the nitrate‑nitrogen (NO3–-N) concentration. The relative abundances of soil C-decomposing bacteria increased in S. alterniflora habitat compared with S. mariqueter habitat. Compared with the P. australis habitat, S. alterniflora invasion reduced soil CO2 emission, which was negatively related to salinity. The relative abundances of soil C-fixing bacteria (phylum Chloroflexi) and functional genes (acsA-F and rbcL) decreased in S. alterniflora habitat. Moreover, the S. alterniflora invasion increased soil methane (CH4) emission compared with the S. mariqueter and P. australis habitats, which was positively related to aboveground biomass, SOC and NH4+-N concentration, and negatively related to the NO3–-N concentration. Besides, the relative abundances of CH4 oxidation functional genes were decreased in S. alterniflora habitat compared with the S. mariqueter and P. australis habitats. Meanwhile, the oxidation of CH4 to methanol was mainly regulated by mmoX gene at our study site. Thus, the soil CO2 and CH4 emissions after S. alterniflora invasion were regulated by soil environmental factors and soil C-fixing, C-decomposing, and CH4 oxidation functional microorganisms. Our results are helpful to better understand the mechanisms involved in the impacts of S. alterniflora invasions on GHG emissions in coastal wetlands.
