Abstract:The eutrophication, hypoxia and coastal acidification are attracting more and more attention. In this study, inorganic carbon parameters, including dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total alkalinity (TA) and calculated partial pressure of CO 2 ( p CO 2 ), obtained from a summer cruise in August, 2009, were used to investigate their integrated response to biological processes accompanying the oxygen depletion in the areas off the Changjiang Estuary. According to the observations, the typical hypoxia occurred in the bottom water just outside the Changjiang Estuary with Dissolved Oxygen (DO) lower than 2.00 mg L −1 . The biological uptake in the surface water and the decomposition of organic matter in the bottom water were fully coupled with each other. The high concentration of Chl_ a (Chl_ a = 10.9 μg L −1 ) and DO (9.25 mg L −1 ), profoundly decreased DIC concentration (1828 μmol kg −1 ) and elevated pH (8.42) was observed in the surface water. The correspondingly increased DIC and depletion of oxygen were observed in the bottom water. The semi-quantitative analysis proved that the locally-produced phytoplankton, determined by primary productivity, was deposited to the bottom and contributed about 76% of total amount of the organic carbon decomposition in the bottom. However, in the bottom hypoxia (DO = 2.05 mg L −1 ) area observed in the Southern Zhejiang coastal water, the responding patterns of inorganic carbon parameters deviated from the previous one. The expanding of Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW), the adding of Hangzhou Bay water (with high DIC concentration) and Coastal Current together modify the DIC background value in this area, and the local degeneration and upwelling process may also help to offset the local DIC removed by net biological uptake in surface water. In addition, when the mixing occurring in autumn, which may break the summer stratification, the excess release of high DIC in the bottom water to the subsurface water could have an important influence on coastal acidification and the CO 2 uptake capacity in this area.
Submarine Groundwater and River Discharges Affect Carbon Cycle in a Highly Urbanized and River-Dominated Coastal Area

Abstract:Riverine carbon flux to the ocean has been considered in estimating coastal carbon budgets, but submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) has long been ignored. In this paper, the effects of both SGD and river discharges on the carbon cycle were investigated in the Guangdong-HongKong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), a highly urbanized and river-dominated coastal area in China. SGD-derived nitrate (NO 3 – ), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) fluxes were estimated using a radium model to be (0.73–16.4) × 10 8 g/d, (0.60–9.94) × 10 9 g/d, and (0.77–3.29) × 10 10 g/d, respectively. SGD-derived DOC and DIC fluxes are ∼2 times as great as riverine inputs, but SGD-derived NO 3 – flux is one-fourth of the riverine input. The additional nitrate and carbon inputs can stimulate new primary production, enhance biological pump efficiency, and affect the balance of the carbonate system in marine water. We found that SGD in the studied system is a potential net source of atmospheric CO 2 with a flux of 1.46 × 10 9 g C/d, and river, however, is a potential net sink of atmospheric CO 2 with a flux of 3.75 × 10 9 g C/d during the dry winter season. Two conceptual models were proposed illustrating the major potential processes of the carbon cycle induced by SGD and river discharges. These findings from this study suggested that SGD, as important as rivers, plays a significant role in the carbon cycle and should be considered in carbon budget estimations at regional and global scales future.

Patterns and environmental drivers of greenhouse gas fluxes in the coastal wetlands of China: A systematic review and synthesis

Abstract:Coastal wetlands play an increasingly important role in regulating greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes and thus affecting climate change. However, the overall magnitude, trend, and environmental drivers of GHG fluxes in these wetlands of China remain uncertain. Herein, we synthesized data from 70 publications involving 187 field observations to identify patterns and drivers of GHG fluxes across coastal wetlands in China. Average methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions (ecosystem respiration) across coastal wetlands were estimated as 2.20±0.31 mg·m-2·h-1, 16.44±2.96 μg·m-2·h-1, and 388.76±42.28 mg·m-2·h-1, respectively. GHG emissions varied with tidal inundation, where CH4 and CO2 emissions during tidal inundation were lower than during ebbing. CH4 and CO2 emissions from wetlands decreased linearly with increasing latitude, while N2O did not. CH4 fluxes were positively related to air temperature and aboveground biomass, and CO2 emissions were positively related to soil organic carbon. N2O fluxes were lower with increasing soil pH, and CH4 and CO2 emissions were greater with increasing soil moisture. Based on the results of sustained-flux global warming potential and sustained-flux global cooling potential models, our paper indicate that the fluxes of CH4 and N2O in coastal wetlands have a positive feedback to global warming, which is mainly driven by the CH4 emission. Our synthesis improved understanding of the roles of coastal wetlands in the ecosystem C cycle under global change. We suggest that long-term field observations of GHG fluxes across a wider range of spatiotemporal scales are urgently required to improve the prediction accuracy in GHG fluxes and the assessment of net GHG balance and its contribution to the GWP of coastal wetlands.
Plant biomass and soil organic carbon are main factors influencing dry-season ecosystem carbon rates in the coastal zone of the Yellow River Delta

Abstract:Coastal wetlands are considered as a significant sink of global carbon due to their tremendous organic carbon storage. Coastal CO2 and CH4 flux rates play an important role in regulating atmospheric CO2 and CH4 concentrations. However, the relative contributions of vegetation, soil properties, and spatial structure on dry-season ecosystem carbon (C) rates (net ecosystem CO2 exchange, NEE; ecosystem respiration, ER; gross ecosystem productivity, GEP; and CH4) remain unclear at a regional scale. Here, we compared dry-season ecosystem C rates, plant, and soil properties across three vegetation types from 13 locations at a regional scale in the Yellow River Delta (YRD). The results showed that the Phragmites australis stand had the greatest NEE (-1365.4 μmol m-2 s-1), ER (660.2 μmol m-2 s-1), GEP (-2025.5 μmol m-2 s-1) and acted as a CH4 source (0.27 μmol m-2 s-1), whereas the Suaeda heteroptera and Tamarix chinensis stands uptook CH4 (-0.02 to -0.12 μmol m-2 s-1). Stepwise multiple regression analysis demonstrated that plant biomass was the main factor explaining all of the investigated carbon rates (GEP, ER, NEE, and CH4); while soil organic carbon was shown to be the most important for explaining the variability in the processes of carbon release to the atmosphere, i.e., ER and CH4. Variation partitioning results showed that vegetation and soil properties played equally important roles in shaping the pattern of C rates in the YRD. These results provide a better understanding of the link between ecosystem C rates and environmental drivers, and provide a framework to predict regional-scale ecosystem C fluxes under future climate change.

Abstract:Our synthesis study shows that China's coastal wetlands are highly productive and have high carbon sequestration capacity on a per‐unit‐area basis. Meanwhile, anthropogenic activities, including human disturbance and restoration in the coastal wetland, can substantially alter the carbon sequestration capacity, and the effect of the anthropogenic perturbation in mangroves was more extensive than that in salt marshes. Conserving all remaining intact coastal wetland in China will increase carbon sequestration to ~1.0 Tg C annually and protecting the remaining coastal wetland from degradation and restoring the degraded coastal wetland can effectively increase carbon sequestration. Coastal wetlands play an important role in regulating atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and contribute significantly to climate change mitigation. However, climate change, reclamation, and restoration have been causing substantial changes in coastal wetland areas and carbon exchange in China during recent decades. Here we compiled a carbon flux database consisting of 15 coastal wetland sites to assess the magnitude, patterns, and drivers of carbon fluxes and to compare fluxes among contrasting natural, disturbed, and restored wetlands. The natural coastal wetlands have the average net ecosystem exchange of CO2 (NEE) of −577 g C m−2 year−1, with −821 g C m−2 year−1 for mangrove forests and −430 g C m−2 year−1 for salt marshes. There are pronounced latitudinal patterns for carbon dioxide exchange of natural coastal wetlands: NEE increased whereas gross primary production (GPP) and respiration of ecosystem decreased with increasing latitude. Distinct environmental factors drive annual variations of GPP between mangroves and salt marshes; temperature was the dominant controlling factor in salt marshes, while temperature, precipitation, and solar radiation were co‐dominant in mangroves. Meanwhile, both anthropogenic reclamation and restoration had substantial effects on coastal wetland carbon fluxes, and the effect of the anthropogenic perturbation in mangroves was more extensive than that in salt marshes. Furthermore, from 1980 to 2020, anthropogenic reclamation of China's coastal wetlands caused a carbon loss of ~3720 Gg C, while the mangrove restoration project during the period of 2021–2025 may switch restored coastal wetlands from a carbon source to carbon sink with a net carbon gain of 73 Gg C. The comparison of carbon fluxes among these coastal wetlands can improve our understanding of how anthropogenic perturbation can affect the potentials of coastal blue carbon in China, which has implications for informing conservation and restoration strategies and efforts of coastal wetlands.

Abstract:The carbonate chemistry in river-dominated marginal seas is highly heterogeneous, and there is ongoing debate regarding the definition of atmospheric CO 2 source or sink. On this basis, we investigated the carbonate chemistry and air-sea CO 2 fluxes in a hotspot estuarine area: the Changjiang Estuary during winter and summer. The spatial characteristics of the carbonate system were influenced by water mixing of three end-members in winter, including the Changjiang freshwater with low total alkalinity (TA) concentration, the less saline Yellow Sea Surface Water with high TA, and the saline East China Sea (ECS) offshore water with moderate TA. While in summer with increased river discharge, the carbonate system was regulated by simplified two end-member mixing between the Changjiang freshwater and the ECS offshore water. By performing the end-member mixing model on DIC variations in the river plume region, significant biological addition of DIC was found in winter with an estimation of −120 ± 113 μmol kg −1 caused by wintertime organic matter remineralization from terrestrial source. While this biological addition of DIC shifted to DIC removal due to biological production in summer supported by the increased nutrient loading from Changjiang River. The p CO 2 dynamics in the river plume and the ECS offshore were both subjected to physical mixing of freshwater and seawater, whether in winter and summer. In the inner estuary without horizontal mixing, the p CO 2 dynamics were mainly influenced by biological uptake in winter and temperature in summer. The inner estuary, the river plume, and the ECS offshore were sources of atmospheric CO 2 , with their contributions varying seasonally. The Changjiang runoff enhanced the inner estuary's role as a CO 2 source in summer, while intensive biological uptake reduced the river plume's contribution.

Abstract:Accurate research on carbon emission spatial distribution is vital for achieving carbon neutrality. Previous studies suffered from scale effects, demanding enhanced resolution. This study collected and computed land use carbon emission data for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). It also introduced a novel method to downscale this data into 30 m raster format using night light and NDVI data. The study showed a consistent annual rise in GBA land use carbon emissions, accompanied by increasing disparities. At the city level, emissions in the highest-ranking cities were 58 times higher than those in the lowest-ranking ones. Impervious land carbon emissions held over 90% sway over total carbon emissions, making them the primary driver of land use-related carbon emissions. Remarkably, high-emission zones, such as coastal cities Guangzhou, Foshan, Dongguan, and Hong Kong, expanded outward, forming multi-tiered, high-density carbon areas, giving rise to an "∩" shape pattern. Carbon emission change rates from cropland were modest, characterized by a pattern of fluctuation. Moreover, spatial autocorrelation and K-means cluster analyses uncovered a noticeable spatial correlation among urban land use carbon emissions in the GBA. Consequently, a compelling case exists for enhancing inter-city cooperation to collectively pursue regional emission reduction objectives.

Abstract:Global climate change and coastal urbanization have significantly impacted the health and carbon storage of coastal zone ecosystems. Investigating the spatial and temporal variations in coastal carbon storage is crucial for developing effective strategies for land management and ecological protection. Current methods for evaluating carbon storage are hindered by insufficient accuracy and data acquisition challenges, necessitating solutions to enhance both reliability and precision. This study aims to assess the variations in carbon storage and annual carbon sequestration in the Jiaozhou Bay coastal zone from 1990 to 2020 and to identify the driving factors by integrating the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs (InVEST) and Carnegie Ames Stanford Approach (CASA) models with remote sensing data and geographic detector methods. The findings suggest that Jiaozhou Bay has experienced a substantial decrease in carbon storage, declining by 17.4% from 1990 to 2020, and annual carbon sequestration, decreasing by 35.5% from 1990 to 2016, but has stabilized recently. Vegetation cover and water bodies play critical roles in regional carbon storage. Furthermore, the dynamics of carbon storage and land use patterns are significantly influenced by socioeconomic factors, including GDP and population density. A comparison of the InVEST and CASA models demonstrates consistency in their carbon storage and annual carbon sequestration assessments. Combining these models in future assessments can enhance the scientific rigor and accuracy of the research, providing more reliable evidence for ecosystem management and policy making.

Abstract:Dissolved inorganic nutrients are pivotal in maintaining the material and energy balance of marine ecosystems, impacting the survival and dynamic succession of marine organisms. To gain a deeper understanding of the source and sink characteristics of dissolved inorganic nutrients in bays affected by human activities and to elucidate the processes involving filter-feeding shellfish in relation to these nutrients, this study investigated the source and sink dynamics of dissolved inorganic nutrients in the Dapeng Cove sea area of Shenzhen. Over the past decade, a significant change in the N/P ratio within the survey area has been observed, suggesting a shift in nutrient limitation from nitrogen to phosphorus or phosphorus–silicon limitation. This induced change in the N/P ratio, along with Si/N and Si/P ratios, may facilitate the growth of cyanobacteria and, subsequently, alter the proportions of diatoms, dinoflagellates, and cyanobacteria. Seasonal fluctuations in human disturbance intensity and precipitation determine the seasonal and spatial distribution of nutrients in the bay, thereby influencing the bay ecosystem metabolism. The Land–Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone (LOICZ) model analysis revealed that the bay represents a major source of inorganic nitrogen and a source of phosphate in spring, summer, and autumn, while acting as a sink for phosphate in winter. Furthermore, rivers and groundwater represent the primary sources of phosphate and inorganic nitrogen in the bay. The bay exhibits an annual net ecosystem metabolic rate of 7.06 mmol C/m2/d, with denitrification dominating the nitrogen cycle at 12.65 mmol C/m2/d. Overall, the Dapeng Cove ecosystem displays net production exceeding respiration, classifying it as an autotrophic system. Additionally, the nitrogen cycle in the sea area is predominantly driven by denitrification. The analysis also revealed that the impact of oyster proliferation on the physical and chemical factors in the surveyed area is relatively weaker than that of surface runoff and groundwater inputs.

Distribution and control mechanism of pCO2 and water-air CO2 efflux in the Pearl River Estuary

Abstract:Estuaries are generally considered to be important sources of atmospheric CO2. However, the differences between estuaries, and inadequate observations of partial pressure of CO2 in estuarine water (pCO2water) hamper global estuarine CO2 budgeting. In this study, the longitudinal distribution of CO2 in the waters of Modaomen (MSE) and Lingdingyang (LSE), two sub-estuaries of the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), and its influencing mechanism are studied. The change in the distribution of pCO2water along the distance from the upstream estuary to the ocean between LSE and MSE was significantly different. pCO2water at the LSE ranges from 238 to 7267 µatm, whereas the MSE ranges from 406 to 3078 µatm. Stronger microbial respiration and relatively long water retention times were the main influences that led to higher pCO2water at LSE than at MSE. Seasonally, the increase of soil CO2 into the water in the upstream basin caused by precipitation is the potential influencing factor that the water pCO2water in the flood season is higher than in the dry season. PRE was a net source of atmospheric CO2 with an average annual water-air flux of 41.2 ± 33.3 mmol m-2 day-1. Our results suggest that the differences in longitudinal gradients of pCO2water between estuaries in the same region and the effects of different gas transport velocity models on CO2 emission estimates need to be considered in estuarine CO2 emission budgeting.

Abstract:The dynamics of lateral nutrient fluxes through hydrological movements are crucial for understanding ecological functions related to the flow of energy, materials, and organisms across various spatiotemporal scales. To investigate the connectivity of multiple spatial flow processes, we conducted a one-year field study to measure lateral hydrologic carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) fluxes across the continental shelf in the Yangtze estuary. We observed a significant correlation between the differences in remote sensing-based estimates of gross primary production (GPP) (∆GPPMODIS) and the differences in eddy covariance (EC) tower-based GPP (∆GPPEC) at both high-elevation and low-elevation sites. Our findings indicated that the saltmarsh acts as a net source of dissolved total C (DTC) while serving as a net sink for dissolved total N (DTN). Furthermore, there was a significant correlation in the total dissolved stoichiometry of the C/N ratio between imports from and exports to adjacent aquatic systems. These findings highlight the importance of integrating ecological stoichiometric principles to improve our understanding of the complex relationships among physical, chemical, and biological processes, particularly within the context of the meta-ecosystem framework. Additionally, when considering reciprocal hydrological lateral C and N flows, a single ecosystem can function as both a source and sink within the meta-ecosystem framework.

Abstract:As the widely distributed transition zones connecting the terrestrial and marine ecosystems, coastal bays have long water retention times to reconstruct the DOM pool affecting global carbon cycling. However, we still have a limited understanding of mechanisms shaping the carbon cycling of coastal bays at regional scales. To address this issue, we combined stable carbon isotopes, ultraviolet-visible absorption, fluorescence spectroscopy, and ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry to investigate the spatiotemporal chemistry of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in Xiangshan Bay, a semi-enclosed, eutrophic bay in southeastern China. The DOM in Xiangshan Bay was characterized by a higher degree of humification and aromaticity during winter, whereas the inverse signature during summer. Results showed that the significant seasonal variation of DOM chemistry was mainly modulated by intense primary productivity stimulated by nutrients during summer, and other factors including sediment pore water DOM release and photochemical reactions. Additionally, based on the microbial carbon pump (MCP) hypothesis, marine microorganisms may synthesize biologically recalcitrant DOM with millennia turnover time. The efficient MCP associated with reduced nutrients probably acted as a critical factor in Xiangshan Bay leading to the formation of additional refractory molecular formulae (carboxyl-rich alicyclic molecules) and a more recalcitrant signature of DOM during winter. Incorporated with seven other coastal bays across China, it is revealed that anthropogenic inputs substantially contributed to Chinese coastal bays. Further studies need to better constrain the biogeochemical implications of these anthropogenic inputs. More importantly, decreasing the anthropogenic input of nutrients to coastal bays may enhance their functions in long-term carbon sequestration.

Abstract:Heavy metal concentrations and physicochemical parameters in coastal waters were measured to analyze the spatial distribution characteristics, pollution degrees, and sources of heavy metals in the heavily urbanized Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) in China. Heavy metal concentrations in the eastern GBA were higher than those in the west, and the levels of Pb and Zn in seawater were higher than those in groundwater and river water. Both the pollution factors and comprehensive water quality index demonstrated that seawater was not contaminated with As, Cd, Cr, and Ni, whereas low to considerable levels of contamination of Pb and Zn were observed in the central and eastern sections of the GBA. Multiple statistical analyses suggested that the Pb and Zn contaminations in seawater were probably derived from atmospheric deposition and human activities, and the excess amounts of As, Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn in groundwater were attributed to anthropogenic activities. The heavy metal fluxes from submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) were comparable to, or even greater than, those from local rivers. Therefore, SGD is a significant invisible contributor of heavy metals into the coastal ocean that has often been overlooked in comparison to other visible pollution sources. This study suggests that SGD should be considered in the assessment of heavy metal pollution and future water quality management protocols in marine ecosystems.

Abstract:Introduction: In response to China's ambitious dual-carbon goals, this study investigates the spatial correlation and influencing factors of carbon emission intensity within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Great Bay Area (GBA), a region pivotal for the nation's energy conservation and emission reduction efforts. Through a comprehensive analysis encompassing the period from 2000 to 2020, this research aims to delineate the spatial dynamics of carbon emissions and identify actionable insights for regional low-carbon development. Methods: Utilizing an integrated methodology comprising spatial autocorrelation analysis, Social Network Analysis (SNA), and the Quadratic Assignment Procedure (QAP), the study analyzes carbon emission data alongside socio-economic variables. These methodologies allow for a nuanced exploration of the spatial correlation structure and the determination of factors influencing carbon emission intensity across the GBA. Results: Findings reveal a cyclical fluctuation in the spatial network of carbon emissions from 2000 to 2020, characterized by varying degrees of cohesion among cities, indicating significant opportunities for spatial optimization. A "core-periphery" pattern emerges, with economically robust cities such as Hong Kong and Macao at the core, and less developed cities like Huizhou and Jiangmen on the periphery. Cities like Guangzhou and Shenzhen play crucial mediator roles. The QAP analysis further identifies six major influencing factors: geographic spatial proximity, economic development level, urbanization rate, industrial configuration, level of technological innovation, and environmental protection efforts, with the latter four having a markedly positive impact on spatial relevance. Discussion: The study's insights underscore the importance of understanding the spatial dynamics of carbon emissions and the role of socioeconomic factors in shaping these patterns. For policymakers and stakeholders in the GBA, these findings highlight the necessity of targeted intervention strategies that consider both the unique position of cities within the spatial network and the broader socio-economic context. This approach can significantly contribute to achieving China's dual-carbon objectives, promoting energy conservation, and facilitating the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Abstract:One year of continuous data from two eddy-flux towers established along an elevation gradient in coastal Shanghai was analyzed to evaluate the tidal effect on carbon flux (Fc) over an estuarine wetland. The measured wavelet spectra and cospectra of Fc and other environmental factors demonstrated that the dynamics of Fc at both sites exhibited a tidal-driven pattern with obvious characteristics at scales between 10 and 20 days (256–512-h). Environmental factors exerted major controls on the carbon balance at finer temporal scales. Fc was more sensitive to tides at the low-elevation site than at the high-elevation site. Overall, the mean nighttime Fc during spring tides was lower than that during neap tides, indicating suppressed ecosystem respiration under inundation. Larger differences were observed at the low-elevation site due to longer inundation durations. In contrast, daytime Fc was more variable since plants reacted differently in different growth periods and under different tidal elevations. The amplitudes of diurnal Fc during tidal periods were larger than those reported for other wetland types, implying a great potential for future carbon sequestration. Whilst tides would also transport organic matter to nearby estuaries and hence may incur carbon emission in the receiving ecosystems. Thus, further study on lateral carbon transport is required to investigate the tidal effect on the carbon sink/source role of the wetland.
Coastal eutrophication driven by long-distance transport of large river nutrient loads, the case of Xiangshan Bay, China

Abstract:With accelerating anthropogenic activities, the overloading of land-derived nutrients and the resultant eutrophication are threatening coastal aquatic habitats worldwide. In semi-enclosed coastal bays, eutrophication is always considered a local problem that can be mitigated by nutrient reduction at a regional scale. However, as the main nutrient drains major global river discharges can have far-reaching effects over hundreds of kilometers alongshore, which are usually not precisely recognized in local coastal zone management. Here, we first quantified the contributions from both local and remote nutrient sources in Xiangshan Bay (XSB), a eutrophic semi-enclosed bay in China 200 km south of the mouth of the Changjiang River (CJR, the world's third largest river), employing a salinity-based conservative mixing model. We found that the nutrients in Xiangshan Bay were mainly supplied by intruded coastal water fed by CJR discharge, contributing 63 % of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), 65 % of dissolved silicon (DSi), and 49 % of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) during the summer of 2017, and 75 % of DIN, 75 % of DSi and 60 % of DIP during the winter of 2019. Additionally, long-term interannual trends in the nutrient concentrations of XSB were generally synchronous with those of the downstream portion of the CJR, indicating that CJR discharge seems to be a strong driver of the eutrophication observed in XSB. In contrast, the impact of local nutrient inputs, such as riverine sewage drainage, aquaculture, biogenic activities, and elemental recycling, was much lower and was regionally limited to the inner bay. Interestingly, the DIP contributions of the local and remote sources were similar, indicating the greater relevance of the internal process. Overall, to mitigate eutrophication in large river-adjacent coastal bays, the inter-regional united practices for nutrient source regulation and ecosystem restoration should be permanently applied along the entire river basin-estuary-coastal continuum.

Abstract:The biogeochemical transformation of dissolved carbon in tidal beaches affects the coastal carbon cycle and budget. Yet, the influence of groundwater flow on the behavior of dissolved carbon and CO 2 flux across the different interfaces in these dynamic beach systems remains poorly understood, especially in deep beach aquifers. In this study, we investigated the biogeochemical reactions and origins of dissolved carbon and quantitatively evaluated CO 2 outgassing driven by submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) in a high permeability beach aquifer (9−13 m depth) located in the South China Sea shelf. Results revealed that both dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) exhibited non-conservative additions across the salinity gradient. The excess DIC and TA most likely resulted from organic carbon decomposition in the brackish and saline zones. Aerobic respiration (upper saline plume zone), anaerobic reactions, and tidal mixing were identified as the dominant processes controlling DIC and TA dynamics. The mean CO 2 outgassing flux across the beach sediment-air interface was estimated to be 1.05 g m -2 d -1 , significantly higher than the CO 2 flux across the sea-air interface. The outgassing pattern of groundwater CO 2 from beach aquifer appeared to be driven by tidal pumping. Considering the combined effects of SGD-derived dissolved carbon and nutrients, we suggest that SGD yielded a net CO 2 flux, contributing to 45% of the CO 2 flux across the sea-air interface. SGD directly and indirectly delivered substantial CO 2 from the beach aquifer to the atmosphere, approximately (4.89−9.21)×10 3 tons of CO 2 per year along the 76.2 km long sandy coast. These findings demonstrate that intertidal beach aquifers, as active biogeochemical reactors have the strong potential to intensify CO 2 emissions to the atmosphere through both beach sediment-air and sea-air interfaces. This study provides a better understanding of the links between carbon biogeochemical cycles and hydrologic processes in the coastal zones.

Abstract:Climate change is a key issue receiving increasing global attention. Coastal areas play an important role in mitigating climate change because of enormous potentials for carbon sequestration. Simulating and evaluating the carbon storage, increment, and value of coastal areas is of considerable importance in achieving carbon neutrality. In this study, the South Coast of Hangzhou Bay in China was selected as the study area. A three-class carbon pool system was established based on vegetation and soil and considering the coastline as the boundary for comprehensively revealing the carbon sink in coastal areas and accurately distinguishing the roles of different carbon pools. Then, the maps of carbon storage and increment were generated by integrating the field and remote sensing data through "from point to area" spatial simulations. An accounting list was developed for systematically summarizing, precisely quantifying, and visually displaying the carbon storage, increment, and value following the three-class carbon pools. Results indicated that the carbon sink showed a gradient change from sea to land. Salt marshes had low storage but high increment, whereas areas above the coastline had the opposite characteristics. The total carbon storage of vegetation and soil were 1417.94 Gg and 3359.07 Gg, respectively, and their carbon increments during 2011–2022 were 309.17 Gg/yr and 29.46 Gg/yr, respectively. The carbon storage per area of vegetation and soil were 27.66 Mg/ha and 53.09 Mg/ha, respectively, and their carbon increments during 2011–2022 were 6.03 Mg/(ha yr) and 0.47 Mg/(ha yr), respectively. As the main body of blue carbon, salt marshes have achieved distinctly higher increment than the adjacent areas above the coastline. The carbon increment per area of soil was lower than 1/5 of vegetation in salt marshes. Mudflats had low carbon increment but large storage because of the extensive area. Alien species had higher increment in terms of vegetation but similar one from the perspective of soil compared with native species, denoting the low decrease of soil carbon sink when eliminating alien species. Considering the hazard of alien species to the health of coastal wetlands, this indicates the feasibility and necessity to develop the high-quality carbon sink in the study area. The carbon sink value based on the carbon stored in the soil summed to 1.68 million yuan, and were increased by 33%, 7%, 48%, and 45% in scenarios of baseline scenario, economic development, ecological protection, and comprehensive optimization, respectively. The present study validated the high carbon increment and immense increase potential and provided an applicable system to normalize carbon mapping and accounting in coastal areas.

Abstract:The interplay of global climate change and anthropogenic activities has significantly affected the carbon cycle in coastal ocean environments. Consequently, further investigation into the carbonate system, carbon source and sink processes, and acidification mechanisms is essential. This study examined the surface carbonate system offshore of Qingdao, utilizing data from nine spring cruises in 2011–2019. The inter-annual variations in sea surface temperature revealed a gradual upward trend, whereas chlorophyll a (Chl- a ) and apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) exhibited alternating trends of increase and decrease. Over the period from 2011 to 2019, pH levels ranged from 8.00 to 8.19, partial pressure of CO 2 ( p CO 2 ) values varied between 187.8 and 364.1 μatm, and calcium carbonate saturation (Ω arag ) ranged from 3.22 to 4.79. From 2011 to 2017, both pH and Ω arag showed a decreasing trend, attributed to the increasing influence of respiration. In contrast, an upward trend was observed for both parameters during 2018 and 2019, indicating a decline in respiration's contribution. Biological processes, especially the increase in respiration caused by the nutrients and organic matter released through human activities, were pivotal in determining spatial variations in p CO 2 and Ω arag offshore, while the impact of mixing processes and temperature was comparatively negligible. Furthermore, the Ulva prolifera bloom event in July 2015 significantly affected the coastal waters of Qingdao's carbonate system when compared to the no-bloom period in March 2015. Overall, the study area functioned as a sink for atmospheric CO 2 in the spring. The fluctuations in air-sea CO 2 fluxes corresponded with changes in Δ p CO 2 and wind speeds, with surface seawater air-sea CO 2 fluxes ranging from −17.7 to 12.2 mmol m −2 d −1 between 2011 and 2019, yielding an average flux of −9.4 ± 5.3 mmol m −2 d −1 .

Abstract:Seagrass ecosystems have received a great deal of attention for contributing to uptake of atmospheric CO2, and thereby helping to mitigate global climate change ('blue carbon'). Carbon budgets for seagrass ecosystems are developed by estimating air-sea CO2 fluxes. Data for air-sea CO2 flux for tropical seagrass ecosystems are lacking, which is problematic for constraining global seagrass carbon budgets. Here, we sought to address this important data gap for tropical seagrass ecosystems (dominated by Thalassia hemprichii and Enhalus acoroides) from the Hainan Island of South China Sea, while also testing what the main factors driving the variations of air-sea CO2 fluxes are. We found that air-sea CO2 fluxes exhibited a U-shape diurnal variability from 6 a.m. to 6 a.m. of the next day, with the highest and lowest air-sea CO2 fluxes values at early morning and afternoon, respectively. Biological processes were the driving force for mediating diurnal variations of seawater pCO2. The pCO2, sea in different seasons displayed a trend of increasing from spring, reaching maximum in summer and then a decreasing trend after summer, where water temperature, wind speed and seagrass growth mainly drove the variations. This resulted in net uptake of CO2 in all seasons except during summer in our study seagrass ecosystems, with greater negative values found in autumn (-3.63 ± 0.76 mmol m-2 d-1) than those in winter (-2.84 ± 0.60 mmol m-2 d-1). While the nutrient loading induced seagrass biomass changes (especially the seagrass T. hemprichii), which mediated the air-sea CO2 fluxes changes among different seagrass meadows. Net annual CO2 uptake potential under low nutrient loading (-0.77 ± 0.16 mol m-2 yr-1) was 23-54 % greater than high nutrient loading seagrass meadows, with the average annual air-sea CO2 flux of the three seagrass meadows as -0.64 ± 0.13 mol m-2 yr-1. These results suggest that tropical seagrass meadows of Hainan Island are a significant CO2 sink of atmospheric CO2, but this capacity can be diminished by nutrient loading. Scaling up, we estimate the annual atmospheric CO2 uptake by seagrass meadows of Hainan Island (total area 55.28 km2) was 1544 t of CO2 yr-1, equivalent to the annual emissions from the wholesale, retail, accommodation and catering industries of 164,000 tourists in Hainan Island. With carbon neutrality becoming an important part of global climate governance, this study provides timely information for capitalising on the ability of seagrasses to contribute to natural climate solutions.
