Abstract:Based on the China high resolution emission gridded data (1 km spatial resolution), this article is aimed to create a Chinese city carbon dioxide (CO2) emission data set using consolidated data sources as well as normalized and standardized data processing methods. Standard methods were used to calculate city CO2 emissions, including scope 1 and scope 2. Cities with higher CO2 emissions are mostly in north, northeast, and eastern coastal areas. Cities with lower CO2 emissions are in the western region. Cites with higher CO2 emissions are clustered in the Jing-Jin-Ji Region (such as Beijing, Tianjin, and Tangshan), and the Yangtze River Delta region (such as Shanghai and Suzhou). The city per capita CO2 emission is larger in the north than the south. There are obvious aggregations of cities with high per capita CO2 emission in the north. Four cities among the top 10 per capita emissions (Erdos, Wuhai, Shizuishan, and Yinchuan) cluster in the main coal production areas of northern China. This indicates the significant impact of coal resources endowment on city industry and CO2 emissions. The majority (77%) of cities have annual CO2 emissions below 50 million tons. The mean annual emission, among all cities, is 37 million tons. Emissions from service-based cities, which include the smallest number of cities, are the highest. Industrial cities are the largest category and the emission distribution from these cities is close to the normal distribution. Emissions and degree of dispersion, in the other cities (excluding industrial cities and service-based cities), are in the lowest level. Per capita CO2 emissions in these cities are generally below 20 t/person (89%) with a mean value of 11 t/person. The distribution interval of per capita CO2 emission within industrial cities is the largest among the three city categories. This indicates greater differences among per capita CO2 emissions of industrial cities. The distribution interval of per capita CO2 emission of other cities is the lowest, indicating smaller differences of per capita CO2 emissions among this city category. Three policy suggestions are proposed: first, city CO2 emission inventory data in China should be increased, especially for prefecture level cities. Second, city responsibility for emission reduction, and partitioning the national goal should be established, using a bottom-up approach based on specific CO2 emission levels and potential for emission reductions in each city. Third, comparative and benchmarking research on city CO2 emissions should be conducted, and a Top Runner system of city CO2 emission reduction should be established.
Spatio-temporal patterns and drivers of CH4 and CO2 fluxes from rivers and lakes in highly urbanized areas

Abstract:Gaseous carbon exchange at the water-air interface of rivers and lakes is an essential process for regional and global carbon cycle assessments. Many studies have shown that rivers surrounding urban landscapes can be hotspots for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Here we investigated the variability of diffusive GHG (methane [CH4] and carbon dioxide [CO2]) emissions from rivers in different landscapes (i.e., urban, agricultural and mixed) and from lakes in Suzhou, a highly urbanized region in eastern China. GHG emissions in the Suzhou metropolitan water network followed a typical seasonal pattern, with the highest fluxes in summer, and were primarily influenced by temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration. Surprisingly, lakes were emission hotspots, with mean CH4 and CO2 fluxes of 2.80 and 128.89 mg m-2 h-1, respectively, translating to a total CO2-equivalent flux of 0.21 g CO2-eq m-2 d-1. The global warming potential of urban and mixed rivers (0.19 g CO2-eq m-2 d-1) was comparable to that for lakes, but about twice the value for agricultural rivers (0.10 g CO2-eq m-2 d-1). Factors related to the high GHG emissions in lakes included hypoxic water conditions and an adequate nutrient supply. Riverine CH4 emissions were primarily associated with the concentrations of total dissolved solids (TDS), ammonia‑nitrogen and chlorophyll a. CO2 emissions in rivers were mainly closely related to TDS, with suitable conditions allowing rapid organic matter decomposition. Compared with other types of rivers, urban rivers had more available organic matter and therefore higher CO2 emissions. Overall, this study emphasizes the need for a deeper understanding of the impact of GHG emissions from different water types on global warming in rapidly urbanizing regions. Flexible management measures are urgently needed to mitigate CO2 and CH4 emissions more effectively in the context of the shrinking gap between urban and rural areas with growing socio-economic development.
Elevated nitrogen loadings facilitate carbon dioxide emissions from urban inland waters

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) production and emissions from inland waters play considerable roles in global atmospheric CO2 sources, while there are still uncertainties regarding notable nutrient inputs and anthropogenic activities. Urban inland waters, with frequently anthropogenic modifications and severely nitrogen loadings, were hotspots for CO2 emissions. Here, we investigated the spatiotemporal patterns of partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) and CO2 fluxes (FCO2) in typical urban inland waters in Tianjin, China. Our observation indicated that pCO2 values were oversaturated in highly polluted waters, particularly in sewage rivers and urban rivers, exhibiting approximately 9 times higher than the atmosphere equilibrium concentration during sampling campaigns. Obviously, the spatiotemporal distributions of pCO2 and FCO2 emphasized that the water environmental conditions and anthropogenic activities jointly adjusted primary productivity and biological respiration of inland waters. Meanwhile, statistically positive correlations between pCO2/FCO2 and NH4+-N/NO3--N (p < 0.05) suggested that nitrogen biogeochemical processes, especially the nitrification, played a dominant role in CO2 emissions attributing to the water acidification that stimulated CO2 production and emissions. Except for slight CO2 sinks in waters with low organic contents, the total CO2 emissions from the urban surface waters of Tianjin were remarkable (286.8 Gg yr-1). The results emphasized that the reductions of nitrogen loadings, sewage draining waters, and agricultural pollution could alleviate CO2 emissions from urban inland waters.
Unraveling the Factors Influencing CO2 Emissions from Hydroelectric Reservoirs in Karst and Non-Karst Regions: A Comparative Analysis.

Abstract:Carbon migration, transformation, and emissions as CO2 in reservoir and lake systems have been extensively studied. However, uncertainties persist regarding carbon cycling variations in both karst and non-karst regions within large thermal stratified river-reservoir systems. To address this knowledge gap, we combined measurements of water chemistry, isotopic compositions (delta C-13), partial pressure of CO2 (pCO(2)), and CO2 fluxes (F-CO2) to elucidate the differences, control mechanisms, and environmental effects of various carbon biogeochemical processes in the Hongjiadu reservoir (HJD, karst reservoir) and Shangyoujiang reservoir (SYJ, non-karst reservoir), Yangtze River basin, China. Our results demonstrate that key biogeochemical processes are associated with CO2 production and emissions. The stronger biological carbon pump (BCP) effect in the lentic area of the HJD reservoir limited CO2 emission (0.9 +/- 5.0 mmol m(-2) d(-1)) compared to the SYJ reservoir (50.9 +/- 33.4 mmol m(-2) d(-1)), leading to low dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and high saturation state of carbonate minerals in the lentic epilimnion. Although the released water from both reservoirs acted as hotspots for CO2 emissions, the results of higher Revelle factor (RF) in the HJD reservoir than SYJ reservoir suggest the greater buffer capacity and lower sensitivity of OC degradation changes in DIC. Despite the shorter hydraulic retention time (HRT) of SYJ reservoir (120 d) compared to HJD reservoir (368 d), F-CO2 was 3.5 times higher than that of the HJD reservoir (652.9 mmol m(-2) d(-1)). Moreover, upon analyzing selected reservoirs worldwide, it becomes apparent that karst reservoirs demonstrate a reduced potential for CO2 emissions. Our results indicate that the impact of varying geologic settings should be considered to minimize errors in regional and global CO2 emission estimates.

Abstract:Vitellogenin genes are expressed specifically in the liver of female oviparous vertebrates under the strict control of estrogen. To explain this tissue-specific expression, we performed a detailed analysis of the Xenopus laevis vitellogenin gene B1 promoter by DNase I footprinting and gel mobility-shift assays. We characterized five binding sites for the ubiquitous factor CTF/NF-I. Two of these sites are close to the TATA-box, whereas the others are located on both sides of the estrogen responsive unit formed by two imperfect estrogen response elements. Moreover two liver-enriched factors, C/EBP and HNF3, were found to interact with multiple closely spaced proximal promoter elements in the first 100 base pairs upstream of the TATA-box. To confirm the physiological significance of this in vitro analysis, in vivo DNase I footprinting experiments were carried out using the ligation-mediated polymerase chain reaction technique. The various cis-elements characterized in vitro as binding sites for known transcription factors and more particularly for liver-enriched transcription factors are efficiently recognized in vivo as well, suggesting that they play an important role in the control of the liver-specific vitellogenin gene B1 expression.
An urban polluted river as a significant hotspot for water–atmosphere exchange of CH4 and N2O

Abstract:Polluted urban river systems might be a strong source of atmospheric methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), but so far only a few urban river systems have been quantified with regard to their source strength for greenhouse gases (GHGs). In this study, we measured loads of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and organic carbon, dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations, and fluxes of CH4 and N2O from an urban river in Beijing, China during the course of an entire year. Fluxes calculated using the floating chamber approach or via the diffusion method with measurements of river water GHG concentrations showed comparable temporal variations. However, the flux magnitude based on the diffusion method was found to strongly depend on the underlying parameterization of the gas transfer velocity. In view of the large differences while applying different methodologies to estimate surface water GHG fluxes further studies are still needed to prove and eventually quantify the systematic errors which are likely caused by either the chamber technique or the approaches of individual diffusion models. For both the floating chamber and the diffusion-based flux estimates, strong seasonal variations in CH4 and N2O fluxes from the river surface were observed, with fluxes ranging from 3 to 8374 μg C m-2 h-1 for CH4 and 1-3986 μg N m-2 h-1 for N2O. The CH4 fluxes were strongly negatively correlated with the DO concentration (P < 0.01). The highest N2O fluxes were observed at times with low CH4 fluxes (i.e., in spring and autumn). Annual CH4 and N2O fluxes totaled 19.3-79.4 and 17.4-44.8 kg C (N) ha-1 yr-1, respectively. These high fluxes are in agreement with estimates from the few other studies carried out for urban river systems to date and indicate that urban polluted river systems are a significant regional source of atmospheric GHGs.

Abstract:In the modern era, urban freshwater bodies play a significant role in global carbon (C) budgeting, therefore, impacting climate change under rising global mean temperature. However, the trend, magnitude, and drivers of Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in these urban freshwater bodies of China remain uncertain. Present study investigated temporal changes in GHG emissions in urban water bodies, including artificial lakes, reservoirs, aquaculture ponds, and rivers, within a year in Nanjing city in the areas of the Yangtze River delta of China. In addition, meteorological and hydrochemical parameters were measured to elucidate the key drivers of GHG emissions. The results showed that the average annual flux of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) in aquaculture ponds was estimated to be 1355.6 mg CO2 m‐2 day‐1 and 116.6 mg CH4 m‐2 day‐1, followed by that of artificial lakes were 1172.2 mg CO2 m‐2 day‐1 and 44.1 mg CH4 m‐2 day‐1, rivers reached 775.9 mg CO2 m‐2 day‐1 and 23.9 mg CH4 m‐2 day‐1 and reservoirs were 170.1 mg CO2 m‐2 day‐1 and 7.2 mg CH4 m‐2 day‐1, respectively. The results further suggest that although artificial lakes and aquaculture ponds occupied only 23% of the cumulative area under lakes and ponds in the Yangtze River delta, contribute approximately 43%, about 27.5 Gg C, of total fluxes. Furthermore, high concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and low dissolved oxygen (DO) coincided with the high GHG emissions. The study suggests that DO, DOC, temperature, and wind speed are the key factors impacting the potential of GHG emissions in urban freshwater ecosystems. Strategic mitigation measures in the vicinity of the urban freshwater bodies could efficiently reduce carbon emissions in the future.

Urbanization and weather dynamics co-dominated the spatial-temporal variation in pCO2 and CO2 fluxes in small montanic rivers draining diverse landscapes

Abstract:Rivers have been widely reported as important CO2 emitters to the atmosphere. Rapid urbanization has a profound impact on the carbon biogeochemical cycle of rivers, leading to enhanced riverine CO2 evasions. However, it is still unclear whether the spatial-temporal patterns of CO2 emissions in the rivers draining diverse landscapes dominated by urbanization were stable, especially in mountainous areas. This study carried out a two-year investigation of water environmental hydrochemistry in three small mountainous rivers draining urban, suburban and rural landscapes in southwestern China, and CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) and fluxes (fCO2) in surface water were measured using headspace equilibrium method and classical thin boundary layer model. The average pCO2 and fCO2 in the highly urbanized river were of 4783.6 μatm and 700.0 mmol m-2 d-1, conspicuously higher than those in the rural river (1525.9 μatm and 123.2 mmol m-2 d-1), and the suburban river presented a moderate level (3114.2 μatm and 261.2 mmol m-2 d-1). It provided even clearer evidence that watershed urbanization could remarkably enhance riverine CO2 emissions. More importantly, the three rivers presented different longitudinal variations in pCO2, implying diversified spatial patterns of riverine CO2 emissions as a result of urbanization. The urban land can explain 49.6-69.1% of the total spatial variation in pCO2 at the reach scale, indicating that urban land distribution indirectly dominated the longitudinal pattern of riverine pCO2 and fCO2. pCO2 and fCO2 in the three rivers showed similar temporal variability with higher warm-rainy seasons and lower dry seasons, which are significantly controlled by weather dynamics, including monthly temperature and precipitation, but seem to be impervious to watershed urbanization. High temperature-stimulated microorganisms metabolism and riched-CO2 runoff input lead much higher pCO2 in warm-rainy seasons. However, it showed more sensitivity of pCO2 to monthly weather dynamics in urbanized rivers than that in rural rivers, and warm-rainy seasons showed hot moments of CO2 evasion for urban rivers. TOC, DOC, TN, pH and DO were the main controls on pCO2 in the urban and suburban rivers, while only pH and DO were connected with pCO2 in the rural rivers. This indicated differential controls and regulatory processes of pCO2 in the rivers draining diverse landscapes. Furthermore, it suggested that pCO2 calculated by the pH-total alkalinity method would obviously overestimate pCO2 in urban polluted rivers due to the inevitable influence of non-carbonate alkalinity, and thus, a relatively conservative headspace method should be recommended. We highlighted that urbanization and weather dynamics co-dominated the multiformity and uncertainty in spatial-temporal patterns of riverine CO2 evasions, which should be considered when modeling CO2 dynamics in urbanized rivers.
Eutrophication and Dissolved Organic Matter Exacerbate the Diel Discrepancy of CO2 Emissions in China’s Largest Urban Lake

Abstract:The large variability in the emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) from urban lakes remains a challenge for partitioning these sources at meaningful spatial and temporal scales. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) governs the spatial and temporal variations in CO2, yet relationships of the CO2 concentration (cCO(2)) and emission flux (FCO2) with DOM in urban lakes have rarely been reported. In this study, we monitored levels of cCO(2), FCO2, and the composition of DOM over a 24 h period at three sites during the dry and wet seasons in China's largest urban lake, Tangxun Lake. Our study found the ratio of day/night FCO2 (millimoles per square meter per day) decreased from the dry season (0.79; 7.68/9.68) to the wet season (0.25; 6.05/24.16), averaging 0.42 (6.77/15.97), implying that accounting for nighttime CO2 emissions can increase regional estimates by 70%. This study revealed that eutrophication affected diurnal CO2 emissions with greater algal growth enhancing daytime CO2 uptake and subsequently increasing nighttime CO2 emissions via DOM degradation (larger protein-like DOM fraction). We anticipate that the relative magnitude of FCO2 between day and night from lakes is likely to increase due to urbanization and climate change, underscoring the importance of treating urban lakes as a distinct group and integrating DOM dynamics into carbon cycling in future research.
pCO2 and CO2 evasion from two small suburban rivers: Implications of the watershed urbanization process

Abstract:Rivers are widely reported as CO2-emitting hotpots and are attracting increasing attention worldwide. However, less attention has been given to the CO2 emission from the suburban rivers which are experiencing rapid watershed urbanization and increasing anthropogenic stress. Here, two small suburban rivers in Southwest China were studied, and seasonal sampling campaigns with high spatial resolution were carried out to explore the characterization of partial pressure (pCO2) and CO2 efflux and their possible controls. The results showed that, the pCO2 and estimated CO2 fluxes from the two suburban rivers ranged from 37 to 6466 μatm (mean of 1293 ± 1126 μatm) and -72-1569 mmol·m-2·d-1 (mean of 185 ± 240 mmol·m-2·d-1), respectively. And, both of them exhibited disproportionately high variability and acted as strong CO2 emitters to the atmosphere. The pCO2 in the two suburban rivers showed significant spatial variability, with urban sections having 2-2.5 times higher values than exurban sections, and, the urban land use proportion in the basins accounted for 35%-67% of such spatial variation in pCO2. The sewage-dominated urban tributaries had much higher pCO2 and acted as an obvious exciter to the high pCO2 in urban sections of suburban rivers. Carbon and nutrients concentrations also accounted for the spatial variation in pCO2 and fCO2 in the two suburban rivers, and acted as good indicators. The seasonal variation in pCO2, with the highest values in autumn and lowest values in spring, was controlled by the precipitation dilution effect and seasonal temperature as well as the boosted primary production at several urban sites. We highlighted that small suburban rivers showed disproportionally high spatial variability in pCO2 and CO2 fluxes in their limited basin areas due to the development of urbanization, and could be used as a good model for studying the complex impacts of anthropogenic disturbances on river carbon biogeochemical processes.

The shifting pattern of CO2 source sink in a subtropical urbanizing lightly eutrophic lake

Abstract:Globally, numerous freshwater lakes exist, and rapid urbanization has impacted carbon biogeochemical cycling at the interface where water meets air in these bodies. However, there is still a limited understanding of CO2 absorption/emission in eutrophic urbanizing lakes. This study therefore involved biweekly in-situ monitoring to evaluate fluctuations in the partial pressure (pCO2) and flux (fCO2) of CO2 and associated parameters from January to September 2020 (7:00-17:00 CST) in an urbanizing lake in southwestern China. Our study revealed that during the daylight hours of the 11 sampling days, both pCO2 and fCO2 consistently demonstrated decreasing trends from the early morning period to the late afternoon period, with notable increases on May 7th and August 15th, respectively. Interestingly, unlike our previous findings, an nonsignificant difference (p > 0.05) in mean pCO2 and fCO2 was observed between the morning period and the afternoon period (n = 22). Furthermore, the mean pCO2 in January (~105 μatm; n = 4) and April (133-212 μatm; n = 8) was below the typical atmospheric CO2 level (C-sink), while that in the other months surpassed 410 μatm (C-source), although the average values (n = 44) of pCO2 and fCO2 were 960 ± 841 μatm and 57 ± 85 mmol m-2 h-1, respectively. Moreover, the pCO2 concentration was significantly greater in summer (May to August, locally reaching 1087 μatm) than in spring (January to April at 112 μatm), indicating a seasonal shift between the C-sink (spring) and the C-source (summer). In addition, a significant positive correlation in pCO2/fCO2 with chlorophyll-a/nitrate but a negative correlation in dissolved oxygen and total phosphorus were recorded, suggesting that photosynthesis and respiration were identified as the main drivers of CO2 absorption/emissions, while changes in nitrate and phosphorus may be attributed to urbanization. Overall, our investigations indicated that this lightly eutrophic lake demonstrated a distinct shifting pattern of CO2 source-sink variability at daily and seasonal scales.

Abstract:Abstract Inland waters are significant emitters of greenhouse gases for the atmosphere and play an important role in the global carbon cycle. With a vast land area in East Asia spanning a broad range of climatic conditions, China has a large number of natural and human‐made water bodies. These inland water systems are of global importance because of their high carbon emission fluxes. Over the past decades, China has experienced unprecedented environmental changes driven by rapid economic development, which have profoundly modified its inland water carbon biogeochemistry and associated emissions. This review focuses on carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and methane (CH 4 ) emission dynamics from China's inland waters in response to global change. Major drivers of CO 2 and CH 4 emissions, including aquatic metabolism, hydrological and climatic factors, and prevailing human impacts, are examined. To advance our understanding of carbon emissions from China's inland waters, we further identify several critical knowledge gaps, such as inadequate research in headwater streams and the climate‐sensitive Tibetan Plateau aquatic ecosystems. Furthermore, insufficient understanding of carbon emissions from inland waters undergoing extensive human interventions (e.g., damming, flow regulation, pollution, and farming practices in aquaculture ponds) is highlighted. We suggest that future efforts should be made to better capture the spatiotemporal heterogeneity in dissolved CO 2 and CH 4 concentrations and fluxes across China as well as their long‐term trends. To overcome uncertainties in carbon sources and current flux estimates, future research to mechanistically understand carbon transport and transformation in Chinese inland waters and their underlying processes is particularly needed.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from river water have sparked worldwide concerns due to supersaturate CO2 levels in the majority of global rivers, while the knowledge on the associations among nitrogen pollution, urbanization, and CO2 emissions is still limited. In this study, the CO2 partial pressure (pCO2), carbon and nitrogen species, and water parameters in sewage-draining river networks were investigated. Extremely high pCO2 levels were observed in sewage and drainage river waters, such as Longfeng River, Beijing-drainage River, and Beitang-drainage River, which were approximately 4 times higher than the averaged pCO2 in worldwide rivers. Correlations of carbon/nitrogen species and pCO2 indicated that carbon dioxide in rural rivers and sewage waters primarily originated from soil aeration zones and biological processes of organic carbon/nitrogen input from drainage waters, while that in urban rivers and lakes was mainly dominated by organic matter degradation and biological respiration. Enhanced internal primary productivity played critical roles in absorbing CO2 by photosynthesis in some unsaturated pCO2 sampling sites. Additionally, higher pCO2 levels have been observed with higher NH4+-N and lower DO. CO2 fluxes in sewage waters exhibited extremely high levels compared with those of natural rivers. The results could provide implications for assessing CO2 emissions in diverse waters and fulfilling water management polices when considering water contamination under intense anthropogenic activities.

Abstract:Urban rivers are recognized as significant sources of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Despite this, the influence of land use and urbanization on carbon emissions across rural-urban rivers at the watershed scale has been insufficiently explored. This study utilized in-situ surveys of the Liao River in northern China to investigate the spatial and temporal variations of CH4 and CO2 emissions and their relationship with urbanization and its potential controlling factors. The findings revealed that CH4 emissions peaked in fall, whereas CO2 emissions were highest in summer. The average fluxes of CH4 and CO2 at the water-gas interface were 1387.22 ± 2474.98 µmol·m-2·d-1 and 52.78 ± 54.44 mmol·m-2·d-1, respectively. Water quality parameters accounted for 80.49 % of the total variation in CH4 and CO2 concentrations and fluxes. Structural equation modeling indicated that TN, TP, DTC, and conductivity had direct effects on riverine CH4 and CO2 emissions, with standardized direct effects of 0.50 and 0.49, respectively. Nutrient input emerged as the primary driver, increasing CH4 and CO2 concentrations and fluxes, particularly in urban-adjacent river sections likely receiving higher nutrient loads. This study underscores that land use and urbanization indirectly influence riverine CH4 and CO2 emissions by modifying nutrient inputs. Effective land use management and nutrient input control are recommended strategies to mitigate riverine CH4 and CO2 emissions.

Abstract:Accurately quantifying the carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions from lakes, especially in urban areas, remains challenging due to constrained temporal resolution in field monitoring. Current lake CO 2 flux estimates primarily rely on daylight measurements, yet nighttime emissions is normally overlooked. In this study, a non-dispersive infrared CO 2 sensor was applied to measure dissolved CO 2 concentrations over a 24-h period in a largest urban lake (Tangxun Lake) in Wuhan City, Central China, yielding extensive data on diel variability of CO 2 concentrations and emissions. We showed the practicality and efficiency of the sensor for real-time continuous measurements in lakes. Our findings revealed distinct diurnal variations in CO 2 concentrations (Day: 38.58 ± 23.8 μmol L −1 ; Night: 42.01 ± 20.2 μmol L −1 ) and fluxes (Day: 7.68 ± 10.34 mmol m −2 d −1 ; Night: 9.68 ± 9.19 mmol m −2 d −1 ) in the Tangxun Lake. The balance of photosynthesis and respiration is of utmost importance in modulating diurnal CO 2 dynamics and can be influenced by nutrient loadings and temperature. A diel variability correction factor of 1.14 was proposed, suggesting that daytime-only measurements could underestimate CO 2 emissions in urban lakes. Our data suggested that samplings between 11:00 and 12:00 could better represent the average diel CO 2 fluxes. This study offered valuable insights on the diel variability of CO 2 fluxes, emphasizing the importance of in situ continuous measurements to accurately quantify CO 2 emissions, facilitating selections of sampling strategies and formulation of management strategies for urban lakes.

Abstract:Investigations into the effect of crop load on yield and fruit quality of young apple ‘Golden Delicious’, grafted on M9 rootstock was conducted in years 1998-1999. The orchard was planted in the spring 1997, at a spacing of 3.0 x 0.8 m (4166 trees/ha) and trained to super spindle. On the basis of the rate of natural fruit drop in the second growing year, three experimental groups were established, classified as trees of low (A), medium (B) and high initial productivity (C). Abstract:Abstract Carbon evasion from urban river networks becomes increasingly significant as urbanization accelerates. However, there remains a limited understanding of the overall carbon emission impact integrating CO 2 and CH 4 dynamics, particularly in response to ecological restoration efforts. In this study, we investigated patterns of fluvial CO 2 and CH 4 diffusive fluxes across an urban river network in Wuxi, China. Our results reveal that water quality variables, especially dissolved oxygen (DO) and phosphorus content, predominantly influence the variability of carbon emissions. These factors exhibit a stronger correlation with CO 2 emissions compared to CH 4 , indicating a net increase in carbon emissions as water quality deteriorates. Seasonally, higher water temperatures, phosphate levels, and lower DO concentrations lead to increased carbon emissions during summer months. Spatially, areas with lower carbon emissions (averaged 86 mmol m −2 d −1 CO 2 and 0.13 mmol m −2 d −1 CH 4 ) are primarily situated near the lake and in river sections where significant water quality improvements have been achieved through ecological restoration efforts. Cluster analysis shows that over 60% of high‐carbon emission (averaged 162 mmol m −2 d −1 CO 2 and 1.21 mmol m −2 d −1 CH 4 ) sites in the study area have undergone ecological restoration, suggesting potential for further carbon emission reduction through enhanced restoration practices. Our findings underscore the importance of implementing carbon reduction strategies such as nutrient removal and aeration for oxygenation within water ecological restoration initiatives. Effective matching of restoration strategies holds further potential for mitigating carbon emissions from urban river networks.

Abstract:Rapid urbanization has been reported to affect carbon biogeochemical cycle of waterways, contributing to even higher carbon dioxide (CO2) outgassing from rivers to the atmosphere. However, knowledge on the magnitude and extent of the urbanization influence on riverine CO2 dynamics is still limited. In this study, we investigated partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) and CO2 degassing rate in the surface water of three rivers that drain land areas with varied urban coverages. Field sampling and measurements were conducted in the Taohua, Nan and Puli Rivers in China's mountainous Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) area during winter 2018 and summer 2019 to determine the effect of urbanization intensity on riverine CO2 degassing. We found that pCO2 level was significantly higher in the river with increased proportion of urban land. Both pCO2 level and CO2 flux rate of the Taohua River (3872 μatm and 574 mmol m−2 d−1) with the highest urban land coverage were significantly higher than those of the Nan River (1737 μatm and 218 mmol m−2 d−1) and Puli River (1218 μatm and 130 mmol m−2 d−1) that drain less urbanized land areas. No significant seasonal difference in pCO2 was found in these subtropical rivers (2402 ± 1421 vs 2112 ± 1254 μatm in the summer and the winter). Overall, pCO2 was positively correlated with the concentration of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), nutrients (i.e., TDN and TDP), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and colony-forming units (CFU), and was negatively correlated with pH and dissolved oxygen (DO). We found that pH and DOC loading were the better parameters for predicting pCO2 in the river draining more urbanized land area, and pH and Chl-a were the better parameters for predicting pCO2 in the river draining less urbanized area. These findings highlight the role that urbanization plays in increasing riverine pCO2 through increasing nutrient and DOC inputs from the drainage basin under urban development.
