Abstract:A novel disposable all-solid-state carbonate-selective electrode based on a screen-printed carbon paste electrode using poly(3-octylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (POT) as an ion-to-electron transducer has been developed. The POT was dropped onto the reaction area of the carbon paste electrode covered by the poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane, which contains N, N-Dioctyl-3a, 12a-bis(4-trifluoroacetylbenzoyloxy)-5 beta-cholan-24-amide as a carbonate ionophore. The electrode showed a near-Nernstian slope of -27.5 mV/decade with a detection limit of 3.6 * 10-5 mol l-1. Generally, the detection time was 30 s. Because these electrodes are fast, convenient and low in cost, they have the potential to be mass produced and used in on-site testing as disposable sensors. Furthermore, the repeatability, reproducibility and stability have been studied to evaluate the properties of the electrodes. Measurement of the carbonate was also conducted in a human blood solution and achieved good performance.
Miniaturized inkjet-printed flexible ion-selective sensing electrodes with the addition of graphene in PVC layer for fast response real-time monitoring applications

Abstract:In this letter, we propose a miniaturization scheme of inkjet printed ionic sensing electrodes by adding graphene into the ion-selective PVC film not only to reduce the impedance of the ionic liquid layer of the electrode but also to increase the electrode capacitance for the reduction of the response time. Based on the scheme, we present a fully inkjet-printed electrochemical ion-selective sensor comprising a working electrode and reference electrode, which are inkjet-printed Ag NPs/PEDOT:PSS-graphene/PVC -graphene and Ag/AgCl (s) /ionic liquid PVC-graphene layer structures, respectively. The printed ion-selective working electrode has been miniaturized to a size of 22,400 μm 2 equivalent to a square shape of ∼150 × 150 μm 2 comparable to the size of a human cell. By adding graphene to the ion selective PVC film, more than 90 % charge transfer resistance reduction can be achieved and the shunt capacitance is increased by 3.4-fold in shunt capacitance compared to the film without graphene, thereby more than 33 % reduction of the response time required to reach equilibrium. Meanwhile, the se miniaturized potassium sensors using the working electrodes with/without adding graphene have been integrated with in-lab signal-processing and wireless-transmission module to yield similar results to the one measured by commercial electrochemical workstation showing a great potential for real-time monitoring in portable clinical trials. Specifically, the proposed sensor utilizing graphene-enhanced electrodes demonstrates a linearity uncertainty of 2.9 mV, which is approximately half of the uncertainty observed in the sensors lacking graphene integration.

Abstract:The development of gonadotropin receptors for LH and hCG in the fetal rabbit testis from 17-29 days of gestation was followed by quantitative binding studies with [125I]iodohCG and compared with gonadal testosterone content and the histological differentiation of the fetal Leydig cells. The concentrations of gonadotropin receptors and testosterone in the fetal testis were low on days 17 and 18 and increased strikingly on day 19. This time sequence for development of LH-hCG receptors and steroid content of the testis was correlated exactly with the histological appearance of the endoplasmic reticulum characteristic of the differentiated Leydig cell. When fetal testes were examined at 12-h intervals between days 17 and 19, gonadotropin binding and testosterone content were closely correlated at all times studied. Thus, no dissociation between the two functions was demonstrable in the testis at any time during gestation. In the fetal ovary, LH-hCG binding and testosterone content were low or undetectable at all stages of gestation. These observations demonstrate a close temporal relationship between the appearance of the LH-hCG receptor and the synthesis of testosterone by the fetal testis and demonstrate that the histological and functional differentiation of the Leydig cell occurs within a few hours at approximately day 18 of gestation. The simultaneous appearance of LH-hCG receptors and testosterone synthesis in the gonad can be regarded as the biochemical manifestations of Leydig cell differentiation in the testis of the fetal rabbit.

Abstract:The emerging demand for flexible, portable, easily accessible, and cost-effective electronic fabrication has motivated the development of novel techniques to manufacture electronic components and devices. Inspired by daily hand-writing, an all-written potentiometric sensor was developed by using a Chinese brush pen-based writing technique. A writing ink made from graphene nanosheet (GN) as a conductive component, Triton X-100 as a stabilizer, and xanthan gum as a binder, was used to obtain flexible electrode substrate. Results demonstrate the GN ink-based writing electrode (GN-WE) possesses good conductivity, fast electron-transfer kinetics, considerable stability, and favorable flexibility. By further writing cadmium ion selective membrane (Cd2+-ISM) and photopolymerized reference membrane (RM) on the surface of GN-WE, an all-solid-state potentiometric sensor for cadmium ion was constructed. A large bulk capacitance (41.67 μF) and excellent potential stability (drift of 0.156 mV h-1) were achieved at the developed all-written potentiometric sensor, which is much superior to the solid-contact potentiometric sensor using GCE as electrode substrate. Furthermore, real sample analysis reveals that our GN ink-based potentiometric sensor could be used as a reliable and stable sensor for cadmium ion detection in food and in the environment.

Abstract:With the development of industrial and medical technology, chemical sensors based on electron charge carriers are difficult to meet the upping requirements on excellent sensitivity, good selectivity, and portability. Herein, a new type of sensing material is developed via facile preparation method. Metal ions, instead of electrons, are used as charge carriers and distributed in the polymer matrix. As a representative, the ionic conductive gas sensor based on polyacrylic acid and copper ions (PAA-Cu(II)) is fabricated. The PAA-Cu(II) sensor exhibits excellent linear response to ammonia (NH3), together with high sensitivity (50.3% for 50 ppm NH3), good selectivity, and fast response/recovery time (10/10.5 s). The sensor also displays high transparency, long-term air stability, and excellent flexibility. In addition, sensor arrays based on various metal ions (Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Ag+, Fe3+, Mg2+) and polymers (polyacrylic acid, polyvinyl alcohol, polyethyleneimine) are also developed, and the sensing properties are investigated. The results suggest that metal ions-based capacitive flexible sensors have great potential for low-cost chemical sensors and provide a promising strategy for developing new sensing materials.
Conductive Inks Based on Melamine Intercalated Graphene Nanosheets for Inkjet Printed Flexible Electronics

Abstract:With the growing number of flexible electronics applications, environmentally benign ways of mass-producing graphene electronics are sought. In this study, we present a scalable mechanochemical route for the exfoliation of graphite in a planetary ball mill with melamine to form melamine-intercalated graphene nanosheets (M-GNS). M-GNS morphology was evaluated, revealing small particles, down to 14 nm in diameter and 0.4 nm thick. The M-GNS were used as a functional material in the formulation of an inkjet-printable conductive ink, based on green solvents: water, ethanol, and ethylene glycol. The ink satisfied restrictions regarding stability and nanoparticle size; in addition, it was successfully inkjet printed on plastic sheets. Thermal and photonic post-print processing were evaluated as a means of reducing the electrical resistance of the printed features. Minimal sheet resistance values (5 kΩ/sq for 10 printed layers and 626 Ω/sq for 20 printed layers) were obtained on polyimide sheets, after thermal annealing for 1 h at 400 °C and a subsequent single intense pulsed light flash. Lastly, a proof-of-concept simple flexible printed circuit consisting of a battery-powered LED was realized. The demonstrated approach presents an environmentally friendly alternative to mass-producing graphene-based printed flexible electronics.

Abstract:Carbon nanomaterials such as graphene exhibit unique material properties including high electrical conductivity, surface area, and biocompatibility that have the potential to significantly improve the performance of electrochemical sensors. Since in-field electrochemical sensors are typically disposable, they require materials that are amenable to low-cost, high-throughput, and scalable manufacturing. Conventional graphene devices based on low-yield chemical vapor deposition techniques are too expensive for such applications, while low-cost alternatives such as screen and inkjet printing do not possess sufficient control over electrode geometry to achieve favorable electrochemical sensor performance. In this work, aerosol jet printing (AJP) is used to create high-resolution (~40 μm line width) interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) on flexible substrates, which are then converted into histamine sensors by covalently linking monoclonal antibodies to oxygen moieties created on the graphene surface through a CO2 thermal annealing process. The resulting electrochemical sensors exhibit a wide histamine sensing range of 6.25–200 ppm (56.25 μM–1.8 mM) and a low detection limit of 3.41 ppm (30.7 μM) within actual tuna broth samples. These sensor metrics are significant since histamine levels over 50 ppm in fish induce adverse health effects including severe allergic reactions (e.g. Scombroid food poisoning). Beyond the histamine case study presented here, the AJP and functionalization process can likely be generalized to a diverse range of sensing applications including environmental toxin detection, foodborne pathogen detection, wearable health monitoring, and health diagnostics.

Abstract:Flexible sensing devices have drawn tremendous attention in the past decades due to their potential applications in future hand-held, potable consumer, and wearable electronics. Here, we firstly developed an ultrasensitive wireless potentiometric aptasensor based on flexible freestanding graphene paper for kanamycin detection. Flexible graphene paper made from a simple vacuum filtration method was used as a biocompatible platform for effective immobilization of aptamer. A nuclease-assisted amplification strategy was introduced into this potentiometric biosensing system in order to significantly improve the detection sensitivity through a classic catalytic recycling reaction of target induced by the nuclease (DNase I). As expected, an ultra-low detection limit of 30.0 fg/mL for kanamycin was achieved. Furthermore, the developed potentiometric enzymatic aptasensor exhibits high selectivity, favorable flexibility, excellent stability and reproducibility, which holds great promising for its routine sensing application.

Abstract:High-sensitivity ammonia gas sensors are paramount to many fields in our industries and lives. Due to its complicated fabrication processes, large size and long recovery time of most existing ammonia gas sensors, we present a micron-scale graphene-based ammonia gas sensor using aerosol-jet printing technology. The graphene sensor exhibited high response sensitivity (∼4.64 % for 4.35 ppm NH3 and ∼52.01 % for 97.19 ppm NH3, respectively), short adsorption / desorption time ranging from 50 s to 150 s, good reversibility and repeatability. Further employment of micro-heater close to the sensing line reduced desorption time more than ∼14.3 % when 10 V being applied onto the heater. Such design of the ammonia gas sensor by aerosol-jet printing can give an insight for graphene-based ammonia gas sensors, which may pave a way for the convenient integration with other sensors in portable instruments for coal miners and pathfinders etc.

Abstract:An all-solid-state ammonium ion-selective electrode, with silver/nano-silver wire as the substrate, polyaniline as transducer and poly (o-phenylenediamine) as sensitive membrane, is presented. The nano-silver was prepared by electrodeposition in 0.1 M AgNO3 standard solution with the half-sine wave at amplitude of 500 mV, frequency of 50 HZ and action time of 1 min. The polyaniline and poly (o-phenylenediamine) were electropolymerized on the surface of the silver/nano-silver substrate by cyclic voltammetry with the scanning potential from 0 to 0.45 V in solutions of 1.0 M aniline hydrochloride and 0.08 M o-phenylenediamine hydrochloride, respectively. Under the SEM, poly (o-phenylenediamine) with 0.5-5 mu m in size was evenly and firmly embedded on the surface of the PANI. This ammonium electrode exhibited low impedance of approximately 70 Ohm. It can detect as low as 1.2 x10(-5) M of ammonium ion, with the slopes of 54.99-55.70 mV per decade (R-2>0.99) within a linear range between 2 x 10(-5) M to 0.1 M. It responds as quickly as 0.5-2 s, as well as its lifespan extends to at least 147 days. The electrode showed a superior selectivity toward NH4+, and was successfully applied to detect the NH4+ concentration in real samples. In addition, this electrode is miniature and convenient for package and assembly, which will enable in-situ measurement and long-term monitoring of NH4+ concentration in rivers, lakes and industrial sewage.

Abstract:Disposable, flexible and low-cost coated biosensor electrode obtained by printing conductive inks presents a great potential as health monitoring devices. A novel and highly conductive coating of graphene ink was printed on a flexible substrate using the stencil method to prepare a sensitive biosensor for enzymatic electrochemical detection of glucose. A novel water-based graphene ink including an acrylic copolymer was formulated in this work. The Sheet resistance was obtained in the range of 42.14 Ω/sq in new formulation of the newly proposed graphene ink to make it a proper candidate for flexible biosensor manufacturing. The sensitivity and limit of detection of 16.42 μA·mM−1·cm−2 and 1.34 mM were respectively achieved for the biosensor in the linear range of 28 mM. The results signified high selectivity against interfering species such as ascorbic acid and lactose, and high repeatability and reproducibility with low relative standard deviation values of 1.04 % and 1.5 %, respectively, for the device. No considerable reduction in the printed electrochemical biosensor (PEB) performance was observed after bending cycles of up to 100, indicating the high flexibility of the biosensor. The PEB presented a great potential to be used as a personalized glucose monitoring device in complex biological fluids.

Abstract:This study reveals the fabrication of a gas sensor with a PEDOT:PSS/graphene ink composite as an active layer on glossy paper. The glossy paper was chosen as the substrate material due to its low cost and easy availability. PEDOT:PSS/graphene ink was synthesized by simple mixing of PEDOT:PSS and graphene solution in the presence of distilled water, ethanol, glycerol, and diethylene glycol and was then sonicated and stirred at room temperature and characterized by FTIR, UV, XRD, AFM, and SEM. The sensitivity of the gas sensors towards acetonitrile, propanol, butanol, benzene, methanol, and ammonia analytes was investigated by measuring the change in resistance using a conventional multimeter at room temperature. The results exhibited that the composite's response to ammonia change is stable and can measure concentration were the results also indicate that the sensors show promising responses with ± 1% reading error with a high response percentage.

Effect of Cremophor-EL on Cisplatin-Induced Organ Toxicity in Normal Rat

Abstract:Cisplatin in an inorganic platinum compound with a broad spectrum antineoplastic activity against different types of tumours. Pharmacological and cytogenetic evaluations of the possible protective effects of cremophor-EL (cremophor) against cisplatin-induced nephro-, hepatoand bone marrow toxicity in normal rats were carried out. A single dose of cisplatin (7.5 mg/kg i.v.) caused acute nephrotoxicity biochemically manifested as an increase in serum urea nitrogen (528%) and serum creatinine (1307%). Serum alanine and aspartate aminotransferase levels were also increased. In the liver tissue, glutathione level (GSH) decreased significantly 7 days after cisplatin treatment. Cisplatin caused a significant increase in the frequency of micronuclei (MN) of polychromatic erythrocytes (PCEs) and normochromatic erythrocytes (NCEs), as well as the ratio of PCEs/NCEs. Moreover, a significant delay in the mitotic activity was observed after cisplatin treatment. Administration of cremophor at a dose of 50 µl/ kg intravenously 5 minutes before cisplatin protected the kidney and liver as indicated by restoration of urea and creatinine concentrations, as well as aminotransferase activities. Pretreatment with cremophor resulted in a significant recovery in the frequency of cisplatin-induced increase in MV, in the ratio of PCEs/NCEs, as well as in the MI of bone marrow. Administration of cremophor before cisplatin did not interfere with the antitumour activity of cisplatin in EAC-bearing mice. These results suggest that cremophor administration may play a role to prevent cisplatin-induced damage to the kidney, liver and bone marrow without interfering with its antitumour activity.

Abstract:The inkjet printing of metal electrodes on polymer films is a desirable manufacturing process due to its simplicity but is limited by the lack of thermal stability and serious delaminating flaws in various aqueous and organic solutions. Kapton, adopted worldwide due to its superior thermal durability, allows the high-temperature sintering of nanoparticle-based metal inks. By carefully selecting inks (Ag and Au) and Kapton substrates (Kapton HN films with a thickness of 135 μm and a thermal resistance of up to 400 °C) with optimal printing parameters and simplified post-treatments (sintering), outstanding film integrity, thermal stability, and antidelaminating features were obtained in both aqueous and organic solutions without any pretreatment strategy (surface modification). These films were applied in four novel devices: a solid-state ion-selective (IS) nitrate (NO3-) sensor, a single-stranded DNA (ssDNA)-based mercury (Hg2+) aptasensor, a low-cost protein printed circuit board (PCB) sensor, and a long-lasting organic thin-film transistor (OTFT). The IS NO3- sensor displayed a linear sensitivity range between 10-4.5 and 10-1 M (r2 = 0.9912), with a limit of detection of 2 ppm for NO3-. The Hg2+ sensor exhibited a linear correlation (r2 = 0.8806) between the change in the transfer resistance (RCT) and the increasing concentration of Hg2+. The protein PCB sensor provided a label-free method for protein detection. Finally, the OTFT demonstrated stable performance, with mobility values in the linear (μlin) and saturation (μsat) regimes of 0.0083 ± 0.0026 and 0.0237 ± 0.0079 cm2 V-1 S-1, respectively, and a threshold voltage (Vth) of -6.75 ± 3.89 V.

Abstract:The preparation of printed flexible conductive electrodes is a very important step to realize low-cost preparation of ultra-low power consumption wearable electronic devices. Although silver ink has shown excellent conductivity and stability in the printed electronic devices, many critical issues including particle-to-particle disconnection under mechanical stress must be addressed before it is applied in the flexible field. Here, we have proposed a one-step in-situ synthesis of low-cost Ag ink doped with graphene. It is demonstrated the effectiveness of the printed Ag network embedded by graphene as flexible electrodes, and investigated their conductive, mechanical and microstructural properties. As a metal-based reinforcing material, graphene could improve the flexibility of the metal-based matrix through effects such as stress transfer, dislocation strengthening, and grain refinement, while maintaining their low resistance. In this work, the electrodes obtained from the functional material with graphene mass fraction of 6.7% exhibit a low resistivity of 4.81 × 10−7 Ω•m. Even after 100,000 cycles of bending cycles, the printed electrodes could almost still maintain the initial conductivity. The facile synthesis and good properties make the material have great application potential in wearable electronic devices.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to deal with an identification of a novel ink-jet printing sensor fabrication technology for fabricating flexible carbon heaters of macro and micro sizes, carbon interdigitated (IDT) electrodes and silver IDT electrodes. The technology involved in the proposed ink-jet printing method and materials used for the formulation of homemade nano-conductive inks (digital inks) are discussed in detail. The ink-jet printed flexible carbon heaters of different sizes (macro and micro) and carbon IDT electrodes and flexible silver IDT electrodes can be used as the flexible sensing layers in electrochemical gas sensors for sensitive and selective gas sensing applications. The characterization of ink-jet printed carbon heaters on Kapton substrate and its results are discussed. Similarly, the results of formulation of silver nano-conductive ink and printing of silver IDT electrodes on Kapton and its characterization are reported here for the first time. Design/methodology/approach Flexible carbon heaters of different sizes (macro and micro), carbon micro-IDT electrodes and silver IDT electrodes patterns were developed using AutoCAD 2D and printed on the Kapton (polyimide sheet) flexible substrate using the home-made nano-conductive inks with the help of EpsonT60 commercial piezo-head-based drop-on demand technology printer with standard printing options. Findings The proposed novel method is able to print heater patterns and IDT electrode patterns of approximately 12 μm and approximately 1 μm thickness, respectively, on flexible substrate using the home-made nano-conductive inks of carbon and silver by using a commercial low-cost printer. The home-made nano-conductive inks can be re-used for multiple prints up to six months shelf life. The resistance of the carbon heater was measured as 88 O under normal atmospheric condition. The novel flexible carbon heater was tested for its functionality and found to be satisfactory. The resistance of the silver IDT flexible electrodes was measured as 9.5 O which is better than the earlier works carried out in this paper. Research limitations/implications The main challenge is associated with cleaning of printing ink ejection system in the existing commercial printers. The customization of the existing printer in the near future can minimize the printing challenges. Practical implications The novel ink-jet printing technology proposed in this work is cost-effective, capable of achieving bulk production of flexible sensor elements, and consumes the least device fabrication time and high material yielding. The printing can be done with commercial piezo-head-based ink-jet printers with custom-prepared nano-conductive inks. There is a huge market potential for this paper. Originality/value Both the carbon heaters and silver IDT electrodes were printed on Kapton flexible substrate by using the commercial printer for the first time. The paper is promising the revolution in flexible low-cost sensor fabrication for mass production, and it is an alternate for thin film and thick sensor fabrication methods. The future of sensor fabrication technology will be the ink-jet printing method. In this paper, the research developments of flexible carbon heaters and flexible silver IDT electrodes for the time are reported. The characterization of carbon heaters and silver IDT electrodes were carried out and confirmed that the results are favourable for gas sensor applications.

Abstract:With the advent of flexible electronics, the old fashioned and conventional solid-state technology will be replaced by conductive inks combined with low-cost printing techniques. Graphene is an ideal candidate to produce conductive inks, due to its excellent conductivity and zero bandgap. The possibility to chemically modify graphene with active molecules opens up the field of responsive conductive inks. Herein, a bioresponsive, electroactive, and inkjet-printable graphene ink is presented. The ink is based on graphene chemically modified with selected enzymes and an electrochemical mediator, to transduce the products of the enzymatic reaction into an electron flow, proportional to the analyte concentration. A water-based formulation is engineered to be respectful with the enzymatic activity while matching the stringent requirements of inkjet printing. The efficient electrochemical performance of the ink, as well as a proof-of-concept application in biosensing, is demonstrated. The versatility of the system is demonstrated by modifying graphene with various oxidoreductases, obtaining inks with selectivity toward glucose, lactate, methanol, and ethanol.

Abstract:The PVDF shields the electrodes from charged soil particles while allowing the passage of water. This feature ensures effective operation and provides protection from the soil environments, enabling direct sensing of nitrate in a medium that is similar to aqueous solutions. The printed potentiometric sensors exhibit sensitivities ranging from sensitivities 45–55 mv decade−1. Agricultural intensification has increased the use of chemical fertilizers, promoting plant growth and crop yield. Excessive use of nitrogen fertilizers leads to nutrient loss and low nitrogen use efficiency. Management of nitrogen fertilizer input requires close to real‐time information about the soil nitrate concentration. While there is extensive work developing nitrate ion sensing solutions for liquid media, few allow for in‐soil measurements. This study introduces inkjet‐printed potentiometric sensors, containing 2 electrodes, the reference electrode (RE) and the nitrate‐selective film‐encapsulated working electrode (WE). The interaction between the nitrate‐sensitive membrane and soil nitrate ions causes a change in potential across the RE and WE. Additionally, a hydrophilic Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) layer ensures the long‐term functionality of the sensor in wet soil environments by protecting it from charged soil particles while simultaneously allowing water to flow from the soil toward the sensor electrodes. The sensors are tested in sand and silt loam soil, demonstrating their versatility across soil types. The potential change can be related to the nitrate concentration in soil, with typical sensitivities of 45–55 mV decade−1. Overall, the use of the PVDF layer allows for direct sensing in moist soil environments, which is critical for developing soil nitrate sensors.

Abstract:Graphene production methods are typically complex and include micromechanical exfoliation, reduction of graphene oxide in the liquid phase, and epitaxial growth. However, a more efficient and rapid alternative is the thermal conversion of polyimide into graphene by laser pyrolysis, offering a simpler and faster approach. Thus, this paper introduces an electrochemical platform based on laser-induced graphene generated from a visible light source to detect amoxicillin. For this purpose, a laboratory-constructed 3D-printer was utilized. In this setup, a visible laser source emitting at 449.2 nm with a maximum power output of 3.5 W was integrated into the extrusion nozzle of a fused deposition modeling 3D-printer to manufacture graphene electrodes from polyimide sheets. Subsequently, a differential pulse voltammetry method was proposed showing an oxidation peak at +0.52 V (vs Ag|AgCl|KCl (sat.) ). The sensor exhibited a wide linear working range from 9.60 to 103.3 μmol L −1 , a limit of detection of 5.4 μmol L −1 , adequate precision (RSD < 7%), and recovery values of 90% to 107% when applied to milk samples, synthetic urine, and pharmaceutical formulations. The sensor is free from interference with other drugs commonly used in human and veterinary medicine. Herein, we report for the first time a robust, scalable, and inexpensive sensor based on a flexible substrate for the detection of amoxicillin in different matrices. It stands as an accessible possibility for routine analysis in clinical and pharmaceutical contexts.
