Abstract:Previous studies have shown that creative thinking is associated with metacontrol, but its neural basis is unknown. The present study explored the neural basis of both by assessing EEG complexity through multiscale entropy. Subjects were engaged in a metacontrol task and an Alternative Uses Task, grouped according to task performance, and the EEG was analysed by multiscale entropy. The results showed that EEG complexity was significantly higher in the high-metacontrol and high-creativity groups than in the low-metacontrol and low-creativity groups, respectively, at high time scales. The metacontrol adaptability score and multipurpose task score were significantly and positively correlated with the EEG complexity at multiple electrode sites. It suggests that metacontrol and creativity are dependent on the activation of long-duration neural networks.

Abstract:We investigated the simultaneous influence of expectation and experience on metacontrol, which we define as the instantiation of context-specific control states. These states could entail heightened control states in preparation for frequent task switching or lowered control states for task repetition. Specifically, we examined whether "expectations" regarding future control demands prompt proactive metacontrol, while "experiences" with items associated with specific control demands facilitate reactive metacontrol. In Experiment 1, we utilized EEG with a high temporal resolution to differentiate between brain activities associated with proactive and reactive metacontrol. We successfully observed cue-locked and image-locked ERP patterns associated with proactive and reactive metacontrol, respectively, supporting concurrent instantiation of two metacontrol modes. In Experiment 2, we focused on individual differences to investigate the modulatory role of working memory capacity (WMC) in the concurrent instantiation of two metacontrol modes. Our findings revealed that individuals with higher WMC exhibited enhanced proactive metacontrol, indicated by smaller response time variability (RTV). Additionally, individuals with higher WMC showed a lower tendency to rely on reactive metacontrol, indicated by a smaller item-specific switch probability (ISSP) effect. In conclusion, our results suggest that proactive and reactive metacontrol can coexist, but their interplay is influenced by individuals' WMC. Higher WMC promotes the use of proactive metacontrol while attenuating reliance on reactive metacontrol. This study provides insights into the interplay between proactive and reactive metacontrol and highlights the impact of WMC on their concurrent instantiation.

Boundaries in the eyes: measure event segmentation during naturalistic video watching using eye tracking

Abstract:During naturalistic information processing, individuals spontaneously segment their continuous experiences into discrete events, a phenomenon known as event segmentation. Traditional methods for assessing this process, which include subjective reports and neuroimaging techniques, often disrupt real-time segmentation or are costly and time intensive. Our study investigated the potential of measuring event segmentation by recording and analyzing eye movements while participants view naturalistic videos. We collected eye movement data from healthy young adults as they watched commercial films (N=104), or online Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) educational courses (N=44). We analyzed changes in pupil size and eye movement speed near event boundaries and employed inter-subject correlation analysis (ISC) and hidden Markov models (HMM) to identify patterns indicative of event segmentation. We observed that both the speed of eye movements and pupil size dynamically responded to event boundaries, exhibiting heightened sensitivity to high-strength boundaries. Our analyses further revealed that event boundaries synchronized eye movements across participants. These boundaries, can be effectively identified by HMM, yielded higher within-event similarity values and aligned with human-annotated boundaries. Importantly, HMM-based event segmentation metrics responded to experimental manipulations and predicted learning outcomes. This study provided a comprehensive computational framework for measuring event segmentation using eye-tracking. With the widespread accessibility of low-cost eye-tracking devices, the ability to measure event segmentation from eye movement data promises to deepen our understanding of this process in diverse real-world settings.

Abstract:Visual search is ubiquitous in daily life and has attracted substantial research interest over the past decades. Although accumulating evidence has suggested complex neurocognitive processes underlying visual search, the neural communication across the brain regions remains poorly understood. The present work aimed to fill this gap by investigating functional networks of fixation-related potential (FRP) during the visual search task. Multi-frequency electroencephalogram (EEG) networks were constructed from 70 university students (male/female = 35/35) using FRPs time-locked to target and non-target fixation onsets, which were determined by concurrent eye-tracking data. Then graph theoretical analysis (GTA) and a data-driven classification framework were employed to quantitatively reveal the divergent reorganization between target and non-target FRPs. We found distinct network architectures between target and non-target mainly in the delta and theta bands. More importantly, we achieved a classification accuracy of 92.74% for target and non-target discrimination using both global and nodal network features. In line with the results of GTA, we found that the integration corresponding to target and non-target FRPs significantly differed, while the nodal features contributing most to classification performance primarily resided in the occipital and parietal-temporal areas. Interestingly, we revealed that females exhibited significantly higher local efficiency in delta band when focusing on the search task. In summary, these results provide some of the first quantitative insights into the underlying brain interaction patterns during the visual search process.
A High-Density EEG Study Investigating VR Film Editing and Cognitive Event Segmentation Theory

Abstract:This paper introduces a cognitive psychological experiment that was conducted to analyze how traditional film editing methods and the application of cognitive event segmentation theory perform in virtual reality (VR). Thirty volunteers were recruited and asked to watch a series of short VR videos designed in three dimensions: time, action (characters), and space. Electroencephalograms (EEG) were recorded simultaneously during their participation. Subjective results show that any of the editing methods used would lead to an increased load and reduced immersion. Furthermore, the cognition of event segmentation theory also plays an instructive role in VR editing, with differences mainly focusing on frontal, parietal, and central regions. On this basis, visual evoked potential (VEP) analysis was performed, and the standardized low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography algorithm (sLORETA) traceability method was used to analyze the data. The results of the VEP analysis suggest that shearing usually elicits a late event-related potential component, while the sources of VEP are mainly the frontal and parietal lobes. The insights derived from this work can be used as guidance for VR content creation, allowing VR image editing to reveal greater richness and unique beauty.
The Neural Basis of Event Segmentation: Stable Features in the Environment are Reflected by Neural States

Abstract:Our senses receive a continuous stream of complex information. Parsing this information into meaningful events allows us to extract relevant information, remember it, and act upon it. Previous research has related these events to so-called neural states: temporally and regionally specific stable patterns of brain activity, which tend to coincide with events in the stimulus. Neural states show a temporal cortical hierarchy: short states are present in early sensory areas, while longer states can be found in higher-level areas. Here we investigated what these neural states represent. We hypothesized that states at different levels of the cortical hierarchy are shaped by aspects of the stimulus to which these brain areas are responsive. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed fMRI data of participants watching a movie, using a data-driven method to identify the neural states. We found support for the aforementioned hypothesis: specifically the parahippocampal place area and retrosplenial cortex, known to be sensitive to places, showed an alignment between neural state boundaries and moments in the movie with a change in location, independent of changes in visual features and other covariates. These findings suggest that neural states reflect stable features in the (internal model of) the external environment, and that the cortical temporal hierarchy partly reflects the temporal scales at which representations of the environment evolve.

Abstract:Cognitive control refers to humans' ability to willingly align thoughts and actions with internally represented goals. Research indicates that cognitive control is not one-dimensional but rather integrates multiple sub-processes to cope with task demands successfully. In particular, the dynamic interplay between preparatory (i.e., prior to goal-relevant events) and adaptive (i.e., in response to unexpected demands) recruitment of neural resources is believed to facilitate successful behavioural performance. However, whether preparatory and adaptive processes draw from independent or shared neural resources, and how these align in the information processing stream, remains unclear. To address these issues, we recorded electroencephalographic data from 52 subjects while they performed a computerised task. Using a combination of mass-univariate and multivariate pattern analysis procedures, we found that different types of control triggered distinct sequences of brain activation patterns, and that the order and temporal extent of these patterns were dictated by the type of control used by the participants. Stimuli that fostered preparatory recruitment of control evoked a sequence of transient occipital-parietal, sustained central-parietal, and sustained fronto-central responses. In contrast, stimuli that indicated the need for quick behavioural adjustments triggered a sequence of transient occipital-parietal, fronto-central, and central parietal responses. There was also a considerable degree of overlap in the temporal evolution of these brain activation patterns, with behavioural performance being mainly related to the magnitude of the central-parietal and fronto-central responses. Our results demonstrate how different neurocognitive mechanisms, such as early attentional allocation and subsequent behavioural selection processes, are likely to contribute to cognitive control. Moreover, our findings extend prior work by showing that these mechanisms are engaged (at least partly) in parallel, rather than independently of each other.

Abstract:"Metacontrol" refers to the ability to find the right balance between more persistent and more flexible cognitive control styles, depending on task demands. Recent research on tasks involving response conflict regulation indicates a consistent link between aperiodic EEG activity and task conditions that demand a more or less persistent control style. In this study, we explored whether this connection between metacontrol and aperiodic activity also applies to cognitive flexibility. We examined EEG and behavioral data from two separate samples engaged in a task-switching paradigm, allowing for an internal replication of our findings. Both studies revealed that aperiodic activity significantly decreased during task switching compared to task repetition. Our results support the predictions of metacontrol theory but contradict those of traditional control theories which would have predicted the opposite pattern of results. We propose that aperiodic activity observed in EEG signals serves as a valid indicator of dynamic neuroplasticity in metacontrol, suggesting that truly adaptive metacontrol does not necessarily bias processing towards persistence in response to every control challenge, but chooses between persistence and flexibility biases depending on the nature of the challenge.

Abstract:Perceiving and modulating emotions is vital for cognitive function and is often impaired in neuropsychiatric conditions. Current tools for evaluating emotional dysregulation suffer from subjectivity and lack of precision, especially when it comes to understanding emotion from a regulatory or control-based perspective. To address these limitations, this study leverages an advanced methodology known as functional brain controllability analysis. We simultaneously recorded electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from 17 healthy subjects engaged in emotion processing and regulation tasks. We then employed a novel EEG/fMRI integration technique to reconstruct cortical activity in a high spatiotemporal resolution manner. Subsequently, we conducted functional brain controllability analysis to explore the neural network control patterns underlying different emotion conditions. Our findings demonstrated that the dorsolateral and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex exhibited increased controllability during the processing and regulation of negative emotions compared to processing of neutral emotion. Besides, the anterior cingulate cortex was notably more active in managing negative emotion than in either controlling neutral emotion or regulating negative emotion. Finally, the posterior parietal cortex emerged as a central network controller for the regulation of negative emotion. This study offers valuable insights into the cortical control mechanisms that support emotion perception and regulation.

Abstract:It is a fundamental ability to discriminate incongruent information in daily activity. However, the underlying neural dynamics are still unclear. Using stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG), in this study, we investigated the fine-grained and different states of incongruent information processing in patients with refractory epilepsy who underwent intracranial electrode implantation. All patients performed a delayed match-to-sample paradigm in the sequential pairs of visual stimuli (S1 followed by S2). Participants were asked to discriminate whether the relevant feature of S2 was identical to S1 while ignoring the irrelevant feature. The spatiotemporal cortical responses evoked by different conditions were calculated and compared, respectively, in the context of brain intrinsic functional networks. In total, we obtained SEEG recordings from 241 contacts in gray matter. In the processing of irrelevant incongruent information, the activated brain areas included the superior parietal lobule, supramarginal gyrus, angular gyrus, inferior temporal gyrus, and fusiform gyrus. By comparing the relevant incongruent condition with the congruent condition, the activated brain areas included the middle frontal gyrus, superior temporal gyrus, middle temporal gyrus, posterior superior temporal sulcus, and posterior cingulate cortex. We demonstrated the dynamics of incongruent information processing with high spatiotemporal resolution and suggested that the process of automatic detection of irrelevant incongruent information requires the involvement of local regions and relatively few networks. Meanwhile, controlled discrimination of relevant incongruent information requires the participation of extensive regions and a wide range of nodes in the network. Furthermore, both the frontoparietal control network and default mode network were engaged in the incongruent information processing.

Control over a mixture of policies determines change of mind topology during continuous choice

Abstract:Behavior is naturally organized into categorically distinct states with corresponding patterns of neural activity; how does the brain control those states? We propose that states are regulated by specific neural processes that implement meta-control that can blend simpler control processes. To test this hypothesis, we recorded from neurons in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) and dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) while macaques performed a continuous pursuit task with two moving prey that followed evasive strategies. We used a novel control theoretic approach to infer subjects’ moment-to-moment latent control variables, which in turn dictated their blend of distinct identifiable control processes. We identified low-dimensional subspaces in neuronal responses that reflected the current strategy, the value of the pursued target, and the relative value of the two targets. The top two principal components of activity tracked changes of mind in abstract and change-type-specific formats, respectively. These results indicate that control of behavioral state reflects the interaction of brain processes found in dorsal prefrontal regions that implement a mixture over low-level control policies.

Abstract:The ability to find the right balance between more persistent and more flexible cognitive‐control styles is known as "metacontrol." Recent findings suggest a relevance of aperiodic EEG activity and task conditions that are likely to elicit a specific metacontrol style. Here we investigated whether individual differences in aperiodic EEG activity obtained off‐task (during resting state) predict individual cognitive‐control styles under task conditions that pose different demands on metacontrol. We analyzed EEG resting‐state data, task‐EEG, and behavioral outcomes from a sample of N = 65 healthy participants performing a Go/Nogo task. We examined aperiodic activity as indicator of "neural noise" in the EEG power spectrum, and participants were assigned to a high‐noise or low‐noise group according to a median split of the exponents obtained for resting state. We found that off‐task aperiodic exponents predicted different cognitive‐control styles in Go and Nogo conditions: Overall, aperiodic exponents were higher (i.e., noise was lower) in the low‐noise group, who however showed no difference between Go and Nogo trials, whereas the high‐noise group exhibited significant noise reduction in the more persistence‐heavy Nogo condition. This suggests that trait‐like biases determine the default cognitive‐control style, which however can be overwritten or compensated for under challenging task demands. We suggest that aperiodic activity in EEG signals represents valid indicators of highly dynamic arbitration between metacontrol styles, representing the brain's capability to reorganize itself and adapt its neural activity patterns to changing environmental conditions.

Abstract:Background: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most frequently diagnosed psychiatric conditions in children and adolescents. Although the symptoms appear to be well described, no coherent conceptual mechanistic framework integrates their occurrence and variance and the associated problems that people with ADHD face. Aims: The current study proposes that altered event segmentation processes provide a novel mechanistic framework for understanding deficits in ADHD. Methods: Adolescents with ADHD and neurotypically developing (NT) peers watched a short movie and were then asked to indicate the boundaries between meaningful segments of the movie. Concomitantly recorded electroencephalography (EEG) data were analysed for differences in frequency band activity and effective connectivity between brain areas. Results: Compared with their NT peers, the ADHD group showed less dependence of their segmentation behaviour on social information, indicating that they did not consider social information to the same extent as their unaffected peers. This divergence was accompanied by differences in EEG theta band activity and a different effective connectivity network architecture at the source level. Specifically, NT adolescents primarily showed error signalling in and between the left and right fusiform gyri related to social information processing, which was not the case in the ADHD group. For the ADHD group, the inferior frontal cortex associated with attentional sampling served as a hub instead, indicating problems in the deployment of attentional control. Conclusions: This study shows that adolescents with ADHD perceive events differently from their NT peers, in association with a different brain network architecture that reflects less adaptation to the situation and problems in attentional sampling of environmental information. The results call for a novel conceptual view of ADHD, based on event segmentation theory.
Meta-awareness, mind-wandering, and the control of ‘default’ external and internal orientations of attention

Abstract:The “default mode” of cognition usually refers to an automatic tendency to simulate past, future, and hypothetical experiences, rather than attending to external events in the moment. “Mind-wandering” usually refers to moments when attention drifts from external tasks to become engaged in internal, default-mode cognition. Both definitions are perhaps limited: the mind can be caught by external objects when attending internally, and objects in the external world can be just as captivating as internal thought, causing attention to drift. To explore the relationship between prepotent internal and external default modes and the bi-directionality of mind-wandering, we measured brain activity in forty participants using fMRI during performance of a focused attention task. Naturalistic movie clips were presented four times in sequence. When subjects tried to focus attention on the videos, more mind-wandering events (distractions from the externally-focused task) occurred as the videos became less interesting with each repetition, and when less engaging videos were presented. When subjects focused internally on their own breath, more mind-wandering events (distractions from the internally-focused task) occurred when videos were most interesting (i.e. on the first repetition) and when more engaging videos were presented. In the whole-brain fMRI data and also in focused analyses of sensory areas and default mode areas, inter-subject correlation analysis revealed cortical signals of attention that corroborated the behavioral results. We suggest that whether the default state is internal or external, and whether the sources that disrupt it are internal or external, depend on context.

The relationship between event boundary strength and pattern shifts across the cortical hierarchy during naturalistic movie-viewing

Abstract:Our continuous experience is spontaneously segmented by the brain into discrete events. However, the beginning of a new event (an event boundary) is not always sharply identifiable: phenomenologically, event boundaries vary in salience. How are the response profiles of cortical areas at event boundaries modulated by boundary strength during complex, naturalistic movie-viewing? Do cortical responses scale in a graded manner with boundary strength, or do they merely detect boundaries in a binary fashion? We measured 'cortical boundary shifts' as transient changes in multi-voxel patterns at event boundaries with different strengths (weak, moderate, and strong), determined by across-subject agreement. Cortical regions with different processing timescales were examined. In auditory areas, which have short timescales, cortical boundary shifts exhibited a clearly graded profile both in group-level and individual-level analyses. In cortical areas with long timescales, including the default mode network, boundary strength modulated pattern shift magnitude at the individual subject level. We also observed a positive relationship between boundary strength and the extent of temporal alignment of boundary shifts across different levels of the cortical hierarchy. Additionally, hippocampal activity was highest at event boundaries for which cortical boundary shifts were most aligned across hierarchical levels. Overall, we found that event boundary strength modulated cortical pattern shifts strongly in sensory areas and more weakly in higher-level areas, and that stronger boundaries were associated with greater alignment of these shifts across the cortical hierarchy.

Here, we simultaneously recorded many hundreds of neurons in the lateral entorhinal cortex (LEC) of freely behaving rats as we manipulated event structure at multiple timescales. During foraging as well as during sleep, population activity drifted continuously and unidirectionally along a one-dimensional manifold. Boundaries between events were associated with discrete shifts in state space, suggesting that LEC dynamics directly reflect event segmentation. During tasks with a recurring temporal structure, activity traveled additionally in directions orthogonal to the flow of drift, enabling the LEC population to multiplex event information across different timescales. Taken together, these results identify a hierarchically organized neural coding scheme for segmenting and organizing events in time.

Abstract:Abstract Cognitive control allows behavior to be guided according to environmental contexts and internal goals. During cognitive control tasks, fMRI analyses typically reveal increased activation in frontal and parietal networks, and EEG analyses reveal increased amplitude of neural oscillations in the delta/theta band (2–3, 4–7 Hz) in frontal electrodes. Previous studies proposed that theta-band activity reflects the maintenance of rules associating stimuli to appropriate actions (i.e., the rule set), whereas delta synchrony is specifically associated with the control over the context for when to apply a set of rules (i.e., the rule abstraction). We tested these predictions using EEG and fMRI data collected during the performance of a hierarchical cognitive control task that manipulated the level of abstraction of task rules and their set-size. Our results show a clear separation of delta and theta oscillations in the control of rule abstraction and of stimulus–action associations, respectively, in distinct frontoparietal association networks. These findings support a model by which frontoparietal networks operate through dynamic, multiplexed neural processes.

Abstract:Cognitive flexibility is critical for humans living in complex societies with ever-growing multitasking demands. Yet the low-frequency neural dynamics of distinct task-specific and domain-general mechanisms sub-serving mental flexibility are still ill-defined. Here we estimated phase electroencephalogram synchronization by using inter-trial phase coherence (ITPC) at the source space while twenty six young participants were intermittently cued to switch or repeat their perceptual categorization rule of Gabor gratings varying in color and thickness (switch task). Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine whether a proactive control is associated with connectivity only in the frontoparietal theta network, or also involves distinct neural connectivity within the delta band, as distinct neural signatures while preparing to switch or repeat a task set, respectively. To this end, we focused the analysis on late-latencies (from 500 to 800 msec post-cue onset), since they are known to be associated with top-down cognitive control processes. We confirmed that proactive control during a task switch was associated with frontoparietal theta connectivity. But importantly, we also found a distinct role of delta band oscillatory synchronization in proactive control, engaging more posterior frontotemporal regions as opposed to frontoparietal theta connectivity. Additionally, we built a regression model by using the ITPC results in delta and theta bands as predictors, and the behavioral accuracy in the switch task as the criterion, obtaining significant results for both frequency bands. All these findings support the existence of distinct proactive cognitive control processes related to functionally distinct though highly complementary theta and delta frontoparietal and temporoparietal oscillatory networks at late-latency temporal scales.
