Abstract:To simulate the longitudinal deformation of shield tunnel, a sophisticated 3D model was established, taking interactions between bolts and segments into consideration. The longitudinal mechanical and deformation pattern of shield tunnel were analyzed. The results showed that the deformation of circumferential joint was composed of joint opening and dislocation, and the dislocation was the main deformation. A longitudinal deformation pattern of tunnel, being divided into three phases, was proposed and the failure modes of bolts were revealed.
Control of the Shield's Vertical Attitude During Shield Tunnelling in Soft Soils

Abstract:It is inevitable for a shield to deviate from the designed route during tunnelling in soft soils, which may result in the concentration of stress in segments, segment cracking and excessive ground settlement. Based on measured data from a shield tunnel of the Hangzhou metro project, this paper analyzes the shield's vertical atti-tude variation in a typical Hangzhou soft-soil layer and gives corresponding control measures. The results show that: 1) it is inevitable for the shield to be tilted with a negative pitch angle during segment erection; 2) during shield driving, an effective way of adjusting the pitch angle is to control the deviation correction moment since the pitch angle is sensitive to deviation correction moment variation; and 3) adjustment of the shield attitude is a dy-namic process, so it needs to be planned in detail and implemented patiently.

Abstract:To explore the load-bearing performance and the failure patterns of the lining structures, a full-scale loading test on the three-ring staggered assembled shield tunnel segments is carried out through a hydraulic loading system. In the experimental study, the segments' internal force, convergence deformation, and displacement, and the bolts' internal force, are analyzed. According to the experimental results, the relationship between internal force and deformation is obtained to determine the residual bearing capacity of the shield tunnel at each stage. Three stages are specified for the evolution of the segment's maximum bending moment during the loading process, in which, the elastic stage is the main and longest stage, in which the bending moment of the segment increases the most. There are two stages for convergence deformation development and segment misalignment development. At the end of loading, the segment's maximum positive and negative convergence values reach 61.22 and- 57.69 mm, respectively. Besides, the maximum segment misalignment is 3.67 mm, which occurs in the direction of 90 degrees. The segment cracks when its maximum convergence value reaches 25.03 mm. Moreover, there are signs of fracturing on the waist joint of the segment when its maximum convergence value reaches 32.73 mm. The concrete at the waist joint starts fracturing in pieces when the segment's maximum convergence value reaches 38.93 mm, which is defined as the type of shear failure. Finally, the bearing capacity of shield tunnels during segment failure period can be evaluated by using the corresponding relationship between deformation and internal force.
Mechanical Analysis of Segment Floating During Shield Tunnel Construction

Abstract:The lining segment is in a complex stress state during shield tunnel construction,which is prone to go dislocation and have wholly rising displacement.Based on the analysis of segment in grouting section and considering static buoyancy and dynamic buoyancy,the buoyancy is respectively analyzed during shield tunnel construction.The mechanical model for segment ring in floating phase and calculation formula are presented,respectively.Aiming at the difference of segment ring between normal design state and floating state,the modified routine method is carried out to calculate lining internal force to draw a comparison.The results show that,comparing with segment ring in the normal design state,the bending moment,shear force and axial force values of segment increase by 60%,51% and 46% in floating state,which indicates that segment floating is adverse to its safety.The stress of segment is affected by dynamic buoyancy greatly during construction stage,which is larger than static buoyancy and must controlled reasonably for preventing the segment fracture.

Abstract:The reinforcement of shield tunnels with secondary linings is a widely used method to enhance the overall rigidity of tunnels; therefore, ensuring tunnel safety during construction and operational periods. According to a new composite curved Euler beam theory, an analytical method will be proposed to analyze a shield tunnel that is reinforced by a secondary lining, in which the radial joints and the interaction between the segmental lining and the surrounding soil will be simulated by a series of concentrated and distributed springs, respectively. In contrast to the radial rigid connection that was assumed in previous studies, radial detachment and tangential slippage between the segmental and secondary linings will be allowed. The solutions for the internal forces and deformations will be derived using the state-space method with arbitrary loads and joint distributions. In addition, the proposed method will be extended to cases with partial reinforcement that have a segment of secondary lining and a reinforcement connected by bolts. The proposed method will be validated using finite element numerical simulations. In addition, the variations in the internal forces and deformation for the soil reaction stiffness under different joint and interfacial stiffnesses will be examined. The results indicate that the internal forces and deformations of the linings decreased with the increase of soil reaction spring stiffness, and the interfacial radial spring stiffness had a more significant influence on the axial force transfer between the linings.

Abstract:Segmental tunnel lining strengthened with steel plates is widely used worldwide to provide a permanent strengthening method. Most existing studies assume an ideal steel-concrete interface, ignoring discontinuous deformation characteristics, making it difficult to accurately analyze the strengthened structure’s failure mechanism. In this study, interfacial fracture mechanics of composite material was applied to the segmental tunnel lining strengthened with steel plates, and a numerical three-dimensional solid nonlinear model of the lining structure was established, combining the extended finite element method with a cohesive-zone model to account for the discontinuous deformation characteristics of the interface. The results accurately describe the crack propagation process, and are verified by full-scale testing. Next, dynamic simulations based on the calibrated model were conducted to analyze the sliding failure and cracking of the steel-concrete interface. Lastly, detailed location of the interface bonding failure are further verified by model test. The results show that, the cracking failure and bond failure of the interface are the decisive factors determining the instability and failure of the strengthened structure. The proposed numerical analysis is a major step forward in revealing the interface failure mechanism of strengthened composite material structures.

Abstract:As one of the major engineering disasters in tunnel structures, segment lining cracks have significant impacts on the carrying capacity and durability of shield tunnels. This study focused on the lining cracking problems that are induced by annular interfacial unevenness during construction; a three-dimensional finite element model of shield tunnel linings was established that uses particular gasket elements and considers the assembly tolerance between segments and dowel pads at the annular interface. Through the numerical simulation, the lining’s structural deformation and crack propagation in the presence of the annular joint’s unevenness were studied by adjusting the initial gap and the normal stiffness modulus of the dowel pad at the annular interface. The numerical results indicate that the cracks induced by the jacking thrust force are initiated in hang holes in the midspan of the segments and subsequently develop along the longitudinal direction. In addition, the critical thrust loads for crack occurrence and the crack length are directly related to the initial gap and the stiffness modulus of the dowel pads at the annular interface of the segments. Moreover, the higher the assembly tolerance and the dowel pad stiffness modulus, the more serious will be the longitudinal cracks. It is confirmed that the use of appropriate dowel pads can effectively control the initiation and development of longitudinal cracks and enhance the structure’s carrying capacity.

Abstract:The retaining structure of a shield tunnel is usually subjected to static loading; however, cyclic loading such as the vibration loading of the train will act on the lining structure year after year that cannot be neglected. Due to the complex manufacturing and assembling process of the lining segment, initial defects in the segment are inevitable. Such defects will propagate under the cyclic loading such as the train vibration, which may cause a large threat to the shield tunnel system. In this paper, a defective shield tunnel lining segment under cyclic loading is studied by both a full-scale experiment and three-dimensional numerical simulations to investigate its fracture properties and failure mechanism and make a rational estimate of its fatigue life. Results show that crack propagation of the defective shield tunnel segment can be identified as several different stages based on its deformation characteristics, and the failure pattern of the segment is determined by its initial defects. The results by the experiment and numerical investigation are in good agreement for each other.

Abstract:The control criteria for structural deformation and the evaluation of operational safety performance for large-diameter shield tunnel segments are not yet clearly defined. To address this issue, a refined 3D finite element model was established to analyze the transverse deformation response of a large-diameter segmental ring. By analyzing the stress, deformation, and crack distribution of large-diameter segments under overload conditions, the transverse deformation of the segmental ring could be divided into four stages. The main reasons for the decrease in segmental ring stiffness were found to be the extensive development of cracks and the complete formation of four plastic hinges. The deformation control value for the large-diameter shield tunnel segment is chosen as 8‰ of the segment's outer diameter, representing the transverse deformation during the formation of the first semi-plastic hinge (i.e., the first yield point) in the structure. This control value can serve as a reinforcement standard for preventing the failure of large-diameter shield tunnel segments. The flexural bearing capacity characteristic curve of segments was used to evaluate the structural strength of a large-diameter segmental ring. It was discovered that the maximum internal force combination of the segment did not exceed the segment ultimate bearing capacity curve (SUBC). However, the combination of internal force at 9°, 85°, and 161° of the joints, and their symmetrical locations about the 0°–180° axis exceeded the joint ultimate bearing capacity curve (JUBC). The results indicate that the failure of the large-diameter segment lining was mainly due to insufficient joint strength, leading to an instability failure. The findings from this study can be used to develop more effective maintenance strategies for large-diameter shield tunnel segments to ensure their long-term performance.

Abstract:To investigate the internal force response characteristics and reinforcement effects of the shield tunnel segment structure in the presence of ground load disturbances in the Hangzhou Metro, full-scale tests were conducted on three-ring misaligned assembled segments using a self-developed "Shield Tunnel Segment Hydraulic Loading System." The study examined the structural characteristics of tunnel segments under the influence of different ground resistance coefficients (λ) and eccentric loads (P), and explored the reinforcement effects of the internal tension ring method from multiple perspectives. The research results indicate that under different ground resistance coefficients (λ), the sensitivity of internal force response is concentrated in the waist concrete, with a maximum bending moment reduction of 88.8%. The effective rate of bending stiffness tends to flatten, joint bending moment transfer effects strengthen, and the bearing capacity of the segments significantly increases after reinforcement, leading to a more uniform overall structural response. Under different eccentric loads (P), the bending moment of the segments after reinforcement approximates central symmetry with a reduced distribution range. The rate of change of the effective bending stiffness (η) shifts from "rapid" to "slow," and the variation of joint bending moment transfer coefficient (ζ) stabilizes. The reinforcement with steel rings significantly enhances the overall stiffness of the segments and reinforces the joint bending moment transfer effect. The reinforcement effect of the segments can be evaluated through the bending moment transfer coefficient and effective bending stiffness. After reinforcement, the bearing capacity of the segments is noticeably enhanced, and significant forces are observed at two locations in the right waist joint, where the combination of steel plates and segments exhibits optimal performance.

Abstract:The lining of a shield tunnel consists of thousands of precast segments that are connected by bolts, resulting in many joints in the shield tunnel structure. The mechanical behaviour of segment joints, which are the most vulnerable part in structures, determine the bearing capacity and deformation characteristic of the overall tunnel structure. Therefore, it is necessary to study the stiffness, bearing capacity and deformation behaviour of joints under different load conditions. However, previous studies have mainly focused on the capacities of longitudinal joints (LJs) against bending moments, and circumferential joints (CJs) against shear forces. Actually, the interaction between segments can be much more complicated, and the joints may suffer other loads, but there have been few relevant studies on this topic. In this study, a series of three-dimensional numerical models were established to investigate the bearing capacity and deformation behaviour of the joints under different kinds of loads. The results showed that when LJs and CJs were subjected to tension or shear forces, the failure was caused by the damage of segment concrete, in other words, the mechanical properties of the concrete determined the ultimate bearing capacity of the joints.

Structural Stress Characteristics and Joint Deformation of Shield Tunnels Crossing Active Faults

Abstract:Fault dislocation severely threatens the safety of a tunnel structure. Formerly, researchers mainly engaged in the mechanical response of mountain tunnels crossing the fault fracture zone. In contrast, few studies have focused on the structural stress characteristics and joint deformation of the cross-fault shield tunnels. There is an apparent difference between segmental tunnels and mountain tunnels with respect to mechanical properties. In the current study, a three-dimensional numerical model of cross-fault segmental tunnels is established based on the theory of concrete plastic damage constitutive relations using the finite element program ABAQUS. The numerical calculation results are compared with the model test results for validation. Subsequently, the relevant factors affecting the mechanical response of the shield tunnel crossing the active fault are analyzed. The results illustrate that when normal fault dislocation occurs, the shield tunnel structure is initially damaged appearing in the circumferential joints, which is prone to large tension deformation. Otherwise, when reverse faulting occurs by the same displacement, the shield tunnel structure is initially damaged at the arch haunch of the segments, and the deformation of the longitudinal joints is relatively slight. Under the same fault displacement, the bearing capacity of the segmental lining subjected to the reverse fault dislocation is more significant than that of the normal fault dislocation. Both the soil elastic modulus and the vertical distance between the top of the fault and the tunnel exert a considerable impact on the structural damage of the segmental tunnels, bolt stress, and joint deformation. The fault dip angle does not affect the mechanical characteristics of the shield tunnel structure when subjected to normal fault displacement. In reverse faulting cases, with the increase of the fault dip angle, the tunnel structural failure mode transforms from the transverse compression failure of the segments to the shear failure of the circumferential joints.

Abstract:<p>Structural performance of shield tunnels is of paramount concern during their long-time service. This work presents a case study describing the structural responses of a shield tunnel caused by unexpected leakage and the corresponding treatment measures. Firstly, the general information of the accident is introduced, and the structural responses of segmental lining are highlighted, e.g., longitudinal differential settlement, horizontal convergence, dislocation among rings, and concrete spalling. On this basis, the influence mechanism of leakage on the structural responses is preliminarily discussed. Finally, the treatment measures are proposed and their effectiveness is evaluated by field application. The research results show that the structural response caused by leakage is mainly differential settlement, but the horizontal deformation is not significant. The differential settlement further causes dislocation among rings and concrete spalling. The maximum settlement of the lower line tunnel and the upper one occurs at the special lining rings where the leakage occurs, and the maximum values are 580.4 mm and 301.3 mm, respectively. There is no dislocation among the special lining rings. However, severe dislocations of about 10 ordinary concrete segmental rings are observed on both sides of the special lining rings. The value of the dislocation increases first and then decreases when approaching closer to the special lining rings. Correspondingly, the concrete around the circumferential joints is also severely spalled. The greater the dislocation, the more severe the concrete spalling. The longitudinal differential settlement and dislocation among rings are effectively controlled by the proposed measures, mainly including polyurethane grouting and bonding steel plates by full-ring and across circumferential joints. The case presented can be used as a reference in similar conditions.</p>

Abstract:Attitude deflection of shield machine is inevitable in process of driving forward, therefore, the tail brush, circular shape retainer and even shell of shield machine will extrude the exterior surfaces of segments. The squeezing action acting on segments causes dislocation, stress concentration and even crack in segments. Finite element code, ADINA, was used to analyze numerical tunnel model of 9 segment rings. The loads acting on different segment rings included squeezing action of tail brush under four attitude deflection, jacking forces, grouting pressure and earth pressure. The aspects of analysis included displacement feature and stress distribution. The analysis results indicate attitude deflection of shield machine causes biggish dislocation between segments, and the key segment is the most affected and weakest part in same ring which causes irregular displacement and dislocation in whole tunnel structure. In general, under squeezing action induced by shield machine, circumferential seam is much more affected than longitudinal seam. The squeezing action causes the segment dislocation exceed the limiting dislocation value which means curved bolt has extruded bolt hole and crack or breakage frequently concentrates in key segment and adjacent segment. Deflection of shield machine attitude is inevitable, but two deflection attitudes, including shield machine attitude deviates right direction and the head of shield machine goes down, should be avoided.

Abstract:The increasing emergence of foundation pit excavations in dense urban areas has caused a series of adverse impacts on operating tunnels. Thus, the investigation of tunnel segment reinforcement is crucial and essential for geotechnical engineers. This article intends to investigate the reinforcement effect of the channel steel reinforcement method through a three-ring full-scale test and finite element simulation. The three-ring full-scale test is carried out by considering different confining pressures under the influence of different tunnel burial depths and different distances between the foundation pit and tunnel (clearance distances). In addition, a three-dimensional refined FEM numerical simulation verified by the full-scale model test is conducted to study the influence of foundation pit retaining structure deformation. The research results show that channel steel reinforcement can significantly improve the stiffness of the segment and its bearing capacity. The effect of the channel steel is more prominent in tunnels with a large burial depth. The stress and deformation of the segment are relatively uniform under the conditions of different clearance distances after the reinforcement of the channel steel. The top and bottom convergence of the segment and the bolt stress increase as the deformation parameters of the envelope structure increase; furthermore, the top and bottom convergence of the segment can be reduced up to 46.88% after the channel steel reinforcement.

Abstract:In this study, a refined numerical model for segmental lining of a shield tunnel, which contains detailed models of reinforcement and connecting bolts, is established using finite element software. The model is first validated by the results from a full-scale model test. Then, based on the load-structure method, this numerical model is adopted to investigate the internal force distribution and the transverse deformation characteristics of the shield tunnel when it is subject to local soil loosening. The influence of loosening position, loosening range, and loosening extent on the mechanical response is extensively studied through comprehensive numerical analyses. The results show that the main influence of local soil loosening on the ring is to disturb the force balance and change the constraint conditions, thus changing the deformation pattern and force state. After the loosening occurs, the bending moment of the ring in the loosening range increases and the axial force decreases. The vertical convergence of the ring is the largest and the equivalent stiffness of the ring is the smallest when the local soil loosened at the haunch and the loosening range α is 90°. The vertical convergence of the ring increases with increasing of the loosening extent, and the equivalent stiffness decreases linearly with increasing of the loosening extent. The results can enhance our understanding of mechanical behaviors of segmental lining associated soil loosening, and will show a possible way for detecting soil loosening based on the measured deformation and internal forces.

Abstract:Shield tunnels that cross soft and hard mutation strata will experience severe longitudinal uneven settlement, which results in local damage to the shield tunnel. Previous studies on the longitudinal mechanical properties of shield tunnels generally assumed that the strata were homogeneous or level-layered and that the lining segment ring was uniform and ignored the shield tunnel’s discontinuity and the inhomogeneity in the strata adjacent to the shield tunnel. Therefore, a three-dimensional (3D) longitudinal refined numerical calculation model of a shield tunnel is developed under complex geological conditions, which realistically considers the effects of a staggered assembly of a shield tunnel, longitudinal and circumferential bolts between segments, and the interface between the strata and tunnel structure. An improved Timoshenko beam theory method that has been validated by a model test in the literature is adopted to verify the numerical calculation model’s reliability and applicability and to highlight its advantages. Then, a study is conducted to analyze the longitudinal mechanical properties of shield tunnels that cross soft and hard mutation strata through this numerical calculation model. The influence law for strata on the longitudinal mechanical properties of the shield tunnel is highlighted by comparisons with another numerical calculation model with simplified strata, which includes the longitudinal uneven settlement and local deformation of the shield tunnel, the opening and dislocation of segment rings, deformation, and yield state of the longitudinal and circumferential bolts. Furthermore, a parametric study is further presented to analyze the influence of the elastic modulus difference between soft and hard strata on the longitudinal mechanical properties of the shield tunnel. An empirical formula is introduced to calculate the maximum opening and dislocation of the segment rings. The longitudinal uneven settlement of the shield tunnel becomes more significant and concentrated as the elastic modulus difference increases, which increases the local deformation and longitudinal internal force in the shield tunnel. Similarly, the deformation and internal force of bolts and the interface increase in the longitudinal direction. Significant differences in the elastic modulus between the soft and hard strata will likely induce severe deformation damage and bolt failure into the shield tunnel.

Reinforcement Effect of U-Steel Reinforced Shield Segment Under Excavation Unloading of Side Foundation Pit

Abstract:The repair and governance of shield tunnels are widely common nowadays. Hence, it is essential to improve the reinforcement system of the tunnel segments. In this study, the deficiencies in the existing U-steel reinforcement are presented, and a finite element study of the cross-section of U-steel reinforced shield tunnel segment is conducted. The MIDAS GTS NX finite element software is employed to establish a fine three-dimensional segment model, and the simulation results are compared with the full-scale test results. In addition, the influencing factors, such as the number of U-steel rings, assembly form, and reinforcement form, are examined to investigate the mechanical deformation performance and reinforcement effect of U-steel reinforced segments under excavation unloading of the side foundation pit. The research results reveal the following:（1） The four-ring U-steel reinforcement minimizes the convergence deformation of segments and reduces the principal stress of bolts.（2） The top-bottom convergence deformation and bolt stress of the segment under the staggered seam assembly form are smaller than those of the through-seam assembly before and after U-steel reinforcement.（3） The maximum principal stress of U-steel is mainly located at the top, waist, and 200°～220° transition section and it can be strengthened locally.（4） The combination reinforcement of U-steel and steel plate is found to be a reliable reinforcement method that has significant reinforcement effect on the convergence deformation of the top and bottom of the segment. The maximum reinforcement efficiency can reach 45.8% with a good economic benefit.
Analysis of Forces and Deformation Rule of Existing Shield Tunnel Caused by Ground-heaped Load

Abstract:Ground-heaped load often leads to complex stresses on existing shield tunnels, which can cause deleterious effects, such as cracking and uneven deformation.The mechanical behavior of shield tunnels caused by ground-heaped load was analyzed to examine the influence of ground load on the force and deformation of shield tunnels and reduce and prevent harm to shield tunnels caused by ground load.The mechanism of ground-heaped load that affect shield tunnels was also explored.The internal forces of lining were calculated with and without ground-heaped load and the results of forces were compared using the modified routine method of lining design theory.Finally, the deformation laws of tunnel were examined based on different magnitudes and locations of ground-heaped load by employing 3D software MIDAS/GTS NS. Results show that ground load can lead to the settlement of the tunnel, wherein the maximum settlement increases linearly with increasing ground load.The settlement of tunnels decreases as the distance between the stacking center and the tunnel center increases, whereas horizontal displacement increases before decreasing.The bending moment, axial force, and shear force increased by 69.34%, 51.90%, and 67.11%, respectively, compared with those measured without ground-heaped load.The conclusions obtained in this study have an important guiding significance for predicting and controlling the force and deformation of shield tunnel caused by ground-heaped load in practical engineering.

Abstract:To explore the internal force and deformation response law of the Hangzhou subway shield pipe structure under engineering perturbations such as overhead loading, a self-developed “shield segment hydraulic loading system” was used to carry out a full-size loading test on a three-ring staggered segment. The influences of the lateral earth pressure coefficient, different loads under symmetric loading, and deviated load distance on the internal force and deformation of the shield tunnel segment are analyzed. Additionally, the transfer coefficient of the pipe sheet moment and the transverse stiffness were analyzed. The results show that the segment deformation and internal force decrease with the increasing lateral earth pressure coefficient. Under symmetric working conditions, the internal force and the deformation of the pipe sheets show different degrees of increase with a continuously increasing pile load above the tunnel. The internal force and deformation of the tubular sheets decrease gradually with increasing deflection distance, and the maximum convergence values of the tubular sheets are centered at 30° and 90°. The distribution of the number of mismatches in the results and the sensitivity to affecting factors differ significantly between the internal force and deformation. The bending stiffness increases with the increasing lateral soil pressure coefficient and pile load but decreases with increasing eccentric pile distance. The moment transfer coefficient has an approximately inverse relationship with the bending stiffness effective rate.
