Abstract:Copper oxide surfaces are commonly used as the catalyst for the CO reduction reaction towards hydrocarbons. However, the lifetime of these catalyst surfaces is limited. In this paper, a method of production of copper oxides through in-liquid plasma is explored, which may be a suitable reactivation method in such applications. The influence of the plasma, ignited in distilled water, with copper and its oxides is monitored in-situ using infrared spectroscopy and ex-situ using SEM and XPS of the samples. It is shown that the interaction of the plasma with the samples causes a reduction of the copper oxide on a fast time scale and an oxidation on a longer time scale. The formation of preferentially oriented copper nanocubes is observed.

Abstract:This study demonstrates that the surface roughness of a copper sample can be controlled by treating it with glow discharge plasma. It is established that the main process affecting the morphology and composition of the surface is oxidation. Treatment causes the formation of various copper oxide nano- and microstructures on the surface of a copper sample. It is shown that, in the parameter range studied, the working gas pressure has a more significant effect on the formation of various structures than the glow discharge current density. As a result of the treatment, various stages of the surface oxidation are observed, caused by differences in the surface temperature.

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) into multicarbon compounds is a promising pathway towards renewable chemicals. Structure-product selectivity studies highlight that copper (100) facets favour C2+ product formation. However, the atomic processes leading to the formation of (100)-rich Cu cubes remains elusive. Herein, we use Cu and graphene-protected Cu surfaces to reveal the differences in structure and composition of common Cu-based electrocatalysts, from nano to micrometer scales. We show that stripping/electrodeposition cycles lead to thermodynamically controlled growth of Cu2O micro/nanocubes, while multi-layered Cu nanocuboids form universally during CO2RR upon polarization-driven re-organization of Cu0 atoms. A synergy of electrochemical characterization by scanning tunnelling microscopy (EC-STM), operando EC-Raman and quasi-operando X-Ray Photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) allows us to shed light on the role of oxygen on the dynamic interfacial processes of Cu, and to demonstrate that chloride is not needed for the stabilization of cubic Cu nanostructures.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser ablation is an essential technology for the fabrication of functional surfaces. However, the ablation quality in femtosecond laser processing is influenced by the excessive energy deposition and the heat accumulation, which results in a low ablated surface quality and even defects on the surface. This study performed femtosecond laser ablation to obtain surfaces with a nanometric finish. Different pulse overlap rates and multiple scanning strategies of the femtosecond laser to machine surfaces with reduction of debris, periodic striped micro-grooves, and micrometric ripples were investigated, which allowed an access to a high-quality surface with a nanometric finish. A mathematical model of femtosecond laser ablation was established to study the formation mechanism of ablated surface characteristics. The effects of the pulse overlap rate and scanning strategy on the generation of debris and microstructures were investigated. Experiments were carried out to verify the method by controlling the pulse overlap rate and scanning strategy of the laser. A femtosecond laser ablated copper workpiece with a surface roughness Sa of 0.056 mu m was achieved.
High-performance Heterogeneous Catalysis with Surface-Exposed Stable Metal Nanoparticles.

Abstract:Protection of metal nanoparticles from agglomeration is critical for their functions and applications. The conventional method for enhancing their stability is to cover them with passivation layers to prevent direct contact. However, the presence of a protective shell blocks exposure of the metal species to reactants, thereby significantly impeding the nanoparticles' utility as catalysts. Here, we report that metal nanoparticles can be prepared and used in a surface-exposed state that renders them inherently catalytically active. This strategy is realised by spatial confinement and electronic stabilisation with a dual-module mesoporous and microporous three-dimensional π-network in which surface-exposed nanoparticles are crystallised upon in situ reduction. The uncovered palladium nanoparticles serve as heterogeneous catalysts that are exceptionally active in water, catalyse unreactive aryl chlorides for straightforward carbon-carbon bond formation and are stable for repeated use in various types of cross couplings. Therefore, our results open new perspectives in developing practical heterogeneous catalysts.
Genetic verification of the role of CCK-AR in pancreatic proliferation and blood glucose and insulin regulation using a congenic rat carrying CCK-AR null allele.

Abstract:A number of studies have indicated that cholecystokinin type A receptor (CCK-AR) plays a crucial role in postnatal pancreatic proliferation and blood glucose regulation through stimulating insulin secretion. The Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rat has been shown to possess poor pancreatic proliferation (PPP) capability after pancreatectomy (Px). Here we have constructed a congenic strain which introgressed an OLETF-derived 18.5 cM genomic fragment identified in our previous quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis as a locus responsible for PPP into normoglycemic F344 genetic background The introgressed region includes CCK-AR null mutation. After Px, the congenic rat showed weak pancreatic proliferation equivalent to that of the OLETF rat. Furthermore, post-surgery non-fasting blood glucose levels for the congenic rats are significantly higher in comparison with the F344 rats. At 28 days after Px, the congenic rats also showed lower blood insulin levels than the F344 rats. These results further provide the genetic evidence that 1) CCK-AR is essential for pancreatic regeneration; 2) impaired pancreatic proliferation mediates the development of hyperglycemia.
Fabrication and Functionalization of Tunable Nanoporous Copper Structures by Hybrid Laser Deposition and Chemical Dealloying

Abstract:Nanoporous metals exhibit promising potentials for engineering applications in catalysis, sensing and bio-detection due to their large surface-to-volume ratios and excellent thermal and electrical conductivity. In this paper, a hybrid laser deposition and chemical dealloying technique is presented for producing tunable nanoporous structures on a substrate, with a particular focus on the etching process behaviour. It was pointed out that the dealloying conditions were crucial to the formation of nanoporosity structures. Nanopore sizes can be tunable from 40 nm-160 nm by controlling the dealloying conditions, such as electrolyte, concentration, time, temperature and alloy components. The nanoporous Cu structures were further functionalized by oxidation. XRD and XPS analyses demonstrated that the formation of Cu2O on the surface of nanoporous copper prohibits the conventional oxidation to form CuO on the surface of the micro or bulk copper. This unique nanostructure exhibits excellent catalysis function for converting CO to CO2 gas; its transition temperature decreases with the smaller nanoporous sizes.

Abstract:Supported metal catalysts play a pivotal role in the production of fuels and chemicals and environmental remediation. However, identification and tailoring of the active metal sites on these catalysts still remain a formidable challenge, primarily due to their dynamic nature in catalytic reactions. Here, we report a simple and effective strategy for tuning supported Cu nanoparticles via controllable in situ surface restructuring to form coordinatively more unsaturated Cu sites, which exhibit a 4-fold increase in catalytic turnover rate and high stability, as probed by the ethanol dehydrogenation reaction. In situ measurements by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveal intense phase transformation and consequent dynamic restructuring of Cu nanoparticles, induced by oxidation with temporarily added nitrous oxide and subsequent reduction under reaction conditions. Such restructuring is precisely controlled at the Cu surfaces without altering Cu dispersion, oxidation state, etc., enabling us to unambiguously identify the active sites during catalysis. This strategy, an alternative to many sophisticated synthesis methods, has been shown to be effective for engineering different Cu catalysts and in turn markedly enhancing their catalytic activity for a wide range of reactions varying from alcohol dehydrogenation to methanol steam reforming.

Abstract:The heterogeneous catalysis on CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) via thermal route is a promising approach for converting waste chemicals and heat into synthetic fuels. For optimum functionality of transition-metal-based nanocatalysts (NC)s, herein, trimetallic NC comprising multiple metal-to-metal oxide interfaces between Cu/CuOx-Ni/NiOx-Pd in subnanometer-sized domains is fabricated on carbon nanotube (CNT) support via proper control on surface chemisorption and subsequent reduction of metal ions (denoted as CNP). Furthermore, to delve more deeply into the CO2RR performance, as-prepared CNP NC is subjected to submillisecond pulsed laser annealing with different per pulse energies (1 mJ and 10 mJ) and a fixed duration of 10 s for manipulating the local atomic arrangement on the surface as well as subsurface regions. In the quasi-balance between the photon annealing and thermal quenching kinetics, the long-range ordered metastable phases of Ni–Pd and Cu–Pd alloys are formed after laser treatment. For the optimum condition (10 mJ per pulse energy input), the production yield and selectivity of CO for the CNP NC in the ambient of CO2 and H2 mixture (H2/CO2 = 3.0) are respectively improved by 27% and 22.4% at 573 K. These results demonstrate the capability for developing the heterogeneous NCs with local and long-range ordered structures for high CO selectivity in CO2RR by using submillisecond pulsed laser annealing that is a quantum leap in reducing the energy input and cost for commercial and environmental benefits.

Abstract:In the manufacturing industry, surface structures and surface topographies present at functional areas of the mechanical parts play a vital role in various performance characteristics, such as corrosion resistance, weldability, and wear behaviors, etc. Copper–zinc alloys are extensively used in the manufacturing industry. Laser ablation has the potential to create a variety of surface structures on the ablated substrate. The size and geometry of such structures largely depend on the selection of process parameters and the ablation environment. In the present study, a copper–zinc alloy (95% Cu and 5% Zn) has been laser ablated under different gaseous and magnetic environments to realize a variety of micro-structuring at the ablation surfaces. The effect of plasma plume pressure on the geometry of the structures is deeply investigated through optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). By analytically evaluating thermal beta (βt), directional beta (βd), and containment radii (Rs) for the plasma of the Cu–Zinc alloy, the validity of magnetic confinement has been proven. In general, five types of microstructures are produced: micro-sized spherical cones, mounted ablated networks, cavities, pores, ridges, and ablation channels with uplifted cones. Moreover, it has been found that, under a magnetic environment, the geometry of the structures is distinct and well-defined compared to those structures achieved when the ablation is carried out without applying a magnetic field.

Abstract:With regard to the development of single atom catalysts (SACs), non-noble metal-organic layers combine a large functional variability with cost efficiency. Here, we characterize reacted layers of melamine and melem molecules on a Cu(111) surface by noncontact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ab initio simulations. Upon deposition on the substrate and subsequent heat treatments in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV), these precursors undergo a stepwise dehydrogenation. After full dehydrogenation of the amino groups, the molecular units lie flat and are strongly chemisorbed on the copper substrate. We observe a particularly extreme interaction of the dehydrogenated nitrogen atoms with single copper atoms located at intermolecular sites. In agreement with the nc-AFM measurements performed with an O-terminated copper tip on these triazine- and heptazine-based copper nitride structures, our ab initio simulations confirm a pronounced interaction of oxygen species at these N-Cu-N sites. To investigate the related functional properties of our samples regarding the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), we developed an electrochemical setup for cyclic voltammetry experiments performed at ambient pressure within a drop of electrolyte in a controlled O2 or N2 environment. Both copper nitride structures show a robust activity in irreversibly catalyzing the reduction of oxygen. The activity is assigned to the intermolecular N-Cu-N sites of the triazine- and heptazine-based copper nitrides or corresponding oxygenated versions (N-CuO-N, N-CuO2-N). By combining nc-AFM characterization on the atomic scale with a direct electrochemical proof of performance, our work provides fundamental insights about active sites in a technologically highly relevant reaction.
Metal-organic Layers Induce in Situ Nano-Structuring of Cu Surface in Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Abstract:Cu-based catalysts have attracted widespread attention for its capability in electrocatalytically reducing CO2 to a variety of products. Surface modification of Cu has become an interesting method for tuning the catalytic performance. Here, we use Zr-based metal-organic layers (MOLs) as the additive of the Cu surface, which enhanced the Faradaic efficiency of CH4 by two times as compared to the untreated polycrystalline Cu foil. Unexpectedly, the MOLs were found to induce in situ nano-structuring of the Cu foil surface within seconds in the electrolysis, as revealed by a combination of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), grazing incidence X-ray diffractometry (GIXRD), and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) measurements. These surface changes are responsible for the shift of product selectivity. Control experiments suggest that negatively charged μ3-O− on the Zr-cluster in the MOL might interact with CO-covered Cu surface and induce roughing and nano-structuring. This work reveals a potential role of additive on Cu to induce surface nano-structuring that tunes catalytic activity and selectivity.
Surface restructuring in AgCu single-atom alloy catalyst and self-enhanced selectivity toward CO2 reduction

Abstract:Single atom alloy catalysts, consisting of trace amount of isolated solute atoms alloyed into the host matrix, provide a promising approach to tune the electronic structure and performance of bimetallic catalysts for breaking the limits of scaling relationships based on the unique electronic structures. However, the precisely as-synthesized surface usually suffers from surface evolution leading to activity and durability decay. Herein, the understanding of surface restructuring under reaction conditions is of great importance in optimizing catalytic performance of bimetallic catalysts. In this work, on account of the surface evolution of Cu in electrochemical reactions and its limited miscibility in Ag, a nanoporous AgCu single atom alloy catalyst with atomic ratio Cu:Ag = 1:110 is fabricated by chemical dealloying process. And a CO2-reduction-induced surface restructuring is achieved upon the well-designed catalyst. Noteworthily, nanoporous AgCu exhibits self-reinforcing selectivity toward CO2 reduction and suppressed hydrogen evolution in parallel with migration of Cu to the surface, although the charge transfer from Ag to Cu results in a strong tendency toward hydrogen evolution at the initial catalytic stage. By combining in situ electrochemical hypersensitive response to surface state with ex situ characterizations, the surface reconstruction is verified to be driven by electrochemical reduction of CO2 rather than hydrogen evolution reaction, and can be modulated by the applied potential. Well-reconstructed nanoporous AgCu facilitates the adsorption of CO2. Electronic effect of the restructuring of Cu enhances CO desorption ability on the surface. Consequently, electronic and geometric effects synergically lead to excellent performances with CO Faradaic efficiency of 97.5%. The insights gained from the reconstruction-induced self-reinforcing behavior of bimetallic electrocatalyst shall offer an avenue to rationally design bimetallic electrocatalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction.

Abstract:The invention of pulsed laser‐induced chemical solid‐phase deposition (LCSD) has enabled the creation of high‐density atomic metal layers on 2D materials, enhancing catalytic device development and revolutionizing electrocatalysis for sustainable energy solutions and environmental preservation, particularly in the context of water splitting. The formation of high‐density atomic metal layers on 2D materials enhances catalytic device development by providing a large surface area, precise control over active sites, and enhanced reactivity. Here, pulsed laser‐induced chemical solid‐phase deposition (LCSD) is introduced for achieving high‐density atomic metal layers. By leveraging high‐density plasma generated via pulsed nanosecond laser irradiation of thin salt layers on 2D materials, atomic‐scale metals are deposited onto abundant nucleation sites, creating dense atomic‐metal layers. This study engineers layered double hydroxide (LDH) materials layered with atomic platinum‐based alloys, exhibiting exceptional catalytic activity for overall water splitting. LDH's excellent oxygen evolution performance combined with remarkable advances in hydrogen evolution catalysis are achieved. Introducing a second element improves Pt layer dispersion and uniformity, resulting in extraordinary Pt distribution density and minimal overpotential. The LDH and Pt‐metal combination creates powerful synergistic effects, significantly enhancing catalytic performance and enabling superior bifunctional catalysts for water splitting. LCSD effectively fabricates stable nanocomposites designed for electrocatalytic applications, leveraging unique structures of atom‐scale metal‐supported composite 2D materials, enhancing overall electrocatalytic performance. This breakthrough impacts energy conversion and environmental protection, broadening electrocatalysis and revolutionizing atom‐scale metal‐supported composite 2D materials. Its practical applications span various areas, contributing to sustainable energy solutions and environmental preservation.

Abstract:The simultaneous generation of nanostructures and redeposited nanoparticles on copper surfaces through their direct ablation in air by a high power and high repetition rate ps laser was demonstrated. Basic and detailed analysis on the formation and the size distribution of nanoparticles spreading over the nanostructured copper surfaces was performed. Lower scanning speed causes more laser pulse input onto the target surface, resulting in a more dense distribution of the nanoparticles with a nearly constant mean radius. The changes in the particle distribution render the copper surfaces to unique reflection spectra responses and surface colors, which are independent of the viewing angles. The present research can pave the way for the practical applications of ps laser in generating nanoparticles on metal surfaces and tailoring their optical properties.
Laser‐Ironing Induced Capping Layer on Co‐Zif‐L Promoting In‐Situ Surface Modification to High‐spin Oxide‐Carbon Hybrids on the "Real Catalyst" for High Oer Activity and Stability

Abstract:Enhancing electrocatalytic performance through structural and compositional engineering has attracted considerable attention. However, most materials only function as pre‐catalysts, and convert into "real catalysts" during electrochemical reactions. Such transition involves dramatic structural and compositional changes and disrupts their designed properties. Herein, we developed for the first time a laser‐ironing (LI) approach capable of in‐situ forming a laser‐ironing capping layer (LICL) on the Co‐ZIF‐L flakes. During the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process, the LICL sustains the leaf‐like morphology and promotes the formation of OER‐active Co3O4 nanoclusters with the highest activity and stability. In contrast, the pristine and conventional heat‐treated Co‐ZIF‐L both collapse and transform to less active CoOOH. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations pinpoint the importance of the high spin (HS) states of Co ions and the narrowed band gap in Co3O4 nanoclusters. They enhance the OER activity by promoting spin‐selected electron transport, effectively lowering the energy barrier, and realizing a spontaneous O2‐releasing step that is the potential determining step in CoOOH. This study presents an innovative approach for modulating both structural and compositional evolutions of electrocatalysts during the reaction, sustaining stability with high performance during dynamic electrochemical reactions, and providing new pathways for facile and high‐precision surface microstructure control. A MnxCu1-x powder mixture was laser deposited on steel substrates to obtain layers with exact composition by laser processing optimization and original power composition optimization. These layers were then dealloyed in electrolyte by both free corrosion and electrochemical etching of manganese component. Bicontinuous porous copper layer with porosity in size of about 700 nm was formed after electrochemical etching, while no porous copper layer could be obtained in free corrosion. Dilute ratio, chemical composition and microstructure of the alloy layers were investigated using SEM, X-EDS and XRD. The results indicate that porous copper layer could be obtained by integrating laser deposition with low dilute ratio and electrochemical dealloying.
CuO: Synthesis in a Highly Excited Oxygen-Copper Plasma and Decoration of ZnO Nanorods for Enhanced Photocatalysis

Abstract:Semiconductor-based heterogeneous photocatalysis has received much attention. A plasma-assisted method for synthesizing CuO was developed and used to decorate ZnO nanorods. High quality monoclinic CuO was synthesized in a highly excited oxygen-copper plasma generated by electron cyclotron resonance microwave discharge of O-2 gas and pulsed laser ablation of a Cu target. The plasma and the CuO synthesis process were spectroscopically characterized by optical emission measurement. In the oxygen-copper plasma, surface decoration of hydrothermally grown ZnO nanorods with CuO was achieved. The CuO-decorated ZnO nanorods were systematically characterized for morphology, structure, photoexcitation, and light emission by field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman scattering spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, light absorption, and photoluminescence measurements. Using the prepared samples as photocatalysts, degradation of organic rhodamine B dye was performed under ultraviolet or violet light illumination, showing that the CuO-decorated ZnO nanorods exhibit much higher photocatalytic activity than pure CuO films and bare ZnO nanorods. A Z-scheme electron transfer mechanism was proposed for the enhanced photocatalytic activity of nanostructured ZnO/CuO heterogeneous composites.
Self-Formation of Compositionally Complex Surface Oxides on High Entropy Alloys Observed by Accelerated Atom Probe Tomography: A Route to Sustainable Catalysts

Abstract:Sustainable catalysts rely on abundant elements which are prone to oxidation. A route to non-noble electrocata-lysts is opened by directing the formation of unavoidable surface oxides towards creating a few atomic layers of an active and stable electrocatalyst, which is in direct contact with its metallic, conducting support. This is ena-bled by combining possibilities of compositionally complex solid solutions with accelerated atomic-scale sur-face characterization. Surface composition changes from the as-synthesized state to states after exposure to the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are investigated using a Cantor-alloy-catalyst-coated tip array for atom probe tomography (APT): the film on top of the tip forms a nanoreactor which enables acquisition of intrinsic proper-ties. The as-deposited film has an around 3 nm thick native oxide; short and prolonged OER exposures result in an oxygen-influenced surface layer with lower oxidation depth and altered metal composition. This shows that as-synthesized complex compositions can be used to obtain active and stable surface oxides under electrochemi-cal load, while their surface evolution is observed by accelerated APT.
