Abstract:Background: This study looks at the clinical applications of nanotechnology in dentistry, with an emphasis on implantology, preventive care, orthodontics, restorative dentistry, and endodontics. Methods: Following PRISMA criteria and registered in PROSPERO (ID: CRD 564245), a PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science search was conducted for studies from January 2014 to April 2024. The criteria were English-language research on nanotechnology in dental coatings, with a focus on clinical trials and observational studies. The electronic database search yielded 8881 publications. Following the screening process, 17 records were selected for qualitative analysis. Results: Nanotechnology has revolutionized dentistry. In orthodontics, nanoparticles improve antibacterial characteristics, durability, and biocompatibility, lowering bacterial colonization and plaque. In preventative care, Casein Phosphopeptide-Amorphous Calcium Phosphate (CPP-ACP) combined with stannous fluoride (SnF2) and nano-sized sodium trimetaphosphate (TMPnano) substantially remineralizes enamel. Nanostructured surfaces in dental implants, particularly those containing calcium, improve osseointegration and stability. Nanoparticles in restorative dentistry improve composite and adhesive strength, aesthetics, and longevity. Conclusions: Nanotechnology improves dental materials and equipment, resulting in better treatment outcomes and increased patient comfort. Its integration provides more effective treatments, which improves dental care and patient outcomes. More research is needed to overcome present problems and expand nanotechnology's medicinal applications.

Abstract:Recent years have seen significant advancements in the field of materials science, accompanied by progress in analytical techniques and the discovery of new control devices and materials. These advancements have paved the way for the development of innovative approaches for raw material selection, with particular attention to creating advanced materials with specific physical and chemical properties tailored to meet desired criteria. This growing demand is particularly pronounced in environments with complex conditions, such as biological environments like the oral cavity. Consequently, there is a pressing need to identify and design materials that meet rigorous standards capable of withstanding such demanding environments. In the search for materials suitable for these applications, the need for advanced additives or biomaterials arises, which not only possess specific physicochemical attributes but also emulate biological materials, such as teeth, once integrated into biological systems. These biomaterials, spanning a wide range from metals, alloys, and polymers to glasses (bioglass), carbon fiber composites, and biological materials, interface with biological systems such as tissues and human fluids. However, it is essential to emphasize that biomaterials, while in contact with biological entities, differ from pharmaceutical materials.

Abstract:Dental caries remains a significant oral health problem affecting children worldwide. Restoring carious lesions in the pediatric dentition requires materials and techniques that are effective, efficient, esthetic, and minimally invasive. This review provides an overview of the latest trends in pediatric restorative dentistry, focusing on restorative materials, esthetic crowns, biological restorations, prosthetic rehabilitation, and alternative techniques for improving esthetics. Advancements in glass ionomer cements, composite resins, and nanofilled composites have improved physical properties and esthetics. Esthetic crowns like zirconia, cerec, and preveneered stainless steel offer durable and natural-looking solutions. Biological restorations (fragment reattachment, natural tooth pontics) and prosthetic techniques (modified appliances, fiber-reinforced space maintainers) enable conservative approaches. Alternative techniques such as bleaching, veneers, lasers, and cosmetic contouring further enhance esthetics. As the field continues evolving, future research should focus on developing biocompatible, minimally invasive, and long-lasting materials and techniques that improve patient compliance and satisfaction while addressing the unique challenges of treating pediatric patients.

Abstract:3D printing and digital manufacturing technologies have been largely used in dentistry in recent years and dentists and prosthetic technician are up to date and involved in the subject, following the advancement of technology. The objective of the present manuscript was to carry out a descriptive literature review, covering the processing methods, precision, types of materials used and the applications of 3D printing in dentistry. A bibliographic search was conducted in the PUBMED database (www.pubmed.gov), in which studies published from 2000 to 2020 were collected. Laboratory studies, case reports, systematic and literature reviews were included. Therefore, articles that did not address the topic in question, letters to the editor, opinion articles, duplicate literature and texts that were not in English were excluded. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 75 research articles were selected. In dentistry the most common methods of 3D printing used are: stereolithography (SLA), material jetting (MJ), binder jetting, and Laser sintering. It is important to carefully consider the limitation of each method, material and operator’s skills in 3D printing for this technology to be more affordable in dentistry. Despite that, the accuracy of printing methods and materials used in different dental applications with 3D printing have been improving each day more, allowing a digital workflow with greater applicability and frequency of use in dentistry.

Abstract:Advances in periodontal science and practice over the last decade have radically changed the understanding of periodontal diseases and have opened new, exciting prospects for both medical and surgical therapy of periodontal diseases. Establishment of the aetiology and pathogenesis of periodontitis, understanding of the unique genetic and environmental susceptibility profile of affected subjects, and recognition of the systemic implications of periodontal infections are the key research findings. The use of randomised, controlled, clinical trials has allowed the development of evidence-based periodontology. Adjunctive antimicrobial therapy, regenerative periodontal surgery, periodontal plastic surgery, bone regeneration surgery in the light of implant treatment, and advanced soft tissue management at implant sites have radically changed practice.

Abstract:As computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technologies have matured, three-dimensional (3D) printing materials suitable for dentistry have attracted considerable research interest, owing to their high efficiency and low cost for clinical treatment. Three-dimensional printing technology, also known as additive manufacturing, has developed rapidly over the last forty years, with gradual application in various fields from industry to dental sciences. Four-dimensional (4D) printing, defined as the fabrication of complex spontaneous structures that change over time in response to external stimuli in expected ways, includes the increasingly popular bioprinting. Existing 3D printing materials have varied characteristics and scopes of application; therefore, categorization is required. This review aims to classify, summarize, and discuss dental materials for 3D printing and 4D printing from a clinical perspective. Based on these, this review describes four major materials, i.e., polymers, metals, ceramics, and biomaterials. The manufacturing process of 3D printing and 4D printing materials, their characteristics, applicable printing technologies, and clinical application scope are described in detail. Furthermore, the development of composite materials for 3D printing is the main focus of future research, as combining multiple materials can improve the materials' properties. Updates in material sciences play important roles in dentistry; hence, the emergence of newer materials are expected to promote further innovations in dentistry.

Abstract:Objectives Dental caries is one of the most prevalent bacteria-induced non-communicable diseases globally. It is known to be the top oral health burden in both developing and developed nations. There is substantial literature on the disease process and there is still debate on the extent of caries removal needed and the adequacy of the materials available to restore the lost tooth structure. The current review discusses the disease process together with the contemporary management of the carious lesion and also presents substantial evidence on novel materials and techniques that make minimally invasive dentistry predictable. Methods The written work presented shows the most relevant literature for the management of dental caries focusing on novel materials used in minimally invasive dentistry. Results There is still much to learn about specific antimicrobial and caries prevention mechanisms of novel materials. Materials that respond to a single or a few stimuli remain "weakly intelligent" in the face of the complex microenvironment in the oral cavity. Engineered systems that combine artificial intelligence and chemical engineering, are expected to possess higher intelligence, self-healing capabilities as well as environmental adaptability, and may be future promising research directions. Significance The targeted approach in managing dental caries will hopefully have a better clinical outcome. The strategies discussed are alternatives to the contemporary approach and will improve the clinical management.
