Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing dentistry by enhancing the analysis of complex medical imaging data, automating the identification of anatomical landmarks, and improving diagnostic accuracy and treatment planning, etc. When combined with three-dimensional (3D) --bioprinting, AI significantly optimizes the design and manufacturing processes, leading to highly precise and functional 3D-printed dental devices. AI-driven 3D bioprinting represents a transformative leap beyond traditional prosthetics, with the potential to create living tissues capable of regenerating oral structures. This technology pushes the boundaries of dental care by facilitating the development of biocompatible materials and complex tissue constructs that seamlessly integrate with interdisciplinary research, spanning advanced materials, future manufacturing techniques, and innovative clinical methodologies. This review examines the cutting-edge advancements in AI-assisted 3D bioprinting, focusing on its roles in tissue engineering, regenerative dentistry, and personalized treatment planning. Abstract:The newer innovations play an important role in the earlier diagnosis of dental caries based on near-infrared transillumination imaging such as Diagnocam and Soprocare intraoral digital cameras, which aid in the diagnosis of dental caries and also differentiate old and newer dental plaques, respectively. Nanoparticles used as carriers for effective and targeted drug therapies in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and candidiasis among chronic denture wearers provided better-increased bioavailability than oral formulations. Artificial intelligence (AI) uses machines to simulate intelligent human behavior. Augmented reality has been presented as a cognitive extension of AI in health care, emphasizing the auxiliary and supplemental roles of dental and medical practitioners. The article enlightens readers with newer diagnostic methods in dentistry and medicine and innovations such as Surface Topography-Assisted Robotic Superstructures (STARS), Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen Ligand Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PSMA-PETCT), toothbrushes with augmented reality, new hydrogel-based electrodes for Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) applications, and robotics in dentistry.

Abstract:Change in our world is happening quickly. For dentistry, this is no exception, and now is the time to foster new opportunities. Advances in the foundational science of dental, oral, and craniofacial health are expanding and enabling personalized care built on strong discoveries in the fields of microbiology, immunology, and neuroscience. Digital communication through electronic health records, patient portals, and teledentistry is emerging as vital new armamentarium for contemporary dental practice. Wearables linked with smartphone apps are trending to monitor pain levels, postoperative symptoms, wound healing, and home oral health habits. Oral fluid diagnostics are rapidly surfacing for use in diagnostics, drug testing, and hormone detection. Manipulation of the oral microbiome is under investigation for caries management and for potential impact on systemic conditions. Resolving mediators of inflammation are promising for addressing the chronic inflammation that plagues periodontal patients. New imaging modalities paired with digital approaches and 3-dimensional printing are formulating disruptions in the technical aspects of dentistry. Augmented reality and virtual reality are providing great potential as teaching tools for dental students and bear promise for lifelong learning for providers. Optimization of information technology and the incorporation of data science partnered with artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve patient care in a learning health care system approach will benefit large numbers of patients. These are exciting times for our profession, yet we need to navigate these paths carefully. Technology needs to significantly and positively change the experience of those involved (patients, dentists, staff, payors). New technologies need to be backed with solid research and implementation science. Automation should focus on improving care with attention to expanding care to the underserved and not lose the critical human connection that our patients need. There is great potential in the emerging innovations yet also great responsibility to ensure they are evidence based on rigorous science and deployable with equity and sensitivity. Knowledge Transfer Statement: This article discusses innovations in technology and treatments that have enormous potential to revolutionize our dental care, including novel concepts in electronic health records, communication between dentists and patients, biologics around diagnosis and treatment, digital dentistry, and, finally, the real-time optimization of information technology. Digital technology has emerged as a transformative tool in dental implantation, profoundly enhancing accuracy and effectiveness across multiple facets, such as diagnosis, preoperative treatment planning, surgical procedures, and restoration delivery. The multiple integration of radiographic data and intraoral data, sometimes with facial scan data or electronic facebow through virtual planning software, enables comprehensive 3-dimensional visualization of the hard and soft tissue and the position of future restoration, resulting in heightened diagnostic precision. In virtual surgery design, the incorporation of both prosthetic arrangement and individual anatomical details enables the virtual execution of critical procedures (e.g., implant placement, extended applications, etc.) through analysis of cross-sectional images and the reconstruction of 3-dimensional surface models. After verification, the utilization of digital technology including templates, navigation, combined techniques, and implant robots achieved seamless transfer of the virtual treatment plan to the actual surgical sites, ultimately leading to enhanced surgical outcomes with highly improved accuracy. In restoration delivery, digital techniques for impression, shade matching, and prosthesis fabrication have advanced, enabling seamless digital data conversion and efficient communication among clinicians and technicians. Compared with clinical medicine, artificial intelligence (AI) technology in dental implantology primarily focuses on diagnosis and prediction. AI-supported preoperative planning and surgery remain in developmental phases, impeded by the complexity of clinical cases and ethical considerations, thereby constraining widespread adoption.

Abstract:Background: Advances in digital radiography for both intraoral and panoramic imaging and cone-beam computed tomography have led the way to an increase in diagnostic capabilities for the dental care profession. In this article, the authors provide information on 4 emerging technologies with promise. Types of studies reviewed: The authors feature the following: artificial intelligence in the form of deep learning using convolutional neural networks, dental magnetic resonance imaging, stationary intraoral tomosynthesis, and second-generation cone-beam computed tomography sources based on carbon nanotube technology and multispectral imaging. The authors review and summarize articles featuring these technologies. Results: The history and background of these emerging technologies are previewed along with their development and potential impact on the practice of dental diagnostic imaging. The authors conclude that these emerging technologies have the potential to have a substantial influence on the practice of dentistry as these systems mature. The degree of influence most likely will vary, with artificial intelligence being the most influential of the 4. Conclusions and practical implications: The readers are informed about these emerging technologies and the potential effects on their practice going forward, giving them information on which to base decisions on adopting 1 or more of these technologies. The 4 technologies reviewed in this article have the potential to improve imaging diagnostics in dentistry thereby leading to better patient care and heightened professional satisfaction.

Current Medical Imaging Formerly Current Medical Imaging Reviews

Abstract:Background: The cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) technology has continuously evolved since its appearance in oral medicine in the early 2000s. Objective: To present recent advances in CBCT in oral medicine: i) selection of recent and consensual evidence-based sources, ii) structured summary of the information based on an iterative framework and iii) compliance with ethical, public health and patient-centered concerns. Main Findings: We will focus on technological advances, such as sensors and reconstruction algorithms used to improve the constant quality of the image and dosimetry. CBCT examination is now performed in almost all disciplines of oral medicine: currently, the main clinical disciplines that use CBCT acquisitions are endodontics and oral surgery, with clearly defined indications. Periodontology and ear, nose and throat medicine are more recent fields of application. For a given application and indication, the smallest possible field of view must be used. One of the major challenges in contemporary healthcare is ensuring that technological developments do not take precedence over admitted standards of care. The entire volume should be reviewed in full, with a systematic approach. All findings are noted in the patient’s record and explained to the patient, including incidental findings. This presupposes the person reviewing the images is sufficiently trained to interpret such images, inform the patient and organize the clinical pathway, with referrals to other medical or oral medicine specialties as needed. Conclusion: A close collaboration between dentists, medical physicists, radiologists, radiographers and engineers is critical for all aspects of CBCT technology.

Abstract:Journal of Dental Research, Ahead of Print. Intraoral scanners (IOSs) have emerged as a cornerstone technology in digital dentistry. This article examines the recent advancements and multifaceted applications of IOSs, highlighting their benefits in patient care and addressing their current limitations. The IOS market has seen a competitive surge. Modern IOSs, featuring continuous image capture and advanced software for seamless image stitching, have made the scanning process more efficient. Patient comfort with IOS procedures is favorable, mitigating the discomfort associated with conventional impression taking. There has been a shift toward open data interfaces, notably enhancing interoperability. However, the integration of IOSs into large dental institutions is slow, facing challenges such as compatibility with existing health record systems and extensive data storage management. IOSs now extend beyond their use in computer-aided design and manufacturing, with software solutions transforming them into platforms for diagnostics, patient communication, and treatment planning. Several IOSs are equipped with tools for caries detection, employing fluorescence technologies or near-infrared imaging to identify carious lesions. IOSs facilitate quantitative monitoring of tooth wear and soft-tissue dimensions. For precise tooth segmentation in intraoral scans, essential for orthodontic applications, developers are leveraging innovative deep neural network–based approaches. The clinical performance of restorations fabricated based on intraoral scans has proven to be comparable to those obtained using conventional impressions, substantiating the reliability of IOSs in restorative dentistry. In oral and maxillofacial surgery, IOSs enhance airway safety during impression taking and aid in treating conditions such as cleft lip and palate, among other congenital craniofacial disorders, across diverse age groups. While IOSs have improved various aspects of dental care, ongoing enhancements in usability, diagnostic accuracy, and image segmentation are crucial to exploit the potential of this technology in optimizing patient care.

Abstract:Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) has probably been one of the most revolutionary innovations in the field of dentistry in the past decade and it provides a novel platform for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. Current imaging techniques are essentially two-dimensional (2D) representations of threedimensional (3D) objects and suffer from several limitations. Hence, fulfillment of ideal imaging goals has been limited. Twodimensional radiographs are insufficient, especially in complex cases like impacted teeth, supernumerary teeth and orthognathic surgeries. CBCT images provide far more detailed information than conventional 2D radiographs and are user friendly. Soft tissues, skull, airway and the dentition can be observed and measured on CBCT images in a 1:1 ratio. Clinical significance: CBCT provides an excellent tool for accurate diagnosis, more predictable treatment planning, more efficient patient management and education, improved treatment outcome and patient satisfaction. This article focuses on various applications of cone beam CT technology in orthodontics.

Abstract:Without a doubt, dentistry is quickly modernizing and transitioning to digital technology. In the past, taking dental impression, making dental models, and assembling dental laboratory prostheses took a lot of time. However, the advent of the intraoral scanner, digital radiography, computer-aided design (CAD)/computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), 3D printers, and artificial intelligence (AI) software revolutionized the field of dentistry as we know it today.[1] [2] [3] Precision and accuracy are two of digital dentistry's key benefits. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and digital radiography are two examples of digital imaging technologies that enable dentists to get extremely precise and detailed pictures of the teeth and surrounding tissues.[3] The utilization of these data allows for very precise and predictable treatment planning and execution. The effectiveness and quickness with which dental restorations may be made is another advantage of digital dentistry. With the use of CAD/CAM technology, dental restorations may be designed and created in a single session, doing away with the need for further visits and interim restorations.[4] Increased precision and accuracy, quicker production times, and more personalization options are all benefits of digital dentures. They also eliminate the requirement for traditional impression materials, which some patients could find painful.[5] Due to their reduced waste generation and resource usage, digital dentures may also be more ecologically friendly than conventional ones. Abstract:Artificial intelligence has been widely used in the field of dentistry in recent years. The present study highlights current advances and limitations in integrating artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning in subfields of dentistry including periodontology, endodontics, orthodontics, restorative dentistry, and oral pathology. This article aims to provide a systematic review of current clinical applications of artificial intelligence within different fields of dentistry. The preferred reporting items for systematic reviews (PRISMA) statement was used as a formal guideline for data collection. Data was obtained from research studies for 2009–2022. The analysis included a total of 55 papers from Google Scholar, IEEE, PubMed, and Scopus databases. Results show that artificial intelligence has the potential to improve dental care, disease diagnosis and prognosis, treatment planning, and risk assessment. Finally, this study highlights the limitations of the analyzed studies and provides future directions to improve dental care.

It discusses current and future applications of digital dentistry, such as AI, AR, and teledentistry. The potential benefits and challenges associated with these applications are also examined, including their impact on patient privacy, dental education, and the overall practice of dentistry and oral surgery. Indeed, digital dentistry has transformed the way we diagnose, plan, and treat our patients. In other words, the use of digital technologies in dentistry has allowed for greater precision, accuracy, and efficiency, while also improving patient outcomes. Abstract:Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a popular imaging modality in dentistry for diagnosing and planning treatment for a variety of oral diseases with the ability to produce detailed, three-dimensional images of the teeth, jawbones, and surrounding structures. CBCT imaging has emerged as an essential diagnostic tool in dentistry. CBCT imaging has seen significant improvements in terms of its diagnostic value, as well as its accuracy and efficiency, with the most recent development of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. This paper reviews recent AI trends and practices in dental CBCT imaging. AI has been used for lesion detection, malocclusion classification, measurement of buccal bone thickness, and classification and segmentation of teeth, alveolar bones, mandibles, landmarks, contours, and pharyngeal airways using CBCT images. Mainly machine learning algorithms, deep learning algorithms, and super-resolution techniques are used for these tasks. This review focuses on the potential of AI techniques to transform CBCT imaging in dentistry, which would improve both diagnosis and treatment planning. Finally, we discuss the challenges and limitations of artificial intelligence in dentistry and CBCT imaging.

Abstract:Since the beginning of recorded history, the human brain has been one of the most intriguing structures for scientists and engineers. Over the centuries, newer technologies have been developed based on principles that seek to mimic their functioning, but the creation of a machine that can think and behave like a human remains an unattainable fantasy. This idea is now known as "artificial intelligence". Dentistry has begun to experience the effects of artificial intelligence (AI). These include image enhancement for radiology, which improves the visibility of dental structures and facilitates disease diagnosis. AI has also been utilized for the identification of periapical lesions and root anatomy in endodontics, as well as for the diagnosis of periodontitis. This review is intended to provide a comprehensive overview of the use of AI in modern dentistry's numerous specialties. The relevant publications published between March 1987 and July 2023 were identified through an exhaustive search. Studies published in English were selected and included data regarding AI applications among various dental specialties. Dental practice involves more than just disease diagnosis, including correlation with clinical findings and administering treatment to patients. AI cannot replace dentists. However, a comprehensive understanding of AI concepts and techniques will be advantageous in the future. AI models for dental applications are currently being developed.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly prevalent in biomedical and industrial development, capturing the interest of dental professionals and patients. Its potential to improve the accuracy and speed of dental procedures is set to revolutionize dental care. The use of AI in computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) within the restorative dental and material science fields offers numerous benefits, providing a new dimension to these practices. This study aims to provide a concise overview of the implementation of AI-powered technologies in CAD/CAM restorative dental procedures and materials. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using keywords from 2000 to 2023 to obtain pertinent information. This method was implemented to guarantee a thorough investigation of the subject matter. Keywords included; "Artificial Intelligence", "Machine Learning", "Neural Networks", "Virtual Reality", "Digital Dentistry", "CAD/CAM", and "Restorative Dentistry". Artificial intelligence in digital restorative dentistry has proven to be highly beneficial in various dental CAD/CAM applications. It helps in automating and incorporating esthetic factors, occlusal schemes, and previous practitioners' CAD choices in fabricating dental restorations. AI can also predict the debonding risk of CAD/CAM restorations and the compositional effects on the mechanical properties of its materials. Continuous enhancements are being made to overcome its limitations and open new possibilities for future developments in this field.
