Abstract:Simultaneously guiding electromagnetic waves and heat flow at any incidence angle to smoothly bypass some electromagnetic/thermal sensitive elements is a key factor to ensure efficient communication and thermal protection for an on-chip system. In this study, an omnidirectional on-chip electromagnetic-thermal cloak is proposed. Firstly, a holey metallic plate with periodic array of subwavelength apertures is designed by optical surface transformation to realize an omnidirectional electromagnetic cloaking module for on-chip electromagnetic signal. Secondly, a two-layer ring-shaped engineered thermal structure is designed by solving Laplace equation to realize an omnidirectional thermal cloaking module for in-chip heat flow. Finally, these two cloaking modules are combined elaborately to achieve cloaking effect for both the electromagnetic waves and thermal fields simultaneously from any detecting direction, thus protecting the build-in electromagnetic/thermal sensitive elements without disturbing the external electromagnetic/thermal signal. The proposed electromagnetic-thermal cloak may have potential advantage in dealing with omnidirectional electromagnetic compatibility/shielding and multi-directional thermal management/dissipation of an on-chip system.

Abstract:For macroscopically manipulating heat flow at will, thermal metamaterials have opened a practical way, which possesses a single function, such as either cloaking or concentrating the flow of heat even though environmental temperature varies. By developing a theory of transformation heat transfer for multiple functions, here we introduce the concept of intelligent thermal metamaterials with a dual function, which is in contrast to the existing thermal metamaterials with single functions. By assembling homogeneous isotropic materials and shape-memory alloys, we experimentally fabricate a kind of intelligent thermal metamaterials, which can automatically change from a cloak (or concentrator) to a concentrator (or cloak) when the environmental temperature changes. This work paves an efficient way for a controllable gradient of heat, and also provides guidance both for arbitrarily manipulating the flow of heat and for efficiently designing similar intelligent metamaterials in other fields.

Abstract:Thermal camouflage has been successful in the conductive regime, where thermal metamaterials embedded in a conductive system can manipulate heat conduction inside the bulk. Most reported approaches are background-dependent and not applicable to radiative heat emitted from the surface of the system. A coating with engineered emissivity is one option for radiative camouflage, but only when the background has uniform temperature. Here, we propose a strategy for radiative camouflage of external objects on a given background using a structured thermal surface. The device is non-invasive and restores arbitrary background temperature distributions on its top. For many practical candidates of the background material with similar emissivity as the device, the object can thereby be radiatively concealed without a priori knowledge of the host conductivity and temperature. We expect this strategy to meet the demands of anti-detection and thermal radiation manipulation in complex unknown environments and to inspire developments in phononic and photonic thermotronics.

Abstract:Since the advent of transformation optics and scattering cancelling technology, a plethora of unprecedented metamaterials, especially invisibility cloaks, have been successfully demonstrated in various communities, e.g., optics, acoustics, elastic mechanics, dc electric field, dc magnetic field, and thermotics. A long-held captivation is that transformation-optic metamaterials of anisotropic or noncentrosymmetric geometry (e.g., ellipsoids) commonly come along with parameter approximation/simplification or directional functions. Here, a synthetic paradigm with strictly full parameters and omnidirectionality is reported simultaneously to address this long-held issue for molding heat flow and experimentally demonstrate a series of noncentrosymmetric thermal metadevices. It changes the usual perception that transformation thermotic/dc/acoustic metamaterials are just a direct and simplified derivatives of the transformation-optic counterpart. Instead, the proposed methodology solves an intriguingly important and challenging problem that is not possibly achievable for transformation-optic metamaterials. The approach is rigorous, exact, robust, and yet elegantly facile, which may open a new avenue to manipulating the Laplacian and wave-dynamic fields in ways previously inconceivable.
A Multi-Cloak Bifunctional Device

Abstract:Invisibility cloak has attracted the attention of electromagnetic researchers due to its magical properties and marvelous potential applications in the field of applied physics and engineering. Recently, a multiphysics cloaking has put the new spirit into this field. In this paper, we introduce a device, composed of three shells and each shell works as an invisibility cloak for a specific physical phenomenon. Following this technique, a number of cloaks with different implementation approaches can be proposed for distinct physical phenomena in a single structure. Here, we restrict ourselves for the case of two physical behaviors: thermal and electrical conductivities. This type of multi-cloaking structure can be best used in mechanically designed structures to better control heating and electrical effects.

Abstract:Electromagnetic invisible devices usually designed by transformation optics are rather complicated in material parameters and not suitable for general applications. Recently, a topology optimized cloak based on level-set method was proposed to realize nearly perfect cloaking [Fujii et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 102, 251106 (2013)]. In this work, we experimentally implemented this idea and fabricated a unidirectional cloak with a relative large invisible region made of single dielectric material. Good cloaking performance was verified through measurement which consists very well with numerical simulation. The advantages and disadvantages of this optimization method are also discussed.
Ultrathin Conformal Magnetic Invisible Cloak for Irregular Objects.

Abstract:Magnetic invisible cloaking has been previously demonstrated but only limited to objects with rotational geometries either in spherical or cylindrical shapes, for which the classic analytical bilayer scheme could be strictly applied to design the hiding coat. In this work, we show that a quasi-static cloaking effect could be achieved for irregular objects, e.g., metals with sharp edges, using a numerical optimization scheme. In the quasi-static limit, it is unambiguously proved that the disturbance of the irregular geometries could be well compensated by the inhomogeneous distribution of the soft ferromagnetic (FM) layer either in permeability values or in shapes under the framework of a bilayer cloak. An FM mesh coat with a constant thickness of 0.5 mm was successfully engineered to meet the specific requirements. Experimentally, good cloaking performance with a field disturbance of less than 0.5% has been achieved for a 2 × 2 × 5 cm3 brass bar in a wide frequency range from ∼10 to 250 kHz. A commercial metal scanner was also applied to verify the practical potential. The general strategy to hide almost arbitrary objects was discussed in the end. In principle, the numerical conformal coat engineered by the composite material proposed here could be broadly extended for objects with various geometries.

Abstract:The existence of a non-electrically-small scatterer adjacent to the source can severely distort the radiation and lead to a poor electromagnetic compatibility. In this work, we use a conducting hollow cylinder to shield a cylindrical scatterer. The cylinder is shelled with a single dielectric layer enclosed by an electromagnetic metasurface. The relationship between the scattering field and the surface impedance is derived analytically. By optimizing the Fourier expansion coefficients of the surface impedance distribution along ϕ-dimension, the scattering cross-section can be effectively reduced. This unidirectional cloaking method is valid for both TM/TE and non-TM/TE incident field and is not limited to a plane-wave incident field. The accuracy and effectiveness of the method are verified by four cloaking scenarios in microwave regime. We demonstrate that with the surface impedance obtained by the proposed method, a metasurface is designed with physical subwavelength structures. We also show a cloaking scenario under a magnetic dipole radiation, which is closer to the case of a realistic antenna. This method can be further applied to cloaking tasks in terahertz and optical regimes.

Abstract:Thermal-electric bilayer invisibility cloak can prevent the heat flux and electric current from touching the object without distorting the external temperature and electric potential fields simultaneously. In this paper, we design an omnidirectional thermal-electric invisibility cloak with anisotropic geometry. Based on the theory of neutral inclusion, the anisotropic effective thermal and electric conductivities of confocal elliptical bilayer core-shell structure are derived, thus obtaining the anisotropic matrix material to eliminate the external disturbances omnidirectionally. The inner shell of the cloak is selected as an insulating material to shield the heat flux and electric current. Then, the omnidirectional thermal-electric cloaking effect is verified numerically and experimentally based on the theoretical anisotropic matrix and manufactured composite structure, respectively. Furthermore, we achieve the thermal-electric cloaking effect under a specific direction of heat flux and electric current using the isotropic natural materials to broaden the selection range of materials. The method proposed to eliminate anisotropy and achieve the omnidirectional effect could also be expanded to other different physical fields for the metadevices with different functions.
Omnithermal Metamaterials Switchable Between Transparency and Cloaking

Abstract:Transparency and cloaking are two typical functions of thermal metamaterials that have attracted intensive research interest. However, two restrictions remain to be solved. The first one is that existing studies considered only one or two modes of heat transfer, which may not be consistent with practical conditions because conduction, radiation, and convection often coexist. The second one is that transparency and cloaking cannot be switched between at will. To solve these problems, we propose an effective medium theory to handle conductive, radiative, and convective (herein called omnithermal) processes simultaneously, which is based on the Fourier law, the Rosseland diffusion approximation, and the Darcy law. With the present theory, we further design an omnithermal metamaterial switchable between transparency and cloaking, which results from the nonlinear properties of radiation and convection. Finite-element simulations indicate that our scheme is robust under different boundary conditions. These results have potential applications such as in thermal camouflage, nonlinear thermotics, and intelligent thermotics.

Abstract:Heat flux manipulation based on thermal metamaterials under diffusive heat conduction has been extensively studied due to their extraordinary potential in energy utilization. However, the requirement of extreme material parameters or even infinite singularity may significantly limit their practical applications. In this work, we propose a new method for uniformly designing thermal cloak and concentrator with interconnected structure. The condition for realizing the undisturbed temperature distribution of the background medium in thermal cloak is strictly deduced. Through adjusting two geometric parameters of the interconnected structure, we analytically demonstrate that the thermal cloak and concentrator are realizable, where the heat flux can be shielded or concentrated in the target region. The desired thermal functionalities are confirmed both by the finite element simulations and heat transfer experiments. Furthermore, the results of interconnected structure are in excellent agreement with that of conventional thermal devices, and demonstrate that the interconnected structure provides an efficient method for manipulating heat flux over a very wide range (from cloaking to concentrating) despite having a simple composition and structural characteristics. The feasibility of interconnected structure can enhance the selection of bulk natural materials in addition to easy manufacturability for the heat flux manipulation, which might be extended to other disciplines, such as electromagnetics and acoustics.

Abstract:Invisible cloaks have been widely explored in many different physical systems but usually for a single phenomenon for one device. In this Letter we make an experimental attempt to show a multidisciplinary framework that has the capability to simultaneously respond to two different physical excitations according to predetermined scenarios. As a proof of concept, we implement an electric-thermal bifunctional device that can guide both electric current and heat flux "across" a strong 'scatterer' (air cavity) and restore their original diffusion directions as if nothing exists along the paths, thus rendering dual cloaking effects for objects placed inside the cavity. This bifunctional cloaking performance is also numerically verified for a line-source nonuniform excitation. Our results and the fabrication technique presented here will help broaden the current research scope for multiple disciplines and may pave a way to manipulate multiple flows and create new functional devices, e.g., for on-chip applications.

Abstract:Invisibility has attracted intensive research in various communities, e.g., optics, electromagnetics, acoustics, thermodynamics, etc. However, the most of them have only been experimentally achieved by virtue of simplified approaches due to their inhomogeneous and extreme parameters imposed by transformation-optic method, and usually require challenging realization with metamaterials. In this paper, we demonstrate an advanced bilayer thermal cloak with naturally available materials first time. This scheme, directly from thermal conduction equation, has been validated as an exact cloak rather than a reduced one, and we experimentally confirmed its perfect performance (heat-front maintenance and heat protection) in an actual setup. The proposed scheme may open a new avenue to control the diffusive heat flow in ways inconceivable with phonons.

Abstract:Electromagnetic cloaking with monitors within waveguide plays a pivotal role in minimizing the risk of detection while intercepting sensitive information which holds immense potential in both military and communication sectors. However, the integration of electromagnetic cloaking and monitoring is challenging and even more difficult to realize in waveguide. To address these challenges, we propose a metadevice design method based on the internal multiport method (IMPM) for ensuring effective monitoring while maintaining electromagnetic cloaking in the complex environments of waveguide systems. Strategically adjusting the distribution and arrangement of auxiliary scatterers in proximity to the monitoring apparatus can flexibly regulate the behavior of electromagnetic wave propagation to enhance the cloaking performance of metadevice. The cases presented in the paper validate the designed metadevices that are capable of achieving both cloaking and monitoring for monitors within waveguide systems.

Abstract:Thermal convection is one of the three basic mechanisms of heat transfer, which profoundly influences the natural environment, social production, and our daily life. However, the high complexity of the governing equation, which describes the coupling of heat and mass transfer, makes it difficult to manipulate thermal convection at will in both theory and experiment. Here, we consider the heat transfer in Hele-Shaw cells, a widely used model of Stokes flow between two parallel plates with a small gap, and apply the scattering-cancellation technology to construct convective thermal materials with bilayer structures and homogeneous isotropic materials. By tailoring thermal conductivities and viscosities, we demonstrate cloaking devices that can hide obstacles from heat and fluid motion simultaneously, and verify their robustness under various thermal-convection environments by numerical simulations. Our results show that about 80% of the temperature and pressure disturbances in the background caused by obstacles can be eliminated by the cloak. The developed approach can be extended to control other convection-diffusion systems or even other multiphysics processes, and the results pave a promising path for designing various metadevices such as concentrators or sensors.

Abstract:In the field of heat manipulation, active thermal cloaks based on thermoelectric chips (TECs) have received much less attention than passive thermal cloaks based on metamaterials. This work focuses on active thermal cloaks and explores in-depth their mechanism of heat flow regulation. For a two-dimensional circular object located in a rectangular background plate with uniform temperature gradient, the theoretical design of an active cloak was realized by analytically solving for the target temperature field. A parameter study was conducted numerically for the designed thermal cloak. The results show that the object-to-background thermal conductivity ratio (m) is the key parameter that determines the working mode of the cloak. When m < 1, the TECs work in a heating mode with less power consumption; when m > 1, the TECs work in a chilling/heat pump mode with higher power consumption. If the change of a certain parameter increases the heat flow regulation, it will also cause performance degradation and an increase of the thermal cloak’s power consumption, especially when m is greater than 1. Improvement can be achieved by increasing the number of TECs (N), but the impact of N diminishes rapidly beyond a certain value. The systematic study in this work reveals the high flexibility and wide adaptability of the TE-chip-based thermal cloak in heat flow regulation.

Full-wave Analysis of Conical Cloaking Structures

Abstract:Concealing an object by only covering an open space can be realized with a conical cloak. It is shown that we can not only use a conical cloak to guide the electromagnetic (EM) wave totally around an open region without introducing any scattered field, but also design one which produces the reflection exactly the same as that caused by a dielectric half space, in addition, it is demonstrated that introducing a little loss can significantly reduce the electric field distributed at the infinite side of the conical cloak, which indicate the possibility of truncating the conical cloak in axial direction and opens a path to its physical realization. Our approach provides a practical way to achieve invisibility, especially in the case where there are two half spaces composed of different media.

Abstract:Thermal metamaterials have aroused broad research interests for their potential applications in heat manipulation. Among them, bilayer thermal cloak is a representative one. However, the requirement of zero thermal conductivity of the inner layer may largely restrict broader applications. In this work, we remove the requirement of zero thermal conductivity and explore a ternary component structure. By calculating its effective thermal conductivity, we derive some special relations which result in two distinct camouflage behaviors, i.e., thermal magnifier and external cloak. Concretely speaking, thermal magnifier can thermally disguise a small object into a big one, and external cloak can thermally hide a component outside the cloak. Finite-element simulations are conducted in both two and three dimensions, which echo with our theoretical prediction. The ternary component structure has potential applications in thermal camouflage, thermal invisibility, etc. This work not only paves the way for designing camouflage in thermotics but also opens up an avenue for exploring camouflage in other diffusive fields like electrostatic, magnetostatic, and particle diffusive fields.
An Ultra-Thin Skin Cloak for Electromagnetic, Acoustic and Water Wave

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate the possibility of hiding an arbitrarily shaped and sized object from different waves, i.e., electromagnetic (EM) waves, acoustic waves, and water waves, with a single suitably designed, ultrathin graded metasurface carpet cloak. Mathematically, in a two-dimensional homogenous space, transverse magnetic EM, acoustic, and water waves are governed by the same equation, namely, Helmholtz equation. Besides, the boundaries set at the aluminium elements for these three physical systems are the same. If these three kinds of waves have the same wavelength, the field distributions will be exactly the same. Thus a single designed metasurface cloak can provide abrupt, inhomogeneous reflection phases to compensate the phase distortion introduced by a bare bump for these three waves. Full-wave numerical simulations are applied to demonstrate the effectiveness of our metasurface cloak.
