Abstract:Thermal cloaks have been experimentally demonstrated by utilizing the bilayer or multilayer composite approach. The interfacial thermal resistance (ITR) makes the temperature discontinuous once heat trans-fers through the interface between two different materials. However, this effect has been totally ignored so far in the experiment of thermal cloaks. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an ITR-free thermal cloak that is made of a single material, which totally eliminates the disturbing effect of ITR. Our design is inspired by the concept of equivalent thermal conductivity, which is achieved by varying the cross section of heat transfer. The cloaking effect is experimentally confirmed in both steady-state and tran-sient cases, demonstrating excellent thermodynamic performance. The proposed scheme also enables the intrinsic realization of ITR-free multiphysics cloak employing only a single material.(c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:For macroscopically manipulating heat flow at will, thermal metamaterials have opened a practical way, which possesses a single function, such as either cloaking or concentrating the flow of heat even though environmental temperature varies. By developing a theory of transformation heat transfer for multiple functions, here we introduce the concept of intelligent thermal metamaterials with a dual function, which is in contrast to the existing thermal metamaterials with single functions. By assembling homogeneous isotropic materials and shape-memory alloys, we experimentally fabricate a kind of intelligent thermal metamaterials, which can automatically change from a cloak (or concentrator) to a concentrator (or cloak) when the environmental temperature changes. This work paves an efficient way for a controllable gradient of heat, and also provides guidance both for arbitrarily manipulating the flow of heat and for efficiently designing similar intelligent metamaterials in other fields.

Abstract:Since the advent of transformation optics and scattering cancelling technology, a plethora of unprecedented metamaterials, especially invisibility cloaks, have been successfully demonstrated in various communities, e.g., optics, acoustics, elastic mechanics, dc electric field, dc magnetic field, and thermotics. A long-held captivation is that transformation-optic metamaterials of anisotropic or noncentrosymmetric geometry (e.g., ellipsoids) commonly come along with parameter approximation/simplification or directional functions. Here, a synthetic paradigm with strictly full parameters and omnidirectionality is reported simultaneously to address this long-held issue for molding heat flow and experimentally demonstrate a series of noncentrosymmetric thermal metadevices. It changes the usual perception that transformation thermotic/dc/acoustic metamaterials are just a direct and simplified derivatives of the transformation-optic counterpart. Instead, the proposed methodology solves an intriguingly important and challenging problem that is not possibly achievable for transformation-optic metamaterials. The approach is rigorous, exact, robust, and yet elegantly facile, which may open a new avenue to manipulating the Laplacian and wave-dynamic fields in ways previously inconceivable.
Experimentally Demonstrated A Unidirectional Electromagnetic Cloak Designed by Topology Optimization

Abstract:Electromagnetic invisible devices usually designed by transformation optics are rather complicated in material parameters and not suitable for general applications. Recently, a topology optimized cloak based on level-set method was proposed to realize nearly perfect cloaking [Fujii et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 102, 251106 (2013)]. In this work, we experimentally implemented this idea and fabricated a unidirectional cloak with a relative large invisible region made of single dielectric material. Good cloaking performance was verified through measurement which consists very well with numerical simulation. The advantages and disadvantages of this optimization method are also discussed.
Multithermally invisible cloaks and sensors with complex shapes

Abstract:Multithermal metamaterials are more practical to control thermal energy because there are three basic modes of thermal transport in nature. However, existing theories for multithermotics, such as the transformation theory and effective medium theory, are limited to complicated parameters or regular shapes. To solve the problem, we apply the thermal uniqueness theorem together with the heat flux conservation to design multithermal metamaterials including invisible cloaks and sensors. Multithermotics refers to the combination of conduction and radiation, which are described by the Fourier law and the Rosseland diffusion approximation, respectively. The present scheme can simplify parameters despite complex shapes, which only requires simple layered structures. We further perform finite-element simulations with different shapes to confirm the desired effects. These results provide guidance for multithermal management such as considering the combination of other basic modes of thermal transport. Copyright (C) 2021 EPLA

Abstract:Invisibility has attracted intensive research in various communities, e.g., optics, electromagnetics, acoustics, thermodynamics, etc. However, the most of them have only been experimentally achieved by virtue of simplified approaches due to their inhomogeneous and extreme parameters imposed by transformation-optic method, and usually require challenging realization with metamaterials. In this paper, we demonstrate an advanced bilayer thermal cloak with naturally available materials first time. This scheme, directly from thermal conduction equation, has been validated as an exact cloak rather than a reduced one, and we experimentally confirmed its perfect performance (heat-front maintenance and heat protection) in an actual setup. The proposed scheme may open a new avenue to control the diffusive heat flow in ways inconceivable with phonons.

Abstract:Heat flux manipulation based on thermal metamaterials under diffusive heat conduction has been extensively studied due to their extraordinary potential in energy utilization. However, the requirement of extreme material parameters or even infinite singularity may significantly limit their practical applications. In this work, we propose a new method for uniformly designing thermal cloak and concentrator with interconnected structure. The condition for realizing the undisturbed temperature distribution of the background medium in thermal cloak is strictly deduced. Through adjusting two geometric parameters of the interconnected structure, we analytically demonstrate that the thermal cloak and concentrator are realizable, where the heat flux can be shielded or concentrated in the target region. The desired thermal functionalities are confirmed both by the finite element simulations and heat transfer experiments. Furthermore, the results of interconnected structure are in excellent agreement with that of conventional thermal devices, and demonstrate that the interconnected structure provides an efficient method for manipulating heat flux over a very wide range (from cloaking to concentrating) despite having a simple composition and structural characteristics. The feasibility of interconnected structure can enhance the selection of bulk natural materials in addition to easy manufacturability for the heat flux manipulation, which might be extended to other disciplines, such as electromagnetics and acoustics.

Abstract:Thermal metamaterials have aroused broad research interests for their potential applications in heat manipulation. Among them, bilayer thermal cloak is a representative one. However, the requirement of zero thermal conductivity of the inner layer may largely restrict broader applications. In this work, we remove the requirement of zero thermal conductivity and explore a ternary component structure. By calculating its effective thermal conductivity, we derive some special relations which result in two distinct camouflage behaviors, i.e., thermal magnifier and external cloak. Concretely speaking, thermal magnifier can thermally disguise a small object into a big one, and external cloak can thermally hide a component outside the cloak. Finite-element simulations are conducted in both two and three dimensions, which echo with our theoretical prediction. The ternary component structure has potential applications in thermal camouflage, thermal invisibility, etc. This work not only paves the way for designing camouflage in thermotics but also opens up an avenue for exploring camouflage in other diffusive fields like electrostatic, magnetostatic, and particle diffusive fields.

Abstract:In the existing literature of thermal metamaterials or metadevices, many properties or functions are designed via coordinate transformation theory (transformation thermotics), including thermal concentrating and cloaking. But other properties or functions, say, thermal transparency, are designed by using theories differing from the transformation thermotics. Here, we put forward an effective medium theory in thermotics by considering anisotropic layered/graded structures, and we reveal that the theory can unify transparency, concentrating, and cloaking into the same theoretical framework. Furthermore, the theory not only gives the criterion for transparency, concentrating, and cloaking, but also helps to predict a type of ellipses-embedded structures which can achieve transparency, concentrating, and cloaking, respectively. The prediction is confirmed by our finite-element simulations and/or experiments. This work provides a different theory to understand and design thermal metamaterials or metadevices, which might be extended to other disciplines, such as optics/electromagnetics and acoustics. The Scattering of a Cylindrical Invisibility Cloak: Reduced Parameters and Optimization

Abstract:We investigate the scattering of 2D cylindrical invisibility cloaks with simplified constitutive parameters with the assistance of scattering coefficients. We show that the scattering of the cloaks originates not only from the boundary conditions but also from the spatial variation of the component of permittivity/permeability. According to our formulation, we propose some restrictions to the invisibility cloak in order to minimize its scattering after the simplification has taken place. With our theoretical analysis, it is possible to design a simplified cloak using some peculiar composites such as photonic crystals which mimic an effective refractive index landscape rather than offering effective constitutives, meanwhile cancelling the scattering from the inner and outer boundaries.
Omnithermal Metamaterials Switchable Between Transparency and Cloaking

Abstract:Transparency and cloaking are two typical functions of thermal metamaterials that have attracted intensive research interest. However, two restrictions remain to be solved. The first one is that existing studies considered only one or two modes of heat transfer, which may not be consistent with practical conditions because conduction, radiation, and convection often coexist. The second one is that transparency and cloaking cannot be switched between at will. To solve these problems, we propose an effective medium theory to handle conductive, radiative, and convective (herein called omnithermal) processes simultaneously, which is based on the Fourier law, the Rosseland diffusion approximation, and the Darcy law. With the present theory, we further design an omnithermal metamaterial switchable between transparency and cloaking, which results from the nonlinear properties of radiation and convection. Finite-element simulations indicate that our scheme is robust under different boundary conditions. These results have potential applications such as in thermal camouflage, nonlinear thermotics, and intelligent thermotics.
Time Domain Study of Electromagnetic Cloaks for Wideband Invisibility under Transient Illumination

Abstract:In this paper, the transient behavior of wideband cylindrical electromagnetic cloaks is investigated, and potential applications and design guidelines for such devices are described. Since virtually all published studies on electromagnetic cloaking assume a time-harmonic steady-state excitation, there exists very little information on the transient response of such devices in the literature. We show that cloaks can be designed to defeat tran-sients with bandwidths of over one octave, provided that these cloaks are immersed in media with sufficiently high relative permittivity and permeability, so that the use of dispersive materials with constitutive parameters less than unity can be avoided. Tran-sient time domain simulation results for cylindrical cloaks realized by concentric isotropic shells are presented, demonstrat-ing excellent transient behavior. Design guidelines and potential applications are also described.

Abstract:Transformation optics has made a major contribution to the advancement of modern electromagnetism and related research assisted by the development of metamaterials. In this work, we applied this concept to the thermodynamics using the coordinate transformation to the time-dependent heat diffusion equation to manipulate the heat flux by predefined diffusion paths. Experimentally, we demonstrated a transient thermal cloaking device engineered with effective thermal materials and successfully hid a centimeter-sized vacuum cavity. A rescaled heat equation accounting for all the pertinent parameters of various ingredient materials was proposed to greatly facilitate the fabrication. Our results unambiguously demonstrate the practical possibility of implementing complex transformed thermal media with high accuracy and acquiring several unprecedented thermodynamic functions, which we believe will help to broaden the current research and pave a new path to manipulate heat for novel device applications.

Abstract:AbstractThe idea of “thermal invisibility” has secured a pivotal position in both academic exploration and real-world application. Within the academic realm, the advent of thermal metamaterials has seamlessly intertwined with the principles of thermal invisibility, propelling this domain to the vanguard of contemporary research. Practically speaking, the potential of thermal invisibility is vast, encompassing realms from environmental stewardship and avant-garde chip engineering to intricate facets of national defense. This chapter delves holistically into the odyssey of thermal invisibility, tracing its journey from nascent theoretical musings to state-of-the-art implementations. We initiate by navigating the bedrock techniques undergirding thermal invisibility designs, including transformation theory, scattering cancellation theory, and topological optimization, while deep-diving into the substantial research orbiting these paradigms. Progressing further, we spotlight three game-changing advancements in thermal invisibility: carpet cloaks, ITR-free thermal cloaks, and thermal domes. These breakthroughs adeptly address the challenges intrinsic to conventional thermal cloaks, such as fabrication intricacies, the repercussions of interfacial thermal resistance, and application constraints. Notably, the evolution of thermal invisibility dovetails with the maturation of thermal metamaterials. Through this overview, we aim to furnish readers with a refreshed vantage point on the historical arc of this enthralling discipline.

Abstract:Although the subject of thermal cloaking has attracted extensive academic attention, most pioneering studies have so far focused on thermal conduction systems or thermal convection in the porous media, which prevents the object from moving. Here, we have discovered that Stokes equations and the energy transport equation do abide by the coordinate-transformation invariant theory if the former is replaced with the pressure Laplace equation. This discovery enables us to rightfully take advantage of the merit of this theory and to analytically design metamaterial thermo-hydrodynamic cloaks. More importantly, since our designed cloaks depend on the viscosity and the thermal conductivity of background flows as well as geometries of cloaks only, but not on boundary conditions of background flows, they can be continuously utilized when objects travel in the media under realistic flow conditions. Besides, we also suggest experimental demonstrations to show the feasibility of our design. Finally, it is our hope that numerical data obtained in the proposed study can (1) facilitate the realization of lab experiments as well as help them identify characteristic flow and thermal parameters, and (2) serve as a stepping stone to further explore other thermo-hydrodynamic metamaterial devices.
Mechanism analysis of double-layer nanoscale thermal cloak by silicon film

Abstract:Cloaking technology has always been a topic of interest, and the advent of transformation optics and metamaterials have made a major step forward in this area of research. Subsequently, metamaterials extend to the field of thermotics, making thermal cloaks a reality. In recent years, researchers have designed several nanoscale thermal cloaks based on graphene, silicon and explained their cloaking mechanisms by phonon localization theory. However, the influence of the interface between the functional and background regions is not well clear. In the present study, we construct a double-layer nanoscale thermal cloak by perforating and the "melt and quench" technique, and create two interfaces in the functional and background regions to investigate the heat transport mechanism. To study the working performance, we calculate the response temperature and ratio of thermal cloaking. As the amorphous region and the number of holes increase, the cloaking performance is enhanced and the perturbation to the background region decreases. To explore the working mechanism, we calculate the spectral decomposition of the heat current at the interface. We find that the crystal-amorphous interface impedes the heat flux more than the crystal-perforation interface. Using the phonon localization theory, we calculate the phonon density of states and mode participation rate. The reason for cloaking is the reduced thermal conductivity in the functional area due to phonon localization. Our study deepens the understanding of nanoscale heat flux regulation. Besides, it can promote the development of spectral decomposition of the heat current and phonon localization theory.

Abstract:Thermal-electric bilayer invisibility cloak can prevent the heat flux and electric current from touching the object without distorting the external temperature and electric potential fields simultaneously. In this paper, we design an omnidirectional thermal-electric invisibility cloak with anisotropic geometry. Based on the theory of neutral inclusion, the anisotropic effective thermal and electric conductivities of confocal elliptical bilayer core-shell structure are derived, thus obtaining the anisotropic matrix material to eliminate the external disturbances omnidirectionally. The inner shell of the cloak is selected as an insulating material to shield the heat flux and electric current. Then, the omnidirectional thermal-electric cloaking effect is verified numerically and experimentally based on the theoretical anisotropic matrix and manufactured composite structure, respectively. Furthermore, we achieve the thermal-electric cloaking effect under a specific direction of heat flux and electric current using the isotropic natural materials to broaden the selection range of materials. The method proposed to eliminate anisotropy and achieve the omnidirectional effect could also be expanded to other different physical fields for the metadevices with different functions.
Design of diamond-shaped transient thermal cloaks with homogeneous isotropic materials

Abstract:Transformation thermodynamics as a major extension of transformation optics has recently received considerable attention. In this paper, we present two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) diamond-shaped transient thermal cloaks with non-singular homogeneous material parameters. The absence of singularity in the parameters results from the fact that the linear coordinate transformation is performed by expanding a line segment rather than a point into a region, while the mechanism behind the homogeneity is the homogeneous stretching and compression along orthogonal directions during the transformation. Although the derived parameters remain anisotropic, we further show that this can be circumvented by considering a layered structure composed of only four types of isotropic materials based on the effective medium theory. Numerical simulation results confirm the good performance of the proposed cloaks.

Abstract:With the increasing requirement of metamaterials, integration and intellectualization have become the trends in order to enhance the manipulation efficiency of physical fields. Therefore, multiphysical functions and metamaterials have been proposed intensively. Meanwhile, the higher requirement of materials and structures is also put forward. In this work, by applying a shell and a dipole as two controllable conditions, multiphysical (say, thermal and electrical) invisibility can be obtained simultaneously with only common materials and simple structures. We explore the dipole effects in a core-shell structure and derive the requirements of the shell and dipole in both two and three dimensions, even considering the shells with material anisotropy. Finite-element simulations are consistent with theoretical analyses, confirming the feasibility of our scheme. These results may not only provide guidance to thermal and electrical management, but also benefit other physical fields such as electrostatics and magnetostatics.
A Hybrid Invisibility Cloak Based on Integration of Transparent Metasurfaces and Zero-Index Materials

Abstract:The invisibility cloak, a long-standing fantastic dream for humans, has become more tangible with the development of metamaterials. Recently, metasurface-based invisibility cloaks have been proposed and realized with significantly reduced thickness and complexity of the cloaking shell. However, the previous scheme is based on reflection-type metasurfaces and is thus limited to reflection geometry. In this work, by integrating the wavefront tailoring functionality of transparent metasurfaces and the wave tunneling functionality of zero-index materials, we have realized a unique type of hybrid invisibility cloak that functions in transmission geometry. The principle is general and applicable to arbitrary shapes. For experimental demonstration, we constructed a rhombic double-layer cloaking shell composed of a highly transparent metasurface and a double-zero medium consisting of dielectric photonic crystals with Dirac cone dispersions. The cloaking effect is verified by both full-wave simulations and microwave experimental results. The principle also reveals exciting possibilities for realizing skin-thick ultrathin cloaking shells in transmission geometry, which can eliminate the need for spatially varying extreme parameters. Our work paves a path for novel optical and electromagnetic devices based on the integration of metasurfaces and metamaterials.
