Abstract:Background: The effect of an immune-boosting beverage (SAM) containing Sambucus Nigra, an energy beverage (ENE), an in-office bleaching (BLE) agent with 25% hydrogen peroxide superior, glazing (GLA) or polishing (POL) methods, and professional dental prophylaxis (PDP) on the color of CAD-CAM restorative materials is unknown. Methods: In total 210 specimens were prepared, consisting of CAD-CAM feldspathic (FC), zirconia-reinforced lithium disilicate ceramic (ZLS) and hybrid ceramic (HC). The ceramic specimens were divided according to the polishing methods of glazing (GLA) and mechanical polishing (POL). All materials were divided into two groups: with and without BLE. A 25% hydrogen peroxide superior (HPS) gel was used for BLE. After the baseline (BAS) measurement, the specimens were immersed in 3 different beverages (distilled water (DIS), SAM, ENE). After 28 days, a fine-grained (RDA 7) prophylaxis paste was applied. Statistical analysis of ∆E00 color difference values was performed by 3-way ANOVA and Bonferroni test (α = 0.05). Results: The effect of all other actions except material-BLE-beverage on color for BAS-Day 28 was statistically different (p < 0.05). The effect of material, material-BLE, beverage on color for Day 28-PDP was statistically different (p < 0.05). After 28 days, the lowest color change was found in FC-GLA and HC immersed in DIS (p = 0.0001) and the highest in FC-POL immersed in ENE (p = 0.0002). PDP was efficient in color recovery in HC immersed to DIS, ENE and SAM (p = 0.0010). For FC, HC and ZLS, BLE caused a higher color change (p < 0.0001). Regardless of the material, the highest color change for BLE-beverage was found in BLE-treated specimens immersed in ENE (p = 0.0496) and the lowest color change was found in non-BLE-treated specimens immersed in SAM (p = 0.0074). Conclusions: In materials pre-exposed to 25% HPS, the effect of PDP on color recovery was lower than in unexposed materials. After 28 days, mechanical polishing produced higher color change in FC than glazing, however, in ZLS effects of glazing and mechanical polishing on color were similar. For material/polishing method, HC was the most effective. ENE caused higher color change than DIS and SAM. PDP was more effective than ENE in restoring color to DIS- and SAM-immersed specimens.

Abstract:Learning in the marine mollusk Aplysia has been associated with enhanced sensory function, expressed in mechanosensory neurons as (i) decreases in action potential threshold, accommodation, and afterhyperpolarization, and (ii) increases in action potential duration, afterdischarge, and synaptic transmission. These alterations also occur, with a delay, after sensory axons are injured under conditions in which synaptic transmission is severely reduced. The latency and specificity of injury-induced alterations indicate that induction signals are generated at the site of injury and conveyed centrally by axonal transport. Similarities in neuronal modifications support the hypothesis that some memory mechanisms evolved from mechanisms of injury-induced sensory compensation and repair.
Effect of surface roughness and biofilm formation on the color properties of resin-infiltrated ceramic and lithium disilicate glass-ceramic CAD-CAM materials

Abstract:Statement of problem Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) materials have become popular for dental restorations; however, which materials should be preferred in terms of surface properties after biofilm formation is unclear. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of biofilm formation on the discoloration properties of resin-infiltrated ceramic and glass ceramic CAD-CAM materials and human teeth and to examine the effect of the brushing procedure on color change. Material and methods One hundred and six 2-mm-thick specimens were prepared from IPS e.max CAD and Cerasmart, and a total of 53 intact human teeth were used. Five specimens from each group were used to measure the amount of live biomass in the biofilm. The remaining 48 specimens in each group were divided into 4 subgroups: kept in distilled water without the formation of dental biofilm (DW), kept in tea without the formation of dental biofilm (T), kept in distilled water after the formation of dental biofilm (DWB), and kept in tea after the formation of dental biofilm (TB) (n=12). After finishing and polishing the materials, initial color measurements were made using a spectrophotometer, and surface roughness measurements were made using noncontact profilometer. After creating a biofilm layer in DWB and TB, all specimens were kept in their solutions at 37 °C for 24 hours, and the color measurements were repeated. After the biofilm layer had been removed by brushing, a third color measurement was made. The data were statistically analyzed with one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and two-way ANOVA (α=.05). Results The lowest roughness value was observed in Cerasmart. Tooth-IPS e.max CAD gave similar results. The Cerasmart material had the most viable biomass, whereas the IPS e.max CAD material had the least. TB had the highest ΔE1 value for all materials and DW had the lowest ( P <.05). The brushing procedure caused the materials to return to their initial colors or reduce the color change in most groups. Conclusions The presence of biofilm on CAD-CAM materials immersed in distilled water caused an unacceptable degree of discoloration (ΔE>1.8), and immersion in tea led to greater color change. The adhesion of biofilm to restorative dental materials plays an important role in the coloring of these dental materials.

Abstract:Abstract Background The purpose of this study evaluates and compares the effect of surface roughness (Ra) and color stability on computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) hybrid resin (Vita Enamic), feldspathic (Vitablocs® Mark II), and lithium disilicate Zirconia (Vita Suprinity) glazed or polished ceramics immersed in hot Arabic Qahwa and cold coffee. Methods A total of 96 standardized samples were prepared from CAD/CAM restorative materials. Half of the samples were polished as per the manufacturer’s instructions using a porcelain polishing kit, and the other half were glazed. Samples were distributed and immersed in hot Arabian Qahwa and cold coffee followed by thermocycling. Ra measurements and color changes were conducted before and after immersion. SEM images were captured from each type of glazed or polished ceramic. One-way ANOVA paired Student’s t-test, and Bonferroni test were conducted to detect significant difference between the groups. P > 0.05 was a significant level. Results Of all the tested samples, Ra increased without any significant difference; however, mean color changes (ΔE*) showed significant differences. An increase in Ra was noted for all the glazed and polished samples after immersion and thermocycling. However, differences were significant only in VM II. In addition, ΔE* was significant only in Vita Suprinity (VS) samples. For immersion groups, significant Ra changes were noticed in glazed samples, only in Vita Enamic (VE) with no ΔE*. In polished samples, mean Ra changes were observed in VM II and VS samples. Significant differences were also noticed in polished VE and VS subgroups of ΔE*. Conclusions Ra affects all the tested samples, providing higher values on the polished specimens. The ΔE* caused by hot Arabic Qahwa and cold coffee on glazed or polished CAD/CAM restorative materials were clinically acceptable.

Abstract:Purpose: Denture base materials are commonly exposed to different denture cleansers which can affect their essential properties. This study aimed to assess the effect of denture cleansers on color stability and surface roughness of poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) denture bases fabricated from different techniques: Conventional heat-polymerizing, CAD/CAM additive and CAD/CAM subtractive. Materials and methods: In this in vitro study, 24 disc-shaped specimens were fabricated by the mentioned methods for each group. The initial color and surface roughness of specimens were recorded. The specimens were randomly divided into three subgroups (n = 8): a control subgroup (distilled water), and two experimental subgroups of bioactive oxygen tablet (Corega) and 1% sodium hypochlorite solution. Then they were immersed in the solutions simulating 180 days of clinical use. Color change (∆E) was measured by a spectrophotometer according to the CIE L*a*b* color space and the American National Bureau of Standards (NBS = 0.92 × ∆E). Final surface roughness was recorded by a profilometer and its change was calculated. The Kruskal-Wallis test followed by the Wilcoxon signed rank test were used for statistical analyses (α = .05). Results: The conventional and CAD/CAM subtractive groups showed an increase in surface roughness following immersion in hypochlorite solution (p < .05). After immersion in the solutions, the highest surface roughness was noted in the conventional group, and the lowest in the CAD/CAM additive group. The CAD/CAM additive group experienced a significant color change in hypochlorite solution (p < .05) and showed the highest color change while the CAD/CAM subtractive group showed the lowest color change in all denture cleanser solutions. Conclusion: Although the CAD/CAM additive denture base resins had the lowest surface roughness after exposure to denture cleanser solutions, they showed significant color change, which should be taken into account. Using hypochlorite as a denture cleanser should be cautioned due to its negative effects on the surface roughness and color stability of denture base materials.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: In this study was evaluated the effect of carbamide peroxide (CP) and hydrogen peroxide (HP) in different concentrations on hardness, roughness, and color parameters (color change - ΔE, lightness - ΔL, and yellow-blue axis - Δb) of bovine teeth.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty square dental blocks (7 x 7 x 2 mm) were submitted to initial readings of Knoop hardness, surface roughness (Ra), and color parameters. Specimens were divided into 5 groups (n = 10): control group was kept in artificial saliva during the experimental period; CP 20% was bleached for 2 h daily for 14 days, HP 9.5% was bleached for 30 min daily for 14 days, HP 38% the bleaching gel was applied for 15 min, gel was removed and it was reapplied for two more times, the bleaching session was repeated for another 2 times every 7 days, totaling three sessions, and in CP 45% three sessions of 30 min each were performed of 7 in 7 days. All groups after the bleaching procedures had the bleaching gel removed, washed, and kept in artificial saliva. At the end of bleaching treatment, the hardness, roughness, and color parameters (ΔE, ΔL, and Δb) were re-evaluated. Data were analyzed by ANOVA, Tukey, and Dunnett tests (α = 0.05).RESULTS: Bleaching promoted a reduction in hardness, the CP 45% showed the lowest hardness and the CP 20% the highest, the HP 9.5% and HP 38% showed intermediate values of hardness. Bleaching agents did not affect the roughness. CP 20% and HP 38% promoted the highest values of ΔE and higher reduction of yellowish tone of tooth. Lightness increase after bleaching treatment for all groups.CONCLUSIONS: All the bleaching agents tested showed effectiveness, but with reduced hardness. Abstract:Objective This article evaluates the effect of multipurpose polishing kit on surface roughness and hardness of three computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) ceramic materials at different polishing durations. Weight changes of the polishing bur were also determined. Material and Methods Three CAD/CAM ceramic materials were lithium disilicate glass ceramic (IPS e.max CAD), translucent zirconia (VITA YZ), and zirconia-reinforced lithium disilicate ceramic (Celtra Duo). Ceramics were ground with a diamond bur, and polished with the multipurpose polishing kit (Eve Diacera HP), which comprises coarse and fine polishing burs. Surface roughness value (Ra) was measured using a noncontact optical profilometer ( n = 10 per group) after grinding and every 15 seconds of coarse and fine polishing until 60 seconds. The complete polishing Ra was compared with the lab as-received specimens and human enamel. Surface morphology was examined using a scanning electron microscope after 60-second coarse and fine polishing and compared with the lab as-received specimens. Hardness was measured using a Vickers hardness tester on the lab as-received specimens and after the final polishing process ( n = 4 per group). Changes in surface roughness and polishing bur weight of each material were analyzed using one-way repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and dependent t -test. One-way ANOVA was used to detect differences in surface roughness, Vickers hardness, and bur weight among materials within the same polishing duration ( α = 0.05). Results From grinding to complete polishing, the greatest Ra reduction was found in VITA YZ, followed by Celtra Duo and IPS e.max CAD. Final Ra values of all ceramics after 60-second fine polishing were not significantly different, and were similar to that of enamel and lab as-received specimens. Vickers hardness of ceramic materials did not change after grinding and polishing. Coarse polishing bur demonstrated the highest weight loss after polishing VITA YZ, followed by Celtra Duo and IPS e.max CAD. Conclusion The multipurpose polishing kit reduced surface roughness of CAD/CAM ceramic materials to the similar level of the lab as-received specimen and enamel regardless of material's hardness. The reductions of surface roughness and a coarse polishing bur weight were highest in VITA YZ, followed by Celtra Duo and IPS e.max CAD. Abstract:The case of acute poisoning reported here raises the question of the harmlessness of preparations destined for cutaneous application in infants. After describing the method perfected for the identification and estimation of camphor, menthol and thymol in biological material, the authors present the toxicological, clinical and biological arguments in favour of the notion that the cutaneous resorption of these substances was responsible for this acute intoxication in an infant. Particular attention should be paid to poisoning which may result, in the newborn and infant, from the cutaneous application of active substances.
Towards Prescriptive Analytics in Cyber-Physical Systems

Abstract:More and more of our physical world today is being monitored and controlled by so-called cyber-physical systems (CPSs). These are compositions of networked autonomous cyber and physical agents such as sensors, actuators, computational elements, and humans in the loop. Today, CPSs are still relatively small-scale and very limited compared to CPSs to be witnessed in the future. Future CPSs are expected to be far more complex, large-scale, wide-spread, and mission-critical, and found in a variety of domains such as transportation, medicine, manufacturing, and energy, where they will bring many advantages such as the increased efficiency, sustainability, reliability, and security. To unleash their full potential, CPSs need to be equipped with, among other features, the support for automated planning and control, where computing agents collaboratively and continuously plan and control their actions in an intelligent and well-coordinated manner to secure and optimize a physical process, e.g., electricity flow in the power grid. In today’s CPSs, the control is typically automated, but the planning is solely performed by humans. Unfortunately, it is intractable and infeasible for humans to plan every action in a future CPS due to the complexity, scale, and volatility of a physical process. Due to these properties, the control and planning has to be continuous and automated in future CPSs. Humans may only analyse and tweak the system’s operation using the set of tools supporting prescriptive analytics that allows them (1) to make predictions, (2) to get the suggestions of the most prominent set of actions (decisions) to be taken, and (3) to analyse the implications as if such actions were taken. This thesis considers the planning and control in the context of a large-scale multiagent CPS. Based on the smart-grid use-case, it presents a so-called PrescriptiveCPS – which is (the conceptual model of) a multi-agent, multi-role, and multi-level CPS automatically and continuously taking and realizing decisions in near real-time and providing (human) users prescriptive analytics tools to analyse and manage the performance of the underlying physical system (or process). Acknowledging the complexity of CPSs, this thesis provides contributions at the following three levels of scale: (1) the level of a (full) PrescriptiveCPS, (2) the level of a single PrescriptiveCPS agent, and (3) the level of a component of a CPS agent software system. Impact of Gastric Acid Induced Surface Changes on Mechanical Behavior and Optical Characteristics of Dental Ceramics

Abstract:Purpose: To test the impact of exposure to artificial gastric acid combined with toothbrush abrasion on the properties of dental ceramics. Earlier research has indicated that immersion in artificial gastric acid has caused increased surface roughness of dental ceramics; however, the combined effects of acid immersion and toothbrush abrasion and the impact of increased surface roughness on mechanical strength and optical properties have not been studied. Materials and methods: Three commercially available ceramics were chosen for this study: feldspathic porcelain, lithium disilicate glass-ceramic, and monolithic zirconium oxide. The specimens (10 × 1 mm discs) were cut, thermally treated as required, and polished. Each material was divided into four groups (n = 8 per group): control (no exposure), acid only, brush only, acid + brush. The specimens were immersed in artificial gastric acid (50 ml of 0.2% [w/v] sodium chloride in 0.7% [v/v] hydrochloric acid mixed with 0.16 g of pepsin powder, pH = 2) for 2 minutes and rinsed with deionized water for 2 minutes. The procedure was repeated 6 times/day × 9 days, and specimens were stored in deionized water at 37°C. Toothbrush abrasion was performed using an ISO/ADA design brushing machine for 100 cycles/day × 9 days. The acid + brush group received both treatments. Specimens were examined under SEM and an optical microscope for morphological changes. Color and translucency were measured using spectrophotometer CIELAB coordinates (L*, a*, b*). Surface gloss was measured using a gloss meter. Surface roughness was measured using a stylus profilometer. Biaxial flexural strength was measured using a mechanical testing machine. The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's HSD post hoc test (p < 0.05). Results: Statistically significant changes were found for color, gloss, and surface roughness for porcelain and e.max specimens. No statistically significant changes were found for any properties of zirconia specimens. Conclusions: The acid treatment affected the surface roughness, color, and gloss of porcelain and e.max ceramics. The changes in translucency and mechanical strength for all materials were not statistically significant. Zirconia ceramic showed resistance to all treatments.
Effect of peroxide‐free and peroxide‐based in‐office bleaching on the surface and mechanical properties of CAD/CAM esthetic restorative materials

Abstract:The study aimed to investigate the influence of H2O2‐based and H2O2‐free in‐office bleaching on the surface and mechanical attributes of CAD/CAM composite blocks. CAD/CAM composite blocks from five different composite materials (CC1, CC2, CC3, CC4, and CC5) were randomly divided into two groups according to bleaching application (H2O2‐based and H2O2‐free). The surface topography, morphology, nanohardness, elastic modulus, flexural strength, and fracture toughness were measured. A paired and unpaired sample t‐tests gauged the effect of pre‐ and post‐bleaching on the substrates. The estimated mean differences (before‐after bleaching) suggested an increase in surface roughness for two materials CC2 and CC4, and a significant decrease in nanohardness for material CC4 and in elastic modulus for materials CC2 and CC4 with H2O2‐based bleaching, whereas H2O2‐free bleaching resulted in changes compatible with no change in these properties. Flexural strength and fracture toughness showed no evidence of changes, irrespective of the bleaching gel used. Scanning electron microscopic analysis revealed erosive effects and micropore formation due to H2O2‐based bleaching. H2O2‐based bleaching deteriorates the surface of CAD/CAM composite materials while H2O2‐free bleaching gel had an insignificant effect on both surface and bulk properties. The clinician should carefully evaluate the potential effects of H2O2‐based bleaching on the surface properties of CAD/CAM composites.

Effects of Substrate and Cement Shade on the Translucency and Color of CAD/CAM Lithium-Disilicate and Zirconia Ceramic Materials

Abstract:The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effects of substrate and cement shades on the translucency and color of lithium-disilicate and zirconia CAD/CAM materials. Two light-cured resin cements (RelyX Veneer Cement; 3M; Choice 2 Veneer Cement; Bisco Dental) with a standardized thickness (0.1 mm) were tested in combination with two different monolithic CAD/CAM materials (E-Max CAD (LI2SI2O5); Ivoclar Vivadent; Katana (ZrO2); Kuraray-Noritake Dental) on two different colored composite substrates used as a dentin (Filtek Supreme XTE; 3M); for a total of 12 combinations (n = 10). The specimens’ color was measured with a spectrophotometer (Spectroshade; MHT). Measurements were taken using the CIELAB color coordinate system (L*a*b*) against black and white backgrounds. L*a*b* values were statistically analyzed for the variables Substrate, Ceramic, and Cement by applying a Three-Way ANOVA followed by the Tukey Test for post-hoc comparison (p < 0.05). Translucency Parameter (TP) and Constant Ratio (CR) were assessed to evaluate translucency; acceptability and perceptibility thresholds (ΔE00 1.8 and 0.8) were used. Statistically significant influence was found for factors ceramic material, cement shade, and substrate color (p < 0.05). Unacceptable color differences were reported for Li2Si2O5. Opacity was significantly higher when white opaque cement shade was employed. Ceramic type and cement shade significantly influenced L*a*b* color coordinates. The final translucency and color of ceramic restorations can, therefore, be influenced by ceramic material, cement shade, and substrate color.

Effectiveness of sodium bicarbonate combined with hydrogen peroxide and CPP-ACPF in whitening and microhardness of enamel

Abstract:BACKGROUND: This study investigated the effects of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) combined with 1.5% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and casein phosphopeptide amorphous calcium phosphate fluoride (CPP-ACPF) on color and microhardness of enamel.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-five bovine incisors were immersed in a tea solution for 7.5 days. The specimens were randomly divided into five groups according to the whitening agent applied: 1) 94% NaHCO3, 2) a blend of 94% NaHCO3 and CPP-ACPF, 3) a blend of 94% NaHCO3 and 1.5% H2O2, 4) a blend of 94% NaHCO3, 1.5% H2O2 and CPP-ACPF, 5) control. The whitening procedure was performed for 10 times over 10 days. At each day, the buccal surfaces were covered with whitening agents for 5 minutes and then brushed for 30 seconds. After the 10 days, the teeth were again immersed in a tea solution for 10 minutes. Color assessment was performed at baseline (T1), after the first staining process (T2), after the whitening procedure (T3), and after the second staining process (T4). Finally, the specimens were subjected to microhardness test.RESULTS: There was a statistically significant difference in the color change between T2 and T3 stages among the study groups (<i>p</i><0.05), with the greatest improvement observed in group 4. Microhardness was significantly greater in groups 2 and 4, as compared to the other groups (<i>p</i><0.05).CONCLUSIONS: The combination of 94% NaHCO3, 1.5% H2O2 and CPP-ACPF was effective in improving color and microhardness of teeth with extrinsic stains and could be recommended in the clinical situation.
Effects of different surface treatments on stainability of ceramics

Abstract:Statement of problem: Final adjustments may result in a loss of ceramic glaze, a situation which must be corrected by reglazing or polishing to obtain clinically successful restorations; such restorations may be susceptible to staining. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the stainability of ceramics exposed to coffee after different surface treatments and to correlate the surface roughness with the color differences. Material and methods: Sixty-six ceramic (IPS e.maxCeram) disks (15 × 2 mm) were fabricated and glazed according to the manufacturer's instructions, then assigned to 6 groups. Group Glaze (Group G), the control, was not subjected to any procedure. All the others were abraded with a diamond rotary cutting instrument. Group Reglaze (Group R) was reglazed; others were polished with different polishing materials; Group Shofu (Group S) was polished with abrasive stone (Dura-Green Stones), coarse silicon polisher (Ceramaster Coarse), silicon polisher (CeraMaster), and polishing paste (Ultra II) with polishing disks (Super-Snap Buff Disks); Group Ultradent (Group U) was polished with 1.0 and 0.5-μm polishing pastes (Ultradent Diamond) with a goat hair brush (Jiffy) and Group Bredent (Group B) was polished with an abrasive stone (Diagen turbo grinder), a round polishing brush (Abraso-fix), and polishing paste (Diamond) with felt wheels. Group Diamond rotary cutting instrument (Group D) was not treated after abrasion with a diamond rotary cutting instrument. Surface roughness was evaluated by profilometer (n=10), and 1 specimen from each group was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Color difference was measured by a spectrophotometer before and after 12 days of immersion in a coffee solution. Data were analyzed by 1-way ANOVA, the Tukey HSD test, and the Pearson rank correlation tests (α=.05). Results: The surface roughness (Ra) values were ordered from the highest to the lowest value, which were Group D, B, U, S, R, and G, respectively. Significant differences among groups (P<.01) were found, except for G and R. There were no significant differences between the color difference values of Groups G and R, both of which were significantly lower than the other groups (P<.01). Group D showed the highest ΔE values (>2), which is considered clinically unacceptable (P<.01). No significant differences were found among the S, U, and B groups. There was an 83% positively significant relationship between Ra and ΔE values (P<.01). Rough surfaces stained more after coffee immersion than did smooth surfaces. Conclusions: Surface treatments affected surface roughness and color stability. Smooth surfaces showed better color stability after discoloration. Ceramic staining may be related to surface texture changes after different surface treatments.

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the effect of surface treatments on optical, colorimetric, and surface characteristics of lithium disilicate glass-ceramic. Materials and methods: Specimens (n = 5, IPS e.max CAD) were randomly allocated to the following treatments: mirror-polished: SiC papers; as-cut: mimicking CAD-CAM milling; ground: 90-120 μm-grit diamond bur; ground polished: ground, finished (46-30 μm-grit diamond bur), polished (diamond cups, brush and diamond paste); ground glazed: ground, glazed; ground polished glazed: association of methods. CIELAB color coordinates were obtained by a spectrophotometer. CIEDE2000 color differences (ΔE00 ) and the translucency parameter (TP00 ) were calculated. Light transmittance was assessed with a colorimeter. Surface characteristics (topography and roughness) were analyzed. Statistical differences for each condition and outcome were detected using one-way ANOVA with Tukey's post-hoc test (α = 0.05). Results: TP00 data show statistical reduction after grinding (p < 0.05), which was only restored with polishing (solely or with glazing). ΔE00 shows that grinding results in perceptible variations in color (above 0.81), which were restored after all post-processing protocols (exception to only glaze application in contact with a black background). Light transmittance data corroborated such performance. Polishing and glazing reduced roughness and improved surface topography. Conclusion: Grinding statistically increased roughness, reduced translucency, light transmittance through the ceramic, and resulted on color differences. On contrary, polishing (followed or not by glazing) reduced roughness and enhanced ceramic translucency and light transmittance. Glaze also reduced roughness, but it still presented reduced translucency. The positioning (facing up or down) of the ceramic treated surface influenced the considered outcomes. Clinical significance: Grinding with diamond burs results in a deleterious impact to the optical, colorimetric and surface characteristics of lithium disilicate ceramic. Thus, polishing (followed or not by glazing) is recommended for optical and topographical enhancements when lithium disilicate monolithic restorations require occlusal adjustments.
Light transmittance and surface roughness of a feldspathic ceramic CAD-CAM material as a function of different surface treatments

Abstract:Background: The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of different surface treatments on light transmission of aesthetic feldspathic ceramics used in CAD-CAM chairside restorations. Methods: Forty eight feldspatic ceramic test specimens were prepared from prefabricated CAD-CAM blocks by using a slow speed diamond saw. Test specimens were prepared and divided into 4 groups (n = 12). In the control group, no surface treatments were applied on the feldspathic ceramic surfaces. In the hydrofluoric acid group, the bonding surfaces of feldspathic ceramics were etched with 9.5 % hydrofluoric acid. In the sandblasting group the feldspathic ceramic surfaces were air-abraded with 30-μm alumium oxide (Al2O3) particles and Er:YAG laser was used to irradiate the ceramic surfaces. The incident light power given by the LED device and the transmitted light power through each ceramic sample was registered using a digital LED radiometer device. Each polymerization light had a light guide with 8-mm-diameter tips. Light transmission of feldspathic ceramic samples was determined by placing it on the radiometer and irradiating the specimen for 10 s at the highest setting for each light polymerization. All specimens were coated with gold using a sputter coater and examined under a field emission scanning electron microscope. Surface roughness measurement each group were evaluated with 3D optical surface and tactile profilometers. Results: One-way ANOVA test results revealed that both surface conditioning method significantly affect the light transmittance (F:412.437; p < 0.001) and the surface roughness values (F:16.386; p < 0.001). Al2O3 and Er-YAG laser application reduced the light transmission significantly (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The laser and Al2O3 applications reduced the light transmission of 1.5 mm thickness feldspathic ceramic material below the value of 400 mW/cm(2) which is critical limit for safe polymerization.
