Abstract:Objectives To evaluate and compare the optical properties and relative translucency parameter of CAD-CAM restorative materials. Methods Four CAD-CAM materials were evaluated: Lava Ultimate (LU), Grandio Blocs (GB), VITA Enamic (VE), and VITA Mark II (VM). Disk-shaped samples in shade A2-HT were prepared (n = 10) and polished to 1.00 ± 0.01 mm of thickness. Scattering (S), absorption (K), albedo ( a ) coefficient, transmittance (T%), light reflectivity (RI), infinite optical thickness ( X ∞ ), and radiative transfer coefficients ( μ a , and μ ′ S ) were calculated using Kubelka-Munk method and Thennadil's semi-empirical approach. Root Mean Square Error ( RMSE ) and Goodness of Fit (GFC) were used as performance optical behavior. Translucency differences were evaluated using the relative translucency parameter (RTP 00 ) and 50:50 % translucency perceptibility and acceptability thresholds (TPT 00 and TAT 00 ). Results The spectral distribution of S, K, T%, RI, and X ∞ was wavelength-dependent. GFC and RMSE values indicated good spectral behavior matches and good comparative spectral values for RI in LU-GB, LU-VE, and GB-VE, and for K in VE-VM. VM displayed the highest scattering values across the wavelengths, while VE and VM showed lower absorption at shorter wavelengths. LU and GB had the highest transmittance. The X ∞ values indicated that all 1.0 mm thick materials could be influenced by the background. No good spectral match and no good comparative spectral values were found between CAD-CAM materials and anterior bovine maxillary specimens. VM had the lowest RTP 00 values with perceptible and unacceptable differences compared to CAD-CAM materials evaluated. Significance Understanding the optical behavior of different CAD-CAM materials was essential for guiding clinicians in material selection and optimizing their clinical performance. The findings confirm that the different compositions and microstructure impact the optical properties and translucency of CAD-CAM restorative materials.

Abstract:Statement of problem. Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) monolithic restorative materials have become a popular option because of advantages such as convenience and efficiency. However, studies that quantitatively analyzed their color accuracy and bias are lacking. Purpose. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the color accuracy and bias of 4 CAD-CAM monolithic restorative materials with different thicknesses by using the CIELab color space. Material and methods. Four types of dental CAD-CAM monolithic restorative materials in shade A2, lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (IPS e.max CAD), infiltrated ceramic (VITA Enamic), resin-nano ceramic (LAVA Ultimate), and polymethyl methacrylate (Telio CAD), were prepared as 12x12-mm specimens of 10 different thicknesses (from 0.5 to 5.0 mm) (N=200, n=5). After polishing with SiC P1500-grit, CIELab color coordinate parameters of the specimens were measured with a spectrophotometer (VITA Easyshade V). The color accuracy and bias were described by DE00, Delta L*, Delta a*, and Delta b* in the CIELab color space, and the data were analyzed by using a 2-way ANOVA, post hoc Tukey-Kramer test, and the t test (alpha=.05). Results. The DE00, Delta L*, Delta a*, and Delta b* were significantly influenced by material type and thickness (P<.001). Specimens at a thickness of 0.5 mm represented the maximum Delta E-00. The minimum Delta E-00 was observed at a thickness of 2.0 mm for LAVA Ultimate, 1.5 mm for VITA Enamic and Telio CAD, and 4.0 mm for IPS e.max CAD. The Delta E-00 of all specimens significantly exceeded the 50:50% acceptability threshold (1.8 unit) (P<.001). LU exhibited higher Delta E-00, Delta a*, and Delta b* than the other 3 materials in all thickness expect for 0.5 mm. For color bias, the Delta E-00 was more influenced by Delta b* and Delta L* than Delta a*. Conclusions. The color accuracy and bias were significantly affected by material type and thickness. The color inaccuracy of the tested materials was statistically significant and clinically perceptible. Improved clinical outcomes may be expected from the 1.5-mm- to 2.0-mm-thick restorations.

Abstract:Statement of problem The influence of different thicknesses, translucencies, and fabrication methods on the spectrophotometric and topographical properties of zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass-ceramics (ZLSs) for dental restorations remains unclear. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of thicknesses, translucencies, and fabrication methods on the color stability, translucency parameter, opalescence parameter, whiteness stability, transmitted irradiance, light transmittance, opacity, gloss, and roughness of ZLSs exposed to coffee staining and bleaching treatments. Material and methods Two pressable ZLSs (VITA AMBRIA, VA and Celtra Press, CP) and 2 machinable ZLSs (VITA Suprinity, VS and Celtra Duo, CD) were examined at high translucency (HT) and low translucency (LT) levels in 2 thicknesses (n=160). The specimens were evaluated at baseline, after coffee staining, and after bleaching. The color stability (ΔE2000), translucency parameter (TP), opalescence parameter (OP), whiteness index (WI D ), and whiteness stability (ΔWI D ) were measured with a spectrophotometer. Transmitted irradiance (I t ), light transmission (T), and opacity (O) were obtained from a light-polymerizing unit and a polymerization light collection device. Roughness stability (ΔSa%) was determined with an optical profilometer, and gloss stability (ΔGU%) was recorded with a gloss meter. Data of ΔCIE2000, ΔWI D , ΔSa%, and ΔGU% were analyzed by 4-way ANOVA, and data of the TP, OP, WI D , I t , T, and O were analyzed by repeated 4-way ANOVA (α=.05). Results VS-HT exceeded the ΔCIE2000 acceptability threshold after coffee staining and bleaching protocols. Pressable ZLSs exhibited greater color stability than machinable ZLSs. The 1-mm-thick VA, CP, and CD materials exceeded the ΔWI D perceptibility threshold after bleaching. The highest TP and OP was displayed by the 1-mm-thick CP after bleaching. ΔGU increased after water storage and decreased after coffee staining and bleaching. ΔSa% significantly increased after bleaching ( P <.05). Conclusions The color stability and other spectrophotometric properties of ZLSs depended on material thickness. The effects of ZLS fabrication methods and translucency levels on their measured properties were inconsistent. Subjecting 1-mm-thick ZLS materials to acidic media adversely impacted their stainability and surface texture.

Abstract:Statement of problem. Computer -aided design and computer -aided manufacturing (CAD -CAM) monochromatic restorative materials are gaining popularity because of their convenience and efficiency. However, studies that quantitatively analyzed color change associated with thickness and surface roughness are sparse. Purpose. The purpose of this in vitro study was to quantitatively evaluate the color of 6 CAD -CAM monochromatic materials of different thickness and surface roughness using the CIELab color system. Material and methods. A total of 150 12x12 -mm square specimens of 6 different CAD -CAM monochromatic materials (VITA Enamic HT [VE], IPS e.max CAD HT [LS], LAVA Ultimate HT [LU], Telio CAD HT [TE], VITA Suprinity HT [VS], and Celtra Duo HT [CD]) in shade A2 and 5 different thicknesses (from 0.5 mm to 2.5 mm, with 0.5 -mm increments) were fabricated (n=5). After 3 different surface treatments (polished, roughened by SiC P800 -grit, and P300 -grit), CIELab color parameters (L*, a* and b*) were measured using a spectrophotometer (VITA Easyshade V), and surface roughness was measured with a profilometer (VK-X200). Color variation was quantified by Delta E00 and 50:50% acceptability and perceptibly thresholds. Data analyses were performed using MANOVA, 2 -way ANOVA, post hoc Tukey-Kramer test, and the 1 -sample t test (alpha=.05). Results. The L*, a*, and b* of the monochromatic specimens were significantly influenced by material type, thickness, and surface roughness (P<.001). An overall increase in the L* (from 61.90 to 82.2), a* (from -4.22 to 1.16), and b* (from 5.48 to 43.22) of the specimens was observed with increased thickness. The roughened specimens exhibited lower L* and higher a* and b* than the polished ones (P<.001). The use of P300 -grit for roughening resulted in greater Delta E00 compared with P800 -grit (P<.001). As thickness decreased or surface roughness increased, the Delta E00 increased and exceeded the acceptability and perceptibly thresholds for color difference. Conclusions. Material type, thickness, and surface roughness were major factors affecting the color of CAD -CAM monochromatic materials. Variations in thickness of 0.5 mm or more, as well as roughening treatments, may lead to clinically unacceptable color changes.
Ribbed Mussels and Spartina Alterniflora Production in a New England Salt Marsh

Abstract:The ribbed mussel, Geukensia demissa, is commonly found associated with the salt marsh cordgrass, Spartina alterniflora. Mussels attach to the basal portion of S. alterniflora stems with strong proteinaceous byssal threads and deposit fecal material on the surrounding sediment as a byproduct of their filter-feeding activity. Here I demonstrate by manipulating mussel densities in the field that the presence of G. demissa stimulates S. alterniflora growth, and examine experimentally a number of potential mechanisms of this facilitation. In the natural habitat, mussel density is positively correlated with increased grass height, biomass, and flowering, and experimental removal and addition of mussels in these habitats demonstrates that mussels stimulate both aboveground and belowground S. alterniflora production. In tall-form S. alterniflora habitat, net primary production is positively correlated with mussel density and soil nitrogen levels. Experiments in this habitat show that mussels increase soil nitrogen, and this increase in nutrients would appear to be responsible for stimulating S. alterniflora growth. On the seaward edge of the marsh, net primary production is strongly correlated with mussel density, but not soil nutrients. On the marsh edge, mussels are shown to bind sediments and prevent erosion and physical disturbance. The relationship between S. alterniflora and G. demissa appears to represent a facultative mu- tualism that leads to increased marsh net primary production and stability. While previous research has shown that S. alterniflora production increases G. demissa growth and reproductive success, G. demissa also has strong stimulating effects on S. alterniflora. Nonconsumer plant-animal interactions such as the G. demissa-S. alterniflora association are potentially important determinants of marsh growth, stability, and community structure that have not been previously appreciated.
Effects of Substrate and Cement Shade on the Translucency and Color of CAD/CAM Lithium-Disilicate and Zirconia Ceramic Materials

Abstract:The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effects of substrate and cement shades on the translucency and color of lithium-disilicate and zirconia CAD/CAM materials. Two light-cured resin cements (RelyX Veneer Cement; 3M; Choice 2 Veneer Cement; Bisco Dental) with a standardized thickness (0.1 mm) were tested in combination with two different monolithic CAD/CAM materials (E-Max CAD (LI2SI2O5); Ivoclar Vivadent; Katana (ZrO2); Kuraray-Noritake Dental) on two different colored composite substrates used as a dentin (Filtek Supreme XTE; 3M); for a total of 12 combinations (n = 10). The specimens’ color was measured with a spectrophotometer (Spectroshade; MHT). Measurements were taken using the CIELAB color coordinate system (L*a*b*) against black and white backgrounds. L*a*b* values were statistically analyzed for the variables Substrate, Ceramic, and Cement by applying a Three-Way ANOVA followed by the Tukey Test for post-hoc comparison (p < 0.05). Translucency Parameter (TP) and Constant Ratio (CR) were assessed to evaluate translucency; acceptability and perceptibility thresholds (ΔE00 1.8 and 0.8) were used. Statistically significant influence was found for factors ceramic material, cement shade, and substrate color (p < 0.05). Unacceptable color differences were reported for Li2Si2O5. Opacity was significantly higher when white opaque cement shade was employed. Ceramic type and cement shade significantly influenced L*a*b* color coordinates. The final translucency and color of ceramic restorations can, therefore, be influenced by ceramic material, cement shade, and substrate color.

Abstract:Statement of problem The influence of different firing protocols on the topographical, optical, and mechanical properties of fully crystallized computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) lithium silicate-based glass-ceramics (LSCs) for dental restorations remains unclear. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of different firing regimens on the surface roughness, gloss, Martens hardness, indentation modulus, biaxial flexural strength, and crystalline structure of fully crystallized CAD-CAM LSCs and the effect of their interposition on the irradiance of a light-polymerization unit. Material and methods Three fully crystallized CAD-CAM LSC blocks were evaluated (N=150): lithium disilicate (Initial LiSi Blocks; LS), zirconia-reinforced silicate (Celtra Duo; CD), and lithium aluminum disilicate (CEREC Tessera; CT). Specimens were allocated to 5 subgroups according to their firing protocol. LSC roughness (Sa) was measured with an optical profilometer, and gloss (GU) was detected with a gloss meter. Martens hardness (HM) and indentation modulus (E IT ) data were obtained from a hardness testing machine. The irradiance of a light-polymerization unit and transmittance of LSCs were measured with an instrument (Managing Accurate Resin Curing-Light Collector; BlueLight analytics, Inc) subsequent to ceramic interposition. Crystalline phases were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, and biaxial flexural strength (σ) was determined by the ball-on-3-ball method in a universal testing machine followed by Weibull analysis to calculate characteristic strength (σ 0 ) and Weibull modulus (m). Two-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD post hoc tests (α=.05) were used to analyze the data. Results Statistically significant differences were found among different treatment groups based on Sa, GU, HM, and E IT values ( P <.001). Delivered irradiance was significantly reduced following CT ( P <.01) and glazed LSC ( P <.005) interposition. CD displayed highest biaxial flexural strength and reliability after 1 firing cycle (σ=568.2 MPa, m=16.8) Conclusions The type of material and firing regimens had a significant effect on the topographical, optical, and mechanical properties of fully crystallized CAD-CAM LSCs. Glazing significantly reduced delivered irradiance, Martens hardness, and biaxial flexural strength.

Effects of Surface Treatment and Shade on the Color, Translucency, and Surface Roughness of High-Translucency Self-Glazed Zirconia Materials

Abstract:Statement of problem. The impact of different surface treatments and shades on the color, translucency, and surface roughness of high-translucency self-glazed zirconia materials is unclear. Purpose. The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effects of different external surface treatments (self-glazed, milled, polished, and glazed), intaglio surface treatments (milled and airborne-particle abraded), and shades (A1 and A3 shades) on the color, translucency, and surface roughness of high-translucency self-glazed zirconia materials, as well as the correlations among optical parameters, translucency, and surface roughness. Material and methods. Eighty shade A1 and 80 shade A3 disks were fabricated with a thickness of 0.80 +/- 0.02 mm and divided into 16 groups (n=10). Different external and intaglio surface treatments were applied to the specimens. CIELab values were measured with a spectrophotometer, and color differences (Delta E-00) and relative translucency parameter (RTP) were calculated. Total transmittance (Tt%) and reflectance (R%) were tested with a spectrophotometer equipped with an integrating sphere. Surface roughness (Ra and Rz) (mu m) was measured with a noncontact 3-dimensional laser scanning microscope. One specimen from each group was subjected to scanning electron microscope (SEM) examination. Data were analyzed with ANOVA and the Tukey post hoc test. The correlation among optical parameters, translucency, and surface roughness was investigated by using Pearson correlation analysis (alpha=.05). Results. The effects of external surface treatments, intaglio airborne-particle abrasion, and shades on Delta E-00, RTP, and Ra values of the disks were significantly different (P<.001). The smoothest external polishing surface had the greatest RTP and color difference (P<.001). Shade A3 disks had lower RTP and Tt% values than shade A1 disks (P<.001). Delta E-00 had a highly positive relationship with the RTP (A1: r=0.884, P<.001; A3: r=0.859, P<.001). SEM images demonstrated that surface treatments affected the surface texture of monolithic zirconia ceramics. Conclusions. Different surface treatments affected the surface roughness, translucency, and final color of zirconia materials. The smoothest external polishing surface had the greatest RTP and color difference. Different shades influenced the translucency, as the darker the disk shade, the lower the translucency. The RTP was appropriate as an auxiliary indicator for evaluating the color of a dental ceramic.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate translucency of zirconia lithium silicate and lithium disilicate glass ceramic with different thicknesses, pre and post cementation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 120 Specimens of the current study were fabricated out of the two tested materials each counting N=60, A1 (translucent) shades of zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass ceramic (ZLS, Vita Suprinity, Vita Zahnfabrik, Germany) and A1(translucent) lithium disilicate glass ceramics (Rosetta SM, Korea). Specimens had a uniform rectangular shape with standard dimensions of 15 mm length and 10 mm width. Specimens of each material groups were distributed into three main groups based of specimen’s thickness 0.5mm, 1mm, 1.5mm each of these groups were further distributed into two subgroups based on translucency testing timing before or after cementation each counting 10 specimens. Specimens were fabricated by sectioning the ceramic blocks using a precision saw (IsoMet 4000, Buehler) under copious water coolant. Specimens final dimensions were confirmed with digital caliper. SPECTRO UV-Vis-Double BEAM spectrophotometer with an integrating sphere was used to evaluate the total transmittance of light as a percentage (Tt%) at a wavelength of 532 nm for comparison among groups. RESULTS: In the present study, translucency values at 0.5mm and 1 mm thicknesses LDS were higher than those recorded for ZLS at the same thicknesses. While with 1.5 mm thick specimens the translucencies of both ZLS and LDS materials were fairly similar. CONCLUSIONS: From the outcome of the current study, the following conclusions could be drawn out 1. The thinner the ceramic veneering layer, the greater will be the impact of the underlying shade on the final shade of the restoration. 2. The translucency values recorded for the translucent zirconia materials were not only almost close to those of the lithium disilicate ceramic material, but also comparable to the translucency values reported for enamel or dentin of similar thicknesses.
Effect of different surface treatments on optical, colorimetric, and surface characteristics of a lithium disilicate glass-ceramic

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the effect of surface treatments on optical, colorimetric, and surface characteristics of lithium disilicate glass-ceramic. Materials and methods: Specimens (n = 5, IPS e.max CAD) were randomly allocated to the following treatments: mirror-polished: SiC papers; as-cut: mimicking CAD-CAM milling; ground: 90-120 μm-grit diamond bur; ground polished: ground, finished (46-30 μm-grit diamond bur), polished (diamond cups, brush and diamond paste); ground glazed: ground, glazed; ground polished glazed: association of methods. CIELAB color coordinates were obtained by a spectrophotometer. CIEDE2000 color differences (ΔE00 ) and the translucency parameter (TP00 ) were calculated. Light transmittance was assessed with a colorimeter. Surface characteristics (topography and roughness) were analyzed. Statistical differences for each condition and outcome were detected using one-way ANOVA with Tukey's post-hoc test (α = 0.05). Results: TP00 data show statistical reduction after grinding (p < 0.05), which was only restored with polishing (solely or with glazing). ΔE00 shows that grinding results in perceptible variations in color (above 0.81), which were restored after all post-processing protocols (exception to only glaze application in contact with a black background). Light transmittance data corroborated such performance. Polishing and glazing reduced roughness and improved surface topography. Conclusion: Grinding statistically increased roughness, reduced translucency, light transmittance through the ceramic, and resulted on color differences. On contrary, polishing (followed or not by glazing) reduced roughness and enhanced ceramic translucency and light transmittance. Glaze also reduced roughness, but it still presented reduced translucency. The positioning (facing up or down) of the ceramic treated surface influenced the considered outcomes. Clinical significance: Grinding with diamond burs results in a deleterious impact to the optical, colorimetric and surface characteristics of lithium disilicate ceramic. Thus, polishing (followed or not by glazing) is recommended for optical and topographical enhancements when lithium disilicate monolithic restorations require occlusal adjustments.

Abstract:Newly hatched zebrafish (Brachydanio rerio) were exposed to eight compounds of selenium to establish their relative toxicities. The compounds examined included the organoselenides of methionine and cystine, the inorganic selenite salts of sodium and potassium, selenium dioxide, and the inorganic selenate salts of calcium, sodium, and potassium. The selenite compounds were more toxic to zebrafish than the selenates; the 96-h concentrations lethal to 50% of the fish ranged from 15 to 23 μg/ml for the selenites and from 81 to 82 μg/ml for potassium and sodium selenate. The limited solubility of selenocystine and the significant losses of selenomethionine from the test solutions did not allow comparable estimates to be made for the selenides. These differences in toxicity between the selenites and selenates were also demonstrated when selenium levels required to produce a 5% mortality at the end of the 10-day observation period were estimated. Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Full-contour (monolithic) zirconia restorations are gaining in popularity. High translucent zirconia materials and multilayered zirconia blocks might help to overcome the aesthetic drawbacks of traditional zirconia for fabrication of monolithic restorations OBJECTIVES: Were to evaluate the biaxial flexural strength and translucency of CAD/CAM: multichromatic ultra-translucent zirconia and comparing it with multichromatic high translucency Lithium Disilicate glass-ceramic. MATERIALS AND METHODS40 ceramic specimens were divided into two main groups; Group I: CAD/CAM multichromatic ultratranslucent Zirconia( UTML KATANA Zirconia) & Group II: Pressable multichromatic high translucent Lithium Disilicate glass-ceramic (e.max press multi). Each group was subdivided into two sub groups; sub group A: disc specimens (12mm diameter×1.5mm thickness) were fabricated (n=10) & thermocycled (500 cycles, 5°/55°C, 15 sec dwell time).Then, biaxial flexural strength was measured in MPa. Sub group B: rectangular specimens (12mm length × 10mm width × 1.5mm thickness) were fabricated (n=10). Spectrophotometric analysis was conducted to evaluate and compare the degree of translucency by translucency parameter (TP). Data were analyzed using student t-test & ANOVA with repeated measures test. RESULTS Statistical analysis of Biaxial flexural strength using student t-test revealed that group I (607.24 ± 71.79) showed higher statistically significant biaxial flexural strength values than group II (290.69 ± 41.19) ( p <0.001*). Results of translucency revealed that there were significant statistical differences between the two subgroups where IPS e.max Press Multi provided better translucency than UTML KATANA zirconia. CONCLUSIONS: Multi layered zirconia showed higher mechanical, but lower optical properties than lithium disilicate. The multi layered zirconia showed four layers with different light transmittance capabilities. It might therefore be useful for enhancing the aesthetic appearance of full-contour zirconia restorations made from this material in stress bearing areas.
Translucency and Strength of Lithium Disilicate for Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing at Different Thermal Temperatures and Thicknesses: An In Vitro Study

Abstract:To manufacture dental restorations composed of lithium disilicate (LD) through the computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) process, thermal refinement is an essential process that can affect the optical and mechanical properties of ceramics. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the translucency and flexural strength of lithium disilicate glass-ceramic for CAD/CAM using different thermal refinement schedules and thicknesses by measuring the total transmission of light through the specimen and calculating the peak load of the specimen until fracture in a piston-on-three-ball test, respectively. The results showed that a lower translucency was exhibited in thicker specimens, and the flexural strength decreased in the order of 1.0, 0.5, and 2.0 mm (p < 0.05). The lithium disilicates thermally refined at a heat of 820 degrees were shown to have the highest biaxial flexural strength (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that it is possible to adjust transparency and strength according to the clinical situation by choosing an appropriate thickness and thermal refinement process.
Effect of Thermocycling, Surface Treatments and Microstructure on the Optical Properties and Roughness of CAD-CAM and Heat-Pressed Glass Ceramics

Abstract:Dental ceramic restorations are widely spread nowadays due to their aesthetics and biocompatibility. In time, the colour and structure of these ceramic materials can be altered by aging processes. How does artificial aging affect the optical and surface roughness of ceramics? This study aims to assess the effect of thermocycling, surface treatments and microstructure upon translucency, opalescence and surface roughness on CAD-CAM and heat-pressed glass-ceramic. Forty-eight samples (1.5 mm thickness) were fabricated from six types of A2 MT ceramic: heat-pressed and milled glass-ceramic (feldspathic, lithium disilicate and zirconia reinforced lithium silicate). The samples were obtained respecting the manufacturer’s instructions. The resulted surfaces (n = 96) were half glazed and half polished. The samples were subjected to thermocycling (10,000 cycles) and roughness values (Ra and Rz), colour coordinates (L*, a*, b*) and microstructural analyses were assessed before and after thermocycling. Translucency (TP) and opalescence (OP) were calculated. Values were statistically analysed using ANOVA test (one way). TP and OP values were significantly different between heat-pressed and milled ceramics before and also after thermocycling (p < 0.001). Surface treatments (glazing and polishing) had a significant effect on TP and OP and surface roughness (p < 0.05). The heat-pressed and milled zirconia reinforced lithium silicate glass-ceramic experienced a loss in TP and OP. Ra and Rz increased for the glazed samples, TP and OP decreased for all the samples after thermocycling. Microstructural analyse revealed that glazed surfaces were more affected by the thermocycling and especially for the zirconia reinforced lithium silicate ceramic. Optical properties and surface roughness of the chosen ceramic materials were affected by thermocycling, surface treatments and microstructural differences. The least affected of the ceramics was the lithium disilicate ceramic heat-pressed polished and glazed.

Translucency of chairside monolithic zirconias using different sintering ovens: An in vitro investigation

Abstract:Objective : To evaluate the translucency of several monolithic zirconias (MZ) processed in various sintering ovens designed for single-visit, chairside use. Methods : Discs (n=40) from zirconia blocks were fabricated for each MZ at manufacturer-recommended minimal thicknesses, as provided in each material's instructions for use: IPS e.max ZirCAD LT (ZLT); CEREC Zirconia+ (CZ+); 3M Chairside (3M); KATANA Zirconia (KT). Groups (n=10) were sintered following manufacturer instructions for each oven: CEREC SpeedFire, Ivoclar CS4, Ivoclar CS6, and Ivoclar S2 (laboratory furnace control). Specimens were highly polished on one side and glazed on the other. Each side was measured with a spectrophotometer against white and black backgrounds to determine translucency parameter (TP) and contrast ratio (CR) values. Results for TP and CR for each material and oven combination were compared with a linear mixed model. Oven precision was evaluated using the Kruskall-Wallis test. Results : Glazed specimens were more translucent than polished ones (p < 0.001). ZLT and CZ+ were more translucent than 3M and KT regardless of the sintering oven (p < 0.01). Several oven/material combinations reached or exceeded the S2 oven TP: CS4 with CZ+ and 3M; CS6 with ZLT and KT (p < 0.01). SpeedFire was significantly less precise (p < 0.05) and produced lower TP values for ZLT, CZ+, and KT (p < 0.01). Results for TP and CR were highly correlated. Conclusions : MZ surface finish, material thickness, and oven used all had a significant effect on translucency. Some chairside-oriented solutions produced results with translucency equal to conventionally processed zirconia. Clinical Significance : The translucency of a ceramic restoration is an important factor in determining its esthetics. Clinicians desiring the most esthetic outcomes with monolithic zirconia should be aware of the significant effects; surface finishing, material thickness, and sintering oven use can have on restoration translucency.

Abstract:The surface roughness (Ra) of indirect computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM)-fabricated dental restorations is crucial for their long-term durability. This study intended to evaluate the Ra of five different types of contemporary indirect CAD/CAM restorative materials with varying compositions that were glazed and finished/polished. A total of 75 specimens, disc-shaped (10 mm × 2 mm), were obtained from five materials (n = 15) (Tetric CAD, IPS e.max CAD, IPS e.max ZirCAD, CELTRA Duo, and Vita Enamic) and fabricated by CAD/CAM. One of the two surfaces for each specimen was subjected to glazing, while the other surface was subjected to finishing/polishing. The Ra of the two surfaces in micrometers (μm) was evaluated using a Profilometer, while the surface topography was examined using a scanning electron microscope. Using SPSS, the Kruskal–Wallis, post hoc Conover, and Mann–Whitney tests were used to statistically evaluate the data. A comparison of the Ra for the finished/polished surfaces of the five test materials showed significant differences (p < 0.0001). Among the finished/polished surfaces, the mean rank values of Vita Enamic were significantly higher than the other four test materials (p < 0.0001). A comparison of the Ra of glazed surfaces among the five study materials revealed significant differences (p < 0.0001). The Ra for the IPS e.max ZirCAD material was significantly higher than the rest of the four materials (p < 0.001). A comparison of the Ra for two types of surface conditioning within each of the five test materials showed a significant difference (p < 0.05). Only for IPS e.max ZirCAD was the Ra of the glazed surface significantly higher than the finished/polished surface (p < 0.0001). Significant variations in the surface roughness (Ra) were exhibited between the finished/polished and glazed surfaces of the five test materials. Hybrid ceramics showed the highest Ra values for the finished/polished surfaces, and zirconia exhibited the highest Ra values among the glazed surfaces among the tested materials. The Ra values of either finished/polished or glazed surfaces of the test materials were within the clinically acceptable range (0.2–0.5 μm), except for the glazed surface of the zirconia ceramics (0.84 μm).

Abstract:Background: The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of different surface treatments on light transmission of aesthetic feldspathic ceramics used in CAD-CAM chairside restorations. Methods: Forty eight feldspatic ceramic test specimens were prepared from prefabricated CAD-CAM blocks by using a slow speed diamond saw. Test specimens were prepared and divided into 4 groups (n = 12). In the control group, no surface treatments were applied on the feldspathic ceramic surfaces. In the hydrofluoric acid group, the bonding surfaces of feldspathic ceramics were etched with 9.5 % hydrofluoric acid. In the sandblasting group the feldspathic ceramic surfaces were air-abraded with 30-μm alumium oxide (Al2O3) particles and Er:YAG laser was used to irradiate the ceramic surfaces. The incident light power given by the LED device and the transmitted light power through each ceramic sample was registered using a digital LED radiometer device. Each polymerization light had a light guide with 8-mm-diameter tips. Light transmission of feldspathic ceramic samples was determined by placing it on the radiometer and irradiating the specimen for 10 s at the highest setting for each light polymerization. All specimens were coated with gold using a sputter coater and examined under a field emission scanning electron microscope. Surface roughness measurement each group were evaluated with 3D optical surface and tactile profilometers. Results: One-way ANOVA test results revealed that both surface conditioning method significantly affect the light transmittance (F:412.437; p < 0.001) and the surface roughness values (F:16.386; p < 0.001). Al2O3 and Er-YAG laser application reduced the light transmission significantly (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The laser and Al2O3 applications reduced the light transmission of 1.5 mm thickness feldspathic ceramic material below the value of 400 mW/cm(2) which is critical limit for safe polymerization.
Effects of polishing press-on force on surface roughness and gloss of CAD-CAM composites

Abstract:Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of polishing press-on force on surface roughness and gloss of computer-aided design-computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) composites. Methods: The materials evaluated included a CAD-CAM ceramic, a polymer-infiltrated ceramic, and three filler-based CAD-CAM composites. The CAD-CAM blocks were sectioned, embedded in self-cured resin, finished with abrasive papers and ultrasonically cleaned. Specimens were subsequently polished using the Sof-Lex disk system with 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 N press-on force by means of a custom-made apparatus. Contour arithmetic mean deviation (Ra) and gloss value (GU) data were acquired with a profilometer and glossmeter, respectively, and analyzed using ANOVA/Bonferroni post hoc test and Pearson's correlation (α = 0.05). Representative samples of the various materials at baseline and after each polishing step were examined under scanning electron microscope. Results: Mean Ra and GU values ranged from 0.096 ± 0.004 μm to 0.295 ± 0.045 μm and 13.4 ± 1.9 to 67.6 ± 11.3 correspondingly for the various material-force combinations. Surface roughness and gloss were found to be press-on force and material dependent. A moderately strong and negative correlation (rs = -0.69) existed between Ra and GU values. Conclusion: For optimal smoothness and gloss, ceramic and polymer-infiltrated ceramic CAD-CAM materials must be polished with a 2.0 N force, while filler-based CAD-CAM composites should, in general, be polished using a 1.0 to 1.5 N force.
