Abstract:This paper is based on the “Fast Pneumatic Mesh Driver” (FPN) used to couple a silicone rubber soft body with a rigid skeleton. A rigid-flexible coupling soft-body human-like finger design scheme is proposed to solve the problem of low load on the soft-body gripping hand. The second-order Yeoh model is used to establish the statics model of the soft humanoid finger, and the ABAQUS simulation analysis software is used for correction and comparison to verify the feasibility of the soft humanoid finger bending. The thickness of the driver cavity and the confining strain layer were determined by finite element simulation. The mold casting process is used to complete the preparation of human-like fingers and design a pneumatic control system for experiments combined with 3D printing technology. The experimental results show that the proposed rigid-flexible coupling soft body imitating the human finger structure can realize the corresponding actions, such as the multi-joint bending and side swinging, of human fingers. Compared with the traditional pure soft-body finger, the fingertip output force is significantly improved. The optimal design and simulation analysis of the human gripper and the feasibility of the application have practical guiding significance.

Abstract:Electrohydraulic actuators are widely used in industrial applications due to high efficiency and easy of control. This paper proposes the concept of electrohydraulic soft actuator (EHSA) system for robotic grippers. The system consists of one or multiple bending soft actuators, a piston hydraulic pump, and an electrical motor with ball screw mechanism. Each soft actuator has two hydraulic chambers which enable bidirectional bending deformation. The two ports of the hydraulic pump are connected to the two chambers of the soft actuators so as to form closed circuits. The characteristics of the fluidic soft actuators are modeled and identified at two different load conditions, one of which is that the actuators are operated in free space, and the other is that the actuators touch objects. The effectiveness of the model is verified by experimental results with the assumption that the bending angle of the fluidic soft actuators is relatively small. Based on the model, an estimator is designed to obtain the contact force between the actuators and the objects. Finally, closed-loop force control for the actuators is realized by taking the estimate as feedback information. It is shown that the force control has good dynamical response and acceptable steady error.

Abstract:This work presents a lightweight soft rehabilitation glove that integrates finger and wrist function by developing and applying the double-DOF soft pneumatic bending actuators (DPBAs). The proposed soft glove can achieve separate as well as coordinated motion exercises of fingers and the wrist, which benefits stroke patients who have complicated hand impairment. It consists of a commercial glove extended by a customized wrist bracer, on which are installed three dorsal DPBAs through fingers (index/middle/ring) and the wrist, two dorsal single-DOF pneumatic bending actuators (SPBAs) through thumb/pinky, and three palmar SPBAs through wrist. The proposed DPBA has two independent bendable segments to actuate flexion of finger and wrist, respectively, whose multigait bending conforms with multipattern flexion of the biological hand. The SPBAs are used for actuating wrist extension or finger flexion. The proposed wrist bracer is designed as an extension of the glove to install the soft actuators and transfer their motion and force to the wearer's wrist efficiently as well as minimize unactuated restriction on the hand. To verify its feasibility, we evaluate the range of motion (ROM), strength and speed of five subjects' hands assisted by the glove in six different passive motions. Results show that the proposed glove can provide sufficient assistance for stroke patients in hand rehabilitation exercise. Furthermore, the soft glove has potential in extending the hand functional training from simple exercises such as closing/opening and gripping to complex ones such as weightlifting, writing, and screwing/unscrewing.

Abstract:Soft pneumatic actuators/robotics have received significant interest in the medical and health fields, due to their intrinsic elasticity and simple control strategies for enabling desired interactions. However, current soft hand pneumatic exoskeletons often exhibit uniform deformation, mismatch the profile of the interacting objects, and seldom quantify the assistive effects during activities of daily life (ADL), such as extension angle and predicted joint stiffness. The lack of quantification poses challenges to the effective and sustainable advancement of rehabilitation technology. This paper introduces the design, modeling, and testing of pneumatic bioinspired segmented composite proprioceptive bending actuators (SCPBAs) for hand rehabilitation in ADL tasks. Inspired by human finger anatomy, the actuator's soft-joint-rigid-bone segmented structure provides a superior fit compared to continuous structures in traditional fiber-reinforced actuators (FRAs). A quasi-static model is established to predict the bending angles based on geometric parameters. Quantitative evaluations of predicted joint stiffness and extension angle utilizing proprioceptive bending are performed. Additionally, a soft under-actuated hand exoskeleton equipped with SCPBAs demonstrates their potential in ADL rehabilitation scenarios.

Abstract:Soft actuators and robotic devices have been increasingly applied to the field of rehabilitation and assistance, where safe human and machine interaction is of particular importance. Compared with their widely used rigid counterparts, soft actuators and robotic devices can provide a range of significant advantages; these include safe interaction, a range of complex motions, ease of fabrication, and resilience to a variety of environments. In recent decades, significant effort has been invested in the development of soft rehabilitation and assistive devices for improving a range of medical treatments and quality of life. This review provides an overview of the current state‐of‐the‐art in soft actuators and robotic devices for rehabilitation and assistance, in particular systems that achieve actuation by pneumatic and hydraulic fluid‐power, electrical motors, chemical reactions, and soft active materials such as dielectric elastomers, shape memory alloys, magnetoactive elastomers, liquid crystal elastomers, and piezoelectric materials. Current research on soft rehabilitation and assistive devices is in its infancy, and new device designs and control strategies for improved performance and safe human–machine interaction are identified as particularly untapped areas of research. Finally, insights into future research directions are outlined.

Abstract:Studies have developed various types of soft robotic gloves for hand rehabilitation in recent years. Most soft actuators achieved a sufficient thumb flexion assist while lacking opposition support, which requires the coordination of thumb flexion and abduction-adduction. The difficulties for thumb support lie in the intrinsic complexity of thumb movements and spatial restriction of the hand. To realize multiple degrees of freedom of the thumb and make effective use of the limited space of the hand's dorsal side, we optimized and compared two approaches for thumb support. The combination approach used two independent soft actuators for thumb flexion and abduction-adduction support, respectively. The all-in-one approach used one single soft actuator to assist motions in different directions. We designed the soft actuators for each approach based on the thumb's biomechanical characteristics and evaluated their thumb flexion, abduction support performance in terms of the range of motion (RoM) and force output, and the opposition support performance using an enhanced Kapandji test. The results showed a larger abduction RoM and force output of the composition approach and a higher Kapandji score of the all-in-one approach, indicating that the two approaches might be applicable for thumb support but have the advantage in different rehabilitation stages.

Abstract:Traditional rigid robots exist many problems in rehabilitation training. Soft robotics is conducive to breaking the limitations of rigid robots. This paper presents a soft wearable device for the rehabilitation of hands, including soft pneumatic actuators that are embedded in the device for motion assistance. The key feature of this design is the stiffness of each actuator at different positions is different, which results in the bending posture of the actuator is more accordant with the bending figure of human hand. In addition, another key point is the use of a fabric sleeves allow actuators to gain greater bending force when pressurized, which gives the hand greater bending force. We verified the feasibility of actuator through simulation, the performance of soft actuator and the device also are evaluated through experiments. Finally, the results show that this device can finish some of the hand rehabilitation tasks.

Abstract:Fiber-reinforced soft actuators have great potential for the development of wearable technology. However, its complex structural design, nonlinear soft material body, fluid-driven dynamics and high manufacturing costs have brought huge challenges to system modeling, control and application. To improve this situation, a novel fiber-reinforced soft actuator is designed and analyzed. First, a wearable hand rehabilitation device based on fiber-reinforced soft actuators with three-air-chamber structure is designed. Next, using Yeoh model and principle of virtual work, we establish a bending mathematical model of the soft actuator, whose input parameters are air pressure $P$ and winding number $N$, and output parameter is bending angle $eta$. Finally, through the finite element analysis, the optimal $N$ is obtained, and the correctness of the model is verified. Additionally, the rehabilitation device is fabricated by using Kevlar fiber, silicone rubber and 3D printing. To verify the above research, an experimental platform is constructed. The results show that the relative error of the modelw is in an acceptable state. The device can imitate common gestures, produce a maximum fingertip force of 0.61 N, easily grasp objects with a volume of 1.6 $dm^{3}$ and mass of 335.7 g, which can realize the hand rehabilitation training.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the design and modeling of a hydraulic soft actuator which can perform space motion with multiple degrees of freedom (DOF). The cylinder soft actuator made of elastomer has three fiber-reinforced hydraulic chambers distributed symmetrically. By controlling the pressure vector in the chambers, the motion of the soft actuator can be expressed by three independent variables including axial elongation, bending angle, and azimuth angle. This paper firstly presents the actuation principle, structural design, and fabrication method of the soft actuator. Secondly, the relationship between the input pressure and the axial length of the chamber is derived by taking the nonlinear deformation behavior of the elastomer into account, which is seldom considered in the state of the art. Thirdly, the kinematics of the soft actuator is modeled to predict the coordinates of its tip position with the piecewise constant-curvature (PCC) assumption. Finally, an experimental platform is set up and a series of experiments are implemented to identify some parameters which are difficult to be quantified analytically as well as to validate the developed model. The results show that the measured data are in good accordance with the predicted data. In addition, a model-based open-loop control experiment is carried out to realize the path following.

Abstract:Soft actuators developed for hand rehabilitation show promise, but their practical application requires addressing individual differences and establishing suitable design rules. While joint modular soft actuators offer flexibility for diverse hand dimensions, existing performance validations have only examined a limited number of actuator sizes and neglected crucial factors like joint alignment. Customization efforts have lacked standardization, relying on a trial-and-error approach. Therefore, this study systematically evaluates the impact of actuator design parameters (size and mounting position) on joint range of motion (ROM) and torque, proposing novel design rules based on linear optimization. Experimental assessments, conducted on dummy fingers emulating human biomechanics, provide profound insights into the intricate interplay of design parameters and support performance. The findings strongly advocate maintaining a reference position for stable support, irrespective of actuator size, emphasizing the need to align the actuator with the joint center. The proposed design rules incorporate user-specific finger information, offering customized design rules. Proportionate actuator lengths to single-phalangeal length (PsPL), Proportionate actuator lengths to multi-phalangeal length (PmPL), Proportionate actuator lengths to Range of Motion (PROM), and the Traditional Method are systematically compared. Assistive performances (ROM and torque) and trajectory analysis reveal that the PsPL-designed actuator exhibits the most stable and natural assistive performance. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding actuator deformations for personalized adaptation, providing valuable insights for advancements in assistive and rehabilitative technologies.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the design of a soft wearable exoskeleton that comprises of a glove embedded with pneumatic actuators of variable stiffness for hand assistive and rehabilitation application. The device is lightweight and easily wearable due to the usage of soft pneumatic actuators. A key feature of the device is the variable stiffness of the actuators at different localities that not only conform to the finger profile during actuation, but also provides customizability for different hand dimensions. The actuators can achieve different bending profiles with variable stiffness implemented at different localities. Therefore, the device is able to perform different hand therapy exercises such as full fist, straight fist, hook fist and table top. The device was characterized in terms of its range of motion and maximum force output. Experiments were conducted to examine the differences between active and passive actuation. The results showed that the device could achieve hand grasping and pinching with acceptable range of motion and force.

Abstract:In the research and development of soft rehabilitation gloves (SRGs), individualized support considering users' morphological and biomechanical characteristics is the next critical step toward use in rehabilitation practice. Compared with single-structure soft actuators for a whole finger, which require redesigning for each user, modular soft actuators enable the support for each joint by adjusting rigid connectors that are easier to fabricate. Several modular actuators have been developed, however, neither the effect of interaction between soft actuators and fingers nor the functionality of a hand under the support of an SRG has been appropriately evaluated. In this study, we proposed a new modular soft actuator that improved the support performance with enlarged chambers and fiber reinforcement. Moreover, we made an SRG with the proposed actuators and conducted an objective evaluation for the range of motion (ROM), torque, and response time of both actuators and the SRG with a dummy finger and hand. Furthermore, the Kapandji test, a clinical evaluation of the thumb's opposition, was performed to show the performance of the proposed actuators and the SRG. As a result, the new modular soft actuators showed better support performance, and the SRG can support multiple grasping profiles and enable the thumb's opposition. This work moves one step toward applying soft robotics to rehabilitation.

Abstract:According to clinical studies, upper limb robotic suits are vital to reduce therapist fatigue and accelerate patient rehabilitation. Soft pneumatic actuators have drawn increasing attention for the development of wearable robots due to their low weight, flexibility, and high power-to-weight ratio. However, most of current actuators were designed for the flexion assistance of a specific joint, and that for joint extension requires further investigation. Furthermore, designing an actuator for diverse working scenarios remains a challenge. In this paper, we propose an all-fabric bi-directional actuator to assist the flexion and extension of the elbow, wrist, and fingers. A mathematical model is presented that predicts the deformation and guides the design of the proposed bi-directional actuator. To further validate the applicability and adaptability of the proposed actuator for different joints, we developed a 3-DOF soft robotic suit. Preliminary results show that the robotic suit can assist the motion of the elbow, wrist, and finger of the subject.

Abstract:Background: The hand motor function is lost and activities in daily life (ADLs) are affected due to some illnesses such as stroke and hemiplegia. As a coping way, we present a wearable rehabilitation glove with the bionic actuator for restoring the hand function and the motor control ability lost by stroke patients. Methods: The soft pneumatic bionic actuator (SPBA) is developed on the basis of the research of human hand bone structure and finger joint characteristics and a series of tests are conducted. Besides, we built the rehabilitation glove system based on the proposed SPBAs to verify the availability due to typical gesture, mirror therapy (MT) and grasping experiment for irregular objects. Result: The bending angle of SPBA can reach 260°. The output force of it can reach 5.1N with 0.25 MPa air pressure input. The maximum variance of the bending angle can be concluded at 5.1° in MT. The grasping experiments of the glove worn on the hand or not shows the proposed glove is flexible, the grip force is large and achieve stable grasping of objects. Conclusion: The designed SPBA is satisfied with the requirements of rehabilitation training and the proposed glove restore the normal hand motion of patients in ADLs.

Abstract:Herein, a novel double‐acting soft actuator that provides both tendon‐driven flexion and pneumatic‐driven extension of fingers by a single motor is introduced. The extension actuator placed on the dorsum of the finger is driven by the compressing bellow actuation. The finger flexion angle and speed are directly controlled by a motor. Pneumatic and tendon‐driven actuators are widely used in soft robotic glove design. Tendon‐driven robotic gloves are generally better in controllability, dexterity, and force output, but they are less comfortable than pneumatic ones. Most soft gloves focus on only one actuation mode where either motor‐driven tendon or pump‐driven pneumatic transmission is used. Herein, a double‐acting soft actuator (DASA) that provides both tendon‐driven flexion and pneumatic extension of fingers by a single motor is presented. This is achieved by a smart pulley and bellow system. The kinematic model of the tendon‐driven flexion and the torque model of the fabric‐based pneumatic extension actuator (FPEA) are developed to analyze the DASA performance. The bending angle of the index finger actuated by the tendon and the FPEA extension torque of a joint are characterized by experimental studies. A cycle test of the DASA is conducted 3000 times, demonstrating its high repeatability. A prototype soft glove (68 g) based on the proposed DASA with a control box (835 g) is fabricated to demonstrate finger flexion and extension assistance. Based on electromyography signals, the performance of the robotic glove is evaluated by a squeezing sponge test.

Abstract:Inspired by the morphology of human finger, this study proposed a pneumatic network actuator for soft robotics gripper with rigid-flexible coupling and stepped chamber structure to improve the grasp stability and strength under low air pressure. The actuator adopts a segmented structure and has two independent chambers that can be driven, respectively. The distal segment of the soft actuator adopted a stepped chamber structure with a varying height which mimicked the shape of a human fingertip like a cone to increase the contact area between the object and the soft actuator. The proximal segment of the soft actuator utilizes the rigid-flexible coupling structure which draws inspiration from the interlacing of the ligaments and bones of human finger to enhance the output force of existing pneumatic network actuators. First of all, the structure of the pneumatic network actuator, the distal segment, the proximal segment, and the restriction layer structure were designed through theoretical derivations and finite element simulations. The response surface methodology was then utilized to optimize the dimensional aspects of the soft actuator's structure to further improve the performance of the actuator. Then, a prototype was fabricated based on the optimization results, and experiments were performed to assess the bending angles and output forces, which can reach 244.26°and 3.25 N, respectively. Finally, utilizing the soft actuator, two-finger and three-finger grippers were assembled, which are able to effectively grasp various objects in different grasping modes. These grippers exhibit advantages such as a sufficiently large contact area, high output force, reliable grasping, strong adaptability, and a wide range of grasping capabilities.

Abstract:Abstract In order to help hand dysfunction people to rehabilitate hand muscles and train hand muscles, we designed and developed a wearable rehabilitation equipment glove. First, we collected data from a sample hand and fitted its motion trajectory. Through analysis and comparison, we decided to use the linkage mechanism as the actuator and pneumatic drive as the driving method. In order to ensure flexibility, accuracy and stability, we designed and optimized the number and position of the connecting rods. Finally, we will get a set of rods that can simulate the movement of the fingers, and use springs to increase the flexibility of the mechanism. We studied the rigidity of the mechanism and determined the material of the device. After obtaining the model, we will perform a static analysis on the final state of the finger to ensure the safety of the device.

Abstract:Fluidic and tendon driven actuators are widely applied in soft robotic hand design. Fluidic actuated soft robotic hands are highly compliant and can adapt to various objects. Tendon driven soft robotic hands are easier to control and have high dexterity and large force output, however, they are less compliant than fluidic actuated ones. Most robotic hands are designed with only one actuation method. Combining both actuation methods can tap the advantages and make up each other's limitations but at the expense of more complicated design and control. In this research, we propose a simple dual-mode actuator that provides both fluidic and tendon actuation. The two actuation modes are achieved simultaneously by twisting an elastic tube filled with gas, liquid, or even a combination. The soft robotic finger, designed as a fluidic elastomer actuator (FEA), is actuated by the fluid displaced from tube twisting, as well as by the tendon due to tube contraction in twisting. The tendon drives a compliant metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint of the finger in order to provide a large bending angle and bending force to finger. Compared to an FEA soft finger, the proposed design can effectively increase the bending angle up to 150 (from 170 degrees to 260 degrees), and the blocking force up to 134 (from 3.2N to 4.3N). A soft robotic hand prototype with dual-mode actuators design is made for various grasping demonstrations.

Abstract:Textile fabrics are compliant, lightweight, and inherently anisotropic, making them promising for the design of soft pneumatic actuators. In this article, we present the design, modeling, and evaluation of a class of soft fabric-based pneumatic actuators (SFPAs) for soft wearable assistive gloves that can simultaneously assist the thumb abduction and finger flexion and extension motions for brachial plexus injury patients. We investigate the mechanical behaviors of various woven fabrics and rib weft-knitted fabric structures, guiding us to design a thumb-abduction SFPA, a finger-flexion SFPA, and a finger-extension SFPA. We further develop a mathematical model to evaluate the influence of the geometric parameters on the blocked tip forces of the finger-flexion SFPAs and extension torques of the finger-extension SFPAs, which are also verified by the experimental results. We then integrate our SFPAs into a soft wearable assistive glove with a portable control system. The glove is finally tested on a healthy volunteer and a brachial plexus injury patient. The clinical evaluation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our designed glove in assisting hand motions and grasping tasks.

Abstract:Thanks to their continuously deformable features, soft bending actuators, including pneumatic and electric actuators, are increasingly used in continuum robots. Further development, however, is limited by the complexity of the multicavity structure in pneumatic actuators and the instability of the electromechanical coupling in dielectric elastomer actuators. In this article, by combining the advantages of the two actuation techniques, a novel hybrid electro-pneumatic bending actuator is proposed that is capable of bending with significantly reduced complexity and improved stability. A timing control method is proposed that enables rapid and significant bending. A low voltage is used for bending guidance with air-pressure concurrently to produce a large bending stroke. The results of experiments indicate that, with increasing air pressure, the bending angle varies in three different stages. These stages are (I) a low-pressure guidance stage, (II) an instability induction stage, and (III) a stable deformation stage. By harnessing the instability at stage II, the driving voltage can be substantially reduced to avoid electric breakdown. By studying the effect of prestretch on bending, the controllability of the bending deformation is improved. The simulation is also used to verify the control method and predict the development path of soft robots.
