Abstract:Levitated optomechanics is the combination of optomechanics and quantum optics. It provides a new quantum method to control and measure micro-nano mechanical oscillator. This method has unprecedented observation accuracy, can approach or even break the standard quantum limit, and has broad development and application prospects. At present, the system has been used to measure the force, torque, displacement, acceleration and other physical parameters with high sensitivity at room temperature. In this paper, the research status of levitated optomechanics and its progress in precision sensing and measurement are reviewed. As a frontier technology developed in recent years, levitated optomechanics has gradually moved from basic research to application, especially in the field of inertial sensing and precision measurement. Finally, suggestions for developing the inertial sensing disruptive technology based on levitated optomechanics are put forward, which can provide reference for the development planning of inertial sensing and quantum precision measurement technology.

Abstract:Oscillators based on levitated particles are promising for the development of ultrasensitive force detectors. The theoretical performance of levitated nanomechanical sensors is usually characterized by the so-called thermal noise limit force detection sensitivity, which does not exhibit spectral specificity in practical measurements. To characterize the actual detection performance, we propose a method for the force detection sensitivity calibration of a levitated nanomechanical sensor based on the harmonic Coulomb force. Utilizing the measured transfer function, we obtained the force detection sensitivity spectrum from the position spectrum. Although the thermal noise limit force detection sensitivity of the system reached (4.39±0.62)×10−20N/Hz1/2 at 2.4×10−6mbar with feedback cooling, the measured sensitivity away from the resonance was of the order of 10−17N/Hz1/2 based on the existing detection noise level. The calibration method established in our study is applicable to the performance evaluation of any optical levitation system for high-sensitivity force measurements.

Abstract:Highly sensitive and compact microforce sensors with piconewton-level resolution are essential in various fields. However, these sensors face the challenge of delicate fabrication, expensive instruments, and complicated signal processing. Here, we report an ultrasensitive microforce sensor with a nanonewton-scale working range and piconewton-level resolution (picobalance) using a 500 nm diameter U-shaped silica optical nanofiber (ONF) as the cantilever beam and a gold microflake as the sample tray. The ONF can detect its deflection upon microforce by monitoring the change of its transmittance, making it a self-detection picobalance with a linear response to microforce in the range of 0-11.2 nN based on theoretical calculation. Benefiting from the extremely low spring constant of the ONF (e.g., 0.15 mN/m), the picobalance achieves a force resolution of 3.3 pN in an experiment measuring the radiation pressure. As proof-of-concept demonstrations, measuring nanogram-level microparticles and radiation pressure are realized. We believe that this easy-to-use picobalance has great potential for biological sensing, biomechanical research, and environmental monitoring.
Ultrasensitive charge detection utilizing coupled nonlinear micromechanical resonators

Abstract: Since the discovery of electrons, an accurate detection of electrical charges has been the dream of scientific community. Due to some remarkable advantages, micro/nano-electromechanical systems (M/NEMS) based resonators have been used to design electrometers with exquisite sensitivity and resolution. Inevitably, some limits including requisite ultra-low environmental temperature, complicated resonator structure and measurement circuit, required linear dynamic response, will cause a gap with respect to practical application. Here, we demonstrate a novel ultra-sensitive charge detection based on the linear dependence of peak frequency drift on the coupling voltage variation of two coupled nonlinear micromechanical resonators. We achieved ultra-high resolution of 2.051E-3 fC (about 13 electrons) of charge detection at the room temperature. We also show an extra application of this device for weak and ultra-low-frequency (ULF) signal detection. Our findings provide a simple strategy for measuring electron charges in an extreme accuracy and developing electrometers in smaller sizes.
Zeptonewton force sensing with nanospheres in an optical lattice

Abstract:Optically trapped nanospheres in high-vaccum experience little friction and hence are promising for ultra-sensitive force detection. Here we demonstrate measurement times exceeding $10^5$ seconds and zeptonewton force sensitivity with laser-cooled silica nanospheres trapped in an optical lattice. The sensitivity achieved exceeds that of conventional room-temperature solid-state force sensors, and enables a variety of applications including electric field sensing, inertial sensing, and gravimetry. The optical potential allows the particle to be confined in a number of possible trapping sites, with precise localization at the anti-nodes of the optical standing wave. By studying the motion of a particle which has been moved to an adjacent trapping site, the known spacing of the lattice anti-nodes can be used to calibrate the displacement spectrum of the particle. Finally, we study the dependence of the trap stability and lifetime on the laser intensity and gas pressure, and examine the heating rate of the particle in high vacuum in the absence of optical feedback cooling.

Abstract:Using light as a probe to detect a mechanical motion is one of the most successful experimental approaches in physics. The history of mechanical sensing based on the reflection, refraction and scattering of light dates back to the 16th century, where in the Cavendish experiment, the angle of rotation induced by the gravitational force is measured by the deflection of a light beam reflected from a mirror attached to the suspension. In modern science, mechano-optical transducers are such devices that could detect, measure and convert a force or displacement signal to an optical one, and are widely used for force detection. Especially, ultraweak force sensor with ultrahigh spatial resolution is highly demanded for detecting force anomaly in surface science, biomolecule imaging, and atomtronics. Here we show a novel scheme using a single trapped ion as a mechano-optical transduction. This method utilizes the force-induced micromotion, converting the micromotion to a time-resolved fluorescence signal, in which the ion's excess micromotion coupled to the Doppler shift of the scattered photons. We demonstrate the measurement sensitivity about 600 $\textrm{zN}/\sqrt{\textrm{Hz}}$ (1 $\textrm{zN} =10^{-21}$N). By alternating the detection laser beam in all three dimensions, the amplitude and the direction of a vector force can be precisely determined, constituting a 3D force sensor. This mechano-optical transducer provides high sensitivity with spatial resolution in single-atom level, enabling the applications in material industry and the search for possible exotic spin-dependent interactions that beyond the standard model.

Abstract:Miniaturized mechanical resonators have proven to be excellent force sensors. However, they usually rely on resonant sensing schemes, and their excellent performance cannot be utilized for the detection of static forces. Here, we report on a novel static-force sensing scheme and demonstrate it using optically levitated nanoparticles in vacuum. Our technique relies on an off-resonant interaction of the particle with a weak static force, and a resonant read-out of the displacement caused by this interaction. We demonstrate a force sensitivity of $10\,\mathrm{aN}$ to static gravitational and electric forces acting on the particle. Our work not only provides a tool for the closer investigation of short-range forces, but also marks an important step towards the realization of matter-wave interferometry with macroscopic objects.

Abstract:Torque sensors such as the torsion balance enabled the first determination of the gravitational constant by Henri Cavendish<a href="/articles/s41565-019-0605-9#ref-CR1">1</a> and the discovery of Coulomb's law. Torque sensors are also widely used in studying small-scale magnetism<a href="/articles/s41565-019-0605-9#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="/articles/s41565-019-0605-9#ref-CR3">3</a>, the Casimir effect<a href="/articles/s41565-019-0605-9#ref-CR4">4</a> and other applications<a href="/articles/s41565-019-0605-9#ref-CR5">5</a>. Great effort has been made to improve the torque detection sensitivity by nanofabrication and cryogenic cooling. Until now, the most sensitive torque sensor has achieved a remarkable sensitivity of 2.9 × 10−24 N m Hz−1/2 at millikelvin temperatures in a dilution refrigerator<a href="/articles/s41565-019-0605-9#ref-CR6">6</a>. Here, we show a torque sensor reaching sensitivity of (4.2 ± 1.2) × 10−27 N m Hz−1/2 at room temperature. It is created by an optically levitated nanoparticle in vacuum. Our system does not require complex nanofabrication. Moreover, we drive a nanoparticle to rotate at a record high speed beyond 5 GHz (300 billion r.p.m.). Our calculations show that this system will be able to detect the long sought after vacuum friction<a href="#ref-CR7">7</a>,<a href="#ref-CR8">8</a>,<a href="#ref-CR9">9</a>,<a href="/articles/s41565-019-0605-9#ref-CR10">10</a> near a surface under realistic conditions. The optically levitated nanorotor will also have applications in studying nanoscale magnetism<a href="/articles/s41565-019-0605-9#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="/articles/s41565-019-0605-9#ref-CR3">3</a> and the quantum geometric phase<a href="/articles/s41565-019-0605-9#ref-CR11">11</a>.

Abstract:We report the development of an ultrasensitive optomechanical sensor designed to improve the accuracy and precision of force measurements with atomic force microscopy. The sensors reach quality factors of 4.3 × 106 and force resolution on the femtonewton scale at room temperature. Self-calibration of the sensor is accomplished using radiation pressure to create a reference force. Self-calibration enables in situ calibration of the sensor in extreme environments, such as cryogenic ultra-high vacuum. The senor technology presents a viable route to force measurements at the atomic scale with uncertainties below the percent level.

Abstract:High-precision sensing of vectorial forces has broad impact on both fundamental research and technological applications such as the examination of vacuum fluctuations and the detection of surface roughness of nanostructures. Recent years have witnessed much progress on sensing alternating electromagnetic forces for the rapidly advancing quantum technology-orders of magnitude improvement has been accomplished on the detection sensitivity with atomic sensors, whereas such high-precision measurements for static electromagnetic forces have rarely been demonstrated. Here, based on quantum atomic matter waves confined by a two-dimensional optical lattice, we perform precision measurement of static electromagnetic forces by imaging coherent wave mechanics in the reciprocal space. The lattice confinement causes a decoupling between real-space and reciprocal dynamics, and provides a rigid coordinate frame for calibrating the wavevector accumulation of the matter wave. With that we achieve a state-of-the-art sensitivity of 2.30(8)×10-26 N/Hz. Long-term stabilities on the order of 10-28 N are observed in the two spatial components of a force, which allows probing atomic Van der Waals forces at one millimeter distance. As a further illustrative application, we use our atomic sensor to calibrate the control precision of an alternating electromagnetic force applied in the experiment. Future developments of this method hold promise for delivering unprecedented atom-based quantum force sensing technologies.
Quantum Lock-in Force Sensing using Optical Clock Doppler Velocimetry

Abstract:Force sensors are at the heart of different technologies such as atomic force microscopy or inertial sensing \cite{RMPforce2003, Rugar2004, YazdiIEEE}. These sensors often rely on the measurement of the displacement amplitude of mechanical oscillators under applied force. Examples for such mechanical oscillators include micro-fabricated cantilevers \cite{YazdiIEEE}, carbon nanotubes \cite{NanotubeForce} as well as single trapped ions \cite{Bollinger, Udem} . The best sensitivity is typically achieved when the force is alternating at the mechanical resonance frequency of the oscillator thus increasing its response by the mechanical quality factor. The measurement of low-frequency forces, that are below resonance, is a more difficult task as the resulting oscillation amplitudes are significantly lower. Here we use a single trapped $^{88}Sr^{+}$ ion as a force sensor. The ion is trapped in a linear harmonic trap, and is electrically driven at a frequency much lower than the trap resonance frequency. To be able to measure the small amplitude of motion we combine two powerful techniques. The force magnitude is determined by the measured periodic Doppler shift of an atomic optical clock transition and the Quantum Lock-in technique is used to coherently accumulate the phases acquired during different force half-cycles. We demonstrate force detection both when the oscillating force is phase-synchronized with the quantum lock-in sequence and when it is asynchronous and report frequency force detection sensitivity as low as $5.3\times10^{-19}\frac{\mathrm{N}}{\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}}$ .

A hybrid on-chip opto-nanomechanical transducer for ultra-sensitive force measurements

Abstract:Nanomechanical oscillators have been employed as transducers to measure force, mass and charge with high sensitivity. They are also used in opto- or electromechanical experiments with the goal of quantum control and phenomena of mechanical systems. Here, we report the realization and operation of a hybrid monolithically integrated transducer system consisting of a high-$Q$ nanomechanical oscillator with modes in the MHz regime coupled to the near-field of a high-$Q$ optical whispering-gallery-mode microresonator. The transducer system enables a sensitive resolution of the nanomechanical beam's thermal motion with a signal-to-noise of five orders of magnitude and has a force sensitivity of $74\,\rm{aN}\,\rm{Hz}^{-1/2}$ at room temperature. We show, both theoretically and experimentally, that the sensitivity of continuous incoherent force detection improves only with the fourth root of the averaging time. Using dissipative feedback based on radiation pressure enabled control, we explicitly demonstrate by detecting a weak incoherent force that this constraint can be significantly relaxed. We achieve a more than 30-fold reduction in averaging time with our hybrid transducer and are able to detect an incoherent force having a force spectral density as small as $15\,\rm{aN}\,\rm{Hz}^{-1/2}$ within $35\,\rm{s}$ of averaging. This corresponds to a signal which is 25 times smaller than the thermal noise and would otherwise remain out of reach. The reported monolithic platform is an enabling step towards hybrid nanomechanical transducers relying on the light-mechanics interface.

Abstract:A microfiber biconically tapered from a standard optical fiber shows obvious sinusoidal oscillatory transmission spectrum due to the multimode interference, with evident blue-shifted peak wavelength when applying an axial force. Based on this force-induced spectral shift, here we experimentally demonstrate compact microfiber strain and force sensors with low optical power and high sensitivity. With a 1.5-μW probing light, measured sensitivity of a 2.5-μm-diameter microfiber for the strain and elongation sensing are 4.84pm/με and 404pm/μm respectively, with a force detection limit down to 50μN.

Abstract:Nanomechanical measurements, especially the detection of weak contact forces, play a vital role in many fields, such as material science, micromanipulation, and mechanobiology. However, it remains a challenging task to realize the measurement of ultraweak force levels as low as nanonewtons with a simple sensing configuration. In this work, an ultrasensitive all-fiber nanonewton force sensor structure based on a single-mode–tapered U-shape multimode–single-mode fiber probe is proposed and experimentally demonstrated with a limit of detection of ~5.4 nanonewtons. The use of the sensor is demonstrated by force measurement on a human hair sample to determine the spring constant of the hair. The results agree well with measurements using an atomic force microscope for the spring constant of the hair. Compared with other force sensors based on optical fiber in the literature, the proposed all-fiber force sensor provides a substantial advancement in the minimum detectable force possible, with the advantages of a simple configuration, ease of fabrication, and low cost.

Short-range force detection using optically-cooled levitated microspheres

Abstract:We propose an experiment using optically trapped and cooled dielectric microspheres for the detection of short-range forces. The center-of-mass motion of a microsphere trapped in vacuum can experience extremely low dissipation and quality factors of $10^{12}$, leading to yoctonewton force sensitivity. Trapping the sphere in an optical field enables positioning at less than 1 $\mu$m from a surface, a regime where exotic new forces may exist. We expect that the proposed system could advance the search for non-Newtonian gravity forces via an enhanced sensitivity of $10^5-10^7$ over current experiments at the 1 $\mu$m length scale. Moreover, our system may be useful for characterizing other short-range physics such as Casimir forces.

Abstract:Levitated mechanical oscillator in high vacuum is supposed to be an ideal system for sensing weak force, and diamagnetic levitated oscillator is recently developed with typical working frequency in 1Hz to 100Hz range, especially, diamagnetic levitation is fully passive and suitable for cryogenic condition operation, we will introduce the realization of cryogenic diamagnetic levitation where ultra-low mechanical dissipation is observed, we also introduce a lens-free detection scheme that can applied to detecting oscillator of sub-millimeter size which can be used for acceleration sensing, we finally give examples of application of diamagnetic levitation to the problem of wave function collapse and dark matter particle.
Attonewton force detection using microspheres in a dual-beam optical trap in high vacuum

Abstract:We describe the implementation of laser-cooled silica microspheres as force sensors in a dual-beam optical dipole trap in high vacuum. Using this system we have demonstrated trap lifetimes exceeding several days, attonewton force detection capability, and wide tunability in trapping and cooling parameters. Measurements have been performed with charged and neutral beads to calibrate the sensitivity of the detector. This work establishes the suitability of dual beam optical dipole traps for precision force measurement in high vacuum with long averaging times, and enables future applications including the study of gravitational inverse square law violations at short range, Casimir forces, acceleration sensing, and quantum opto-mechanics.

A single-atom 3D sub-attonewton force sensor

Abstract:All physical interactions are mediated by forces. Ultra-sensitive force measurements are therefore a crucial tool for investigating the fundamental physics of magnetic, atomic, quantum, and surface phenomena. Laser cooled trapped atomic ions are a well controlled quantum system and a standard platform for precision metrology. Their low mass, strong Coulomb interaction, and readily detectable fluorescence signal make trapped ions favourable for performing high-sensitivity force measurements. Here we demonstrate a three-dimensional sub-attonewton sensitivity force sensor based on super-resolution imaging of the fluorescence from a single laser cooled $^{174}$Yb$^+$ ion in a Paul trap. The force is detected by measuring the net ion displacement with nanometer precision, and does not rely on mechanical oscillation. Observed sensitivities were 372$\pm$9$_\mbox{stat}$, 347$\pm$12$_\mbox{sys}\pm$14$_\mbox{stat}$, and 808$\pm$29$_\mbox{sys}\pm$42$_\mbox{stat}$ zN/$\sqrt{\mbox{Hz}}$ in the three dimensions, corresponding to 24x, 87x, and 21x of the quantum limit. We independently verified the accuracy of this apparatus by measuring a light pressure force of 95 zN on the ion, an important systematic effect in any optically based force sensor. This technique can be applied for sensing DC or low frequency forces external to the trap or internally from a co-trapped biomolecule or nanoparticle.

Abstract:Since the advent of atomic force microscopy1, mechanical resonators have been used to study a wide variety of phenomena, including the dynamics of individual electron spins2, persistent currents in normal metal rings3 and the Casimir force4,5. Key to these experiments is the ability to measure weak forces. Here, we report on force sensing experiments with a sensitivity of 12 zN Hz−1/2 at a temperature of 1.2 K using a resonator made of a carbon nanotube. An ultrasensitive method based on cross-correlated electrical noise measurements, in combination with parametric downconversion, is used to detect the low-amplitude vibrations of the nanotube induced by weak forces. The force sensitivity is quantified by applying a known capacitive force. This detection method also allows us to measure the Brownian vibrations of the nanotube down to cryogenic temperatures. Force sensing with nanotube resonators offers new opportunities for detecting and manipulating individual nuclear spins as well as for magnetometry measurements.

Abstract:Levitated oscillators of millimeter or submillimeter size are particularly attractive due to their potential role in studying various fundamental problems and practical applications. One of the crucial issues towards these goals is to achieve efficient measurements of oscillator motion, although this remains a challenge. Here we theoretically propose a lens-free optical detection scheme, which can be used to detect the motion of a millimeter or submillimeter levitated oscillator with a measurement efficiency close to the standard quantum limit with a modest optical power. We demonstrate experimentally this scheme on a 0.5-mmdiameter microsphere that is diamagnetically levitated under high vacuum and room temperature, and the thermal motion is detected with high precision. Based on this system, an estimated acceleration sensitivity of 9.7 x 10-10 g/v/Hz is achieved, which is an improvement of more than 1 order of magnitude over the best value reported for a levitated mechanical system. Due to the stability of the system, the minimum resolved acceleration of 3.5 x 10-12 g is reached with measurement times of 105 s. This result is expected to have potential applications in the study of exotic interactions in the millimeter or submillimeter range and the realization of compact gravimeters and accelerometers.
