Abstract:The effects of deep cryogenic cycling treatment (DCT) on the rejuvenation and room-temperature compressive properties of a TiZrHfBeCu high-entropy bulk metallic glass (HE-BMG) were studied. After DCT, the fully amorphous structure of TiZrHfBeCu HE-BMG remained, but the relaxation enthalpy showed obvious rejuvenation behavior. Upon increasing the number of cycles, the room-temperature plasticity of TiZrHfBeCu HE-BMG gradually increased from 0.62% to 5.38%, with no obvious change in the yield strength. The hardness and density of the high-entropy amorphous alloy decreased with the number of DCT cycles. The DCT-induced rejuvenation and plasticization mechanisms were explained based on the shear transformation zone (STZ) model. The effects of high mixing entropy and fragility on the rejuvenation behavior were also considered. This work confirmed that DCT is an effective method for the rejuvenation and plasticization of TiZrHfBeCu HE-BMG.

Abstract:Preparing bulk metallic glass composites (BMGCs) is an effective way to improve the plasticity of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). However, the enhancement of plasticity is usually at the cost of deterioration in strength. In this study, a series of BMGCs with the nominal composition of Zr 48 Cu 48 Al 4 was prepared. Finely dispersed B2 CuZr crystals are embedded in a glassy matrix and subsequently, these composites were cryogenically cycled in liquid nitrogen followed by heating to various temperatures below the glass transition temperature. It was found that the samples after cryogenic thermal cycling (CTC) treated at an intermediate upper temperature shown a simultaneous improvement of yielding strength from 1680 MPa to 1832 MPa and plasticity from 5.6% to 9.1%. The enhancement of yielding strength is ascribed to the existence of the B19′ phase resulted from the partial martensitic transformation during the CTC treatment, while the improvement of plasticity is attributed to the higher free volume content and the larger "blocking effect" from the B19' after the samples were treated by CTC. The combination of CTC treatment and precipitation of crystals provides a new strategy for improving the mechanical properties of the BMGs.

Abstract:In this paper, effects of cryogenic thermal cycling on deformation behavior and thermal stability of the Zr46Cu46Al8 bulk metallic glass (BMG) were studied. The results show that with the increase of the number of cryogenic thermal cycles (CTC), thermal stability remains almost unchanged, while the plasticity is increased, indicating that the cryogenic thermal cyclic treatment is an effective way to improve plasticity of metallic glasses without distinctly deteriorating thermal stability. Our analysis suggests that the increase in the defect density resulted from the cryogenic thermal treatments are responsible for the plasticity increment. Variation of yield strength can be well interpreted from microstructural percolation which affected by both density and characteristic volume of the defect sites.

Abstract:Cryogenic thermal cycling (CTC) treatment is a simple and effective technique to rejuvenate metallic glasses (MGs). However, how the structural heterogeneities of MGs are influenced by CTC is still a problem. In this study, the effects of CTC on mechanical properties and thermal responses of as-cast and as-deformed Zr-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) were investigated. Due to the existence of shear bands and their affected zones, the deformed BMG presents greater sensitivity to the CTC treatment, and its softening effect first increases and then saturates with the number of cycles.

Abstract:The effect of cryogenic cycling treatments on the thermal and mechanical properties of a Ti-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) composite was investigated. Even though the macroscopic structures of the dendrite-phase and glass-matrix remain unchanged, the treated samples exhibited a rejuvenation behavior in terms of a higher relaxation enthalpy, which leads to an enhancement of plasticity as high as 90%. Different from the monolithic BMGs, in which rejuvenation has been attributed to the nanoscale structural heterogeneity, rejuvenation in BMG composite is induced by the crystal/amorphous heterogeneous microstructures. The increasing defects around the interfaces may promote formation of multiple shear bands and accommodation of plastic deformation. This work shows clearly that the cryogenic cycling treatments could be an effective and controllable way to modulate mechanical properties of BMG composites.

Abstract:The wear resistance of Ti45Zr16Cu10Ni9Be20 bulk metallic glass with a deep cryogenic-cycling treatment (DCT) was studied here. The specimens showed increased plasticity and decreased hardness after DCT. The higher wear resistance could be achieved by sacrificing partial hardness in macroscopic wear tests. Morphological observation revealed that the wear mechanism changed from severe fatigue wear to mild ductile ploughing, and the oxidation wear played a mild role. Nano-scratch tests were applied to explore the adhesion and ploughing contributions under the ramping-constant load mode. The competition between the lower hardness and the higher elastic recovery results in the lower friction coefficient. Therefore, DCT has great potential in the application of designing wear-resistant BMGs.

Abstract:Cryogenic thermal cycling (CTC) can alter the energy states of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) and their composites (BMGCs), but the fundamental mechanisms of CTC and their effects on mechanical properties are largely remain elusive. Herein, the effects of CTC on structural evolution and impact toughness, a K , of Ti-based BMGCs containing β-Ti dendrites are investigated. It is found that either rejuvenation or relaxation alternately dominates the structural evolution of the glass matrix, causing a non-monotonic rejuvenation. At 298 K, a more rejuvenated state causes a synergistic toughening by both of the glass matrix and dendrites, and the a K variation trend of BMGCs is the same as the non-monotonic rejuvenation. However, at 77 K, the a K variation trend of BMGCs is just opposite as the non-monotonic rejuvenation of the glass matrix. The rejuvenation/relaxation during CTC are correlated with the impact toughness, which provides a basis for improving toughness of BMGCs by CTC.

Abstract:Effects of cryogenic thermal cycling (CTC) on mechanical properties and serrated flow of the Zr52.5Cu17.9Ni14.6Al10Ti5 bulk metallic glass were studied. The improved plasticity, a slightly reduced yield stress and abundant small serrations could be signs of rejuvenation. The high disorder degree result from rejuvenation increases the volume of shear transformation zones (STZs), and thus leads to the enhancement of plasticity. The larger plasticity of BMGs is realised through the superimposed effect of two favourable factors (CTC treatment and strain rate). In this case, the experimental failure threshold is far below the theoretical value. It provides a new idea for designing ductile BMGs.

Abstract:The rejuvenation behavior of a Zr 55 Cu 30 Ni 5 Al 10 (at.%) metallic glass upon deep cryogenic cycling treatment was investigated. The sample was rejuvenated to a larger extent with increasing cyclic number, resulting in a higher enthalpy of relaxation and a lower density. The rejuvenation seems to be saturated after 200 cycles, which may originate from the limited content of free volume in the amorphous structure. The sample subjected to a higher cyclic number showed a lower hardness and better plasticity due to a larger shear transformation zone (STZ) volume. In this case, a lower shear plane formation energy facilitates the generation of multiple shear bands. Furthermore, it is found that the content of free volume has linear relationship with the plastic strain and the STZ volume. The results from molecular dynamics simulation also demonstrates that the atomic volume saturates with a higher degree of rejuvenation at a higher cooling rate of the simulated sample.

Abstract:The effects of cryogenic thermal cycling on deformation behaviour and structural variation of{[(Fe0.5Co0.5)0.75B0.2Si0.05]96Nb4}99.9Cu0.1 bulk metallic glass(BMG)were studied and compared with Cu-free[(Fe0.5Co0.5)0.75B0.2Si0.05]96Nb4 BMG.After thermal-cycled treatment between 393 K and cryogenic temperature,the{[(Fe0.5Co0.5)0.75B0.2Si0.05]96Nb4}99.9Cu0.1 BMG obtained a plastic strain of 7.4％combined with a high yield strength of 4350 MPa.The excellent soft magnetic properties were maintained after CTC treatment.The minor addition of Cu element results in an initial nano-sized heterogeneity in the matrix,which facilitates the rejuvenation process during thermal cycling,and brings to a low optimal thermal temperature of 393 K,making the{[(Fe0.5Co0.5)0.75B0.2Si0.05]96Nb4}99.9Cu0.1 BMG more attractive in industrial application.During thermal cycling,the formation of more soft regions leads to the increase of structural heterogeneities,which is beneficial to the initiation of shear transition zones and the for-mation of multiple shear bands,and thus results in the enhancement of plasticity.This study links the subtle variation of specific structure with macroscopic mechanical properties,and provides a new insight of composition selection for cryogenic thermal cycling treatment.

Abstract:The influence of thermal treatment on the long-term mechanical properties of two different kinds of metallic glasses was investigated in this study. As model systems, bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) with the composition of Pd 43 Cu 27 Ni 10 P 20 cycled 60, 200, and 500 times between 77 K and room temperature and Zr 44 Ti 11 Cu 10 Ni 10 Be 25 cycled 300, 500, and 700 times have been employed. To ensure that meaningful steady-state properties have been reached, experiments have been performed three years after sample preparation. It was found that the thermal cycling of the Pd-based BMGs had induced rejuvenation when compared to the non-cycled sample, including a higher relaxation enthalpy, lower modulus, hardness, activation volume, and shear transformation zone volume. However, for Zr-BMGs, a rejuvenation to relaxation behavior is observed. Also, while Zr-BMGs showed significantly changes in yielding behavior upon thermal cycling, fluctuations in Pd-BMGs were negligible. We speculate that the observed substantial differences between these two samples might originate because Pd-BMG has a denser structure and higher fragility, making it more difficult to induce excess free volumes.

Abstract:Cryogenic thermal cycling (CTC) treatment is a promising technique to rejuvenate metallic glasses (MGs), but whose effect is usually highly dependent on the original structure. Spanning shear bands and nonspanning shear bands in deformed MGs not only have different structures, but also are situated in different strain fields, so their responses to CTC are expected to be different. In the present work, the structure, energy state, and property evolutions of the spanning and nonspanning shear bands in deformed MGs during the CTC process were investigated by experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. It was found that CTC increased the proportion of atoms with inelastic strain and induced a rejuvenation in the immature shear band zones that nevertheless led a relaxation in the mature shear band zones. Abstract:Tailoring the formation and distribution of loose-packing regions and dense-packing regions in the bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) has long been considered to facilitate macroscopic mechanical properties and break strength-ductility trade-off. Herein, studies on structural heterogeneity caused by the deep cryogenic treatment (DCT) were systematically carried out to not only probe the atomic-scale structure-property relationships but also further understand the deformation mechanisms involving improved plasticity without sacrificing strength on the basis of these experimental results in rejuvenated Zr-based BMGs. The internal stress due to the cooling contraction will activate the atomic motion in weakly bonded regions and meanwhile form perfect icosahedral short-range ordering (ISRO) via containing mobile atoms to become denser geometric configurations. The multiplication and propagation of shear bands are closely associated with their structural features originating from the optimization of perfect icosahedral ordered structures in the rejuvenated glassy matrix. It is believed that these findings are helpful to shed light on the correlations between atomic-scale structural heterogeneity and macroscopic mechanical properties and further provide new possibilities for the development of promising BMGs with strength-ductility synergy.

Effect of Thermal Cycling on the Mechanical Properties of Zr41ti14cu12.5ni10be22.5 Alloy

Abstract:The effect of thermal cycling treatment on mechanical properties and thermal stability of a Zr 41 Ti 14 Cu 12.5 Ni 10 Be 22.5 bulk metallic glass is investigated. The metallic glassy samples are sealed into quartz tubes under high vacuum condition, and liquid nitrogen together with electric furnace are used to control a periodical temperature variation between −196°C and 150°C. The structure and properties of the tested samples for different thermal cycles have been examined by X-ray diffraction analysis, mechanical properties measurement and thermal analysis. It has been found that the structure and properties of the samples do not show a significant change even after 200 cycles, which suggests Zr 41 Ti 14 Cu 12.5 Ni 10 Be 22.5 alloy as having potential in aerospace environment.

Abstract:The temperature dependence of strain and strain rate of the Zr41Ti14Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 (Vit1) bulk metallic glass (BMG) under constant heating condition was derived from the static extension method with a dynamic thermal mechanical analyzer (DMA). A few strain rate peaks, which corresponds to the glass transition and multistep crystallization in the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) examination, were observed in the curves of the relation between strain rate and temperature. The onset of viscous flow and the end of glass transition are interrelated, the first and second strain rate peaks correspond with the first and second crystallization transition processes, respectively. The influence of stress on strain and strain rate was researched. It is found that the rheological behaviour of BMG Vit1 changes from elasticity to anelasticity, finally to the Newtonian viscous flow along with increasing temperature.
The cryogenic mechanical property deviation of Ti-based bulk metallic glass composite induced by interstitial element

Abstract:Although most bulk metallic glass composites (BMGCs) will undergo ductile-to-brittle transition at cryogenic temperature, significant low temperature compression and tensile ductility have been found in a BMGC with the composition of Ti48Zr20Nb12Cu5Be15. In present work, the cryogenic mechanical behavior of BMGCs containing interstitial element was studied for understanding the multiple reinforcement of BMGCs in low temperature environment and for explaining the differences in cryogenic properties of BMGCs. Results show that the Ti-based BMGC will be much more sensitive to impurity elements in cryogenic environment than that at room temperature. Besides, the increase in yield strength of BMGCs with the decrease of temperature is not simply due to the dislocations motion in the dendrites becomes more difficult. Low temperature environment can strengthen the glassy matrix as well as increase the strength of dendrites. Results imply Ti48Zr20Nb12Cu5Be15 BMGC can be a kind of promising materials for low-temperature applications.

Abstract:The deformation behavior of metallic glasses has been shown in prior studies to be often dependent on its structural state, namely higher energy "rejuvenated" state versus lower energy "relaxed" state. Here, the deformation behavior of thermally rejuvenated Zr-Cu-Al-(Ti) bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) was evaluated. Rejuvenation was achieved by cryogenic thermal cycling with increase of free volume measured in terms of enthalpy of relaxation. Hardness, stiffness, and yield strength of the BMGs were all found to decrease while plasticity increased after rejuvenation. More free volume in the rejuvenated BMG resulted in homogeneous plastic deformation as was evident from the high strain rate sensitivity and more pronounced shear band multiplication during uniaxial compression. Shear transformation zone (STZ) volume was calculated by cooperative shear model and correlated well with the change in structural state after rejuvenation. The enhanced plasticity with the addition of 1 at. % Ti as well as after cryogenic thermal cycling was explained by lower activation energy for shear flow initiation due to increased heterogeneity induced in the system. Molecular dynamics simulation demonstrated that the variation in plastic deformation behavior is correlated with local atomic structure changes.

Abstract:Serration behavior serves as a pivotal link connecting micro-deformation mechanism to the mechanical properties of metallic glasses. To elucidate the impact of cryogenic thermal cycling (CTC) and compositional modifications on metallic glasses' serration behavior, a series of Zr-based metallic glasses, exhibiting a broad range of glass transition temperatures ( T g ), were meticulously manufactured. The stress drop magnitude initially decreases before the peak-rejuvenation induced by CTC, then gradually increases, while the number of stress drops exhibits an initial increase and then a decrease. These trends correlate with optimized plasticity of the metallic glasses. Remarkably, metallic glasses with lower T g predominantly undergo strain hardening during plastic deformation. They exhibit lower viscosity in shear band zones and stress drop compared to others, attributed to the temperature increase around shear band zones approaching T g . This phenomenon promotes shear band activation in smaller flow units, leading to finer serrations compared to glasses with higher T g .

Abstract:Optimized macroscopic tribological behavior can be anticipated in metallic glasses (MGs) by cryogenic cycling treatment (CCT), which is attributed to enhanced plasticity. However, the intrinsic friction mechanisms of MGs induced by cryogenic rejuvenation are still poorly understood. In the present study, nanoscopic wear tests were conducted on the Zr-based MGs surface with different CCT cycles using atomic force microscopy (AFM). After CCT treatment with 100 cycles, the MG displays the highest adhesion and ploughing frictions, but significantly improved anti-wear properties. Adhesion tests and molecular dynamics simulations disclose that the increased adhesion is attributed to the dominance of liquid-like regions in the CCT-treated MGs, and the impact of reduced hardness and weak elastic recovery results in the deteriorated ploughing friction. The enhanced plasticity effectively dissipates the strain from the AFM tip through multiple shear bands and weakens the adhesion during deformation, giving rise to excellent wear resistance. This study elucidates the promoting effect of CCT on the outstanding anti-wear performance of MGs, and is helpful for the development of novel alloys.

Abstract:The effect of thermal cycling treatment on mechanical properties and thermal stability of a Zr41Ti14Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 bulk metallic glass is investigated.The metallic glassy samples are sealed into quartz tubes under high vacuum condition,and liquid nitrogen together with electric furnace are used to control a periodical temperature variation between 196℃ and 150℃.The structure and properties of the tested samples for different thermal cycles have been examined by X-ray diffraction analysis,mechanical properties measurement and thermal analysis.It has been found that the structure and properties of the samples do not show a significant change even after 200 cycles,which suggests Zr41Ti14Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 alloy as having potential in aerospace environment.
