Abstract:In response to the drawbacks of low efficiency, cumbersome calculation, and easy-to-fall local optimal solutions in existing shallow water acoustic parameters inversion research, this paper proposes a shallow water acoustic parameters inversion method based on a feedback (BP) neural network model. Firstly, the theoretically predicted values of the shallow water sound pressure field are obtained through the fast field method (FFM). Secondly, a relationship model between the predicted sound pressure field and the inversion of ground sound parameter values is established based on the BP neural network model. Finally, the measured sound pressure field data are brought into the neural network model to obtain the inversion results. The application results of the method indicate that, compared to the classical simulated annealing (SA) algorithm, the BP neural network model converts the data-matching process of the optimization algorithm into the construction of a relationship model between the input data and the desired parameters, avoiding repeated matching and optimization processes. Therefore, it can directly, accurately, and efficiently output the inversion results. Under the premise of setting the same accuracy, the iteration number of the BP neural network model is reduced to 2% of the SA algorithm, cutting the calculation time to 30% of the SA algorithm. It has broad application prospects in shallow sea acoustic parameters inversion algorithms.
Measurement of the absorption coefficient for acoustical coating samples using multi-channel inverse filter

Abstract:A method of measuring the absorption coefficient for acoustical coating samples by use of the multi-channel inverse filter based on the least square method was proposed.First,the responses of the circuit channels and the underwater acoustical channels are estimated,the retransmitted inverse signals for the multiple transducers can be estimated using the least square method,and the cost function constructed by the multi-channel inverse filtering theory can be solved.Then,by retransmitting the inverse signals,the incident signal at the position of the acoustical coating sample is focused with high resolution,low level of side lobes and a narrow pulse signal in temporal domain,which improves the measurement accuracy of the absorption coefficient for acoustical coating samples at low frequencies.The performance of the spatio-temporal focusing for the proposed method is demonstrated by simulations.The validity of the method is verified by experiments carried out in a cylindrical tank for a steel plate sample in the frequency range 0.8-5.0 kHz.The experimental results show that the proposed method is effective to the measurement of the absorption coefficient for acoustical coating samples in non-free field,and is especially applicable to low-frequency measurements.

Abstract:Traditional methods for acoustic field visualization require considerable effort for capturing large amounts of acoustic data to achieve a high resolution field map, highly limiting their widespread use. In this study, we propose an approach for acoustic field visualization based on physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) by using a small amount of data, subsequently realizing accurate acoustic source localization. First, we present a PINN model integrated with an acoustic Helmholtz equation and adaptive sampling, the performance of which is testified via numerical simulations. The “no mesh” character of PINN enables achieving high resolution acoustic field visualization without requiring the capture of numerous data in advance. Furthermore, we experimentally validate the performance of the proposed method, which demonstrates that the acoustic sources can be precisely localized with sparse field data acquisition within a small area. This work would find potential applications in various acoustics, such as acoustic communication, biomedical imaging, and virtual reality.

Abstract:This work proposes a method to predict the sound absorption coefficient of finite porous absorbers using a residual neural network and a single-layer microphone array. The goal is to mitigate the discrepancies between predicted and measured data due to the finite-size effect for a wide range of rectangular absorbers with varying dimensions and flow resistivity and for various source-receiver locations. Data for training, validation, and testing are generated with a boundary element model consisting of a baffled porous layer on a rigid backing using the Delany-Bazley-Miki model. In effect, the network learns relevant features from the array pressure amplitude to predict the sound absorption as if the porous material were infinite. The method's performance is quantified with the error between the predicted and theoretical sound absorption coefficients and compared with the two-microphone method. For array distances close to the porous sample, the proposed method performs at least as well as the two-microphone method and significantly better than it for frequencies below 400 Hz and small absorber sizes (e.g., 20 × 20 cm2). The significance of the study lies in the possibility of measuring sound absorption on-site in the presence of strong edge diffraction.

Abstract:Acoustic imaging is a powerful technique to localize and reconstruct source powers using microphone array, but it often involves timeconsuming and ill-posed inverse problems. In this paper, we propose to efficient build up the forward model of acoustic power propagation by using the convolution with the spatially invariant kernel. And kernel size and values are appropriately derived from the Symmetric Toepliz Block Toepliz of propagation matrix. For inverse problem, we then propose to apply hierarchical Variational Bayesian inference in order to achieve robust acoustic imaging in the colored background noises; Student's-t prior is explored to enforce the sparse distribution of acoustic powers and to obtain super resolution; moreover, wide dynamic range of estimated powers can be obtained thanks to the heavy tail of Student'st distribution; To achieve robust estimations, colored noise distributions are also modeled by the Student's-t prior, which does not excessively penalize large errors as the Gaussian prior does. Finally the proposed approach is compared with classical methods on the real data from wind tunnel experiments.

Abstract:The CHO mutant EM9 is hypersentitive to simple alkylating agents and is unable to rejoin efficiently the DNA single-strand breaks that arise during base excision repair. In addition, EM9 exhibits a reduced frequency of homologous recombination and a 10-fold increase in sister chromatid exchange, similar to that observed in cells from individuals afflicted with Bloom`s syndrome. The human gene that fully corrects EM9 has been cloned and is denoted XRCC1, and fully functional XRCC1 cDNA minigenes have been constructed. To further examine the biochemical role of XRCC1, the human XRCCq ORF was inserted into the E. coli expression vector pMAL-cRI (New England Biolabs, Beverly, MA) to generate pMAL-cRIX, which encodes a fusion protein.

Abstract:Room acoustic simulations at low frequencies often face significant uncertainties of material parameters and boundary conditions due to absorbing material. We discuss the application of Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) to solve the (forward) Helmholtz equation in three dimensions (3D), employing mini-batch stochastic gradient descent with periodic resampling every 100 iterations for memory-efficient training. Addressing the computational challenges posed by the extension of PINNs from 2D to 3D for acoustics, DeepXDE is used for implementing the forward PINN. The proposed numerical method is benchmarked against an analytical solution of a standing wave field in 3D. The PINN results are also compared to the Finite Element Method (FEM) solutions for a 3D wave field computed with openCFS. The alignment between PINN-generated solutions and analytical/FEM solutions shows the feasibility of PINNs modeling 3D acoustic applications for future inverse problems, and validating the accuracy and reliability of the proposed approach. Compared to FEM, establishing the PINN model took few hours (similar to the setup of a FEM simulation), the training took 38h to 42.8h (which is longer than the solution of the FEM simulation, which took 17min-19min), and the inference took 0.05 seconds being more than 20,000 times faster than the FEM benchmark openCFS using the same number of degrees of freedomwhen producing the results. Thereby, the insight is gained that 3D acoustic wave simulations in the frequency domain are feasible for forward PINNs and can predict complex wave behaviors in real-world applications.

Abstract:This study was designed to compare the effectiveness of fluconazole vs. itraconazole as maintenance therapy for AIDS-associated cryptococcal meningitis. HIV-infected patients who had been successfully treated (achieved negative culture of CSF) for a first episode of cryptococcal meningitis were randomized to receive fluconazole or itraconazole, both at 200 mg/d, for 12 months. The study was stopped prematurely on the recommendation of an independent Data Safety and Monitoring Board. At the time, 13 (23%) of 57 itraconazole recipients had experienced culture-positive relapse, compared with 2 relapses (4%) noted among 51 fluconazole recipients (P = .006). The factor best associated with relapse was the patient having not received flucytosine during the initial 2 weeks of primary treatment for cryptococcal disease (relative risk = 5.88; 95% confidence interval, 1.27-27.14; P = .04). Fluconazole remains the treatment of choice for maintenance therapy for AIDS-associated cryptococcal disease. Flucytosine may contribute to the prevention of relapse if used during the first 2 weeks of primary therapy.
A Neural Network Warm-Start Approach for the Inverse Acoustic Obstacle Scattering Problem

Abstract:We consider the inverse acoustic obstacle problem for sound-soft star-shaped obstacles in two dimensions wherein the boundary of the obstacle is determined from measurements of the scattered field at a collection of receivers outside the object. One of the standard approaches for solving this problem is to reformulate it as an optimization problem: finding the boundary of the domain that minimizes the $L^2$ distance between computed values of the scattered field and the given measurement data. The optimization problem is computationally challenging since the local set of convexity shrinks with increasing frequency and results in an increasing number of local minima in the vicinity of the true solution. In many practical experimental settings, low frequency measurements are unavailable due to limitations of the experimental setup or the sensors used for measurement. Thus, obtaining a good initial guess for the optimization problem plays a vital role in this environment. We present a neural network warm-start approach for solving the inverse scattering problem, where an initial guess for the optimization problem is obtained using a trained neural network. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method with several numerical examples. For high frequency problems, this approach outperforms traditional iterative methods such as Gauss-Newton initialized without any prior (i.e., initialized using a unit circle), or initialized using the solution of a direct method such as the linear sampling method. The algorithm remains robust to noise in the scattered field measurements and also converges to the true solution for limited aperture data. However, the number of training samples required to train the neural network scales exponentially in frequency and the complexity of the obstacles considered. We conclude with a discussion of this phenomenon and potential directions for future research.

Sound Field Reconstruction Using a Compact Acoustics-informed Neural Network

Abstract:Sound field reconstruction (SFR) augments the information of a sound field captured by a microphone array. Conventional SFR methods using basis function decomposition are straightforward and computationally efficient, but may require more microphones than needed to measure the sound field. Recent studies show that pure data-driven and learning-based methods are promising in some SFR tasks, but they are usually computationally heavy and may fail to reconstruct a physically valid sound field. This paper proposes a compact acoustics-informed neural network (AINN) method for SFR, whereby the Helmholtz equation is exploited to regularize the neural network. As opposed to pure data-driven approaches that solely rely on measured sound pressures, the integration of the Helmholtz equation improves robustness of the neural network against variations during the measurement processes and prompts the generation of physically valid reconstructions. The AINN is designed to be compact, and is able to predict not only the sound pressures but also sound pressure gradients within a spatial region of interest based on measured sound pressures along the boundary. Numerical experiments with acoustic transfer functions measured in different environments demonstrate the superiority of the AINN method over the traditional cylinder harmonic decomposition and the singular value decomposition methods.

Abstract:Estimating the sound absorption in situ relies on accurately describing the measured sound field. Evidence suggests that modeling the reflection of impinging spherical waves is important, especially for compact measurement systems. This article proposes a method for estimating the sound absorption coefficient of a material sample by mapping the sound pressure, measured by a microphone array, to a distribution of monopoles along a line in the complex plane. The proposed method is compared to modeling the sound field as a superposition of two sources (a monopole and an image source). The obtained inverse problems are solved with Tikhonov regularization, with automatic choice of the regularization parameter by the L-curve criterion. The sound absorption measurement is tested with simulations of the sound field above infinite and finite porous absorbers. The approaches are compared to the plane-wave absorption coefficient and the one obtained by spherical wave incidence. Experimental analysis of two porous samples and one resonant absorber is also carried out in situ. Four arrays were tested with an increasing aperture and number of sensors. It was demonstrated that measurements are feasible even with an array with only a few microphones. The discretization of the integral equation led to a more accurate reconstruction of the sound pressure and particle velocity at the sample's surface. The resulting absorption coefficient agrees with the one obtained for spherical wave incidence, indicating that including more monopoles along the complex line is an essential feature of the sound field.

Abstract:Acoustic modelling of materials is a key aspect to perform reliable predictions of untested configurations and to implement optimal strategies, especially nowadays, due to the development of 3D printing techniques allowing to generate deterministic microstructures in porous materials. However, this modelling is not straightforward due to the number of parameters characterizing porous materials. Each one of these parameters can be estimated experimentally with its own setup and procedure, not always easy to execute. On the other hand, the use of inverse methods for the estimation of parameters relies on physical approximations and requires experimental procedures that are strongly sensitive to boundary conditions. Consequently, experimental determination of the parameters of porous materials may become financially expensive and very time consuming. The purpose of this work is to investigate the performances of machine learning techniques in determining the parameters of Johnson-Champoux-Allard model, in order to understand whether missing values can be predicted just relying on a set of already performed experimental characterizations when not all the experimental setups are available. In particular, Gaussian processes are used on a training set describing porous materials in terms of Johnson-Champoux-Allard parameters and the values of acoustic indices at fixed frequencies.

Abstract:This article presents an improved and extended modeling approach for acoustic wave propagation in rigid porous materials, focusing on examples, such as plastic foams used for noise reduction in automotive applications. We demonstrate that the classical model (Johnson-Champoux-Allard) in the asymptotic high-frequency limit, widely employed in the literature, fails to accurately reconstruct the transmitted acoustic signal through high absorbent porous materials characterized by significant wave attenuation. The study focuses on the airborne ultrasonic frequency range (30–200 kHz). To address this limitation, we introduce new non-acoustic parameters Σ and V for viscous effects, and Σ′ and V′ for thermal effects, with surface and volumetric dimensions, respectively, allowing for the reconstruction of the transmitted signal and accurate modeling of the pronounced acoustic attenuation within the material. These parameters are incorporated into the expansion on skin depths of the dynamic tortuosity α(ω) and thermal tortuosity α′ (ω) response functions, which describe the inertial-viscous and thermal interactions between the fluid and the solid, respectively. This novel modeling approach enables a more comprehensive study of high attenuating porous media, which are crucial for effective noise reduction. Additionally, it opens up new possibilities for characterization beyond the capabilities of current models.

Abstract:Acoustic source mapping usually involves planar microphone arrays and calculation points located on a surface at a certain distance with respect to the array. An implicit assumption that sources are located on this surface is therefore performed. However, in some application, such as aeroacoustic source identification, this assumption may be wrong and produce misleading results. For this reason, it is interesting to extend the common acoustic mapping techniques to three-dimensional volumetric mapping. Direct beamforming techniques are not suited for volumetric imaging due to poor spatial resolution in radial direction from the array centre. Therefore, more refined algorithms, like deconvolution techniques or inverse methods, are required to obtain intelligible and accurate results.This paper describes the use of inverse methods in the context of aeroacoustic three-dimensional volumetric noise imaging. An Equivalent Source Method is formulated, based on Iteratively Reweighted Least Squares and on Bayesian Regularization. Moreover, a novel approach based on CLEAN-SC as decomposition tool of Cross-Spectral-Matrix in coherent source components is presented.The method proposed is applied on an aircraft model in wind tunnel. Performance are preliminary assessed with simulated test cases. A comparative investigation in exploiting a single planar array or multiple planar arrays observing noise sources from different directions is performed.

Prediction of the sound field above a patchwork of absorbing materials

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to investigate the acoustic performance of sound absorbing materials through a numerical wave based prediction technique. The final goal of this work is to get insight into the acoustic behavior of a combination of sound absorbing patches. In order to address a wide frequency range, a model based on the Trefftz approach is adopted. In this approach, the dynamic field variables are expressed in terms of global wave function expansions that satisfy the governing dynamic equations exactly. Therefore, approximation errors are associated only with the boundary conditions of the considered problem. This results in a computationally efficient technique. The main advantage of this method is the fact that the sound absorbing patches do not have to be locally reacting. In this article, the wave based method is described and experimentally validated for the case of normal incidence sound absorption identification in a standing wave tube. Afterwards, the method is applied to simulate some interesting setups of absorbing materials.

Abstract:The design of low-frequency sound absorbers with broadband absorption characteristics and optimized dimensions is a pressing research problem in engineering acoustics. In this work, a deep neural network based inverse prediction mechanism is proposed to geometrically design a Helmholtz resonator (HR) based acoustic absorber for low-frequency absorption. Analytically obtained frequency response from electro-acoustic theory is deployed to create the large dataset required for training and testing the deep neural network. The trained convolutional neural network inversely speculates optimum design parameters corresponding to the desired absorption characteristics with high fidelity. To validate, the inverse design procedure is initially implemented on a standard HR based sound absorber model with high accuracy. Thereafter, the inverse design strategy is extended to forecast the optimum geometric parameters of an absorber with complex features, which is realized using HRs and a micro-perforated panel. Subsequently, a quasi-perfect low-frequency acoustic absorber having minimum thickness and broadband characteristics is deduced. Importantly, it is demonstrated that the proposed absorber, comprising four parallel HRs and a microperforated panel, absorbed more than 90% sound in the frequency band of 347–630 Hz. The introduced design process reveals a wide variety of applications in engineering acoustics as it is suitable for tailoring any sound absorber model with desirable features.

Abstract:A multiphysics data analytic platform is established for imaging poroelastic interfaces of finite permeability (e.g., hydraulic fractures) from elastic waveforms and/or acoustic pore pressure measurements. This is accomplished through recent advances in design of non-iterative sampling methods to inverse scattering. The direct problem is formulated via the Biot equations in the frequency domain where a network of discontinuities is illuminated by a set of total body forces and fluid volumetric sources, while monitoring the induced (acoustic and elastic) scattered waves in an arbitrary near-field configuration. A thin-layer approximation is deployed to capture the rough and multiphase nature of interfaces whose spatially varying hydro-mechanical properties are a priori unknown. In this setting, the well-posedness analysis of the forward problem yields the admissibility conditions for the contact parameters. In light of which, the poroelastic scattering operator and its first and second factorizations are introduced and their mathematical properties are carefully examined. It is shown that the non-selfadjoint nature of the Biot system leads to an intrinsically asymmetric factorization of the scattering operator which may be symmetrized at certain limits. These results furnish a robust framework for systematic design of regularized and convex cost functionals whose minimizers underpin the multiphysics imaging indicators. The proposed solution is synthetically implemented with application to spatiotemporal reconstruction of hydraulic fracture networks via deep-well measurements.

Abstract:In this work, we introduce a novel framework which combines physics and machine learning methods to analyse acoustic signals. Three methods are developed for this task: a Bayesian inference approach for inferring the spectral acoustics characteristics, a neural-physical model which equips a neural network with forward and backward physical losses, and the non-linear least squares approach which serves as benchmark. The inferred propagation coefficient leads to the room impulse response (RIR) quantity which can be used for relocalisation with uncertainty. The simplicity and efficiency of this framework is empirically validated on simulated data.

Abstract:Physics-informed Neural Networks (PINNs) is a method for numerical simulation that incorporates a loss function corresponding to the governing equations into a neural network. While PINNs have been explored for their utility in inverse analysis, their application in acoustic analysis remains limited. This study presents a method to identify loss parameters in acoustic tubes using PINNs. We categorized the loss parameters into two groups: one dependent on the tube's diameter and another constant, independent of it. The latter were set as the trainable parameters of the neural network. The problem of identifying the loss parameter was formulated as an optimization problem, with the physical properties being determined through this process. The neural network architecture employed was based on our previously proposed ResoNet, which is designed for analyzing acoustic resonance. The efficacy of the proposed method is assessed through both forward and inverse analysis, specifically through the identification of loss parameters. The findings demonstrate that it is feasible to accurately identify parameters that significantly impact the sound field under analysis. By merely altering the governing equations in the loss function, this method could be adapted to various sound fields, suggesting its potential for broad application.
