Design of Hetero-Nanostructures on MoS2 Nanosheets To Boost NO2 Room-Temperature Sensing

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), as a promising gas-sensing material, has gained intense interest because of its large surface-to-volume ratio, air stability, and various active sites for functionalization. However, MoS2-based gas sensors still suffer from low sensitivity, slow response, and weak recovery at room temperature, especially for NO2. Fabrication of heterostructures may be an effective way to modulate the intrinsic electronic properties of MoS2 nanosheets (NSs), thereby achieving high sensitivity and excellent recovery properties. In this work, we design a novel p-n hetero-nanostructure on MoS2 NSs using interface engineering via a simple wet chemical method. After surface modification with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), the MoS2/ZnO hetero-nanostructure is endowed with an excellent response (5 ppm nitrogen dioxide, 3050%), which is 11 times greater than that of pure MoS2 NSs. To the best of our knowledge, such a response value is much higher than the response values reported for MoS2 gas sensors. Moreover, the fabricated hetero-nanostructure also improves recoverability to more than 90%, which is rare for room-temperature gas sensors. Our optimal sensor also possesses the characteristics of an ultrafast response time of 40 s, a reliable long-term stability within 10 weeks, an excellent selectivity, and a low detection concentration of 50 ppb. The enhanced sensing performances of the MoS2/ZnO hetero-nanostructure can be ascribed to unique 2D/0D hetero-nanostructures, synergistic effects, and p-n heterojunctions between ZnO NPs and MoS2 NSs. Such achievements of MoS2/ZnO hetero-nanostructure sensors imply that it is possible to use this novel nanostructure in ultrasensitive sensor applications.

Abstract:With the continuous industrialization, as one of the most common air pollutants found in fossil fuels and automobile exhausts, nitride oxide (NO2) monitor is very essential for ensuring good air quality and our body health. 2D materials attract more attention for its special surface and electron structures. MoS2 shows small gas sensing response for its less surface dangling bonds. Here, we introduce a facile method to modify MoS2 with SnO2 as a NO2 receptor via mechanical composite. The MoS2 nanoflowers prepared with a hydrothermal method depicted a high surface/volume ratio and the SnO2 fabricated using a solvothermal method. Mixing ratio and annealing temperature was systematic researched for screening optimal parameters for gas sensor fabrication. The response was enhanced 1.5 time after modification with fast response and recovery time. The p-n heterostructure also provide good selectivity towards NO2 for gas sensing. This work provides a facile alternative for fast and stable response NO2 gas sensor at room temperature.

Abstract:2D materials possess great potential to serve as gas-sensing materials due to their large, specific surface areas and strong surface activities. Among this family, transition metal chalcogenide materials exhibit different properties and are promising candidates for a wide range of applications, including sensors, photodetectors, energy conversion, and energy storage. Herein, a high-shear mixing method has been used to produce multilayered MoS2 nanosheet dispersions. MoS2 thin films were manufactured by vacuum-assisted filtration. The structural morphology of MoS2 was studied using ς-potential, UV-visible, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy (RS). The spectroscopic and microscopic analyses confirm the formation of a high-crystalline MoS2 thin film with good inter-sheet connectivity and relative thickness uniformity. The thickness of the MoS2 layer is measured to be approximately 250 nm, with a nanosheet size of 120 nm ± 40 nm and a number of layers between 6 and 9 layers. Moreover, the electrical characteristics clearly showed that the MoS2 thin film exhibits good conductivity and a linear I-V curve response, indicating good ohmic contact between the MoS2 film and the electrodes. As an example of applicability, we fabricated chemiresistive sensor devices with a MoS2 film as a sensing layer. The performance of the MoS2-chemiresistive sensor for NO2 was assessed by being exposed to different concentrations of NO2 (1 ppm to 10 ppm). This sensor shows a sensibility to low concentrations of 1 ppm, with a response time of 114 s and a recovery time of 420 s. The effect of thin-film thickness and operating temperatures on sensor response was studied. The results show that thinner film exhibits a higher response to NO2; the response decreases as the working temperature increases.

Abstract:An ammonia sensor based on a delay-line surface acoustic wave (SAW) device is developed in this study by coating the delay line area of the device with a nano-structured molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) sensitive material. A SAW device of 122 MHz was designed and fabricated with a pair of interdigital transducers (IDTs) defined on a 128° y-cut LiNbO3 substrate using photolithography technologies, and the aluminum IDT electrodes were deposited by a DC magnetron sputtering system. By adjusting the pH values of precursor solutions, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanospheres were prepared with various structures using a hydrothermal method. Finally, an NH3 gas sensor with high sensitivity of 4878 Hz/ppm, operating at room temperature, was successfully obtained. The excellent sensitivity performance may be due to the efficient adsorption of NH3 gas molecules on the surfaces of the nanoflower-like MoS2, which has a larger specific surface area and provides more active sites, and results in a larger change in the resonant frequency of the device due to the mass loading effect.

Abstract:Constructing heterogeneous interfaces on a nanoscale that can prominently improve the gas-sensing properties has been comprehensively reported. However, the effect of parallel heterostructures formed by unique synthetic means on nitrogen dioxide room-temperature sensing properties still needs to be clarified, which hinders the development of heterostructured hybrid materials in the field of gas sensing. In this study, large-sized MoS2 was parallel-wrapped on the surface of nanoscale Bi2S3 rods, and then, the Bi2S3/MoS2 nanocomposite aerogels were formed by freeze drying and calcination. The NO2 sensing performance of the hybrids and possible surface processes at room temperature have been investigated and deduced. The as-prepared nanocomposite aerogels (Bi2S3/MoS2-2) exhibited a larger specific surface area, a mass of active defect sites, and a higher charge density, thus possessing 15- and 20-times higher response than that of pristine MoS2 nanosheets and Bi2S3 nanorods, respectively. This study provides an efficient way to synthesize large-area parallel heterostructures between two bis-sulfides (Bi2S3 and MoS2), leading to excellent NO2 gas sensing performance.

Abstract:Low energy consumption, high sensing response and high selectivity are the important indexes of metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors applied in many application fields. However, the high working temperature and poor selectivity of MOS sensors severely restrict their scope of application in the Internet of Things (IoT). Herein, ternary MoS2-rGO-Cu2O (MG-Cu) composites with boosting ppb-level NO2 sensing characteristics are synthesized by combining hydrothermal method and soft-template method. The optimal proportion of MoS2, rGO and Cu2O is systematically explored. The SEM and TEM analyses confirm the hollow Cu2O is anchored on the surface of MG. The gas sensing tests illustrate that optimum composite sensor exhibits highest response to 500 ppb NO2 at room temperature, which is 11 and 5 times higher compared to pure MoS2 and binary MG15, respectively. Besides, it displays excellent selectivity and superior stability. The synergy of shell-structure with abundant mesoporous, heterojunction construction and enhanced conductivity lead to the enhanced sensing performance of ternary sensor.

Abstract:Concern over increasing pollution and ways to mitigate it is in high demand due to the swift advancement of technology and the creation of advanced utilities. Nitrogen oxide (NO2) is a well-known evolved toxin that poses a threat to human health, the environment, and biodiversity. Therefore, several works are carried to sense the NO2 gas at its trace concentration. However, the majority of NO2 sensors that have been reported have inadequate Limit of Detection (LOD), high operating temperature, and low sensitivity. Orthorhombic molybdenum oxide (α-MoO3) recently emerged as hotspot in the gas sensing research and noted for its high sensitivity, and distinct sensing capabilities owing to its unique layered structure. In this study, Fe-doped α-MoO3 nanosheets for NO2 sensing is prepared, and at a low operating temperature of 110 °C, an excellent sensitivity of 1282% for 10 ppm of NO2 is achieved. Long-term stability, good repeatability, and an ultra-low detection limit of 79 ppt are also demonstrated by the manufactured sensors. In addition, the obtained low activation energy of -2.9 KJ mol-1 and the high band bending for FM6 supports the highly responsive NO2 detection at low operating temperatures.
A chemiresistive gas sensor for sensitive detection of SO2 employing Ni-MOF modified –OH-SWNTs and –OH-MWNTs

Abstract:Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is prominent as hazardous gas owing to its unpropitious effects on the ecosystem. In this report, a flexible SO2 gas sensor is reported by solvothermally synthesized crystalline nickel(II)benzenetricarboxylate metal–organic framework (Ni-MOF) modified with hydroxyl group (–OH) activated single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs), respectively. Introduction of –OH-SWNTs and –OH–MWNTs played crucial role in the improvement in electrical and morphological properties of Ni-MOF as well as boosted the sensing ability toward SO2 gas at room temperature. The structural and spectroscopy properties of pristine Ni-MOF, Ni-MOF/–OH–SWNTs and Ni-MOF/–OH-MWNTs were studied by X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), respectively. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) were used for the morphological analysis of synthesized material. The selective response of Ni-MOF/–OH-SWNTs and Ni-MOF/–OH-MWNTs toward SO2, NO2, NH3 and CO analytes (0.5–15 ppm) was withal studied by monitoring the changes in electrical resistance of the material at room temperature. The present study reveals that doping of –OH-SWNTs and –OH-MWNTs into the MOF leads to efficient increment in the sensing characteristics. The composite of Ni-MOF/–OH-SWNTs exhibited better sensing response (10 s) with less recovery time (30 s) for 1 ppm concentration along with considerable sensitivity (0.9784) and selectivity toward SO2 gas.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials are useful for building gas sensors owing to their desirable electronic and optical properties. However, they usually suffer from selectivity, because they cannot discriminate between gas molecules. Functionalization with organic molecules can be used to tailor their surfaces to recognize a specific family of compounds. In this study, solid-state density functional theory (DFT) was used to elucidate the functionalization of MoS2 with substituted aromatic diazonium salts (R = -H, - CH3, -CO2H, -CHO, -OCH3, and -NO2). Results showed that chemical reaction with diazonium salts is favored to their physical adsorption (E ads = -0.04 to -0.38 eV vs E rxn = -1.47 to -2.20 eV), where organic cations have a preference to attach atop of sulfur atoms. Chemical functionalization induced a small variation in the bandgap energy not exceeding 0.04 eV; thus, the optical properties were well preserved. In the presence of ammonia, the substituted MoS 2 /2(a-f) responded to the target analyte through a change in the interaction energy, varying from -0.08 to -0.83 eV, where the best interaction energy was obtained for MoS 2 /2c, bearing the carboxylic acid group. In the presence of other gases such as CO2, SO2, and H2S, the interaction energy is lower (-0.14 to -0.35 eV), indicating good selectivity of the nanomaterials. Furthermore, the interaction increased in the presence of humidity, which was more realistic than that in the presence of neat NH3. This interaction was confirmed by computing the partial charges. Recovery times estimated from the interaction energies ranged from 0.31 s to several minutes, depending on the interacting molecules. Phenylcarboxyl-modified MoS2 nanosheets show great potential as candidates for the development of chemoresistive gas sensors that are specifically designed for detecting ammonia.
Integration strategies of ternary hierarchical nanocomposite designs with activated ultraviolet lights and surface acoustic waves for enhancing NO 2 sensing at room-temperature

Abstract:There is a great concern for nitrogen oxide (NO 2 ) due to its hazardous effects on environment and human health, therefore, many types of NO 2 sensors have been proposed. Among them, surface acoustic wave (SAW) NO 2 sensors show intrinsic advantages such as wireless monitoring, but their combined sensitivities, responses, and limits of detection operated at room temperature remain huge challenges. In this study, we proposed an integration strategy in which graphene oxide-molybdenum disulfide/tin dioxide (GO-MoS 2 /SnO 2 ) ternary composite film was rationally designed on a SAW resonator for detection of low concentrations of NO 2 at room temperature (25°C), and its response speed are enhanced with ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation. Characterization results revealed that MoS 2 and SnO 2 formed the MoS 2 /SnO 2 heterojunctions through interfacial chemical bonds of S-Sn-O, and the GO-MoS 2 /SnO 2 ternary composite showed a hierarchical structure with the heterojunctions exposed and covered by the flake-structure GO. It achieved a large specific surface area of 111.6 m 2 /g, abundant functional groups, and numerous surface defects, providing plentiful adsorption and reaction sites of NO 2 . The developed NO 2 sensor showed a low limit of detection of 1 ppm, a high sensitivity of ∼164.77 Hz/ppm, and fast response/recovery time of 16.4 s/19.1 s, as well as excellent repeatability, selectivity, and long-term stability. The key sensing mechanisms were identified as the large surface areas of the stacked composite leading to the increased adsorption and reaction sites, enhanced conductivity through the MoS 2 /SnO 2 heterojunctions, and numerous photogenerated charge carriers produced by UV activation.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, nanostructured Molybdenum Selenide (MoSe2) with composited phases are synthesized by hydrothermal method, and the products are modified by metal anoparticles to improve the gas sensing performance. Microstructure characterization shows that few layered 1T/2H-MoSe2 nanosheets have been successfully prepared. Both the morphology and composition of nanosheets could be tuned by the reaction parameters. It is shown the MoSe2-based nanomaterials have excellent selectivity to Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) according to gas sensing properties measurement. The sensitivity of 1T/2H-MoSe2 nanosheets modified by Cu nanoparticles is 17.73 (50 ppm NO2) at the optimal operating temperature, which is the highest compared with other samples. The sensors also exhibit rapid response/recovery time and high stability. The sensing mechanism of MoSe2 nanosheets toward NO2 is investigated based on the first-principles calculation. The results suggest the modification by metal nanoparticles could significantly improve the adsorption energy and the charge transfer between gas molecule and MoSe2. This work demonstrates a promising guidance for the design of new NO2 gas sensing materials and devices.

Abstract:As a typical metal oxide semiconductor, ZnO has been investigated deeply for the application of gas sensing materials. In this study, an ultrahigh sensitive and selective NO2 gas sensor based on porous ZnO nanocubes derived from metal organic frameworks (MOFs) was reported. The MOF-derivatives were obtained by precisely control of the subsequent pyrolysis process. The sensitivity of MOF-derivatives toward 1 ppm NO2 at 200 degrees C was 51.41 under 500 degrees C pyrolysis treatment. Compared with similar work, the sensitivity has been greatly improved. Furthermore, the fabricated gas sensor demonstrated excellent selectivity to NO2 over other gases (CO, C2H5OH, H2, H2S, NO, NH3). The ultrahigh sensitivity and selectivity were attributed to the unique structure after pyrolysis, which provides more exposed active sites and connected pore channels.
Effect of a Ni-Substituted Cu-MOF Precursor toward Efficient NO 2 Gas Detection: A Comprehensive Comparative Gas-Sensing Study of MOF-Derived and Traditionally Synthesized CuO/NiO-Based Nanocomposites

Abstract:With the progression of research on gas sensors, numerous studies are being carried out on the tuning of metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived semiconductor metal oxides (SMOs) for gas-sensing studies in lieu of traditionally synthesized SMOs to attain the desired result at lower temperatures and enhance the sensor response. Still, no comparative gas-sensing study between traditionally synthesized SMOs and MOF-derived SMOs has been conducted to understand the reasons behind such a higher activity. To gain insights into the enhanced activity and find the reasons behind the improved sensor response, a comparative gas-sensing study was carried out using octahedral Cu-MOF as a template to fabricate an MOF-derived CuO/NiO (CuO/NiOM) heterostructure and traditionally synthesized CuO/NiO (CuO/NiOD) heterostructure via the combustion route. More importantly, our study revealed that the substitution of Ni2+ ions into the MOF template did not destroy the porous hierarchical framework of Cu-MOF either during the calcination process or when the Ni2+ ions were added into the precursor medium. A higher surface area (35 m2/g) and porosity obtained during the process would have provided sufficient permeability channels for the sorption of NO2 molecules, leading to the formation of the maximum concentration of active sites. Our results revealed that MOF-template-derived CuO/NiOM showed a comparatively higher response of S% = 13.9%, with response and recovery times of 18 and 29 s, respectively, at a temperature of 110 °C compared to traditionally synthesized CuO/NiOD. Further, to attain efficient room-temperature activity with a higher sensor response and lower response and recovery times, a p–n heterojunction was formed at their interface by modifying n-type thermally reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with CuO/NiOM. The rGO-CuO/NiOM gas sensor showed a p-type behavior with a comparatively higher response of 23.9% toward 60 ppm of NO2 at room temperature, with the lowest response and recovery times of 10 and 15 s, respectively. In addition, the sensor also possessed ultralow detection ability up to 5 ppm of NO2 with fast response and recovery.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have received emerging attention due to their rich active sites, layered structure, and suitable electronic structure for gas sensing at room temperature (25 degrees C). However, the sensitivity, recoverability, stability and selectivity of TMDs-based gas sensors have remained a grand challenge. Herein, a novel 2D/0D molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)/zinc sulfide (ZnS) based gas sensor was rationally designed via a two-step solution process, enabling high-performance detection of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas at room temperature. Specifically, the MoS2/ZnS heterostructures manifest a greatly enhanced response performance (S = 7.2) to 5 ppm NO2 in comparison with the bare MoS2 nanosheets. The gas sensor can be completely recovered after re-exposing to the air for 4.6 min at room temperature without using any external auxiliary treatments. Our optimized gas sensor not only exhibits an ultra-low theoretical limit of detection (14 ppb), but also shows an ultrahigh selectivity and outstanding stability. We further showed that the greatly enhanced gas sensing performance of 2D/0D MoS2/ZnS can be ascribed to the unique structure as well as the synergistic effects between MoS2 nanosheets and ZnS nanoparticles from the geometrical, charge transfer, equivalent resistance, and chemical aspects. This work provides a promising approach to the fabrication of high-performance gas sensing materials for environmental monitoring at room temperature.

Abstract:Molybdenum selenide (MoSe2) has drawn significant interest due to its typical semiconductor properties. MoSe2 is a relatively novel material in the field of gas sensors especially at room temperature. Herein, we utilize a facile and efficient synthetic method of liquid-phase exfoliation to exfoliate bulk MoSe2 into nanosheets. Anhydrous ethanol is used as dispersant, so the low boiling point makes it easy to be removed from MoSe2 nanosheets, which does not affect the subsequent sensing performance. The exfoliated few-layered MoSe2 nanosheets shows significantly enhanced NO2 gas response (1500% to 10 ppm NO2 which is 18 times greater than pristine bulk MoSe2), a low detection concentration (50 ppb), an outstanding repeatability, a remarkable selectivity, and a reliable long-term device durability (more than 60 d) at room temperature (25 °C). The reason of the significant improvement in gas sensing performance can be attributed mainly to the higher surface-to-volume ratio of exfoliated MoSe2 nanosheets. It promotes the adsorption of gas molecules on the surface of the material, thereby facilitating the charge transfer process. The superior performance of this gas sensor makes MoSe2 nanosheets a potential candidate for room temperature NO2 detection.

Abstract:Novel nanostructured materials are expected to revive materials for chemiresistive sensor applications. MoS2-based gas sensor is widely studied, however, which usually is capable of detecting gas at ppm level. Here, owing to the two-dimensional layered structure that facilitated the surface reaction, sulfur nanosheets (S-NSs) was first designed to composite with MoS2 to improve the sensing performance. Because of the unique electronic and physical properties of S-NSs, the developed chemiresistive sensor based on MoS2@S-NSs nanocomposite demonstrated to realize ultrasensitive detection of NH3 at 0.1 ppt level with a response signal of 68%, and which also showed fast response and recover (9/8.7 seconds respectively) at room temperature in air. Except for the good electrical conductivity and the large adsorption site of MoS2, the excellent sensing property of S-NSs itself made the most important contribution to this appealing high sensitivity to NH3. Additionally, this study has also put forth comprehensive gas sensing mechanisms based on experimental results. In essence, this research offers an innovative materials system tailored for the highly efficient detection of NH3.

Abstract:This study presents three-dimensional (3D) MoS2/reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/graphene quantum dots (GQDs) hybrids with improved gas sensing performance for NO2 sensors. GQDs were introduced to prevent the agglomeration of nanosheets during mixing of rGO and MoS2. The resultant MoS2/rGO/GQDs hybrids exhibit a well-defined 3D nanostructure, with a firm connection among components. The prepared MoS2/rGO/GQDs-based sensor exhibits a response of 23.2% toward 50 ppm NO2 at room temperature. Furthermore, when exposed to NO2 gas with a concentration as low as 5 ppm, the prepared sensor retains a response of 15.2%. Compared with the MoS2/rGO nanocomposites, the addition of GQDs improves the sensitivity to 21.1% and 23.2% when the sensor is exposed to 30 and 50 ppm NO2 gas, respectively. Additionally, the MoS2/rGO/GQDs-based sensor exhibits outstanding repeatability and gas selectivity. When exposed to certain typical interference gases, the MoS2/rGO/GQDs-based sensor has over 10 times higher sensitivity toward NO2 than the other gases. This study indicates that MoS2/rGO/GQDs hybrids are potential candidates for the development of NO2 sensors with excellent gas sensitivity.

Abstract:In this work, the two-dimensional MoS2 film was prepared by sulfuring the molybdenum atomic layer on SiO2/Si substrate. The reaction temperature, heating rate, holding time and carrier gas flow rate were investigated comprehensively. The quality of MoS2 film was characterized by optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The characterization results showed that the optimum synthesis parameters were heating rate of 25 ℃/min, reaction temperature of 750 °C, holding time of 30 min and carrier gas velocity of 100 sccm. The MoS2 gas sensor was fabricated and its gas sensing performance was tested. The test results indicated that the sensor had a good response to both reducing gas (NH3) and oxidizing gas (NO2) at room temperature. The sensitivity to 100 ppm of NO2 was 31.3%, and the response/recovery times were 4 s and 5 s, respectively. In addition, the limit of detection could be as low as 1 ppm. This work helps us to develop low power and integrable room temperature NO2 sensors.

Abstract:High-performance gas sensors for the field of gas sensing have drawn a lot of attention to molybdenum sulfide materials, but there is little research on the influence of crystallization state of MoS2 on gas sensitivity performance. In this study, amorphous MoS2 and crystalline MoS2 were prepared by the hydrothermal method. Then, the gas-sensing characteristics of the as-synthesized amorphous MoS2 and crystalline MoS2 toward NO2 gas were thoroughly investigated and compared. According to the results, with an excellent response value of 1.99 toward 5 ppm NO2 at room temperature, the crystalline MoS2 gas sensor outperformed the amorphous one, while that of the amorphous MoS2 under the same condition was 1.25. However, Four times faster recovery periods were observed in the amorphous MoS2 sample compared to the crystalline MoS2 sample. At the same time, the recovery level of amorphous MoS2 is high and can be fully restored. We discovered that the primary cause of the strong recovery performance of amorphous MoS2 is the presence of localized states that facilitate the easy transition of electrons from the conduction band to the valence band, allowing for effective recombination with the holes. Additionally, the surface of the material absorbs a significant amount of oxygen, which will occupy more of the NO2 adsorption site and hasten the desorption of NO2. This work may aid in the development of gas sensors based on amorphous molybdenum sulfide.
