Abstract:Both of nanoplastics (NPs) and Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) are organic pollutants widely detected in the environment and organisms. The large specific surface area of NPs makes them ideal vectors for carrying various toxicants, such as organic pollutants, metals, or other nanomaterials, posing potential threats to human health. This study used Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) to investigate the neurodevelopmental toxicity induced by combined exposure of TBBPA and polystyrene NPs. Our results showed that combined exposure caused synergistic inhibitory effects on the survival rate, body length/width, and locomotor ability. Furthermore, the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipofuscin accumulation, and dopaminergic neuronal loss suggested that oxidative stress was involved in induction of neurodevelopmental toxicity in C. elegans. The expressions of Parkinson's disease related gene (pink-1) and Alzheimer's disease related gene (hop-1) were significantly increased after combined exposure of TBBPA and polystyrene NPs. Knock out of pink-1 and hop-1 genes alleviated the adverse effects such as growth retardation, locomotion deficits, dopaminergic loss, and oxidative stress induction, indicating that pink-1 and hop-1 genes play an important role in neurodevelopmental toxicity induced by TBBPA and polystyrene NPs. In conclusion, TBBPA and polystyrene NPs had synergistic effect on oxidative stress induction and neurodevelopmental toxicity in C. elegans, which was mediated through increased expressions of pink-1 and hop-1.
Interactive effects of polystyrene nanoplastics and 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonates on the histomorphology, oxidative stress and gut microbiota in Hainan Medaka ( Oryzias curvinotus )

Abstract:Nanoplastics adsorb surrounding organic contaminants in the environment, which alters the physicochemical properties of contaminants and affects associated ecotoxicological effects on aquatic life. The current work aims to explore the individual and combined toxicological implications of polystyrene nanoplastics (80 nm) and 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (Cl-PFAES, trade name: F-53B) in an emerging freshwater fish model Hainan Medaka ( Oryzias curvinotus ). Therefore, O. curvinotus were exposed to 200 μg/L of PS-NPs or 500 μg/L of F-53B in the single or mixture exposure for 7 days to investigate the effects on fluorescence accumulation, tissue damage, antioxidant capacity and intestinal flora. The PS-NPs fluorescence intensity was significantly higher in the single exposure treatment than it in combined exposure treatment ( p < 0.01). Histopathological results showed that exposure to PS-NPs or F-53B inflicted varying degree of damages to the gill, liver, and intestine, and these damage were also present in the corresponding tissues of the combined treatment group, illustrating a stronger extent of destruction of these tissues by the combined treatment. Compared to the control group, combined exposure group elevated the malondialdehyde (MDA) content, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities except in the gill. In addition, the adverse contribution of PS-NPs and F-53B on the enteric flora in the single and combined exposure groups was mainly characterised in the form of reductions in the number of probiotic bacteria (Firmicutes) and this reduction was aggravated by the combined exposure group. Collectively, our results indicated that the toxicological effects of PS-NPs and F-53B on pathology, antioxidant capacity and microbiomics of medaka may be modulated by the interaction of two contaminants with mutually interactive effects. And our work offers fresh information on the combined toxicity of PS-NPs and F-53B to aquatic creatures along with a molecular foundation for the environmental toxicological mechanism.

Abstract:The understanding of the environmental consequences resulting from the presence of micro(nano)plastics and carbon nanofibers (CNFs) in aquatic ecosystems is currently limited. This research endeavor sought to investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms by which engineered polystyrene-based microplastics (MPs)/nanoplastics (NPs) and CNFs, both individually and in combination, elicit toxic effects on an algal species Chlorella pyrenoidosa . The findings revealed that the combined toxicity of MPs/NPs and CNFs depended on the concentration of the mixture. As the concentration increased, the combined toxicity of MPs/NPs and CNFs was significantly greater than the toxicity of each component on its own. Furthermore, the combined toxicity of NPs and CNFs was higher than that of MPs and CNFs. The study integrated data on cell membrane integrity, oxidative stress, and antioxidant modulation to create an Integrated Biomarker Response index, which demonstrated that the co-exposure of algae to NPs and CNFs resulted in more severe cellular stress compared to exposure to NPs alone. Similarly, the combination of NPs and CNFs caused greater cellular stress than the combination of MPs and CNFs. Additionally, significant changes in the expression of stress-related genes caused by MPs/NPs alone and in combination with CNFs indicated that oxidative stress response, glucose metabolism, and energy metabolism played critical roles in particle-induced toxicity. Overall, this study provides the first insight into the toxicological mechanism of MPs/NPs and CNFs mixtures at the molecular level in freshwater microalgae.

Abstract:Nanoplastics (NPs, <1000 nm) may adsorb organic pollutants in the aquatic environment, thereby, influencing their bioavailability to organisms. This study aims to investigate the individual and combined toxicity of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and virgin yellow-green fluorescent polystyrene NPs (200 nm) at sub-lethal doses on the marine mussel Perna viridis. Our results demonstrated that both PFOS single and PFOS-NP co-exposure at 1000 μg/L significantly increased PFOS distribution in the gills, gonads, and visceral mass (p < 0.05), compared to the control. Further, PFOS single and PFOS-NP co-exposures at 100 and 1000 μg/L significantly increased the reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in mussel tissues that consequently altered the responses of antioxidant entities including MDA, CAT, SOD, GR, and GST. The transcriptional profiling of oxidative stress-related genes (cyp4, hsp22, hsp60, gst-omega, and gst-pi), showed significantly downregulated expressions at the lowest level of co-exposure (PFOS 10 μg/L) in all tissues, especially in gills, compared to the control group. Overall, the enhanced integrated biomarker response (EIBR) revealed PFOS-NP co-exposure at 1000 μg/L, as the most stressful circumstance to induce mixture toxicity, at which more structural damage to the gills and gonads were observed than single PFOS/NPs exposure. In , the co-exposure significantly enhanced the PFOS bioaccumulation and ROS levels in mussel tissues, resulting in altered antioxidant and genetic responses, suggesting that NPs could affect the distribution of PFOS between P. viridis and seawater. Hence, further studies should be conducted to unveil the interactive toxic effects of NPs and PFOS on marine organisms.

Abstract:Nano- and microplastics pose severe risks to the ecological environment. Nanoplastics (NPs) not only directly affect aquatic organisms, but also adsorb to other pollutants, resulting in compound pollution. Bisphenol F (BPF), an endocrine-disrupting chemical, is increasingly replacing bisphenol A (BPA) and is therefore widely distributed in the environment. In this study, the toxic effects of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) and BPF and their combined exposure on the submerged macrophytes Hydrilla verticillata (H. verticillata) and leaf biofilms, were investigated. Results showed that 10 mg/L PS-NPs and combined exposure to 10 mg/L PS-NPs and 10 mg/L BPF significantly decreased the relative growth rate and chlorophyll content of H. verticillata, whereas BPF exposure alone had no impact on the growth and the contents of photosynthetic pigments in H. verticillata. Individual and combined exposure to PS-NPs and BPF can trigger antioxidant responses such as increased activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and malondialdehyde, as well as higher levels of glutathione S-transferase and glutathione and decreased catalase activity. The results of the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the nanoplastics particles were adsorbed on the surface of plant leaves, explaining their toxic effects, whereas BPF increases the sorption of PS-NPs on the surface of H. verticillata, potentially leading to PS-NPs enrichment in the food chain. The diversity and richness of the microbial community were altered by exposure to PS-NPs and BPF individually and in combination. The current study is the first to assess the effects of PS-NPs and BPF exposure on the growth, physiological characteristics, and leaf biofilm properties of submerged macrophytes.

Abstract:Nanoplastics and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is one of the emerging environmental contaminants and a widely used engineering nanomaterial, and their biological toxicity has been frequently studied. However, there has been no research on the combined exposure of these two totally different shape nanoparticles. To explore their potential threat to freshwater ecosystems, Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) was exposed to concentration gradients of polystyrene nanoplastics (Nano-PS) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The physiological analysis and whole-transcriptome sequencing were integrated to certify the cytotoxicity. As the physiological results showed, the low concentration (5 mg/L) of these two nanoparticles showed a stimulation on the growth (6.49%-12.2%) and photosynthesis (0-7.6%), and the coexposure was slightly higher than individuals. However, other concentrations showed inhibitory effect, especially at high concentration (50 mg/L), and all physical signs and electron microscope images showed obvious cytotoxicity. Compared with the individuals, the coexposure showed an antagonistic effect induced by the heterogeneous agglomeration which decreased the surface toxicity and the contact with algae of nanomaterials. Transcriptome results showed that coexposure treatment had the fewest differential genes, and the primary effects embodied in the disturbances of cellular and metabolic processes which were superior to the individuals. In the 50 mg/L Nano-PS, the translation process was significantly disordered, and MWCNTs could disrupted the photosynthesis, multiple metabolism processes, membrane transport, and translation. These findings demonstrated the aquatic toxic mechanism from cellular and metabolic processes of Nano-PS and MWCNTs for M. aeruginosa and provided valuable data for environmental risk assessment of them.

Abstract:Nanoplastics (NPs), as a type of newly emerging pollutant, are ubiquitous in various environmental systems, one of which is coexistence with organic pollutants in wastewater, potentially influencing the pollutants' biodegradation. A knowledge gap exists regarding the influence of microbial consortium and NPs interactions on biodegradation efficiency. In this work, a 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) biodegradation experiment with presence of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) with particle sizes of 100 nm (PS 100 ) or 20 nm (PS 20 ) was conducted to verify that PS-NPs had noticeable inhibitory effect on DCP biodegradation in a size-dependent manner. PS 100 at 10 mg/L and 100 mg/L both prolonged the microbial stagnation compared to the control without PS-NPs; PS 20 exacerbated greater, with PS 20 at 100 mg/L causing a noticeable 6-day lag before the start-up of rapid DCP reduction. The ROS level increased to 1.4-fold and 1.8-fold under PS 100 and PS 20 exposure, respectively, while the elevated LDH under PS 20 exposure indicated the mechanical damage to cell membrane by smaller NPs. PS-NPs exposure also resulted in a decrease in microbial diversity and altered the niches of microbial species, e.g., they decreased the abundance of some functional bacteria such as Brevundimonas and Comamonas , while facilitated some minor members to obtain more proliferation. A microbial network with higher complexity and less competition was induced to mediate PS-NPs stress. Functional metabolism responded differentially to PS 100 and PS 20 exposure. Specifically, PS 100 downregulated amino acid metabolism, while PS 20 stimulated certain pathways in response to more severe oxidative stress. Our findings give insights into PS-NPs environmental effects concerning microflora and biological degradation.

Abstract:The rapid development of aquaculture industry has provided a large amount of high-quality animal protein, while the food safety caused by microplastics and nanoplastics (MP/NPs) has become a major concern. In addition, recent evidence has shown the potential toxic effect of PE-MP/NPs, highlighting the need for further research into their environmental and health impacts. Chronic exposure of polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) and nanoplastics (PE-NPs) on adult zebrafish were conducted in the present study for 21 d. Organ-dependent oxidative damage induced by MP/NPs was observed. Insignificant differences in neurotoxicity and dysbiosis of gut microbiota were found between MPs and NPs. Changes in glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT), lipid peroxidation (LPO), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) showed that MP/NPs induced oxidative damage in gill and intestinal cells of zebrafish. The inhibited AChE activity suggested the potential neurotoxicity of microplastics and nanoplastics (MP/NPs). In addition, chronic exposure increased the alpha-diversity of intestinal microbiota. At the phylum level, the average relative abundance of Proteobacteria increased from 29.73% (control group) to 66.10% (microplastics), 54.84% (nanoplastics) and 60.03% (combined exposure), respectively. Tenericutes decreased from 55.43% (control group) to 20.02% (microplastics), 22.44% (nanoplastics) and 31.77% (combined exposure), respectively. Overall, this study provides new insights and objective evidence for the toxicity assessment of PE-MPs.

Abstract:Micro/nanoplastics can act as vectors for organic pollutants and enhance their toxicity, which has been attributed to the ingestion by organisms and the "Trojan horse effect". In this study, we disclosed a non-ingestion pathway for the toxicity enhancement effect of nanoplastics. Initially, the combined toxicity of polystyrene microplastics (40 μm) or nanoplastics (50 nm) with three disinfection byproducts (DBPs) to a marine polychaete, Platynereis dumerilii, was investigated. No toxic effect was observed for the micro/nanoplastics alone. The microplastics showed no effect on the toxicity of the three DBPs, whereas the nanoplastics significantly enhanced the toxicity of two aromatic DBPs when the polychaete was in its non-feeding early life stage throughout the exposure period. The microplastics showed no interaction with the P. dumerilii embryos, whereas the nanoplastics agglomerated strongly on the embryonic chorion and fully encapsulated the embryos. This could contribute to higher actual exposure concentrations in the microenvironment around the embryos, as the concentrations of the two aromatic DBPs on the nanoplastics were 1200 and 120 times higher than those in bulk solution. Our findings highlight an important and previously overlooked mechanism by which nanoplastics and organic pollutants, such as DBPs, pose a higher risk to marine species at their vulnerable early life stages. This study may contribute to a broader understanding of the environmental impacts of plastic pollution and underscore the necessity to mitigate their risks associated with DBPs.
Enhanced neurotoxic effect of PCB-153 when co-exposed with polystyrene nanoplastics in zebrafish larvae

Abstract:Nanoplastics (NPs) and persistent organic pollutants such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are ubiquitous aquatic pollutants. The coexistence of these pollutants in the environment emphasises the need to study their combined toxicity. NPs can cross biological membranes and act as vectors for other pollutants, whereas PCBs are known for their ability to bioaccumulate and biomagnify. The present work aimed to study the combined toxicity of polystyrene NPs and PCB-153 using physiological (development, heart rate, respiration), behavioural (swimming behaviour) and molecular (transcriptome) endpoints in zebrafish larvae. The results show that exposure to NPs, PCB and their mixture significantly affected the development and respiration in zebrafish larvae. Larvae co-exposed to NPs and PCB exhibited significant hyperlocomotion, whereas no such effect was observed after exposure to NPs or PCB alone. The transcriptomic results revealed that NPs exposure significantly affected several pathways associated with DNA compaction and nucleosome assembly, whereas PCB exposure significantly affected critical neurogenic pathways. In contrast, co-exposure to NPs and PCB generated multi-faceted toxicity and suppressed neurobehavioural, immune-related and detoxification pathways. The study highlights the complex interplay between NPs and PCBs, and documents how the two toxicants in combination give a stronger effect than the single toxicants alone. Understanding the mixture toxicity of these two pollutants is important to assess the environmental risks and developing effective management strategies, ultimately safeguarding ecosystems and human health.

Abstract:Pollution with complex mixtures of contaminants including micro- and nano-plastics (MNPs) and organic pollutants like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) poses a major threat to coastal marine ecosystems. Toxic mechanisms of contaminant mixtures are not well understood in marine organisms. We studied the effects of single and combined exposures to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon phenanthrene (Phe) and MNPs mixture with sizes of 70 nm, 5 μm and 100 μm on the immune health and oxidative stress parameters in the thick-shell mussel Mytilus coruscus . Immune cells (hemocytes) were more sensitive to the pollutant-induced oxidative stress than the gills. In hemocytes of co-exposed mussels, elevated mortality, lower lysosomal content, high production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and decrease mitochondrial were found. Disparate responses of antioxidant enzymes in the hemolymph (e.g. increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity without a corresponding increase in catalase (CAT) in Phe exposures and an increase in CAT without a change in SOD in MNPs exposures) suggests misbalance of the antioxidant defense in the pollutant-exposed mussels. Gill lacked pronounced oxidative stress response showing a decline in ROS and antioxidant levels. Tissue-specific single and combined effects of Phe and MNPs suggest variation in bioavailability and/or different sensitivity to these pollutants in the studied tissues. Notably, the combined effects of MNPs and Phe were additive or antagonistic, showing that MNPs do not enhance and occasionally mitigate the toxic effects of Phe on the hemocytes and the gills of the mussels. Overall, our study sheds light on the impact of long-term exposure to MNPs and Phe mixtures on mussels, showing high sensitivity of the immune system and modulation of the Phe toxicity by MNPs co-exposure. These findings that may have implications for understanding the impacts of combined PAH and MNPs pollution on the health of mussel populations from polluted coastal habitats.

Abstract:Abstract As xenobiotics in the environment, microplastics and nanoplastics have become ever-present in the environment, especially in terrestrial environment. However, a critical issue is that these anthropogenic contaminants are toxic to some terrestrial microorganisms, and the results of that toxic interaction over time can significantly impact microbial community structure and function, with unknown ramifications for ecosystem health. This viewpoint highlights the fact that, considering the diverse array of MPs/NPs, the broad dose range, and the presence of co-contaminants (e.g., retained organic and elemental pollutants, polymer additives) associated with these materials, their risk calculus to microbiome in terrestrial environment is incredibly complex. Short- and long-term dose-response that spans environmentally relevant concentrations and includes appropriate levels of analyte complexity (additives, co-contaminants). This should include microcosm studies that enable assessment of 'omic' parameters over the long term, as well as detailed assessment of impacts on soil microbiome function. We also need to understand impacts on eukaryotic microbes. In conclusion, for both toxicity and benefit, we should focus more on the dynamics of impacts on the microbiome. As some populations are inhibited, others increase. It is not because the plastics are conveying benefit directly but because more sensitive species are decreasing, which frees up resources from less competition. Those changes then have additional consequences, such as shifts in predator species and nutrient cycling and redox conditions. Graphical Abstract
[Long-term development of carotid stenosis treated by endovascular means: a prospective study in a neurovascular unit].

Abstract:AIMS Even today, unlike endarterectomy, long-term development in carotid angioplasty has still not been well defined. The aim of this study is to describe both the short- and long-term development and the rate of restenosis in a consecutive series of patients with carotid stenosis who underwent endovascular treatment at the Hospital Universitario La Fe; a distinction is made between patients with and without symptoms. PATIENTS AND METHODS From 1999 to 2010, 426 patients were submitted to a carotid angioplasty (25.5% were asymptomatic patients). Clinical follow-ups were conducted in the case of 374 patients. They had annual check-ups and every year a neurosonological study was performed. The aim was to determine what complications occurred during the first 30 days, as well as the long-term complications, to establish the rate of restenosis and to evaluate possible differences between patients with and without symptoms. RESULTS The morbidity and mortality rate in the first month was 4.2% (4.4% in symptomatic patients and 3.8% in asymptomatic patients). The mean follow-up time was 55 months: 8% of patients presented strokes, 11% suffered from myocardial infarct and 24.3% died, with no significant differences between patients with or without symptoms. The rate of restenosis was 17.3% at five years, 7.5% equal to or above 50% and, of those, 1.1% were symptomatic. Five patients with significant restenosis were successfully treated with endovascular techniques. CONCLUSIONS Carotid angioplasty is an effective, safe technique in the hands of an experienced professional; our findings are good, both in the short and the long term, with a low rate of restenosis. If this latter condition occurs, vascular intervention techniques are safe and efficient.
The co-presence of polystyrene nanoplastics and ofloxacin demonstrates combined effects on the structure, assembly, and metabolic activities of marine microbial community

Abstract:Nanoplastic is increasing in environments and can address toxic effects on various organisms. Particle size, concentration, and surface functionalization most influence nanoplastic toxicity. Besides, nanoplastic can adsorb other contaminants (e.g., antibiotics) to aggravate its adverse effects. The combined effects of nanoplastics and antibiotics on planktonic/benthic microbial communities, however, are still largely unknown. In this study, the combined effects of polystyrene nanoplastic and ofloxacin on the structure, assembly, and metabolic activities of marine microbial communities were investigated based on amplicon sequencing data. The results mainly demonstrate that: (1) nanoplastic and ofloxacin have greater impacts on prokaryotic communities than eukaryotic ones; (2) niche breadths of planktonic prokaryotes and benthic eukaryotes were shrank with both high nanoplastic and ofloxacin concentrations; (3) increased ofloxacin mainly reduces nodes/edges of co-occurrence networks, while nanoplastic centralizes network modularity; (4) increased nanoplastic under high ofloxacin concentration induces more differential prokaryotic pathways in planktonic communities, while benthic communities are less influenced. The present work indicates that co-presence of nanoplastics and ofloxacin has synergistic combined effects on community structure shifts, niche breadth shrinking, network simplifying, and differential prokaryotic pathways inducing in marine microbial communities, suggesting nanoplastics and its combined impacts with other pollutions should be paid with more concerns.

Abstract:Micro(nano)plastics (MNPs) are a growing problem as persistent environmental pollutants. Here, we investigated the impact of MNPs on microorganisms in aquatic microbial floc exposed to NPs (80 nm) and MPs (8 mu m) for 35 days. Water quality indicators were tested weekly and microbiological analyses were conducted on Day 7 and 28 after exposure. The results showed that there were significant differences in the levels of total ammonia nitrogen or nitrite between the MNPs groups and the control group, spanning from Day 7 to Day 28. For the microbial response, microbial community richness in the NPs and MPs groups were significantly increased at Day 7. Functional prediction showed that the relative abundances of bacteria associated with the "Forms Biofilms", "Potentially Pathogenic", "Plastic Degradation" and nitrogen cycle processes were significantly different after MNPs exposure. The results suggest that MNPs had no significant effect on the microbial diversity of mature microbial flocs. Findings suggest MPs could cause an increase in the relative abundance of potentially pathogenic bacteria, while NPs do not. In addition, stress associated with MNPs affected the nitrogen cycle of microorganisms, and NPs exerted greater impacts than MPs. Findings from this study further our understanding of the impact of MNPs at environmentally relevant concentrations on microorganisms in aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:In recent years, the adverse effects of nanoplastics (NPs) and pyriproxyfen on aquatic environments have attracted widespread attention. However, research on their combined exposure to aquatic organisms could be more extensive. This work evaluated the acute and chronic toxic effects of polystyrene NPs (PS-NPs) and pyriproxyfen on Daphnia magna (D. magna) under their combined exposure conditions. The addition of PS-NPs within 24 h reduced the acute toxicity of pyriproxyfen to D. magna, resulting in an increase in the 24-h EC50 values of pyriproxyfen on D. magna from 0.24 mg/L to 0.35, 0.51, and 1.26 mg/L, respectively when 1, 5, and 10 mg/L of PS-NPs were added. Compared with PS-NPs, pyriproxyfen significantly disturbed the growth and reproduction of D. magna in the chronic toxicity test at 21 days. The adverse effects caused by pyriproxyfen were alleviated when PS-NPs and pyriproxyfen were co-exposed. In addition, it was observed that the addition of pyriproxyfen resulted in less PS-NPs uptake by D. magna using a time-gated imaging technique. These findings provide new insight into the combined toxic effects of NPs and pyriproxyfen on the reproduction and growth of D. magna, and it is important to understand the effects of complex pollutants on aquatic systems. Moreover, it has provided an important scientific basis for environmental protection and sustainable development.

Abstract:Microplastics are regarded as ubiquitous pollutants in the ocean and have attracted worldwide concerns. Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P), one of typical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), is commonly detected in marine environment. Once coexisted, the microplastics and B[a]P may interact with each other and result in combined toxicity to organisms, and these remain to be systematically elucidated. Thus, this study aims to investigate (i) the effects of single micro-sized polystyrene (mPS), polyethylene terephthalate (mPET), and B[a]P on cell growth of Chaetoceros muelleri ; and (ii) the interaction of microplastics and B[a]P, and their combined effects on C. muelleri . The results showed that both single microplastics and B[a]P at a high concentration of 150 μg/L inhibited the growth of C. muelleri . For single treatment of microplastics, stronger inhibition effects on microalgae was caused by mPET than that of mPS, with the highest IR of 25.23 and 11.17%, respectively. This may be attributed to the obvious surface roughness of mPET. By comparison, the combined effects of microplastics and B[a]P significantly inhibited the growth of C. muelleri as compared with the single treatment of B[a]P ( P < 0.05). Synergistic effect was found in the combination of microplastics with B[a]P at high concentrations of 150 μg/L. Interestingly, the antagonistic effect on C. muelleri was observed in the combined treatment of microplastics and B[a]P at low concentrations of 10 μg/L. In addition, the pollutants reduced the content of photosynthetic pigments in microalgal cells. The SOD and MDA content of microalgae increased in the early stage of exposure to pollutants (e.g., Days 1 and 5), but decreased in the later stage (Day 15) compared with the control group. The decreased superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity in single and composite systems may indicate that the antioxidative enzymatic system of microalgae has been inhibited or destroyed. This study will be helpful to further explore the ecological threats of microplastics and PAHs to the marine ecosystem.

Abstract:The pervasive presence of nanoplastics (NPs) in marine environments poses a threat to marine organisms. Gills, as the organ in direct contact with the environment in marine invertebrates, maybe the first to accumulate NPs. To date, the toxic effects of NPs on the gills of marine invertebrates are still largely unknown. In this study, the response of multiple biomarkers (i.e., total antioxidant capacity, the activity of acetylcholine, ion content and transport enzyme, metabolic enzymes, and lipids content) in mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed to polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) for 7 days were evaluated. Significant inductions of total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and inhibition of acetylcholine (AChE) activity were detected after 7 days of PS-NPs exposure. PS-NPs also triggered significant alteration in ion content (Na + and K + ) and suppressed the activities of the ion transport enzyme (Na + /K + -ATPase). Moreover, we found the activity of metabolic enzymes (succinate dehydrogenase and pyruvate kinase) and lipids content (triacylglycerol and cholesterol) were significantly altered, suggesting the interference of PS-NPs on energy metabolism and lipid metabolism. This investigation provides substantial information to understand the physical responses of invertebrate gills to PS-NPs exposure. Given the crucial ecological roles of invertebrates, the presence of PS-NPs in the marine environment may have far-reaching impacts on population abundance, biodiversity, and stability of the marine ecosystem.
