Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) remediation remains a challenge, especially for real samples such as aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF) for fire-fighting and PFAS foam fractionate concentrates (FF) produced from the water treatment processes. In this study, electrochemical advanced oxidation process (EAOP) using boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode to activate persulfate (PS) was investigated. The results shown that the electrochemical activation of PS significantly enhanced the removal of PFAS, including oxidation and defluorination. Under the optimal conditions (initial current density of 40 mA/cm2, 5 mM PS, initial pH 3.8), both 50 μM PFOA and 50 μM PFOS reached ∼100 % removal within 2 h, and 60.4 % and 33.1 % defluorination, respectively. By monitoring the degradation intermediates, the degradation pathways and kinetics of PFOA and PFOS were studied, which indicated the excellent capability of BDD/PS process towards the PFAS remediation. In addition, the optimal BDD/PS process was applied to degrade AFFF and FF samples, and the total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay was used to measure the defluorination effect. The results were unprecedented with a surprising >100 % defluorination for 28 PFAS tested. This research can contribute to the development of a sustainable and efficient technology for PFAS remediation, ultimately mitigating the environmental and health risks associated with these persistent contaminants.

Abstract:Ultrasound (US)-assisted electrochemical oxidation (EO) has previously demonstrated its ability to degrade perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). However, the mechanisms of direct electron transfer and indirect oxidation by reactive oxygen species (ROS), as well as the involvement of these ROS, are unclear, particularly with the peroxydisulfate (PDS) electrolyte and the added effect of US. In this study, an US/EO/PDS system was first investigated, achieving nearly 100 % and 80.01 % defluorination for PFOA and perfluorooctane sulfonate, respectively (within 3 h). This US/EO/PDS system exhibited remarkable stability, pH tolerance, and practicality. Further experimental and theoretical studies revealed that the predominant mechanism of PFOA defluorination was indirect oxidation via ROS, rather than direct oxidation at the anode. Although none of these ROS could initiate the degradation of PFOA without additional energy, both ROS (SO center dot(4) > center dot OH > O-1(2) > O center dot(2)) and US/EO contributed to the initial step of PFOA defluorination. Furthermore, US enhanced the generation of ROS and the direct oxidation (electron transfer) ability of EO. The electrons were transferred from PFOA to PDS via the electrode assembly. This study clarified, for the first time, the synergistic effect of US/EO/PDS and the involvement of direct and indirect ROS oxidation in defluorination of PFOA, which shows potential for developing US and EO technology for complete degradation of polyfluoroalkyl substances.
An Energy Efficient Process for Degrading Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) Using Strip Fountain Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an artificially synthesized per-fluorinated chemical widely used in industry. It is often released into the environment without treatment and causes pollution in groundwater. In this paper, we employed a strip fountain dielectric barrier discharge (SF-DBD) plasma source to degrade PFOA from the water. The effects of power supply mode, discharge gases, pH, the conductivity of the solution, concentration, etc., on the degradation efficiency were studied. For a 200 mL sample of 75 mg/L PFOA, a 99% degradation efficiency with a 204.5 μg/kJ energy production rate was achieved using an average power of 43 W negative pulse argon plasma for 50 min at atmospheric pressure. The total organic carbon concentration (TOC) decreased by 63% after a 60 min treatment. The SF-DBD proves to be a promising and energy-saving technique to efficiently remove PFOA from water.

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an artificially synthesized perfluorinated chemical widely used in industries. It is often released into the environment without treatment, which causes pollution in groundwater. Recently, we have reported a rapid and efficient removal of PFOA in aqueous solution by using a fountain-strip dielectric barrier discharge reactor (SF-DBD). This design allows for the gaseous-liquid interaction to happen in a large space at atmospheric pressure, so it is a promising method to efficiently remove PFOA from water. Recently, we reported the effects of the process parameters, including power mode, pulse time, sinusoidal wave discharge, the discharge gas, initial concentration, pH, conductivity, and positive and negative discharges, on the efficiency of this method for PFOA degradation. Understanding the reaction mechanism is key to further improve the efficiency of the system. In this work, we reported the decomposition mechanism of the SF-DBD for PFOA degradation. The mass spectrum (MS) showed that PFOA was degraded to perfluoroheptanoic acid, perfluorohexanoic acid, perfluoropentanoic acid, perfluorobutanoic acid, perfluoropropionic acid, and trifluoroacetic acid after the plasma treatment. The optical emission spectroscope (OES) and the radical scavenger experiments indicated that the excited argon atoms and hydroxyl radicals played a major role in PFOA degradation, while the contributions from the solvated electrons (e(aq)(-)), superoxide anion radical (center dot O2-), and singlet oxygen (1O(2)) were negligible in initiating the cleavage reaction.

Abstract:The mineralization of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was investigated in electrochemical oxidation process (EC) with the assistance of low frequency ultrasound (US). The electrochemical degradation of PFOA was enhanced under the synergic effects of Ti/SnO2-Sb/Ce-PbO2 anode and US (20 kHz and 52 W). The influences of PFOA initial concentrations on its degradation were studied in EC and US-EC systems, while the effects of applied current densities were investigated in US-EC system. With the assistance of US, the increases of pseudo-first-order kinetic rate constant from 0.017 to 0.031 min(-1), defluorination efficiency from 75.9% to 87.9%, mineralization efficiency from 71.9% to 86.1% and mineralization current efficiency from 0.66% to 0.77% were obtained at current density of 15 mA cm(-2) and PFOA initial concentration of 60 mg L-1 during the reaction time of 180 min. The production and quenching of center dot OH were tested to emphasize the function of US in electrochemical mineralization of PFOA. In US-EC system, the electrochemical degradation performance of PFOA was enhanced not because of cavitation under US, but possibly because of the collapse of bubbles, anode surface cleaning, fast electron transfer on anode and higher center dot OH production under the assistance of US. Abstract:Aqueous perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) elimination has raised significant concerns due to its persistence and bioaccumulation. Although β-PbO2 plate anodes have shown efficient mineralization of PFOA, it remains unclear whether PFOA can be effectively degraded using β-PbO2 reactive electrochemical membrane (REM). Herein, we assessed the performance of Ti/SnO2-Sb/La-PbO2 REM for PFOA removal and proposed a possible degradation mechanism. At a current density of 10 mA/cm2 and a membrane flux of 8500 (liters per square meter per hour, LMH), the degradation efficiency of 10 mg/L PFOA was merely 8.8%, whereas the degradation efficiency of 0.1 mg/L PFOA increased to 96.6%. Although the porous structure of the β-PbO2 REM provided numerous electroactive sites for PFOA, the generated oxygen bubbles in the pores could block the pore channels and adsorb PFOA molecules. These hindered the protonation process and significantly impeded the degradation of high-concentration PFOA. Quenching experiments indicated that •OH played dominant role in PFOA degradation. The electrical energy per order to remove 0.1 mg/L PFOA was merely 0.74 Wh/L, which was almost an order of magnitude lower than that of other anode materials. This study presents fresh opportunities for the electrochemical degradation of low-concentration PFOA using β-PbO2 REM.

Abstract:AbstractPer- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have been recently listed as emerging contaminants (ECs) and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) due to their human and environmental health concerns. In the last 10 years, their detection and remediation have progressed significantly. Herein, we critically review recent developments in electrochemical advanced oxidation process (EAOP) towards their remediation. Particular attentions are paid to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which present the main concerns of PFASs at this time. Due to the persistence of those PFASs, other remediation approaches may experience difficulty in degrading them, whilst EAOP has demonstrated success. The fundamentals of EAOP are highlighted and the scale-up application is discussed regarding the future research directions.
Synergistic Degradation Of Pfas In Water And Soil By Dual -Frequency Ultrasonic Activated Persulfate

Abstract:Ultrasound (US) can degrade per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by the cavitation or pyrolysis effect. In this study, we find that the US equipment typically used in a common laboratory, such as 20 kHz and 43 kHz for cleaning or homogenisation, can degrade PFAS, although the process is slow (with approximately 14.6% and 20.1% defluorination after 6 h, respectively). To accelerate the degradation process, a dual-frequency US is combined with persulfate (PS) to synergistically degrade PFAS in water and soil. Typical PFAS including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (6:2 FTS) are used to evaluate the degradation performance of dual-frequency US/PS in water. After 6 h of degradation, the defluorination percentage is, from highest to lowest, PFOA (100 +/- 1.2%) > 6:2 FTS (86.9 +/- 0.9%) > PFOS (46.5 +/- 1.0%). Interestingly, the dual-frequency US/PS process can also efficiently degrade PFAS in the contaminated soil, with a 62-71% degradation of 14 PFAS (28 is the maximum number of PFAS that can be quantitatively monitored), representing an encouraging progress. Finally, the degradation pathways and kinetics of PFOA are studied by monitoring the degradation intermediates, and by indicating the combination of the dual-frequency US/PS is not simply addition with each other, but with a synergistic effect of degradation.
Removal of PFAS from Aqueous Solution Using PbO2 from Lead-Acid Battery.

Abstract:Whilst advanced electrochemical oxidation can break down per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), the requirement for expensive electrode materials usually prevents its widespread application. Here we use an industrial material of lead peroxide (PbO2) from a lead-acid battery to break down PFAS including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), and 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (6:2 FTS). By optimising the PbO2 panel (activating and doping) and working conditions including supporting electrolyte (1 L 10 mM Na2SO4), initial concentration (10 μM), temperature (room temperature), current density (5 A for a 10 cm × 10 cm PbO2 panel) etc., we successfully remove > 99% PFAS (individual PFAS monitored via HPLC-MS) whilst mineralising ∼59% PFOA (defluorination, F- released and monitored via F-ISE, fluoride-ion selective electrode). By studying the pseudo-first-order kinetics of the PFAS breakdown (0.0028-0.007 min-1) and defluorination (0.84-5.9 × 10-8 min-1), we assign the difference to the adsorption of PFAS on the PbO2 panel and the appearance of intermediates before the full defluorination. The leaked HF gas (∼10-5 M, collected using 0.25 L 0.1 M NaOH) and Pb2+ (∼12 μM, or ∼ 2.5 ppm) are also confirmed. This study employs an economic industrial material, highlights the contribution of adsorption towards the PFAS removal and breakdown, and identifies the possible leakage of secondary contaminants.
Enhanced Mitigation of Membrane Fouling and Degradation of Perfluorooctanoic Acid in the Treatment of Natural Surface Water Through the Application of Dielectric Barrier Discharge/sulfite

Abstract:The present study employed a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD)/sulfite system to mitigate membrane fouling and enhance the degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in surface water. Results showed that the membrane flux was remarkably enhanced by 93.6%, and the degradation of PFOA showed an impressive increase of 87.9%. The synergistic redox effect of free radicals, including hydroxyl radical (•OH), sulfate radical (SO4∙-), electron (e-/eaq-), su-peroxide anion radicals (∙O2-), and other radical, played a crucial role in mitigating membrane fouling, accounting for 36.26%, 30.10%, 18.69%, 6.75%, and 8.20%, respectively. The correlation analysis revealed that effective removal of UV254 and TOC emerged as the most crucial factors positively contributing to mitigating membrane fouling. Additionally, SO4∙-, •OH, and eaq- were identified as the primary active substances responsible for attacking PFOA, accounting for 41.30%, 25.20%, and 23.70%, respectively. The degradation pathway of PFOA was proposed through analysis using density functional theory and mass spectrometry, reducing the biotoxicity of its degradation products. This study presents a suitable strategy for simultaneous mitigation of membrane fouling and enhancement of PFOA degradation, which holds great potential for advancing the field of water treatment towards practical applications.
Activated Persulfate Oxidation Of Perfluorooctanoic Acid (Pfoa) In Groundwater Under Acidic Conditions

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an emerging contaminant of concern due to its toxicity for human health and ecosystems. However, successful degradation of PFOA in aqueous solutions with a cost-effective method remains a challenge, especially for groundwater. In this study, the degradation of PFOA using activated persulfate under mild conditions was investigated. The impact of different factors on persulfate activity, including pH, temperature (25 degrees C-50 degrees C), persulfate dosage and reaction time, was evaluated under different experimental conditions. Contrary to the traditional alkaline-activated persulfate oxidation, it was found that PFOA can be effectively degraded using activated persulfate under acidic conditions, with the degradation kinetics following the pseudo-first-order decay model. Higher temperature, higher persulfate dosage and increased reaction time generally result in higher PFOA degradation efficiency. Experimental results show that a PFOA degradation efficiency of 89.9% can be achieved by activated persulfate at pH of 2.0, with the reaction temperature of 50 degrees C, molar ratio of PFOA to persulfate as 1: 100, and a reaction time of 100 h. The corresponding defluorination ratio under these conditions was 23.9%, indicating that not all PFOA decomposed via fluorine removal. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer analysis results indicate that both SO4-center dot and center dot OH contribute to the decomposition of PFOA. It is proposed that PFOA degradation occurs via a decarboxylation reaction triggered by SO4-center dot, followed by a HF elimination process aided by center dot OH, which produces one-CF2-unit-shortened perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs, Cn-1F2n-1COOH). The decarboxylation and HF elimination processes would repeat and eventually lead to the complete mineralization all PFCAs.

Abstract:Poly and perfluoroalkyl compounds (PFASs) are a group of chemicals that are widely used and are difficult to purify. Within this group, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), known for its highly polar and strong carbon–fluorine bonds, is a frequently encountered species in surface water, drinking water, and groundwater. In this study, we investigated the efficiency of electrooxidation (EO) in PFOA removal, optimization of EO parameters, and groundwater simulation in a realistic scenario. The EO optimization experiments were performed with a boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode for different values of pH, current density, and inlet concentration, and the effects of different anode materials were investigated for comparison. Under optimum conditions, total organic carbon (TOC) removal of up to 90% was achieved. In the groundwater simulation, we applied optimized EO parameters after obtaining leachates from the soil. A TOC removal of up to 86% was obtained in the EO of simulated groundwater contaminated with PFOA. In the case of realistic leachate simulation, four different leachate treatments were applied to PFOA-contaminated soil, and high TOC removal was achieved in all matrices. Additionally, the EO with BDD was applied to landfill leachate wastewater supplemented with PFOA to monitor the effectiveness of the process. A TOC removal of 85% was achieved, and it was observed that the number of free F-ions increased. The results showed that the BDD EO has a high potential for the treatment of PFOA-contaminated groundwater.

Electrochemical degradation of PFOA and its common alternatives: Assessment of key parameters, roles of active species, and transformation pathway

Abstract:This study investigates an electrochemical approach for the treatment of water polluted with per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), looking at the impact of different variables, contributions from generated radicals, and degradability of different structures of PFAS. Results obtained from a central composite design (CCD) showed the importance of mass transfer, related to the stirring speed, and the amount of charge passed through the electrodes, related to the current density on decomposition rate of PFOA. The CCD informed optimized operating conditions which we then used to study the impact of solution conditions. Acidic condition, high temperature, and low initial concentration of PFOA accelerated the degradation kinetic, while DO had a negligible effect. The impact of electrolyte concentration depended on the initial concentration of PFOA. At low initial PFOA dosage (0.2 mg L-1), the rate constant increased considerably from 0.079 ± 0.001 to 0.259 ± 0.019 min-1 when sulfate increased from 0.1% to 10%, likely due to the production of SO4•-. However, at higher initial PFOA dosage (20 mg L-1), the rate constant decreased slightly from 0.019 ± 0.001 to 0.015 ± 0.000 min-1, possibly due to the occupation of active anode sites by excess amount of sulfate. SO4•- and •OH played important roles in decomposition and defluorination of PFOA, respectively. PFOA oxidation was initiated by one electron transfer to the anode or SO4•-, undergoing Kolbe decarboxylation where yielded perfluoroalkyl radical followed three reaction pathways with •OH, O2 and/or H2O. PFAS electrooxidation depended on the chemical structures where the decomposition rate constants (min-1) were in the order of 6:2 FTCA (0.031) > PFOA (0.019) > GenX (0.013) > PFBA (0.008). PFBA with a shorter chain length and GenX with -CF3 branching had slower decomposition than PFOA. While presence of C-H bonds makes 6:2 FTCA susceptible to the attack of •OH accelerating its decomposition kinetic. Conducting experiments in mixed solution of all studied PFAS and in natural water showed that the co-presence of PFAS and other water constituents (organic and inorganic matters) had adverse effects on PFAS decomposition efficiency.

Abstract:The feasibility of utilizing a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD)/sulfite-ultrafiltration system was investigated in various real water bodies, aiming to clarify the mechanism behind alleviating membrane fouling while synchronously degrading perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) during the treatment process of Yangtze River water. The results demonstrated that the DBD/sulfite pretreatment exhibited remarkable rates of membrane flux mitigation (>84.10 %) and efficient degradation rates of PFOA (>85.13 %), which decreased with increasing pH from 3.0 to 11.0. The presence of anions, cations, and natural organic matter slightly hindered the membrane fouling mitigation and PFOA degradation by quenching free radicals; however, the addition of SO42- had a negligible impact. The mitigation of membrane fouling was attributed to the significant involvement of various radicals, including hydroxyl radical (•OH), sulfate radical (SO4•-), electron (e-/eaq-), su-peroxide anion radicals (•O2-), and other radicals such as SO3•-, exhibiting respective contributions of 33.25 %, 28.49 %, 20.56 %, 11.32 %, and 6.39 % in a synergistic redox effect. The pretreatment effectively reduced standard blocking and cake filtration fouling mechanisms by creating a sparse fouling layer on the membrane surface while increasing its roughness. Additionally, the main active species that played a significant role in the degradation of PFOA were identified as SO4•-, •OH, and eaq-. These species contributed approximately 43.63 %, 24.39 %, and 20.65 % respectively to the degradation process. By employing mass spectrometry and density functional theory, a proposed pathway for PFOA degradation was established, effectively reducing the toxicity associated with its degradation byproducts. This study provides innovative insights into membrane-based water treatment technologies that effectively tackle both membrane fouling mitigation and PFOA degradation.

Abstract:In this study, electrochemical oxidation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA, C7H15CO2H) from aqueous solution was examined in terms of PFOA and total organic carbon (TOC) removal by using Ti/SnO2-Sb2O5/PbO2non-active electrodes. The effects of operating parameters: initial pH (pHo), current density (j), and electrolyte concentration (m) at different time intervals were examined. Specific energy consumption (SEC) was used to determine the process proficiency. The C-C bond between C7F15 was first cleaved and thendegraded into fluoride ions (F−) and short carbon-chain per-fluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs) ((∼C2−C7) such as perfluoroethanoic acid (PFEA: C2F5CO2H), perfluoropropanoic acid (PFPA: C3F7CO2H), perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA: C4F9CO2H), perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA: C5F11CO2H), perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA: C6F13CO2H), perfluoheptanoic acid (PFHpA: C7F14CO2H). These intermediates by-products were determined using the gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis. The rate of PFOA decomposition was followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics. About 82%TOC and 94% PFOA removals were formed at the optimal condition of pHo = 3.58, j=168.34 Am-2, and m = 250 mgL-1 at 120 min of electrolysis with SEC = 593 kWh/kg TOC. A plausible degradation mechanism was also proposed at the optimal treatment condition.

Abstract:Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), normally present in groundwater and surface water, is an emerging environmental contaminants, but is extremely difficult to be degraded due to high energy of the C-F bond. Here, an electrocoagulation (EC) technique coupled with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation was used to deeply degrade PFOS. Results showed that approximately 100% PFOS was removed from the solution in the monopolar serial (MS) mode within 60 min and achieved a high kinetic rate of 0.074 min<sup>-1</sup>, which was significantly higher than those of reported studies (Table S3). Energy consumption (2.06 kWh/kg) in the MS mode was significantly lower than that of Al (52.30 kWh/kg) and Zn (213.50 kWh/kg) electrodes, which further confirmed the potential application prospects of EC technique. The quenching experiments, electron spin response (ESR) analysis, and DFT calculations can verify that ·OH was the main radical from the reaction of Fe<sup>2+</sup>-OH reaction site with PMS. In addition, results from fluorine balance and TOC removal also indicated the complete mineralization and degradation of PFOS in the EC process. Quantum chemical calculations can confirm the PFOS degradation mechanism and key active sites for direct electron transfer and radical attack. After five cycle operations of PFOS degradation, the EC process was still effective in degrading PFOS with a removal efficiency above 98%. Thus, this work provided a novel alternative for the high-effective treatment of PFOS from contaminated environmental water bodies.

Abstract:Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are persistent in environments due to the high energy of C-F bond. Electrochemical oxidation of seven PFCs in aqueous solution on a boron doped diamond (BDD) anode was studied in this study. The kinetics results show that the pseudo-first order kinetic constants of perfluoroalkyl carboxyates and sulfonates increased with the increase of carbon chain length. PFCs decomposition began with a direct one electron transfer from carboxyl or sulfonate group to BDD, and the formed PFCs radicals were decarboxylated or desulfonated to yield the perfluoroalkyl radical which permitted a defluorination reaction between perfluoroalkyl radical and hydroxyl radical. The effects of potential, current density, initial pH, and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) concentration on the removal of PFOA were investigated. The anodic potential played an important role in the decomposition, and the oxidation potential of PFOA was 2.76 vs. SCE/V (saturated calomel electrode.). When the current density increased slightly from 0.12 to 0.59 mA cm(-2). PFOA removal was greatly enhanced from 0 to 97.48%. PFOA decomposition was higher in acidic solution compared to that in the alkaline solution. Abstract:Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are persistent and refractory organic pollutants that have been detected in various environmental matrices and municipal wastewater. Electrochemical oxidation (EO) is a promising remediation technique for wastewater contaminated with PFCs. A number of recent studies have demonstrated that the "non-active" anodes, including boron-doped diamond, tin oxide, and lead dioxide, are effective in PFCs elimination in wastewater due to their high oxygen evolution potential. Many researchers have conducted experiments to investigate the optimal conditions (i.e., potential, current density, pH value, plate distance, initial PFCs concentration, electrolyte, and other factors) for PFCs elimination to obtain the maximal elimination efficiency and current efficiency. The EO mechanism and pathways of PFCs have been clearly elucidated, which undergo electron transfer, Kolbe decarboxylation or desulfonation, hydrolysis, and radical reaction. In addition, the safety evaluation and energy consumption evaluation of the EO technology have also been summarized to decrease toxic ion release from electrode and reduce the cost of this technique. Although the ultrasonication and hydrothermal techniques combined with the EO process can improve the removal efficiency and current efficiency significantly, these coupled techniques have not been commercialized and applied in industrial wastewater treatment. Finally, key challenges facing EO technology are listed and the directions for further research are pointed out (such as combination with other techniques, treatment for natural waters contaminated by low levels of PFCs, and reactor design).

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are pervasive in industrial processes, eliciting public concern upon their release into municipal sewers or the environment. Removing PFAS from the environment has become an urgent need. However, because potential endpoints span from energy-intensive complete mineralization to partial PFAS transformation, understanding and developing metrics for evaluating PFAS treatment can be a challenge. The goal of this study was to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of electrocatalytic degradation of PFAS with boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes using four techniques: LC-MS/MS target analysis, fluoride ion (F − ), adsorbable organofluorine (AOF), and bioaccumulation potential using lipid-bilayer partition (LBP) tests. After 3 hours of electrocatalysis, >99% perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) degradation was achieved and corresponded with 84% conversion to F − , which was substantial – though intentionally not complete – defluorination. For the same 3 hour treatment time, AOF and LBP coefficient were reduced by 95% and 83%, respectively. LBP's detection limit was 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of AOF, so the positive correlation observed between LBP and AOF ( r = 0.86) suggests AOF's practical utility as a design metric for assessing bioaccumulation potential of various organofluorine transformation by-products.
