Abstract:The mineralization of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was investigated in electrochemical oxidation process (EC) with the assistance of low frequency ultrasound (US). The electrochemical degradation of PFOA was enhanced under the synergic effects of Ti/SnO2-Sb/Ce-PbO2 anode and US (20 kHz and 52 W). The influences of PFOA initial concentrations on its degradation were studied in EC and US-EC systems, while the effects of applied current densities were investigated in US-EC system. With the assistance of US, the increases of pseudo-first-order kinetic rate constant from 0.017 to 0.031 min(-1), defluorination efficiency from 75.9% to 87.9%, mineralization efficiency from 71.9% to 86.1% and mineralization current efficiency from 0.66% to 0.77% were obtained at current density of 15 mA cm(-2) and PFOA initial concentration of 60 mg L-1 during the reaction time of 180 min. The production and quenching of center dot OH were tested to emphasize the function of US in electrochemical mineralization of PFOA. In US-EC system, the electrochemical degradation performance of PFOA was enhanced not because of cavitation under US, but possibly because of the collapse of bubbles, anode surface cleaning, fast electron transfer on anode and higher center dot OH production under the assistance of US. Abstract:Ultrasound (US)-assisted electrochemical oxidation (EO) has previously demonstrated its ability to degrade perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). However, the mechanisms of direct electron transfer and indirect oxidation by reactive oxygen species (ROS), as well as the involvement of these ROS, are unclear, particularly with the peroxydisulfate (PDS) electrolyte and the added effect of US. In this study, an US/EO/PDS system was first investigated, achieving nearly 100 % and 80.01 % defluorination for PFOA and perfluorooctane sulfonate, respectively (within 3 h). This US/EO/PDS system exhibited remarkable stability, pH tolerance, and practicality. Further experimental and theoretical studies revealed that the predominant mechanism of PFOA defluorination was indirect oxidation via ROS, rather than direct oxidation at the anode. Although none of these ROS could initiate the degradation of PFOA without additional energy, both ROS (SO center dot(4) > center dot OH > O-1(2) > O center dot(2)) and US/EO contributed to the initial step of PFOA defluorination. Furthermore, US enhanced the generation of ROS and the direct oxidation (electron transfer) ability of EO. The electrons were transferred from PFOA to PDS via the electrode assembly. This study clarified, for the first time, the synergistic effect of US/EO/PDS and the involvement of direct and indirect ROS oxidation in defluorination of PFOA, which shows potential for developing US and EO technology for complete degradation of polyfluoroalkyl substances.

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an artificially synthesized perfluorinated chemical widely used in industries. It is often released into the environment without treatment, which causes pollution in groundwater. Recently, we have reported a rapid and efficient removal of PFOA in aqueous solution by using a fountain-strip dielectric barrier discharge reactor (SF-DBD). This design allows for the gaseous-liquid interaction to happen in a large space at atmospheric pressure, so it is a promising method to efficiently remove PFOA from water. Recently, we reported the effects of the process parameters, including power mode, pulse time, sinusoidal wave discharge, the discharge gas, initial concentration, pH, conductivity, and positive and negative discharges, on the efficiency of this method for PFOA degradation. Understanding the reaction mechanism is key to further improve the efficiency of the system. In this work, we reported the decomposition mechanism of the SF-DBD for PFOA degradation. The mass spectrum (MS) showed that PFOA was degraded to perfluoroheptanoic acid, perfluorohexanoic acid, perfluoropentanoic acid, perfluorobutanoic acid, perfluoropropionic acid, and trifluoroacetic acid after the plasma treatment. The optical emission spectroscope (OES) and the radical scavenger experiments indicated that the excited argon atoms and hydroxyl radicals played a major role in PFOA degradation, while the contributions from the solvated electrons (e(aq)(-)), superoxide anion radical (center dot O2-), and singlet oxygen (1O(2)) were negligible in initiating the cleavage reaction.
Enhanced Mitigation of Membrane Fouling and Degradation of Perfluorooctanoic Acid in the Treatment of Natural Surface Water Through the Application of Dielectric Barrier Discharge/sulfite

Abstract:The present study employed a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD)/sulfite system to mitigate membrane fouling and enhance the degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in surface water. Results showed that the membrane flux was remarkably enhanced by 93.6%, and the degradation of PFOA showed an impressive increase of 87.9%. The synergistic redox effect of free radicals, including hydroxyl radical (•OH), sulfate radical (SO4∙-), electron (e-/eaq-), su-peroxide anion radicals (∙O2-), and other radical, played a crucial role in mitigating membrane fouling, accounting for 36.26%, 30.10%, 18.69%, 6.75%, and 8.20%, respectively. The correlation analysis revealed that effective removal of UV254 and TOC emerged as the most crucial factors positively contributing to mitigating membrane fouling. Additionally, SO4∙-, •OH, and eaq- were identified as the primary active substances responsible for attacking PFOA, accounting for 41.30%, 25.20%, and 23.70%, respectively. The degradation pathway of PFOA was proposed through analysis using density functional theory and mass spectrometry, reducing the biotoxicity of its degradation products. This study presents a suitable strategy for simultaneous mitigation of membrane fouling and enhancement of PFOA degradation, which holds great potential for advancing the field of water treatment towards practical applications.
Exploring key reaction sites and deep degradation mechanism of perfluorooctane sulfonate via peroxymonosulfate activation under electrocoagulation process

Abstract:Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), normally present in groundwater and surface water, is an emerging environmental contaminants, but is extremely difficult to be degraded due to high energy of the C-F bond. Here, an electrocoagulation (EC) technique coupled with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation was used to deeply degrade PFOS. Results showed that approximately 100% PFOS was removed from the solution in the monopolar serial (MS) mode within 60 min and achieved a high kinetic rate of 0.074 min-1, which was significantly higher than those of reported studies (Table S3). Energy consumption (2.06 kWh/kg) in the MS mode was significantly lower than that of Al (52.30 kWh/kg) and Zn (213.50 kWh/kg) electrodes, which further confirmed the potential application prospects of EC technique. The quenching experiments, electron spin response (ESR) analysis, and DFT calculations can verify that ·OH was the main radical from the reaction of Fe2+-OH reaction site with PMS. In addition, results from fluorine balance and TOC removal also indicated the complete mineralization and degradation of PFOS in the EC process. Quantum chemical calculations can confirm the PFOS degradation mechanism and key active sites for direct electron transfer and radical attack. After five cycle operations of PFOS degradation, the EC process was still effective in degrading PFOS with a removal efficiency above 98%. Thus, this work provided a novel alternative for the high-effective treatment of PFOS from contaminated environmental water bodies.

Abstract:Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation process (SO4 center dot--AOP) has been considered as a potential PFOA treatment option. The synergistic effect of SO4 center dot- and hydroxyl radicals (HO center dot) favors the mineralization of PFOA. However, research regarding the optimal PFOA degradation pathway with controllable SO4 center dot- and HO center dot is limited. Here, we proposed a cathode-mediated electrochemical process for efficiently removing PFOA through the in situ generation of SO4 center dot- and HO center dot. Iron-nickel codoped carbon aerogel (FexNiC) were designed as cathode for synergistically activating peroxymonosulfonate (PMS) and oxygen (O-2). Fe0.6NiC with optimized CSO4 center dot- (0.385 mM) and C-HO center dot (0.175 mM) exhibited high PFOA degradation efficiency (83.8%), TOC removal (75.9%), and defluorination rate (63.6%). DFT calculations and experimental studies confirmed that SO4 center dot--involved steps promote one-electron transfer from ionic C7F15COO- to SO4 center dot-, and HO center dot-involved steps yield short-chain PFCAs. The actual application for pretreatment and deep-treatment of fluorochemical wastewater in the conventional treatment systems promoted the PFOA mineralization efficiency. It can be preferable to optimize the ratio of CSO4 center dot- and C-HO center dot in this cathode-mediated electrochemical process to rapidly and economically mineralize PFOA.

Abstract:The electrochemical oxidation method is a promising technology for the degradation of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). However, the elimination processes of PFOS are still unknown, including the electron transfer pathway, key reactive sites, and degradation mechanism. Here, we fabricated diatomite and cerium (Ce) co-modified Sb2O3 (D-Ce/Sb2O3) anode to realize efficient degradation of PFOS via peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The transferred electron and the generated hydroxyl radical (•OH) can high-effectively decompose PFOS. The electron can be rapidly transferred from the highest occupied molecular orbital of the PFOS to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the PMS via the D-Ce/Sb2O3 driven by a potential energy difference under electrochemical process. The active site of Ce-O in the D-Ce/Sb2O3 can greatly reduce the migration distance of the electron and the •OH, and thus improving the catalytic activity for degrading various organic micropollutants with high stability. In addition, the electrochemical process shows strong resistance and tolerance to the changing pH, inorganic ions, and organic matter. This study offers insights into the electron transfer pathway and PMS activation mechanism in PFOS removal via electrochemical oxidation, paving the way for its potential application in water purification.

Abstract:The harmful effects on environment and human health caused by the widespread use of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) have appealed much attention. However, traditional advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are usually inefficient for PFOA degradation. In this study, iron species self-doped biochar derived from municipal sludge (ISBC) was synthesized by a simple method of EDTA-citric acid (CA) leaching/pyrolysis, exploring an efficient activation method of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for PFOA degradation. Results showed that most of heavy metals were recovered from the sludge via the EDTA-CA pretreatment, at the same time, the special coral-like porous structure were formed in ISBC. A larger specific surface area and pore volume, as well as uniform Fe and N elements distribution of ISBC facilitated the reaction of surface PMS activation, which contributed to the enhancement in PFOA removal. Notably, it was found that pyridinic nitrogen and ketonic and quinone groups were key active sites, and their mediated singlet oxygen (1O2) was confirmed to be the dominated reactive species for PFOA removal in ISBC/PMS system, instead of the radicals mediated by iron species. Furthermore, a possible PFOA degradation pathway by the nonradical 1O2 oxidation was studied by combining density functional theory (DFT) calculation with experimental results. This study proposes a potential method to recover sludge heavy metals and activate PMS for PFOA and other organics simultaneously, which provides a valuable process for the water treatment and high value utilization of excess sludge.
Improved Ultrafiltration Performance Through Dielectric Barrier Discharge/sulfite Pretreatment: Effects of Water Matrices and Mechanistic Insights

Abstract:The feasibility of utilizing a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD)/sulfite-ultrafiltration system was investigated in various real water bodies, aiming to clarify the mechanism behind alleviating membrane fouling while synchronously degrading perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) during the treatment process of Yangtze River water. The results demonstrated that the DBD/sulfite pretreatment exhibited remarkable rates of membrane flux mitigation (>84.10 %) and efficient degradation rates of PFOA (>85.13 %), which decreased with increasing pH from 3.0 to 11.0. The presence of anions, cations, and natural organic matter slightly hindered the membrane fouling mitigation and PFOA degradation by quenching free radicals; however, the addition of SO42- had a negligible impact. The mitigation of membrane fouling was attributed to the significant involvement of various radicals, including hydroxyl radical (•OH), sulfate radical (SO4•-), electron (e-/eaq-), su-peroxide anion radicals (•O2-), and other radicals such as SO3•-, exhibiting respective contributions of 33.25 %, 28.49 %, 20.56 %, 11.32 %, and 6.39 % in a synergistic redox effect. The pretreatment effectively reduced standard blocking and cake filtration fouling mechanisms by creating a sparse fouling layer on the membrane surface while increasing its roughness. Additionally, the main active species that played a significant role in the degradation of PFOA were identified as SO4•-, •OH, and eaq-. These species contributed approximately 43.63 %, 24.39 %, and 20.65 % respectively to the degradation process. By employing mass spectrometry and density functional theory, a proposed pathway for PFOA degradation was established, effectively reducing the toxicity associated with its degradation byproducts. This study provides innovative insights into membrane-based water treatment technologies that effectively tackle both membrane fouling mitigation and PFOA degradation.

Abstract:Polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl chemicals (PFCs) widely used in lubricants, surfactant, textiles, paper coatings, cosmetics, and fire-fighting foams can release a large deal of organics contaminants into wastewater and pose great risks to the health of humans and eco-environments. Although advanced oxidation processes can effectively deconstruct various organic contaminants via reactive radicals, the stable structure of PFCs makes it difficult to be degraded. Here, we confirm that electrochemical oxidation process coupled with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) reaction can efficiently destroy stable structure of PFCs via electron transfer and meanwhile completely degrade PFCs via generated active radicals. We further studies via capturing and scavenging radicals, and DFT calculations find that electron hydroxyl radials play a dominant role in degrading PFCs. Based on the calculations of adsorption energy and molecular orbital energy we further demonstrate that many active sites on the surface of Ti4O7 (1 0 4) plane can rapidly take part in electrochemical reaction for generating radials and removing organic contaminants. These results give a promising insight towards high-effective and deep degradation of PFCs via electrochemical reaction coupled with advanced oxidation processes, as well as providing guidance and technical support for the remove of multiple organic contaminants.

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is of increasing concern due to its worldwide application and extremely environmental persistence. Herein, we demonstrated the electrochemical degradation of PFOA with high efficiency using the Ti3+ self-doping TiO2 nanotube arrays (Ti3+/TiO2-NTA) anode. The fabricated Ti3+/TiO2-NTA anode exhibited vertically aligned uniform nanotubes structure, and was demonstrated good performance on the electrochemical degradation of PFOA in water. The degradation rate, total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate and defluorination rate of PFOA reached 98.1 %, 93.3 % and 74.8 %, respectively, after electrolysis for 90 min at low current density of 2 mA cm-2. The energy consumption (7.6 Wh L-1) of this electrochemical oxidation system using Ti3+/TiO2-NTA anode for PFOA degradation was about 1 order of magnitude lower than using traditional PbO2 anodes. Cathodic polarization could effectively prolong the electrocatalytic activity of the anode by regenerating Ti3+ sites. PFOA molecular was underwent a rapidly mineralization to CO2 and F-, with only low concentration of short-chain perflfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) intermediates identified. A possible electrochemical degradation mechanism of PFOA was proposed, in which the initial direct electron transfer (DET) on the anode to yield PFOA free radicals (C7F15COO•) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) oxidation were greatly enhanced. This presented study provides a novel approach for the purification of the recalcitrant PFOA from wastewaters.

Abstract:Developing high-performance catalytic systems for eliminating contaminants effectively in water has received a lot of attention. However, the complexity of practical wastewater poses a challenge for degrading organic pollutants. Non-radical active species with strong resistance to interference have shown great advantages in degrading organic pollutants under complex aqueous conditions. Herein, a novel system was constructed by Fe(dpa)Cl 2 (FeL, dpa = N, N' -(4-nitro-1,2-phenylene) dipicolinamide) activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The mechanism study verified that the FeL/PMS system has high efficiency in producing high-valent iron-oxo and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) to degrade various organic pollutants. In addition, the chemical bonding between PMS and FeL was elucidated by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The FeL/PMS system could remove 96% Reactive Red 195 (RR195) in 2 min, which was much higher than other systems involved in this study. More attractively, the FeL/PMS system demonstrated general resistance to interference from common anions (Cl − , HCO 3 − , NO 3 − and SO 4 2− ), humic acid (HA) and pH changes and were thus compatible with various natural waters. This work provides a new approach for producing non-radical active species, which is a promising catalytic system for water treatment.

Abstract:Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are persistent and refractory organic pollutants that have been detected in various environmental matrices and municipal wastewater. Electrochemical oxidation (EO) is a promising remediation technique for wastewater contaminated with PFCs. A number of recent studies have demonstrated that the "non-active" anodes, including boron-doped diamond, tin oxide, and lead dioxide, are effective in PFCs elimination in wastewater due to their high oxygen evolution potential. Many researchers have conducted experiments to investigate the optimal conditions (i.e., potential, current density, pH value, plate distance, initial PFCs concentration, electrolyte, and other factors) for PFCs elimination to obtain the maximal elimination efficiency and current efficiency. The EO mechanism and pathways of PFCs have been clearly elucidated, which undergo electron transfer, Kolbe decarboxylation or desulfonation, hydrolysis, and radical reaction. In addition, the safety evaluation and energy consumption evaluation of the EO technology have also been summarized to decrease toxic ion release from electrode and reduce the cost of this technique. Although the ultrasonication and hydrothermal techniques combined with the EO process can improve the removal efficiency and current efficiency significantly, these coupled techniques have not been commercialized and applied in industrial wastewater treatment. Finally, key challenges facing EO technology are listed and the directions for further research are pointed out (such as combination with other techniques, treatment for natural waters contaminated by low levels of PFCs, and reactor design).
Efficient removal of PFOA with an In2O3/persulfate system under solar light via the combined process of surface radicals and photogenerated holes

Abstract:The environmental persistence, high toxicity and wide spread presence of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in aquatic environment urgently necessitate the development of advanced technologies to eliminate PFOA. Here, the simultaneous application of a heterogeneous In2O3 photocatalyst and homogeneous persulfate oxidation (In2O3/PS) was demonstrated for PFOA degradation under solar light irradiation. The synergistic effect of direct hole oxidation and in-situ generated radicals, especially surface radicals, was found to contribute significantly to PFOA defluorination. Fourier infrared transform (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman, electrochemical scanning microscope (SECM) tests and density functional theory (DFT) calculation showed that the pre-adsorption of PFOA and PS onto In2O3 surface were dramatically critical steps, which could efficiently facilitate the direct hole oxidation of PFOA, and boost PS activation to yield high surface-confined radicals, thus prompting PFOA degradation. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to regulate the operation parameters for PFOA defluorination. Outstanding PFOA decomposition (98.6%) and near-stoichiometric equivalents of fluorides release were achieved within illumination 10 h. An underlying mechanism for PFOA destruction was proposed via a stepwise losing CF2 unit. The In2O3/PS remediation system under solar light provides an economical, sustainable and environmentally friendly approach for complete mineralization of PFOA, displaying a promising potential for treatment of PFOA-containing water.
Peroxymonosulfate activated by natural porphyrin derivatives for rapid degradation of organic pollutants via singlet oxygen and high-valent iron-oxo species

Abstract:The activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by sodium ferric chlorophyllin (SFC), a natural porphyrin derivative extracted from chlorophyll-rich substances, was systematically investigated for facile degradation of bisphenol A (BPA). SFC/PMS is capable of degrading 97.5% of BPA in the first 10 min with the initial BPA concentration of 20 mg/L and pH = 3, whereas conventional Fe2+/PMS could only remove 22.6% of BPA under identical conditions. It demonstrates a prominent flexibility to a broad pH range of 3-11 with complete pollutant degradation. A remarkable tolerance toward concomitant high concentration of inorganic anions (100 mM) was also observed, among which (bi)carbonates can even accelerate the degradation. The nonradical oxidation species, including high-valent iron-oxo porphyrin species and 1O2, are identified as dominant species. Particularly, the generation and participation of 1O2 in the reaction is evidenced by experimental and theoretical methods, which is vastly different from the previous study. The specific activation mechanism is unveiled by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. The results shed light on effective PMS activation by iron (III) porphyrin and the proposed natural porphyrin derivative would be a promising candidate for efficient abatement of recalcitrant pollutants toward complicated aqueous media in wastewater treatment.
Enhanced decomposition of long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (C9−C10) by electrochemical activation of peroxymonosulfate in aqueous solution

Abstract:The decomposition of long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs), including perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), were investigated by electrochemical activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) on porous Ti/SnO2-Sb membrane anode. The results indicated that PMS activation could efficiently promote PFNA/PFDA decomposition, with pseudo-first-order rate constants about 3.12/2.06 times as compared with that of direct electro-oxidations. The energy consumptions of PFNA and PFDA decomposition were 36.31 and 37.46 kWh·m-3·order-1, respectively. The quantitative detection results of •OH with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) demonstrated that PMS activation promoted •OH formation. The inhibited performance in radical scavengers indicated both •OH and SO4•- might be mainly involved in PFNA decomposition, while SO4•- might be mainly involved in PFDA decomposition during PMS activation process. The mineralization mechanism for long-chain PFCAs decomposition which was mainly by repeating CF2-unzipping cycle via radical reaction based on the intermediates verification and mass balance of C and F, was proposed. These results suggested that electrochemical activation of PMS on porous Ti/SnO2-Sb membrane anode exhibited high efficiency in mineralizing PFNA and PFDA under mild conditions. This work might provide an efficient way for persistent organic pollutants, including, but not limited to long-chain PFCAs elimination from wastewater.

Abstract:The smart eco-friendly biomass energy driven electrical degradation system was established by coupling of glucose fuel cells (GFC) and solar photo-electro-Fenton (SPEF) processes, which was proposed for the green, economical and efficient degradation of perfluorooctanic acid (PFOA). The CoFe alloy nanoparticles with oxygen defects (O*) based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were decorated on polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-driven carbon nanofiber (CNF) membrane to obtain the bifunctional photocathode (CoFe-OVs@CNF) with both extraordinary photo-catalytic and electro-catalytic abilities. PFOA was highly mineralized on CoFe-OVs@CNF through the synergy of photocatalytic oxidation and electro-Fenton processes. Moreover, the energy consumption for degradation was generated from direct electro-oxidation of glucose as the clean power on anode (GFC). The possible mechanism and degradation pathway for PFOA mineralization was investigated in detail according to intermediate analysis, active species verification and the valence state change of Co and Fe on cathode. Besides, the toxicity evolution during PFOA degradation was also evaluated to deeper insight into risk assessment of intermedia products and relative toxicity, intending to prove the potential for practical elimination of PFOA and other toxicity recalcitrant pollutants in wastewater by GFC-SPEF system.
