Abstract:Abstract Statement of problem Computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) zirconia post-cores is one of the options of post crown restoration materials due to their esthetic properties and superior mechanical strength. However, the clinical effect on aesthetics and strength properties is unclear due to the lack of results of their long-term follow-up. Purpose This retrospective clinical study aims to analyze the survival rate, clinical manifestations, and failure factors after CAD/CAM zirconia post-core restoration. Material and methods Clinical and radiographic examinations were performed on 342 patients with 400 teeth for 3–6 years postsurgical follow-up examination. The patients were all received CAD/CAM zirconia post-cores and all-ceramic crowns at the Department of Prosthodontics in the public hospital. The retrospective outcomes were conducted after zirconia post restoration, including survival rate by Kaplan–Meier analysis and findings of manifestations and failure factors. The effects of gender and dental position on survival rate were analyzed by Cox–Mantel Test. Results This study retrospectively evaluated 261 teeth from 229 patients with a 35% drop-out rate. The survival rate was 96.0%, and the success rate was 92.4%. According to the tooth position classification, the survival rate was 100% for 101 anterior teeth, 95.4% for 69 premolars, and 88.3% for 91 molars. According to gender, the survival rate of the male group was 92.3%, while that of the female group was 98.0%, with a significant difference (P < 0.01). The complications included crown fracture (1.9%) periapical inflammation (1.9%), crown debonding (1.1%), percussion abnormal (1.9%) and root fracture (0.8%). Conclusions Within the limitations of this retrospective study, it can be concluded that CAD/CAM zirconia post-cores are clinically promising. Compared with the posterior teeth, CAD/CAM zirconia post-cores are more suitable for anterior teeth.
Similarities and disparities in maternal risk and birth outcomes of white and Japanese-American mothers.

Abstract:This study compares the maternal sociodemographic and prenatal care characteristics and birth outcomes of US resident white and Japanese-American mothers, using data from the state of Hawaii. The specific focus is to determine to what extent these factors can explain variations in newborn maturity and mortality indicators. Single livebirths to resident, non-military dependent white and Japanese-American mothers were selected for analysis from the 1979-1990 linked livebirth-infant death files from Hawaii. Compared with white mothers, Japanese-American mothers were significantly more likely to be married, age 18 years and older, have higher educational attainment, and have adequate prenatal care utilisation. The majority of Japanese-American mothers were born in Hawaii, while the majority of white mothers were born on the US mainland. The mean birthweight of Japanese-American infants was 200 g lighter than that of white infants. Infant mortality rates (IMRs) for both groups were below the US Year 2000 Health Objective. After controlling for maternal sociodemographic and prenatal care factors with logistic regression, Japanese-American infants had significantly higher risks of low birthweight, preterm and very preterm birth and of being small-for-gestational age. These findings indicate that populations with preferential maternal sociodemographic and prenatal care risk indicators may still exhibit higher low birthweight percentages, but achieve comparatively low IMRs.
Gingival health, plaque accumulation, and restoration outcomes in deciduous anterior teeth: evaluating zirconia crowns versus composite resin strip crowns

Abstract:Background: Zirconia crowns, resembling crystals and with enamel-like aesthetics, are recent entrants in pediatric restorative dentistry. Despite growing use, their empirical efficacy remains under-explored. The aim of this study is to compare resin composite strip crowns and premanufactured zirconia crowns on primary maxillary incisors. Methods: In the Pediatric Dental Clinics, 240 primary maxillary incisors (69 patients) were treated with either zirconia (120 teeth) or composite strip crowns (120 teeth). Evaluations of gingival health, plaque, secondary caries, restoration failure, and opposing teeth wear occurred at 3, 6, and 12-month intervals. Results: At 3 months, zirconia crowns showed less gum bleeding (P=0.006) and plaque. Through 6 and 12 months, zirconia crowns exhibited fewer failures but higher opposing teeth wear. Strip crowns indicated greater tooth material loss. Conclusions: Zirconia crowns demonstrated superior gingival health and durability over composite resin strip crowns but caused increased wear on opposing teeth.

Abstract:Background Paediatric‐preformed zirconia crowns have been associated with several issues, primarily their inability to be crimped and the need for extensive tooth preparation. Additionally, the capacity to adjust the size, shape, and fit of these crowns is very limited. Aim To evaluate and compare the fracture strength of four different types of dental crowns intended for paediatric patients. Design The fracture resistance of four types of paediatric crowns was evaluated using the universal testing machine; freshly extracted primary molars received one of the following: preformed zirconia crowns, custom‐made computer‐aided design and computer‐aided manufacturing (CAD–CAM) zirconia crowns, custom‐made CAD–CAM ceramic crowns, and custom‐made CAD–CAM hybrid composite crowns. Abstract:Design: A multi-centre randomised controlled trial was conducted with paediatric patients requiring crowns after pulp therapy. Participants were randomly divided into two groups: Stainless Steel Crown (SCC) (n = 28) and Resin Crown (RC) (n = 28). RCs were fabricated using a 3D printer with a standardised manufacturing process. The assessment was through periapical radiographs, photographs, quantitative light-induced fluorescence, impressions, and clinical assessment. Quigley-Hein plaque index (QHI), gingival index (GI), occlusal wear, and survival were evaluated. Case selection: Participants were selected from two departments of paediatric dentistry at Yonsei University and Kyung Hee University of Dental College. Patients were between 4-7 years old. The tooth must require pulp therapy and crown, be in place for at least 2 years, and be in stable occlusion. Those with systemic illness, disability, poor cooperation, temporomandibular joint disorder, and bruxism were excluded. Data analysis: Analysis was performed at 1 week, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months. QHI and GI were compared between the two groups. Shapiro-Wilk test was used to analyse the normal distribution of occlusal wear. Comparison was completed using Mann-Whitney U and independent t-tests. Survival rates were assessed using Kaplan-Meier analysis and log-rank tests. Results: Fifty-six teeth were included initially, with follow-up on 23 RCs and 25 SSCs due to failure or lack of attendance. RCs exhibited a statistically significant increase in wear, with mean root mean square (RMS) values of 0.064 (+/-0.02) at 3 months, 0.079 (+) at 6 months, and 0.125 (+/-0.05) at 12 months. Whereas SSCs demonstrated minimal wear, with mean RMS values ranging from 0.021 (+/-0.01) to 0.025 (+/-0.01). The QHI scores indicated no significant difference, except at 1 week where RC exhibited increased plaque. The GI scores for RCs were significantly higher at 12 months. The survival rate of RCs was significantly lower (82.1%) compared to SSCs (100%). Conclusions: While RCs offer improved aesthetics over SSCs, they exhibit lower wear resistance and higher plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation. The survival rate of RCs is significantly lower due to fractures. The clinical effectiveness of RCs has not yet been established.
Wear resistance of CAD/CAM one-piece screw-retained hybrid-abutment-crowns made from different restorative materials

Abstract:Introduction: The aim of this study was to measure the wear progress of three high performance polymers (HPP) materials as well as that of zirconia after artificial aging (simulated 2.5- and 5-year of clinical service with thermo-mechanical loading) and compare it with the well-documented wear of lithium disilicate. Methods: Forty implants were used to restore a maxillary first premolar, where the abutment and the crown were manufactured as hybrid-abutment-crown and connected to the implant using a titanium insert. The implants were randomly divided, according to the restorative materials used, into five groups: 3Y-TZP zirconia (Z), lithium disilicate (L), ceramic-reinforced polyetheretherketon (P), nano-hybrid composite resin (C) and polymer-infiltrated ceramic-network (E). All hybrid-abutment-crowns were produced using CAD/CAM technology. A design of a maxillary first premolar was created with an angle of 120° between the buccal and palatal cusps, which were designed as planes. The restorations were adhesively luted onto the titanium inserts, according to the manufacturers' recommendations for each material individually, by means of dual-curing luting resin with the exception of group P, where the blocks were pre-fitted (heat-pressed) with an integrated titanium insert. The suprastructures were assembled onto the implants through titanium screws. The screw channels were sealed with Teflon tape and composite resin filling material that was polished to high-gloss. All specimens underwent 1 200 000 thermo-dynamic loading cycles with 49 N in a dual-axis chewing simulator. Elastomeric impressions were made for all specimens after 600 000 and after 1 200 000 cycles. The corresponding impressions were imaged using a laser scanning microscope and then 3D-analyzed using the software (Geomagic Wrap) to measure the volume loss of the wear area for all specimens. Statistical analysis was performed using Wilcoxon-Test regarding the two different time measurements for each material. For the analysis of the material variable, Kruskal-Wallis test was conducted followed by Mann-Whitney test. Results: Group Z showed statistically the lowest volume loss compared to the other test materials, both after 600 000 and 1 200 000 cycles of artificial aging, with a median value of 0.002 mm3 volume loss after 1 200 000 cycles. In contrast, group E showed the highest volume loss with median values of 0.18 and 0.3 mm3 after 600 000 and 1 200 000 cycles, respectively. Artificial aging had significantly negative effect on the volume loss for all test materials. In addition, the choice of material had statistical influence on the outcome. Conclusion: Monolithic zirconia ceramic demonstrated lower wear than that reported for enamel after simulated 5-year of clinical service, whereas all other test materials showed higher volume loss after artificial aging.
Pitch diversity in alpha-helical coiled coils.

Abstract:Two complementary methods for measuring local pitch based on heptad position in alpha-helical coiled coils are described and applied to six crystal structures. The results reveal a diversity of pitch values: two-stranded coiled coils appear to have pitch values near 150 A; the values for three- and four-stranded coiled coils range closer to 200 A. The methods also provide a rapid and sensitive gauge of local coiled-coil conformation. Polar or charged residues in the apolar interface between coiled-coil helices markedly affect local pitch values, suggesting a connection between pitch uniformity and coiled-coil stability. Moreover, the identification of a skip residue (heptad frame shift) in the hemagglutinin glycoprotein of influenza virus (HA) allows interpretation of local pitch changes. These results on relatively short coiled-coil structures have relevance for the much longer fibrous proteins (many of which have skip residues) whose detailed structures are not yet established. We also show that local pitch values from molecular dynamics predictions of the GCN4 leucine zipper are in striking agreement with the high-resolution crystal structure--a result not readily discerned by direct comparison of atomic coordinates. Taken together, these methods reveal specific aspects of coiled-coil structure which may escape detection by global analyses of pitch.

Abstract:Objectives The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) as a material for prefabricated crown restorations in pediatric dentistry, particularly for restoring primary tooth structure defects. Materials and methods This study analyzed the effects of three surface treatment modalities on PEEK's surface morphology, wettability (as measured by contact angle), and shear bond strength. These treatments included alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) sandblasting alone, and in conjunction with a 98% sulfuric acid pretreatment. Subsequently, an evaluation was conducted to assess the compressive and fatigue properties of self-fabricated PEEK preformed crowns, preformed metal crowns, and preformed zirconia crowns. Results Al 2 O 3 sandblasting followed by sulfuric acid pretreatment significantly enhanced the bond strength of PEEK. PEEK crowns, when compared with stainless steel and zirconia crowns, showed similar compressive and fatigue strengths to zirconia crowns but lower than metal alternatives. Additionally, PEEK crowns required less extensive modification of dental abutments compared to zirconia crowns. Conclusions The study concludes that PEEK prefabricated crown, especially after alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) sandblasting in conjunction with a 98% sulfuric acid pretreatment, exhibits improved bond strength and favorable material characteristics for use in pediatric dental restorations. Clinical relevance The findings highlight the potential of PEEK prefabricated crowns in pediatric dentistry as a viable option for the aesthetic restoration of primary teeth, offering benefits over traditional materials like stainless steel and zirconia in terms of preferable compressive and fatigue strengths and ideal reduction of dental abutments.

Abstract:症例は45才,女性.半年前からの動悸およびめまい発作のため入院した.胸部X線像上CTRは57%で,心電図ではI・aVL・V4-6の異常Q波と著明な左軸偏位を伴う心室内伝導障害がみられた.心筋梗塞又は心筋症の疑いで心血管造影を施行し,左室心尖部のakinesisをみとめたが,冠動脈は正常であつた.左室の拡大はみられなかつたが, LVEDP 36mmHg・CI 2.08l/min/m2と高度の心機能低下を示した.右室心筋生検では, amyloidその他の沈着は認めなかつたが,中等度の心内膜の肥厚を示し, endomyocardial diseaseによる拘束型心筋症と診断した. Holter心電図で発作性心房細動を認めたため, digitalis・disopyramideを投与したところ,最高7秒の心停止を頻発した. RA pacingによる心拍出量の改善が著明であり,かつ伝導障害を伴うため, AV sequential pacingを行ない,症状改善に非常に有効であつた.拘束型心筋症は,本邦では比較的まれな疾患であり,異常Q波・壁運動異常や不整脈の合併に関する詳細な記載はほとんどみられない.異常Q波の成因や,徐脈を伴う本症におけるAV sequential pacingの利点などにつき,文献的考察を加え報告する.
Survival of pre‐formed zirconia crowns in primary teeth: a prospective practice‐based cohort study

Abstract:Background This study aimed to investigate the (1) survival probabilities of prefabricated zirconia crowns (PZCs) placed on primary teeth and (2) identify demographic and tooth‐related factors that might affect survival probability. Methods This study prospectively followed children treated under general anaesthesia by a single practitioner between 2012 and 2020. Demographic variables including the age at treatment, gender and tooth‐related variables including FDI tooth number, crown size used and any procedural complications at postoperative reviews were collected. Results A total of 155 children involving 319 teeth with PZCs were followed up between 12 and 78 months postoperatively with a mean of 38 months. Of the 319 crowns followed, five failures were observed in three patients requiring extraction. Other procedural complications noted included fracture (n = 3), overhangs (n = 3), internal resorption (n = 5) and 24% of crowns showed signs of radiographic changes on postoperative radiographs when these were taken. Age at treatment, tooth type and need for pulp therapy were not statistically associated with clinical success (P > 0.1). Conclusions PZCs provide an aesthetic and durable solution in the management of children with early childhood caries. This study shows very good clinical success and survival extending up to 78 months for PZCs placed on primary teeth under general anaesthesia.

Efficacy evaluation of zirconia crown on primary molars with caries defects

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to estimate the therapeutic effects of preformed metal crown (PMC) and prefabricated zirconia crowns (ZC) on decayed primary morals in children, as well as to analyze the possible influencing factors. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed on the data of 192 patients (aged 3 to 8) in the Stomatological Department of Shenzhen Children's Hospital from October 2021 to December 2021. The decayed mandibular first molars were selected and restored by vital-pulp therapy followed by PMC and ZC, including 96 cases (96 caries) in the PMC group and 96 cases (96 caries) in the ZC group. Oral clinical examination was performed at 3 months, 1 year, and 2 years after treatment, overwiewing the clinical therapeutic effects and periodontal status of PMC and ZC groups, as well as recording the crown integrity, gingival index (GI), probing bleeding index (BI), plaque index (PLI) and various prosthetic indices. Results: No significance differences existed in the periodontal status of PMC and ZC groups at 3 months, 1 year, and 2 years after treatment (P>0.05). However, the GI, BI, and PLI in the PMC group were higher than those in the ZC group at 3 months, 1 year, and 2 years after treatment, and the difference was dramatically significant (P<0.05). No significances difference existed in various prosthetic indices (P>0.05), as well as in the GI, BI, and PLI, between the two groups (P>0.05). No significant differences existed in various prosthetic indices between genders after PMC restoration (P>0.05). The scores of girls in various prosthetic indices after ZC restoration were higher than those of boys (P<0.05). Pearson correlation analysis indicated an inverse correlation between age in the PMC group and the GI, BI, PLI, and FDI indices (P<0.01), rather than in the ZC group (P>0.05). Conclusions: PMC and ZC can be applied to restore deciduous molar caries. The periodontal status of deciduous teeth in ZC group was superior to that in the PMC group. The periodontal status of deciduous teeth in PMC group may be stable with increased age.

Abstract:Background and Aim: Aesthetic alternatives to stainless steel crown for restoring primary molars attain a growing interest. The aim of the study was clinical evaluation and comparison of zirconia and stainless steel crown in primary molars (clinical and radiograph) Methods: A randomized controlled study was conducted on children of age group of 5 to 8 years of age visiting, KVG Dental College and Hospital, Sullia and who were meet the inclusion criteria of the study. The study population was randomly divided into two groups of 24 each. Group I: stainless steel crown, Group II: zirconia crown. Post endodontic tooth preparation was done and selected stainless steel and zirconia crowns followed by cemented using type 1 glass ionomer cement. The subjects was be recalled after 3, 6 and 9 months to check gingival index, oral hygiene index and bone health of the tooth using intraoral periapical radiograph. Results: There was significant increase in score of gingival index and OHI score for both SSC and zirconia crowns after 3 month followed by reduction in score at 6 and 9 months. There was no statistically significant difference in alveolar bone height in both groups (zirconia and SSCs) for 6 months. Conclusion: Zirconia crowns presented to be an excellent choice for primary posterior teeth full coverage restorations. Zirconia crowns performed better than SSCs in the aspect of gingival response and prevention of plaque adhesion. Abstract:Objectives To evaluate the wear resistance of three additively manufactured dental crown materials (NextDent C&B MFH, Saremco print CROWNTEC and Bego VarseoSmile Crown) under two environmental conditions (dry and artificial saliva), two loads (49 N and 70 N) and two surface treatments (polished and glazed). Methods A total of 120 specimens were divided into 24 groups and tested for wear under two loads (49 N and 70 N), surface treatment (polished or glazed), and environment (dry or submerged in artificial saliva). All samples underwent reciprocating wear testing at 1 Hz using a wear simulator, replicating 48 months of In Vivo conditions with a stainless-steel ball as the antagonist. The coefficient of friction (CoF), surface roughness, volumetric and vertical wear loss were measured and statistically analysed. Confocal microscopy assessed the surface properties of crown materials and the antagonists. Results The NextDent material demonstrated the most homogenous wear, with relatively low vertical and volumetric loss across all groups ( p < 0.004). NextDent and Bego materials performed similarly in artificial saliva regardless of the load type ( p > 1.000). The CoF remained below 0.3 for all groups. All groups exhibited significant increases in surface roughness after testing, however, this did not correlate with an increase in the CoF. Confocal analysis revealed material deformities due to load and notable scratch marks on the stainless-steel antagonists. Conclusion It was found that all investigated addtively manufactured materials can be suggested for provisional use. Both vertical loss and volumetric loss results should be included for material evaluation. CoF and surface roughness should be implemented into wear evaluation. Clinical significance This study highlights the practical value of additively manufactured dental crown materials, particularly for provisional restorations. However, their extended use requires careful consideration of individual patient needs, emphasising the need for judicious clinical application evaluation.

Abstract:Background Children with dental caries are treated with stainless steel metal crowns (SSC), but the aesthetics and precision still need to be improved. Currently, both 3D‐printed resin crowns (PRC) and computer‐aided design/computer‐aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) resin crowns (CRC) meet the clinical requirements for crown applications in terms of strength, production time, cost, and aesthetics. Aim This study replaced SSC with customized resin crowns by 3D printing and CAD/CAM. Design In this study, PRC, CRC, and SSC were used for incisor and molar restorations, and 60 crowns were made with 10 for each group. Initial bacterial adherence and biofilm formation on novel restorative materials used in paediatric dentistry

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the initial bacterial adherence and biofilm formation on novel restorative materials in paediatric dentistry and compare the results to stainless steel crown and primary enamel. Materials and methods Twenty-five samples (Diameter = 4 mm) from five restorative materials (Tetric Power Fill light cured for 3 s or 10 s, Fuji II LC, Equia Forte HT Fil, Cention Forte, Stainless-steel crown) and primary enamel were prepared. Four samples served for recording of surface roughness (R a ) using a contact profilometer, 21 samples were incubated in stimulated human saliva for 2 h (initial bacterial adherence) and 72 h (biofilm formation) and served to determine ion releasing and bacterial growth. After 2 and 72 h, the number of colony-forming units (CFU) per ml was counted and expressed in Log 10 CFU/ml. Data were analysed with two-way ANOVA and Tuckey's multiple comparisons test ( p < 0.05). Results All tested materials showed similar initial bacterial adherence ( p > 0.1). Stainless steel crown showed statistically significantly less biofilm formation than all other tested materials ( p ≤ 0.02), except for Fuji II LC ( p = 0.06). In terms of biofilm formation, the differences between all tested materials were not statistically significant ( p ≥ 0.9). Significance Novel restorative materials in paediatric dentistry show similar initial bacterial adherence and biofilm formation. However, compared to other restorative materials, stainless steel crowns demonstrate the lowest level of biofilm formation. Ion-releasing materials may not necessarily show better antimicrobial properties than conventional materials.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate clinical effects of computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) milled zirconia crown in three aspects: aesthetic, contact wear and fracture.METHODS:Sixty patients were divided into two groups.In one group, 35 full contour CAD/CAM zirconia crown were made on molars of 30 patients. The manufacturing process of zirconia crown was as follow. First, the three dimensional(3-D) data of working models, antagonist impression and check records were acquired by 3-D laser scanning Dental wings S50. Then full contour zirconia crowns, which had functional occlusal contacts with antagonistic teeth, and appropriate contact with adjacent teeth were designed with Zeno-CAD(V4.2.5.5.12919) software. ZENOSTAR Zr pure zirconia material was milled in digital controlled machine WIELAND 4030 M1.In the end, the zirconia crown were completed with the method of second sintering and polishing. After clinical try-in, the crown was cemented.In the control group, thirty gold alloy full crown were made and cemented on molars of 30 patients. According to the modified U S Public Health Service Criteria(USPHS) evaluation standard, all crowns were evaluated on the same day, at three months, half a year, one year and two years following delivery. There were three aspects we were focusing on in the evaluation: aesthetic, contact wear(restoration and antagonist), and fracture.RESULTS:In all the prosthesis we evaluated during the 24 months, no fracture was found. Contact wear of crowns varies according to different antagonist teeth.CONCLUSIONS:The zirconia crowns show privilege in aesthesis, toughness and anti-wearing.However, there is contact wear on antagonistic natural teeth. Thus it is a good choice when full zirconia crowns are indicated on two antagonistic teeth in both jaws.
Effects of decontamination protocols on the aesthetic, morphological, and material composition of preformed paediatric crowns

Abstract:Background: Preformed crowns (PCs) are exposed to potentially infectious bodily fluids during the trial fit; however, whether they can be safely re-used remains uncertain. This study determined the effects of decontamination methods on various PCs. The key criteria examined were aesthetic, morphological, and elemental characteristics. Design: This is a laboratory-based experimental study. Stainless steel, pre-veneered stainless steel, and zirconia PCs underwent either: (a) ultrasonic cleaning with EmPower® followed by steam sterilisation, (b) thermal disinfection in an instrument washer with Asepti® Neutraliser/Asepti® followed by steam sterilisation, or (c) immersion in an ortho-phthalaldehyde (OPA) instrument-level disinfectant. The methods were performed for 1, 5, or 10 cycles, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM); red, green, and blue (RGB) value; and luminosity value were tracked (using a histogram of individual colour reference chips in Adobe Photoshop® ) to assess colour changes, and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy to characterise the material composition. Results: Pre-veneered stainless steel crowns showed isolated zones of darkening with loss of luminosity and variations in green and blue values after ultrasonic or thermal washer disinfection combined with steam autoclaving at 5 and 10 cycles. No changes occurred with OPA. Both SEM imaging and EDX analysis identified no changes to crown materials from any of the three reprocessing methods. Conclusions: Reprocessing protocols need to reflect the differing responses of various types of PCs. Repeated steam sterilisation causes slight aesthetic alterations by way of colour instability and loss of luminosity to pre-veneered stainless steel crowns, but no issues with stainless steel or zirconia PCs.
Clinical Outcomes of Monolithic Zirconia Crowns on Posterior Natural Abutments Performed by Final Year Dental Medicine Students: A Prospective Study with a 5-Year Follow-Up

Abstract:The conventional metal-ceramic is still considered the gold standard in fixed prosthetics especially in terms of longevity. Among alternative materials used, Monolithic Zirconia has shown the capability to reconcile excellent biomechanical properties with acceptable aesthetic performance and to overcome several inconveniences related to veneer restorations. This study aims to clinically evaluate Monolithic Zirconia prosthetic crowns on natural abutments in the posterior sectors, performed by final-year dental medicine students (undoubtedly with less experience in the management of such material) by the standardized California Dental Association score system evaluation, to better understand the viability of Monolithic Zirconia. This prospective study was carried out at the Dental School of the University of Bari "Aldo Moro", Italy. Prosthetic rehabilitation included single crowns or a short pontic prosthesis with maximum one intermediate. Final-year dental students performed tooth reduction under the supervision of three expert tutors. The California Dental Association systematics (based on color, surface, anatomical shape, and marginal integrity) were adopted to evaluate the prosthetic maintenance status over time. Annual follow-up visits were re-evaluated by the same parameters each year. Univariate logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate outcomes and the Kaplan-Meier plot to report survival. The sample consists of 40 crowns performed on 31 patients, 15 males (48.4%) and 16 females (51.6%) with an average age of 59.3 years. The clinical cases subjected to experimental study were found to be "Excellent" (1a/2a/3a/4a) in 34 cases (85%), "Acceptable" in 4 cases (10%), and "To be re-done" in 2 cases (failures) (5%). Our conclusive data support the predictability of Monolithic Zirconia restorations on natural posterior abutments at a long-term follow-up of five years, even when performed by less-experienced clinicians.
