Abstract:The alternating copolymerization of CO2/epoxides to polycarbonates (CO2-PCs) has been an area of research focus because of the growing concern about energy and the environment. Regardless of the enormous progress that has been made, the lack of functionalities and inert chemical structure of CO2-based polycarbonates greatly limit the scope of the application in practice. With an aim to develop smart materials with high added-value, herein, the CO2-based thermoplastic elastomers (CO2-TPEs) were first reported. The CO2-TPEs are efficiently constructed in a tandem catalysis process, which includes epoxide hydrolysis reaction, immortal alternating polymerization of carbon dioxide and epoxides, and the thiol-ene click chemistry. The CO2-TPEs exhibit characteristic properties of thermoplastic elastomers with a Young's modulus up ability could be endowed to the CO2-TPEs via addition of a small amount of boronic to 10.1 MPa. Moreover, robust ester as self-healing dynamic cross-linker. The mechanical properties including the Young's modulus, maximal strength, and extensibility of the CO2-TPE materials can be nearly completely recovered without any extra stimulus at room temperature.
Modification of Poly(ethylene 2,5-Furandicarboxylate) with Aliphatic Polycarbonate Diols: 1. Randomnized Copolymers with Significantly Improved Ductility and High CO2 Barrier Performance

Abstract:Poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF) is a very promising biobased polymer possessing very high mechanical strength, rigidity and gas barrier performance. But its poor ductility and toughness may limit its applications. In this study, PEF-based copolymers with high intrinsic viscosity were successfully synthesized via melt polycondensation of dimethyl 2,5-furandicarboxylate (DMFD) and ethylene glycol in the presence of a copolycarbonate diol (PPeHC diol) as produced from 1,5-pentylene diol (PeDO), 1,6-hexylene diol (HDO) and dimethyl carbonate, and characterized with H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, DSC, TGA, tensile, impact and gas barrier testing. The products were "randomnized" as a result of ester-carbonate exchange reaction occurring along melt polycondensation, and therefore became amorphous copolymers possessing composition-dependent physico-mechanical properties which can be tunable from rigid-to-ductile thermoplastics to thermoplastic elastomers. Particularily, the copolymers with phi(PPeHC) of 25 wt% and 30 wt% are thermoplastics possessing greatly improved ductility (elongation at break up to 194%) and CO2 barrier performance higher than poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET; BIFCO2 3.6-2.8), and retaining high tensile modulus (2.2-1.9 GPa) and yielding strength (69-58 MPa) comparable to the bottle-grade PET. In comparison, the copolymer with phi(PPeHC) of 40 wt% behaves as a high performance thermoplastic elastomer with excellent gas barrier performance as well as high tensile strength (23 MPa).

Abstract:Poly(cyclohexane dimethylene-co-2,2,4,4-tetramethyl cyclobutylene terephthalate) (PCcBT) is a highly transparent, safe, and heat-resistant copolyester and has been commercialized to replace bisphenol A polycarbonate in many kinds of applications. However, there are still some shortcomings in its synthesis and processing such as 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol (CBDO) sublimation, composition deviation, and relatively poor thermal stability. In this study, 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol (MPO) or 3-methyl-1,5-pentanediol (Pe'DO) were used as diol comonomers instead of cyclohexane dimethanol to synthesize poly(3-methyl-1,5-pentylene-co-2,2,4,4-tetramethyl cyclobutylene terephthalate) and poly(2-methyl-1,3-propylene-co-2,2,4,4-tetramethyl cyclobutylene terephthalate) (PMcBT) copolyesters. The effects of comonomers on solubility and sublimation of CBDO and the robustness of polymerization as well as thermal stability during polymerization and processing were examined with emphasis. The presence of Pe'DO and MPO facilitated CBDO dissolution and avoided CBDO sublimation and pipeline blocking, possibly due to a stronger intermolecular interaction between CBDO and Pe'DO or MPO. The deviations of composition and cis-trans ratio between the CBDO monomer and the copolymers were also reduced. The presence of a Pe'T or MT repeat unit endowed the copolymers with improved thermal stability, resulting in much less undesired melt foaming and volume expansion during melt polycondensation and processing. These copolymers are colorless, highly transparent, and heat-resistant materials with T-g up to 145 degrees C. Among them, PMcBT exhibits the best overall performance, displaying more balanced mechanical properties and better optical properties over commercialized PCcBT.

High Molar Mass Polycarbonates as Closed-Loop Recyclable Thermoplastics

Abstract:Using carbon dioxide (CO2) to make recyclable thermoplastics could reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with polymer manufacturing. CO2/cyclic epoxide ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) allows for >30 wt% of the polycarbonate to derive from CO2; so far, the field has largely focused on oligocarbonates. In contrast, efficient catalysts for high molar mass polycarbonates are under-investigated and the resulting thermoplastic structure-property relationships, processing and recycling need to be elucidated. This work describes a new organometallic Mg(II)Co(II) catalyst that combines high productivity, low loading tolerance, the highest polymerization control and yields polycarbonates with Mn values from 4-130 kg mol-1, with narrow, monomodal distributions. It is used in the ROCOP of CO2 with bicyclic epoxides to produce a series of samples, each with Mn>100 kg mol-1, of poly(cyclohexene carbonate) (PCHC), poly(vinyl-cyclohexene carbonate) (PvCHC), poly(ethyl-cyclohexene carbonate) (PeCHC, by hydrogenation of PvCHC) and poly(cyclopentene carbonate) (PCPC). All these materials are amorphous thermoplastics, with high glass transition temperatures (85 < Tg < 126 °C, by DSC) and high thermal stability (Td > 260 °C). The cyclic ring substituents mediate the materials’ chain entanglements, viscosity, and glass transition temperatures. Specifically, PCPC was found to have 10x lower entanglement Mn and 100x lower zero-shear viscosity compared to PCHC, showing potential as a future thermoplastic. All these high molecular weight polymers are fully recyclable, either by re-processing or by using the Mg(II)Co(II) catalyst for highly selective depolymerizations to epoxides and CO2. PCPC shows the fastest depolymerization rates, achieving an activity of 2500 h-1 and >99% selectivity for cyclopentene oxide and CO2.

Abstract:Poly(cyclopentene carbonate) (PCPC) produced by copolymerization of CO2 and cyclopentene oxide (CPO) is a promising but challenging chemical recyclable polymer that has high potential in minimizing plastic pollution and maximizing CO2 utilization. Currently, problems remain to be solved, include low reactivity of toxic metal catalysts, inevitable byproducts, and especially the ambiguous mechanism understanding. Herein, we present the first metal-free access to PCPC by using a series of modular dinuclear organoboron catalysts. PCPC was afforded in an unprecedented catalytic efficiency of 1.0 kg of PCPC/g of catalyst; while the depolymerization of PCPC abides by a combination pathway of random chain scission and chain unzipping, returning CPO in near-quantitative yield (>99 %). The preparation and depolymerization of PCPC along with in depth understanding of related mechanisms would be helpful for further development of advanced catalysts and recyclable plastics.

Abstract:The development of biodegradable and recyclable polymers having the desired material properties required in practical use has provided a partial solution for realizing a sustainable plastics economy. Naturally produced commercial poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB), one of the much studied biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), is a stereoregular thermoplastic material with a high degree of crystallinity, significantly restricting its application due to the stiff and brittle characteristics. Therefore, it is of great significance to overcome the inherent brittleness through decreasing the crystallinity of P3HB. In this contribution, we present a powerful strategy to toughen P3HB via catalytic carbonylative terpolymerization of enantiopure epoxides with different long alkyl side chains and configurations using a binary trimetallic CrIII complex/carbonyl cobalt catalyst system. The structure and stereochemistry of epoxides significantly impact the properties of the resultant PHA copolymers, which spans from viscous oil to tough/ductile and brittle plastics. This study represents a rather rare example of a method to toughen the extensively studied P3HB with epoxide and CO as raw materials.

Preparation of high melt strength polypropylene by the reactive extrusion process and its foaming application

Abstract:The reactive extrusion of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) with ethylenediamine (EDA) as coupling agent was carried out in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder to produce long chain branched polypropylene (LCBPP). Part of PP-g-MAH was replaced by maleic anhydride grafted high-density polyethylene (HDPE-g-MAH) or linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE-g-MAH) to obtain hybrid long chain branched (LCB) polymers. Compared with the linear PP, PE and their blends, the LCB polyolefins exhibit excellent dynamic shear and transient extensional rheological characteristics such as increased dynamic modulus, higher low-frequency complex viscosity, significantly enhanced melt strength and strain-hardening behaviors. LCB polymers also have higher tensile strength, tensile modulus, impact strength and lower elongation at break than linear polymer and their blends. Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) was introduced in the reactive extrusion process. With the presence of scCO 2, the motor current of twin extruder was decreased and LCB polyolefins with lower MFR, higher complex viscosity and increased tensile strength and modulus were obtained. This indicates that the application of scCO2 can reduce the viscosity of melt in extruder, enhance the diffusion of reactive species, facilitate the reaction between functional groups, and increase the LCB density. The foaming behavior of both linear and LCB polyolefins were studied. The results show that cellular materials produced from the LCB polyolefins have higher weight reduction, smaller cell size and better mechanical properties than those produced from the linear polymers.

Abstract:Comprehensive SummaryThe utilization of carbon dioxide (CO2) as a C1 feedstock is consistently attractive, especially in the preparation of sustainable polymeric materials. In this contribution, a terpolymer of CO2, 1,3‐butadiene (BD) and epoxide is synthesized by scandium triflate catalyzed cationic ring‐opening copolymerization of α‐ethylidene‐δ‐vinyl‐δ‐valerolactone (EVL), an intermediate derived from CO2 and BD, with epoxides. The obtained terpolymer with a CO2 content of 22 mol% has a number‐average molecular weight (Mn) up to 7.8 kg/mol and a dispersity (Đ) of 2.4. The reactivity ratios of EVL and cyclohexene oxide (CHO) are determined as 0.01 and 1.07, respectively, suggesting random characteristic of the terpolymer. The preserved C=C double bonds from BD allow for the further modification of the terpolymer by photoinitiated crosslinking. The yielded networks are fluorescent and degradable. This method offers enhanced versatility to the synthesis and additional functionalization of CO2‐based polymers.

Abstract:Aliphatic polycarbonates derived from carbon dioxide and epoxides are drawing increasing attention from both academic and industrial researchers due to their biodegradability and partially renewable raw material resource. Of all the aliphatic polycarbonates investigated, poly(cyclohexene carbonate) (PCHC) is recognized as highly potential candidates thanks to its high glass transition temperature (Tg) which can bridge the shortcomings of commercialized biodegradable materials. Meanwhile, polymers with high Tg require higher processing temperature during compounding and subsequent casting in mold. It is therefore necessary to investigate the property changes of PCHC during its multiple thermal processing. In this work, the effect of several thermal stabilizers on the thermal stability and mechanical properties of PCHC was studied. The results showed that end-capping by maleic anhydride is the best approach to improve the thermal stability and to maintain the mechanical properties of PCHC. The possible mechanism for improving the thermal stability of PCHC was further analyzed by Py-GC/MS and 1H NMR. Partial in situ end-capping of PCHC could mitigate the back-biting reaction at elevated temperature and consequently improved the thermal stability.

Abstract:The development of sustainable packaging materials can mitigate the carbon emissions caused by petroleum-based feedstocks, but economically viable polymers that combine stable mechanical properties with transparency remain an issue. This study reports a facile, sustainable one-pot synthesis of polyester-polycarbonates (PCCTs) through diol end-group shielding by using monomers derived from carbon dioxide (CO2). Copolymerization of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and dimethyl terephthalate with 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM) in varying molar ratios was carried out, and the resulting PCCTs exhibited exceptional optical, thermal, and mechanical properties. The incorporation of DMC and CHDM units was found to significantly impact the thermal and optical characteristics of the PCCTs. The copolyester containing 40 to 90 mol % DMC content demonstrated full amorphousness and high transparency, with a Haze value downgrade to less than 5% and visible light transmittance upgrade to 92%. PCCTs maintained a suitable glass transition temperature range of 42.00–81.21 °C. Notably, the mechanical properties of PCCTs are similar to those of commercial glycol-modified polyethylene terephthalate, with an increase in tensile strength from 41.3 to 52.4 MPa and elongation at break from 8.1 to 244.0%. Given the environmentally friendly synthetic process and exceptional performance of PCCTs, these copolyesters possess significant potential for mainly application in packaging fields.

Chemical Synthesis of CO 2 -Based Polymers with Enhanced Thermal Stability and Unexpected Recyclability from Biosourced Monomers

Abstract:The development of completely recyclable polymers has become an emerging frontier in polymer chemistry; however, the efficient synthesis of monomers or/and polymers with desirable physical properties and mechanical strengths required for practical uses from renewable feedstocks under environmentally friendly conditions still represents a challenge. Herein, we report five types of completely recyclable polycarbonates made from CO2 and biosourced epoxide featuring different substituents on the carbamate group. It is discovered that the judicious installation of various alkyl substituents can drastically enhance the thermal stability and crystalline capacity of the resultant polymers, while the stable five-membered pyrrolidine ring can execute the complete chemical recyclability. For example, CO2-based polycarbonates with a tBu substituent feature with a Tg value of up to 152 °C, close to those of the BPA-based polycarbonates and iBu-substituted CO2 polycarbonates are thermally stable up to ∼300 °C, while Me- and Bn-substituted copolymers become crystalline. Remarkably, all of the reported CO2-based polycarbonates can be recycled back into the epoxide monomers in quantitative yields under mild conditions. Abstract:CO2‐based polycarbonate diols (PPCDLs) are important raw materials. PPCDLs with high carbonate linkage (up to 99%) were controllably synthesized in high efficiency from CO2 and propylene oxide (PO) by synchronously using tetrabutyl ammonium salt of succinic (ASA) as a difunctional initiator and 1,4‐butanediol (BDO) as a difunctional proton exchange agent (PEA) in the presence of triethyl borane (TEB). In this system, the difunctional initiator (ASA) with two carboxylic anions accelerates the polymer chain propagation process, and the difunctional PEA with two active protons facilitates the proton exchange process. The molecular weight and production efficiency of PPCDL can be finely tailored by varying the feed molar ratios of PO to ASA, TEB, and BDO. Upon optimizing this scalable process, the PPCDLs with molecular weights between 1000 and 3000 Da are produced in high yields with a reaction time of 8–12 h, which is much faster than the monofunctional initiator in the presence of BDO (typically 20–36 h) or consumes much less amount of TEB and initiator in the absence of BDO. The synthesized PPCDLs possess a high 1oOH content of the terminal hydroxyl groups and a high carbonate content. Thermoplastic poly(carbonate urethane)s (PCUs) are synthesized by copolymerization of the title PPCDLs, 4,4′‐dicyclichexylmethane diisocyanate (HMDI) and BDO. Due to their high transparency and excellent mechanical properties, PCUs have great potential in the polyurethane industry, such as coatings, adhesives, leather, and thermoplastics.

Abstract:The wide use of poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC), a biodegradable polymer made from carbon dioxide, will contribute greatly to alleviating environmental issues such as white pollution and greenhouse effect. However, the poor mechanical properties and low glass transition temperature (Tg) seriously limit the practical application of PPC. Traditional reinforcement methods for PPC will reduce the toughness sharply. Herein, we propose a new strategy for preparing strong and tough PPC through in situ generated high‐performance PPC‐based cross‐linked microdomains (PPC‐MD). Specifically, based on the aminolysis reaction between carbonate groups in PPC and multiple amine groups in polyethylenimine, PPC‐MD and hydroxy‐terminated PPC with low molecular weight (l‐PPC‐OH) are generated during melt blending. Then, hexamethylene diisocyanate is added to link l‐PPC‐OH for the purpose of eliminating the plasticization of l‐PPC‐OH and the degradation effect of terminal hydroxyl group. The PPC‐MD with high Tg can effectively reinforce PPC and improve its toughness. The PPC/PEI/HDI‐0.02/0.04 shows a high tensile strength of 29.4 ± 2.5 MPa and a toughness of 86.8 ± 5.2 MJ/m3, which is 2.58‐ and 1.38‐folds of PPC, respectively. Besides, the PPC‐MD can greatly improve the Tg of PPC as well. It is worth highlighting that this method can be accomplished by melt blending, which is facile and can be scaled up. We envision that this work will enrich the modification method of PPC and promote the practical application of PPC as the as‐fabricated PPC shows integrated high strength, high toughness, and high Tg.

Abstract:A CO2‐based thermoplastic elastomer, poly(propylene carbonate)‐multiblock‐polyamide6 (PPC‐mb‐PA6) copolymer, was constructed through coupling soft/amorphousPPC blocks and hard/crystalline PA6 blocks. This multiblock copolymer offers enhanced service temperatures and tensile strength, and also exhibits excellent shape memory effect with thermal stimuli responsiveness derived from the micro phase separation between PPC and PA6 domains. A CO2‐based thermoplastic elastomer, poly(propylene carbonate)‐multiblock‐polyamide6 (PPC‐mb‐PA6) copolymer, was constructed through coupling amorphous/soft PPC blocks with crystalline/hard PA6 blocks. The PPC‐mb‐PA6 copolymers with different block length pairs were designed and synthesized, and then fully characterized by structural, thermal, and mechanical analysis. The proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H‐NMR), diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY), heteronuclear multiple‐bond correlation (HMBC) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) results confirm that the multiblock sequence structure of PPC‐mb‐PA6. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) tests show that all PPC‐mb‐PA6s possess melting points around 179–206°C. The thermal and mechanical analysis indicates improved service temperatures (T5% up to 270°C) and tensile strength ranging from 15.8 to 39.6 MPa with higher PA6 content. The dynamic mechanical analysis demonstrates excellent shape memory effect of PPC‐mb‐PA6 with thermal stimuli responsiveness derived from the micro phase separation between soft PPC and hard PA6 domains. And the characteristic strain fixity parameter (Rf) and deformation recovery rate (Rr) are 98% and 100%, respectively, which are comparable with other excellent shape memory polymers.

Abstract:Poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF) is a promising biobased polymer possessing high strength, rigidity and gas barrier performance, but its poor ductility and toughness may limit its practical applications. In order to obtain PEF materials with improved ductility and impact toughness as well as high strength, modulus and excellent gas barrier performance, PEF with relatively low molecular weight was modified with aliphatic polycarbonate (APC) diols by chain extension/coupling in this study. The resulting products were mixtures composed of randomly segmented copolymers, chain extended APC and chain extended PEF. The APC moiety was proved to be partially miscible with the PEF matrix, and therefore plasticized the matrix and promoted its cold crystallization. In comparison with PEF, the modified PEFs possess significantly enhanced tensile ductility and impact toughness. Particularly, the modified PEF containing 15 wt% poly(hexamethylene carbonate) exhibits balanced mechanical properties and CO2 barrier 5 times to PET.

Abstract:Copolymerization of epoxides and carbon dioxide (CO2) with cyclic anhydrides has been developed to be a facile route to obtain biodegradable poly(ester-co-carbonate)s with diversified structures. Metal-free Lewis acid–base pairs emerging in recent years have offered great opportunities for preparing polymers without metal residuals. Herein, the scope of Lewis bases is extended to the tertiary amines with different pK a values and steric hindrances. Especially, the simplest Lewis pair composed of triethylborane (TEB) and triethylamine (TEA) exhibits high catalytic activity even at very low catalyst loadings in the copolymerization of propylene oxide (PO), CO2, and phthalic anhydride (PA). With a PO/PA/TEB/TEA feeding ratio of 16,000/2000/4/1, a low cyclic carbonate content not exceeding 5.0 wt % and a high productivity up to 1.2 kg polymer/g catalyst have been realized at 65 °C. Moreover, the molecular weight of the resultant copolymer climbs to 131 kg/mol with a relatively narrow polymer dispersity index (PDI = 1.31), which is the highest record among the results catalyzed by the homogenous binary catalyst systems. Furthermore, the TEB/TEA (1/1) pair is applicable to provide random copolymers from CO2 with various epoxides and anhydrides, while quasi-block copolymers are yielded with inferior selectivity by replacing TEA with onium salt. Interestingly, the low activity in cyclohexene oxide (CHO) involving copolymerization with PA and CO2 can be dramatically boosted upon adding a small amount of PO (1 mol % of CHO), which can be attributed to the stronger ring-opening ability of PO during the initiation period. The glass transition temperatures of the resultant polymers are adjustable in the range of 34–131 °C by applying different epoxides and anhydrides.
