Abstract:The vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is an emerging new technology. Developing multi-hop routing protocols for urban VANETs is a challenging task due to many factors such as frequent network disconnections. Many VANET routing protocols use a carry-and-forward mechanism to deal with the challenge. However, this mechanism introduces a large packet delay, which might be unacceptable for some applications. In this paper, we first analyze the unique features of urban VANET that vehicles have different types, and move like clusters due to the influence of traffic lights. So, the concept of using buses as the mobile infrastructure to improve the network connectivity is proposed. We also develop a novel routing protocol named MIBR (Mobile Infrastructure Based VANET Routing Protocol). This protocol makes full use of the buses, making them a key component in route selecting and packet forwarding. Simulation results show significant performance improvement in terms of packet delivery ratio and throughput.

Abstract:Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) face significant challenges in providing high-quality service. These networks enable vehicles to exchange critical information, such as road obstacles and accidents, and support various communication modes known as Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X). This research paper proposes an intelligent method to improve the quality of service by optimizing path selection between vehicles, aiming to minimize network overhead and enhance routing efficiency. The proposed approach integrates Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) into the Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol. The effectiveness of this method is validated through implementation and simulation experiments conducted using the Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) and the network simulator (NS3). Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the traditional OLSR algorithm in terms of throughput, average packet delivery rate (PDR), end-to-end delay (E2ED), and average routing overhead.

Abstract:This work is devoted to solving the problem of multicriteria multihop routing in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), aiming at three goals: 1) increasing the end-to-end delivery ratio; 2) reducing the end-to-end latency; and 3) minimizing the network overhead. To this end and beyond the state of the art, heuristic routing for vehicular networks (HERO), which is a distributed routing protocol for urban environments, encapsulating two main components, is proposed. The first component, road-segment selection, aims to prioritize the road segments based on a heuristic function that contains two probability distributions, namely, shortest distance distribution (SDD) and connectivity distribution (CD). The mass function of SDD is the product of three quantities: 1) the perpendicular distance; 2) the dot-production angle; and 3) the segment length. On the other hand, the mass function of CD considers two quantities: 1) the density of vehicles and 2) the interdistance of vehicles on the road segment. The second component, vehicle selection, aims to prioritize the vehicles on the road segment based on four quantities: 1) the relative speed; 2) the movement direction; 3) the available buffer size; and 4) signal fading. The simulation results showed that HERO achieved a promising performance in terms of delivery success ratio, delivery delay, and communication overhead.

Abstract:An efficient routing protocol is of great significance to improve vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) performance. However, due to complex road conditions, intermittent connectivity among vehicles and rapid changes of network topology, how to design an efficient routing protocol in an urban environment to transmit the data packet to the destination remains a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a multiple intersection selection based on road section connectivity probability routing protocol for vehicle-vehicle (V2V) communication in urban VANETs, which considers the vehicle distribution influenced by traffic lights. First, we present a method to calculate the road section connectivity probability of a two-way lane with traffic lights consideration. Then, we establish an optimization model to select the optimal road path from the source node to the destination node based on the road section connectivity probability. Furthermore, we analyze the relay node selection on the road section after the optimal road path is determined, which discusses the number of neighbor vehicles in the communication range of the vehicle carrying packets and jointly considers the position, speed and direction of vehicles. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed routing protocol increases the packet delivery rate and reduces the end-to-end delay.

Abstract:As the number of vehicles increases significantly, traffic congestion has become a major social problem in recent years. Such a situation can be alleviated effectively with the emerging of vehicular ad hoc network (VANET)-based real-time path planning systems. However, existing systems face the challenges of poor anti-congestion capability and high complexity. To address the related issues, an road side unit (RSU)-based architecture is proposed in this paper, in which a city is divided into different areas, each with an RSU. Based on the architecture, a decentralized and hierarchical real-time path planning algorithm is proposed. The path planning problem is formulated from two layers, i.e., area path selection in upper layer and intra-area routing in bottom layer, both of which target to minimize the average travel time. Numerical results show that, our proposed algorithm inherits the anti-congestion capability and owns the advantage of low complexity, as compared with the shortest path algorithm and centralized algorithm.

Abstract:High topology dynamics and intermittent connectivity in Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET) bring huge challenges to end-to-end communication. Existing routing protocols for MANET such as AODV and OLSR work fine under modest mobility, but have a difficult time to handle frequent topology changes in VANET. This paper proposes Peeking at the Past and Present Routing ((PR)-R-3), a routing protocol that will calculate next-hops when the past forwarding is considered invalid. The nexthop calculation is based on the predicted locations of forwarder's neighbors and the packet's destination node, overcoming the inaccuracy caused by stale location information. Furthermore, we differentiate vehicles on crossroads as they have high connectivity in actual urban streets. In this way, (PR)-R-3 is able to deal with link breakages quickly and exploit new links. Simulation results show that (PR)-R-3 outperforms state-of-the-art alternatives in terms of packet delivery ratio, delay and cost, while maintaining strong scalability and robustness. We also implement (PR)-R-3 in a real vehicular testbed and the results reveal it has high connectivity on real streets.

Abstract:Vehicle ad-hoc networks (VANETs) are a subclass of mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). The VANETs communication framework is used to provide communication between moving vehicles in highway and urban road scenarios. Dynamic properties of VANETs, such as high dynamic topology, frequent route failure, high mobility of nodes, and bandwidth constraints, reduce the efficiency of routing. The long length route between source and destination affects the efficiency of the protocol in the form of high overhead, frequent disconnections, high packet loss rate, low packet delivery rate, and low throughput. In this paper, we propose an Enhanced Hybrid Ant Colony Optimization Routing Protocol (EHACORP) to improve the efficiency of the routing process using the shortest path. The shortest path in the proposed protocol has low communication costs and the least number of hops between source and destination vehicles. The EHACORP has two phases. In phase 1, the EHACORP relies on a distance calculation method to compute the distance between vehicles. In phase 2, the source-based ant colony optimization is used to guide the ants to build a shorter path with the least number of hops to transmit data. The shortest path improves the efficiency of protocol in all aspects. The simulation results show that the EHACORP has improved packet delivery rate, throughput, end-to-end delay, routing overhead, and packet loss rate compared to Fuzzy based ant colony optimization (F-ANT), Ad hoc on-demand distance vector (AODV), ant colony optimization routing algorithm (ARA), and AntNet routing protocols.

Abstract:Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) that are considered as a subset of Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) can be applied in the field of transportation especially in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The routing process in these networks is a challenging task due to rapid topology changes, high vehicle mobility and frequent disconnection of links. Therefore, developing an efficient routing protocol that satisfies restriction of delay and minimum overhead is faced with many difficulties and limitations. Also, the detection of malicious vehicles is a significant task in VANETs. To address these issues, using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can be helpful to cope with these limitations. In this paper, operation of UAVs in ad hoc mode and their cooperation with vehicles in VANETs are studied to help in the process of routing and detection of malicious vehicles. A routing protocol named VRU is proposed that includes two distinct ways of routing of data: (1) delivering packets of data between vehicles with the help of UAVs using a protocol named VRU_vu, and (2) routing packet of data between UAVs using a protocol named VRU_u. The NS-2.35 simulator under Linux Ubuntu 12.04 is utilized in order to appraise the performance of VRU routing components in an urban scenario. Also, VanetMobiSim generator of mobility and MobiSim are used to produce the motions of vehicles and to produce the motions of UAVs, respectively. The performance analysis displays that VRU protocol can improve the packet delivery ratio by 16% and detection ratio by 7% compared to other reviewed routing protocol. Also, VRU protocol decreases end-to-end delay by an average of 13% and overhead by 40%.

Abstract:During the last decade, the research on Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) has improved exponentially in real-life scenarios to provide optimized transport network performance. It is a matter of importance that alert messages are delivered promptly to prevent vehicular traffic problems. The fact is an ITS system per se could be a part of a vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) which is an extension of a wireless network. In all sorts of wireless ad hoc networks, the network topology is subjected to change due to the mobility of network nodes; therefore, an existing explored route between two nodes could be demolished in a minor fraction of time. When it comes to the VANETs, the topology likely changes due to the high velocity of nodes. On the other hand, time is a crucial factor playing an important role in message handling between the network's nodes. In this paper, we propose Time delay-based Multipath Routing (TMR) protocol that effectively identifies an optimized path for packet delivery to the destination vehicle with a minimal time delay. Our algorithm gives a higher priority to alert messages compared to normal messages. It also selects the routes with the short round-trip time (RTT) within the RTT threshold. As a result, our algorithm would realize two goals. Firstly, it would speed up the data transmission rate and deliver data packets, particularly warning messages, to the destination vehicle promptly and therefore avoid vehicular problems such as car accidents. Secondly, the TMR algorithm reduces the data traffic load, particularly of the normal messages, to alleviate the pressure on the network and therefore avoids network congestion and data collisions. This, in turn, lessens the packets' retransmissions. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed protocol, the TMR has been compared with the other protocols such as AOMDV, FF-AOMDV, EGSR, QMR, and ISR. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed protocol proves its excellent performance compared to other protocols.

Abstract:The Junction-based routing (JBR) manages the data packet forwarding between vehicles in urban Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) where radio obstacles force routing decisions on junctions. JBR has been developed through different types such as the dynamic selection of junctions. The latter has been introduced to solve the shortages of static junction selection in transferring data within city scenarios. Meanwhile, the lack of up-to-date traffic density information induces the selection of unstable route segments for data packet relay so that many data packets are dropped. That is due to Time-To-Live (TTL) expiration or local sparse streets maxima. Our study addresses the optimal adapted number of selected junctions on each forwarding junction in order to reduce the data loss rates of the existing dynamic junction selection approaches. For this purpose, a bio-inspired evaluation mechanism of route segments' continuous connectivity using the Firefly Algorithm (FA) is implemented in this paper. FA tracks the routing quality of route segments on the basis of their connectivity history and predefined real-time traffic parameters. This approach provides progressive route connectivity information that allows the application of an adaptive dynamic junction selection. The latter combines the single and multiple junction selection in order to cope with unanticipated traffic density changes of route segments, especially for the remote and unfrequented streets. The comparison of the proposed bio-inspired JBR protocol to a few classic JBR schemes has proven considerable PDR improvement from 6% to 19% in large cities and 6% to 11% in small cities.

Abstract:In Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, reliable information transmission relies on an effective routing strategy. Most existing reinforcement learning-based routing methods are ineffective in dynamic network environments and cannot prevent inefficient network routing. Efficient network routing can be controlled by network traffic management, so this paper proposes an intelligent routing strategy based on Deep Reinforcement Learning to enhance routing performance. By integrating intersection forwarding and traffic awareness capabilities, this paper addresses the problem of local optimality and utilizes the Deep Q Network to make intersection forwarding decisions. The state space of this strategy consists of intersection nodes, road information between intersections, and forwarding packet information. When a vehicle node carrying a packet approaches an intersection based on the state space, the intersection node uses a neural network to select the optimal next-hop relay intersection from past learning experiences. It generates appropriate vehicle routing decisions based on information from the current and candidate relay intersections. Finally, we use the real taxi trajectory data of Beijing City to conduct extensive simulation experiments. Simulation results and analysis demonstrate that the proposed strategy outperforms related research regarding higher average packet delivery ratio, shorter average end-to-end delay, and lower average overhead ratio in dense and sparse traffic periods under real road environments. Consequently, this strategy provides efficient and reliable message transmission services for Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks.

Mi-Vanet: A New Mobile Infrastructure Based Vanet Architecture For Urban Environment

Abstract:The vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) has attracted a lot of interest recently. However, traditional VANET is just an instantiation of MANET in which nodes are treated equally for data delivery. We first analyze the unique features of urban VANET that vehicles have different types, and move as clusters due to the influence of traffic lights. Then a two tier architecture called Mobile Infrastructure Based VANET (MI-VANET) is proposed. In this architecture, the buses constitute a mobile backbone for data delivery while the low tier is composed of ordinary cars and passengers. MI-VANET will not only bring the benefit that ordinary cars do not have to forward packets for other nodes, but also improve the network connectivity. The corresponding Mobile Infrastructure Registering (MIRG) and Mobile Infrastructure Routing (MIRT) algorithms are also presented. The bus line information is made full use in MIRT. Simulation results show that there is a 40-55% improvement in delivery ratio while the throughput is even doubled compared to GPSR in traditional VANET.

Abstract:Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANET) offer several user applications for passengers and drivers, as well as security and internet access applications. To ensure efficient data transmission between vehicles, a reliable routing protocol is considered a significant challenge. This paper suggests a new clustering-based routing protocol combining a modified K-Means algorithm with Continuous Hopfield Network and Maximum Stable Set Problem (KMRP) for VANET. In this way, the basic input parameters of the K-Means algorithm, such as the number of clusters and the initial cluster heads, will not be selected randomly, but using Maximum Stable Set Problem and Continuous Hopfield Network. Then the assignment of vehicles to clusters will be carried out according to Link Reliability Model as a metric that replaces the distance parameter in the K-Means algorithm. Finally, the cluster head is selected by weight function according to the amount of free buffer space, the speed, and the node degree. The simulation results have proved that the designed protocol performs better in a highway vehicular environment, compared to the most recent schemes designed for the same objective. In fact, KMRP reduces traffic congestion, and thus provides a significant increase in Throughput. In addition, KMRP decreases the transmission delay and guarantees the stability of the clusters in high density and mobility, which acts better in terms of the Packet Delivery Ratio.

Abstract:Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), which include vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), are a promising method for intelligent transportation systems. The major challenges of VANET protocols are symmetric links and changing topology of the networks and hence a proper routing method is necessary for VANET. A crucial issue with VANETs is the transmission of data from a starting point to the base station. To discover the least path with the lowest cost and fewest hops between the source and the destination, existing work uses a novel priority-based direction-aware collision avoidance (P-DVCA). To direct the ants to develop a shorter path with fewer hops for data transmission, the suggested method uses the prioritising and scheduling enhanced congestion control-based source ant colony optimization (ECC-ACO) for VANETs. Based on the message type and network situation, this technique provides precedence for privacy messages communications. Privacy messages can also be divided into beacon messages and occurrence messages. At that point, each message is routed into the appropriate queue predicated on its primary consideration, and each message in each queue is planned. When compared to renowned VANET communication architecture, simulation and analytical findings show that proposed ECC-ACO offers a respectable reduction in collisions.

Abstract:Traffic systems have been built as a result of recent technological advancements. In application, dependable communication technology is essential to link any system needs. VANET technology is used to communicate data about intelligent traffic lights, which are focused on infrastructure during traffic accidents and mechanisms to reduce traffic congestion. To ensure reliable data transfer in VANET, appropriate routing protocols must be used. This research aims to improve data transmission in VANETs implemented in intelligent traffic lights. This study investigates the capability of combining the DSDV routing protocol with the routing protocol AODV to boost AODV on an OMNET++ simulator utilizing the 802.11p wireless standard. According to the simulation results obtained by analyzing the delay parameters, network QoS, and throughput on each protocol, the DSDV-AODV routing protocol performs better in three scenarios compared to QoS, delay, and throughput parameters in every scenario that uses network topology adapted to the conditions on the road intersections. The topology with 50 fixed + 50 mobile nodes yields the best results, with 0.00062 s delay parameters, a network QoS of 640 bits/s, and a throughput of 629.437 bits/s. Aside from the poor results on the network QoS parameters, the addition of mobile nodes to the topology influences both the results of delay and throughput metrics.

Abstract:The research addresses ITS challenges in accurate info transmission in V2V and V2R communication within VANETs, focusing on urban areas with high traffic. A self‐adaptive search optimization technique is proposed for VANET clustering, prioritizing vehicles based on energy, acceleration, jitter, priority, velocity, and trust. The technique's evaluation values are 0.53 s throughput, 36.07 km/h velocity, 3.472 s jitter, and 43.572% SDTT with 50 vehicles in a 50 s test that highlights its potential for improved VANET communication and traffic management. Summary In recent days, VANET is considered as the main hopeful equipment in the system of transportation since traffic congestion arises regularly and thus occurred road accidents very easily. Besides, the network traffic is increasing due to the huge quantity of information generated in region of urban. Therefore, one of the primary challenges faced by Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is ensuring the accurate transmission of information in both vehicle‐to‐vehicle (V2V) and vehicle‐to‐road (V2R) sensing unit communications. So, here, an adaptive routing controller (ARC) is utilized to improve the data transmission between vehicle and road sensing unit (RSU) and to minimize the traffic density in VANET, and the self‐adaptive search optimization is developed in VANET clustering to prioritize vehicles in the lane, in which the multi‐objective function is intended depending on the energy of the node, acceleration, jitter, priority, velocity, and trust factors. The traffic light control is done to facilitate the effective communication in the network. Thus, the proposed technique is calculated in terms of throughput, jitter, quadratic mean of acceleration (QMA), and spatially distributed travel time (SDTT), which acquired the values of 0.53 s, 36.07 kmph, 3.472 s, and 43.572%, respectively, while using 50 vehicles at 50 s.

Abstract:In urban Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs), high mobility of vehicular environment and frequently changed network topology call for a low delay end-to-end routing algorithm. In this paper, we propose a Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) based decentralized routing scheme, where the inherent similarity between the routing problem in VANET and the MARL problem is exploited. The proposed routing scheme models the interaction between vehicles and the environment as a multi-agent problem in which each vehicle autonomously establishes the communication channel with a neighbor device regardless of the global information. Simulation performed in the 3GPP Manhattan mobility model demonstrates that our proposed decentralized routing algorithm achieves less than 45.8 ms average latency and high stability of 0.05 % averaging failure rate with varying vehicle capacities.
Detecting Urban Road Condition and Disseminating Traffic Information by VANETs.

Abstract:In urban areas, traffic congestion has become a serious phenomenon resulting in a great waste of time and fuel. How to detect road condition and disseminate traffic information effectively has become a significant challenge. Recently, the technology of vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) has been utilized to deal with this problem, and become an important component of the intelligent transportation system (ITS). As two basic paradigms, both vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-RSU (V2R) communications have their own advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, we propose two novel approaches based on V2V and V2R communications respectively to explore a more suitable candidate for the traffic management. The travel time of vehicles is selected as the common indicator to evaluate the traffic state of route. On the basis of it, a routing algorithm is designed to provide a reasonable route for drivers. Finally, our two approaches are validated in a realistic scenario by Veins. The simulation results show that the performance of V2R scheme is restricted by the limited transmission range of RSU, while the V2V scheme is more appropriate for traffic information dissemination if the broadcast storm is well solved.
