Abstract:In Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, reliable information transmission relies on an effective routing strategy. Most existing reinforcement learning-based routing methods are ineffective in dynamic network environments and cannot prevent inefficient network routing. Efficient network routing can be controlled by network traffic management, so this paper proposes an intelligent routing strategy based on Deep Reinforcement Learning to enhance routing performance. By integrating intersection forwarding and traffic awareness capabilities, this paper addresses the problem of local optimality and utilizes the Deep Q Network to make intersection forwarding decisions. The state space of this strategy consists of intersection nodes, road information between intersections, and forwarding packet information. When a vehicle node carrying a packet approaches an intersection based on the state space, the intersection node uses a neural network to select the optimal next-hop relay intersection from past learning experiences. It generates appropriate vehicle routing decisions based on information from the current and candidate relay intersections. Finally, we use the real taxi trajectory data of Beijing City to conduct extensive simulation experiments. Simulation results and analysis demonstrate that the proposed strategy outperforms related research regarding higher average packet delivery ratio, shorter average end-to-end delay, and lower average overhead ratio in dense and sparse traffic periods under real road environments. Consequently, this strategy provides efficient and reliable message transmission services for Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks.

Research and Development of Routing Metrics for VANET

Abstract:The advangages and disadvangages of position-based metrics,vehicular-motion-based metrics and link-quality-based metrics for VANET(vehicular Ad-hoc NETwork) are analyzed.Two routing metrics are proposed,which are the metric combining hop counts and vehicle speed,and the metric combining hop counts and retransmission counts.The two new metrics can limit routing length.In addition,the multipath routing idea is used to decrease route discovery frequency.Furthermore,a method of vehicular information col-lection using OBD(on-board diagnostic) technology is proposed to solve the problems of compatibility and modification of vehicles.Simulation results show that the two routing protocols based on the above two improved metrics,termed as S-AOMDV and R-AOMDV,achieve better performance than AOMDV(Ad hoc on-demand multipath distance vector) with minimum hop-count metric.Especially with high load,the performance metrics of PDF(packet delivery fraction) of S-AOMDV and R-AOMDV are improved by 3.54% and 5.53%,respectively,while the performance metrics of Average End-to-End Delay are reduced by 11.92% and 53.95%,respectively.

Abstract:High topology dynamics and intermittent connectivity in Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET) bring huge challenges to end-to-end communication. Existing routing protocols for MANET such as AODV and OLSR work fine under modest mobility, but have a difficult time to handle frequent topology changes in VANET. This paper proposes Peeking at the Past and Present Routing ((PR)-R-3), a routing protocol that will calculate next-hops when the past forwarding is considered invalid. The nexthop calculation is based on the predicted locations of forwarder's neighbors and the packet's destination node, overcoming the inaccuracy caused by stale location information. Furthermore, we differentiate vehicles on crossroads as they have high connectivity in actual urban streets. In this way, (PR)-R-3 is able to deal with link breakages quickly and exploit new links. Simulation results show that (PR)-R-3 outperforms state-of-the-art alternatives in terms of packet delivery ratio, delay and cost, while maintaining strong scalability and robustness. We also implement (PR)-R-3 in a real vehicular testbed and the results reveal it has high connectivity on real streets.

Abstract:Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) have the characteristics of high mobility, frequently changing topology and uneven distribution, which made it a challenge to design an efficient and robust routing protocol with low latency and high packet delivery rate. Currently, intersection-based routing method and full-path based routing method are two popular solutions for the packet routing in VANETs. Although the intersection-based routing method has better real-time performance, it has the problem of local optimization, making the routing results not global optimal. Although the full-path based method can obtain the global optimal solution, it is weak in dealing with the dynamically changing topological network. Aiming at solving the above problems, this paper designs an intersection-based QoS routing (IQRRL) algorithm, which mainly includes two crutial steps: the next intersection selection and the next hop vehicle selection. In the selection of the next intersection, this paper uses an improved intersection-based routing protocol. In addition to considering connectivity and delay, IQRRL also considers the communication quality from the neighbor’s road to the destination node while evaluating the quality of the neighbor’s road, which minimizes the problem of local optimization. When the next intersection is determined, a road is then determined, and then the next hop vehicle within the road should be chosen to relay the packet forward. In the next-hop vehicle selection step, this paper adopts multi-hop evaluation technology based on reinforcement learning. In addition to using “greedy decision-making” to select the next-hop vehicle, it also comprehensively evaluates whether the next-hop vehicle is still optimal in the future, so that the stability and reliability of data forwarding are improved and local optimal problems are avoided. Besides, this article uses a simulation system to compare IQRRL with other routing algorithms. The result reveals that IQRRL outperforms in terms of packet delivery ratio and transmission delay.

Keep Forwarding Path Freshest in VANET Via Applying Reinforcement Learning

Abstract:In Vehicular Ad Hoc NETworks (VANET), dynamic topology changes of network and inconstant bandwidth make it hard to maintain an end-to-end path to complete long-time stable data transmission. Facing this challenge, researchers have proposed the hybrid routing approach, which tries to combine both the advantages of recalculating route when topology changes and looking up routing table as long as the network topology is relatively stable. However, the existing hybrid routing algorithms can easily cause the blind path problem, meaning a route entry is kept in the routing table without expiration according to the timeout mechanism but it is actually invalid, because the next hop is already unavailable. To address this issue, we propose a Reinforcement learning based Hybrid Routing algorithm (RHR) that can online track the available paths with their status and use packet-carry-on information as real-time feedback to guide routing. RHR keeps the forwarding path always the freshest and thus improves the system performance. Simulation results show that RHR achieves better performance in packet delivery ratio (PDR), roundtrip time (RTT) and overhead than other peers under different scenarios of network scale, request frequency and vehicle velocity.

Abstract:The vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) constitutes a key technology for realizing intelligent transportation services. However, VANET is characterized by diverse message types, complex security attributes of communication nodes, and rapid network topology changes. In this case, how to ensure safe, efficient, convenient, and comfortable message services for users has become a challenge that should not be ignored. To improve the flexibility of routing matching multiple message types in VANET, this paper proposes a secure intelligent message forwarding strategy based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL). The key supporting elements of the model in the strategy are reasonably designed in combination with the scenario, and sufficient training of the model is carried out by deep Q networks (DQN). In the strategy, the state space is composed of the distance between candidate and destination nodes, the security attribute of candidate nodes and the type of message to be sent. The node can adaptively select the routing scheme according to the complex state space. Simulation and analysis show that the proposed strategy has the advantages of fast convergence, well generalization ability, high transmission security, and low network delay. The strategy has flexible and rich service patterns and provides flexible security for VANET message services.

Abstract:The rapid growth of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) has generated significant interest in routing techniques for vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) in both academic and industrial communities. To address the complexity of urban environments and dynamic vehicle mobility, we propose a hierarchical Q-learning-based routing algorithm with grouped roadside unit (RSU) for VANETs. RSUs are grouped, and a Q-vector containing group information is exchanged through vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications. Q-vector-based road-segment (QVRS) control messages are periodically broadcasted to refresh the V2X evaluation metric, which considers vehicle positions, velocities, directions, and communication conditions. To adapt to the nonstationary vehicular environment, a multi-agent reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm is performed on RSUs at each intersection to achieve distributed learning and local decisions. The hierarchical Q-learning algorithm trains group Q-table and local Q-table individually for reaching destinations on each RSU. The optimal data routing behavior is conducted with two separate Q-tables by utilizing the integrated V2X metric as the reward function. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed method reduces broadcasting overhead, prolongs path lifetime and maintains a high packet delivery ratio and low average end-to-end delay. The incorporation of group design in our method accelerates the learning process, which facilitates more efficient communication in VANETs.

Abstract:As the number of vehicles increases significantly, traffic congestion has become a major social problem in recent years. Such a situation can be alleviated effectively with the emerging of vehicular ad hoc network (VANET)-based real-time path planning systems. However, existing systems face the challenges of poor anti-congestion capability and high complexity. To address the related issues, an road side unit (RSU)-based architecture is proposed in this paper, in which a city is divided into different areas, each with an RSU. Based on the architecture, a decentralized and hierarchical real-time path planning algorithm is proposed. The path planning problem is formulated from two layers, i.e., area path selection in upper layer and intra-area routing in bottom layer, both of which target to minimize the average travel time. Numerical results show that, our proposed algorithm inherits the anti-congestion capability and owns the advantage of low complexity, as compared with the shortest path algorithm and centralized algorithm.
Routing protocol for VANETs based on mechanisms of reward-punishment of links and optimal selection of nodes

Abstract:A stable routing protocol for vehicle Ad Hoc networks applications was proposed.The communication link between the two nodes was rewarded or punished according to the transmission time of hello packets between two nodes,and a reward-punishment value of each communication link was obtained.An optimal selection factor of nodes was built by considering four factors such as link bandwidth,transmission distance,speed and density of nodes,and the next hop node with large optimal selection factor was optimally selected.Link weight was constructed by combining the reward punishment value of links and optimal selection factor of nodes,and route discovery and route maintenance were executed according to maximum metrics of link weight.Results of experiments show that,the proposed routing protocol has higher packet delivery rate,and lower end-to-end average delay and network load,compared with the common routing protocols such as MAODV,GPSR and GPSR-R.

Abstract:Most of routing protocols in VANETs are position-based due to their well scalability. The forwarding decisions of such protocols are simply based on the location information of forwarders' neighborhood and the destination node. Due to high mobility of vehicles, location-service protocols are required to provide the destination location. Location services protocols can be categorized as flooding-based and quorum-based. They are unrealistic for VANETs. In the former approaches, global network flooding require extreme high cost, while in the latter approaches, quorums' hand-off is impossible because of high volume of exchange data. In this paper, we present a routing by utilizing locality of vehicles' traces (i.e., left location information). Besides, by the aid of high mobility of vehicles and news exchange (new information about vehicles' location), vehicles' location information can be spread to improve the possibility of meeting a vehicle which has the location information of the destination. Our protocol is realistic and practical because neither global network flooding nor quorums are required. The simulation results show that our protocol works efficiently for VANETs in city environments and has higher successful query rate and lower cost.

Abstract:An efficient routing protocol is of great significance to improve vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) performance. However, due to complex road conditions, intermittent connectivity among vehicles and rapid changes of network topology, how to design an efficient routing protocol in an urban environment to transmit the data packet to the destination remains a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a multiple intersection selection based on road section connectivity probability routing protocol for vehicle-vehicle (V2V) communication in urban VANETs, which considers the vehicle distribution influenced by traffic lights. First, we present a method to calculate the road section connectivity probability of a two-way lane with traffic lights consideration. Then, we establish an optimization model to select the optimal road path from the source node to the destination node based on the road section connectivity probability. Furthermore, we analyze the relay node selection on the road section after the optimal road path is determined, which discusses the number of neighbor vehicles in the communication range of the vehicle carrying packets and jointly considers the position, speed and direction of vehicles. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed routing protocol increases the packet delivery rate and reduces the end-to-end delay.

Abstract:In vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), beacon broadcasting plays a critical role in improving road safety and avoiding hazardous situations. How to ensure reliability and scalability of beacon broadcasting is a difficult and open problem, due to high mobility, dynamic network topology, hidden terminal, and varying density in both the time and location domains. In this paper, wireless resources are divided into basic resource units in the time and frequency domains, and a distributed and adaptive reservation based MAC protocol (DARP) is proposed to solve the above problem. For decentralized control in VANETs, each vehicle's channel access is coordinated with its neighbors to solve the hidden terminal problem. To ensure the reliability of beacon broadcasting, different kinds of preambles are applied in DARP to support distributed reservation, detect beacon collisions, and resolve collisions. Once a vehicle reserves a resource unit successfully, it will not release it until collision occurs due to topology change. The protocol performance in terms of access collision probability and access delay are analyzed. Based on the analysis, protocol parameters, including transmission power and time slots duration, can be adjusted to reduce collision probability and enhance reliability and scalability. Using NS-3 with vehicle traces generated by simulation of urban mobility (SUMO), simulation results show that the proposed DARP protocol can achieve the design goals of reliability and scalability, and it substantially outperforms the existing standard solutions.

Abstract:Today, the use of safety solutions in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is a serious challenge because of novel progress in wireless technologies and the high number of road accidents. Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is a momentous element in this system because they can improve safety and efficiency in ITS. In this network, vehicles act as moving nodes and work with other nodes within their communication range. Due to high-dynamic vehicles and their different speeds in this network, links between vehicles are valid for a short time interval. Therefore, routing is a challenging work in these networks. Recently, reinforcement learning (RL) plays a significant role in developing routing algorithms for VANET. In this paper, we review reinforcement learning and its characteristics and study how to use this technique for creating routing protocols in VANETs. We propose a categorization of RL-based routing schemes in these networks. This paper helps researchers to understand how to design RL-based routing algorithms in VANET and improve the existing methods by understanding the challenges and opportunities in this area.

Abstract:This work is devoted to solving the problem of multicriteria multihop routing in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), aiming at three goals: 1) increasing the end-to-end delivery ratio; 2) reducing the end-to-end latency; and 3) minimizing the network overhead. To this end and beyond the state of the art, heuristic routing for vehicular networks (HERO), which is a distributed routing protocol for urban environments, encapsulating two main components, is proposed. The first component, road-segment selection, aims to prioritize the road segments based on a heuristic function that contains two probability distributions, namely, shortest distance distribution (SDD) and connectivity distribution (CD). The mass function of SDD is the product of three quantities: 1) the perpendicular distance; 2) the dot-production angle; and 3) the segment length. On the other hand, the mass function of CD considers two quantities: 1) the density of vehicles and 2) the interdistance of vehicles on the road segment. The second component, vehicle selection, aims to prioritize the vehicles on the road segment based on four quantities: 1) the relative speed; 2) the movement direction; 3) the available buffer size; and 4) signal fading. The simulation results showed that HERO achieved a promising performance in terms of delivery success ratio, delivery delay, and communication overhead.

A Mobile Infrastructure Based VANET Routing Protocol in the Urban Environment

Abstract:The vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is an emerging new technology. Developing multi-hop routing protocols for urban VANETs is a challenging task due to many factors such as frequent network disconnections. Many VANET routing protocols use a carry-and-forward mechanism to deal with the challenge. However, this mechanism introduces a large packet delay, which might be unacceptable for some applications. In this paper, we first analyze the unique features of urban VANET that vehicles have different types, and move like clusters due to the influence of traffic lights. So, the concept of using buses as the mobile infrastructure to improve the network connectivity is proposed. We also develop a novel routing protocol named MIBR (Mobile Infrastructure Based VANET Routing Protocol). This protocol makes full use of the buses, making them a key component in route selecting and packet forwarding. Simulation results show significant performance improvement in terms of packet delivery ratio and throughput.

Abstract:Vehicle ad-hoc networks (VANETs) are a subclass of mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). The VANETs communication framework is used to provide communication between moving vehicles in highway and urban road scenarios. Dynamic properties of VANETs, such as high dynamic topology, frequent route failure, high mobility of nodes, and bandwidth constraints, reduce the efficiency of routing. The long length route between source and destination affects the efficiency of the protocol in the form of high overhead, frequent disconnections, high packet loss rate, low packet delivery rate, and low throughput. In this paper, we propose an Enhanced Hybrid Ant Colony Optimization Routing Protocol (EHACORP) to improve the efficiency of the routing process using the shortest path. The shortest path in the proposed protocol has low communication costs and the least number of hops between source and destination vehicles. The EHACORP has two phases. In phase 1, the EHACORP relies on a distance calculation method to compute the distance between vehicles. In phase 2, the source-based ant colony optimization is used to guide the ants to build a shorter path with the least number of hops to transmit data. The shortest path improves the efficiency of protocol in all aspects. The simulation results show that the EHACORP has improved packet delivery rate, throughput, end-to-end delay, routing overhead, and packet loss rate compared to Fuzzy based ant colony optimization (F-ANT), Ad hoc on-demand distance vector (AODV), ant colony optimization routing algorithm (ARA), and AntNet routing protocols.

An Integrated DQN and RF Packet Routing Framework for the V2X Network

Abstract:With the development of artificial intelligence technology, deep reinforcement learning (DRL) has become a major approach to the design of intelligent vehicle-to-everything (V2X) routing protocols for vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). However, if the V2X routing protocol does not consider both real-time traffic conditions and historical vehicle trajectory information, the source vehicle may not transfer its packet to the correct relay vehicles and, finally, to the destination. Thus, this kind of routing protocol fails to guarantee successful packet delivery. Using the greater network flexibility and scalability of the software-defined network (SDN) architecture, this study designs a two-phase integrated DQN and RF Packet Routing Framework (IDRF) that combines the deep Q-learning network (DQN) and random forest (RF) approaches. First, the IDRF offline phase corrects the vehicle's historical trajectory information using the vehicle trajectory continuity algorithm and trains the DQN model. Then, the IDRF real-time phase judges whether vehicles can meet each other and makes a real-time routing decision to select the most appropriate relay vehicle after adding real-time vehicles to the VANET. In this way, the IDRF can obtain the packet transfer path with the shortest end-to-end delay. Compared to two DQN-based approaches, i.e., TDRL-RP and VRDRT, and traditional VANET routing algorithms, the IDRF exhibits significant performance improvements for both sparse and congested periods during intensive simulations of the historical GPS trajectories of 10,357 taxis within Beijing city. Performance improvements in the average packet delivery ratio, end-to-end delay, and overhead ratio of the IDRF over TDRL-RP and VRDRT under different numbers of pairs and transmission ranges are at least 3.56%, 12.73%, and 5.14% and 6.06%, 11.84%, and 7.08%, respectively.

Abstract:Recently, the research on the vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) has been paid more attention by researchers with the quick development of the autonomous driving technology. In the VANET, vehicles can communicate with everything through the route established by routing algorithms. However, the topology of the VANET changes fast because the vehicles move fast. Also, as the number of vehicles increases, the probability of data collision and the transmission latency will also increase when communicating. Therefore, the VANET needs a stable, low-latency, and efficient route for vehicles to communicate with each other. However, the existing routing algorithms are either unable to aggregate data or are not suitable for the large-size VANET. In this paper, we consider the vehicle attribute information comprehensively and cluster the vehicles on the road by using the cluster algorithm we propose. We dynamically select the cluster heads at each moment according to their attribute information. We consider all kinds of nodes in the network and the vehicle nodes will communicate with each other through the cluster heads under the two-level communicating algorithm we propose. Compared with the existing cluster routing algorithm, the algorithm we propose is much more suitable for the large-size VANET because the cluster heads do not need a gateway to help them communicate. In the simulation part, we set some real street scenes in Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) and the vehicles can move by the traffic rules like in the real world, which is more suitable for the VANET. After analysing the communication performance in Network Simulator version 2 (NS2), we can get a conclusion that the algorithm proposed is superior to the traditional routing algorithm. The route established by the algorithm we propose is much more stable and efficient. And the latency is also lower than the former.

Abstract:The reliability of the communication link is quite common and challenging to handle as the topology changes frequently in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). Another problem with VANETs is that the vehicles are from different manufacturers. Hence, the heterogeneity of hardware is obvious. These heterogeneity and reliability problems affect the message dissemination in VANETs. This paper aims to address these challenges by proposing a robust routing protocol capable of ensuring reliable, scalable, and heterogeneity-tolerant message dissemination in VANETs. We first introduced a hybrid hierarchical architecture based on software-defined networking (SDN) principles for VANETs, leveraging SDN's inherent scalability and adaptability to heterogeneity. Further, a road-side unit (RSU)-assisted cloud-based location-aware hybrid routing for software-defined VANETs (SD-VANETs) that we call RC-LAHR was proposed. RC-LAHR was rigorously tested and analyzed for its performance in terms of packet delivery ratio (PDR) and end-to-end delay (EED), along with a comprehensive assessment of network traffic and load impacts on cloud infrastructure and RSUs. The routing protocol is compared with state-of-the-art protocols, Greedy Perimeter Stateless Routing (GPSR) and Opportunistic and Position-Based Routing (OPBR). The proposed routing protocol performs well as compared to GPSR and OPBR. The result shows that the EED is reduced to 20% and the PDR is increased to 30%. The network reliability is also increased up to 5% as compared to the OPBR and GPSR.
