Abstract:The vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) constitutes a key technology for realizing intelligent transportation services. However, VANET is characterized by diverse message types, complex security attributes of communication nodes, and rapid network topology changes. In this case, how to ensure safe, efficient, convenient, and comfortable message services for users has become a challenge that should not be ignored. To improve the flexibility of routing matching multiple message types in VANET, this paper proposes a secure intelligent message forwarding strategy based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL). The key supporting elements of the model in the strategy are reasonably designed in combination with the scenario, and sufficient training of the model is carried out by deep Q networks (DQN). In the strategy, the state space is composed of the distance between candidate and destination nodes, the security attribute of candidate nodes and the type of message to be sent. The node can adaptively select the routing scheme according to the complex state space. Simulation and analysis show that the proposed strategy has the advantages of fast convergence, well generalization ability, high transmission security, and low network delay. The strategy has flexible and rich service patterns and provides flexible security for VANET message services.

Abstract:In Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, reliable information transmission relies on an effective routing strategy. Most existing reinforcement learning-based routing methods are ineffective in dynamic network environments and cannot prevent inefficient network routing. Efficient network routing can be controlled by network traffic management, so this paper proposes an intelligent routing strategy based on Deep Reinforcement Learning to enhance routing performance. By integrating intersection forwarding and traffic awareness capabilities, this paper addresses the problem of local optimality and utilizes the Deep Q Network to make intersection forwarding decisions. The state space of this strategy consists of intersection nodes, road information between intersections, and forwarding packet information. When a vehicle node carrying a packet approaches an intersection based on the state space, the intersection node uses a neural network to select the optimal next-hop relay intersection from past learning experiences. It generates appropriate vehicle routing decisions based on information from the current and candidate relay intersections. Finally, we use the real taxi trajectory data of Beijing City to conduct extensive simulation experiments. Simulation results and analysis demonstrate that the proposed strategy outperforms related research regarding higher average packet delivery ratio, shorter average end-to-end delay, and lower average overhead ratio in dense and sparse traffic periods under real road environments. Consequently, this strategy provides efficient and reliable message transmission services for Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks.

Abstract:Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANETs) need methods to control traffic caused by a high volume of traffic during day and night, the interaction of vehicles, and pedestrians, vehicle collisions, increasing travel delays, and energy issues. Routing is one of the most critical problems in VANET. One of the machine learning categories is reinforcement learning (RL), which uses RL algorithms to find a more optimal path. According to the feedback they get from the environment, these methods can affect the system through learning from previous actions and reactions. This paper provides a comprehensive review of various methods such as reinforcement learning, deep reinforcement learning, and fuzzy learning in the traffic network, to obtain the best method for finding optimal routing in the VANET network. In fact, this paper deals with the advantages, disadvantages and performance of the methods introduced. Finally, we categorize the investigated methods and suggest the proper performance of each of them.

Abstract:Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) have the characteristics of high mobility, frequently changing topology and uneven distribution, which made it a challenge to design an efficient and robust routing protocol with low latency and high packet delivery rate. Currently, intersection-based routing method and full-path based routing method are two popular solutions for the packet routing in VANETs. Although the intersection-based routing method has better real-time performance, it has the problem of local optimization, making the routing results not global optimal. Although the full-path based method can obtain the global optimal solution, it is weak in dealing with the dynamically changing topological network. Aiming at solving the above problems, this paper designs an intersection-based QoS routing (IQRRL) algorithm, which mainly includes two crutial steps: the next intersection selection and the next hop vehicle selection. In the selection of the next intersection, this paper uses an improved intersection-based routing protocol. In addition to considering connectivity and delay, IQRRL also considers the communication quality from the neighbor’s road to the destination node while evaluating the quality of the neighbor’s road, which minimizes the problem of local optimization. When the next intersection is determined, a road is then determined, and then the next hop vehicle within the road should be chosen to relay the packet forward. In the next-hop vehicle selection step, this paper adopts multi-hop evaluation technology based on reinforcement learning. In addition to using “greedy decision-making” to select the next-hop vehicle, it also comprehensively evaluates whether the next-hop vehicle is still optimal in the future, so that the stability and reliability of data forwarding are improved and local optimal problems are avoided. Besides, this article uses a simulation system to compare IQRRL with other routing algorithms. The result reveals that IQRRL outperforms in terms of packet delivery ratio and transmission delay.

Abstract:The vehicular ad hoc network, VANET, is one of the most popular and promising technologies in intelligent transportation today. However, VANET is susceptible to several vulnerabilities that result in an intrusion. This intrusion must be solved before VANET technology can be adopted. In this study, we suggest a unique machine learning technique to improve VANET's effectiveness. The proposed method incorporates two phases. Phase I detects the DDoS attack using a novel machine learning technique called SVM-HHO, which provides information about the vehicle. Phase II mitigates the impact of a DDoS attack and allocates bandwidth using a reliable resources management technique based on the hybrid whale dragonfly optimization algorithm (H-WDFOA). This proposed model could be an effective technique predicting and utilizing reliable information that provides effective results in smart vehicles. The novel machine learning-based technique was implemented through MATLAB and NS2 platforms. Network quality measurements included congestion, transit, collision, and QoS awareness cost. Based on the constraints, a different cost framework was designed. In addition, data preprocessing of the QoS factor and total routing costs were considered. Rider integrated cuckoo search (RI-CS) is a novel optimization algorithm that combines the concepts of the rider optimization algorithm (ROA) and cuckoo search (CS) to determine the optimal route with the lowest routing cost. The enhanced hybrid ant colony optimization routing protocol (EHACORP) is a networking technology that increases efficiency by utilizing the shortest route. The shortest path of the proposed protocol had the lowest communication overhead and the fewest number of hops between sending and receiving vehicles. The EHACORP involved two stages. To find the distance between cars in phase 1, EHACORP employed a method for calculating distance. Using starting point ant colony optimization, the ants were guided in phase 2 to develop the shortest route with the least number of connections to send information. The relatively short approach increases protocol efficiency in every way. The pairing of DCM and SBACO at H-WDFOA-VANET accelerated packet processing, reduced ant search time, eliminated blind broadcasting, and prevented stagnation issues. The delivery ratio and throughput of the H-WDFOA-packet VANET benefitted from its use of the shortest channel without stagnation, its rapid packet processing, and its rapid convergence speed. In conclusion, the proposed hybrid whale dragonfly optimization approach (H-WDFOA-VANET) was compared with industry standard models, such as rider integrated cuckoo search (RI-CS) and enhanced hybrid ant colony optimization routing protocol (EHACORP). With the proposed method, throughput could be increased. The proposed system had energy consumption values of 2.00000mJ, latency values of 15.61668s, and a drop at node 60 of 0.15759. Additionally, a higher throughput was achieved with the new method. With the suggested method, it is possible to meet the energy consumption targets, delay value, and drop value at node 60. The proposed method reduces the drop value at node 80 to 0.15504, delay time to 15.64318s, and energy consumption to 2.00000mJ. These outcomes demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method. Thus, the proposed system is more efficient than existing systems.

Abstract:Today, the use of safety solutions in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is a serious challenge because of novel progress in wireless technologies and the high number of road accidents. Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is a momentous element in this system because they can improve safety and efficiency in ITS. In this network, vehicles act as moving nodes and work with other nodes within their communication range. Due to high-dynamic vehicles and their different speeds in this network, links between vehicles are valid for a short time interval. Therefore, routing is a challenging work in these networks. Recently, reinforcement learning (RL) plays a significant role in developing routing algorithms for VANET. In this paper, we review reinforcement learning and its characteristics and study how to use this technique for creating routing protocols in VANETs. We propose a categorization of RL-based routing schemes in these networks. This paper helps researchers to understand how to design RL-based routing algorithms in VANET and improve the existing methods by understanding the challenges and opportunities in this area.

Abstract:With the development of artificial intelligence technology, deep reinforcement learning (DRL) has become a major approach to the design of intelligent vehicle-to-everything (V2X) routing protocols for vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). However, if the V2X routing protocol does not consider both real-time traffic conditions and historical vehicle trajectory information, the source vehicle may not transfer its packet to the correct relay vehicles and, finally, to the destination. Thus, this kind of routing protocol fails to guarantee successful packet delivery. Using the greater network flexibility and scalability of the software-defined network (SDN) architecture, this study designs a two-phase integrated DQN and RF Packet Routing Framework (IDRF) that combines the deep Q-learning network (DQN) and random forest (RF) approaches. First, the IDRF offline phase corrects the vehicle's historical trajectory information using the vehicle trajectory continuity algorithm and trains the DQN model. Then, the IDRF real-time phase judges whether vehicles can meet each other and makes a real-time routing decision to select the most appropriate relay vehicle after adding real-time vehicles to the VANET. In this way, the IDRF can obtain the packet transfer path with the shortest end-to-end delay. Compared to two DQN-based approaches, i.e., TDRL-RP and VRDRT, and traditional VANET routing algorithms, the IDRF exhibits significant performance improvements for both sparse and congested periods during intensive simulations of the historical GPS trajectories of 10,357 taxis within Beijing city. Performance improvements in the average packet delivery ratio, end-to-end delay, and overhead ratio of the IDRF over TDRL-RP and VRDRT under different numbers of pairs and transmission ranges are at least 3.56%, 12.73%, and 5.14% and 6.06%, 11.84%, and 7.08%, respectively.

Abstract:In modern cities, vehicle ad hoc networks (VANETs) hold great promise for improving safety on the roads, traffic control, and communicating. The constantly changing and intricate nature of VANETs hampers adequate routing due to a variety of factors. The work examines the use of a multitiered metaheuristic algorithm that combines Bellman–Ford routing with the Fire Hawk, Gannet Optimization, and Mayfly Optimization algorithms to find optimal routing solutions for VANETs. The suggested work addresses network topological dynamics, actual time limitations, flexibility, connectivity problems, and security issues, in addition to the different quality of service (QoS) requirements in VANETs. Bellman–Ford serves as the foundational routing layer and maintains communication, whereas Fire Hawk, Gannet Optimization, and Mayfly Optimization improve and optimize routing patterns at subsequent levels. The multitier approach aims to strike a balance between the rational and probabilistic aspects of routing so as to satisfy the minimal latency needs of applications that are safety‐critical and respond quickly to the rapid changes in VANETs. The suggested work is evaluated with a traffic density ranging from 500 to 5000 with a step size of 500, and it has been observed that for the highest traffic density of 5000, the proposed work obtains a latency of 3.88 ms, data delivery rate of 0.944, a throughput of 2.94 Mbps, and energy efficiency of 97.14%. The proposed work remains robust compared to integrating state‐of‐the‐art metaheuristic algorithms such as ECRA, HOPRP, and CM. Overall, the proposed routing techniques increase routing efficiency in VANETs and make it possible to create vehicle communication networks that are more trustworthy and safe.

Abstract:High topology dynamics and intermittent connectivity in Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET) bring huge challenges to end-to-end communication. Existing routing protocols for MANET such as AODV and OLSR work fine under modest mobility, but have a difficult time to handle frequent topology changes in VANET. This paper proposes Peeking at the Past and Present Routing ((PR)-R-3), a routing protocol that will calculate next-hops when the past forwarding is considered invalid. The nexthop calculation is based on the predicted locations of forwarder's neighbors and the packet's destination node, overcoming the inaccuracy caused by stale location information. Furthermore, we differentiate vehicles on crossroads as they have high connectivity in actual urban streets. In this way, (PR)-R-3 is able to deal with link breakages quickly and exploit new links. Simulation results show that (PR)-R-3 outperforms state-of-the-art alternatives in terms of packet delivery ratio, delay and cost, while maintaining strong scalability and robustness. We also implement (PR)-R-3 in a real vehicular testbed and the results reveal it has high connectivity on real streets.

Abstract:Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) face significant challenges in providing high-quality service. These networks enable vehicles to exchange critical information, such as road obstacles and accidents, and support various communication modes known as Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X). This research paper proposes an intelligent method to improve the quality of service by optimizing path selection between vehicles, aiming to minimize network overhead and enhance routing efficiency. The proposed approach integrates Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) into the Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol. The effectiveness of this method is validated through implementation and simulation experiments conducted using the Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) and the network simulator (NS3). Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the traditional OLSR algorithm in terms of throughput, average packet delivery rate (PDR), end-to-end delay (E2ED), and average routing overhead.

Abstract:The rapid growth of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) has generated significant interest in routing techniques for vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) in both academic and industrial communities. To address the complexity of urban environments and dynamic vehicle mobility, we propose a hierarchical Q-learning-based routing algorithm with grouped roadside unit (RSU) for VANETs. RSUs are grouped, and a Q-vector containing group information is exchanged through vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications. Q-vector-based road-segment (QVRS) control messages are periodically broadcasted to refresh the V2X evaluation metric, which considers vehicle positions, velocities, directions, and communication conditions. To adapt to the nonstationary vehicular environment, a multi-agent reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm is performed on RSUs at each intersection to achieve distributed learning and local decisions. The hierarchical Q-learning algorithm trains group Q-table and local Q-table individually for reaching destinations on each RSU. The optimal data routing behavior is conducted with two separate Q-tables by utilizing the integrated V2X metric as the reward function. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed method reduces broadcasting overhead, prolongs path lifetime and maintains a high packet delivery ratio and low average end-to-end delay. The incorporation of group design in our method accelerates the learning process, which facilitates more efficient communication in VANETs.

Abstract:Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) play a critical role in ensuring safety and welfare applications for drivers and passengers amidst the escalating vehicular population in urban environments. The efficient functioning of VANETs hinges on addressing the challenge of load balancing among Road Side Units (RSUs). This paper introduces a groundbreaking approach aimed at enhancing real-time data transmission services within VANETs. The key contribution lies in the development of a multicast routing algorithm utilizing a geo-targeting protocol, facilitating simultaneous delivery of source data packets to multiple destinations. This innovative strategy aims to alleviate RSU congestion, thereby significantly enhancing the quality of real-time data transmission services. Moreover, this study presents advancements in the Statistical Match and Queuing algorithm, refining it over time to substantially mitigate network congestion and redundancy. Additionally, a Multi-Protocol Label Switching based algorithm is implemented to elevate service quality parameters, including end-to-end latency, packet loss, and overall network efficiency within in-vehicle networks. Importantly, this approach remains adaptable across various Layer two technologies, ensuring compatibility and scalability. Simulation results validate the efficacy of the proposed methodology, showcasing its superiority over existing methods. The findings underscore the innovative algorithms ' prowess in addressing load balancing challenges across diverse scenarios, affirming their potential to significantly enhance VANET service quality.

Abstract:Vehicle ad hoc networks (VANETs) are a vital part of intelligent transportation systems (ITS), offering a variety of advantages from reduced traffic to increased road safety. Despite their benefits, VANETs remain vulnerable to various security threats, including severe blackhole attacks. In this paper, we propose a deep-learning-based secure routing (DLSR) protocol using a deep-learning-based clustering (DLC) protocol to establish a secure route against blackhole attacks. The main features and contributions of this paper are as follows. First, the DLSR protocol utilizes deep learning (DL) at each node to choose secure routing or normal routing while establishing secure routes. Additionally, we can identify the behavior of malicious nodes to determine the best possible next hop based on its fitness function value. Second, the DLC protocol is considered an underlying structure to enhance connectivity between nodes and reduce control overhead. Third, we design a deep neural network (DNN) model to optimize the fitness function in both DLSR and DLC protocols. The DLSR protocol considers parameters such as remaining energy, distance, and hop count, while the DLC protocol considers cosine similarity, cosine distance, and the node's remaining energy. Finally, from the performance results, we evaluate the performance of the proposed routing and clustering protocol in the viewpoints of packet delivery ratio, routing delay, control overhead, packet loss ratio, and number of packet losses. Additionally, we also exploit the impact of the mobility model such as reference point group mobility (RPGM) and random waypoint (RWP) on the network metrics.
Keep Forwarding Path Freshest in VANET Via Applying Reinforcement Learning

Abstract:In Vehicular Ad Hoc NETworks (VANET), dynamic topology changes of network and inconstant bandwidth make it hard to maintain an end-to-end path to complete long-time stable data transmission. Facing this challenge, researchers have proposed the hybrid routing approach, which tries to combine both the advantages of recalculating route when topology changes and looking up routing table as long as the network topology is relatively stable. However, the existing hybrid routing algorithms can easily cause the blind path problem, meaning a route entry is kept in the routing table without expiration according to the timeout mechanism but it is actually invalid, because the next hop is already unavailable. To address this issue, we propose a Reinforcement learning based Hybrid Routing algorithm (RHR) that can online track the available paths with their status and use packet-carry-on information as real-time feedback to guide routing. RHR keeps the forwarding path always the freshest and thus improves the system performance. Simulation results show that RHR achieves better performance in packet delivery ratio (PDR), roundtrip time (RTT) and overhead than other peers under different scenarios of network scale, request frequency and vehicle velocity.

Abstract:The Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) is an innovative technology that allows vehicles to connect with neighboring roadside structures to deliver intelligent transportation applications. To deliver safe communication among vehicles, a reliable routing approach is required. Due to the excessive mobility and frequent variation in network topology, establishing a reliable routing for VANETs takes a lot of work. In VANETs, transmission links are extremely susceptible to interruption; as a result, the routing efficiency of these constantly evolving networks requires special attention. To promote reliable routing in VANETs, we propose a novel context-aware reliable routing protocol that integrates k-means clustering and support vector machine (SVM) in this paper. The k-means clustering divides the routes into two clusters named GOOD and BAD. The cluster with high mean square error (MSE) is labelled as BAD, and the cluster with low MSE is labelled as GOOD. After training the routing data with SVM, the performance of each route from source to target is improved in terms of Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR), throughput, and End to End Delay (E2E). The proposed protocol will achieve improved routing efficiency with these changes.

Abstract:VANET routing has become a very popular area of research as it lays the foundation for the intelligent transportation system (ITS). In VANET, the mobility of the vehicle is high hence the network is dynamic. Therefore, the connectivity between the two vehicles and the roadside unit (RSU) keeps changing, increasing the links dynamics and affecting the network quality of Service (QoS). To improve the VANETs' QoS in dynamic scenarios, an efficient routing protocol is designed and implemented. Here, VANET-generated packets are routed to the destination through the Onboard unit (OBU) of vehicles and roadside units (RSU). The simulation results using MATLAB 2022a demonstrate that end-to-end delay is 0.106s and packet lost ratio is 5.91 for the proposed algorithm indicating our proposed algorithm performs better than the protocols like EERM, MAODV, and SDIoV. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol outperforms over previous algorithms in terms of QoS metrics e.g., packet delivery ratio (PDR), normalized routing load (NRL), energy usage (EU), and throughput.

Abstract:Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) have attracted great interests from both industry and academia. The developments of VANETs are heavily influenced by information and communications technologies, which have fueled a plethora of innovations in various areas, including networking, caching and computing. Nevertheless, these important enabling technologies have traditionally been studied separately in the existing works on vehicular networks. In this paper, we propose an integrated framework that can enable dynamic orchestration of networking, caching and computing resources to improve the performance of next generation vehicular networks. We formulate the resource allocation strategy in this framework as a joint optimization problem, where the gains of not only networking but also caching and computing are taken into consideration in the proposed framework. The complexity of the system is very high when we jointly consider these three technologies. Therefore, we propose a novel deep reinforcement learning approach in this paper. Simulation results with different system parameters are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) that are considered as a subset of Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) can be applied in the field of transportation especially in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The routing process in these networks is a challenging task due to rapid topology changes, high vehicle mobility and frequent disconnection of links. Therefore, developing an efficient routing protocol that satisfies restriction of delay and minimum overhead is faced with many difficulties and limitations. Also, the detection of malicious vehicles is a significant task in VANETs. To address these issues, using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can be helpful to cope with these limitations. In this paper, operation of UAVs in ad hoc mode and their cooperation with vehicles in VANETs are studied to help in the process of routing and detection of malicious vehicles. A routing protocol named VRU is proposed that includes two distinct ways of routing of data: (1) delivering packets of data between vehicles with the help of UAVs using a protocol named VRU_vu, and (2) routing packet of data between UAVs using a protocol named VRU_u. The NS-2.35 simulator under Linux Ubuntu 12.04 is utilized in order to appraise the performance of VRU routing components in an urban scenario. Also, VanetMobiSim generator of mobility and MobiSim are used to produce the motions of vehicles and to produce the motions of UAVs, respectively. The performance analysis displays that VRU protocol can improve the packet delivery ratio by 16% and detection ratio by 7% compared to other reviewed routing protocol. Also, VRU protocol decreases end-to-end delay by an average of 13% and overhead by 40%.

Abstract:The research addresses ITS challenges in accurate info transmission in V2V and V2R communication within VANETs, focusing on urban areas with high traffic. A self‐adaptive search optimization technique is proposed for VANET clustering, prioritizing vehicles based on energy, acceleration, jitter, priority, velocity, and trust. The technique's evaluation values are 0.53 s throughput, 36.07 km/h velocity, 3.472 s jitter, and 43.572% SDTT with 50 vehicles in a 50 s test that highlights its potential for improved VANET communication and traffic management. Summary In recent days, VANET is considered as the main hopeful equipment in the system of transportation since traffic congestion arises regularly and thus occurred road accidents very easily. Besides, the network traffic is increasing due to the huge quantity of information generated in region of urban. Therefore, one of the primary challenges faced by Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is ensuring the accurate transmission of information in both vehicle‐to‐vehicle (V2V) and vehicle‐to‐road (V2R) sensing unit communications. So, here, an adaptive routing controller (ARC) is utilized to improve the data transmission between vehicle and road sensing unit (RSU) and to minimize the traffic density in VANET, and the self‐adaptive search optimization is developed in VANET clustering to prioritize vehicles in the lane, in which the multi‐objective function is intended depending on the energy of the node, acceleration, jitter, priority, velocity, and trust factors. The traffic light control is done to facilitate the effective communication in the network. Thus, the proposed technique is calculated in terms of throughput, jitter, quadratic mean of acceleration (QMA), and spatially distributed travel time (SDTT), which acquired the values of 0.53 s, 36.07 kmph, 3.472 s, and 43.572%, respectively, while using 50 vehicles at 50 s.
