Abstract:Using an electron microscope to observe the microstructure of a porcupine quills cross-section and a bionic method, a new bionic structure was proposed. The performance of the structure in terms of energy absorption, maximum impact force withstood, and impact force efficiency was evaluated using Ansys finite element simulation software to simulate the structure's impact. To examine the impact of ribs on the structural performance of the bionic porcupine quills, a control structure was developed. According to the results of the finite element simulation, the presence of ribs in the Bionic porcupine quills structure can transfer stress uniformly to the overall structure and share stress for some of the rupture-prone regions. Ribs reduce stress concentration in specific areas and increase the impact force efficiency of the structure. The SEA and IFE values of bionic porcupine quills were 30.01 kJ/kg and 84.22%, respectively. The structure is then optimized for parameter design in order to find the optimal structure by response surface in order to improve the structure's SEA and decrease its MIF. In order to evaluate the precision of the response surface, the optimal structure predicted is validated using finite element simulation.

Abstract:Converting common biomass materials to high-performance biomedical products could not only reduce the environmental pressure associated with the large-scale use of synthetic materials, but also increase the economic value. Chitosan as a very promising candidate has drawn considerable attention owing to its abundant sources and remarkable bioactivities. However, pure chitosan materials usually exhibit insufficient mechanical properties and excessive swelling ratio, which seriously affected their in vivo stability and integrity when applied as tissue engineering scaffolds. Thus, simultaneously improving the mechanical strength and biological compatibility of pure chitosan (CS) scaffolds becomes very important. Here, inspired by the fiber-reinforced construction of natural extracellular matrix and the porous structure of cancellous bone, we built silk microfibers/chitosan composite scaffolds via ice-templating technique. This biomimetic strategy achieved 500% of mechanical improvement to pure chitosan, and meanwhile still maintaining high porosity (> 87%). In addition, the increased roughness of chitosan pore walls by embedded silk microfibers significantly promoted cell adhesion and proliferation. More importantly, after subcutaneous implantation in mice for four weeks, the composite scaffold showed greater structural integrity, as well as better collagenation, angiogenesis, and osteogenesis abilities, suggesting its great potential in biomedicine.
Microstructured barbs on the North American porcupine quill enable easy tissue penetration and difficult removal

Abstract:North American porcupines are well known for their specialized hairs, or quills that feature microscopic backward-facing deployable barbs that are used in self-defense. Herein we show that the natural quill’s geometry enables easy penetration and high tissue adhesion where the barbs specifically contribute to adhesion and unexpectedly, dramatically reduce the force required to penetrate tissue. Reduced penetration force is achieved by topography that appears to create stress concentrations along regions of the quill where the cross sectional diameter grows rapidly, facilitating cutting of the tissue. Barbs located near the first geometrical transition zone exhibit the most substantial impact on minimizing the force required for penetration. Barbs at the tip of the quill independently exhibit the greatest impact on tissue adhesion force and the cooperation between barbs in the 0–2 mm and 2–4 mm regions appears critical to enhance tissue adhesion force. The dual functions of barbs were reproduced with replica molded synthetic polyurethane quills. These findings should serve as the basis for the development of bio-inspired devices such as tissue adhesives or needles, trocars, and vascular tunnelers where minimizing the penetration force is important to prevent collateral damage.

Hierarchical network structural composites for extraordinary energy dissipation inspired by the cat paw

Abstract:The proverbial "nine lives" of cats are attributed to the capacity of the felines to withstand jumps and falls from a high-rise without being fatally wounded, and this is due in large part to their impact-resistant paw pads. The pads possess a complex architecture of multiscale collagen fiber networks and adipose mass chambers. We propose in this paper the concept of a hierarchical composite made of porous polyurethane (PU) main network skeletons coated with graphene oxide (GO)/multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), freeze-dry constructed secondary membrane network configurations with GO/MWCNTs, and embedded in a polyborondimethylsiloxane (PBDMS) matrix. The design of the composite is inspired by the architectures of collagens present in the cat paw and the composites provide significant creep resistance, load bearing, shape recovery and also stiffness tailoring. More importantly, the hierarchical composites possess remarkable high energy dissipations during quasi-static cyclic compression and dynamic mechanical loadings as vibration (damping capacity: 160% increase compared to the pure matrix) and impact (impacting energy absorption: similar to 100%). The multiscale deformation mechanisms are analyzed and discussed with the support of finite element simulations. The main fibrous and secondary membranous networks generated during the manufacturing of the composite act as multiscale confinements to the lipid-like matrix, so that the matrix with reversible B-O bonds can significantly contribute to the unusual energy dissipation characteristics. Similar to the cat paws, the hierarchical composites are also soft, flexible and show significant potential for safety wearing devices in sport and broad engineering applications. Abstract:Artificial cellular materials with various mechanical functions are attracting increasing attentions from aerospace, transportation, and industrialization. However, many artificial cellular materials, despite of the hierarchically ordered structures and even unique performance to some, still lag behind many natural ones in amplification of mechanical functions owing to the limitations in intrinsic mechanical performance and sophisticated structural design. Herein, inspired with lightweight and high strength of sunflower piths, we proposed a dual-gradient structure consisting of pore size gradient and wall thickness gradient to engineer cellular architectures with desirable mechanical performance by harnessing vat photopolymerization 3D printing of double crosslinking networks polyurethane elastomer. The double-gradient cellular polyurethane architecture displays more exceptional capability in load-bearing and energy absorption compared with non- and single gradient structures. Besides, the specific compressive strength and energy absorption of the dual-gradient cellular architectures are 4 times higher than those of traditional mechanical metamaterial structures such as octet-truss lattice, gyroid lattice, and porous structure prepared with the same material. Potential mechanisms such as dualgradient cellular structures to obtain selective flexural deformation behaviour increasing their energy absorption and dissipation capacity are fully elucidated. As the potential paradigms, we demonstrated the mechanical functions of biomimetic mechanical cellular architectures for efficient impact protection and noise isolation, which offered a promising perspective toward developing soft metamaterials with excellent mechanical functions for potential soft machines and engineering applications.

Abstract:The high impact and penetration resistance of the cuticle in the lobster Homarus americanus can be attributed to its unique twisted plywood structure. Hybridization of two helical structures was observed in the exoskeleton, with different pitch angles and ply thickness of the exocuticle and endocuticle within the exoskeleton. Given the survival challenges posed by the natural environment, it is worthwhile to study why it evolved into a hybrid helical rather than a uniform helical structure. In light of this, we have proposed an innovative bionic hybrid helical structure design strategy that goes beyond simply reducing the pitch angle. In this paper, we replicated complex biological microstructures by introducing two types of pitch angles and ply thicknesses for regional configurations. Quasi Static Indentation (QSI) full-penetration experiments were conducted. Experimental results revealed that the exocuticle with a large pitch angle and small ply thickness possesses a higher knee load under the penetration test, which provides a higher initial damage threshold. On the other hand, the endocuticle with a small pitch angle and large ply thickness induces higher damage dissipation, which provides superior protective performance. These research findings demonstrate that ply hybridization can be a promising method for microstructure design to improve the penetration resistance of thin laminates and serve as a reference for developing more refined gradient helical structure designs.

Abstract:The gular sac tissue of brown pelican featured by the curvy pattern of fibers has an excellent combination of strain-stiffening behavior and fracture resistance. We develop an embroidery-reinforcement and solvent-welding strategy to fabricate a biomimetic elastomer with similar structure to that of the gular sac tissue. The embroidery reinforcement enables a well-designed biomimetic pattern of aramid fibers, and the solvent welding induces strong interfacial interaction between the aramid fibers and polyurethane matrix. This strategy endows the composite with excellent strain-stiffening behavior, fracture resistance, mechanical strength, and toughness, which are even better than the living prototype. Finite elements analysis reveals that the curvy pattern and strong interfacial interaction are crucial for both the J-shape behavior and the mechanical properties. The facile and robust strategy can be extended to other fibers reinforced polymers and should be promising for development of strong and tough soft materials with "J-shape" behavior.

Abstract:A new assembly design method for structural components is proposed. Inspired by the feathers of the grey crane, which have an energy dissipation effect, novel re-entrant scapus component and novel re-entrant double-crank component are proposed. Novel re-entrant structures are formed by assembling honeycomb structure (HS), poisson structure (PS), and chiral structure (CS). Laser powder bed fusion technology (LPBF) is utilized for the manufacturing of bio-inspired structures. And the impact of structural assembly on mechanical performance is comprehensively analyzed through experimental, numerical, and theoretical approaches. Euler theory is employed to predict the influence of bionic components on structural load trends, while explaining the relationship between compression load and deformation. Specifically, the average load capacity of bio-inspired scapus re-entrant structures and double-crank re-entrant structures exceeds that of their original designs by at least 55% and 13.2%, respectively. Moreover, specific energy absorption increases by a minimum of 8.6% and 3.4%, accompanied by improved heat dissipation performance in these structures. Finally, battery pack impact resistance models as well as thermal conductivity models for electric-powered vehicles are presented as examples to validate the potential application prospects of this novel bio-inspired re-entrant structure in engineering.

Parametric analysis on axial compression performance of bio-inspired porous lattice structures

Abstract:The porous lattice structures (PLSs) have the advantages of excellent mechanical properties and light weight. Inspired by the structural shape of lotus root, this work proposes four lotus root-shaped bio-inspired PLSs (BPSs), which are triangular BPS (TBPS), quadrangular BPS (QBPS), pentagonal BPS (PBPS) and hexagonal BPS (HBPS). The axial compression properties of these BPSs are investigated. All of these four structures have uniform structural stiffness and excellent energy absorption properties. They exhibit stable deformation modes of X-shape and single-headed axe. In addition, the effects of geometric parameters and cell arrangements on the compression performance of these BPSs are investigated. The BPSs with different geometric parameters show various deformation modes such as single-headed axe, double-headed axe, sun and turtle shapes. The BPSs with different cell arrangements exhibit rich deformation modes such as crescent, dart, X and V shapes. Their cells show the deformation modes of axial crushing and bending, and the axial crushing deformation mode is more conducive to obtaining stable compression performance. Furthermore, the sample of QBPS is manufactured through 3D printing, and the compression experiment is performed to verify the simulation model. These results show that the BPSs are excellent energy-absorbing structures that have wide application prospects.

Abstract:Lightweight porous materials with high load-bearing, damage tolerance and energy absorption as well as intelligence of shape recovery after material deformation are beneficial and critical for many applications, e.g., aerospace, automobiles, electronics, etc. Cuttlebone produced in the cuttlefish has evolved vertical walls with the optimal corrugation gradient, enabling stress homogenization, significant load bearing, and damage tolerance to protect the organism from high external pressures in the deep sea. This work illustrated that the complex hybrid wave shape in cuttlebone walls, becoming more tortuous from bottom to top, creates a lightweight, load-bearing structure with progressive failure. By mimicking the cuttlebone, a novel bionic hybrid structure (BHS) was proposed, and as a comparison, a regular corrugated structure (RCS) and a straight wall structure (SWS) were designed. Three types of designed structures have been successfully manufactured by laser powder bed fusion with NiTi powder. The LPBF-processed BHS exhibited a total porosity of 0.042% and a good dimensional accuracy with a peak deviation of 17.4 μm. Microstructural analysis indicated that the LPBF-processed BHS had a strong (001) crystallographic orientation and an average size of 9.85 μm. Mechanical analysis revealed the LPBF-processed BHS could withstand over 25 000 times its weight without significant deformation and had the highest specific energy absorption value (5.32 J/g) due to the absence of stress concentration and progressive wall failure during compression. Cyclic compression testing showed that LPBF-processed BHS possessed superior viscoelastic and elasticity energy dissipation capacity. Importantly, the uniform reversible phase transition from martensite to austenite in the walls enables the structure to largely recover its pre-deformation shape when heated (over 99% recovery rate). These design strategies can serve as valuable references for the development of intelligent components that possess high mechanical efficiency and shape memory capabilities.

Abstract:Energy absorption and dissipation features of mechanical metamaterials have widespread applications in everyday life, ranging from absorbing shock impacts to mechanical vibrations. This paper proposes novel bio‐inspired friction‐based mechanical metamaterials with a zero Poisson's ratio (ZPR) behavior inspired from parrot's beaks and manufactured additively. The mechanical performances of the corresponding metamaterials are studied at both macro and micro scales by experiments and finite element analysis (FEA). An excellent agreement is observed between the FEA and both microscopic and macroscopic scale experiments, showing the accuracy of the developed digital tool. Performances are compared to traditional triangular lattice metamaterials. Both experimental tests and FEA results demonstrate the following advantages: i) absorbing and dissipating energy per unit of mass (SEA) at large compressive strains without global buckling; ii) bi‐stable deformation patterns including friction‐based and interlocking mechanisms, iii) reversible deformation patterns after unloading; iv) shape recovery behavior after a heating‐cooling process, and v) the higher elastic modulus of micro metamaterials compared to their macro counterparts. This is the first demonstration of a bio‐inspired friction‐based design of 3D printed mechanical metamaterials that feature absorbing/dissipating energy, stability and reversibility properties to cater to a wide range of sustainable meta‐cylinders in micro and macro scales. Anisotropic Microstructure and Performance Characterization of Wild Silkworm Cocoons for Designing Biomimetic Protective Materials

Abstract:As a unique and important biopolymer composite, silkworm cocoons have evolved a wide range of different structures and combinations of physical and chemical properties to resist environmental damage and attacks from natural predators. A combination of characterization techniques including scanning electron microscopy, mechanical tests, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were applied to investigate the morphologies, mechanical properties, and nanoscale organizations of Antheraea pernyi cocoons from two different source regions. Mechanical tests were carried out by using rectangular specimens cut from four directions 0° (width of the cocoons), ±45°, and 90° (the length of the cocoon), separately. The mechanical properties such as tensile strength, initial modulus, and maximum load of cocoon in four directions were measured. The structural analysis of silkworm cocoon shows that there is a slightly different combination of morphology and properties that have adapted to coping with diverse local environments. The results of the mechanical properties of silkworm cocoons show that the A. pernyi cocoon from north of China behaved stronger and tougher. Besides, there were slight differences among the results of mechanical properties for 0°, ±45°, and 90° directions of these cocoons. Our studies will help formulate bio-inspired design principles for new materials.
Bamboo-Inspired Porous Scaffolds for Advanced Orthopedic Implants: Design, Mechanical Properties, and Fluid Characteristics

Abstract:In orthopedic implant development, incorporating a porous structure into implants can reduce the elastic modulus to prevent stress shielding but may compromise yield strength, risking prosthesis fracture. Bamboo's natural structure, with its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, serves as inspiration. This study explores biomimicry using bamboo-inspired porous scaffolds (BISs) resembling cortical bone, assessing their mechanical properties and fluid characteristics. The BIS consists of two 2D units controlled by structural parameters α and β. The mechanical properties, failure mechanisms, energy absorption, and predictive performance are investigated. BIS exhibits mechanical properties equivalent to those of natural bone. Specifically, α at 4/3 and β at 2/3 yield superior mechanical properties, and the destruction mechanism occurs layer by layer. Besides, the Gibson-Ashby models with different parameters are established to predict mechanical properties. Fluid dynamics analysis reveals two high-flow channels in BISs, enhancing nutrient delivery through high-flow channels and promoting cell adhesion and proliferation in low-flow regions. For wall shear stress below 30 mPa (ideal for cell growth), α at 4/3 achieves the highest percentage (99.04%), and β at 2/3 achieves 98.46%. Permeability in all structural parameters surpasses that of human bone. Enhanced performance of orthopedic implants through a bionic approach that enables the creation of pore structures suitable for implants.

Abstract:Hedgehog spines with evolved unique structures are studied on account of their remarkable mechanical efficiency. However, because of limitations of existing knowledge, it remains unclear how spines work as a material with a balance of stiffness and toughness. By combining qualitative three-dimensional (3D) structural characterization, material composition analysis, biomechanical analysis, and parametric simulations, the relationship between microstructural characteristic and multifunctional features of hedgehog spines is revealed here. The result shows that the fibers transform from the outer cortex to the interior cellular structures by the “T” section composed of the “L” section and a deltoid. The outer cortex, however, shows an arrangement of a layered fibrous structure. An inward change in Young's moduli is observed. In addition, these spines are featured with a sandwich structure that combines an inner porous core with an outer dense cortex. This feature confirms that the hedgehog spines are a kind of biological functionally graded fiber-reinforced composite. Biomimetic models based on the spine are then built, and the corresponding mechanical performance is tested. The results confirm that the internal cellular structure of the spine effectively improve impact resistance. Furthermore, the transverse diaphragm can prevent ellipticity, which may delay buckling. The longitudinal stiffeners also contribute to promote buckling resistance. The design strategies of the spine proposed here provide inspirations for designing T-joint composites. It also exhibits potential applications in low-density, impact and buckling resistance artificial composites.Statement of significanceThe spines of a hedgehog are its protective armor that combines strength and toughness. The animal can not only withstand longitudinal and radial forces that are 1 × 106∼ 3 × 106 times the gravity generated by its own weight, but it can also survive unscathed by elastic buckling while dropping to the ground at a speed of up to 15 m/s. Here, we first demonstrate that hedgehog spines are biological graded fiber-reinforced structural composites and reveal their superior impact and buckling resistance mechanism through simulation analysis. Our results broaden the understanding of the relationship among morphology, materials, and function of hedgehog spines. It is anticipated that the survival strategies of hedgehog revealed here could provide inspirations for the development of synthetic composites with impact resistance and structural stability.

Abstract:Multibiological multiscale biomimetic design is a novel bionic idea that involves multi-mechanisms. The microstructure and mechanical properties of biomimetic ceramics are, respectively, characterised using scanning electron microscopy and universal testing machine. Moreover, the porosity, reliability and grain boundary stress of biomimetic ceramics are calculated via Archimedes method, Weibull theory and finite element method, respectively. Results show that the ceramic produced in this work has a porosity of 88.16% and an average pore size of 284.65 mu m. Mineral bridges of Al2TiO5 with a thickness of 30-230 mm are widely and randomly distributed in the grain boundary glass phase of Al2O3 and improved the compressive strength (2.32 MPa) and Weibull modulus (7.85) of ceramics by the multi-mechanisms of crack deflection, reducing maximum stress and homogenising stress on the grain boundary. These investigations would be of great value to the design and synthesis of novel biomimetic materials. (C) 2019 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
Multiscale Structural Design and Fracture Control of High-Performance Biomimetic Materials

Abstract:Bioinspired architectural design for composites with much higher impact-resistance and fracture-resistance than that of individual constituent remains a major challenge for engineers and scientists. Inspired by the survival war between the mantis shrimps and abalones, we develop multiscale mechanical methods to design structures and control fractures in high-performance biomimetic materials. The first point is the optimization design of impact-resistant nacre-like materials [1-4]. By a combination of simulation, additive manufacturing, and drop tower testing we revealed that, at a critical interfacial strength or a critical prestress, the competition between intralayer cracks and interlayer delamination, or the synergistic effect between the prestress-enhanced tablets sliding and prestress-weakened structural integrality, result in optimized impact resistance of nacre-like structures. Furthermore, the interfacial strength design and the prestressing strategy were easily implemented to a designed nacre-inspired separator to enhance the impact resistance of lithium batteries. Later, we designed a discontinuous fibrous Bouligand (DFB) architecture [5], whose fracture-energy dissipations are insensitive to initial crack-orientations and show optimized values at critical pitch angles. Fracture mechanics analyses demonstrate that the hybrid toughening mechanisms of crack twisting and crack bridging mode arising from DFB architecture enable excellent fracture-resistance with crack-orientation insensitivity. The compromise in competition of energy dissipations between crack twisting and crack bridging is identified as the origin of maximum fracture energy at a critical pitch angle. We further illustrate that the optimized fracture energy can be achieved by tuning fracture energy of crack bridging, pitch angles, fiber lengths and twist angles distribution in DFB composites. Our findings shed light on how nature have evolved materials to exceptional impact resistance and fracture toughness, and provide the generic design strategies for bioinspired formidable impactresistant and fracture-resistant materials.
Mechanically Efficient Cellular Materials Inspired by Cuttlebone

Abstract:Cellular materials with excellent mechanical efficiency are essential for aerospace structures, lightweight vehicles, and energy absorption. However, current synthetic cellular materials, such as lattice materials with a unit cell arranged in an ordered hierarchy, are still far behind many biological cellular materials in terms of both structural complexity and mechanical performance. Here, the complex porous structure and the mechanics of the cuttlebone are studied, which acts as a rigid buoyancy tank for cuttlefish to resist large hydrostatic pressure in the deep-sea environment. The cuttlebone structure, constructed like lamellar septa, separated by asymmetric, distorted S-shaped walls, exhibits superior strength and energy-absorption capability to the octet-truss lattice and conventional polymer and metal foams. Inspired by these findings, mechanically efficient cellular materials are designed and fabricated by 3D printing, which are greatly demanded for many applications including aerospace structures and tissue-engineering-scaffold. This study represents an effective approach for the design and engineering of high-performance cellular materials through bioinspired 3D printing.
