Abstract:Biological structural materials realize outstanding mechanical properties by assembling hard and soft components into complex hierarchical structures, which provide abundant inspirations for synthetic materials. Specifically, conch shell exhibits around ten times higher toughness than widely‐explored nacre due to its cross‐lamellar architecture at nano‐ to macroscopic scales. Previously, conch‐shell‐inspired materials are realized by 3D‐printing. However, it remains challenging to translate the properties of conch shell into synthetic materials because of the limited approaches to duplicating complex architecture with high ceramic contents. Here, a surface‐pattern‐induced ice‐templating strategy is reported to fabricate conch‐shell‐inspired composites with a cross‐lamellar structure across a 107‐fold range of length. This is realized by directional freezing on a grooved surface, which has previously been confirmed to induce preferential ice growth. These composites have a flexural strength of 165 MPa and a work of fracture of 8.2 kJ m–2, which are 2.5 and 2 times, respectively, higher than those of conch shell. Such conch‐shell‐inspired structure yields a toughness twice that of nacre‐mimetic structure due to multiple crack deflections. Additionally, the impact resistance of these composites is comparable to those of aluminum alloys. The research provides a feasible approach to fabricating bioinspired materials with complex architectures and multifunctionality.
Mechanically Efficient Cellular Materials Inspired by Cuttlebone

Abstract:Cellular materials with excellent mechanical efficiency are essential for aerospace structures, lightweight vehicles, and energy absorption. However, current synthetic cellular materials, such as lattice materials with a unit cell arranged in an ordered hierarchy, are still far behind many biological cellular materials in terms of both structural complexity and mechanical performance. Here, the complex porous structure and the mechanics of the cuttlebone are studied, which acts as a rigid buoyancy tank for cuttlefish to resist large hydrostatic pressure in the deep-sea environment. The cuttlebone structure, constructed like lamellar septa, separated by asymmetric, distorted S-shaped walls, exhibits superior strength and energy-absorption capability to the octet-truss lattice and conventional polymer and metal foams. Inspired by these findings, mechanically efficient cellular materials are designed and fabricated by 3D printing, which are greatly demanded for many applications including aerospace structures and tissue-engineering-scaffold. This study represents an effective approach for the design and engineering of high-performance cellular materials through bioinspired 3D printing.

Inhibition of cell proliferation and the action mechanisms of arsenic trioxide (As2O3) on human breast cancer cells

Abstract:Arsenic trioxide (As2O3) is one of the arsenic compounds found in nature. As2O3 has recently been used to treat patients suffering from retinoic acid receptor (AML). It is of clinical interest to investigate whether As2O3 is also effective in treating solid tumors. Here, we report that As2O3 exhibited inhibitory effects on the proliferation of human breast cancer MCF‐7 cells in a dose‐ and time‐dependent manner. The 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of As2O3 in inhibiting proliferation of MCF‐7 cells were 8, 1.8, and 1.2 μM upon 1‐, 2‐, and 3‐day treatment, respectively. In elucidating the underlying action mechanisms, the results of experiments concerning DNA fragmentation and externalization indicated that As2O3 exerted its action on MCF‐7 cells via apoptosis, whereas the result of flow cytometry also indicated that As2O3 could induce mitochondrial mediated cell‐cycle arrest at G1 phase. Further studies by Western blot analysis indicated that As2O3 regulated apoptosis and the expression of cell‐cycle‐related proteins as it upregulated p53 protein level and downregulated bcl‐2 protein level. Results in present study indicated that As2O3 might also be a good candidate for treating breast cancer. © 2004 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.
Novel cuttlebone-inspired hierarchical bionic structure enabled high energy absorption

Abstract:Bionic design is an effective strategy for obtaining lightweight, high-performance, and even multifunctional structures. Here, we found a novel hierarchical lamellar chamber microstructure in cuttlebone. To determine whether and how this cuttlebone-like hierarchical structure (CL-H) works on its mechanical properties, various lattices with CL-H cellular structure through digital light processing technique were designed and fabricated. Results showed that the CL-H lattice had excellent mechanical performances, achieving specific energy absorption up to a dozen times that of the non-hierarchical cuttlebone-like structure (CL) and triply periodic minimal surface structures. The CL-H lattices presented progressive failure behaviors depending on the numbers of sub-chambers. Furthermore, the mechanisms of energy absorption characteristic and failure behavior were systematically analyzed by combining microstructure examination and FEM simulation, and a schematic model was proposed. This study shed light on the design and engineering of advanced bio-inspired materials with excellent mechanical properties.

Abstract:Lightweight porous materials with high load-bearing, damage tolerance and energy absorption as well as intelligence of shape recovery after material deformation are beneficial and critical for many applications, e.g., aerospace, automobiles, electronics, etc. Cuttlebone produced in the cuttlefish has evolved vertical walls with the optimal corrugation gradient, enabling stress homogenization, significant load bearing, and damage tolerance to protect the organism from high external pressures in the deep sea. This work illustrated that the complex hybrid wave shape in cuttlebone walls, becoming more tortuous from bottom to top, creates a lightweight, load-bearing structure with progressive failure. By mimicking the cuttlebone, a novel bionic hybrid structure (BHS) was proposed, and as a comparison, a regular corrugated structure (RCS) and a straight wall structure (SWS) were designed. Three types of designed structures have been successfully manufactured by laser powder bed fusion with NiTi powder. The LPBF-processed BHS exhibited a total porosity of 0.042% and a good dimensional accuracy with a peak deviation of 17.4 μm. Microstructural analysis indicated that the LPBF-processed BHS had a strong (001) crystallographic orientation and an average size of 9.85 μm. Mechanical analysis revealed the LPBF-processed BHS could withstand over 25 000 times its weight without significant deformation and had the highest specific energy absorption value (5.32 J/g) due to the absence of stress concentration and progressive wall failure during compression. Cyclic compression testing showed that LPBF-processed BHS possessed superior viscoelastic and elasticity energy dissipation capacity. Importantly, the uniform reversible phase transition from martensite to austenite in the walls enables the structure to largely recover its pre-deformation shape when heated (over 99% recovery rate). These design strategies can serve as valuable references for the development of intelligent components that possess high mechanical efficiency and shape memory capabilities.

Abstract:Bone is a natural material with properties such as high specific stiffness and strength. These exceptional mechanical properties are attributed to the meso-scale structure and elastic anisotropy of spongy bone. Replicating the topological traits and mechanical properties of spongy bone presents a novel opportunity to develop highperformance cellular materials. To achieve this, we propose an innovative framework for designing biomimetic cellular materials that match the trabecular structure and elastic anisotropy of spongy bone. This framework introduces a forward-flow design process that utilizes gradient-based feature tuning on a lowdimensional feature vector, transforming the complex inverse design problem into an efficient iterative process. A key innovation in our approach is the use of a pre-trained generative model, SliceGAN, to reconstruct 3D unit cells from 2D micro-CT images. This significantly reduces the cost and time associated with traditional layerby-layer CT scans typically required for 3D training data. Numerical homogenization is then used to determine the effective elastic stiffness matrix, and a Fourier neural operator is trained to predict these matrices efficiently, greatly enhancing the computational efficiency of the design process. Using this framework, we successfully designed unit cells with topological traits and elastic anisotropy that closely approximate those of natural spongy bone. This opens new avenues for developing spongy-bone-mimetic cellular materials with exceptional mechanical properties. Moreover, the framework's versatility allows it to be extended to the design of other bioinspired cellular materials.

Abstract:While engineering cellular solids, either stochastic foams or architected lattices, are usually made of polycrystalline or amorphous materials, echinoderms (e.g., sea urchins, starfish, and brittle stars) build their microporous skeletal elements with single-crystalline calcite. This class of biomineralized cellular solid, known as stereom, also exhibits a vast diversity in pore morphology, ranging from random open-cell foams to fully periodic lattices. In particular, the skeletal elements of some starfish species, known as ossicles, are composed of a diamond-triply periodic minimal surface (diamond-TPMS) microlattice. In addition, the crystallographic symmetries at both atomic (calcite) and lattice (diamond-TPMS) levels are precisely aligned. Here we investigate the mechanical performance of this unique dual-scale microlattice and discuss the synergistic effects of atomic- and lattice-scale crystallographic coalignment. Our computational and theoretical analysis suggests that the mechanical isotropy of ossicles is significantly enhanced due to the property compensation between the atomic-level and lattice-level architectures. Moreover, the observed 50 vol% relative density in the diamond-TPMS microlattice of ossicles may be a result of achieving overall mechanical isotropy, minimal surface curvature, and maximized surface area. We believe the methodology introduced here will be useful for understanding the mechanical behavior of natural crystalline cellular solids such as echinoderms' stereom and designing dual-scale lattice materials.

Abstract:Multibiological multiscale biomimetic design is a novel bionic idea that involves multi-mechanisms. Porous ceramics with a sea urchin stereom structure on a micrometre scale and a nacre mineral bridge structure on a submicron scale have been fabricated via organic foam impregnation and controlled crystallisation. The microstructure and mechanical properties of biomimetic ceramics are, respectively, characterised using scanning electron microscopy and universal testing machine. Moreover, the porosity, reliability and grain boundary stress of biomimetic ceramics are calculated via Archimedes method, Weibull theory and finite element method, respectively. Results show that the ceramic produced in this work has a porosity of 88.16% and an average pore size of 284.65 mu m. Mineral bridges of Al2TiO5 with a thickness of 30-230 mm are widely and randomly distributed in the grain boundary glass phase of Al2O3 and improved the compressive strength (2.32 MPa) and Weibull modulus (7.85) of ceramics by the multi-mechanisms of crack deflection, reducing maximum stress and homogenising stress on the grain boundary. These investigations would be of great value to the design and synthesis of novel biomimetic materials. (C) 2019 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Complex hierarchical architectures are ubiquitous in natural hard tissues, which comprise an elaborate assembly of hard and soft phases spanning from the nanoscale to the macroscale. The elegant architectures grant unique performance in terms of strength and toughness, but the biomimetic fabrication of synthetic materials with highly consistent structural and mechanical characteristics with natural counterparts remains a great challenge. Here, a centimeter‐size artificial lamellar bone is successfully fabricated for the first time via a well‐orchestrated “multiscale cascade regulation” strategy combining multiple techniques of molecular self‐assembly, electrospinning, and pressure‐driven fusion from molecular to macroscopic levels. The bulk artificial lamellar bone that is composed of hierarchically assembled mineralized collagen fibrils with a waiver of any synthetic polymer highly resembles the chemical composition, multiscale structural organization, and rotated plywood‐like structure of natural lamellae, thus achieving a good combination of lightweight and high‐stiffness (Ey ≈ 15.2 GPa), ‐strength (σf ≈ 118.4 MPa), and ‐toughness (KJC ≈ 9.3 MPa m1/2). This multiscale cascade regulation strategy can break through the limitations of a single technique and enable the construction of elaborate composite materials with multiscale step‐by‐step regulations of hierarchically structural organizations for unique mechanical properties.
Lessons from Nature for the Construction of Ceramic Cellular Materials for Superior Energy Absorption

Abstract:Sea urchin spines combine extreme lightweight construction with impact resistance and improved mechanical strength although being made of presumably brittle calcium carbonate (calcite). Lance and pencil sea urchins (Phyllacanthus imperialis and Heterocentrotus mammillatus) are of particular interest as they exhibit large and mechanical very stable spines and the constructional concepts of these spines was translated into graded porous alumina ceramics derived from starch‐blended slip casting. A high level of porosity (>30 vol%) is identified as the important element for graceful failure in polycrystalline alumina and graded porosity, i.e., layers of higher and lower density, can significantly improve the impact resistance of the material giving raise to what we refer to as cascading graceful failure: a mechanical response of porous materials with curved layers of graded porosity that maintains a high level of compressive strength even after the linear elastic threshold is surpassed and local structural collapse occurs. Spines of lance and pencil sea urchins are optimized to combine mechanical stability and lightweight construction. Layered porous ceramics mimicking the design and architecture of sea urchin spines show improved ability to absorb and dissipate compressive loads and impact energies. This can be realized by simply designing and tuning the pore distribution and 3D arrangement without changing the material or introducing a secondary phase. The 3D laminate structure of sea urchin spines and biomimetic ceramics is the reason for a cascading graceful failure behavior which remains a high level of the initial compressive strength.

Experimental Study of Cuttlebone As the Scaffold in Tissue-Engineering

Abstract:Purpose To observe the spatial structure of cuttlebone and to study the biocompatibility of cuttlebone used as scaffolds in tissue engineering. Methods The degreased cuttlebone was examined with light microscope and scanning electron microscope. The porosity rate was calculated. The cuttlebone and polyglycolic acid (PGA) were placed subcutaneously in the mice back. The inflammatory reaction and absorbing degree of cuttlebone were investigated at 1, 2, 4 and 8 weeks post-operation. The effect of cuttlebone on cell proliferation was examined by MTT assay. Results Morphological study showed regular network. The porosity rate was 92%. Only a few lymphocytes were infiltrated after 1 to 2 weeks. Cuttlebone was partially absorbed after 4 weeks and fully degraded after 8 weeks. Cell proliferated well on the cuttlebone scaffold. Conclusions Cuttlebone exhibits satisfactory biocompatibility and can be used as suitable three-dimensional porous scaffold.
Multi‐Level Bioinspired Microlattice with Broadband Sound‐Absorption Capabilities and Deformation‐Tolerant Compressive Response

Abstract:Through the biomimicry of the biological cuttlebone, the introduction of pores and an optimization of the heterogeneous features, herein, a microlattice with broadband sound‐absorption and deformation tolerant design is presented. The microlattice displays a high averaged absorption coefficient of 0.735, at a low thickness of 21 mm, and a 30% increase in energy absorption as compared to its uniform counterpart. Owing to the omnipresent noise and crash hazards, multifunctional sound‐absorbing, and deformation‐tolerant materials are highly sought‐after for practical engineering design. However, challenges lie with designing such a material. Herein, leveraging the inherent mechanical robustness of the biological cuttlebone, by introducing dissipative pores, a high‐strength microlattice is presented which is also sound‐absorbing. Its absorption bandwidth and deformation tolerance are further enhanced by introducing another level of bioinspiration, based on geometrical heterogeneities amongst the building cells. A high‐fidelity microstructure‐based model is developed to predict and optimize properties. Across a broad range of frequencies from 1000 to 6300 Hz, at a low thickness of 21 mm, the optimized microlattice displays a high experimentally measured average absorption coefficient of 0.735 with 68% of the points higher than 0.7. The absorption mechanism attributes to the resonating air frictional loss whilst its broadband characteristics attribute to the multiple resonance modes working in tandem. The heterogeneous architecture also enables the microlattice to deform with a deformation‐tolerant plateau behavior not observed in its uniform counterpart, which thereby leads to a 30% improvement in the specific energy absorption. Overall, this work presents an effective approach to the design of sound and energy‐absorbing materials by modifying state‐of‐the‐art bioinspired structures.

Abstract:Natural materials show astonishing mechanical properties, despite their rather poor building blocks. This counterintuitive behavior can be traced back to their hierarchical organization that enhances the properties of the building blocks. A classic example is bone: lightweight, stiff, strong, yet tough. This property combination is attributed particularly to the microstructure, where osteons deflect and arrest cracks. In this work, we mimic the bone microstructure with fiber-reinforced composites: we perform a numerical parametric study, by varying the layup of the osteon-like structures (OLS) and interconnecting layers representing the interstitial bone lamellae, and we manufacture and test single OLS as proof of concept. Results show the key role of OLS and interconnecting layers in deflecting and arresting cracks, whereas the combination of diverse materials affects the elastic properties. Finally, the introduction of hollow OLS, not affecting fracture toughness, might be used to expand the material functionality, paving the way toward novel multifunctional composites.

Abstract:Ideal bone scaffolds require good biocompatibility and moderate mechanical properties, so as to promote the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblast cells, and achieve the good bone repair. Inspired by the porous structure of cancellous bone, 15 groups of bone scaffolds with variable irregularity (Ir1-5) and porosity (35.53-61.75%) were designed and fabricated by ceramic digital light processing (DLP) using 20 wt.% hydroxyapatite doped zirconia as the matrix material. The effects of structural parameters and material on mechanical properties and biocompatibility were studied. The shrinkage test results showed that the density of scaffolds was mainly affected by the porosity. The mechanical test results showed that Ir2 and Ir3 scaffolds had better compressive behaviors, and the compressive strength could be increased by 30% by regulating the irregularity. All scaffolds showed comparable mechanical properties to that of cancellous bone. Cell experiments showed that the effect of structure on cell proliferation, differentiation, and mineralization was most evident at the early stage of implantation. Meanwhile, the biocompatibility variation with the irregularity was consistent with mechanical properties. This study proved that a bio-inspired bone scaffold with excellent comprehensive properties could be obtained through reasonable design.

Abstract:Lightweight structural materials with a unique combination of high stiffness, strength, toughness, and hardness, are highly desired yet challenging to be artificially fabricated. Biological structural materials, on the other hand, ingeniously integrate multiple mutually exclusive mechanical properties together relying on their hierarchically heterogeneous structures bonded with gradient interfaces. Here, a scalable bottom-up approach combining continuous nanofiber-assisted evaporation-induced self-assembly with laminating, pressure-less sintering and resin infiltration is reported to fabricate bioinspired heterogeneous ceramic-resin composites with locally tunable microstructure to fulfill specific properties. A gradient interlayer is introduced to provide a gradual transition between adjacent heterogeneous layers, effectively alleviating their property mismatch. The optimized heterogeneous nacre-like composite, as a demonstration, exhibits an attractive combination of low density (approximate to 2.8 g cm(-3)), high strength (approximate to 292 MPa), toughness (approximate to 6.4 MPa m(1/2)), surface hardness (approximate to 1144 kgf mm(-2)) and impact-resistance, surpassing the overall performance of engineering alumina. This material-independent approach paves the way for designing advanced bioinspired heterogeneous materials for diverse structural and functional applications.
Investigation on the Effect of the Multilayered Porous Structure of Sea Urchin Skeleton on Its Mechanical Behavior

Abstract:In this paper, the effect of stereom structure on the mechanical behavior of the Sea Urchin Inorganic Skeleton (SUIS) has been studied. The stereom microstructure of both Anthocidaris crassispina and Tripnenstes gratilla was characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Results indicate that a three-layer porous structure consisting of a growth, a support, and a resorption (GSR) layer is a common denominator for both species. The effect of GSR layer order on the mechanical behavior of the SUIS was studied by a finite element method. The results show that the GSR model could effectively reduce the maximum tensile stress on its meridional sutures under unidirectional pressure, hydrostatic pressure, and self-weight situation. For a fabricated three-layered ceramic test strips with different layer orders, the mechanical properties have a completely opposite performance compared with the compressive properties of the calculated SUIS-like models. This indicates that the GSR structure can effectively improve the mechanical properties of the SUIS, but it cannot be applied to bionics without considering its synergistic effect with the macro-structure of the SUIS. Scalable Manufacturing of Mechanical Robust Bio‐Inspired Ceramic‐Resin Composites with Locally Tunable Heterogeneous Structures

Abstract:Light‐weight structural materials with a unique combination of high stiffness, strength, toughness, and hardness, are highly‐desired yet challenging to be artificially fabricated. Biological structural materials, on the other hand, ingeniously integrate multiple mutually exclusive mechanical properties together relying on their hierarchically heterogeneous structures bonded with gradient interfaces. Here, we report a scalable bottom‐up approach combining continuous nanofiber‐assisted evaporation‐induced self‐assembly with laminating, pressure‐less sintering and resin infiltration to fabricate bio‐inspired heterogeneous ceramic‐resin composites with locally‐tunable microstructure to fulfill specific properties. A gradient interlayer was introduced to provide gradual transition between adjacent heterogeneous layers, effectively alleviating their property mismatch. The optimized heterogeneous nacre‐like composite, as a demonstration, exhibit an attractive combination of low density (∼2.8 g cm−3), high strength (∼292 MPa), toughness (∼6.4 MPa m1/2), surface hardness (∼1144 kgf mm−2) and impact‐resistance, surpassing the overall performance of engineering alumina. This material‐independent approach paves the way for designing advanced bio‐inspired heterogeneous materials for diverse structural and functional applications. Multiscale Structural Design and Fracture Control of High-Performance Biomimetic Materials

Abstract:Bioinspired architectural design for composites with much higher impact-resistance and fracture-resistance than that of individual constituent remains a major challenge for engineers and scientists. Inspired by the survival war between the mantis shrimps and abalones, we develop multiscale mechanical methods to design structures and control fractures in high-performance biomimetic materials. The first point is the optimization design of impact-resistant nacre-like materials [1-4]. By a combination of simulation, additive manufacturing, and drop tower testing we revealed that, at a critical interfacial strength or a critical prestress, the competition between intralayer cracks and interlayer delamination, or the synergistic effect between the prestress-enhanced tablets sliding and prestress-weakened structural integrality, result in optimized impact resistance of nacre-like structures. Furthermore, the interfacial strength design and the prestressing strategy were easily implemented to a designed nacre-inspired separator to enhance the impact resistance of lithium batteries. Later, we designed a discontinuous fibrous Bouligand (DFB) architecture [5], whose fracture-energy dissipations are insensitive to initial crack-orientations and show optimized values at critical pitch angles. Fracture mechanics analyses demonstrate that the hybrid toughening mechanisms of crack twisting and crack bridging mode arising from DFB architecture enable excellent fracture-resistance with crack-orientation insensitivity. The compromise in competition of energy dissipations between crack twisting and crack bridging is identified as the origin of maximum fracture energy at a critical pitch angle. We further illustrate that the optimized fracture energy can be achieved by tuning fracture energy of crack bridging, pitch angles, fiber lengths and twist angles distribution in DFB composites. Our findings shed light on how nature have evolved materials to exceptional impact resistance and fracture toughness, and provide the generic design strategies for bioinspired formidable impactresistant and fracture-resistant materials.
