Abstract:Sea level rise and extreme weather conditions caused by climatic changes enhance the frequency and length of submersion events in coastal soils, causing deposited airborne dusts to get in contact with marine salts. The behaviour of Cd, Zn and Pb from pedogenetic minerals and from dusts from mining and smelting activities, added to two soils under different agricultural management (arable and grassland) was examined after soil flooding for 1, 7 and 30 days with waters of increasing salinities (0, 4.37, 8.75, 17.25 and 34.5 g L −1 ). A rain water event following 1 d flooding released an extra amount of metals. Concentration of potentially toxic elements (PTE), pH, dissolved inorganic and organic C were measured in solutions collected by gravity from soil columns. Speciation distribution of leached metals and oversaturation parameters were calculated by Visual Minteq 3.0 and showed that complexation by chloride ions for Cd and fulvic acids for Pb were the drivers of solubilisation, while Zn interacted with both. Results showed that marine salts enhance up to 300 times leaching of Cd, and several times that of Zn and Pb from contaminated soils and that airborne toxic elements are much more mobilized than pedogenic ones. Smelter exhaust metals, particularly Pb, were made more mobile than those in mine tailings (up to 55 against 0.7 ng μg-1 Pb). Soil management strongly also influence mobilization by saline water: much lower amounts were leached from the grassland soil. Soil organic matter quality (DOC and humification) affects the extent of mobilization. The length of the flooding period did not result in coherent time trend patterns for the three metals, probably because of the multiple changes in solution parameters, but leached metals were always highly linearly correlated negatively with pH and positively with DOC.

Potential Release of Zinc and Cadmium From Mine-Affected Soils Under Flooding, a Mesocosm Study

Abstract:Metal-contaminated mining soils pose serious environmental and health risks if not properly managed, especially in mountainous areas, which are more susceptible to perturbation. Currently, climate change is leading to more frequent and intense rain events, which cause flooding episodes, thereby altering soil redox equilibria and contaminants stability. We evaluated the potential release of Zn and Cd (two of the most common inorganic contaminants) and the factors regulating their solubility and speciation in two heavily contaminated soils representative of a Zn-mining area. The soils were flooded under aerobic (for 24 h) and anaerobic (for 62 days) conditions using mesocosm experiments, sequential extractions, and geochemical modelling. Leaching trials under aerobic conditions showed a high release of Zn and Cd (10 times the legislative limits), with metals possibly migrating via water infiltration or runoff. Under anaerobic conditions Zn and Cd were initially released. Then, solution concentrations decreased gradually (Zn) or sharply (Cd) until the end of the experiment. Sequential extractions and multisurface modelling indicated that both metals precipitated mainly as carbonates. This was confirmed by a geochemical multisurface modelling, which also predicted the formation of sulphides after 60 days in one soil. The model calculated metals to be preferentially complexed by organic matter and well predicted the observed soil solution concentrations. The results showed that during flooding episodes contaminants could be promptly transferred to other environmental compartments. The use of multisurface modelling coupled with laboratory experiments provided useful indications on the potential release and speciation in case of anoxic conditions.
Seawater–groundwater interaction governs trace metal zonation in a coastal sandy aquifer

Abstract:Trace metals in the groundwater of coastal sandy aquifers significantly influence the coastal ecosystem, yet the spatiotemporal controls of these metals remain unclear. In this paper, we comprehensively revealed the distribution patterns, key controlling factors, potential ecological risks, and fluxes to the ocean of groundwater trace metals (As, Ba, Cr, Cd, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn) in a coastal deep sandy aquifer. The results showed a clear zonation of trace metals in the groundwater in relation to the mixing extent between seawater and terrestrial freshwater. The freshwater zone exhibited a relatively low concentration of trace metals, whereas the freshwater‐seawater transition zone showed a substantial quantity of dissolved Fe, Mn, As, and Ba. Seawater‐groundwater interactions significantly affected the Fe, Mn, As, and Ba concentrations through redox potential and pH gradients. The tide‐driven saline water zone was vulnerable to oceanic environments and anthropogenic activities, resulting in the enrichment of trace metals such as Zn and Cd. Driven by recirculated submarine groundwater discharge (SGD), the concentrations of trace metals in the density‐driven saline circulation zone were found to be higher than those in the surrounding areas. The ecological risk index suggested that the freshwater‐seawater transition zone posted the highest ecological risks. Trace metal fluxes (i.e., Fe, Mn, and As) via SGD significantly contributed to the total input into the sea, which may have potential impacts on the coastal environments. Abstract:Plasma glucose, C-peptide, and insulin responses to intravenous glucose (intravenous glucose tolerance test [IVGTT], 0.5 g/kg), glucagon (1 mg i.v.), and oral glucose (oral glucose tolerance test [OGTT], 1 g/kg) were assessed in six normal beagles before, during, and 1 and 4 mo after the administration of cyclosporin A (CsA) in doses previously shown to be required for uniform prevention of canine islet-allograft rejection (20 mg/kg; mean trough radioimmunoassay serum levels ≥500 ng/ml). Insulin secretion in response to intravenous glucose and glucagon was significantly inhibited during the administration of CsA (areas under insulin-response curves, pmol min−1 L−1; IVGTT, pre-CsA, 11,127 ± 1285; during CsA, 5954 ± 1147, P < .05; glucagon tolerance test, pre-CsA, 18,617 ± 2807; during CsA, 4401 ± 486, P < .05 vs. pretreatment levels). These secretory defects persisted 4 mo after CsA was discontinued (IVGTT, 4358 ± 659; glucagon tolerance test, 10,567 ± 2479, P < .05). C-peptide responses paralleled these changes. Plasma glucose disposal in response to these secretagogues, however, returned to normal 1 mo after discontinuation of CsA. In contrast to the findings for IVGTT and glucagon, insulin-response curves to OGTT were not statistically different during CsA administration. We conclude that, although glucose disappearance rates are normal after discontinuation of the CsA administration, CsA causes irreversible impairment in islet secretory responses detectable with IVGTT and glucagon but not with OGTT. These results suggest that short-term CsA in doses required to prevent islet-allograft rejection in dogs can result in permanent loss of functionally competent β-cells.
Release of phosphorus and metal(loid)s from manured soils to floodwater during a laboratory simulation of snowmelt flooding

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) and metal accumulation in manured agricultural soils and subsequent losses to waterways have been extensively studied; however, the magnitudes and the factors governing their losses during spring snowmelt flooding are less known. We examined the P and metal release from long‐term manured soil to floodwater under simulated snowmelt flooding with recent manure additions. Intact soil columns collected from field plots located in Randolph, Southern Manitoba, 2 weeks after liquid swine manure treatments (surface‐applied, injected, or control with no recent manure addition) were flooded and incubated for 8 weeks at 4 ± 1°C to simulate snowmelt conditions. Floodwater (syringe filtered through 0.45 μm) and soil porewater (extracted using Rhizon‐Mom samplers) samples were periodically extracted and analyzed for dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP), pH, zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), and arsenic (As). Mean floodwater DRP concentrations (mg L−1) for manure injected (2.0 ± 0.26), surface‐applied (2.6 ± 0.26), and control (2.2 ± 0.26) treatments did not differ significantly. Despite manure application, DRP loss to floodwater did not significantly increase compared to the control, possibly due to the elevated residual soil P at this site from the long‐term manure use. At the end of simulated flooding, the DRP concentrations increased by 1.5‐fold and 5‐fold in porewater and floodwater, respectively. Metal(loid) concentrations were not affected by manure treatments in general, except for Zn and Mg on certain days. Unlike DRP, where porewater and floodwater concentrations increased with time, metalloid concentration in porewater and floodwater did not show consistent trends with flooding time.

Abstract:Water pollution is a significant issue resulting from past long-term actions. The remediation projects carried out under law constraints for industrial plants, which have been the major contributors to environmental and water pollution, are currently providing a significant amount of data about contaminated soil, surface waters, and groundwater. Most of such plants worldwide are in coastal zones. Based on a significant amount of chemical and environmental data for a coastal contaminated site subject to variable groundwater salinization, this study aimed to understand the mobility of some trace elements because of coastal zone dynamics. Data concerned 688 groundwater samples, including As, Hg, Cd, Crtot, Cu, Ni, Pb, V, Se, Zn, pH, electrical conductivity, chlorides, total organic carbon and organic contaminants as quantitative variables, enhanced by additional qualitative variables such as groundwater salinity, season, water level, precipitation, and industrial activity type to make the dataset as representative as possible of the site under investigation. The study used robust multivariate statistical analyses to analyse the complex dataset and explain the relevant factors influencing contaminant behaviour under different environmental conditions. The Multivariate Statistical Analysis distinguished three clusters of trace elements with diverse reactivity to changes in groundwater salinization. The first includes Se, Cu, Crtot, V, and Ni, showing the highest correlation with electrical conductivity and chlorides because of their high affinity to form chloride or organic chloride complexes and for ion competition. Zn and Pb cluster in the second group: they are less reactive to groundwater salinization and more influenced by cation and anion competition and organic matter. The mobility of Hg and As (third cluster) significantly correlates with Fe and Mn, underlining the dominant role of reductive dissolution of trace elements-bearing minerals (Fe/Mn/Al-oxy-hydroxides) and metal-organic complexes. The correlation between the clustering of variables in groundwater and soils shows the influence of sediment structure, mineral composition, and physical and chemical soil conditions on the distribution in soils of trace elements and their transport to groundwater. The study proposes a valuable approach for assessing the effects of salinization in contaminated coastal aquifers. It supports planning multi-purpose characterization and monitoring campaigns of contaminated coastal sites and provides guidance on the correct associated remediation projects.

Abstract:The presence of toxic heavy metals in sediments beyond allowable limits are often posing a serious threat to local environment. Constructed wetland sediments contamined with heavy metals can affect sediment-dewlling biota such as benthic organisms, wetland plants, aquatic life including amphibian and reptiles. The objective of this study was to investigate heavy metals, mobility and bioavailability, level of environmental risks, and it implication for environmental safety. The study was conducted using the horizontal subsurface flow (HSSF) constructed wetland (CW) sediments designed for treating polluted Little Akaki River water. The sediment samples were collected from the CW and heavy metals speciation determined following the European Community Bureau References (BCR) sequential extraction procedures. The results showed that the highest percentage of metal fractions: Zn = 71.67%, Cr =82.20%, Cd = 76.47% and Pb = 74.96% were bound to residual fraction(R), implying that majority of the metals were stable, immobile and not bioavailable. The mobility factor (MF) for Zn (27.60%); Cr (14.24%) Cd (18.82% and Pb (21.53%); indicating low percentage of metals found in mobile chemical form. Furthermore, the environmental risk assessment code (RAC %) value for all heavy metals in the sediment samples were ranged: 5.37 % - 8.51%, falling in low risk category (RAC=1-10%). Low mobility, bioavailability and risk assessment code may be attributed to slight alkaline pH, low organic matter, and caly dominated sediment particles. High residual fraction occurred due to clay particles which can form strong bounding matrix with metals. Thus, metals in the CW sediments may pose low toxicity to wetland plants and sediment living biota surrounding environment.

Abstract:Intense industrialization has led to the increasing leaching risk of metals into groundwater at heavily polluted industrial sites. However, metal dissolution in polluted industrial soils has been neither fully investigated nor quantified before. In this study, the dissolution of Zn, Ni, and Cu in soil from a heavily contaminated industrial site during a flooding-drainage period was investigated by sequential extraction, geochemical modelling, and X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy. The results showed a steady decrease in metal solubility during both reduction and oxidation stages. During reduction, with limited decrease in Eh (>100 mV), formation of carbonate precipitates rather than sulfide precipitates and adsorption on soil solids was responsible for Zn and Ni dissolution, whereas bound to soil organic matter (SOM) and iron oxides dominated Cu dissolution, due to its lower concentration and higher affinity to SOM and iron oxides compared to Zn and Ni. During oxidation, the acidity caused by ferrous oxidation was buffered by calcite dissolution, while metal precipitation ceased and adsorption on soil surface controlled metal solubility. The metal solubility and speciation during the flooding-drainage process were quantitatively predicted by geochemical model. The findings demonstrate that due to high metal concentrations and weak microbial effect in the industrial soil, metal release was largely regulated by abiotic reactions rather than biotic reactions, which is somehow different from that of the wetland or rice field soils.
Saltwater intrusion affects nitrogen, phosphorus and iron transformations under oxic and anoxic conditions: an incubation experiment

Abstract:Low-lying coastal ecosystems are rapidly salinizing due to sea level rise and associated saltwater intrusion (SWI). In agricultural soils, SWI can alter biogeochemical cycling of key nutrients such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and iron (Fe). The main objective of this study was to quantify the amount of nitrate–N (NO3–N), ammonium–N (NH4–N), soluble reactive P (SRP), and total dissolved iron (TDFe) released from agricultural soils undergoing SWI to determine their potential loss to downstream waterways. Agricultural soils were incubated for 0, 15, and 30 days (under oxic and anoxic conditions) with various salt solution combinations of sodium chloride (NaCl), sodium sulfate (Na2SO4), calcium sulfate (CaSO4), and Instant Ocean® to mimic (1) different ionic constituents of saltwater at different ionic strengths and (2) the presence or absence of gypsum, a soil amendment, through the addition of CaSO4. We also included a set of incubations treated with deionized water as a no ionic strength control (0.00 M). To increase statistical power, we grouped individual salt treatments based on our initial hypotheses at the end of the incubation period (day 30) to determine the effects of high (0.26–0.28 M) and low (0.03–0.04 M) ionic strength on inorganic N release and combinations of Ca and SO42− additions on SRP release to microcosm soil solution. Calcium additions decreased SRP release relative to saltwater that contained only NaCl additions under oxic and anoxic conditions. Additionally, high ionic strength treatments, which were about 7 times the ionic strength of low ionic strength treatments, released two times as much NH4–N to the soil solution, which suggests a non-linear relationship between ionic strength and NH4–N release. At day 30, anoxic microcosm soils treated with Instant Ocean® to simulate 15 parts per thousand seawater (ionic strength 0.26 M) released significantly more NH4–N (by 782 times), SRP (by 6 times), and TDFe (by 197 times) to the soil solution than oxic microcosm soils (P < 0.05). This treatment was designed to reflect a field inundated by brackish seawater for almost a month, which is representative of conditions on farm fields undergoing SWI. Under these anoxic conditions, as much as 22% of bioavailable soil P (as SRP) and 45% of total inorganic N (as NH4–N) could be released to overlying water when inundated with saltwater. Our work indicates that the influx of salts and inundation of SWI-affected farm fields could lead to a large export of N and P from agricultural soils and potentially affect downstream water quality.

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: If blood flow in the ICA is reduced by the use of a distal filter during CAS, flow stagnation proximal to the filter occurs and this increases the probability of floating debris. The floating debris that remains after filter retrieval may cause cerebral embolism. However, if blood flow is increased by aspiration of blood from the ICA through an aspiration catheter, debris could be removed while the filter is still in place. The purpose of this study was to investigate blood flow changes in the ICA induced by filter use and aspiration. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A filter-protection device (AngioGuard XP) was used during CAS in 13 consecutive patients with carotid stenosis. Blood flow velocity in the ICA was measured by carotid Doppler sonography during filter deployment, filter retrieval, and catheter aspiration. RESULTS: Blood flow velocity significantly decreased with filter placement and significantly increased with filter retrieval in patients with normal angiographic flow (P < .05). Aspiration of a 20-mL blood sample from the proximal ICA column significantly increased the blood flow velocity (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: The blood flow changes in the ICA induced by the use of a distal filter may cause cerebral embolism in filter-protected CAS. A routine aspiration method can potentially reduce the amount of migrating debris during CAS, even in cases with angiographic normal flow.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) losses from flooded soils and subsequent transport to waterways contribute to eutrophication of surface waters. This study evaluated the effectiveness of MnO2 and a zeolite Y amendment in reducing P release from flooded soils and explored the underlying mechanisms controlling P release. Unamended and amended (MnO2 or zeolite, surface-amended at 5 Mg ha-1) soil monoliths from four clayey-alkaline soils were flooded at 22 ± 2 °C for 56 days. Soil redox potential and dissolved reactive P (DRP), pH, and concentrations of major cations and anions in porewater and floodwater were analyzed periodically. Soil P speciation was simulated using Visual MINTEQ at 1, 28, and 56 days after flooding (DAF) and P K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy and sequential fractionation at 56 DAF. Porewater DRP increased with DAF and correlated negatively with pe+pH and positively with dissolved Fe. Reductive dissolution of Fe-associated P was the dominant mechanism of flooding-induced P release. The MnO2 amendment reduced porewater DRP by 30%-50% by favoring calcium phosphates (Ca-P) precipitation and delaying the reductive dissolution reactions. In three soils, the zeolite amendment at some DAF increased porewater and/or floodwater DRP through dissolution of Ca-P and thus was not effective in reducing P release from flooded soils.
Unveiling the impact of flooding and salinity on iron oxides-mediated binding of organic carbon in the rhizosphere of Scirpus mariqueter

Abstract:The abundant Fe (hydr-) oxides present in wetland sediments can form stable iron (Fe)-organic carbon (OC) complexes (Fe-OC), which are key mechanisms contributing to the stability of sedimentary OC stocks in coastal wetland ecosystems. However, the effects of increased flooding and salinity stress, resulting from global change, on the Fe-OC complexes in sediments remain unclear. In this study, we conducted controlled experiments in a climate chamber to quantify the impacts of flooding and salinity on the different forms of Fe (hydr-) oxides binding to OC in the rhizosphere sediments of S. mariqueter as well as the influence on Fe redox cycling bacteria in the rhizosphere. The results of this study demonstrated that prolonged flooding and high salinity treatments significantly reduced the content of organo-metal complexes (FePP) in the rhizosphere. Under high salinity conditions, the content of FePP-OC increased significantly, while flooding led to a decrease in FePP-OC content, inhibiting co-precipitation processes. The association of amorphous Fe (hydr-) oxides (FeHH) with OC showed no significant differences under different flooding and salinity treatments. Prolonged flooding significantly increased the relative abundance of Fe-reducing bacteria (FeRB) Deferrisoma and Geothermobacter and decreased polyphenol oxidase in the rhizosphere, while the relative abundance of Fe-oxidizing bacteria (FeOB) Paracoccus and Pseudomonas decreased with increasing salinity and duration of flooding. Overall, short-term water and salinity stress promoted the binding of FeDH to OC in the rhizosphere of S. mariqueter, leading to a reduction in the OC content held by FePP. However, there were no significant differences observed in the OC stocks or the total Fe-OC content in the rhizosphere sediments. The findings suggest a degree of consistency in the Fe-OC of the "plant-soil" complex system within tidal flat wetlands, showing resilience to abrupt shifts in flooding and salinity over short periods.
The influence of soluble organic matter from municipal solid waste compost on trace metal leaching in calcareous soils

Abstract:The use of municipal solid waste (MSW) compost as fertilizer may cause increased leaching due to its high content of trace metals and thus pose a threat to groundwater quality. The effect of MSW compost application on trace metal leaching in calcareous soils has been studied in soil column experiments under laboratory conditions using three soils from the study area in the Gaza Strip and Israel. Higher levels of organic matter in solution (TOMS), nitrate, and the trace metals Cu, Ni and Zn were found in the leachates of a sandy soil and, to a lesser extent, a loamy soil, to which MSW compost had been applied at a rate of 65 Mg ha(-1) (dry weight basis). Nevertheless, the majority of water-soluble trace metal species from compost accumulated in the topsoil rather than washing out, with the exception of aqueous Ni species. Ni concentrations exceeded the maximum allowable limits for drinking water (in Germany: 50 microg l(-1)) at peak times in the leachates from sandy soil, while all other trace metals remained far below the corresponding limits. The highest absolute concentrations of trace metals were found for the leaching of Cu from compost-amended sandy soil (100 microg l(-1)). For Cd, Pb and Hg no evidence of downward movement was found in any assay. Gel filtration studies of the collected soil leachates showed that all trace metals encountered in the leachates existed mostly as organic complexes. In sandy soil most of the water-soluble organic matter added with the compost had leached from the rootzone after a year's equivalent of rainfall, while TOMS mobility was greatly reduced in the loamy soil. The makeup of the TOMS in the sandy soil and its metal-binding capacity was strongly influenced by compost-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) as observed by FTIR spectrometry. Hence the vertical displacement of trace metals (Cu, Ni, Zn) in these calcareous soils seemed to result primarily from the presence of mobile metal-organic complexes in the soil solution after compost addition. Further studies are required to validate these findings in the field, especially to assess the risk of Cu and Ni leaching in sandy soil.

Metal Content and Enrichment in Bivalves Within the Drainage Area of Seawater Used for a Desulfurization Process in Zhanjiang Bay, China

Abstract:As heavy metals are easy to accumulate and have strong biological toxicity, they pose a potential threat to human health by entering the human body through the cumulative effect of marine life. Land-based input is an important source of heavy metals in the ocean, which has a great influence on coastal water quality. In this study, the spatial distribution characteristics of heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Cd, Pb, Cr, As) in the coastal waters of the desulfurization process outlet of a power plant in Zhanjiang Bay were investigated, and the enrichment behavior of heavy metals by organisms (oysters and barnacles) were also studied. The results showed that, before the seawater desulfurization system was closed, there were high concentrations of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb and Cr) in the surface seawater near the drainage outlet. The concentrations of these heavy metals in the surface seawater were higher than those in the bottom seawater within 100 m of the drainage outlet. After the seawater desulfurization system was closed, the average concentrations of Cu, Cr and As in seawater at each station decreased by 17.04%, 37.52% and 29.53%, respectively, while the average concentrations of Zn, Cd and Pb increased by 17.05%, 32.87% and 48.77%, respectively. Single factor pollution index (SFI) and bio-concentration factor (BCF) showed that there was a potential high accumulation risk of Zn in oysters and barnacles near the drainage outlet of desulfurization wastewater (0.5 < SFI < 1 and BCF > 1000). The SFI and BCF of each metal in oysters and barnacles decreased with the increase in distance from the drainage outlet. Generally, the coastal water quality of desulfurization process drainage area in Zhanjiang Bay were below the class Ⅱof the “Seawater quality standard” (GB 3097-1997) of China. However, the heavy metals content in seawater and organisms near the drainage outlet is slightly higher. This suggested that if the seawater desulfurization process runs for a long time, it will have a negative impact on the coastal water and organisms.

Abstract:Soil salinization and heavy metal pollution in the Yellow River Delta region have elicited increasing concern. Therefore, revealing the underlying mechanism of the impact of soil salinity on potential toxic elements (PTEs) is crucial for environmental protection and the rational utilization of resources in this area. In this study, we employed CatBoost–SHAP and multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) models to comprehensively investigate the spatial effects of soil electrical conductivity (EC 1:5 ) on PTEs. Additionally, we employed a space–for–time substitution strategy with the aim of investigating how increasing soil salinity, represented by EC 1:5 , K + , Na + , Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ , affects the bioavailability of PTEs over time. The primary findings are as follows: (1) for most PTEs, the influence of soil EC 1:5 on the bioavailable forms of these elements surpassed its impact on their total concentrations. (2) The results of the MGWR model indicated that exchangeable Ca (aCa) in the soils of the eastern coastal areas markedly increased the bioavailable Cd (aCd), bioavailable Cu (aCu), and bioavailable Zn (aZn). (3) When the soil EC 1:5 ranges between 2 and 6 dS/m, exchangeable Na (aNa) primarily competed for the adsorption sites of bioavailable Pb (aPb). However, as the soil EC 1:5 increases to 6–10 dS/m, exchangeable Mg (aMg) and aCa became the primary competing ions, with aMg playing a more significant role than aCa. These findings provide valuable theoretical insights and practical guidance for saline-alkali soil improvement and PTEs pollution control in the Yellow River Delta region, thereby providing a foundation for sustainable environmental management and resource utilization.

Abstract:Flooding, carrying sediments, inundates farmlands across the world due to extreme adverse weather conditions. The casualties and property damage associated with flooding are important direct impacts. However, there is currently insufficient understanding of the remobilization and distribution of heavy metals (HMs) caused by flooding. Few studies have specifically considered flooding as a pathway for HMs contamination of soil. Herein, a novel methodological framework for revealing the input pathways of HMs in agricultural soils in mining-intensive areas is proposed and applied. Flooding is considered one of the pathways for HMs inputs during source apportionment. The results demonstrated a high degree of overlap between the distribution characteristics of major HMs in agricultural soils and sediments. The degree of soil Cd pollution was significantly positively correlated with the inundation depth in the flooded area. It took 8.4-11.5 times of flood inundation or 98.5-119.9 years of accumulation of atmospheric deposition to reach HMs contamination levels in the soil of the study area. Flooding brought in most of the soil Cd, while atmospheric deposition was the primary input pathway for soil Pb and Zn. Our results identified the role of flood inundation on the input of HMs in mining-intensive areas. These results demonstrated the value of our framework for studying the impact of flooding on HMs in agricultural soils from the perspective of input pathways, providing new insights not only into identifying the sources of soil HMs but also into enhancing understanding of the impact of flooding on soil environments. With the potential increase in the frequency and intensity of flooding inundating farmlands in the future, it is essential to consider flooding as a pathway for HMs inputs in order to comprehensively assess their environmental impact.

Abstract:Co-transport of colloidal substances and pollutants is a pivotal link that significantly affects the environment of coastal groundwater. The effect of colloid mobilization and aquifer pore structure change on heavy metal transport driven by seawater-freshwater interface dynamics is not fully understood. In this study, packed column experiments were conducted to model the seawater intrusion (SWI) and freshwater replenishment (FWR) processes using a sampled medium from a coastal sandy aquifer. Hydrodynamic, hydrochemical variables, and heavy metal (Pb, Cu, Cd) transport during the propagation of the seawater-freshwater interface were tested and analyzed. During the SWI stage, cation exchange induced heavy metal liberations, and it developed peak concentrations synchronized with the seawater-freshwater interface at the pore volume of 1.00. The colloid-facilitated transport for heavy metals was the predominant mechanism in the FWR stage, characterized by a peak release lagging the interface propagation by approximately 0.5 pore volumes. Because the colloidal fraction was mobilized during aquifer desalination, it lagged behind the decline of the salinity gradient. Furthermore, Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) calculations explained that the replenishment decreased the depth of the secondary energy minimum of the colloids; meanwhile, the thickness of the electrical double layer increased from 0.63 nm to 10.14 nm, resulting in a repulsive energy barrier up to 3,213 kT. The transport of colloids led to a reduction in porosity from 18.16% to 2.28% of the total immobile domain. At these times, the dimension of the transported colloids evolved, showing a size-selective transport and therefore regulating the total emission fluxes of the heavy metals. These mechanisms were proposed to be incorporated in colloid filtration theory for targeting the coastal scenario.

Abstract:AbstractContinuous flooding has been widely used in paddy field to decrease the accumulation of heavy metal(loid)s by rice due to their decreased solubility and bioavailability of most heavy metal(loid)s under water flooding condition. A field experiment with six drainage treatments during grain-filling stage was performed to investigate the influence of different water flooding conditions on availability of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), and mercury (Hg) and their accumulation by rice in alkaline paddy soil. The results showed at the end of experiment, the availability of Cd and Pb in soil with continuous flooding for above 25 days after full heading significantly decreased compared with draining immediately after full heading of rice. But some increase of the As availability in soil with different water regimes was observed at 15 days after beginning of experiment where the As availability was below its detection limit. Meanwhile, the concentrations of Cd and Cr both in rice grains and straws were decreased evidently with prolonged flooding at rice filling stage. The concentrations of Pb and Hg in grain were all below the detection limit, but increased in straw with draining 15 days later compared with draining immediately after full heading of rice. However, water regimes during grain-filling stage had little effect on As uptake by rice in alkaline paddy soil. Moreover, this study also discovered that organic matter may played a critical role in controlling availability of heavy metal(loid)s in alkaline soil. This work demonstrated that at alkaline paddy soil, maintaining water flooding until 5 days before harvest in rice grain-filling stage was an effective method to improve rice safety without decreasing yields in paddy field polluted with Cd, Cr, and As, but careful consideration is required for Pb and Hg.

Abstract:Groundwater is an essential source for drinking water production. Nitrate infiltration into groundwater due to over-fertilization can cause a potential risk for groundwater quality. Pyrite and other geogenic minerals can be oxidized and trace metals consequently released into water, e.g., nickel and uranium. To achieve a better understanding of the nitrate-induced mobilization of metals, this study investigated the release of antimony, arsenic, chromium, cobalt, molybdenum, uranium, and vanadium from three different reduced sediments after nitrate addition. The experiments were conducted as batch and soil column tests under oxygen-free conditions. In addition to the ORP, the pH value was a relevant driver for the metal mobilization due to pH dependent adsorption and ion exchange processes. Uranium concentrations in the water increased with increasing redox potential. Also, antimony and, to a lesser extent, molybdenum showed higher mobilization at higher ORP as well as at higher pH values. On the contrary, arsenic and cobalt was immobilized with increasing redox potential. Pourbaix diagrams demonstrated very complex species distributions even in synthetic water. The mobilization of trace metals is expected to be also influenced by the type of surrounding rocks and water quality parameters such as dissolved organic carbon.
