Abstract:The heavy metal inventory and the ecological risk of the tidal flat sediments in Haizhou Bay were investigated. Results show that the average concentrations of heavy metals in the surface sediments exceeded the environment background values of Jiangsu Province coastal soil, suggesting that the surface sediments were mainly polluted by heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn). In addition, the profiles of heavy metals fluxes can reflect the socio-economic development of Lianyungang City, and heavy metals inputs were attributed to anthropogenic activities. Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn were mainly present in the non-bioavailable residual form in surface sediments, whereas Cd and Mn were predominantly in the highly mobile acid soluble and reducible fractions. The ecological risk of the polluted sediments stemmed mainly from Cd and Pb. According to the Sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), however, the adverse biological effects caused by the heavy metals occasionally occurred in tidal flat.

Abstract:This work is the first systematic quantitative analysis of the heavy metal situation along the Zhejiang coastal region focusing on the integrative assessment of the concentrations of seven heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Hg, Zn, Pb, Cr, and As) in surface sediments during the 2012-2015 period. Different heavy metal contamination indices were used for surface sediment quality assessment purposes. The numerical results revealed a noticeable spatial fluctuation of the degree of contamination throughout the region during the four years considered. Higher contamination levels and ecological risks were detected in the southern part of the Zhejiang coastal region. It was found that the Cu, Cd and Hg were the predominant contaminants along the Zhejiang coast with mean regional concentrations varying between 29.1 and 34.2, 0.12-017, and 0.044-0.052 mg/kg, respectively. The Cr and Pb exhibited lower contamination levels than the other metals during each one of the years 2012-2015. Stochastic site indicators of heavy metal contamination were used to assess regional uncertainties and obtain useful physical interpretations of the state of contamination of the Zhejiang coast. These indicators can be expressed explicitly in terms of probabilities of heavy metal contamination (either at a global scale or spatially distributed over the coastal region), and therefore they can be considered as risk indicators. It was found that the fraction of the coastal region where excess contamination occurred could never exceed the ratio of the mean heavy metal contamination over the selected threshold. In half of the coast study region, the degree of heavy metal contamination was higher than the median spatial contamination values during the month of August of the years 2012-2015. The spatial means of excess contamination and excess differential contamination increased as the relative area of over-contamination increased. Within the substantially contaminated sub-region of the Zhejiang coast, stronger contamination correlations were observed between locations separated by shorter distances. These correlations were higher when smaller thresholds were considered. As regards the spatial connectivity of the corresponding contamination risks, it was found that 44%, 31%, 39% and 63% of the location pairs in the Zhejiang coast simultaneously experienced moderate risks during the years 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, respectively. The ratio of the probability of excess contamination at both locations separated by distances < 20 km over the probability of excess contamination at either one of these two locations was high even for large thresholds, indicating that locations with high contamination are concentrated rather than being dispersed along the Zhejiang coast. Lastly, another interesting finding is that the characterization of the Zhejiang coastal region as over-contaminated is very sensitive to the DC threshold considered, that is, a small increase in the threshold selected can reduce significantly the probability that region is characterized as over-contaminated.

Abstract:Sea level rise and extreme weather conditions caused by climatic changes enhance the frequency and length of submersion events in coastal soils, causing deposited airborne dusts to get in contact with marine salts. The behaviour of Cd, Zn and Pb from pedogenetic minerals and from dusts from mining and smelting activities, added to two soils under different agricultural management (arable and grassland) was examined after soil flooding for 1, 7 and 30 days with waters of increasing salinities (0, 4.37, 8.75, 17.25 and 34.5 g L −1 ). A rain water event following 1 d flooding released an extra amount of metals. Concentration of potentially toxic elements (PTE), pH, dissolved inorganic and organic C were measured in solutions collected by gravity from soil columns. Speciation distribution of leached metals and oversaturation parameters were calculated by Visual Minteq 3.0 and showed that complexation by chloride ions for Cd and fulvic acids for Pb were the drivers of solubilisation, while Zn interacted with both. Results showed that marine salts enhance up to 300 times leaching of Cd, and several times that of Zn and Pb from contaminated soils and that airborne toxic elements are much more mobilized than pedogenic ones. Smelter exhaust metals, particularly Pb, were made more mobile than those in mine tailings (up to 55 against 0.7 ng μg-1 Pb). Soil management strongly also influence mobilization by saline water: much lower amounts were leached from the grassland soil. Soil organic matter quality (DOC and humification) affects the extent of mobilization. The length of the flooding period did not result in coherent time trend patterns for the three metals, probably because of the multiple changes in solution parameters, but leached metals were always highly linearly correlated negatively with pH and positively with DOC.

Abstract:Human activities directly impact estuaries, where the biota is exposed to sediment contamination. A contamination assessment was carried out in several estuaries in the Southern Iberian Peninsula. Sediment samples were analyzed for the presence of metals/metalloids, and bioaccumulation tests were conducted with clams (Ruditapes philippinarum). Huelva Estuary had the highest contamination levels, while the inner bay of Cádiz and the outer stations of the estuaries from Guadiana, Guadalquivir, Palmones, and Guadarranque were the lesser contaminated. All sampling points (except Huelva) had low contamination levels of As and Cd, but they had high concentrations of Cu. The elements Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu, As, and Hg displayed correlations between the concentrations in sediments and the biota. High bioaccumulation of Zn, Cu, and As was observed in Huelva and Barbate. Important insights into the sediment contamination in Southern Iberian Peninsula estuaries suggest greater management and conservation efforts in these critical ecosystems.

Abstract:Dry riverbeds can transport mining waste during torrential rain events, disseminating pollutants from mining areas to natural ecosystems. This study evaluates the impact of these mine wastes on soils, sediments, and runoff/pore water in the La Carrasquilla dry riverbed (southeastern Spain). An integrated approach utilizing geochemical and mineralogical techniques was employed, analyzing water, soil, and sediment samples from both the headwater and mouth of the riverbed. Soil profiles and pore water were collected at 30 cm, 60 cm, and 90 cm deep, alongside sediment and runoff water samples. The assessment of metal(loid) contamination focused on arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, nickel, manganese, zinc, and lead, utilizing sequential extraction to evaluate metal partitioning across soil phases. Various pollution indices, including the contamination factor (Cf), pollution load index (PLI), potential ecological risk index (RI), and metal(loid) evaluation index (MEI), were employed to classify contamination levels. The highest level of contamination was reported in the headwater, which suggested anthropogenic activities linked to the presence of mining residues as the major source of metal(loid)s. However, an active deposition of As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn was reported in the topsoil at the mouth. In the headwater, a quartz and muscovite-rich zone exhibited the highest Cf for Pb (1022), primarily bound to the soil residual fraction (62.8%). At the headwater and mouth, pore water showed higher concentrations of sulfate, Ca, Na, Cl, Mg, and Mn and higher salinity than acceptable limits for drinking water or irrigation established by the World Health Organization. Runoff-water metal concentrations surpassed established guidelines, with MEI values indicating significant contamination by cadmium (36.1) and manganese (19.0). These findings highlight the considerable ecological risk of Pb and underscore the need for targeted remediation strategies to mitigate environmental impacts in the Mar Menor coastal lagoon.

Abstract:The Mar Menor lagoon combined high biological production and environmental quality, making it an important economic engine. However, the pressure of human activities put its ecological integrity at risk, the oldest environmental impact being mining activity recorded since Roman times, about 3500 years ago, reaching its maximum intensity in the 20th century, contributing heavy metals to the lagoon sediments for almost 30 centuries. This work reviews the spatiotemporal evolution of the main heavy metals in this coastal lagoon using data from 272 surface sediment samples obtained during the last 40 years and two deep cores covering the total history of the lagoon (c. 6500 yrs BP), so as their incidence in the lagoon trophic web. The observed patterns in sedimentation, sediment characteristics and heavy metal content respond to the complex interaction, sometimes synergistic and sometimes opposing, between climatic conditions, biological production and human activities, with mining being mainly responsible for Pb, Zn and Cd inputs and port activities for Cu. High Fe/Al, Ti/Al and Zr/Al ratios identify periods of mining activity, while periods of arid climatic conditions and deforestation that increase erosion processes in the drainage basin and silt concentration in the lagoon sediments are determined by high Zr/Rb and, to a lesser extent, Zr/Al and Si/Al ratios. After the cessation of direct discharges into the lagoon in the 1950s, the recent evolution of heavy metals concentration and its spatial redistribution would be determined by hydrographic and biogeochemical processes, solubility of different elements, and coastal works in harbours and on beaches. The bioconcentration factor decreases along the trophic levels of the food web, suggesting that the lagoon ecosystem provides an important service by retaining heavy metals in the sediment, largely preventing their bioavailability, but actions involving resuspension or changes in sediment conditions would pose a risk to organisms.
Temporal dynamics of contaminants in an estuarine system affected by acid mine drainage discharges

Abstract:The estuary of Huelva is constituted by the common mouth of the Odiel and Tinto rivers, which are extreme cases of acid mine drainage contamination due to the Iberian Pyrite Belt, the world's largest sulfide mineral province. The drained acidic waters are subjected to seawater mixing and thus, to dilution and precipitation processes that drive the load of contaminants entering the oceanic environment. This research reports the distribution of major metal(loid)s present in the highly acidic waters across the entire Tinto and Odiel estuarine systems as they are subjected to acid mine drainage neutralization, until reaching the ocean. The datasets presented are divided in low- and high-flow periods, corresponding to dry/warm and wet/cold seasons, respectively. Iron and Al were almost entirely removed from solution with pH increase at both periods due to their precipitation as schwertmannite and basaluminite, respectively. These mineral phases also, controlled the behavior of As, Cu and Pb, which were removed from solution, with >90 % of their concentration ending up in the particulate phase due to sorption processes. However, at pH >7, As returned entirely to the dissolved phase at both sampled seasons because of desorption, similarly to Cu at the low-flow period. On the other hand, concentrations of Zn, Cd, Mn, Co and Ni in solution decreased only by dilution with seawater, with null partitioning to any sorption processes during estuarine mixing until reaching the Atlantic Ocean.
Distribution and availability of rare earth elements and trace elements in the estuarine waters of the Ría of Huelva (SW Spain)

Abstract:Metal pollution in estuaries represents a serious environmental challenge, especially in areas affected by industrial and mining activities. This study investigates the metal partitioning and availability of rare earth elements (REE), Y and other trace metals (Ag, Tl, U and Cs) in the Ria of Huelva estuary (SW Spain), strongly affected by mining and industrial activities. A 30 h monitoring campaign was performed collecting periodic water samples and deploying diffusive gradient in thin films (DGTs) devices to determine the main factors controlling metal availability. The dissolved concentrations of U (3118–3952 ng/L) and Cs (284–392 ng/L) were in the same order of magnitude than those reported in other estuaries and coastal waters worldwide, however, REE (26–380 ng/L), Y (15–109 ng/L), Ag (14–307 ng/L) and Tl (29–631 ng/L) concentrations exceeded these values for the same salinities. Unlike most metals (i.e. Ag, Tl, U, Cs), which were mainly found in the dissolved form (87–100% of total), REE and Y were found in the particulate phase (22–36% of total). Metal lability was mainly related to the concentration in the water column following this order: U>REE>Y>Ag>Tl. A similar binding mechanism was observed for Tl and Cd, due to its chemical affinity. This relationship between chemical properties and absorption by DGT-resin was also observed for REE (and Y), Rb and Sr, which may cause bioaccumulation upon persistent exposure, considering the ability of these metals to cross the biological membranes. The lability of metals predicted by geochemical codes did not coincide with absorption of labile metals by DGTs due probably to the instability of complexes in contact with the DGT membranes, the inability of metals to form thermodynamically stable complexes or the absorption of colloids. From this work it can be concluded that DGT passive sampling should complement traditional sampling to monitor metal availability in aquatic environments.

Abstract:In the latest years, the concentration levels of certain metals and metalloids in the sediments of the Galician Rías have shown an increasing trend (e.g., As, Zn, Cu, Pb, Hg). These areas are also characterized by their richness in nutrients and their great aquaculture or mariculture activity, with the presence of more than 3500 mussel rafts in the Rías Baixas. The inner areas of the Galician Rías are subjected to activities that resuspend the sediment such as high levels of maritime traffic and dredging or cleaning operations. It is likely that a transfer of these elements to the water column happens during the resuspension of sediments caused by natural events or anthropogenic activities. In this study, selected samples of surface sediments of the Ría de Pontevedra (NW Spain) were subjected to a procedure of aerobic oxidation to determine the concentration of some elements (Fe, Mn, Cu, Cr, Pb, Hg, and Zn) released from the sediment to the aqueous phase. The experiment was carried out within 5 days. Measurements of pH and total concentration were taken both in water and sediment samples. Furthermore, speciation of trace elements was carried out in the sediment samples. Trace element concentrations were lower in the sediments during aerobic oxidation, being released to the aqueous phase. From an environmental point of view, Cu was the only trace element released in quantities that may be toxic for the organisms in the area. This problem of sediment oxidation related to dredging activities or natural storm conditions should be considered in environmental impact studies and transferred to stakeholders.

Abstract:The extensive extraction activity of mercury ores in Asturias (northwest Spain), also rich in As and Sb, has impacted the Nalón river estuary. The objective of this research was to assess the historical evolution of As-Hg-Sb accumulation in the salt marsh sediments of this area. For this purpose, sediment cores were collected from two different salt marshes (eastern and western river banks) in the estuarine environment to evaluate the degree of anthropogenic enrichment and the geochronology of As-Hg-Sb accumulation. Core subsampling was performed by cutting 2-cm-thick slices of sediments. The subsamples were then analysed for several physical and chemical parameters. Sedimentation rate was assessed by measuring short-lived radionuclides (excess 210Pb and 137Cs). Pre-mining levels of As-Hg-Sb were observed at core depths below 50 cm. In the less extended salt marsh (eastern river bank), maximum As-Hg-Sb concentrations of 87.48, 3.66, and 5.75 μg·g−1, respectively, were found at the core top as a consequence of long-term mining activity in the area. The vertical distribution of As-Hg-Sb was influenced by the single-point contamination sources, whereas grain-size variability and diagenetic remobilisation did not seem affected. Geochronological measurements showed that the depositional fluxes of As-Hg-Sb were influenced by anthropogenic input after 1900, when mining activity in the area was most intense. Hg mining ceased in 1969; however, the corresponding core profiles did not show a drastic decreasing trend in element fluxes, implying that the river drainage basin retains some “memory” of contamination which affects riverine sediments. A preliminary gross estimation of total As-Hg-Sb “trapped” in the Nalón river salt marsh sediments amounted to approximately 18.7, 1.0, and 0.7 t, respectively. These morphological structures suffer erosive processes, thus representing a potential source of these elements associated with sediments; consequently, management conservation and monitoring of salt marshes should be taken into consideration from this environmental point of view.

Abstract:Trace metal contents and fluxes in downward particulate matter and dated sediment cores of the NW Alboran Sea are analysed in this study with the aim of assessing the role of the Atlantic inflow on their transport. Increases in Zn, Cu and Pb were detected in downward particulate matter collected by sediment traps after river flooding events and after the Aznalcollar mining spill. Their arrival coincided within the recently estimated time range for river particles discharged into the Gulf of Cádiz to reach the Alboran Sea, indicating that their transfer is enhanced during events of increased river inputs of contaminated particulate matter. This also suggests that the effects of potential tailing dam failures in the Gulf of Cádiz watersheds could reach the Alboran Sea. These trace metals also increased in the sediment cores from the continental rise since the second half of the 19th century, suggesting that contaminated particles have been continuously transferred towards the Mediterranean Sea since that time, when mining concessions and production increased in the SW Iberian Pyrite Belt.

Abstract:Co-transport of colloidal substances and pollutants is a pivotal link that significantly affects the environment of coastal groundwater. The effect of colloid mobilization and aquifer pore structure change on heavy metal transport driven by seawater-freshwater interface dynamics is not fully understood. In this study, packed column experiments were conducted to model the seawater intrusion (SWI) and freshwater replenishment (FWR) processes using a sampled medium from a coastal sandy aquifer. Hydrodynamic, hydrochemical variables, and heavy metal (Pb, Cu, Cd) transport during the propagation of the seawater-freshwater interface were tested and analyzed. During the SWI stage, cation exchange induced heavy metal liberations, and it developed peak concentrations synchronized with the seawater-freshwater interface at the pore volume of 1.00. The colloid-facilitated transport for heavy metals was the predominant mechanism in the FWR stage, characterized by a peak release lagging the interface propagation by approximately 0.5 pore volumes. Because the colloidal fraction was mobilized during aquifer desalination, it lagged behind the decline of the salinity gradient. Furthermore, Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) calculations explained that the replenishment decreased the depth of the secondary energy minimum of the colloids; meanwhile, the thickness of the electrical double layer increased from 0.63 nm to 10.14 nm, resulting in a repulsive energy barrier up to 3,213 kT. The transport of colloids led to a reduction in porosity from 18.16% to 2.28% of the total immobile domain. At these times, the dimension of the transported colloids evolved, showing a size-selective transport and therefore regulating the total emission fluxes of the heavy metals. These mechanisms were proposed to be incorporated in colloid filtration theory for targeting the coastal scenario.

Abstract:Estuaries may be important reservoirs for contaminants as they tend to act as sinks for fine, contaminant-reactive sediments, and, historically, they have acted as centres for industrial and urban development. Analysis of dated sediment cores from these areas may allow historical trends in heavy metal input to be reconstructed, and recent and historical inputs of metal contaminants to be compared. Undisturbed saltmarsh settings have been used widely in the reconstruction of historical trends in metal input as saltmarshes provide a stable, vegetated substrate of dominantly fine sediments, and are less prone to erosion and reworking than adjacent mudflat areas. In comparison, much less research on historical pollution trends has been undertaken at estuarine sites which are prone to severe local disturbance, such as intertidal areas which are routinely dredged or where sedimentary processes have been modified by human activities such as shipping, salt working, port activities, land claim etc. This paper assesses the usefulness of 210Pb and 137Cs dating, combined with geochemical studies, in reconstructing historical trends in heavy metal input and sediment accretion in 3 heavily-modified, industrialised estuarine areas in Europe: the Bilbao estuary (Spain), Southampton Water (UK), and the Mulinello estuary (Sicily). Of these sites, only a salt marsh core from the Mulinello estuary provides a high-resolution record of recent heavy metal inputs. In Southampton Water only a partial record of changing metal inputs over time is retained due to land-claim and possible early-diagenetic remobilisation, while at Bilbao the vertical distribution of heavy metals in intertidal flats is mainly controlled by input on reworked sediment particles and variations in sediment composition. Where 137Cs and 210Pb distributions with depth allow a chronology of sediment deposition to be established, and early-diagenetic remobilisation has been minimal, mudflat and saltmarsh cores from even the most heavily-disturbed estuarine sites can provide useful information on variations in historical contaminant input. When the sediments have been vigorously mixed or reworked, large-scale compositional variations are present, or significant early-diagenetic remobilisation has occurred, however, only general information on the scale of contamination can be obtained.

Abstract:The pivotal role of 5-HT in the control of appetite was formally proposed nearly 30 years ago. In particular endogenous hypothalamic 5-HT has been implicated in the processes of within meal satiation and the end state of post meal satiety. Of the numerous 5-HT receptor subtypes currently identified, 5-HT(1B) and 5-HT(2C) receptors are believed to mediate the 5-HT induced satiety. 5-HT drugs such as d-fenfluramine, selective serotoninergic reuptake inhibitor (SSRIs) and 5-HT(2C) receptor agonists have all been shown to significantly attenuate rodent body weight gain, an effect strongly associated with marked hypophagia. D-Fenfluramine, sibutramine, fluoxetine and the 5-HT(2C) receptor agonist mCPP have also all been shown to reduce caloric intake by modifying appetite in both lean and obese humans. Specifically, 5-HT drugs reduce appetite prior to and after the consumption of fixed caloric loads, and reduce pre meal appetite and caloric intake at ad libitum meals. Clinically significant weight loss over a year or more can be produced by both d-fenfluramine and sibutramine treatment, but apparently not by the SSRI fluoxetine. Treatment with the preferential 5-HT(2C) receptor agonist mCPP and the serotonin precursor 5-HTP has also been shown to produce weight loss in the obese. Issues around the actual and possible side effects of these compounds, and in the case of d-fenfluramine toxicity, have led to a search for drugs that act selectively on the CNS 5-HT receptors critical to the satiety response. Currently, a new generation of 5-HT(2C) selective agonists have been developed (including Ro 60-0175, Org 12962, VER-3323, BVT-933 and YM348) and at least one, ADP356, is currently undergoing clinical trials. Hopefully, such drugs will be as or even more effective at regulating appetite and controlling body weight, and will also be free of their predecessors' side effect.

Abstract:The ecological status of Algeciras Bay (South-west Europe), highly influenced by anthropogenic activities, was assessed by monitoring Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cu in water and sediment samples. Total contents and metal fractions with different availabilities and their spatial-seasonal distribution were determined. The trend in water and sediment contents were Zn > Pb ≈ Cu > Cd, without significant seasonal variations. Sites 3 and 4, closest to industrial activities, had the highest metal concentrations, mainly in sediments. Cd showed low partition coefficient in water, indicating higher bioavailability. Total metal content in sediments exceeded the threshold effect level for Cu and were close to Pb. The BCR procedure revealed the highest availabilities for Cd and Pb, due to its higher content in exchangeable and reducible fractions. Higher Pb levels (21.4 ± 5.1 mg/kg) were found in sediments of this bay compared with other ecosystems. Pollution indexes for sediment quality revealed that site 3 was the most polluted (CF = 7.12 and Igeo = 2.25). For an integrative study of the ecological status of this significant bay, these results have been complemented with the metal evaluation in benthic and benthopelagic fish tissues in Ecological status of Algeciras Bay, in a highly anthropised area in south-west Europe, through metal assessment—Part II: Biotic samples.

Abstract:Huelva Estuary is a transition zone where REE-rich acidic waters interact with saline-alkaline seawater. This mixing process influences the geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of particulate and dissolved fractions. The Tinto River has >11,000μgL-1 dissolved REE (pH=1.66), whereas seawater only reaches 8.75·10-2μgL-1 dissolved REE (pH=7.87). REE-normalized patterns in "pH<6 solutions" are parallel and show similarities, diminishing their concentration as pH increases. Sequential extraction performed on the generated precipitates of mixed solutions indicates that most REE are associated to the residual phase. In a second order, REE are associated with soluble salts at pH3 and 3.5 whereas in sediments generated at pH4 and 5, they are distributed in salts (1° extraction), poorly crystallized Fe-bearing minerals (schwertmannite, 3° extraction) and well crystallized Fe-bearing minerals (goethite - hematite, 4° extraction). Finally, precipitated REE are highest at pH6 newly formed minerals with a release to solution in higher pH.

Abstract:Batch leaching experiments, Freudlich isotherm, correlation analysis (CA) and principal component analysis (PCA) were undertaken to explore the mechanisms that govern the release of sediment–associated metals (i.e. Cd, Cu, Mn and Pb) under the salinity stress in the Yangtze River Estuary. Special attention has been paid to the role of sediments’ physico-chemical properties and metal chemical speciation. The increase of salinity promoted the metal mobility which followed the order: Cd > Mn > Cu > Pb. Sediments properties (e.g., particle component and organic carbon) governed the mobility of Cd; metal chemical speciation controlled the release of Mn, while the mobility of Cu and Pb were simultaneously affected by the two factors. Different metal release mechanisms caused by salinity changes might be explained by: the chloro-complexation for Cd, the encouragement of acidity changes for Mn, and the high affinity to Fe–Mn oxides, organic substances and specific sorption sites in the sediments for Cu and Pb. Under salinity effect, Cd and Mn exhibited higher ecological risk and mobility, while Cu and Pb seemed to be more conservative.
Potential Release of Zinc and Cadmium From Mine-Affected Soils Under Flooding, a Mesocosm Study

Abstract:Metal-contaminated mining soils pose serious environmental and health risks if not properly managed, especially in mountainous areas, which are more susceptible to perturbation. Currently, climate change is leading to more frequent and intense rain events, which cause flooding episodes, thereby altering soil redox equilibria and contaminants stability. We evaluated the potential release of Zn and Cd (two of the most common inorganic contaminants) and the factors regulating their solubility and speciation in two heavily contaminated soils representative of a Zn-mining area. The soils were flooded under aerobic (for 24 h) and anaerobic (for 62 days) conditions using mesocosm experiments, sequential extractions, and geochemical modelling. Leaching trials under aerobic conditions showed a high release of Zn and Cd (10 times the legislative limits), with metals possibly migrating via water infiltration or runoff. Under anaerobic conditions Zn and Cd were initially released. Then, solution concentrations decreased gradually (Zn) or sharply (Cd) until the end of the experiment. Sequential extractions and multisurface modelling indicated that both metals precipitated mainly as carbonates. This was confirmed by a geochemical multisurface modelling, which also predicted the formation of sulphides after 60 days in one soil. The model calculated metals to be preferentially complexed by organic matter and well predicted the observed soil solution concentrations. The results showed that during flooding episodes contaminants could be promptly transferred to other environmental compartments. The use of multisurface modelling coupled with laboratory experiments provided useful indications on the potential release and speciation in case of anoxic conditions.
