Abstract:Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the physico-mechanical properties of a high viscosity glass ionomer cement (GIC) reinforced with TiO2 nanotubes (TiO2-nt). Methods: TiO2-nt was incorporated into the GIC powder components (Ketac Molar EasyMix™) in concentrations of 0% (control group), 3%, 5%, 7% by weight. Compressive strength (n = 10/group), three point bending for flexural strength (n = 18/group), microshear bond strength to dentin and failure mode (n = 20/group), and surface roughness and weight loss before and after brushing simulation (30,000 cycles) (n = 8/group) were evaluated. Data were submitted to Shapiro-Wilk, ANOVA, Tukey and Chi-square tests (α ≤ 0.05). Results: Addition of 5% of TiO2-nt into GIC presented the highest values for compressive strength and differed from the control, 3% and 7% groups (p = 0.023). There were no significant differences in flexural strength (p = 0.107) and surface roughness before and after the dental brushing (p = 0.287) among the groups. GIC added with 5% TiO2-nt showed the lowest weight loss values (p = 0.01), whereas the control, 3% or 5% TiO2-nt groups presented similar microshear bond strength values (p ≥ 0.05). The 5% TiO2-nt group featured higher microshear bond strength than the 7% TiO2-nt group (p = 0.034). Cohesive in material was the most representative failure mode for all groups. Significance: The incorporation of TiO2-nt did not affect GIC's adhesiveness to dentin, but improved its compressive strength at 5%. Furthermore, TiO2-nt decreased the percentage of weight loss after GIC's surface wear.

Abstract:The objective was to address the repercussion of adding titanium dioxide nanotubes (TiO 2 -nt) into high-viscosity conventional glass ionomer cement (GIC) on the biological properties of pre-odontoblastic cells (MDPC-23) challenged by lipopolysaccharides (LPS - 2 μg/mL). TiO 2 -nt was added to Ketac Molar EasyMix at 3, 5, 7 %, whereas unblended GIC served as control. Analyses included proliferation (n=6; 24, 48, 72 h), metabolism (MTT; n=6; 24, 48, 72 h); morphology laser microscopy (n=3; 24, 48, 72 h); proteome assessments IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, VEGF, TNF-α (n=3; 12, 18 h); mRNA levels (RT-PCR) of Il-1β, Il-6, Il-10, VEGF, TNF-α (n=3; 12, 18 h) and DSPP (n=3; 24, 72, 120 h). Data analysis included Shapiro-Wilk, Levene, and generalized linear models (α=0.05). Results demonstrated that cell proliferation increased over time for all groups, and was not impacted by TiO 2 -nt (p>0.05). GIC groups displayed lower MTT values compared to cells cultured without GIC discs (p=0.019); disregarding the presence of TiO 2 . Remarkably, TiO 2 -nt reversed the effect of GIC, reducing the levels of selected biomarkers. LPS treatment modified the expression of the immune-inflammatory markers by MDPC-23 cells (p<0.0001). Morphological analysis did not reveal distinctions for any of the studied. TiO 2 -nt modulated immune-inflammatory and dentin marker expression by MDPC-23 cells cultured on conventional GIC discs, and did not affect cell morphology/viability, regardless LPS exposure. In conclusion, TiO 2 -nt may become a reliable clinical strategy to encourage pulp tissue repair.

Abstract:Abstract Dental caries is a commonly occurring non-communicable disease throughout the world that might compromise the quality of any individual’s life. Glass ionomer cements (GIC) are the most acceptable restorative materials due to their ease of manipulation, minimal tooth loss and least invasive strategy; however, they lack mechanical stability that has become a point of concern. Nanoparticles (NPs) are an outstanding option for modifying and enhancing the properties of dental materials. The focus of this study was to prepare novel, biocompatible titania dioxide (TiO 2 ) NPs as a dental-restorative material using an efficient probiotic Bacillus coagulans . The prepared NPs were incorporated into glass ionomer restorative material at varying concentrations and investigated for cell viability percentage, microhardness and surface morphology. Results indicated that pure 100% anatase phase TiO 2 NPs with particle size of 21.84 nm arranged in smooth, spherical agglomerates and clusters forms. These NPs depicted cell viability > 90%, thus confirming their non-cytotoxic behavior. GIC restorative materials reinforced by 5% titania (TiO 2 ) NPs demonstrated the highest microhardness in comparison to the control group and other experimental groups of the study. Surface morphology analysis revealed a reduction in cracks in this novel dental-restorative material supporting its compatible biological nature with better hardness strength and negligible crack propagation. Overall, these results indicated that TiO 2 NPs produced using a biological approach could be easily used as restorative materials in dental applications. Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate the in vivo effect of Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles and methacryloyloxyethyl phosphoryl choline (MPC) polymer modifications of glass-ionomer cement, to inhibit demineralization around orthodontic bands. Materials and Methods: 60 orthodontic patients with non-carious molars scheduled for banding were randomly divided into three groups. Grouping was based on (3% MPC, 3% nano-Titanium, and 3%+3% of both by weight) added to the luting glass-ionomer cement (GIC) Medicem, which was used for cementation of prefabricated micro-etched orthodontic bands. Demineralization was recorded by using DiagnoDent pen (KaVo, Biberach, Germany) device. Statistical evaluation was performed with one way ANOA test. Results: Bands cemented with conventional GIC showed the highest bacterial scores in comparison to those cemented with MPC polymer and nano-titanium modified GICs. There was significant difference between teeth banded with 3% MPC, 3% nano-titanium, and 3% MPC + 3% nano-titanium modified GICs. Conclusions: Modification of the banding GIC with MPC polymer and nano-titanium revealed a positive effect on reducing white spots around orthodontic bands.

Abstract:Objectives: To assess the impact of different concentrations TiO2-nt incorporated into a glass ionomer cement on the proliferation, mitochondrial metabolism, morphology, and pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokine production of cultured fibroblasts (NIH/3T3), whether or not stimulated by lipopolysaccharides (LPS-2 μg/mL, 24 h). Methods: TiO2-nt was added to KM (Ketac Molar EasyMix™, 3 %, 5 %, 7 % in weight); unblended KM was used as the control. The analyses included: Cell proliferation assay (n = 6; 24/48/72h); Mitochondrial metabolism assay (n = 6; 24/48/72h); Confocal laser microscopy (n = 3; 24/48/72h); Determination of biomarkers (IL-1β/IL-6/IL-10/VEGF/TNF) by using both multiplex technology (n = 6; 12/18 h) and the quantitative real-time PCR assay (q-PCR) (n = 3, 24/72/120 h). The data underwent analysis using both the Shapiro-Wilk and Levene tests, and by generalized linear models (α = 0.05). Results: It demonstrated that cell proliferation increased over time, regardless of the presence of TiO2-nt or LPS, and displayed a significant increase at 72 h; mitochondrial metabolism increased (p < 0.05), irrespective of exposure to LPS (p = 0.937); no cell morphology changes were observed; TiO2-nt reverted the impact of KM on the secreted levels of the evaluated proteins and the gene expressions in the presence of LPS (p < 0.0001). Conclusions: TiO2-nt did not adversely affect the biological behavior of fibroblastic cells cultured on GIC discs.
Cell viability assessment and ion release profiles of GICs modified with TiO 2 - and Mg-doped hydroxyapatite nanoparticles

Abstract:Objectives To assess and compare the cell viability and ion release profiles of two conventional glass ionomer cements (GICs), Fuji IX and Ketac Molar EasyMix, modified with TiO 2 and Mg-doped-HAp nanoparticles (NPs). Methods TiO 2 NPs, synthesized via a sol–gel method, and Mg-doped hydroxyapatite, synthesized via a hydrothermal process, were incorporated into GICs at a concentration of 5 wt.%. The biocompatibility of prepared materials was assessed by evaluating their effects on the viability of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs), together with monitoring ion release profiles. Statistical analysis was performed using One-way analysis of variance, with significance level p < 0.05. Results The addition of NPs did not significantly affect the biocompatibility of GICs, as evidenced by comparable decreased levels in cell viability to their original formulations. Distinct variations in cell viability were observed among Fuji IX and Ketac Molar, including their respective modifications. FUJI IX and its modification with TiO 2 exhibited moderate decrease in cell viability, while other groups exhibited severe negative effects. While slight differences in ion release profiles were observed among the groups, significant variations compared to original cements were not achieved. Fluoride release exhibited an initial "burst release" within the initial 24 h in all samples, stabilizing over subsequent days. Conclusions The addition of NPs did not compromise biocompatibility, nor anticariogenic potential of tested GICs. However, observed differences among FUJI IX and Ketac Molar, including their respective modifications, as well as induced low viability of DPSC by all tested groups, suggest the need for careful consideration of cement composition in their biological assessments. Clinical significance The findings contribute to understanding the complex interaction between NPs and GIC matrices. However, the results should be interpreted recognizing the inherent limitations associated with in vitro studies. Further research avenues could explore long-term effects, in vivo performance, and potential clinical applications.

Green Synthesis and Investigation of Antimicrobial Activity and Compressive Resilience of Glass Ionomer Cement Modified With Zirconia Nanoparticles: An In Vitro Study

Abstract:Background Glass ionomer cement (GIC) serves as a crucial biomaterial in dental restoration, offering applications in filling, lining, and adhesive procedures. Nevertheless, its mechanical properties often fall short, particularly in regions subjected to considerable stress. To address this issue, zirconia nanoparticles are incorporated at specific levels. Aim To assess the antimicrobial efficacy and compressive resilience of GIC modified with zirconia nanoparticles synthesized through green synthesis methods. Material and methods Zirconia nanoparticles were synthesized via a green method utilizing aloe vera extract in solvent form. These nanoparticles were then mixed into GIC at different concentration levels. Group I incorporated zirconia nanoparticles at a concentration of 3%, Group II at 5%, and Group III at 10%, while Group IV was the control, consisting of traditional GIC. Following that, samples were prepared and underwent characterization through various analytical techniques. The ability to inhibit microbial growth and the compressive resilience of the groups were examined. Microbial inhibition against the bacterial strains was assessed through minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and the ability to withstand compression was gauged by measuring the maximum force the specimen could endure before fracturing. Data underwent analysis with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, IBM Corp., Version 24.0, Armonk, NY). Repeated measures of analysis of variance (ANOVA) were utilized to gauge average MIC values and compressive strength. Following this, Tukey's post hoc test was employed for pairwise comparisons. Results The findings indicated, incorporating zirconia nanoparticles into GIC led to an improvement in its antimicrobial effectiveness, with a noticeable enhancement observed as the weight percent (% wt) of the additive increased. This improvement was notably noticeable in its effectiveness against Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus, exceeding that of the control with a noteworthy distinction. Furthermore, there were significant enhancements in compressive strength, in Group I (180.48 ± 1.02), Group II (191.25 ± 0.52), and Group III (197.52 ± 0.75), compared to Group IV (167.22 ± 1.235), with significant disparities (p < 0.05). Conclusion The research illustrates that introducing green-synthesized zirconia nanoparticles into GIC leads to heightened bactericidal potency and compressive resilience when contrasted with the control group (Group IV). Notably, the highest concentration of 10% demonstrated the most favourable antimicrobial attributes alongside enhanced strength. Consequently, integrating green-synthesized zirconia nanoparticles into GIC holds potential as a proficient material. In future studies, there should be an exploration of molecular chemistry and bonding mechanisms to enhance our comprehension of its capabilities.

Abstract:--This paper presents the design of a Fuzzy PID controller (FPID) based on fuzzy logic with a PID structure with many valued logic and reasoning. The self-turning Fuzzy PID control take in an error and the rate of change of error of the altitude and attitude of the quadrotor as the input to the fuzzy controller and use the fuzzy rules to adjust the PID parameter automatically. Simulations have been conducted to observe the differences in controlling the quadrotor in flight using the new FPID controller instead of using PID controller. The effectiveness of the developed FPID is verified using the dSPACE platform whereby the Simulink model of the controller is converted to a real time system to generate the control signals for the control of quad rotor helicopter.

Abstract:This study was conducted with the primary objective of enhancing the properties of Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC), a widely utilized restorative material in Dentistry, through the incorporation of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO 2 NPs). The synthesis of CeO 2 NPs employed the co-precipitation method with mushroom extract, and different concentrations (2, 4, 6, 8 wt%) were integrated into commercially available GIC powder via a solid-state reaction. Thorough characterization using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDAX) and High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) validated the successful synthesis of CeO 2 NPs. The modified CeO 2 NPs modified GIC demonstrated a substantial improvement in microhardness, compressive and tensile strength, as well as antibacterial activity when compared to the conventional GIC (p < 0.001). This noteworthy enhancement addresses critical limitations inherent to GIC, such as poor mechanical strength and susceptibility to secondary caries, presenting promising applications in Dentistry. Furthermore, cytotoxicity was assessed by MTT assay and evaluation of the optical properties using the CIE 1976 L*a*b* color system was done. These tests affirmed the non-toxic nature of the material and revealed color values closely resembling those of human teeth and widely used restorative materials. This alignment with the natural tooth color not only adds an aesthetic dimension to the material's superiority but also underscores its potential for seamless integration within the oral environment. The clinical significance of this research lies in the potential advancement of GIC, not only in terms of improved mechanical and antibacterial properties but also in ensuring safety and aesthetic compatibility. The findings of this study hold promise for the development of superior dental materials, suggesting a positive trajectory towards enhanced clinical outcomes and addressing current challenges in restorative dentistry, particularly in pediatric applications.

Abstract:Restaurant employees must deal with loud noise, busy environments, difficult customers, heavy, awkward, sharp, and hot objects, repetitive motions, and stress on various joints, all of which can lead to fatigue, sudden accidents, and longterm musculoskeletal injury. The goal of this case study was to assess the risk of injuries and accidents from conducting various tasks in the restaurant, specifically carrying/lifting, table management, and polishing silverware. The nine participants were servers at a local country club restaurant. Physical workload was measured by a scale of physical exertion. Cognitive workload was assessed, as well as cumulative trauma disorder risk. Overall results show that there is sufficient risk in some of the tasks to warrant concern. Specific results are discussed, as well as recommendations for improved safety.
Synthesis and Characterization of Titanium Oxide Nanoparticles with a Novel Biogenic Process for Dental Application

Abstract:The prevalence of dental caries has been largely consonant over time despite the enhancement in dental technologies. This study aims to produce novel GIC restorative material by incorporating TiO2 nanoparticles synthesized by Bacillus subtilis for the treatment of dental caries. The TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by inoculating a fresh culture of Bacillus subtilis into a nutrient broth for 24 h, which was then characterized by XRD, DRS, FTIR, AFM, SEM, TEM and EDX. These TiO2 nanoparticles were incorporated in GIC restorative material at different concentrations (0–10% TiO2 -GIC) and were tested for their mechanical properties in a universal testing machine. The XRD analysis revealed synthesis of anatase and rutile-phased TiO2 nanoparticles with a particle size of 70.17 nm that was further confirmed by SEM and TEM analysis. The EDX spectrum indicated prominent peaks of titanium and oxygen with no impurities in the prepared material. Treatment with 5% TiO2 -GIC proved to be most effective for the treatment of dental caries with no observable cytotoxic effect. An increase in the compressive strength of TiO2 nanoparticle-reinforced GIC was observed as the concentration of the TiO2 nanoparticles was increased up to 5%; subsequently, the compressive strength was lowered. An increase in the flexural strength was observed in GIC containing 0%, 3% and 5% TiO2 nanoparticles sequentially. Based on the results, it can be concluded that Bacillus subtilis-derived TiO2 nanoparticles have excellent potential for developing next generation of restorative materials for dental issues.

Abstract:This study investigated the mechanical properties and antibacterial properties of hexagonal boron nitride and titanium dioxide (h-BN-TiO 2 ) nanocomposite modified traditional glass ionomer cement. The mechanism of formation of the h-BN-TiO 2 nanocomposite was elucidated by conducting molecular dynamics (MD) simulations using the Material Studio (MS) software. Furthermore, synthesis of h-BN-TiO 2 nanocomposite by the original growth method using hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (h-BNNs) and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 Nps) and characterization using TEM and AFM to determine their particle sizes, morphologies, and structures. The mechanical properties and antibacterial efficacies of the glass ionomer cement composites were analyzed based on the different mass fractions (0, 0.3, 0.7, 1.1, and 1.5 wt%) of the h-BN-TiO 2 nanocomposite. The results showed when the concentration of the h-BN-TiO 2 nanocomposite was 1.1 wt%, the Compressive strength (CS) and Vicker hardness (VHN) were 80.2% and 149.65% higher, respectively, compared to the glass ionomer cement without any h-BN-TiO 2 nanocomposite. Also, the increase in the concentration of the h-BN-TiO 2 nanocomposite led to a decrease in both the coefficient of friction (COF) and solubility, but a 93.4% increase in the antibacterial properties of the glass ionomer cement composites. The cell survival rate of each group was more than 70% after 48 h, but the difference was not statistically significant ( p > 0.05). Therefore, the h-BN-TiO 2 nanocomposite served as a reinforcing material for glass ionomer cement, which can be useful in clinical dentistry and provide a new strategy for improving the clinical utility of glass ionomer cement.

Abstract:Introduction Microorganisms play an important role in causing inflammation in the pulp and periapical regions. Even after undergoing chemo-mechanical procedures during root canal treatment, bacteria may persist within dentinal tubules, posing a risk of disease recurrence. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), introduced as a dental material, has been investigated as a potential antibacterial agent since its early use. Calcium and phosphorus are the primary ions in MTA, and their antibacterial characteristics are attributed to the release of calcium hydroxide through surface hydrolysis of calcium silicate components. Previous studies have shown that MTA has limited antimicrobial properties. Several alterations have been made to enhance the biological properties of MTA, such as incorporating nanoparticles made from silver, zinc, gold, and titanium. Therefore, in this study, titanium tetrafluoride (TiF4) was added to MTA in an effort to enhance its antimicrobial properties. Aim To compare and evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of MTA after the incorporation of TiF4. Materials and methods A total of 56 samples were made by mixing MTA with different weight proportions of TiF4 (1 wt%, 2 wt%, and 3 wt%). Out of these, 28 samples were taken to test each of the following properties: antibacterial efficacy and pH. The specimens were prepared using stainless steel molds of recommended dimensions for testing the pH. The pH was evaluated using a pH meter, and the antibacterial efficacy was assessed using the direct contact test. Data regarding the antibacterial efficacy and pH of MTA with various proportions of TiF4 were investigated for normality using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and assessed for normal distribution. The antibacterial properties among the four groups were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by pairwise multiple comparisons using Tukey's Honest Significant Difference test. The level of statistical significance was determined at p ≤ 0.05. MTA, when incorporated with TiF4, showed enhanced antibacterial properties. Results On day 1, the group treated with MTA containing 3% TiF4 demonstrated the strongest antibacterial effectiveness, with a mean of 4.67 ± 0.04 colony-forming units (CFU)/mL × 10^8. However, the group treated with plain MTA had the lowest mean values, at 5.67 ± 0.25 CFU/mL × 10^8. On day 1, the MTA group with 3% TiF4 also had the highest mean pH values (11.90 ± 0.05), while the plain MTA group had the lowest mean pH values (11.64 ± 0.78). On day 7, the MTA group with 3% TiF4 had the highest pH value (12.85 ± 0.08), whereas the plain MTA group had the lowest pH value (11.92 ± 0.09). Conclusion The inclusion of TiF4 resulted in an augmentation of the antibacterial efficacy of MTA against Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis). Hence, the integration of TiF4 into MTA can be considered a promising development against E. faecalis during endodontic procedures.
Evaluation of Antimicrobial Efficiency, Shear Bond Strength, and Adhesive Remnant Index of TiO2 Infiltrated Orthodontic Adhesive - An In Vitro Study

Abstract:Background: Enamel demineralization is an unavoidable adverse effect encountered with bonding brackets in orthodontic therapy. Introducing nanoparticles into the composite adhesive paste can prevent enamel demineralization. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is known to exhibit direct antimicrobial efficiency. This study aimed to assess the antibacterial efficiency and shear bond strength (SBS) of an orthodontic bonding composite infiltrated with TiO2 nanoparticles. Materials and methods: This in vitro study evaluated the efficiency of TiO2 nanoparticle-incorporated light-curing orthodontic composite paste (ENLIGHT, ORMCO). Twenty extracted premolars were randomly and equally allocated to the two study groups, N = 10. While a conventional composite was utilized for the bonding brackets in Group I, a TiO2-incorporated composite was used in Group 2. The adhesive remnant index (ARI) scores given by Artun and Bergland et al. and SBS were determined. Furthermore, the antimicrobial efficiency was estimated using the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)/minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and agar well diffusion assay for six composite disc specimens. The results were statistically analyzed using the chi-square test and Student's t test, at P < 0.05. Results: After 24 h of curing, no statistical mean difference was observed between the two groups in terms of ARI or SBS scores (P > 0.05). However, there was a significant increase in the antimicrobial efficiency of Group II when compared with Group I (P < 0.05). Conclusion: TiO2 nanoparticle-incorporated orthodontic composites improve the antimicrobial efficiency with no significant change in the SBS. The ARI scores indicate the presence of 50% remnant orthodontic composite on the tooth enamel surface post debonding.

Abstract:Aim: To evaluate the effect of different add-ons on the flexural strength (FS) of glass ionomer cement (GIC).Materials and methods: Around 72 samples were fabricated and divided among the following six different groups: group I-control (conventional GIC-nonmodified), group II-GIC powder modified with 3% titanium dioxide (TiO2) and liquid is unmodified, group III-powder modified with 10% nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) and liquid is unmodified, group IV-powder is unmodified and Liquid is modified with 10% chitosan (CH), group V-powder is modified with 3% TiO2 and liquid is modified with 10% CH, and group VI-powder is modified with 10% nHA and liquid is modified with 10% CH. The samples were then subjected to a three-point bending test on a universal testing machine for the evaluation of FS. The results obtained were analyzed statistically using the analysis of variance (ANOVA) test.Result: The mean FS value of group V depicts significantly high FS among all groups (29.42 ± 3.35). A significant difference was present in FS amongst all the groups that is groups V>II>IV>VI>III>I.Conclusion: Glass ionomer cement (GIC) powder can be modified with nHA, nanotitanium, and GIC liquid can be modified with CH to improve its FS.Clinical significance: Glass ionomer cement (GIC) supplemented with additives like nanoparticles (NPs) and CH can be used as an enhanced filling material due to its potential antibacterial properties and in areas with a high masticatory load.How to cite this article: Showkat I, Chaudhary S, Sinha AA, et al. Miswak-Infused Glass Ionomer Cement: A Comparative In Vitro Analysis of Antibacterial Efficacy and Compressive Strength

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Glass ionomer cement (GIC) restorations are commonly used in primary dentition, due to their aesthetic appeal, self-adhesive nature, and biocompatibility. However, the material's limited antibacterial activity and inadequate mechanical strength highlight the necessity for modifying the material.AIM: The study aims to evaluate and compare the antimicrobial potency and compressive strength of GIC-incorporated Miswak extract with that of conventional GIC.MATERIALS AND METHODS: After obtaining the Miswak extract, a modified GIC was formulated by combining the extract with the conventional GIC powder and liquid components, in three different ratios (Powder: Extract and Liquid), Group I (2:1:1), Group II (3:1:2), Group III (3:2:1), and the Group IV as control, which consist of unmodified/conventional GIC. To evaluate and compare the antibacterial efficacy of the modified and unmodified GIC, standard strains of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus were utilized. For each group, the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay was tested. For the evaluation of compressive strength, cylindrical moulds were utilized in compliance with ISO 9917-1:2007 standards and tested using the universal testing machine (Instron, ElectroPuls®, Bangalore, IND). The highest force exerted at the point of specimen fracture was recorded to calculate the compressive strength values in MPa. The data obtained were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, IBM Corp., Version 24.0, Armonk, NY) software. The statistical analysis was conducted utilizing repeated measures of analysis of variance (ANOVA) to calculate the mean MIC values and compressive strength, with pairwise comparisons assessed using Tukey's post hoc test.RESULTS: The results proved that the antimicrobial properties of Miswak containing GIC performed better against S. mutans and Lactobacillus with a statistically significant difference when compared with group IV (p<0.05), it has been found that an increase in the concentration of extract increased the antimicrobial potency. Significant results were obtained in compressive strength where Group II (41.49±3.6) and Group III (15.23±4.96) proved to be weaker than the control (62.69±2.58), while Group I showed no differences from the control group (p>0.05).CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that Group I was found to be better in terms of both antimicrobial properties and compressive strength, where no significant difference in compressive strength was identified when comparing Group I with Group IV. Thus, the overall study depicts that a lesser concentration of extract can be the best option in terms of good antimicrobial properties without altering its strength. Hence, the Miswak containing GIC could be a promising restorative material; further studies should include considering intraoral variables such as masticatory stress, moisture levels and in-vivo tests of this combination.

Abstract:Background: Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) denture-base resins have poor surface properties that facilitates microbial adhesion causing denture stomatitis. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effect of different sizes and percentages of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NP) on the antimicrobial property, surface roughness and surface hardness of PMMA denture base resin. Methods: A systematic search of English peer-reviewed articles, clinical trial registries, grey literature databases and other online sources was performed using the PRISMA-S Guidelines for In-Vivo and In-Vitro studies. Qualitative data synthesis was performed to analyse sample dimensions, acrylic used, treatments of nanoparticles, methods used for testing and effect of size and percentage of nanoparticle. Risk of bias assessment was done using modified Cochrane risk of bias tool. Results: Out of 1376 articles, 15 were included. TiO 2 NP of size less than 30 nm was most frequently used. Both antimicrobial property and surface hardness improved irrespective of the size of the added TiO 2 NP. Three studies reported increase in the surface roughness with less than 50 nm TiO 2 NP. 3% TiO 2 NP was most frequently used. On increasing the percentage, three studies reported an increase in antimicrobial property, while two studies found no change. With TiO 2 NP greater than or equal to 3%, six studies reported an increase in surface hardness, while two reported increase in surface roughness. Large methodological variations were observed across studies. All studies except one were of moderate quality. Conclusions: On addition of TiO 2 NP to heat polymerized PMMA, the antimicrobial property and surface hardness improved irrespective of the size of the TiO 2 NP, however, addition of nanoparticles less than 50 nm increased the surface roughness. Increasing the percentage of TiO 2 NP increased the surface hardness but did not always increase the antimicrobial property. Addition of 3% TiO 2 NP provided optimum results with regards to antimicrobial effect and surface hardness, but increase in the surface roughness.

Abstract:Background: The nanotechnologies have been applied for dental restorative materials manufacturing such as glass ionomer cement, composites, tooth regeneration, and endodontic sealers. The study aimed to investigate the chemical bond of conventional glass ionomer cement and to evaluate the addition of different concentrations of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the quality of the chemical bond of glass ionomer cement to primary dentin. Methods: Silver nanoparticle (AgNP) powder was added in concentrations of 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6% to the conventional powder of GIC Fuji II. Then, the powder was added to the liquid and mixed with the recommended powder/liquid ratio of 3.6:1 g. The Fourier-transform infrared spectra (FTIR) of teeth with 0.2%, 0.4%, and 0.6% w/w of silver nanoparticles in GIC fills and the control tooth were obtained. The conventional glass ionomer was used as a control group. The control and the plain silver tooth were subjected to FTIR analysis using an ATR-FTIR spectrophotometer (ThermoFisher Scientific, Waltham, MA, United States) with zinc selenide (ZnSe) ATR crystal (attenuated total reflection) and OPUS v7.5 software. All spectra were recorded in the range of 500-3,500 cm-1 in the transmission mode with an ATR module. Results: The AgNPs added at 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6% concentration to GIC provided some information in the context of bond interaction with the dentin. Various bond peaks were seen for calcium, carbonate, phosphate, and amide. In our study, only the amide and phosphate were generated. The amide peaks were almost similar to the control, 0.2%, 0.4%, and 0.6%, with the peaks in the range of 1250-1650 cm-1. There was a clear shift in the phosphate peak from the control, 0.2, and 0.4%, which was about 1050 cm-1, whereas for 0.6%, there was a clear shift from 1050 cm-1 to 880 cm-1. Conclusion: GIC supplemented with AgNPs showed that a concentration above 0.4% of AgNPs altered the bond quality in dentin interaction. In conclusion, adding AgNPs at a minimal level improves the mechanical properties and maintains the same bond quality as GIC.
In vitro evaluation of some mechanical properties and fluoride release of glass-ionomer cement modified with seashell nanoparticles

Abstract:Background: This research assessed the compressive strength and microhardness of glass-ionomer cement (GIC) after incorporating seashell nanoparticles and evaluated the inert fluoride-releasing ability. Methods: Seashell nanoparticles were synthesized by a mechanical grinding protocol. These particles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray and added to the glass-ionomer powder in a weight-to-weight ratio. Seventy-five study samples were distributed into eight samples for each study group (control, 5%, and 10% seashell) to have 24 samples for each test of the study (compressive strength, microhardness, and fluoride release). One sample per group was prepared for the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) test. The fluoride ion release was measured after one and four weeks of incubation period at 37 ºC, while other tests were conducted after 24 hours of incubation. Results: In all the test variables, the 10% seashell group showed the highest significant mean, followed by the 5% seashell and the control group. However, there was no significant difference between the 5% and 10% seashell groups in the first week of fluoride release. Conclusion: According to the results, 10% seashell nanoparticles were the best to improve the mechanical properties of GIC and boost the fluoride-releasing potential.
