Abstract:Bovine fasciolosis is a parasitic disease of cattle caused by ingesting metacercariae of liver flukes from the genus Fasciola. A cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2021 to April 2022, encompassing a total of 384 cattle randomly selected from diverse locations. The study included cattle of various ages and genders, aiming to to determine the prevalence of bovine fasciolosis and its associated risk factors in and around Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. Fecal examinations were performed to detect fluke eggs, and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics in STATA Version 20.0 to summarize bovine fasciolosis prevalence. Chi-square tests assessed relationships with infection rates and risk factors, with significance set at P < 0.05. Out of 384 fecal samples analyzed, 49.21% tested positive for Fasciola eggs. The prevalence of the condition varied significantly by origin, with rates of 50% in Tikurit, 61.84% in Sebatamit, 27.65% in Latammba, and 59.37% in Kebele 11. In terms of body condition, prevalence was notably higher in cattle classified as poor (64%) compared to those in medium condition (50%) and fat cattle (26.96%), with these differences being statistically significant. Age also influenced prevalence, with young cattle having a rate of 50.38%, adults 47.33%, and old cattle 50.47%; however, these differences were not statistically significant. Sex did not significantly impact prevalence, with males at 49.73% and females at 48.73%. Additionally, local cattle exhibited a prevalence of 51.62%, whereas crossbreeds had a prevalence of 46.15%, with no significant differences observed between these groups (p < 0.05). The persistently high rates of bovine fasciolosis highlight the urgent need for comprehensive control measures. Implementing enhanced management practices to minimize cattle exposure to contaminated pastures and water sources is essential for effective prevention and control of this parasitic infection.

Abstract:Background : Fascioliasis, caused by Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica, is a global veterinary problem in livestock and an emerging zoonotic disease in various countries. Here we present prevalence estimates of Fasciola spp. in all hosts involved in the life cycle and identified risk factors associated with Fasciola transmission in northern Vietnam. Methodology/Principal findings : We conducted a cross-sectional survey in a community in Nghe An province where fascioliasis is endemic and inhabitants commonly consume raw vegetables. Applying a simple random and cluster sampling approach, we collected 1,137 stool and 1,390 blood samples from 1,396 human participants. From 664 buffaloes and cattle, we collected 656 fecal and 534 blood samples. We also collected 330 lymnaeid snails and 233 water plant samples. Human and animal fecal samples were examined by copro-microscopy, while blood samples were screened by ELISA to detect Fasciola serum antibodies. We examined infections in snails using PCR and metacercariae on water plants deploying an in-house technique. Descriptive analysis and logistic regression models were applied to estimate the prevalence of and risk factors for Fasciola infections. While the prevalence of Fasciola infections was very low in humans (0% by copro-microscopy; 0.07% by ELISA), it was high in animals (52% by copro-microscopy; 54% by ELISA). In the multivariable analysis, age was the only factor associated with Fasciola infections in animals. Fasciola could not be detected in any of the sampled water plants or lymnaeid snails.. Conclusion/Significance: This study indicated a high prevalence of Fasciola infections in animals and a very low prevalence in humans in a rural community in northern Vietnam. It is recommended to implement a control program to reduce the infection rate in buffaloes and cattle. Furthermore, health education activities for livestock owners should be carried out in Fasciola endemic areas.

Abstract:Fasciolosis is an emerging public health threat in a number of regions worldwide. To date, we lack an overview of both its occurrence and distribution in Southeast Asia across all actors involved in the life cycle, which impedes the development of disease control measures. Therefore, our objective was to collect recent information on the distribution and the prevalence of Fasciola spp. and the associated risk factors for infection in humans, animals, snails and plant carriers in Southeast Asia. Bibliographic and grey literature databases as well as reference lists of important review articles were searched for relevant records published between January 1 st , 2000, and June 30 th , 2022. The systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines for reporting systematic reviews. A total of 3,887 records were retrieved, of which 100 were included in the final analysis. The studies focused mainly on one host species (96.0%), with Fasciola spp. infection in animals being the most studied (72.0%), followed by humans (21.0%). Based on the used inclusion and exclusion criteria, reports were retrieved describing the presence of Fasciola spp. infection was in seven out of 11 countries in Southeast Asia. Depending on the diagnostic tool applied, the prevalence of Fasciola spp. infection ranged between 0.3% and 66.7% in humans, between 0% and 97.8% in animals, and between 0% and 66.2% in snails. There were no studies reporting the presence of metacercariae on plant carriers. Our study reconfirms that Fasciola spp. infections are widespread and highly prevalent in Southeast Asia, but it remains difficult to accurately assess the true occurrence of Fasciola spp. in absence of well-designed surveys covering all hosts. As next steps we propose to assess the occurrence of the infection across all actors involved in the transmission, to identify associated risk factors and to estimate the burden of the disease to support national and international decision makers. Fasciolosis is a foodborne disease that is caused by a parasitic worm. The disease affects both public and animal health worldwide. The transmission of Fasciola is complex and involves humans, animals and plants. The adult worms are observed in both humans and ruminants, while larval stages develop in freshwater snails. The infective larval stage attaches to aquatic plants. In recent decades, human fasciolosis has been considered an emerging disease in many regions of the world, including Southeast Asia. Although various studies surveyed Fasciola infection, an overview of existing knowledge on the distribution and prevalence of Fasciola across the different hosts is missing for this region. Yet, this is important to develop appropriate disease control measures. In this study, we systematically searched for literature on Fasciola spp. infection in Southeast Asia. Our study reconfirms that Fasciola is widespread in this region, but that it remains difficult to accurately assess the occurrence of parasite in the absence of well-designed surveys. A firm response to control fasciolosis requires both transdisciplinary and international partnerships. As next steps we propose to assess the occurrence of Fasciola spp. across all actors involved in the transmission, to identify associated risk factors and to estimate the disease burden to support national and international decision makers.

Abstract:The structural and ultrastructural modifications of the gonadotropic cells of goats were studied with an immunohistochemical method (peroxidase-antiperoxidase), in anoestrus, gestation and milk production. The cell type which predominates in anoestrus corresponds in its morphological characteristics to the classic FSH cells, and has two populations of homogeneous and electrodense secretory granules (141-244 nm and 244-400 nm in diameter), rough endoplasmic reticulum of flat cisternae and many large-sized lysosomes. During gestation secretory granules show a characteristic reduction in size and are less abundant; lysosomes are also more scarce and the endoplasmic reticulum shows a high development; dilated and intercommunicated cisternae show a slight electrodense content, characteristic of typical LH cells. During milk production the cells show an increase in the number of secretory granules which are still small, and an increase in the number of lysosomes which appear as in anoestrus.

Abstract:Objective: This study examined the effectiveness of an outpatient programme on the leisure lifestyle of high-functioning young adults living at home or at an independent setting. Methods: A pre-test–post-test control group design was used. Participants (n = 12) completed self-reports on (a) need for leisure support, (b) leisure engagement and (c) satisfaction with leisure lifestyle. The programme consisted of cognitive-behavioural techniques. Results: Significant within-group changes for the experimental group (n = 7) were found, indicating decreases in ‘need for leisure support’, more regular leisure engagement patterns and an increase in ‘leisure satisfaction’ following the programme. Between-group statistics reveal medium and large effect sizes for decreases in need for leisure support and a medium effect size for increase in ‘leisure satisfaction’, all in favour of the experimental group. Results regarding ‘leisure engagement’ were less clear. Conclusion: The preliminary programme was effective in improving leisure lifestyle and suggestions for future research are discussed.
Prevalence of bovine fasciolosis and direct financial losses in cattle slaughtered in Bamenda and Bafoussam abattoirs, Western Highlands, Cameroon

Abstract:Background: Bovine fascioliasis is a parasitic disease that affects cattle. It leads to direct and indirect great economic loss due to animal mortalities, growth retardation and expenditure on anthelmintics, reduction livestock productivity and essentially condemnation of infected liver by inspection service. The study was carried out to determine the seasonal prevalence and estimated financial losses of fascioliasis in cattle in the Western Highlands of Cameroon. Methodology: A total of 2167 cattle were selected. Later, the cattle, have being the carcasses, were dissected, and the livers were dissected and carefully examined for adult liver flukes. Faeces were collected immediately after the cattle were killed and examined using the formol-ether concentration technique. Condemned livers were weighted to estimate the financial losses using the average price of a kilogram of liver. Results: A total 428 of cattle were found with infected livers or egg in the faeces giving a total prevalence of 19.75%. Among the infected carcass, 18.64% had both the Fasciola eggs in the faeces and flukes in the liver while 1.10% had only flukes in the liver. Results revealed that prevalence of Fasciola spp. was significantly higher during the rainy season (23.48%) than 16% in the dry season (p = 0.00). A significantly (p = 0.000) higher prevalence was also observed in females (33.9%) than in males (13.1%). Age range showed significant (p = 0.000) influence with the animals of 8-10 years old recorded the highest prevalence of 39.3%. Furthermore, 433.1 kg of liver was condemned giving a direct financial loss of 1221,550 FCFA (2049.64 USD) and an annual financial loss due to liver condemnation estimated to 1814,775 (3045.01 USD). Conclusion: Findings of this study indicated that bovine fascioliasis is prevalent in cattle in the Western Highlands of Cameroon, and it leads to an important financial loss particularly in the rainy season.
Risk factors for prevalence of pig parasitoses in Mbeya Region, Tanzania

Abstract:A cross-sectional study was carried out to determine risk factors for prevalence of common endo- and ectoparasites of pigs kept by smallholder farmers in Mbozi and Mbeya (Rural) districts of Mbeya Region, in Tanzania. A total of 482 pigs from 220 households of 16 villages, eight in each district were randomly selected and examined. Prevalence of Taenia solium cysticercosis was 11.5%, gastrointestinal nematodes 63.7% and ectoparasites 21.2% based on Ag-ELISA, McMaster technique and full body searches/ear scrapings, respectively. Nematode eggs identified were strongyles (Oesophagostomum spp. and Trichostrongylus spp.), Ascaris suum, Trichuris suis and Strongyloides ransomi with prevalence of 57.4%, 17.5%, 5.3% and 1.1%, respectively. Four groups of ectoparasites were identified, i.e. lice (Haematopinus suis), ticks (Rhipicephalus spp., Amblyomma spp., Haemaphysalis spp. and Boophilus spp.), fleas (Ctenocephalides canis) and mites (Sarcoptes scabiei var. suis and Demodex phylloides), with prevalence of 19.1%, 2.1%, 0.4%, and 1.2%, respectively. Pigs in Mbeya (Rural) District had higher odds for porcine cysticercosis (OR=2.63, 95% CI: [1.22-5.55]). Poor pen hygiene and infrequent antiparasitic treatment were identified to be risk factors for prevalence of nematode infections (OR=1.95 [1.09-3.52] and OR=1.78 [1.06-2.94], respectively). The odds for high nematode burdens increased in cases of poor pen hygiene (OR=4.20 [2.54-6.62]) and poor feed quality (OR=3.7 [1.66-8.33]). Pigs not treated with antiparasitic drugs within the last three months had higher odds for ectoparasite (OR=4.0 [1.78-9.09]) and lice infestations (OR=8.33 [1.96-14.28]) than treated pigs. This study has shown that parasitoses constitute a major burden for smallholder pigs in Mbeya Region and major risk factors included infrequent antiparasitic treatment, poor pen hygiene and poor feed quality. Cost-effective intervention strategies are needed to improve pork production, secure pig welfare and ensure safe pork for human consumption.

Abstract:Fascioliasis, a prevalent disease in livestock globally, is primarily caused by the trematode parasites Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica. This parasitic infection leads to significant economic repercussions. In this study, our objective was to gain insight into the pathophysiological consequences of Fascioliasis in cattle through the evaluation of metabolic, oxidative stress, and histological parameters. A thorough investigation was carried out on the liver of 197 bovines after their slaughter, which unveiled the occurrence of Fascioliasis, with a prevalence rate of 13.2% observed. The bovine that were infected exhibited notable increase in serum transaminases (ALT, AST, and ALP) and malondialdehyde (MDA) and catalase (CAT) while the decrease in glutathione (GSH) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels. The lipid profile analysis of infected cattle revealed alterations in the cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Moreover, the histopathological examination revealed a range of hepatic lesions associated with Fascioliasis, including necrosis, inflammation, fibrosis, and proliferative alterations. The bile ducts also displayed distinct pathological changes, including hyperplasia, thickening, and edema, and harbored various developmental stages of Fasciola spp. highlighting the parasitic infestation's effects on the biliary system. These results highlight the serious effects of Fascioliasis on lipid metabolism and the oxidative damage that is induced in the livers of cattle. Thus, Fasciola infestation in bovine causes alteration in biochemical and antioxidant activities, which are considered as important factors in the diagnosis of Fascioliasis.

Abstract:Using molecular dynamics simulations, we show that a simple model of a glassy material exhibits the shear localization phenomenon observed in many complex fluids. At low shear rates, the system separates into a fluidized shear band and an unsheared part. The two bands are characterized by a very different dynamics probed by a local intermediate scattering function. Furthermore, a stick-slip motion is observed at very small shear rates. Our results, which open the possibility of exploring complex rheological behavior using simulations, are compared to recent experiments on various soft glasses.

Abstract:This study investigates the distribution of the Lymnaea (Radix) spp. in Pak Chong district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, northeast Thailand, where a vast cattle farming area is located and has a high prevalence of Fasciola spp. in the cattle. By random selection, 1,414 snails were collected from the natural and man-made ponds. The snails were recorded for morphology and processed for DNA isolation. The snail species were investigated by conventional PCR using a 16S rDNA-specific primer. The result demonstrated that all collected snails were R. (L.) rubiginosa. Moreover, the infection of Fasciola gigantica in the snails was investigated by PCR using a cytochrome c oxidase I (COX1)-specific primer. The results illustrated that the overall prevalence was 22.5% (318/1414), with the highest prevalence in the Nong Sa Rai subdistrict at 73.6% (81/110), which is the highest prevalence of Fasciola gigantica in the snail host that has ever been reported. The lowest prevalence existed in the Pong Ta Long subdistrict at 3.7% (4/109). Our results corresponded to the previous report on the Fasciola spp. infection in the cattle from this area, and the geographical analysis revealed that the most suspected factor would be the earth dam located in these subdistricts, where many animals live freely during the day. Our findings could be helpful for further parasite control and could trigger the study of the biology and associated factors in the future.

Abstract:Fasciolosis, caused by Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica, is an impediment to the livestock industry's expansion and has a massively negative socio-economic impact due to its widespread prevalence in livestock. It is a waterborne zoonosis affecting human populations in the countries where rural economies are associated with livestock rearing. Conventional diagnosis of Fasciola infection is done by detecting parasite eggs in the faeces of infected animals or by immunological methods. Accurate and quick immunodiagnosis of Fasciola infection in animals and humans is based on the detection of antibodies and specific antigens expressed in the prepatent stage of the parasite. Both molecular and serodiagnostic tests developed thus far have enhanced the reliability of Fasciola diagnosis in both man and animals but are not widely available in resource-poor nations. A pen-side diagnostic test based on a lateral flow assay or a DNA test like loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) would be simple, fast, and cost-effective, enabling clinicians to treat animals in a targeted manner and avoid the development of drug resistance to the limited flukicides. This review focuses on the recent advances made in the diagnosis of this parasite infection in animals and humans.

Abstract:Golebiewski (1897) stated that he had not seen a perfect recovery in any of fifty-nine cases. Cotton (1908) reported permanent disability in more than 50 per cent. of examined cases. In 1923 Magnuson reported that in his capacity as medical director of the Illinois Industrial Commission he had seen practically no case of fracture of the os calcis which did not result in from 30 to 75 per cent. disability of the foot. In 1923 also Satta stated that the disability from fractures of the os calcis might amount to as much as 80 per cent. He added that in Switzerland the insurance companies settle these cases on a basis of one-third total disability for a period of from two to four years. Malpas (1925) investigated the period of disability in a series of fractures at the David Lewis Northern Hospital. In most of these cases no definite attempt at reduction of the fractures was made. Malpas found that at that time the average period of disability was eleven months, and from a comparatively small number he concluded that irregularity of the subastragaloid joint was the deciding factor. Harding (1926) estimated the average duration of disability as five months. Otto J. Herman (1930) reported good result in 77 per cent. and a poor result in 22 per cent. Funston and Hall estimated the average disability period as six months. In 1931 Bartley wrote: " All surgeons of much industrial experience and all industrial compensation boards are unanimous in giving to this injury a very bad prognosis." His figures tend to show difference between the disability period of comminuted fractures which enter the subastragaloid joint and those which do not. He performs a subcutaneous tenotomy of the tendo Achillis and almost immediate subastragaloid fixation. He cites as a specially good result the case of a man who went back to his occupation in five months' time. It appears that the man could support the weight of his body upon the ball of the foot and also on the heel. But rather naively the surgeon remarks: " There was no defect in any of the motions of the foot or ankle except the loss of eversion and inversion." In 1932 Rudolph S. Reich stated that fractures of the calcaneus still resulted in permanent disability in a discouragingly large proportion of cases. He reported ten recent fractures, the treatment of which involved a subcutaneous elongation of the tendo Achillis, and six weeks later a subastragaloid fixation; the most fortunate of these patients was back at work in six and a half months. The average for most of the others was eight and a half months: one was not back at work after two years, and was then still complaining of pain. One was ten months before he went back. After two years three of them were on light work only. The curious point is that in nine old fracture cases there was a disability period following operation of about the same duration as the recent fracture cases-namely, six and a half months to ten months or a year. Nevertheless, the case of a man he had operated on eleven months previously was mentioned as being too recent to report. Wilson (1933) recorded the results of fifteen recent fractures, not all crush fractures into the joint, but did not indicate the disability period nor the amount of permanent incapacity. Forrester (1934), referring to the cost of this type of fracture, reported that before his newer type of treatment the average disability was from nine to sixteen months. Permanent disability was about 80 per cent. He claimed to have reduced the period of disability to four and a half months. He elongates the tendo Achillis and keeps the patients off their feet for some time. It is difficult to assess his results, because all his unselected cases have the'same period of disability-four months-and their functional end-result is 100 per cent. It is rather difficult to determine from his x-ray illustrations how bad the fractures were. Bohler does not denote his exact periods, but is reported'to have said that about 80 per cent. of his patients got back to heavy work, though this'may be'delayed for as long as two years. At a North American meeting one speaker was very illuminative; he remarked that he had treated fractures of the os calcis in every way that had been devised, and that he knew of no injury which produced as much disability. Abstract:Background: Fascioliasis, caused by Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica, is a zoonotic disease that significantly impacts public health in agricultural communities, particularly in Vietnam. This study aims to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding fascioliasis among residents in a rural community in Vietnam. Methodology/Principal Findings: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Dong Thanh commune, north-central Vietnam. A random sample of 621 households was selected, and 1,398 individuals participated in this study. All participants were interviewed for individual KAP to assess KAP regarding fascioliasis. In contrast, household heads were also interviewed about household practices, including life cycle knowledge, health-seeking behavior, water and sanitation practices, livestock and crop management, and dietary habits. Descriptive statistics were used to assess KAP, and generalized linear models were applied to examine the associations between socio-demographic variables and KAP. Awareness of fascioliasis was low, with 85% (1,193/1,398) of respondents reporting no prior knowledge. Detailed understanding of transmission, symptoms, and prevention was limited. Only 9% (124/1,398) of participants could accurately identify the symptoms, while 12% (168/1,398) were knowledgeable about preventive measures. A high percentage of households treated drinking water (99%, 613/619), and consumption of raw vegetables was widespread, with 93% (1,083/1,168) of individuals and 95% of households reporting this practice. Males were less likely to engage in non-risky practices than females (odds ratio: 0.696; 95% confidence interval: 0.591-0.819). Most households (85%, 522/617) sourced plants from their own land, and 67% (395/588) used animal manure as fertilizer. Conclusion/Significance: The study reveals significant gaps in knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to fascioliasis in Dong Thanh commune. There is a pressing need for targeted educational programs to enhance community awareness and promote safer practices to mitigate the risk of fascioliasis transmission. Future interventions should emphasize gender-specific education and broader community involvement to address these gaps effectively.

Abstract:Abstract Fasciolosis is a global food-borne disease affecting livestock. Management of the parasitic disease greatly depends on control and proper monitoring through early detection. Highly improved diagnostic methods to detect fasciolosis have been introduced. Limited research has paid attention to comparing four detection methods. The current study aimed to compare the detection of Fasciola in naturally infected slaughtered dairy cattle using four methods. Blood and fecal samples were collected from slaughtered cattle in three high throughput abattoirs in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, from 2020 through 2021. Postmortem liver examination was conducted to identify Fasciola spp. Then blood from condemned carcasses were analyzed using antibody ELISA to detect Fasciola antibodies, sedimentation technique to detect Fasciola eggs; and quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) to detect Fasciola DNA. A binomial Generalized Linear Model (GLM) and Cohen’s Kappa test were used to compare the detection rate and level of agreement across the four diagnostic methods. Significant differences (P = 0.0001) across the four diagnostic methods existed. Postmortem liver examination (94.5%) and qPCR (90.4%) compared ELISA (22.6%) and sedimentation (3.53%), respectively. There was a poor agreement between sedimentation and Ab-ELISA (kappa= -0.105, P = 0.128), sedimentation and postmortem liver examination (kappa= -0.054, P = 0.163); and qPCR and liver examination (kappa= -0.076, P = 0.341) In conclusion, results from the current study revealed significant differences among the four detection methods. The postmortem liver examination and qPCR were more reliable, sensitive, and accurate than ELISA and sedimentation.

Abstract:Fascioliasis causes high economic losses in livestock and underlies public health problems in rural areas, mainly of low-income countries. The increasing animal infection rates in Bangladesh were assessed, by focusing on host species, different parts of the country, and rDNA sequences. Fasciolid flukes were collected from buffaloes, cattle, goats and sheep from many localities to assess prevalences and intensities of infection. The nuclear rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region including ITS-1 and ITS-2 spacers was analyzed by direct sequencing and cloning, given the detection of intermediate phenotypic forms in Bangladesh. The 35.4% prevalence in goats and 55.5% in buffaloes are the highest recorded in these animals in Bangladesh. In cattle (29.3%) and sheep (26.8%) prevalences are also high for these species. These prevalences are very high when compared to lowlands at similar latitudes in neighboring India. The high prevalences and intensities appear in western Bangladesh where cross-border importation of animals from India occur. The combined haplotype CH3A of Fasciola gigantica widely found in all livestock species throughout Bangladesh fits its historical connections with the western Grand Trunk Road and the eastern Tea-Horse Road. The "pure" F. hepatica sequences only in clones from specimens showing heterozygotic positions indicate recent hybridization events with local "pure" F. gigantica, since concerted evolution did not yet have sufficient time to homogenize the rDNA operon. The detection of up to six different sequences coexisting in the cloned specimens evidences crossbreeding between hybrid parents, indicating repeated, superimposed and rapidly evolving hybridization events. The high proportion of hybrids highlights an increasing animal infection trend and human infection risk, and the need for control measures, mainly concerning goats in household farming management. ITS-1 and ITS-2 markers prove to be useful for detecting recent hybrid fasciolids. The introduction of a Fasciola species with imported livestock into a highly prevalent area of the other Fasciola species may lead to a high nucleotide variation in the species-differing positions in the extremely conserved fasciolid spacers. Results suggest that, in ancient times, frequent crossbreeding inside the same Fasciola species gave rise to the very peculiar characteristics of the present-day nuclear genome of both fasciolids.
Molecular detection of Anaplasma, Babesia, Theileria, and Trypanosoma infection in cattle and buffaloes in India

Abstract:Tick-borne pathogens pose a significant global threat, causing substantial economic losses to the dairy industry. In India, tropical theileriosis, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and trypanosomiasis are major hemo-parasitic diseases affecting bovines. A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence of hemo-parasites in different farms in India. PCR assays were employed to detect carrier status, using gene targets msp1b, tams1, rap-1, ama1, and ITS1 for A. marginale, T. annulata, B. bovis, B. bigemina, and Trypanosoma species, respectively. Out of the 578 apparently healthy animals screened, 30.45% (95% CI: 26.84-34.32%) were infected with at least one hemo-parasite. Cattle showed an overall positivity of 32.87%, while buffaloes had a prevalence of 15.19%, which was statistically significant (p < 0.001). Interestingly, prevalence was higher in indigenous cattle (47.81%) compared to cross-breeds (25.53%) and exotics (14.62%), with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001). The prevalence of hemo-parasites varied widely among the farms, ranging from 5.77 to 100%. A. marginale was the most prevalent parasite (23.70% of animals), followed by T. annulata (13.67%), Babesia species (1.90%), and Trypanosoma species (1.56%). Enzootic instability was observed in six of the eight farms, indicating a potential for future outbreaks. Co-infection was detected in 60 out of 176 animals positive for hemo-parasites, with 59 animals co-infected with A. marginale and T. annulata, and only one cross-breed cattle infected with both Anaplasma marginale and Babesia bigemina. The findings highlight the prevalence of hemo-parasites in farms, underscoring the need for whole-herd screening, treatment of infected animals, and improvement in farm management practices to prevent production losses caused by these pathogens. Abstract:AIM To develop ethnic-specific body mass index (BMI) cut-off points for overweight and obesity in girls from New Zealand's five major ethnic groups. METHODS A total of 1676 girls (41% European, 21% Pacific Island, 15% East Asian, 13% Māori, and 11% South Asian) aged 5-16 years participated in this study. BMI was determined from height and weight, and body fat percentage (%BF) was obtained from hand-to-foot bioelectrical impedance measurements. Using stepwise multiple regression, a series of ethnic-specific BMI cut-off points were developed that corresponded to the equivalent %BF of European girls at the BMI reference values provided by the International Obesity TaskForce (IOTF). RESULTS The adjusted cut-off points for overweight and obesity ranged from an average of 3.3 and 3.8 kg.m(-2) (respectively) lower than the IOTF standards in South Asian girls to 1.5 and 1.9 kg.m(-2) higher in Pacific Island girls. CONCLUSION We conclude that the ethnic-specific BMI cut-off points developed in this study are more appropriate than universal definitions of overweight and obesity for predicting excess adiposity in New Zealand girls.
