Abstract:Study Design: Prospective multi-center cohort study Objective: To explore the association between operative level and postoperative dysphagia after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). Summary of Background Data: Dysphagia is common following ACDF and has several risk factors including soft tissue edema. The degree of prevertebral soft tissue edema varies based upon the operative cervical level. However, the operative level has not been evaluated as a source of postoperative dysphagia. Methods: Adult patients undergoing elective ACDF were prospectively enrolled at three academic centers. Dysphagia was assessed using the Bazaz questionnaire, Dysphagia Short Questionnaire (DSQ), and Eating Assessment Tool-10 (EAT-10) preoperatively and at 2, 6, 12, and 24-weeks postoperatively. Patients were grouped based on inclusion of specific surgical levels in the fusion construct. Multivariable regression analyses were performed evaluating the independent effects of number of surgical levels and inclusion of each particular level on dysphagia symptoms. Results: A total of 130 patients were included. Overall, 24 (18.5%) patients had persistent postoperative dysphagia at 24 weeks and were older, female, and less likely to be drink alcohol. There was no difference in operative duration or dexamethasone administration. Patients with persistent dysphagia were significantly more likely to have C4-C5 included in the fusion construct (62.5% vs. 34.9%, P =0.024) but there were no differences based on inclusion of other levels. On multivariable regression, inclusion of C3-C4 or C6-C7 were associated with more severe EAT-10 (β:9.56, P =0.016 and β:8.15, P =0.040) and DSQ (β:4.44, P =0.023 and (β:4.27, P =0.030) at 6 weeks. At 12-weeks, C3-C4 fusion was also independently associated with more severe dysphagia (EAT-10 β:4.74, P =0.024). Conclusion: The location of prevertebral soft tissue swelling may impact the duration and severity of patient-reported dysphagia outcomes at up to 24 weeks postoperatively. In particular, inclusion of C3-C4 and C4-C5 into the fusion may be associated with dysphagia severity.

A comparison of dysphagia rates between long-segment anterior versus posterior cervical fusion

Abstract:Objective: The goal of this study was to compare rates of dysphagia and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) following long-segment (≥ 3 levels) anterior cervical spinal fusion (ACF) and posterior cervical spinal fusion (PCF) at 3 and 12 months postoperatively. PROs were also compared for patients with dysphagia versus those without dysphagia. Methods: A prospectively collected quality improvement database was used to identify patients who had a long-segment cervical spinal fusion. Cohorts were divided into ACF and PCF groups. Eating Assessment Tool-10 scores and PROs were obtained for all patients preoperatively and at 3 and 12 months postoperatively to compare. Multivariate analysis was also performed to evaluate risk factors for dysphagia. Results: A total of 132 patients met the inclusion criteria, 77 of whom had undergone ACF and 55 of whom had undergone PCF. Dysphagia rates between ACF and PCF cohorts were similar at baseline (13.0% vs 18.2%, p = 0.4). New-onset dysphagia rates were also comparable at 3-month follow-up (39.7% vs 23.1%, p = 0.08) and 12-month follow-up (32.6% vs 32.4%, p > 0.99). Patients who underwent PCF had worse Neck Disability Index (NDI) scores at 3 months than did patients with ACF (13.67 ± 9.49 vs 10.55 ± 6.24, respectively; p = 0.03). There were significantly higher NDI scores for patients with dysphagia at 3 months in both the ACF and PCF groups and at 12 months for those in the PCF group. Analogously, EuroQol-5 Dimensions scores were worse for patients with dysphagia; however, this was only significant for patients in the ACF group at 3 months. There were no significant risk factors for the development of dysphagia found on multivariate analysis. Conclusions: Similar rates and severity of dysphagia were seen following ACF and PCF at 3- and 12-month follow-up. This suggests that long-term dysphagia following cervical fusion surgery may be due to structural changes from the fusion rather than the surgical approach. However, the ACF cohort was significantly younger, and this may have partially accounted for the findings. PROs were also compared for patients with and without dysphagia, demonstrating worsened outcomes in some domains for patients who presented with dysphagia at 3- and 12-month follow-up. This suggests that dysphagia may be associated with a decreased quality of life after cervical fusion.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Prior studies comparing anterior versus posterior approaches for multilevel cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) are limited by the heterogeneity of levels operated. METHODS: The prospective QOD CSM cohort was queried for fusions across only three interspaces. Surgeries crossing the cervicothoracic junction were excluded. The cohort was divided into anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) and posterior laminectomy-and-fusion. 24-month patient-reported outcomes were compared. RESULTS: Of 199 patients (123 ACDF, 76 posterior fusions), 24-month follow-up rates were similar (ACDF: 90.2% vs. 92.1%, p = 0.67). Preoperatively, ACDF were younger (60.8 ± 10.2 vs. 65.0 ± 10.3 yr, p < 0.01), used more private insurance (56.1% vs. 36.8%, p = 0.02), were more often employed (39.8% vs. 22.8%, p = 0.04), and independently ambulatory (14.6% vs. 31.6%, p 0.05). ACDF had shorter hospitalizations (1.6 vs. 3.9 days, p < 0.01) and less non-routine discharge (7.3% vs. 22.8%, p < 0.01) but higher postoperative dysphagia (13.5% vs. 3.5%, p = 0.049). Both groups demonstrated improvements in all outcomes at 24 months (p < 0.05). In multivariable analyses, ACDF was associated with the greatest 24-month NASS Satisfaction (NASS 1)(69.4% vs. 53.7%, OR = 2.44, p = 0.02). Otherwise, the cohorts shared similar 24-month patient-reported outcomes. There were no differences in 3-month readmission (4.1% ACDF vs. 3.9% posterior fusion, p = 0.97) and 24-month reoperation rate (13.5% ACDF vs. 18.6% posterior fusion, p = 0.36). CONCLUSIONS: In a cohort limited to 3-level surgeries, ACDF was associated with reduced blood loss, shorter lengths of hospitalization, and higher routine discharge rates; however, posterior cervical fusion resulted in less dysphagia. After controlling for confounders, the ACDF cohort had a significantly higher odds of maximum satisfaction. Patients should be counseled on the risks and benefits of each approach, given relatively comparable outcomes.

Abstract:Some details of the uhrastructure of the syncytial stomach cell of the rotifer have been presented by Lansing (1). He has described the luminal membrane of the stomach cell as consisting of a thick reticular layer beneath a unit membrane 60 A thick. He noted a similarity between this layer and the terminal web of the intestinal epithelium. Lansing further observed goblet-shaped pockets in the gastric luminal surface. Ingested colloidal gold particles were observed in these pockets and in cytoplasmic food vacuoles which led Lansing to postulate that the gold particles entered the cell cytoplasm through the gobletlike structures. This communication will present details of a fine "crystalline" organization of a region immediately surrounding the gobleflike projection. A Philodina species was selected from a mixed rotifer culture obtained from Turtox Products General Biological Supply House, Inc. Organisms were fixed in a contracted state by 1% osmium tetroxide buffered to pH 7.5 in McEwen's saline (2). Some of these rotifers were prefixed in 6% glutaraldehyde and postfixed in osmium tetroxide. In order to fix rotifers in an extended state, some animals were "paralyzed" in 0.5% neosynephrine (3), and subsequently fixed in 2 % unbuffered osmium tetroxide. It has been somewhat more difficult to obtain details of ultrastructure with the last procedure as compared to the former methods; however, fixation in extension is desirable for orientation purposes. All fixed specimens were dehydrated in ethanol and embedded in Maraglas (4). Thin sections were cut on a Porter Blum microtome, stained with lead citrate (5), and examined in an RCA EMU3E. Fig. 1 depicts an oblique section through the lumen of the syncytial stomach of a rotifer. The lumen of the gut contains cilia, and it is bounded by a unit membrane (Fig. 2) as described by Lansing (1). Beneath the membrane is a relatively homogeneous region which stains rather lightly. In cross-sections of the gut (Fig. 2), this region appears finely granular or amorphous, whereas in longitudinal sections (Fig. 1) it appears to consist of thin fibers approximately 30 A in diameter. In keeping with the terminology employed by Lansing (1), this area will be called the terminal web. Scattered within the terminal web are the roughly cylindrical "goblet-shaped" bodies described by Lansing (1). Their appearance is somewhat variable. Some appear to open into the stomach lumen (Fig. 1), whereas others appear separated from the lumen by one or two unit membranes (Fig. 2). Still others appear to be extruding small vacuoles into the syncytial cytoplasm by pinocytosis, these vacuoles apparently being food vacuoles, also described by Lansing (1) (Fig. 2). Surrounding the goblet-shaped vacuoles is a very densely staining cylindrical collar of material which, at high magnification, can be resolved into elements periodically spaced at 50 to 150 A (Figs.

Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the related factors of dysphagia following anterior cervical decompression and fusion.Method:490 cases undergoing anterior discectomy decompression and fusion from October 2002 to October 2004 were followed up,of these,there were 306 males and 184 females,with the mean age of 47.2 years(range,12 to 76 years).Of these 490 patients,415 had cervical spondylosis,43 had cervical fracture or dislocation,22 had cervical disc herniation,8 had cervical spine tumor,and 2 had cervical spine tuberculosis.490 patients were reviewed retrospectively postoperatively about their swallow dysfunction(objective)and swallow comfortlessness(subjective).All cases with dysphgia accepted dexamethasone used intravenously and correspondant therapy.Result:490 cases were followed up,and 96(19.6%)of them had postoperative dysphagia which lasted for 3 weeks to 2 years.Of 96 patients with dysphagia,with the mean age of 57.6 yeas(range,38 to 63 years).Of 96 patients with dysphagia,89 cases had titanium plates placement,7 cases had intervertebral cages placement.Those without plates or cages placement and those with artificial disc placement had no postoperative dysphagia.Female,elder and titanium plates planting was associated with postoperative dysphagia.After 14.2 months follow-up,90 cases(93.7%)with dysphagia cured or improved,while 6 cases had no improvement.Conclusion:Postoperative dysphagia is a common complication associated with anterior cervical discectomy and fusion,the causemay be multifactory.As a result,clinicians should pay more attention to this complication and make proper intervention.

Abstract:STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.OBJECTIVE: To characterize the relation between postoperative soft tissue swelling and the development of chronic dysphagia after anterior cervical spine surgery. Chronic dysphagia was defined as dysphagia that persists more than 1 year.SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Dysphagia is commonly reported in the early postoperative period after anterior cervical spine surgery. Although prevertebral soft tissue swelling (STS) has been hypothesized as a potential risk factor for development of dysphagia, no studies have assessed STS' relation to dysphagia that persists more than 1 year.METHODS: Sixty-seven patients who underwent elective anterior cervical spine surgery from 2008 to 2011 and completed a dysphagia questionnaire were included in the study. Prevertebral STS was measured at the caudal endplates of C2 and C6 on plain lateral cervical radiographs preoperatively, immediately after, and 6 and 12 weeks postoperatively. The presence and severity of chronic dysphagia was assessed using the Bazaz-Yoo Dysphagia Score. The prevalence of dysphagia in relation to STS was evaluated using the Wilcoxon rank-sum test.RESULTS: By 6 weeks after surgery, 89% of STS at C2 and 97% of STS at C6 had resolved, as compared with preoperative values. The overall dysphagia prevalence in our cohort was 73%, with 48% reporting no or mild symptoms. Moderate symptoms were present in 39% and severe symptoms were present in 13% of the patients. There was no relation between STS measured at all time points compared with the development of chronic dysphagia. Dysphagia did trend toward significance with higher cervical fusions (C4 and above) and as the number of levels fused increased, but STS did not seem to influence this.CONCLUSION: Postoperative STS is a self-limiting process. The magnitude of STS during the postoperative period does not seem to influence the development of chronic dysphagia.

The results of our study indicated that the rate of dysphagia at 0, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months after surgery was 20%, 5.4%, 2.4%, 1.1%, and 0.4%, respectively. Our results showed that age (58.8 years old), BMI (27.3kg/m(2)), course of disease (11.6 months), operation time (103.2 min), blood loss (151.6 mL), incision length (9.1 cm), cervical circumference (46.8 cm), angle of C2 to C7 (15.3 degrees), cervical circumference/height of C2 to C7 (4.8), preoperative VAS (7.5), and ODI (0.6) in dysphagia group were significantly higher than those (52.0, 24.6, 8.6, 88.2, 121.6, 8.6, 42.3, 12.6, 3.7, 5.6, and 0.4, respectively) in nondysphagia group; however, height of C2 to C7 (9.9 vs 11.7cm) and preoperative JOA (8.3 vs 10.7) had opposite trend between 2 groups. We could also infer that female, smoking, diabetes, ossification of posterior longitudinal ligament, ACCDF, multilevel surgery, and superior fusion segment including C2 to C3 or C6 to C7 were the risk factors for dysphagia after surgery immediately. However, till 2 years after surgery, only 2 risk factors, smoking and diabetes, could slow rehabilitation of dysphagia. Many factors could significantly increase rate of dysphagia after anterior cervical surgery. Operation time as a vital factor markedly increases immediate postoperative dysphagia and smoking, as the most important factor, lower recovery of dysphagia. Further study is needed to prove if these factors could influence dysphagia.

ARCH FORMS AMONG DIFFERENT ANGLE CLASSIFICATIONS A - STUDY

Abstract:The aim of the study was to find out the type of arch form amongst different Angle classifications attending the orthodontic department of Sardar Begum Dental College and Hospital, Peshawar. Consideration of the arch form is of paramount importance, because it is imperative that the arch form should be examined before embarking upon the treatment as this gives valuable information about the position into which teeth can be moved if they are to be stable following treatment. It was a prospective cross-sectional study carried out on a total of 120 individuals irrespective of gender having Angle’s class I, II or III occlusion. The results revealed that the most prevalent arch form among the individuals of the sample was of the tapered variety i.e., 49.2% irrespective of the Angle classification while ovoid and square arch forms were 2 nd and 3 rd in the prevalence order i.e., 29.2% and 21.2% respectively. The study emphasizes that consideration should be given to the arch form specific for the particular individual.
Effect of the Presence and Type of Plate Augmentation on Postoperative Dysphagia Among Adult Patients Undergoing Elective Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion for Spondylosis: A Randomized Trial

Abstract:Objective: To determine the effect of anterior plating on postoperative dysphagia (POD) among adult patients undergoing elective anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) for cervical spondylosis and determine the potential role of demographic and clinical characteristics in the development of POD. Methods: Consecutive adults undergoing an elective, single-level, ACDF were randomly assigned to receive a stand-alone CoRoent Cage or a CoRoent Cage with a Helix, or HelixMini plate. Patients with a history of cervical spine surgery were excluded. M. D. Anderson Dysphagia Inventory and Bazaz questionnaires were completed at regular intervals for 12 months postoperatively. Results: Twenty-five patients were recruited over a 2-year period, with 8 allocated to receive a stand-alone cage, 5 to receive a cage and Helix Mini plate, and 12 to receive a cage and Helix plate. The POD rate was 68% at 48 hours, before falling to 16% at 6 and 12 months. A longer retraction time was observed in the Helix plate group compared to the stand-alone cage group (7.88; 95% confidence interval, 0.12-15.63; p = 0.046), although there was no difference in the incidence or severity of dysphagia between cohorts at any timepoint. With the exception of body mass index, there was no difference in patients with and without dysphagia, and each of the interventions was equally efficacious with respect to clinical and radiological endpoints. Conclusion: Dysphagia is a common consequence of ACDF and, while the placement of a large plate results in longer retraction time, it was not associated with higher rates of dysphagia. Further research is required to identify both patient-specific and surgical contributors to this complication.

Abstract:Objective: Preoperative tracheal retraction exercise (TRE) to minimize the occurrence of postoperative oropharyngeal dysphagia after anterior cervical spine surgery. Methods: A total of 220 patients admitted for elective anterior cervical spine surgery from January 2013 to December 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were allocated into two groups: TRE group and control group (without TRE). Modified dysphagia scoring system (MDSS) was used for evaluating the presence and severity of dysphagia symptoms at 1 week and 1, 3, and 6 months after surgery. Demographics such as age, gender, smoking, type of procedure, number of levels operated, duration of surgery, intraoperative blood loss, and instrumentation were analyzed. The clinical outcomes in both groups were compared with Neck Disability Index (NDI), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for arm and neck pain, and Odom's criteria for global outcome. Results: In the first week postoperatively, 86 patients (39.1%) developed dysphagia, which decreased to 72 (32.7%), 5 (2.3%), and 4 (1.8%) after 1, 3, and 6 months, respectively. The patients who received the TRE prior to surgery had significantly better MDSS scores ( p = 0.032 for second-level, 0.022 for third-level, and 0.009 for fourth-level fusions) than control group patients who did not receive TRE at the first week of surgery. At the 1-month follow-up, the followed-up patients for second- to fourth-level fusions in the TRE group had improved MDSS scores than those in the control group ( p = 0.041 for second-level, 0.025 for third-level, and 0.0011 for fourth-level fusions). MDSS scores showed no significant difference between both the groups at 1 and 3 months postoperatively for single level anterior cervical fusion. NDI and VAS scores didn't yield any significant difference. Global outcome by Odom's criteria was 88.6%. Conclusion: Preoperative TRE can significantly reduce the occurrence of postoperative dysphagia after ACDF surgery. During follow-up, the incidence of postoperative dysphagia was significantly lower and had resolved at 3 months in all patients.
The Impact of the Difference in O-C2 Angle in the Development of Dysphagia after Occipitocervical Fusion: a Simulation Study in Normal Volunteers Combined with a Case-Control Study

Abstract:BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Dysphagia has been recognized as one of the most serious complications after occipitocervical fusion (OCF), and the difference between postoperative and preoperative O-C2 angle (dO-C2A) was proposed to be an indicator in predicting and preventing dysphagia. Therefore, to prevent postoperative dysphagia, previous studies recommend that surgeons should correct the O-C2 angle (O-C2A) during surgery if the occipitocervical alignment was in an excessively flexed position. However, until now, there was no explicit indicator of the condition in which surgeons should adjust the patient's O-C2A during surgery. PURPOSE: One of the purposes of this study was to explore the threshold of dO-C2A between dysphagia and normal swallowing by a simulation study. The other aim was to evaluate the validity of the threshold of dO-C2A in predicting dysphagia after OCF via a case-control study. STUDY DESIGN: This is a simulation study combined with a retrospective case-control study. PATIENT SAMPLE: Thirty volunteers were enrolled in the simulation study. Thirty-four consecutive patients who underwent OCF between September 2011 and September 2016 were included in the case-control study. OUTCOME MEASURES: The outcome measures included O-C2A, C2-7 angle (C2-7A), atlantodental interval (ADI), the narrowest oropharyngeal airway space (nPAS), the rate of change in dnPAS (%dnPAS), and the prevalence of postoperative dysphagia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the simulation study, each volunteer received two lateral x-rays of their cervical spine in neutral position and dysphagia position, respectively. We compared the radiographic parameters in neutral and dysphagia positions. The cumulative frequency diagram of dO-C2A in the dysphagia position was analyzed to identify the threshold of dO-C2A in the development of dysphagia. In the case-control study, these 34 patients were divided into two groups according to the threshold of dO-C2A identified in the simulation study. The impact of radiographic parameters on nPAS was analyzed. The prevalence of postoperative dysphagia between the two groups was compared to evaluate the validity of the threshold of dO-C2A in predicting dysphagia after OCF. RESULTS: In the simulation study. the mean O-C2A and nPAS in the dysphagia position were significantly smaller than in the neutral position (p<.05). There was no significant difference between the mean C2-7A in the neutral and dysphagia positions (p>.05). There was a significant positive correlation between dO-C2A and dnPAS (p<.05). A dO-C2A of -5 degrees delineated the threshold between normal swallowing and dysphagia. In the case-control study, multiple regression analysis showed that dO-C2A was the only significant variable correlated with dnPAS (beta=0.769, p<.001). Among the reviewed 34 patients, the incidence of dysphagia was 17.6% (6/34) at 2 weeks after surgery and decreased over time to 11.8% (4 of 34) at the last follow-up. There was also a significant positive correlation between the dO-C2A and dnPAS (p<.05). The prevalence of dysphagia after (X:F in patients with dO-C2A<-5 degrees was as high as 66.7% (6/9). However, there was no patient suffering from dysphagia in patients with dO-C2A-5 degrees. CONCLUSION: The present study showed that the dO-C2A should be a key factor in the development of postoperative dysphagia after OCF. A dO-C2A of -5 degrees could be the threshold between dysphagia and normal swallowing. Furthermore, to avoid dysphagia, surgeons should correct the O-C2A just before the final occipitocervical fixation if the checked dO-C2A during surgery is less than -5 degrees. (C) 2018 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Prevertebral soft-tissue swelling (PSTS) after anterior cervical diskectomy and fusion (ACDF) is known to be influenced by several factors. We considered the effect of lateral deviation on the traction force and attempted to find a relationship with the PSTS. This study was designed to evaluate the preoperative lateral deviation of the hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage and its effect on PSTS, airway collapse, and clinical outcomes after ACDF. METHODS: Preoperative lateral deviations of the hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage at the superior cornu and inferior cornu were measured. To assess the effect of lateral deviation, patients who underwent 1 or 2 level ACDF with the left-sided approach were divided into a deviation group (left-sided deviation >5 mm or >10 mm) and a nondeviation group (left-sided deviation <5 mm or <10 mm). Difference of preoperative and postoperative PSTS (dPSTS), airway collapse, dysphagia score, and Neck Disability Index were compared between the 2 groups. RESULTS: Lateral deviation was measured in 290 patients, and 145 were enrolled to assess the effect of lateral deviation. Left-sided deviation was more common than right-sided deviation in all 3 structures (the hyoid bone, superior cornu, and inferior cornu of the thyroid cartilage). The deviation group demonstrated a significantly larger dPSTS at the C3 and C4 levels, more airway collapse at the C4 level, and a higher dysphagia score. There was no significant difference in the Neck Disability Index between the 2 groups. Lateral deviation significantly correlated with dPSTS (C3, C4, C5, and C6 levels) and airway collapse (C3 and C4 levels). CONCLUSION: A left-sided deviation of more than 5 mm of the hyoid bone or thyroid cartilage discouraged the left-sided approach for ACDF because of the aggravation of dPSTS, airway collapse, and dysphagia postoperatively.

Abstract:Introduction: Patients with a prolonged preoperative symptom duration (PSD) in the setting of cervical disk herniation (DH) may suffer inferior outcomes after surgical intervention. Comparison between anterior cervical diskectomy and fusion (ACDF) versus cervical disk arthroplasty (CDA) in this at-risk population has not yet been conducted. Methods: Patients undergoing ACDF or CDA for DH with a PSD > 180 days were selected. Six-week (6W) and final follow-up (FF) patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) as well as magnitude of postoperative improvements (∆PROM) were compared between cohorts using multivariable linear regression. Intercohort achievement rates of minimal clinically important difference (MCID) in each PROM were compared. Results: Seventy-seven of 190 patients were in the CDA cohort. 6W Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System-Physical Function (PROMIS-PF) was superior in the CDA cohort. The ACDF cohort demonstrated notable improvements in the 6W Neck Disability Index (NDI), visual analog scale-neck pain (VAS-N), visual analog scale-arm pain (VAS-A), and 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). The CDA cohort demonstrated notable improvements in 6W PROMIS-PF, NDI, VAS-N, and VAS-A. FF VAS-A was better in the CDA cohort. The ACDF cohort demonstrated notable improvements in FF PROMIS-PF, NDI, VAS-N, and VAS-A. The CDA cohort demonstrated notable improvements in all FF PROMs. ∆PROM-6W in PROMIS-PF was greater in the CDA cohort. Conclusion: Patients with prolonged PSD due to cervical DH demonstrated notable improvements in physical function, disability, pain, and mental health regardless of fusion versus arthroplasty techniques. Accounting for demographic variations, patients undergoing CDA demonstrated a greater magnitude of improvement and superior scores in physical function at the first postoperative follow-up. Rates of clinically tangible improvements in PROMs did not markedly vary by surgical procedure. Patients undergoing CDA may perceive greater early improvements to physical function compared with patients undergoing ACDF for prolonged PSD due to DH.

Abstract:Superamphiphobic nanofibrous membranes exhibiting robust water/oil proof and breathable performances were prepared by the combination of a novel synthesized fluorinated polyurethane (FPU) containing a terminal perfluoroalkane segment and incorporated SiO(2) nanoparticles (SiO(2) NPs). By employing the FPU/SiO(2) NPs incorporation, the hybrid membranes possess superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 165° and superoleophobicity with an oil contact angle of 151°. Surface morphological studies have indicated that the wettability of resultant membranes could be manipulated by tuning the surface composition as well as the hierarchical structures. The quantitative hierarchical roughness analysis using N(2) adsorption method has confirmed a major contribution of SiO(2) NPs on enhancing the porous structure, and a detailed correlation between the fractal dimension and amphiphobicity is proposed. Furthermore, a designed concept test shows that the as-prepared membranes could load 1.5 kg water or oil at the same time maintained an extremely high air permeability of 2 L min(-1), suggesting their use as promising materials for a variety of potential applications in protective clothing, bioseparation, water purification, tissue engineering, microfluidic systems, etc., and also provided new insight into the design and development of functional hybrid membranes based on FPU.
