Abstract:The photoelectrochemical (PEC) method possesses energy-efficient wastewater treatment by harnessing solar energy. The cost-effective and eco-friendly PEC method reduces the reliability of conventional energy sources. This work established the approach for textile wastewater treatment (TWW) along with hydrogen production. The WO 3 /BiVO 4 /Ni-PbS photoanode was prepared by optimizing Ni atomic (at.) concentration by a new approach showing a good photocurrent of 5.56 mA cm −1 in 0.5 M Na 2 SO 3 + PBS electrolyte using an external bias of 1.23 V vs. RHE at 7 pH and simultaneously 99.9 % total organic carbon (TOC) removal with 52.2 μmol cm −2 in 70 min time hydrogen was produced. The presence of sulfate and chloride ions helps degrade the TWW in the presence of Na 2 SO 3 + PBS electrolyte. The contribution of reactive chlorine species (RCS) (Cl · , Cl 2 · , ClO · , ClO 3 ·- , ClO - /HClO), SO 4 ·2 , and · OH in TOC removal was studied by the mechanism. Powdered BiVO 4 has been utilized for testing photocatalytic degradation. Finally, better results were found with the EC-PEC process and PC-PEC process which is useful for chromium removal enhancement in the TWW.

Abstract:Wastewater from many sectors that contains hazardous organic pollutants exacerbates environmental contamination. Consequently, outstanding photocatalytic substances that can successfully degrade hazardous substances are needed to provide pollution-free water. From this perspective, zinc oxide/g-C3N4-based composites are desirable due to their low cost, strong reactivity, and environmental friendliness. So, in the current investigation, sequences of Mn/g-C3N4/ZnO (Mn/GZ) and Ni/g-C3N4/ZnO (Ni/GZ) nanocomposites (NCs) containing different concentrations (wt.%) of g-C3N4 were made via the co-precipitation process. The chemical makeup and morphological characteristics of the produced composites were ascertained via the techniques of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), photoluminescence (PL), and UV spectrophotometry. Methyl orange (MO) and Eriochrome Black T (EBT) dyes were used as target pollutants to assess the composite materials' photocatalytic effectiveness. Compared to g-C3N4/ZnO and g-C3N4, the produced Mn/GZ and Ni/GZ NCs displayed better photocatalytic activity. The improved photocatalytic efficiency of the Ni/GZ and Mn/GZ NCs might be credited to synergistic interactions at the g-C3N4 and ZnO interface that result in a more efficient separation and conduction of photo-induced charges. Furthermore, the Ni/Mn atoms act as the facilitators to improve electron–hole pair separation and conduction in NCs. The nanocomposites were found to be incredibly stable, with consistently high dye decoloration efficiency over five catalytic cycles. Hence, Ni/GZ and Mn/GZ could potentially be very effective and adaptable photocatalysts for the photocatalytic decoloration of wastewater pollutants.

Abstract:Water pollution, exacerbated by industrialization, poses severe threats to aquatic ecosystems and human health, particularly due to persistent organic pollutants like dyes. To mitigate this issue, the development of effective and sustainable water treatment technologies is essential. This study presents the synthesis of a novel bismuth vanadate (BVO)/vermiculite (Vt) adsorption-photocatalytic self-cycling composite using a simple hydrothermal method. The composite's Z -scheme heterojunction structure, along with the introduction of surface oxygen vacancies, significantly reduces electron-hole recombination and enhances charge separation. These modifications lead to a 1.64-fold increase in adsorption capacity compared to Vt and a 6.4-fold improvement in photocatalytic efficiency over BVO. The material maintained a 76 % removal efficiency after five usage cycles and demonstrated high efficacy in methylene blue (MB) solutions, even at concentrations up to 300 mg/L. Moreover, the composite displayed stable performance under repeated use and in high-pollutant environments, highlighting its durability and practicality. These characteristics underscore its strong potential for widespread application in environmental remediation and sustainable water resource management, offering an innovative solution to the global challenge of water pollution.

Abstract:Researchers have focused on deriving environmentally benign materials from biomass waste and converting them into value-added materials. In this study, cellulosic crystals derived from sugarcane bagasse (SCB) are augmented with magnetite (M) nanoparticles. Following the co-precipitation route, the composite was prepared, and then the mixture was subjected to a green microwave solvent-less technique. Various mass ratios of SCB:M (1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 5:1, and 1:2) were prepared and efficiently utilized as photocatalysts. To look at the structural and morphological properties of the prepared samples, X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and elemental analysis were used to describe the composite fibers. SCB:M augmented with H2O2 as a Fenton reaction was used to eliminate Reactive blue 19 (RB19) from polluted water and was compared with pristine SCB and M. Additionally, the response surface methodology (RSM) statistically located and assessed the optimized parameters. The optimal operating conditions were recorded at pH 2.0 and 3:1 SCB: M with 40 mg/L and 100 mg/L of hydrogen peroxide. However, the temperature increase inhibits the oxidation reaction. The kinetic modeling fit showed the reaction following the second-order kinetic model with an energy barrier of 98.66 kJ/mol. The results show that such photocatalyst behavior is a promising candidate for treating textile effluent in practical applications.

Abstract:The search for a fast and efficient process to treat water contaminated with pharmaceutical substances is ongoing and societally required due to the impact on the environment and human health. In this work, a photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) system, coupling visible-light photocatalysis and electrocatalysis with suspended and immobilised graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), has been proved as a feasible alternative for the simultaneous degradation of a model persistent drug, viz. diclofenac (DCF), and the production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). A comprehensive study of the variables influencing PEC (visible-light emitting diode radiation and g-C3N4 load) is conducted. Moreover, the optimisation of the PEC process was accomplished through a Central Composite Face-Centred design of experiments, focusing on g-C3N4 load, immersed electrode area, and applied current intensity as key variables. From this CCFC design, the determined optimal working conditions were 0.76 g/L of g-C3N4, an electrode area of 6.38 cm2 and 58 mA of current intensity, leading to 92% DCF removal and 0.3 mM of produced H2O2 in a short period (5 min), which were experimentally validated (deviation lower than 1%). To overcome the drawbacks of operating with the g-C3N4 catalyst as powder, the synthesis of a novel material (g-C3N4@PAN) by electrospinning was carried out using polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and g-C3N4 as precursors to generate nanofibres. Characterisation techniques (Scanning Electron Microscopy, Diffuse Reflectance Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy, and N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms) of the nanofibres allowed confirming a proper immobilisation assessing that the synthesis route is straightforward and enables obtaining physicochemical properties similar to those of g-C3N4 itself. The catalytic activity and reusability of g-C3N4@PAN for PEC removal of DCF were validated by operating up to 5 cycles in batch conditions without losing efficiency, and then confirmed by operating the PEC system under continuous flow mode. All results remark the great potential of the developed PEC system with a g-C3N4@PAN structure as a supported catalyst to work efficiently in different modes of operation.

Abstract:Since a large amount of waste polyester-cotton blended textiles can cause environmental pollution problems, it is crucial to develop sustainable technology for recycling textile wastes and producing value-added products. In this research, regenerated cellulose and polyester were obtained from the polyester-cotton jean wastes by a sustainable process through the selective dissolving of cellulose fibers using an ionic liquid (ILs), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Bmim]Cl). We developed an environmentally benign decoloration approach without the bleaching or leaching processes. Instead, cellulose, polyester, and ILs were recycled from the selective degradation of indigo carmine (IC) or indigo dye in the dye/ILs solution using the Bi 11 VO 19 photocatalyst without impairing the dissolution capability of ILs. The selective decoloration of dye solution extracted from waste textiles involves interactions among photocatalysts, colorants, fibers, and media (ILs). The changes of dye and ILs molecules during the photocatalysis reaction were analyzed. FTIR and Raman spectra of the recycled ILs reveal that the chemical structure of ILs remains unchanged after the photocatalytic decoloration process. The ILs and photocatalysts can be recycled for repeated production of regenerated cellulose from waste jeans. Graphical abstract Download : Download high-res image (166KB) Download : Download full-size image The δ-Bi 2 O 3 -structural Bi 11 VO 19 nanoparticles with the average size of ∼70 nm were fabricated through the Pechini method for a possible photocatalytic application. The crystal structure was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and the structural refinement. The as-synthesized sample was also characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), UV–vis spectroscopy and photoluminescence measurements. The experimental results demonstrate that Bi 11 VO 19 nanoparticles have an efficient visible light absorption with band-gap energy of 2.23 eV. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the photodegradation of the methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation ( λ > 420 nm) as a function of time. All the results indicate that Bi 11 VO 19 could be a potential photocatalyst driven by visible-light. The effective photocatalytic activity was discussed on the base of the crystal structure characteristic. In this study, new magnetic nanocomposites with different molar ratios of zinc oxide-zinc sulfide were synthesized together with photocatalysts @ZnO and ZnS. The photocatalytic behavior of these hybrid nanocomposites under visible light and ultraviolet light was investigated to remove methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO) dyes, real textile and carton effluents. After studies, the best active photocatalyst in both visible light and ultraviolet light is @ZnO–ZnS (ZnO/ZnS: 0.75:0.25), which displayed the best performance in the ultraviolet region. According to the TEM, the average particle size for @ZnO–ZnS (ZnO/ZnS: 0.75:0.25) is between 10 and 30 nm. Zeta potential (DLS) showed that the charge on the photocatalyst surface is negative at most pHs. PL analysis confirmed that the amount of hole-electron recombination in the optimal photocatalyst is less than @ZnO and @ZnS. Also, based on kinetic studies, the rate constant for removing azo dyes such as MO and MB was 0.0186 and 0.0171 min −1 , respectively. It is worth noting that in addition to the novelty of the synthesized photocatalysts, the UV and visible lamps used in this research are inexpensive, durable, and highly efficient. In this study, three types of electrodes based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/ polyaniline (PANI) are synthesized and their effects on the electro-oxidation of methanol (MeOH) are investigated. Composite electrodes of PVA/PANI-Ni, PVA/PANI-Cu, and PVA/PANI-NiCu are synthesized via the in-situ polymerization of aniline, Cu, Ni, and NiCu (Ni 80 Cu 20 alloy) particles in the presence of PVA. Optical and chemical compositions and morphological characteristics of composite films are determined using UV–Vis, FTIR, SEM, and TGA analysis. The electrode degradation efficiency of MeOH following oxidation and the elimination of toxins from the solution by voltammetry and chronopotentiometry is also investigated. Abstract:Textile dye effluents and textile waste disposal represent two significant environmental challenges. Here, we present possible combined solution for both. Urea-derived graphitic carbon nitride g -C 3 N 4 is thermally exfoliated to nano n -C 3 N 4 . Both obtained materials are characterized in detail, and their photocatalytic efficacies in photodegradation of three textile azo dyes under simulated solar light irradiation are compared. n -C 3 N 4 exhibited superior performance over g -C 3 N 4 under given experimental conditions. Novelty of the work is the subsequent usage of the non-woven jute post-industrial waste as a photocatalyst support. It was shown that NW jute impregnated with n -C 3 N 4 can be successfully used in three consecutive photocatalytic cycles, keeping high photodegradation efficacy (~ 90% in the case of Acid Orange 7, and 55% in the case of Acid Blue 113). Additionally, possibility of usage of NW jute post-industrial waste as textile dye sorbent is presented in the case of Basic Yellow 28.

Abstract:Growing demand for sustainable wastewater treatment drives interest in advanced photocatalytic materials. Immobilized photocatalysts hold potential for addressing industrial wastewater organic pollutants, offering substantial surface area, agglomeration prevention, and easy removal. In this study, we successfully immobilized ZnO and carbon nanotubes onto a textile substrate through bilateral esterification and explored their effectiveness as a potent photocatalyst for degrading of commercial textile colorant reactive blue 4 (RB-4) colorant. Findings demonstrated significant improvements in photocatalytic performance upon integrating ZnO and CNTs into the fabric, coupled with chitosan immobilization. The immobilization process of ZnO and CNTs onto the substrate was elucidated through a proposed reaction mechanism, while the appearance of carbonyl peaks at 1719.2 cm-1 in the composite fabric further confirmed bilateral esterification. The as-developed immobilized nano-catalyst exhibited remarkable photocatalytic efficiency with an impressive 93.54% color degradation of RB-4. This innovative approach underscores the immense potential of the ternary immobilized (ZnO/fCNT/chitosan) composite fabric for efficient photocatalytic degradation in textile coloration processes. Exploring the early-stage development of immobilized photocatalysts contributes to safer and more eco-friendly practices, addressing pressing environmental challenges effectively.
TiO2-Based Heterostructure Containing g-C3N4 for an Effective Photocatalytic Treatment of a Textile Dye

Abstract:Water pollution has become a serious environmental issue. The textile industries using textile dyes are considered to be one of the most polluting of all industrial sectors. The application of solar-light semiconductor catalysts in wastewater treatment, among which TiO2 can be considered a prospective candidate, is limited by rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. To address these limitations, TiO2 was tailored with graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) to develop a heterostructure of g-C3N4@TiO2. Herein, a simple hydrothermal synthesis of TiO2@g-C3N4 is presented, using titanium isopropoxide (TTIP) and urea as precursors. The morphological and optical properties and the structure of g-C3N4, TiO2, and the prepared heterostructure TiO2@g-C3N4 (with different wt.% up to 32%), were analyzed by various laboratory methods. The photocatalytic activity was studied through the degradation of methylene blue (MB) aqueous solution under UV-A and simulated solar irradiation. The results showed that the amount of g-C3N4 and the irradiation source are the most important influences on the efficiency of MB removal by g-C3N4@TiO2. Photocatalytic degradation of MB was also examined in realistic conditions, such as natural sunlight and different aqueous environments. The synthesized g-C3N4@TiO2 nanocomposite showed superior photocatalytic properties in comparison with pure TiO2 and g-C3N4, and is thus a promising new photocatalyst for real-life implementation. The degradation mechanism was investigated using scavengers for electrons, photogenerated holes, and hydroxyl radicals to find the responsible species for MB degradation.

Abstract:Niobium-based metal oxides are emerging semiconductor materials with barely explored properties for photocatalytic wastewater remediation. Brazil possesses the greatest reserves of niobium worldwide, being a natural resource that is barely exploited. Environmental applications of solar active niobium photocatalysts can provide opportunities in the developing areas of Northeast Brazil, which receives over 22 MJ m2 of natural sunlight irradiation annually. The application of photocatalytic treatment could incentivize water reuse practices in small and mid-sized textile businesses in the region. This work reports the facile synthesis of Nb2O5 catalysts and explores their performance for the treatment of colored azo dye effluents. The high photoactivity of this alternative photocatalyst makes it possible to quickly obtain complete decolorization, in less than 40 min of treatment. The optimal operational conditions are defined as 1.0 g L−1 Nb2O5 loading in slurry, 0.2 M of H2O2, pH 5.0 to treat up to 15 mg L−1 of methyl orange solution. To evaluate reutilization without photocatalytic activity loss, the Nb2O5 was recovered after the experience and reused, showing the same decolorization rate after several cycles. Therefore, Nb2O5 appears to be a promising photocatalytic material with potential applicability in wastewater treatment due to its innocuous character and high stability.

Abstract:Oxygen vacancies (OVs) and heterostructures of photocatalysts play crucial roles in photocatalysis driven by visible light. In this study, a novel photocatalytic textile was prepared by spraying heterostructures of OVs-rich bismuth oxide (BiO 2-x ) and urea-derived graphitic carbon nitride (UCN) on amine group-modified poly(acrylonitrile) nonwoven textile (APAN), and then studied for sulfamethazine (SMT) removal and bacterial ( S. aureus ) disinfection under irradiation of energy-efficient white light emitting diodes (LEDs). The optimal BiO 2-x , prepared within a much shorter time (i.e. 1 h), was actually a ternary mixture of NaBiO 3 -Bi 2 O 3 -BiO 2-x with rich OVs rather than pure BiO 2-x . Incorporation of UCN could help redistribute electrons and induce formation of more OVs, thereby improve the photocatalytic activity of the BU-0.2 hybrid (i.e. mass ratio of BiO 2-x /UCN = 1:0.2). The BU-0.2 could use full-spectrum white light (i.e. 380–760 nm) to achieve superior SMT removal in a wide pH range (pH 5.0–9.0) and in the co-presence of common water constituents. The enhanced photocatalytic performance of BU-0.2 was attributed to the formation of OVs and heterostructure, which could broaden light absorption, help charges separation, and favor adsorption and activation of molecular O 2 . Detection of reactive species demonstrated that 1 O 2 and holes were the dominant factors responsible for SMT removal. Spraying deposition of BU-0.2 on APAN could endow the resultant textile (i.e. APAN-BU-0.2) with excellent photocatalytic activity for SMT removal and bacterial disinfection under LED white light irradiation. The as-prepared photocatalysts showed promising application prospects in purification of emerging pollutants utilizing LED white light.

Abstract:Photocatalysis has become an exciting and energy-saving technology for wastewater purification, but its practical applications have been limited by the difficulty involved in obtaining efficient and easily recyclable macroscale photocatalysts. Herein, we report the construction of C3N4/CdS nanojunctions on carbon fiber (CF) cloth as a filter-membrane-shaped photocatalyst. CF/C3N4/CdS cloth exhibits enhanced photoabsorption and photocurrent. Under visible light irradiation, CF/C3N4/CdS cloth shows improved photocatalytic activity for different pollutants (99% methylene blue (MB), 98% acid orange 7 (AO7), 81% tetracycline (TC), 81% Cr(VI)), compared with CF/C3N4 cloth (99% MB, 74% AO7, 48% TC, 20% Cr(VI)) and CF/CdS cloth (35% MB, 10% AO7, 47% TC, 48% Cr(VI)). Furthermore, with CF/C3N4/CdS cloth as a filter-membrane-shaped photocatalyst, the removal rate for TC and Cr(VI) was found to increase up to 73% and 83% after a 6 grade reaction, respectively, higher than that obtained for CF/C3N4 cloth (52% TC, 22% Cr(VI)) or CF/CdS cloth (50% TC, 42% Cr(VI)). The improved photocatalytic activity of CF/C3N4/CdS cloth results from the construction of C3N4/CdS nanojunctions, which not only confers stronger photoabsorption but also results in the efficient separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. In particular, several possible pathways for TC degradation were proposed based on the intermediate products formed. Therefore, CF/C3N4/CdS cloth can act as an efficient and recyclable filter-membrane-shaped photocatalyst for dealing with flowing wastewater, and it also provides new perspectives for the development of flexible macroscale photocatalysts.

Abstract:In recent years, heterogeneous photocatalysis has emerged as a promising alternative for the treatment of organic pollutants. This technique offers several advantages, such as low cost and ease of operation. However, finding a semiconductor material that is both operationally viable and highly active under solar irradiation remains a challenge, often requiring materials of nanometric size. Furthermore, in many processes, photocatalysts are suspended in the solution, requiring additional steps to remove them. This can render the technique economically unviable, especially for nanosized catalysts. This work demonstrated the feasibility of using a structured photocatalyst (ZnO, g-C 3 N 4 , and carbon xerogel) optimized for this photodegradation process. The synthesized materials were characterized by nitrogen adsorption and desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). Adhesion testing demonstrated the efficiency of the deposition technique, with film adhesion exceeding 90%. The photocatalytic evaluation was performed using a mixture of three textile dyes in a recycle photoreactor, varying pH (4.7 and 10), recycle flow rate (2, 4, and 6 L h −1 ), immobilized mass (1, 2, and 3 mg cm −2 ), monolith height (1.5, 3.0, and 4.5 cm), and type of radiation (solar and visible artificials; and natural solar). The structured photocatalyst degraded over 99% of the dye mixture under artificial radiation. The solar energy results are highly promising, achieving a degradation efficiency of approximately 74%. Furthermore, it was possible to regenerate the structured photocatalyst up to seven consecutive times using exclusively natural solar light and maintain a degradation rate of around 70%. These results reinforce the feasibility and potential application of this system in photocatalytic reactions, highlighting its effectiveness and sustainability.

Comparison of different trunk endurance testing methods in college-aged individuals.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE Determine the reliability of two different modified (MOD1 and MOD2) testing methods compared to a standard method (ST) for testing trunk flexion and extension endurance. PARTICIPANTS Twenty-eight healthy individuals (age 26.4 ± 3.2 years, height 1.75 ± m, weight 71.8 ± 10.3 kg, body mass index 23.6 ± 3.4 m/kg(2)). METHOD Trunk endurance time was measured in seconds for flexion and extension under the three different stabilization conditions. The MOD1 testing procedure utilized a female clinician (70.3 kg) and MOD2 utilized a male clinician (90.7 kg) to provide stabilization as opposed to the ST method of belt stabilization. RESULTS No significant differences occurred between flexion and extension times. Intraclass correlations (ICCs(3,1)) for the different testing conditions ranged from .79 to .95 (p <.000) and are found in Table 3. Concurrent validity using the ST flexion times as the gold standard coefficients were .95 for MOD1 and .90 for MOD2. For ST extension, coefficients were .91 and .80, for MOD1 and MOD2 respectively (p <.01). CONCLUSIONS These methods proved to be a reliable substitute for previously accepted ST testing methods in normal college-aged individuals. These modified testing procedures can be implemented in athletic training rooms and weight rooms lacking appropriate tables for the ST testing. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE 3.

Abstract:Water environmental pollutants have become one of the most serious environmental issues, and the removal of various environmental pollution (dyes, phenols, pesticides, heavy metal ions, etc.) is of particular concern because of their toxicity and refractory. Compared to conventional eliminating routes, photoelectrocatalysis (PEC), is considered as a promising strategy since it combines the advantages of photocatalysis (PC) and electrocatalysis (EC). However, it still encounters bottlenecks of scarce reaction sites and low product selectivity, restricting its development toward practical applications. In recent years, various of g–C3N4–based composites were used for the remediation of these typical environmental pollutants. Given this situation, this review summarizes the latest progress in the design and preparation of novel g–C3N4–based composites and their PEC degradation different pollution in the water environment. Some removal mechanisms are briefly discussed, and the prospects are presented for further research.

Abstract:The development of effective photocatalysts for the reduction of Cr(VI) and the degradation of antibiotics remains a challenge. The present work reports the development of a novel heterojunction composite material, BiOCl/BaTiO3@Co-BDC-MOF (BOC/BTO@Co-MOF), based on solvothermal techniques. To characterize the surface and bulk features of the material, techniques such as FE-SEM, HR-TEM, BET/BJH, XPS, FT-IR, p-XRD, and UV-Vis-DRS were used. Based on the results, the BiOCl/BaTiO3 nanocomposites are uniformly dispersed on the rod-shaped Co-BDC MOF, resulting in a layered texture on the surface. A further advantage of the composite structure is the strong interfacial enhancement facilitating the separation of photoexcited electron-hole pairs. Also, compared to its pristine counterparts, the heterostructure material exhibited excellent surface area and pore properties. The photocatalytic efficiency towards reduction and degradation of Cr(VI)/SMX pollutants were evaluated by optimizing various analytical parameters, such as pH, catalytic loading concentrations, analyte concentration, and scavenger role. The specially designed BOC/BTO@Co-MOF composite achieved a 96.5% Cr(VI) reduction and 98.2% SMX degradation under 60.0-90.0 min of visible light illumination at pH 3.0. This material is highly reusable and has a six-time recycling potential. The findings of this study contribute to a better understanding of the efficient decontamination of inorganic and organic pollutants in water purification systems.

Abstract:Using biomass tannic acid as the carbon source, N‐TiO2‐doped carbon nanotube membrane (N‐TiO2‐CNTM) are continuously prepared in situ. This membrane can simultaneously act as an adsorbent, photocatalyst, and electrocatalyst, effectively removing dye pollutants from industrial wastewater. Printing and dyeing wastewater, that is discharged after textile printing and dyeing processing, can cause irreversible damage to the aquatic ecosystem and harm the health of human beings. Till now, completely and readily removing dye molecules from industrial wastewater using a single catalyst rather than the combination of several materials remains a significant challenge. Herein, in situ preparation of carbon nanotube membranes (N‐CNTM and N‐TiO2‐CNTM) are reported that are doped using N with/without TiO2, respectively. These membranes can simultaneously function as an adsorber, a photo‐catalyst, and an electrocatalyst to efficiently remove dye pollutes from industrial waste water. Further researches reveal that the formation of p‐n type heterojunction inside of the N‐CNTM and N‐TiO2‐CNTM, can improve the hole separation and charge storage abilities, resulting in the efficient removal of dyes in the industrial waste water. This work provides a promising approach for the preparation of functionalized carbon nanotubes derived from waste biomass for the treatment of industrial water, reflecting the concept of treating waste with waste.

Abstract:Photocatalysis has been vastly applied for the removal of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and other micropollutants, with the aim of future water reclamation. As a process based upon photon irradiation, materials that may be activated through natural light sources are highly pursued, to facilitate their application and reduce costs. TiO2 is a reference material, and it has been greatly optimized. However, in its typical configuration, it is known to be mainly active under ultraviolet radiation. Thus, multiple alternative visible light driven (VLD) materials have been intensively studied recently. WO3 and g-C3N4 are currently attractive VLD catalysts, with WO3 possessing similarities with TiO2 as a metal oxide, allowing correlations between the knowledge regarding the reference catalyst, and g-C3N4 having an interesting and distinct non-metallic polymeric structure with the benefit of easy production. In this review, recent developments towards CECs degradation in TiO2 based photocatalysis are discussed, as reference catalyst, alongside the selected alternative materials, WO3 and g-C3N4. The aim here is to evaluate the different techniques more commonly explored to enhance catalyst photo-activity, specifically doping with multiple elements and the formation of composite materials. Moreover, the possible combination of photocatalysis and ozonation is also explored, as a promising route to potentialize their individual efficiencies and overcome typical drawbacks.
