Abstract:Metal-free g-C3N4 is a promising candidate for the next-generation visible light-responsive photocatalyst; however, high recombination probability of the photogenerated charge carriers on g-C3N4 limits its photocatalytic activity. To further increase the intrinsic photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4, here, perylene tetracarboxylic diimide-g-C3N4 (PDI/GCN) heterojunctions are prepared by one-step imidization reaction between perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) and g-C3N4 in aqueous solution. By the combination of various testing results, it is confirmed that the surface hybridization of PTCDA and g-C3N4 in the PDI/GCN heterojunctions via O=C-N-C=O covalent bonds occurs at lower PTCDA-to-g-C3N4 weight percentage. By selecting p-nitrophenol (PNP) and levofloxacin (LEV) as the target organic pollutants, the visible-light photocatalytic performance of the PDI/GCN heterojunctions is studied. It shows that the PDI/GCN heterojunction prepared at a PTCDA-to-g-C3N4 weight percentage of 1% exhibits remarkably higher visible-light photocatalytic degradation and mineralization ability toward aqueous target pollutants as compared with g-C3N4 and Degussa P25 TiO2. On the basis of the experimental results including photoelectrochemistry, indirect chemical probe, and electron spin resonance spectroscopy, it is verified that the surface hybridization in the heterojunctions is responsible for this enhanced photocatalytic activity via accelerating the migration and separation of the photogenerated charge carriers, causing to produce more active species like O-center dot(2)-, h(vB)(+), and (OH)-O-center dot for deep oxidation of PNP or LEV to CO2 and inorganic anions.
Construction of C3N4/CdS nanojunctions on carbon fiber cloth as a filter-membrane-shaped photocatalyst for degrading flowing wastewater

Abstract:Photocatalysis has become an exciting and energy-saving technology for wastewater purification, but its practical applications have been limited by the difficulty involved in obtaining efficient and easily recyclable macroscale photocatalysts. Herein, we report the construction of C3N4/CdS nanojunctions on carbon fiber (CF) cloth as a filter-membrane-shaped photocatalyst. CF/C3N4/CdS cloth exhibits enhanced photoabsorption and photocurrent. Under visible light irradiation, CF/C3N4/CdS cloth shows improved photocatalytic activity for different pollutants (99% methylene blue (MB), 98% acid orange 7 (AO7), 81% tetracycline (TC), 81% Cr(VI)), compared with CF/C3N4 cloth (99% MB, 74% AO7, 48% TC, 20% Cr(VI)) and CF/CdS cloth (35% MB, 10% AO7, 47% TC, 48% Cr(VI)). Furthermore, with CF/C3N4/CdS cloth as a filter-membrane-shaped photocatalyst, the removal rate for TC and Cr(VI) was found to increase up to 73% and 83% after a 6 grade reaction, respectively, higher than that obtained for CF/C3N4 cloth (52% TC, 22% Cr(VI)) or CF/CdS cloth (50% TC, 42% Cr(VI)). The improved photocatalytic activity of CF/C3N4/CdS cloth results from the construction of C3N4/CdS nanojunctions, which not only confers stronger photoabsorption but also results in the efficient separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. In particular, several possible pathways for TC degradation were proposed based on the intermediate products formed. Therefore, CF/C3N4/CdS cloth can act as an efficient and recyclable filter-membrane-shaped photocatalyst for dealing with flowing wastewater, and it also provides new perspectives for the development of flexible macroscale photocatalysts.

Abstract:The immobilization of catalysts hinders the application of nanosized photocatalysts in wastewater treatment. In this study, a simple method for the preparation of flexible composite non-woven catalysts with a good spectral response is presented. Firstly, the porous g-C3N4 nanosheets containing nitrogen defects (DCN) and sodium alginate (SA) were blended to prepare the casting solution and then coated on the surface of polyester and viscose blend non-woven fabric (NW). Finally, the robust three-dimensional composite non-woven catalyst (DCN@SA/NW) was constructed by cross-linking with CaCl2. The as-prepared samples were characterized by different physicochemical techniques including SEM, EDS, FTIR, Raman, XRD, XPS, and TGA. The photocatalytic degradation of dyes and antibiotics and self-cleaning and antibacterial properties of the catalyst were investigated. The optimal DCN@SA/NW formulation was 2.0 wt.% DCN and 2.0 wt.% SA. The DCN@SA/NW composite efficiently degraded rhodamine (RhB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). Moreover, the synthesized non-woven composite catalyst was easily recycled and remained stable, indicating its promising potential in wastewater treatment. The DCN@SA/NW also exhibited outstanding self-cleaning and antibacterial performance. This study provides an interesting idea for the research and development of immobilized photocatalysts and has great potential in future practical photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:The availability of robust, versatile, and efficient photocatalysts is the main bottleneck in practical applications of photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. Herein, N-WO3/Ce2S3 nanotube bundles (NBs) are synthesized and successfully immobilized on a carbon textile, resulting in a flexible and conducting photocatalyst. Due to the large interfacial area between N-WO3 and Ce2S3, the interwoven 3D carbon architecture and, more importantly, the establishment of a heterojunction between N-WO3 and Ce2S3, the resultant photocatalyst exhibits excellent light absorption capacity and superior ability to separate photoinduced electron-hole pairs for the photocatalytic degradation of organic compounds in air and water media. Theoretical calculations confirm that the strong electronic interaction between N-WO3 and Ce2S3 can be beneficial to the enhancement of the charge carrier transfer dynamics of the as-prepared photocatalyst. This work provides a new protocol for constructing efficient flexible photocatalysts for application in environmental remediation.

Abstract:This work is an attempt to realize electric field‐driven tourmaline/g‐C3N4 photocatalyst with enhanced photocatalytic performance and valorize low‐value wood residue to a recyclable tourmaline/g‐C3N4 photocatalytic lignocellulose membrane through recyclable deep eutectic solvent system. This innovative tourmaline/g‐C3N4 photocatalyst and recyclable lignocellulose photocatalytic membrane enhanced by introducing naturally polarized minerals have great application potential in efficient water treatment. Photocatalysis technology of g‐C3N4 is of great value in wastewater treatment, thus calling for developing a concise and high‐efficiency method to improve its photocatalytic efficiency. Here, a novel photocatalyst consisting of tourmaline particles (TPs) and graphitic carbon nitride (g‐C3N4) is prepared by a step calcining method with enhanced photocatalytic performance. The self‐polarized electric field of TPs attracts the photogenerated electrons generated by the catalyst and delays the recombination rate of electron‐hole pairs, for which reason the prepared photocatalyst exhibits a wider spectral response and stronger photocatalytic activity. The mechanism analysis exhibits that the reactive substances including h+, ·OH, 1O2, and ·O2− generated by TPs/g‐C3N4 effectively eliminate the contaminant during photocatalysis. The degradation efficiency of Rhodamine B (RhB) of g‐C3N4‐0.5% TPs is increased from 88.47% to 97.76% after 30 min illumination compared with pure g‐C3N4. Furthermore, to facilitate catalyst recycling and reuse, a photocatalytic lignocellulose membrane is prepared. After five cycles, the degradation efficiency of the membrane decreases from 97.89% to 95.54%, still maintaining 97.60%. This study has constructed an innovative tourmaline/g‐C3N4 photocatalyst and recyclable photocatalytic lignocellulose membrane with enhanced pollutant degradation properties by introducing naturally polarized minerals, providing a new approach for efficient water treatment.

Abstract:Natural biomass-based Juncus effusus (JE) fiber offers a wide range of applications in wastewater treatment. Recently, the hybridization of various semiconductors has emerged as an efficient approach to enhance adsorption and photodegradation properties. Herein, we in situ synthesized the ternary hybrid NiO/ZnO/TiO2 nanocomposites on the JE fiber using a sol-gel method with coprecipitation. The JE fiber with the ternary hybrid nanocomposites was applied for simultaneous adsorption and photodegradation of cationic and anionic dyes from wastewater. The results showed that the as-prepared NiO/ZnO/TiO2-JE (nano PS-JE) fiber exhibited excellent adsorption and photodegradation properties towards organic dyes. Approximately 98.0% of removal efficiency was achieved towards six kinds of organic dyes under the simulated UV irradiation. Therefore, the as-prepared nano PS-JE fiber may offer a new possibility for wastewater treatment as a promising candidate adsorbent for removing organic dyes.

Abstract:A novel low‐cost π–π biomass‐derived black carbon modified g‐C3N4 coupled FeIn2S4 composite (i.e., FeInS/BC‐CN) photocatalyst is reported, which reveals significantly improved photocatalytic performance for the degradation of Eosin Yellow (EY) dye in aqueous solution. This work provides an innovative idea for the development of advanced photocatalysts to mitigate water pollution. The environmental deterioration caused by dye wastewater discharge has received considerable attention in recent decades. One of the most promising approaches to addressing the aforementioned environmental issue is the development of photocatalysts with high solar energy consumption efficiency for the treatment of dye‐contaminated water. In this study, a novel low‐cost π–π biomass‐derived black carbon modified g‐C3N4 coupled FeIn2S4 composite (i.e., FeInS/BC‐CN) photocatalyst is successfully designed and fabricated that reveals significantly improved photocatalytic performance for the degradation of Eosin Yellow (EY) dye in aqueous solution. Under dark and subsequent visible light irradiation, the amount optimized composite reveals 99% removal performance for EY dye, almost three‐fold compared to that of the pristine FeInS and BC‐CN counterparts. Further, it is confirmed by means of the electron spin resonance spectrometry, quenching experiments, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, that the hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and superoxide radicals (•O2−) are the dominant oxidation species involved in the degradation process of EY dye. In addition, a systematic photocatalytic degradation route is proposed based on the resultant degradation intermediates detectedduring liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC‐MS/MS) analysis. This work provides an innovative idea for the development of advanced photocatalysts to mitigate water pollution.

High Flux Photocatalytic Self-Cleaning Nanosheet C3N4 Membrane Supported by Cellulose Nanofibers for Dye Wastewater Purification

Abstract:Hazardous dye substances discharged from the textile and dyestuff industries not only threaten local the surrounding ecosystems but are also hard to degraded. We report the preparation of process for a photocatalytic membrane device that can degrade dye pollution under visible light. This filtration membrane, with a well-organized multilayer structure, simultaneously achieves continuous and flow-through separation of degradation products. Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were used as a template for nanosheet C3N4 (NS C3N4) preparation; the performance for the photocatalytic degradation of dyes improved as the morphology changed from bulking to nanosheet. NS C3N4 was then attached to the surface of a prepared CNF membrane via vacuum filtration. This device exhibited high efficiency (the degradation rates of both Rhodamine B and Methylene blue both reached 96%), high flux (above 160 L·h−1·m−2·bar−1) and excellent stability (maintaining steady flux and high separation were maintained after 4 h). This easy-preparation, easy-scale-up, and low-cost process provides a new method of fabricating photocatalytic membrane devices for dye wastewater treatment.
Integrated flexible photocatalytic composite nanofiber membranes combined in-situ grown CQDs/g-C 3 N 4 with thermally etched porous silica

Abstract:In recent years, various semiconductor photocatalysts have been developed for wastewater treatment. However, traditional bulk photocatalysts suffer from powder agglomeration, difficult recovery, and secondary pollution, which hinders their large-scale application. Herein, the in-situ growth of carbon quantum dots/graphitic carbon nitride (CQDs/g-C 3 N 4 ) was successfully achieved on flexible silica nanofiber membranes (SiO 2 NFMs), which were synthesized by combining electrospinning with thermal polycondensation. It was found that the conversion of smooth membranes into porous surfaces due to the thermal etching effect of alkaline atmosphere during the creation of CQDs/g-C 3 N 4 , which not only facilitated the adsorption of tetracycline (TC), but also provided more active sites for photodegradation. Under visible light irradiation, the obtained CQDs/g-C 3 N 4 @SiO 2 NFMs showed exceptional photocatalytic activity toward TC, with first order kinetic constants of 3.88 and 48.86 times greater than g-C 3 N 4 @SiO 2 NFMs and SiO 2 NFMs, respectively. The radical trapping experiments revealed that •O 2 − , 1 O 2 , h + , and •OH were the active species in photocatalytic degradation. The photocatalytic degradation was evaluated under initial pH, inorganic anions, and natural aqueous substrate, which shows good applicability. In addition, CQDs/g-C 3 N 4 @SiO 2 NFMs exhibited high stability and reusability. And the integrated composite membranes can be directly recovered from water after the immobilization of photocatalysts. To sum up, with the advantages of high photocatalytic activity, flexibility, easy separation, and recovery, CQDs/g-C 3 N 4 @SiO 2 NFMs are prospective catalysts for practical applications in water remediation.

Abstract:Photocatalysis water treatment without artificial energy is cost‐effective, waste‐free and sustainable. Coventional powder photocatalysts have tiny contact surfaces, low catalytic efficiency, and are difficult to recycle and reuse, restricting their usage. Herein, a Lignin@t‐FeC2O4/g‐C3N4 material is developed by engineering hollow quadrangle t‐FeC2O4 and g‐C3N4 nanosheets on lignin membranes through facile impregnation coating and precipitation reaction. Fast mass transport, catalytic activity and accessibility characterize hollow tetragonal FeC2O4·2H2O. TEM, SEM and FTIR show that lignin binds t‐FeC2O4 and g‐C3N4. The g‐C3N4 nanosheets are uniformly wrapped on the surface of lignin fibers, and t‐FeC2O4 is loaded between them. This structure increases visible light absorption and active site‐contaminant contact. The chain reaction produces extremely active hydroxyl radicals from hydrogen peroxide because the Lignin@t‐FeC2O4/g‐C3N4 modules are rich inFeII, according to XPS. Transient photocurrent response curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy suggest a promoted charge migration and isolation at the redox reaction interface in the Lignin@t‐FeC2O4/g‐C3N4 system. As a result, Lignin@t‐FeC2O4/g‐C3N4 degrades 99% Rhodamine B within 40 minutes, and this performance is stable even under difficult conditions, such as low hydrogen peroxide concentration and high pH. This study combines lignin membranes with the photo‐Fenton reaction, and thus provides new concept for the development and application of membranes and photocatalysis.
Straightforward fabrication of lignin-derived carbon-bridged graphitic carbon nitride for improved visible photocatalysis of tetracycline hydrochloride assisted by peroxymonosulfate activation

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-assisted visible photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants via graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a promising and environmentally friendly technology. But pristine g-C3N4 still suffers from limited visible light utilization and low charge carrier mobility. Herein, g-C3N4 doped by C derived from lignin (LCN) was synthesized via a straightforward calcination process involving a physical blend of lignin and melamine, and its photocatalysis and PMS-assisted photocatalysis under visible light for typical organic pollutant tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) were studied. The experimental results show that due to the incorporation of C atoms by replacing bridging N atoms in g-C3N4, LCN has improved visible light utilization and enhanced charge transfer. Under the assistance of PMS, LCN-1 (1 wt% lignin in g-C3N4) exhibits a markedly high TC degradation efficiency, with a degradation rate 6.74 times that of pristine g-C3N4. In addition, the main radicals and reaction mechanisms in both systems were proposed through free radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance signal. This work offers insights into the development of low-cost C-doped g-C3N4, using sustainably sourced lignin, and further demonstrates its superior efficiency in photocatalytic degradation of TC coupled with PMS activation.

Abstract:Semiconductor heterojunction engineering and three-dimensional (3D) architecture construction have been considered highly desirable strategies to enhance photocatalytic performance. Herein, a BiOI/ZnO composite photocatalyst with a 3D flower-like architecture was successfully prepared, which was stably immobilized on three-dimensional porous lignocellulosic biomass Juncus effusus (JE) fiber. The outstanding photocatalytic performance of the BiOI/ZnO-JE fiber was confirmed by the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC, 90%), ciprofloxacin (CIP, 79%), and norfloxacin (NOR, 81%). The enhanced photocatalytic activities were mainly attributed to the synergistic absorption performance of the lignocellulosic JE and the effective transfer and separation of charges. Moreover, the hydroxyl (·OH) and superoxide radicals (·O2 −) are the main reactive species in the photocatalytic process according to the analysis. This work may provide a novel perspective for constructing high-performance lignocellulosic-based photocatalytic materials.

Abstract:The application of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) as a non-metallic photocatalyst for removing harmful pollutants in the wastewater environment has received considerable attention in recent years. Nevertheless, its low activity is primarily restricted by a high rate of charge carrier recombination. Herein, a green and straightforward method for synthesizing small-sized porous thin g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets directly from urea solution has been developed. This new photocatalyst can effectively remove 99.3% of rhodamine B within 15 min, exhibiting a degradation rate 16.8 times greater than that of conventionally synthesized bulk g-C 3 N 4 , under visible light irradiation. Additionally, this photocatalytic efficiency is comparable or even superior to that of previously reported literature, while requiring significantly less catalyst usage. From the experimental results, we have confirmed that the outstanding structural property as well as the stronger oxidizability of the valence-band holes (h + ) are responsible for its greater photocatalytic activity. Its increased specific surface area and abundant pore structure significantly improve contaminant adsorption and charge separation and transfer. Meanwhile, the positive shift of the valence band enhances the oxidation of photogenerated h + , resulting in higher photocatalytic activity. This work can provide newly insights for designing highly efficient and easily-constructed g-C 3 N 4 photocatalysts for practical photocatalytic water treatment applications.

Abstract:Photocatalysts in powder form commonly cannot have a high photocatalytic efficiency without strong agitation in traditional photocatalytic process.It is also inconvenient for recovery of the photocatalysts in powder form after usage. This consequently, results in a secondary pollution which limits their application in water treatment for heavily polluted natural waterways. In this work, coating GO and TiO2 nanomaterials over large-scale cellulose substrates which can easily float on water was performed in the presence of crosslinker by applying a simple dip-coating method. The photocatalytic activities were evaluated by studying the degradation of two models of organic pollutants, methylene blue and glyphosate under visible light irradiation. The nanomaterial wrapped substrates endured over 40 times reuse at an optimum photocatalyst concentration of 0.1 g/L GO and 15% TiO2 based on fabric weight. The highest degradation rate was obtained at this point and a further increase in concentration decreased the degradation rate. The efficient degradation of glyphosate by the nanomaterial loaded substrate confirms its industrial application in treating pesticide and herbicide polluted waters. Remarkably, this study has established a feasible practical way for direct degradation of pollutants in lakes or rivers using mechanically floating large-scale cellulose-supported photocatalysts.

New breakthrough in rapid degradation of lignin derivative compounds · A novel high stable and reusable green organic photocatalyst

Abstract:The pulp and paper sectors are thriving yet pose significant environmental threats to water bodies, mainly due to the substantial release of pollutants. Lignin-derived compounds are among the most problematic of these contaminants. To address this issue, we present our initial results on utilizing organic semiconductor photocatalysis under visible light for treating lignin-derived compounds. Our investigation has been centered around creating a green and cost-effective organic semiconductor photocatalyst. This catalyst is designed using a structure of bagasse cellulose spheres to support PM6 (poly[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)-4-fluorothiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene))-co-(1,3-di(5-thiophene-2-yl)-5,7-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-benzo[1,2-c:4,5-c']dithiophene-4,8-dione))]: MeIC (3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-cyclopentane-1,3-dione[c]-1-methyl-thiophe))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2',3'-d']-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']-dithiophene)). This photocatalyst demonstrates remarkable efficiency, achieving over 91 % degradation of lignin-derived compounds. The superior photocatalytic performance is attributed to three main factors: (1) The ability of PM6 to broaden MeIC's absorption range from 300 to 800 nm, allowing for effective utilization of visible light; (2) the synergistic interaction between PM6 and MeIC, which ensures compatible energy levels and a vast, evenly spread surface area, promoting charge mobility and extensive donor/acceptor interfaces. This synergy significantly enhances the generation and transport of carriers, resulting in a high production of free radicals that accelerate the decomposition of organic materials; (3) The deployment of PM6:MeIC on biomass-based carriers increases the interaction surface with the organic substances. Notably, PM6: MeIC showcases outstanding durability, with its degradation efficiency remaining between 84 % and 91 % across 100 cycles. This study presents a promising approach for designing advanced photocatalysts aimed at degrading common pollutants in papermaking wastewater.
A metal-free photocatalytic active hybrid fiber as a novel self-cleaning adsorbent for enhanced tetracycline removal

Abstract:Metal-free photocatalytic degradation of pollutant is an eco-friendly green method for wastewater remediation. Herein we reported using amine modified alginate as anchor line, graphene oxide (GO) and carbon nanotubes (CNT) as photoactive units to fabricate a recyclable metal-free photocatalytic active hybrid fiber via facile carbodiimine-mediated amide coupling and calcium ion crosslinking. The results show that the photoactive fiber with unique microporosity and enhanced thermal stability has been successfully prepared. The prepared fiber presented a significantly photo-enhanced removal effect on tetracycline (TC). The efficiency of TC removal promoted by the fiber under solar irradiation is 10 times higher than that under dark. In the photocatalytic treatment of TC, the fiber also showed higher TC removal efficiency than that of GO and CNT alone synergistic effect of GO/CNT. Electron spin resonance analysis confirmed that the fiber under solar irradiation induced to the generation of 1 O 2 and hole (h + ) which degraded TC. UV-vis spectra analysis indicated that GO and CNT components in the fiber promoted TC to undergo oxidative degradation. Major transformation products during TC removal were identified with Liquid chromatography mass spectrometry. Finally, such photoactivity of the fiber can be utilized to develop a convenient irradiation/agitation regeneration approach to make the fiber adsorbent reusable. The recycled fiber maintained an excellent level of TC removal performance after multiple recycling steps. Overall, this study provides a new strategy of preparing a recycled metal-free photocatalytic material for water treatment, and is of great reference value for research in this field.

Abstract:Using biomass tannic acid as the carbon source, N‐TiO2‐doped carbon nanotube membrane (N‐TiO2‐CNTM) are continuously prepared in situ. This membrane can simultaneously act as an adsorbent, photocatalyst, and electrocatalyst, effectively removing dye pollutants from industrial wastewater. Printing and dyeing wastewater, that is discharged after textile printing and dyeing processing, can cause irreversible damage to the aquatic ecosystem and harm the health of human beings. Till now, completely and readily removing dye molecules from industrial wastewater using a single catalyst rather than the combination of several materials remains a significant challenge. Herein, in situ preparation of carbon nanotube membranes (N‐CNTM and N‐TiO2‐CNTM) are reported that are doped using N with/without TiO2, respectively. These membranes can simultaneously function as an adsorber, a photo‐catalyst, and an electrocatalyst to efficiently remove dye pollutes from industrial waste water. Further researches reveal that the formation of p‐n type heterojunction inside of the N‐CNTM and N‐TiO2‐CNTM, can improve the hole separation and charge storage abilities, resulting in the efficient removal of dyes in the industrial waste water. This work provides a promising approach for the preparation of functionalized carbon nanotubes derived from waste biomass for the treatment of industrial water, reflecting the concept of treating waste with waste.

Hierarchically porous cellulose-based carbon aerogels with N-doped skeletons and encapsulated iron-based catalysts for efficient tetracycline catalytic degradation

Abstract:Three-dimensional interpenetrating and hierarchically porous carbon material is an efficient catalyst support in water remediation and it is still a daunting challenge to establish the relationship between hierarchically porous structure and catalytic degradation performance. Herein, a highly porous silica (SiO2)/cellulose-based carbon aerogel with iron-based catalyst (FexOy) was fabricated by in-situ synthesis, freeze-drying and pyrolysis, where the addition of SiO2 induced the hierarchically porous morphology and three-dimensional interpenetrating sheet-like network with nitrogen doping. The destruction of cellulose crystalline structure by SiO2 and the iron-catalyzed breakdown of glycosidic bonds synergistically facilitated the formation of electron-rich graphite-like carbon skeleton. The unique microstructure is confirmed to be favorable for the diffusion of reactants and electron transport during catalytic process, thus boosting the catalytic degradation performance of carbon aerogels. As a result, the catalytic degradation efficiency of tetracycline under light irradiation by adding only 5 mg of FexOy/SiO2 cellulose carbon aerogels was as high as 90 % within 60 min, demonstrating the synergistic effect of photocatalysis and Fenton reaction. This ingenious structure design provides new insight into the relationship between hierarchically porous structure of carbon aerogels and their catalytic degradation performance, and opens a new avenue to develop cellulose-based carbon aerogel catalysts with efficient catalytic performance.
